My life’s journey has taken me from a poverty-stricken area of west Alabama to an exciting life in New York. I moved to Tampa in 2013 and since then, have been welcomed and touched by some of the most gracious individuals to have ever entered my life. I love Tampa! The residents of Tampa Bay are passionate about this area being the number one place in the nation to raise children. Residents here know that there are some basic gifts that we can give our children to sustain them throughout life: the gift of empathy, effective communication skills and a love of reading. Children begin to develop empathy as early as six months of age. The way we look at each other, speak to our partners and treat those less fortunate all build on the development of empathy in children. Begin early talking to your children about emotional states of being— happiness, sadness, surprise, anger— and help your child to recognize these emotions in themselves and others. Find opportunities to talk to your child about the happy moments in life as well as the sad. We lived on a working farm during my child’s formative years so he was able to experience all of those emotions through the natural life-cycle of animals. It matters little if it is a butterfly or a calf; we can all find those opportunities.
at their own pace but being able to articulate their feelings in a meaningful way will reduce the frustration often associated with language development. I grew up in a very rural area of the Deep South and know firsthand that reading can create an escape that instills hope and builds dreams. Reading opens the world to all possibilities. My favorite book of all time is "The Grapes of Wrath” and the words in that novel helped shape my life today. You never know what will make the difference in the life of a child but these three tools will make it richer, deeper and easier to navigate. Did I say I love Tampa? KELLEY PARRIS Executive Director Children's Board of Hillsborough County chidrensboard.org
The gift of words, of developing communication skills and a strong vocabulary, will stay with children all the days of their lives. Being able to communicate one’s emotions, expectations, strengths and weaknesses are important to all of our relationships. Children develop communication skills

INTERNATIONAL P3 PROGRAM
helps parents with
relationship and financial skills
by Amanda Keating, PSYD, BCBA-D
C
hampions for Children has recently expanded its commitment to providing a range of education and support services to families who want to strengthen their skills as parents. Last year, the agency launched its Positive Parenting Partnership (P3) program, which serves families with children or teens of any age. P3 is a Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood federally grant-funded initiative designed to strengthen families by focusing on three areas of emphasis: parenting, relationships and finances. Using a public-health approach, the Positive Parenting Partnership program provides a range of evidence-based, scientifically evaluated services intended to enhance our entire community. The program is available to any parent or caregiver in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk or Manatee counties free of cost.
WHAT ARE THE PARENTING EDUCATION SERVICES? The P3 program uses the Positive Parenting Program (or “Triple P”)— the most widely evaluated parenting program in the world—to help parents and caregivers achieve their goals with their children. The internationally recognized program arms parents with skills to build strong family relationships, teach children new skills, manage misbehavior and prevent problems happening in the first place. The core international base of the Triple P research and practice is Queensland, Australia. Triple P is a system of interventions that can be highly individualized. Parents can opt for a brief consultation about just one area of concern such as toilet training, cooperation, developing a more positive relationship with your teen, or balancing work and home life. Parents may also take part in more comprehensive programs that hone multiple skills for multiple concerns. Specialized programs are available for parents of teens and children with developmental disabilities. Moreover, 8 TampaBayParenting.com | APR 2017
services may be delivered in groups or individually in a variety of locations. P3 currently has several Triple P initiatives under way at their offices in Temple Terrace as well as community locations such as the Children’s Board Family Resource Centers, local schools and the Glazer Children’s Museum.
WHAT ARE THE MARRIAGE AND RELATIONSHIPS SERVICES? You might be surprised to learn that Florida cities have some of the highest divorce rates in the country. In fact the greater Tampa Bay area is home to more than 280,000 divorcees. This new P3 program at Champions for Children helps local families improve relationship stability and satisfaction. P3 uses the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) to enrich partnerships with essential skills such as effective communication, working together as a team, solving problems, managing conflict and enhancing commitment and friendship. The Positive Parenting Partnership selected the PREP program, in part, because of lower divorce rates seen in couples that have participated in a PREP group and the reported higher satisfaction in their relationships. In addition to the programs offered for couples, P3 also offers PREP programs for those who are single but hoping to develop healthy partnerships in the future. One of our proudest accomplishments has been recruiting the skilled multidisciplinary team of professionals providing these interventions to the greater Tampa Bay area. They come from backgrounds in psychology, school psychology, marriage and family counseling,

mental health counseling, social work, applied behavior analysis and child development.
WHAT ARE THE FINANCIAL HEALTH SERVICES? P3 helps families to improve or plan for their financial health by connecting them to local services and supports such as tax preparation, financial wellness classes and career planning. Many offerings are provided through our agency’s partnership with United Way Suncoast. P3 also offers special financial services such as planning for your child’s college education and developing special needs trusts for parents who have a child with a developmental disability.

