Tips for Taking Your Kids to an Orlando Magic Game
by Karimah Henry, @CraftingaFunLife
Basketball season is in full swing and we are rooting for our home team, the Orlando Magic. The idea of taking kids to an NBA game may sound overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. You definitely have to plan ahead to make everyone’s experience fun.
Arrive Early
Since the arena is located in downtown Orlando, there will be lots of traffic in the area. Arrive early so that you will have enough time to park and walk to the arena. There are fun activities happening right outside of the arena before doors open. This will give kids the chance to play before watching the game. Once the doors open, you can grab snacks and drinks, use the bathroom and watch warmups before the game starts.
Where to Park
• GEICO Garage (pre-paid parking available through ticketmaster.com)
• The Plaza Garage (our favorite place to park because it’s usually cheaper and less traffic when leaving the game)
• 520 W Pine St. Garage
What to Bring
• Small clutch (4.5" x 6.5" x 1" or less) | Medical and diaper bags (max. 14"x14"x6") are subject to X-ray at designated locations
• Hand sanitizer or wipes
• Ear protection (kids may not be able to handle loud noise at games)
• Extra diapers & change of clothes for babies and toddlers
Download the Magic App
I love that you can access your tickets in the app. No need to worry about searching your email for your tickets. You can also order food and drinks through the app. This makes it easier to avoid the long lines for food. You have the option to pick it up or have it delivered to your seat. How awesome is that for families?!
Sensory Sensitivity Resources
There are sensory bags, weighted lap pads and photo-sensitivity glasses available to check out at guest services for free. The bags also include a special badge for guest recognition, fidget tools, noise-canceling headphones and other resources.
Breastfeeding Parents
The Kia Center has a Mamava lactation pod located on the east Terrace Level near section 116. It provides a private and relaxing environment for breastfeeding parents to nurse or pump. You must download the Mamava app to access the pod for free.
What to Wear
It’s a sporting event, so I will always suggest wearing comfortable clothes and shoes especially if you are taking small children. Make sure to wear an Orlando Magic shirt, jersey or colors. They have a store on site if you need to pick up any last minute gear. There’s always an item of the game that is on sale for a good price. If you or your child tend to get cold easily, I suggest bringing a light jacket.
Important Information: Children less than 36” tall do not need a ticket, provided the child sits on an adult’s lap.
ROAD TRIP TO A BUCS GAME
• Buy tickets ahead of time and download the app. Keep in mind the stadium is cashless.
• Only bring a small clutch (4.5" x 6.5" x 1" or less) | Lockers are available outside of the stadium.
• Arrive early to enjoy the Bucs Beach, Bucsparilla Invasion and Jr. Bucs Kids Zone.
• Wear comfortable clothes and shoes as well as sunscreen, sunglasses or hat.
• Parking is available at the stadium, but my family prefers paying to park at the houses nearby to avoid being stuck in the lot once the game is over.
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid being dehydrated.
• Take pictures near the pirate ship.
• Bring ear protection for kids. The game can get very loud especially when they fire the cannons.

Newborn Sumatran Tiger Brings Hope to Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is celebrating the arrival of Bakso, a baby Sumatran tiger born under the care of dedicated veterinarians and animal experts. This is the first Sumatran tiger birth at the park in seven years, marking an important milestone for the critically endangered species, with fewer than 600 left worldwide. Bakso’s playful personality is already captivating his caregivers as he bonds with his mother, Sohni. Guests can look forward to seeing the cub explore the Maharajah Jungle Trek with his mom in early 2025.
The birth of Bakso highlights Disney’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation. Through partnerships with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Species Survival Plan (SSP), Disney helps protect endangered animals like the Sumatran tiger. In addition, the Disney Conservation Fund supports global initiatives to safeguard tigers in the wild, helping both zoo-born and wild tigers thrive.

It’s the most wonderful time of year at the most magical place on Earth! Walt Disney World is decking the halls and making spirits bright by bringing back favorite events and decor, but there are also new jolly experiences, including a new way to meet Santa and a new gingerbread house.
So let’s dive in on our five favorite ways to celebrate the season at WDW. Oh, what fun!
Go See the Gorgeous Gingerbread Houses

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa:
The beloved gingerbread house is celebrating 25 years at the Grand Floridian and took a whopping 500 hours to bake and another 480 hours to piece together. There are 25 hidden Mickeys to find in honor of this 25 year holiday tradition.
Disney’s Contemporary Resort:
Standing at 17 feet tall and 25 feet wide, the Gingerbread Castle Display is inspired by Cinderella's Castle and features 13 hidden Mickeys and one 5-legged goat!

