There is nothing more fun than attending an event, having a great time and at the same time you are helping a local organization. March and April is packed with great events which benefit some truly worthy causes. 2008 Tampa Bay Heart Ball, an elegant celebration of life, with proceeds benefiting the American Heart Association is April 12. Call (727) 563-8000. The American Heart Association is the nation’s premier volunteer health agency dedicated to reducing disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke, the nation‘s No. 1 and No. 3 killers The Suncoast Arts Fest, April 26 and 27, which raises funds to benefit Art For Kids in Pasco County. Each year, funds raised go toward helping the advancement of services for visual and performing art needs of kids in Pasco County schools, both public and private. Tampa is finally getting a state of the art Children’s Museum and will give the children and families of this community a new resource – one that will allow them the freedom to IMAGINE, PLAY, and GROW while learning through play. On April 26, the Glazer Children’s Museum will host the Imagination Gala to raise funds for the building of the new museum in downtown Tampa. As a board member, this one is close to my heart. So get a babysitter and go on a DATE with your spouse and enjoy some of these great events.

e all want to make an effort to save the Earth, right? But what mother has time to crusade for global warming awareness when she’s juggling soccer practice, carpooling, and planning play dates? Well for those busy, multi-tasking mothers who want to take an active approach to saving our environment, April is a great time to start. April is the month that goes green during Earth day awareness. If rallying supporters is too much, begin your campaign for cause with some of the following earth saving products that are not only helpful for our environment, but are also beneficial for us and baby too! Bosoms, Bellies, and Bums
MD Mom’s Baby Silk line of products
earth friendly saving the earth one baby at a time
BY JOEZETTE HITE
Dealing with the many causes and concerns for your little ones is enough to make any mother go crazy at times. For the most part, mothers trust that the products they buy off the shelves is safe for their babies and children to use, however, many of these products contain additives that are irritating to a baby’s skin. So why expose our tots to products that could potentially cause adverse side effects? MD Moms: MD Moms has created a line of products that contain high-quality ingredients like marine silk, Vitamin E and B5, shea butter and licorice extract. Did I mention that the MD Moms creators are not only board-certified doctors with years of training, but are also mothers concerned about the products they use on their own children? They know the importance of using products that are safe and effective, yet gentle for your baby. A popular and award-winning product they recently introduced is the Baby Silk Babysafe Sunscreen Towelettes. These convenient towelettes contain a gentle, sweat-proof, broad spectrum SPF 30 + that’s enriched with Vitamin E and B5, marine silk, aloe and oat to protect, soothe and moisturize baby’s skin. What more could a mom ask for, especially a Florida mom who’s always out and about with tot in tow? Available at MDMoms.com or at Seedlings in South Tampa, www.seedlings.com or Broomstick Baby in Riverview, www.broomstickbaby.com. Earth Mama Angel Baby: Any mother who has watched their baby suffer in pure agony over irritating diaper rash, can now breathe a sigh of relief with the discovery of the highly coveted Earth Mama Angel Baby’s Angel Baby Bottom Balm. A best selling salve that helps heal existing diaper rash and protects against flare ups, this product is also vegan and the only balm made with organic olive oil infused with a proprietary blend of organic herbs, shea butter and naturally antibacterial and antifungal essential oils. Gentle and safe enough for your baby’s bum! Available at Nordstrom’s and earthmamaangelbaby.com.

Savvy Fashion Goes Organic – For the Wee Ones Parents who want to help the environment and are fashion conscience, but don’t want to sacrifice style – need not worry! Fashion has gone green! According to the nonprofit Sustainable Cotton Project, the making of a simple T-shirt may involve the use of a third of a pound of agricultural chemicals as well as other shocking chemicals like ammonia and formaldehyde. Fortunately designers and manufacturers have taken note and have created certified organic cotton clothing without the pesticides and chemicals found in conventional cotton. These organic pieces aren’t just suitable, natural, and irresistibly adorable for your baby, but they’re great for our environment! Kee-Ka: Simple, yet clever nicknames and emblems rest on the apparel designs of Kee-Ka. From the adorable baby tee with a peanut pictured on the front of it or, my favorite, the monkey 3-piece baby set including a bib, burp cloth, and bodysuit- a newborn essential that every new baby should own! Parent’s can rest assured that when they dress their little ones in the ultrasoft fabric that’s created organically and packaged in a ready-tomade gift box from recycled paper, they are also preserving the environment. Available at Seedlings in South Tampa.
Kee-Ka Honey Bunny T-shirt
Tiny Revolutionary: Parents who want to teach their babies and children the importance of going green and saving the earth can do so by snagging up Tiny Revolutionary organic cotton products with great messages. This earth-friendly online boutique offers eye-catching onesies and toddler tees which sport green messages such as “I’ll Change the World Someday” and “Save Some Green for Me”. So the next time your little curious converser asks you what his shirt says, you can tell him with an added explanation of what it is and what you and your family can do to help out! Available at Broomstick Baby, in Riverview.
Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm
Planet Friendly Toys After the media reported to millions of Americans the epidemic of hazardous lead toys that were on the shelves at many stores, or worse, in their children’s toy boxes – parents became frantic. Not only did parents have to rummage through their child’s toys to get rid of the bad, but also many parents seemed to have no option as to how to replace them. That is until word spread of some toy companies, in particular Haba, which creates environmentally conscious toys. According to Haba they “place a premium on and abide by the pertinent environmental legislation and regulations” set forth; something to bare in mind especially when there are many manufacturers who do not follow such strict ethics or guidelines. Haba has an extraordinary collection of eco-friendly toys for infants and children. Available at Silly Dilly Tot Spot in South Tampa.
Colorful, sturdy clutching toy from HABA. With a mirror and squeaker. Made of Beechwood.