Protection and Prevention
Did you know mosquitoes can breed in as little as one teaspoon of water? That’s enough to fill a bottle cap! It seems we never quite catch a break from mosquitoes here in Florida and we’re already feeling the bites this spring, so we asked Hillsborough County Mosquito Control to share simple things
Protect Your Family • Cover exposed skin by wearing longsleeved shirts and long pants. • Use an insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin. • Make sure window and door screens are bug-tight. Check your screen periodically to make sure there are no holes, and replace worn screens. • Try to stay indoors during prime mosquito times of dawn and dusk.
you can do right now to protect your family and your home from the bloodsucking insects as we head into the summer months.
Protect Your Home Routinely walk around your home. It is very likely you have standing water somewhere near your house where mosquitoes can easily breed. • Drain water from garbage cans, house gutters, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots, buckets, watering cans, kiddie pools and any other container where rainwater has collected. • Discard old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances and other items that may collect water. • Clean out rain gutters and downspouts regularly. • Empty and clean birdbaths and pet water bowls at least once or twice a week. • Protect boats and vehicles from rain with tarps that do not accumulate water. • Keep swimming pools in good condition, and maintain chlorination. • Regularly rinse out any bromeliad plants in your yard with a garden hose; the average bromeliad can be expected to produce around a hundred mosquitoes per year.
If mosquitoes become a problem in your neighborhood, report it and submit a request for service. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY MOSQUITO CONTROL:

THE CHILDREN’S BOARD OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY Working for You! BY APRIL GUEST EDITOR KELLEY PARRIS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CHILDREN'S BOARD OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY
T
he Children’s Board of Hillsborough County has invested in children and families for 30 years. The mission of ensuring children are healthy, developmentally on track, ready to learn, and are in supported and supportive environments has been the cornerstone of its purpose in our community. This year, the Children’s Board will invest over $30 million in local non-profits that work diligently to meet the needs of the children and families in Hillsborough County. More than 190,000 children and families received services from Children’s Board-funded agencies last year. Forty thousand visitors held meetings and conferences at no cost to the community in the Children’s Board’s Ybor City Administrative Building, and six Children’s Board Family Resource Centers operated around the county to meet the needs of children and families in their neighborhoods and community. The Children’s Board recognizes the vast geography and diverse culture of Hillsborough County. In an effort to meet those needs, the Children’s Board held town hall meetings in six areas of the county in 2015. Demographic shifts in population(s) were analyzed and data evaluations conducted in an effort to support individualized programs that meet the needs of specific areas. As a result of these town hall meetings, Mobile Swim Lessons were developed to keep
12 TampaBayParenting.com | APR 2017
children safe from drowning, and community partnerships were formed to combat the drowning numbers head on. At the close of last year, drowning deaths had decreased by 50 percent. All six areas of the county indicated the need for highquality summer programming for children. The parents were surveyed to define quality. As a result, content experts developed program curriculum to include literacy, STEM, art, character education, safety and teamwork through sports. Each program had enough autonomy to appeal to the diverse cultural appetite of children across the county. The cross-cultural nature of these programs ran the gamut from lessons in Mandarin to dance instruction from the Tampa Ballet. This project was a joint effort of the Children’s Board and the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners and will return by popular demand. South County indicated the need for expanded capacity in high quality early learning opportunities for children. The Children’s Board contracted with Enterprising Latinas to expand capacity within the system. Today more than 20 individuals are pursuing their licensure to open high quality Early Learning Childcare homes in South County. Early Learning providers from across Hillsborough County were surveyed to identify barriers to
quality in the system. Discipline in the classroom and parental involvement came up as the top three barriers. The Children’s Board is bringing the concept of “Conscious Discipline” to the Early Learning Community through a partnership led by Hillsborough Community College with the CALM program, Conscious Awareness Learning Model.
As you can see, it takes everyone’s efforts to make Hillsborough County the very best place in America to raise children. It takes you and our partners in the community to make a true difference in the life of a child. The results of this dynamic, coordinated community response to supporting children and families produced the following outcome measures from 23,063 program participants evaluated over a 12-month cycle.
CHILDREN ARE HEALTHY: babies were born at HEALTHY BIRTH WEIGHTS
mothers initiated BREASTFEEDING
children attended WELL BABY/WELL CHILD visits
pregnant women attended PRENATAL CARE VISITS
CHILDREN ARE IN SUPPORTIVE AND SUPPORTED ENVIRONMENTS:
The three leading causes of child death in Hillsborough County are unsafe sleep, drowning and abusive head trauma. The Children’s Board, in partnership with the Department of Children and Families and Eckerd Community Alternatives, launched a public awareness campaign to end child death from the three leading causes in Hillsborough County. Check out preventneedlessdeaths.com. Help us as a community to keep all of our children safe.