Disney’s Beach Club Resort:
This year’s gingerbread Holiday Carousel features characters from “Mickey’s Christmas Carol.” Be on the lookout for 24 gold hidden Mickeys!
Disney’s BoardWalk Inn:
This gingerbread display was inspired by the BoardWalk Deli.
Only in Florida!!! Spend the Day at Blizzard Beach Water Park
There is something for everyone at this winter-themed water park. Thrill seekers will love Summit Plummet, one of the world's tallest and fastest freefall water slides. Not ready to take the big plunge? That’s okay! There are 12 different attractions, including a 3,000-foot-long lazy river and a splash area for little ones called Tike’s Peak, inspired by the movie “Frozen."
Extra Magic:
Since you’re close by…play a round of mini golf at Winter Summerland Miniature Golf Course! Right next to Blizzard Beach is one of our favorite Disney gems! We love that you can choose which holiday-themed 18-hole course to play, summer or winter. 1 2

Festivities at the Parks
All of the parks and resorts at Walt Disney World are decorated for the holidays, but there are some special events on schedule as well.
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom:
Special Event ticket required
This party is a MUST-DO for holiday-loving Disney fans of all ages. NEW this year is the adorable Santa’s Christmas Carnival in Storybook Circus, where you can meet Santa, color ornaments to add to his tree, and even write a letter to Santa. We love how beautifully the area is decorated with twinkling lights and even a Florida “snowfall.” There are so many event-exclusive characters to meet, festive live shows at Cinderella’s Castle, and the beloved parade and fireworks show!
EPCOT’s International Festival of the Holidays:
Included with daily admission
We love this event because it’s a chance to sip, taste, and learn about holiday traditions around the world with the kids. There are 15 Holiday Kitchens to experience, and kids always love Olaf’s Holiday Tradition Expedition Scavenger Hunt and Holiday Cookie Stroll
Our favorite live shows at the festival are the Holiday Storytellers in the World Showcase and the Candlelight Processional with celebrity narrators on schedule throughout the season.

Our friends at Orlando Date Night Guide are sharing more:

ICE! Featuring Elf TM Presented by PEPSI ® at Gaylord Palms
by Laura Byrne
Only in Florida can you be sliding down a waterslide in one moment and donning a heavy-duty parka in the next as you walk through a 9-degree display of ice! It’s pretty incredible when you sit back and think about it, which got us wondering … how do they do it?
We’re “breaking the ice” to learn how the Gaylord Palms creates its stunning annual ICE! event and how they bring to life the whimsical world of Buddy the ElfTM through magical, larger-than-life ice displays that were handcarved on-site.
ICE! by the numbers:
To create about 12 immersive scenes that make up the 20,000-square-foot frozen attraction, it took 40 world-renowned artisans 12,000+ hours to hand-carve 6,700 blocks of ice that weigh in at about 2 million pounds total!
All About the Artisans:
A team of 40 ice artisans from Harbin, China, spent a whopping six weeks hand carving the 6,700 blocks of ice this year, using a 300-page guide of notes, handmade tools and a chainsaw when needed.
Harbin, China, is known as the “Ice City” and hosts the world's largest annual ice and snow sculpting festival, so it’s safe to say the local artisans know what they’re doing. They are pretty used to the cold too, as the city stays below freezing for nearly half the year.
You might even spot them carving in the Carver’s Showcase during your visit like we did!
The Big Chill
While many places here in Florida claim to be a winter wonderland this time of year, ICE! is probably the closest you’ll get to an actual winter wonderland. A state-of-the-art chilling system keeps the 20,000 square-foot space at only 9 degrees! Incredible, right?
Colorful Creations
A food chemist came up with a special food-safe dye to ensure the ice maintains its color throughout the season. LED lights are also used.
More Fun Things to Do at ICE!:
Some extra activities in the Alpine Village require separately purchased tickets. You can buy ticket bundles and save up to 50%.
• Snow Build & Blast
• Snowflow Mountain
• Photos with Santa
• Naughty or Nice Escape Room

• Closed-toed shoes are required.