get ready cause here it comes mentally preparing for summer
S
BY LOREN BUCKNER, LCSW
ummer is a great time of year for parents -- no school, no homework, no projects, and no report cards. We get a little reprieve from the stress of keeping so many of their balls in the air. Right?
Well, not completely. For many of us, summer is filled with its own challenges. Structuring the week without school in the picture can get complicated. Working parents need to figure out where their kids can go and how to get them there. Stay-athome parents need to find organized activities and fulfill their everyday responsibilities. Finding enough for kids to do without over-scheduling them is a balancing act, and then there are our own hectic schedules to consider. Dinner-time, bed-time, play-time, and individual down time are all affected by the arrival of summer. Older kids look forward to longer days, later nights, sleeping in, and chilling out -- not exactly a schedule parents feel comfortable with. Summer offers many wonderful opportunities for fun and relaxation. But we may also find ourselves even more concerned about where they are and what
they’re doing. The demands of parenthood aren’t seasonal. Providing children with a secure home base has huge implications for us. We know that our availability (psychologically, emotionally, and physically) is essential to their healthy development. Our ability to be thoughtfully present in our kid’s lives is vital to their developing feelings of self-confidence and an overall trust in the world as a safe place. Whether they’re in school, at camp, home alone or at a friend’s house, these responsibilities of parenthood don’t change. Our children need us to be good role models, provide structure, and set reasonable limits. What makes this so difficult is kids don’t know that they need this from us. They have their own agendas. “Mom, its summer, and Michelle’s parents are letting her stay out late.” Or, “There’s nothing to do here. All the kids are going to the mall.” They pressure us over and over to give in, change our minds, and compromise on what we think is right. The problem is we aren’t always sure; we want them to have fun and fit in. But we also want them to be safe and stay away from trouble. Being consistent under the barrage of their daily requests isn’t as clear cut as parenting books
summer program guide suggest or as we may have imagined when they were little and didn’t ask for very much. To make parenting even more interesting, at the same time as we’re providing structure and setting limits, we also need to encourage and support their independence. Plus, in addition to understanding and explaining the ups and downs of growing up, we have to bear their anger at us as we do all this. Inevitably, we get tired and don’t feel up to these awesome, seemingly never-ending, tasks of parenting. So we eventually give in and our best selves don’t always prevail. We say the wrong things. We want to be left alone. We also get our feelings hurt because we want to spend time with our kids but they’re too busy or aren’t interested in spending time with us. Family life is messy. Our expectations aren’t always realized. Parenthood sometimes feels unfair and burdensome, regardless of how much our children were wanted and are loved. This is parenthood! Good naturedly managing the particulars of family life takes dedication and generosity. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were simple solutions to the pressing challenges of parenthood? Tried and true rules or advice we could follow that would help us know when to say yes and when to stick with no. Anything simple and straight forward that would help us feel less overwhelmed and would make us all feel better when we’re confused and unsure of ourselves would be a terrific help.
Conscientious parenting is a deeply rewarding experience but there isn’t anything simple about it. Sometimes parenting knocks our socks off! Not because we are bad or inadequate parents, but because this is the nature of parenting. However, inside those trying times, and the corresponding painful and disturbing feelings, are meaningful opportunities for personal growth. They’re a chance to increase our understanding of ourselves and each other. Slowing down and quieting our minds allows us to think about what’s happening. We can consider why we feel the way we do and what we might need to feel better or make the right decision. Summer is a great time to take stock of things. Is home an emotionally safe place for everyone? Are we teaching our kids to be critical and judgmental or interested in themselves and in the world around them? Are feelings respected or ridiculed? And what about us? Are we taking care of ourselves, not by going to the gym, but by working on our most important relationships? Have we known that we need help but have been afraid to seek it out? These questions are tough and can be uncomfortable to think about. But how will we become the parents we dreamed we would one day be if we continue to sidestep them? Loren Buckner, LCSW lives in Tampa, Florida and has been a psychotherapist in private practice for more than 20 years. Married for 28 years, with two kids in college, she is the author of a forthcoming book on emotions and parenting.