* Simple ideas to Education | Financial Literacy
make the most of
Financial Literacy Month by Justin Pullaro
It is Financial Literacy Month, which is a great way to give us some much needed focus on a subject that often gets relegated to the end of the line in the “things-I-need-to-do-with-my-kids” pecking order. After all, school, sports and daily life are a non-stop affair. Who has time to tackle a subject like money? Money is central to everyday life. Unfortunately the neglect of financial awareness fostered by over-taxed schools and families has produced a generation of kids that doesn’t know how to “adult” with money. Good news, parents. You are still the ideal communicators of financial issues. You can turn the tide with these three simple ideas.
1
FOCUS ON KEYSTONE HABITS A
keystone habit is a behavior ripple effect that can spread and change other habits. It has transformative power. For young children, a keystone habit for them to learn is budgeting money into the categories of spend, share and save. The habit will form when this happens every time they receive money. Every time. Consistently. Learning this routine early is the beginning of grown-up budgeting, living beneath their means and making financial decisions. It is the gateway to bigger and more important financial conversations that happen later on in life.
2
IMMERSE YOUR FAMILY IN FINANCIAL CONVERSATIONS The most central and
important things you teach your children have no curriculum or workbook. Respecting others and acting with kindness are values you share all the time through quick and unplanned conversations. Your child's financial education should be the same. Be mindful of opportunities at a restaurant or the grocery store where you can ask a question or share a thought. You don't have to be an expert to do this. The parent-win is always in the conversation.
3
BE RESPONSIBLE TO YOUR CHILD'S FINANCIAL FUTURE You the parent are uniquely gifted
to model financial awareness. No financial guru can know and understand your child well enough to personalize their learning environment. Find resources like books or games that touch on the subject of money. Add them to what you are already doing with your child. You simply have to make it a priority and start small.