Use the pencil to draw a small circle on the mini canvas. This will help children know where to add their fingerprints.
2. Add green paint to a paper plate. You can use between 1-3 shades of green paint for the wreath.
3. Now it’s time to paint! Dip one finger in any shade of green paint on the paper plate,
and then dab it onto the circle on the canvas. Alternate the colors for the wreath.
4. If you want to add a little sparkle to your wreath, sprinkle glitter over the wreath while it’s still wet. Then set the canvas aside to dry completely.
5. Glue mini red pompoms on the wreath to represent berries.
6. Finally, use ribbon to create a bow, then glue it to the top of the wreath. Cut another piece of ribbon to glue at the back of the canvas to complete your ornament. Allow it to dry for at least 15 minutes before hanging the ornament on the Christmas tree.
A FESTIVE FEAST: SNACKS AND HOLIDAY INSPIRED LUNCH IDEAS
by Jenny P of @lunchboxmafia
This time of year we’re all extra busy with fun outings, get-togethers and taking in all that the holidays have to offer. Don’t forget to slow down and relish these moments—especially with your kiddos. Here’s one way to enjoy the season, through savoring the flavors of these holiday inspired snacks!
Make a Char-cuter-TREE:
Welcome your children home from school with a festive snack board with their favorite snacks arranged in the shape of a Christmas tree.
Savor Hot Lunches on Cooler Days:
Packing a hot lunch is like sending a warm hug. We love leftovers for lunch packed in our thermos. When in doubt, send breakfast! A warm bowl of their favorite oatmeal with eggs, sausage and some fruit will definitely hit the spot!
TIP: Heat your thermos with boiling hot water for at least five minutes before packing their lunch so that it’s hot until lunchtime.
COOKIE CUTTERS MAKE LUNCHBOX MAGIC!
Holiday cookie cutters are everywhere right now. Did you know you can use them for sandwiches too?
• Don’t toss your cut outs. Use them to make smaller sandwiches.
• Use honey and a toothpick to stick sprinkles into your bread.
TIPS:
• Make it colorful.
• Add food picks for extra fun.
• Snack boards are a great low pressure way to introduce new foods.
• Offer treats like candy canes or chocolate along with fruits and veggies.
Muffin tins (such as this one in the picture in the shape of a tree) is also an easy way to offer snacks. I like to set out toppings for chili or tacos in this muffin pan for a festive touch. Try it with grown-up guests too to spread some cheer.
Come say hello on Instagram and Facebook at @Lunchboxmafia Let me know if you try any of these ideas. Enjoy all the holiday moments!!
Make it merry, Xo Jenny

8 Tips for Creating a Family Cookbook
by Dalia Colón
This holiday season, the most cherished gift is one that can’t be bought in any store: a family cookbook.
“It’s a super-special thing to have,” says Janet Keeler, Eckerd College food journalism instructor and author of “Cookielicious: 150 Fabulous Recipes to Bake & Share.”
Here are some tips for putting together your own family recipe collection:
1. Find your why.
What is your goal? To compile recipes that anyone can replicate? To make a place to collect family memories? Or both? Knowing your “why” will help you home in on an approach.
2. Start early.
Writing a cookbook is no small task. (Trust me on this.) If you can’t pull it off in time for this year’s holiday gifts, then start strategizing for next year. Ask relatives to bring recipes and photos to this year’s holiday dinner. While everyone is gathered around the table, pull out your phone and record videos or voice memos as folks recall their fondest food memories. Use these stories in the recipes’ headnotes. The cookbook will make a great gift to distribute next holiday season, at an upcoming family reunion or anytime.
3. Gather the recipes.
Look through family recipe boxes, newspaper clippings and favorite cookbooks. Narrow them down to a few dozen favorites so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Organize the recipes by category, such as appetizers, main dishes and desserts.
4. Work smarter, not harder.
Use an online service like Shutterfly or Mixbook, which allow you to design the cookbook and print multiple copies at the touch of a button. And don’t go it alone. “It’s a good idea if you can enlist some help,” Keeler says, noting that kids and teens can be quite useful. “Somebody has to be in charge, though.”
5. Tweak old recipes.
Generations ago, cookbook authors assumed that readers had basic kitchen skills. But “Cook the casserole ‘til it’s done” won’t fly today. Test the recipes so your directions will be as precise as possible: “Bake the casserole at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown.” Also, update any out-of-date ingredients. “Nobody cooks with margarine anymore,” Keeler notes.
6. Be specific.
The “handful of flour” and “scoop of butter” in Aunt Myrtle’s poundcake – how much is that, exactly? And what kind? If Aunt Myrtle is still living, then follow her around the kitchen as she makes the cake, so you can write down exact ingredients. Afterward, take a photo together with the finished cake. If she’s deceased, then enlist a few recipe testers to come to a consensus on the recipe.
7. Include photos of hand-written recipes.
A hand-written recipe is a cherished family heirloom, says Chef Judi Gallagher of Sarasota, author of the cookbook “Reflections & Recipes of Chef Judi.” She recalls stumbling across a recipe card that contained her late sister’s penmanship. “When I saw that with her handwriting after she had passed, it felt like a warm hug from her,” Gallagher says. “You see the food in the corner of the card, because they'd been using it so much and maybe touching it when they were cooking.”
8. Go high-tech.
To bring old family recipes into the 21st century, consider making a website. In addition to the recipes, it can contain videos of food demonstrations, relatives telling stories about their favorite dishes and space for family members to comment on the recipes.
Dalia Colón is the author of “The Florida Vegetarian Cookbook,” which is available at local retailers including Oxford Exchange, Tombolo Books, Black English Bookstore and more. It is also available online via University Press of Florida, Barnes and Noble, Target, Thriftbooks and other websites. It makes a great gift.