Education | Learning with Legos
Ways LEGOS Can Help Your Child LEARN by Mandy Gandhi
ADD VISUALS TO MATH LESSONS
Math is fun especially when you are playing with Legos. Use Lego bricks to teach math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. Legos offer a unique opportunity to actually see the concept behind the math. Try using two Lego bricks to create an addition equation. Challenge your little mathematician to count the pegs on each brick to answer the equation. Learning fractions is also a “snap” when using Legos. Line up Legos of various lengths to demonstrate the concept of whole, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4. Visualizing how each piece contributes to the whole brick will help more advanced concepts to “click.”
The possibilities are endless when it comes to using Lego® bricks for learning. These unassuming little blocks provide so many opportunities for little (and big) learners to practice matching, sorting, math, language and social skills. Here are three ways you can use Legos to introduce and reinforce a variety of educational skills. BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION
Children begin to organize and categorize information at a very early age. Challenge your little Lego lover to sort Lego bricks by color, size and shape. Consider using Duplo Legos for younger builders. They are easy for little hands to grasp. In addition to sorting and matching colors, use multi-colored bricks to reinforce numbers and counting. There are many resources online that provide free printable templates to use with your child. Printable templates can help build confidence with number order and matching. Give your child a pile of mixed Legos and encourage them to build a tower or train of one to 10 similarly colored Legos. Simple activities like these can help lay the foundation they will need in years to come. MANDY GANDHI Mandy Gandhi is the mom of two Lego-loving boys. She is always looking for ways to use Legos for learning. In addition to being a mom, she is a physical therapist and the mom-owner of BrickSmarts, LLC. BrickSmarts is a Tampa-based business that refurbishes used Lego sets and sells them online for a fraction of the cost! Learn more at BrickSmarts.com 22 TampaBayParenting.com | APR 2017
DESCRIBE FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS
Use Lego Minifigures to role-play and encourage your master builder to talk about emotions and build social skills. You can recreate an environment like a school or playground using Lego bricks and then model behaviors using the Minifigures. Use a variety of Lego heads to help your child identify their moods and emotions. Encourage building with loose Legos and have your child create a story that goes along with their masterpiece. Use open-ended questions like “What type of bricks did you use to build this?” or “What special features does it have?” Open-ended questions will give the builder an opportunity to use descriptive words and details. Choosing Summer Camp | Education
How to choose the right summer camp
*
FOR YOUR CHILD
by Carmyn Samuel and Stephen Shoe
Your kids can spend their summer on stage, singing like Broadway stars. They can canoe in the morning and code in the afternoon. They can try new sports, learn a language, make a movie or stop the summer academic slide. With so many choices, how do you start looking for summer camp? Here are some tips to help you find the best fit for your child.
THINK ABOUT THE KIND OF SUMMER YOU WANT FOR YOUR CHILD. Are you looking for outdoor activities and field trips or do you have academic goals in mind? Do you want a specialty camp where your child can immerse himself in his favorite topic or a general camp with a little bit of everything? Overnight or day? Do you want a camp that cultivates your child’s talent in sports or performing arts? Identify your priorities to narrow down a list of camps to consider. Some camps offer open houses or personal tours where you can meet directors, see the facility and ask questions. ASK ABOUT THE COUNSELORS.
They are the teachers and supervisors caring for the campers, so you’ll want to know your kids are in good hands. Ask what kind of experience or training they have to prepare. Many CAMP IDS counselors attended the camp themselves when they were younger, and newer staff are grouped with seasoned teachers. Certain camps, such as engineering, are designed and taught by professionals in those fields. Coaches, athletes and trainers offer sportspecific skill development in their areas of expertise.
for your child with a recreational program you know he or she will love. Balance a favorite camp from last year with one that challenges kids to go outside their comfort zone. Let them work up a sweat in the mornings on the golf course or tennis court and spend their afternoons cooling off as they build worlds in Minecraft or design keychains on a 3D printer. On the other hand, you might want a program that goes more in-depth. CAMP IDS has a popular full-day musical theatre camp that lasts for two weeks. Staging, choreography, costumes and sets all come together during that time, culminating in amazing performances. REMEMBER THE LITTLE CAMPERS.
Although many camps start with kindergarten and older students, camp can be a wonderful
experience for 3- and 4-yearolds. Camps spark curiosity and introduce academic concepts, providing plenty of time to play and explore. The PreK3 and PreK4 camps at CAMP IDS include sessions that emphasize reading and math basics. Children sing songs connecting letters and sounds, make crafts and do activities that help them practice counting and number recognition. Attending camp at this age can also help ease the transition in the fall for students entering school for the first time. WATCH YOUR HOURS.
If camp also serves as your child care during the summer, be sure to check the camp hours. Many camps mirror the school day, and you’ll need to sign up for extended care (if offered) or make other plans for after 3 p.m. Some camps offer morning care before the first camp starts. Ask about drop-off procedures so you know how early you can arrive, where kids go before camp begins and if there are additional charges. You might need to create a spreadsheet to figure out how to fit in all the fun, but there’s something for everyone at summer camp. A little planning now is sure to pay off in June and July when your child is busy and engaged making lots of summer memories.
SEEK VARIETY.
Many camps offer half-day sessions, which is great for mixing and matching. Pair the reading review camp you want
They can canoe in the morning and code in the afternoon. They can try new sports, learn a language, make a movie or stop the summer academic slide.

“Five-minute mom face” doesn't have to be a bad thing. I have a simple makeup routine that gives the impression of being refreshed and put together, and gives me more time to work on my real masterpieces, my kids.
RODAN & FIELDS MULTI-FUNCTION EYE CREAM
BAREMINERALS MATTE FOUNDATION WITH SPF
MAYBELLINE UNSTOPPABLE EYE LINER
BENEFIT POREFESSIONAL FACE PRIMER
NARS BLUSH
TOO FACED SIZE QUEEN MASCARA
I started using this eye cream four months ago, and I'm amazed! This and my morning cup of coffee are a dream team in making me look awake and refreshed.
I use this on my t-zone to smooth and blur out my pores. I have oily skin and this keeps it looking smooth and matte.
36 TampaBayParenting.com | APR 2017
I love the ingredients and light natural coverage it gives me. I don't even notice I have makeup on and I'm not afraid to sweat in it either. The SPF is a bonus skin protectant! Sometimes I need a bit of healthy color to my face. This blush adds a tiny bit of shimmer that gives me a natural glow, perfect for any day!
A drug store favorite, this eye liner is the Holy Grail to my makeup routine, or lack thereof. It enhances and widens my eyes to give the impression that I had a wink of sleep the night before.
Mascara adds length and fullness to my lashes for when I want people to ask where I'm going. This mascara stays on well, but is easy to take off at the end of the day.
MULTIPLE TUBES OF LIP SERVICE
My girls are constantly stealing my lip gloss, so I stick to the inexpensive drug store finds. NYX has amazing lip products that give my lips the perfect color and shine! I also love the SheaMoisture lip balms for all-day everyday moisture.

When you’re a busy mom with one kid pulling on your hair while another’s about to tumble out of the shopping cart, it can be difficult to look stylish. You need to be dressed for comfort and function and if it happens to come together in a stylish way, well, that’s a bonus! For those of us who want to look fashionable while still being able to fulfill our duties as Super Mom, here are some tips on how to step up your mom style. These days the go-to mom uniform is workout clothes, but why not substitute those yoga pants for a comfy boyfriend jean, then pair them with a graphic tee and a lightweight cardigan? Load up on the dresses: maxis and shifts are great because they tend to be less constricting around the waistline. We’re all familiar with the flip-flops here in Florida, but how about replacing them with a stylish metallic sandal that goes with everything? The perfect pair of sunnies is essential for a cool daytime look! The key is to find a style that fits the shape of your face. A statement necklace or ring can really make an outfit pop, but be sure the pieces are substantial. You wouldn’t want the baby pulling on your delicate chain necklace or dangly earrings. Don’t forget about your face! I always wear a little color on my lips and mascara on my lashes before I leave the house. Those two components alone can elevate your look.

So You Want to Race?

Tips to get on the right path—and stay there! by Nicole Geller
W
It’s the chance to create a stronger mind and soul and body. Sometimes the takeaway is more spiritual than physical: I’ve seen some of the best that Mother Nature has to offer on a morning run, bike or swim. This is what motivates me; this is what clears my mind.
e are well into 2017, so this may be a good time to ask yourself: When was the last time you selfishly cleared your mind? Because you—yes YOU—have earned the right to clear your mind by exercising your body!
• You are in charge of your own hands and feet. If your hands turn off your alarm clock, and your feet do not touch the ground, chances are, you are not going to exercise (this is also true for the evening exercise athletes). Trust me, we all lose motivation. However, some of my best trainings and races have been the ones that I did not want to do. I just picture how great I feel after. Nothing compares to crossing over that finish line no matter what the race or distance is.
Exercise and endurance training is truly a matter of mind over matter. If you want to make a change, your mind will set the priorities to find the time to do so. I did my first sprint triathlon in 2006. I had participated in 5K and 15K races before trying my first spring triathlon in 2006. I loved every second of it, so much so that I signed up for my second one two weeks later. Since then, I have participated in over 100 races including marathons, half-marathons, sprint/Olympic/70.3 and 140.6 triathlon distances. I’ve become a member of The Kennedy Law Triathlon Racing Team. Being involved in racing is wonderful in Florida because of the amazing climate that allows us to race every weekend. Staying involved, however, can be a challenge as injuries and schedules can consume any athlete. Here are some tips that worked for me, and I hope to motivate you enough to pay it forward to someone who deserves the chance to clear their mind. • Figure out how you can get to sleep earlier to get up earlier to exercise. I make my training time (4:30 a.m.) my personal time as my entire family is sleeping. Find your personal time! You can even go to sleep in your work out gear. • Find a training partner or a team to hold you accountable. The friendships that develop from exercise are incredibly powerful. Passions become talking points, your minds are cleared together and nothing beats the shared endorphins that come from a great round of exercise. • Start small but mighty, and work up to a bucket list item. We are all at different levels of athleticism. Do not discount the foundation you might have built from your younger years. Leverage what you enjoy. Exercise is not about the scale.
• I ask my children before each race what I should focus on. My youngest always tells me to race with a clear mind. The older one says to think about getting home faster to make him breakfast. In my running races, I have a special focus: I love to name my miles after people who have made a true difference in my life. For that mile, I only hear their voice, and think about their motivational words to me. However, I have found that it is hard to breathe and cry at the same so I caution you on the emotional aspect of naming your miles. • Identify your goals. If you are ready to participate in your first 5K, your first marathon or even your first Ironman, please ask yourself what your end result goal is. Do you want to have fun and feel accomplished? Do you want to complete the race with your child or pet coming across the finish line with you? Do you want to get on the podium? All are realistic ways to finish a race. • You should never change anything on race day including your nutrition, time expectations or finisher goals. You will always have another race. You should always have a chance to clear your mind. • Try and stay local for your first race. More than likely, you will not get a lot of sleep the night before your race (studies show the two nights before the race is most important). Creature comforts are a huge boost to your already altered state of mind so try and sleep in your own bed. So don’t wait; get out there! You owe it to yourself! I cannot imagine a better way than running to clear my mind.