Discover History and Fun at Fort Christmas Historical Park
by Dani Meyering
If you're searching for a unique family outing, Fort Christmas Historical Park in Christmas, Florida, offers a mix of history, outdoor fun, and holiday magic. Located just a short drive from Orlando, this hidden gem is especially popular during the holiday season, when families flock to send letters postmarked from the charmingly named town of "Christmas."
Step Back in Time
The centerpiece of the park is a full-size replica of a 19th-century fort, complete with artifacts and exhibits that provide insight into the lives of Native Americans and early settlers in the area. The grounds also feature several historic homesteads, some dating back to the late 1800s. Families can wander in and out of these homes, gaining a glimpse of how life used to be—discovering, for example, how entire families shared one bed or relied on outdoor outhouses. It’s a fascinating way for kids to experience history in a hands-on way.
Playgrounds and Picnic Spots
Beyond the historical exhibits, the park offers plenty of space for play and relaxation. Children will love the fort-themed playground, designed to inspire imaginative adventures. Meanwhile, parents can spread out for a picnic or use one of the park’s open-fire grill pits to cook a family meal.
Holiday Magic at the Post Office
One of the highlights of visiting during the holiday season is the town’s old post office. Beautifully decorated each year, it adds festive charm to the experience. Families love mailing holiday cards from here, making it a fun tradition to send greetings with a postmark from Christmas, Florida.
Whether you’re looking to explore Florida’s past, enjoy a picnic in the fresh air, or experience some holiday cheer, Fort Christmas Historical Park offers a perfect blend of education and fun. It’s a free family-friendly destination worth adding to your list this season.