Ask the Doctor | Health + Wellness
Q&A

with Dr. Jill Hechtman, M.D. FACOG, Medical Director Tampa Obstetrics however, about 40 percent of women who deliver early are first time moms! Fortunately, a new blood test has recently become available for all singleton (carrying one baby) pregnant women that can help identify the individual risk of delivering early. The PreTRM test is a prenatal blood test, ordered by your doctor, taken during the 19th or 20th weeks of pregnancy that predicts an asymptomatic woman’s risk of delivering early. The PreTRM test measures and analyzes specific proteins in the blood that have been shown to be highly predictive of premature birth.
Q: I want to understand the risks of premature birth. What causes it and how can I prepare? The joys of pregnancy are often coupled with feelings of anxiety or stress about factors that may impact a growing baby, like nutrition/diet, physical activity or the fear of miscarriage. However, one critical piece of information that is frequently overlooked is the possibility of delivering the baby early, or premature.
and delivery costs, extended hospital and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stays, and the medical care associated with a child who is born prematurely.
Common risk factors for premature birth include: shortened cervical length or a history of surgery on the cervix, infection or problems with the uterus or placenta, carrying more than one child (for example, twins or tripAlthough your doctor will explain the lets), advanced maternal age (over risk factors and symptoms associated 35 years old), conceiving through with delivering early, approximately 50 in-vitro fertilization (IVF), poor percent of women who go on to have diet, smoking, drug or alcohol use, being underweight or short intera premature birth will not have any vals between pregnancies.
known risk factors.
Premature birth, defined as delivering between 20 and 37 weeks, is a global problem that affects millions of families worldwide. One in 10 babies is born prematurely in the United States every year. Delivering early can have significant physical and developmental impacts to a baby, as well as emotional consequences for the parents. From a financial perspective, the first-year costs related to a premature birth are approximately 10 times higher than the costs related to a baby born at term due to labor
There is a significant benefit to knowing your premature birth risk early. If you’re at increased risk, there are interventions that you and your doctor can consider to help prolong your pregnancy. This information also gives you the opportunity to plan and prepare for a potential early delivery. On the other hand, a woman with known risk factors who receives a PreTRM test result that shows a low risk for premature birth will have peace of mind and reassurance about her current pregnancy. When a baby is in gestation, every day is a positive step toward development and physical growth. As I always tell my patients, every 24 hours is a miracle, so if we identify a woman at risk for premature birth and we can do something to prolong the pregnancy – even one day – that can make a huge impact. Premature birth can happen to anyone. But it is possible to understand your risk early, so you and your doctor can take the appropriate steps to take action and help give your baby the best start in life.
Although your doctor will explain the risk factors and symptoms associated with delivering early, approximately 50 percent of women who go on to have a premature birth will not have any known risk factors. The best predictor of delivering early is having a previous premature birth;

* Taking Action Health + Wellness | Child Abuse Prevention
FOR CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH by Anu Varma Panchal
A
pril may signal spring, Easter bunnies and the beginning of Florida’s hot season, but there’s something far more serious we should all think about this month: Child Abuse Prevention. April is National Child Abuse Prevention month, and for local leaders who have devoted their career to taking care of our most vulnerable, this is an issue that cannot be highlighted enough.
The issue of keeping children safe is everybody’s— parents, grandparents, teachers, preachers, neighbors, business people. A healthy community is healthy children. The community needs to operate as a unit and be involved.”
“Everyone has an obligation to make sure children are safe,” says Kelley Parris, executive director of the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. “The issue of keeping children safe is everybody’s—parents, grandparents, teachers, preachers, neighbors, business people. A healthy community is healthy children. The community needs to operate as a unit and be involved.” According to the 2015 study from the Administration for Children and Families Children’s Bureau, Child Protection Service agencies across America received about 4 million referrals involving about 7.2 million children during Fiscal Year 2015. These are just the ones we know about; a majority of cases are not even known by the system, says Parris. Children suffer not just from direct abuse and neglect, but also by being a witness or being exposed to abuse in the home of another family member—a broad category often referred to as household dysfunction that can include factors such as an incarcerated relative or living in a home where someone suffers from mental illness or a mother is treated violently. Such exposure can cause psychological damage to a child’s health and social and emotional well-being. This in turn affects their ability to learn and carry on a productive life. Parris explains that the Children’s Board’s goal is to strategically stay the ANU VARMA PANCHAL When Anu isn’t writing, editing or volunteering on the board of her kids' PTA, she’s usually in her minivan driving her two daughters (11 and 8) around Tampa to school and their activities. Although her idea of the ultimate good time is usually found between the pages of a book, Anu also enjoys yoga, her book club, travel, theater and area food and music festivals.

SOBERING STATISTICS • Who’s reporting child abuse? Three fifths of reports come from professionals, or those who learned about these children through their work. This group mostly consists of teachers, police officers and social services staff. A remaining 1/5 reports came in from friends, neighbors and relatives and another 1/5 is from unclassified or anonymous sources. • The youngest are the most at risk. Children in their first year of life suffered the highest rate of victimization compared to their counterparts in the community at about 24 per 1,000. • About ¾ of the children suffered from neglect while about 17 percent were abused. • More than 1,600 children died as a result of abuse and neglect; nearly ¾ of this number was under 3 years old. • Four fifths of child fatalities involved at least one parent. • More than 17 percent of perpetrators maltreated three or more victims.
course for child safety, to which end it supports local nonprofits that help make sure children are safe, healthy and developmentally on track. Just in the 2016 fiscal year, the organization invested $29.9 million in more than 90 local nonprofits. That multipronged approach is one that every community member can take to improve children’s welfare in general, Parris says. For example, the business owner who displays a crib can ensure that she doesn’t fill it with stuffed animals because those are unsafe for babies to sleep with. It’s a tiny action with big repercussions. A priest can step out of his comfort zone in a conference with a family or even address the topic of child abuse in a sermon. “Have a community discussion about it: What have you done today to keep a child safe?” says Parris. Ordinary people can address the issue in church, on blogs and in social groups. Everyone has skin in the game, she says, because healthy children in healthy families lead to healthy communities. “Ordinary people can do really great things every day,” says Parris. Most importantly, pay attention. If you encounter a potentially disturbing family situation and if something feels odd, it probably is odd, says Parris. “Children tell the truth,” she says. “Always follow your gut instinct.” Anyone who becomes aware of a situation in which a child is in harm can anonymously report it to the Florida Child Abuse hotline at 800-962-2873. “We have to move beyond awareness to action,” says Parris. “Children are our most precious resource of all.” If you know of a situation but are hesitant to take action, Parris says to ask yourself: Could you sleep at night if something happened to that child? “If you don’t even confront it, that child will remain in the shadows forever.”
FROM THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES: The Florida Abuse Hotline accepts reports 24 hours a day and 7 days a week of known or suspected child abuse, neglect, or abandonment and reports of known or suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of a vulnerable adult. There are four ways to make a report: • Online https://reportabuse.dcf.state.fl.us/ • By calling 800-962-2873 • Florida Relay 711 or TTY 800-453-5145 • By faxing your report to 800-914-0004 If the child you are worried about is in immediate danger, call 911.

5 Tips on Weight Loss with Nu Image Medical in Tampa
"I ALWAYS get superior customer service from you guys." -Nu Image Medical Client
Weight loss success is dependent on many factors such as diet and exercise regimens and predisposed genetic tendencies. More specifically, the ability to lose weight safely and effectively must include healing the GI tract by reducing highly inflammatory foods such as gluten, dairy and sugar. Also, an alkaline diet high in green foods and complex carbohydrates such as vegetables will allow for a healthier environment and more stable glucose levels. A healthy weight loss program should also include supporting the belly with probiotics, digestive enzymes and doing intestinal lining repair with bone broth or glutamine. It is imperative to detoxify the body of pathogens like candida, bacteria, viruses and parasites and to remove chemicals and heavy metals to prevent rebound weight gain. Toxicity that is stored in fat cells is not automatically removed when there is weight loss. Drinking enough fluids and clearing the elimination pathways in the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system and colon by doing periodic flushes can significantly improve the ability of an individual to lose weight and keep it off.
Most of all, be patient with yourself and set realistic successful goals!
1
Eat a well-balanced diet that is approximately 80 percent alkaline and 20 percent acidic. The most alkaline foods are vegetables, especially greens like kale, spirulina and chlorella. The most acidic foods are carbonated sodas and white sugar.
2
Drink half of your body weight in water daily in ounces.
3
Practice carbohydrate cycling to lower glucose levels and improve insulin resistance. By alternating low calorie complex carbohydrate days with higher calorie complex carbohydrate days, glucose and insulin levels will favor weight loss versus weight retention.
4
Do intermittent detoxification programs for the major organs of elimination such as the kidneys, liver, colon and lymphatic system under the advisement of a knowledgeable physician.
5
Consider fasting one day per week to allow cellular repair and rest.