Meet the Performer Bringing Holiday Cheer to Cirque Mechanics: Winter Wonder Shoppe
by Dani Meyering
This holiday season, the magic of the circus meets the joy of the holidays as the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts transforms into a dazzling spectacle with Winter Wonder Shoppe. Running from Dec. 12-29, under the big top at the Seneff Arts Plaza, this three-week event will feature the gravity-defying performances of Cirque Mechanics. As the big top rises on the lush lawn of downtown Orlando's cultural hub, families and circus lovers alike are invited to experience awe-inspiring acrobatics, whimsical characters, and breathtaking feats.
I had the opportunity to chat with Jan Damm, one of the show’s main performers, to learn more about life on tour with Cirque Mechanics, what audiences can expect, and how the spirit of the holidays shines through in this extraordinary show.
Read on to discover Jan’s “Cherry” and “Pit” moments of touring life, what drives their creativity, and a few surprises awaiting audiences at Winter Wonder Shoppe.
OP: I would like to start off with a tradition from my own family. Each night when we sit down at the dinner table we ask about each other’s cherry and pit for the day. The cherry is the highlight of the day, and the pit is the lowlight. Fun right?
What’s your Cherry (something sweet) about being on tour?
Jan: One of my favorite parts of touring life is visiting and working in performing venues. With a company like Cirque Mechanics, the venues really run the gamut from huge opera houses to small vaudeville theaters, historic ballrooms, arenas, and everything in between. Each one has its own unique history and the show changes to fit the place! Now with our tent we are creating new history.
OP: What’s your Pit (something not so sweet) about being on tour?
Jan: Sometimes it's hard to eat as healthy as I would like, and being away from home (I live in Vermont) for long stretches is tough.
OP: What’s something you’re interested in besides performing?
Jan: I enjoy small woodworking projects. I like to build practical things like circus props or simple furniture for my house. My favorite project I've done is Shaolin-inspired handstand benches. Of course this is also one of the things I admire about Cirque Mechanics, they build amazing original props!
OP: What was your favorite subject growing up?
Jan: Economic History. I actually majored in Econ in college before making a hard turn into clowning and circus! I still love learning about history.
OP: What’s something that will surprise the audience about this performance?
Jan: Our trademark is combining amazing acrobatic contraptions with whimsical characters, but it's still a circus! I think the most surprising thing about the show is the worldclass level acrobatics and skills that punctuate each act.
OP: How has your family inspired you to pursue your interests in entertainment?
Jan: My mother was a pediatrician and was very connected to family/community events where I grew up. I had always been a real ham, and when I learned to juggle, she bought me a costume and simply started booking me to appear at children's fairs. I performed hundreds of shows in my hometown between the ages of 11 and 15! Both my parents also supported my interest in theater and comedy. To this day I feel most at home on stage and I credit this to my early experience.
OP: Since this special engagement takes place during the holidays, what is your favorite holiday tradition or memory?
Jan: One year my cousins and I all got lightsabers for Christmas. We went outside to play with them and had a huge tournament. This was in sub-zero temperatures in Vermont, and I believe all the swords cracked and broke! I don't think we cared, because we were having so much fun.
OP: Describe this show / performance using 3 words.
Jan: Laughter, Thrills, Wonder!
Jan Damm has been touring in the U.S. and internationally as a circus artist for over 10 years. Originally from Maine, he has worked street corners, big top tents, theaters and opera houses, rural schoolyards, and on screen. He specializes in clown, juggling, acrobatics, balancing and eccentric skills.
As Winter Wonder Shoppe takes center stage this December, Jan and the rest of the Cirque Mechanics cast are ready to bring joy and wonder to Orlando families. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unforgettable holiday experience filled with laughter, thrills, and festive cheer under the big top.
Live! at The Pointe: Orlando's New Vibrant Nightlife District
by Dani Meyering
If you’re looking for an electrifying night out in Orlando, Live! at The Pointe is the newest spot in town. Nestled within the bustling Pointe Orlando entertainment complex, this vibrant district combines nightlife, music, and dining into a seamless experience that feels like an all-night block party.
WHERE TO PLAY AT LIVE! AT THE POINTE
As I arrived on the night of the grand opening, I felt a certain sense of nostalgia. Being born and raised in the Orlando area, I’ve seen Pointe Orlando evolve over the decades. And now this new block-party-style venue brings a fresh new energy that is also reminiscent of my younger days.
The new Live! district offers multiple venues, each with its own personality. Shark Bar sets a tropical, beachside vibe with beach vacationstyle drinks, perfect for anyone dreaming of an endless summer. If country music is your thing, the PBR Cowboy Bar brings a honky-tonk flair with line dancing, a mechanical bull, and live country bands that’ll have you tapping your toes without even realizing it.
I felt most at home at Sports & Social, a massive venue that is perfect for sports fans and gatherings of friends. My fellow attendees could not help themselves as they devoured the delicious food - truly elevated
above typical sports bar food. The energy felt unmistakable. This place is perfect for a friendly gathering to catch the game or celebrate.
For a touch of sophistication, the Houndsmen Lounge offers an upscale yet relaxed atmosphere, complete with craft cocktails and cozy seating. During the grand opening guests packed in shoulder to shoulder. I can’t wait to come back for a date night with my husband.
And in late November, the Palm Tree Club will join the lineup, offering an escape into coastal elegance. A touch of Miami-vibes can be felt at this new venue. We’re looking forward to visiting soon!
WHY WE LOVE IT
One of the standout features of Live! at The Pointe is being able to stroll between venues, drink in hand, during special events—making it a paradise for bar-hoppers and social butterflies. Expect regular programming like silent discos, watch parties, and taco festivals, ensuring that no two nights are ever the same.
For local adults seeking something new and a place to take those who are visiting, Live! at The Pointe is a fresh addition to the city’s nightlife scene. It’s the perfect blend of highenergy entertainment and laid-back luxury.