DAY TRIP 2: DINOSAUR WORLD
BEST SPRING DAY TRIPS by Anna Tataris de Jesus
Spring time is here and this mommy is jumping for joy! The weather is perfect (not too hot like summer) and there are lots of places within driving distance to take the kids on a day trip, most of which are doable in a few hours. Here are a few ideas to get you started. If you don't have enough time to do them all, I suggest writing each idea on a piece of paper, putting them in a jar and letting the kids pick the idea for the day. It’s a fun way to get them excited about the day trip and you can save the unused ideas for the future! DAY TRIP 1: WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS STATE PARK
If you have a little one who absolutely loves mermaids like we do, this is a great stop. It’s been around for decades and still draws crowds young and old. During two different shows in a submerged 400-seat auditorium, you can watch “mermaids” displaying their beautiful moves in the crystal clear spring. One disclaimer: Just like in the movie “The Little Mermaid,” some of the shows do feature an evil sea witch who can be a little scary for younger ones. (Check the website to see the different shows and times.) The shows are definitely what most people drive to see, but make sure you pack bathing suits to enjoy Buccaneer Bay, the kiddie pool, the lazy river and some pretty big slides that drop you into the crystal clear waters of Weeki Wachee Springs. If you want more of an adventure, rent a kayak or canoe and take 3-hour trip in the clear Weeki Wachee River where you can enjoy wildlife up close. If you live in Tampa, this trip is a little more than an hour away.
Get ready to hear your kids ROAR because this place is filled with life-sized dinosaurs that kids can encounter simply by roaming through the park. Dino-themed playgrounds, interactive exhibits such as the Dino Gem Excavation and a fossil dig where kids can dig for items like shark teeth or Mosasaur teeth will keep the young ones busy. You can bring your own cooler and picnic with your kids, and friendly dogs on leashes are also welcome. The attraction even has a Prehistoric Museum that includes Animatronics, motion activated displays that make dinosaurs come to life. And if you are looking for any dinosaur toys for your kids, the 7,000-square-foot gift shop has it all. This attraction in Plant City is only about 20 minutes from downtown Tampa.
DAY TRIP 3: WILDERNESS SAFARI Give the kids a unique experience when you take them on a vehicle safari to see more than 450 animals from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas. If the vehicle isn’t adventurous enough, opt to animal gaze on camel or horseback or even by kayaking through freshwater areas while viewing the animals on land. Kids will love hand-feeding lemurs on Lemur Island or taking llamas on a trek. While the experience may not cost as much as a trip to Africa, be aware that the entry fees will set you back about $90 dollars per person for the Vehicle Safari. Wilderness Safari is located in Lakeland and a little less than an hour drive from Tampa.
DAY TRIP 4: BOK TOWER GARDENS
If you need a beautiful place to just relax with the kids, then Bok Tower Gardens, founded in 1929, is the venue. It's known for 50 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens designed by the creator of Central Park in Manhattan. The Gardens’ 205foot art deco, neo-Gothic Singing Tower Carillon still performs concerts daily. The Hammock Hollow Children's Garden is a place for kids to learn through power of the natural world and experience art in a tactile, meaningful way. Bok Tower Gardens is an ideal perfect spot; just bring blankets and baskets. It's a place I still remember going to as a kid, so make memories with your kiddos by taking them to this gem. A typical visit here takes about four hours. It's located in Lake Wales which is a little more than an hour drive from downtown Tampa.
ANNA TATARIS DE JESUS Anna is an Emmy-nominated television journalist with a passion for traveling with her family. After spending 15 years on camera, Anna decided to give up hard news for travel reporting. In 2012, De Jesus and husband Roy, also an Emmy-nominated television journalist, created “The Great Escape Plan” to travel Europe with their daughter Sophia and son Nikolas. Together they create videos for social media and their website The Great Escape Plan.com in the hope of inspiring other families to travel “family style.”