the left-overs
the mess equals good times BY LISA BLACK
I classify as a biohazard due to its aromatic contents! Much to my dismay, I couldn’t pull it off! Chick-fil-A here I come… I flash back to my pre-child days with a clean car interior, the latest CDs all neatly tucked in a case, a skilled system for organizing all items, hanging file folders and a spare bag with all my essential emergency items. It was so clean and it was so nice. A nice little tidy life it was…
Y
ou know the story. Your child leaves his or her lunch box in the back seat of your car or worsethe garage. You receive this urgent message via cell phone in the middle of your dental visit. The message is that your child is crying hysterically because you forgot their lunch.
I am horrified. I call. The school personnel now thinks that in addition to forgetting coats, picture money, baked goods on a deadline---that I forgot food to nourish my child. I feel the need to explain that it really was in the back of my car or somewhere that she left it–they have heard that before I am sure. Please tell her I am on my way–never mind my half cleaned teeth and the planned vet visit. I look back and see it is not in the back seat and being far from home-begin considering my options. I laugh as I think of my dear friend that recently experienced the same dilemma. Upon realizing the absence of a lunch box for her daughter, she returned to the parking lot determined. She plundered through her car and came up with several mini-cans and bags of miscellaneous food items. Arms loaded and proud, she returned inside quickly only to be met by a teacher that gratefully explained that the food drive was over last week! She laughed and her daughter had something, or some things, for lunch. For fun, I begin going through my own car. Let’s see, I find a heap of old french fries lurking beneath the mats and under the seats. There’s the nicely melted, still in the wrapper candy chocolate heart from the Valentine’s party. Hmmm, there are a couple of cheeseburger tidbits in the wrappers in the trash. I find one item that I deemed miscellaneous because its skeletal remains left few cues as to what it once was! There’s the half eaten bag of Christmas cookies wedged behind the booster. I locate one sippy that I authorize as safe, and then another which
As I am driving, I glance around to see scattered art work, pieces of important paper scattered about, several homeless Happy Meal toys, paper with letters drawn in the handwriting of a three and five year old. There is a tote bag overflowing with articles and items to be read. Located in the rear view, another emergency bag stuffed with shirts and shorts for them-and me…just in case. Kid’s CDs are scattered and loose on the passenger seat. Water bottles, half full, are everywhere. There are hair accessories on the floor board. The windows are dirtied from little fingers chasing rain drops and drawing smiley faces. There’s my to-do list from last week with one item checked off. Receipts and old shopping lists are stuffed in the drink holders. Jackets of every sort are everywhere. There is a bottle of aspirin and some hand sanitizer rolling about. In the back, there is a park blanket, sand toys, a large canvas cooler and a first aid kit-all just in case. There’s the one winged kite and an umbrella that droops. The activity bag hovers in the corner for those long waits at the doctor’s office. And of course, there is the mini toilet and toilet paper for those potty training emergencies. Yes, it is a “we have been everywhere” and “we are prepared for anything mess”. And a nice little messy life it is…we are busy and they are loved. We feel judged by the neatness of our homes, our clothes and our cars. In this Martha world, appearances and order seem to mean everything. But does it? When I look at all the stuff in my car, it reminds me that this is what matters the most-going and growing with my daughters. The mess isn’t pretty, but it sure is fun. And each weekend as we load the girls up for another family adventure, my adorable husband will continue to sigh as he sifts through the piles of “car-bage”. He doesn’t and never will understand the nature of this mess. And that’s ok…just don’t tell him that when I take his brand new truck for my solo outings, that I savor my dripping bean burrito while listening to Sirius radio and leave a few wrappers and notes behind-just for him! tbparenting.com

POCO PATTINO GOES GREEN Poco Pattino has a strong commitment to preserving the environment for our children. The shoe business is notorious for the waste produced by cardboard, tissue, shoeboxes, and even worn shoes. That is why Poco Pattino has made a few changes. They switched from their signature glossy lime paper bags to a cloth, reusable lime “green” bag. “Everyone is loving the new bags to be able to use elsewhere (grocery store, pool, or toting all the kids’ knickknacks and snacks)” says Leigh Peters, owner. When you bring your Poco Pattino cloth bag back in you receive $1.50 off your purchase each time – “We are passing the savings on to our customers when they reuse their bags.” Poco Pattino also offers to recycle all paper based products associated with their customer’s shoe purchase. In addition, Poco Pattino supports the “Soles4Souls” organization by collecting gently used shoes that then are sent to underprivileged children all over the world. Beginning April 1st, customers who wish to donate their gently used Poco Pattino shoes to “Soles4Souls” will receive a 15% discount on their next purchase. Poco Pattino opened three years ago specializing in quality and fashionable children’s shoes, and now features a small ladies’ shoe boutique. They are located in the Southtown Center at 3830 W. Neptune St. (Neptune and S. Dale Mabry).

IDS Takes it to the Stage There’s one thing about producing a musical that middle school students at Independent Day School-Corbett Campus (IDS-CC) would emphatically agree with: while an ambitious and irrepressible window washer named Finch may be able to succeed in business at the World Wide Wicket Co. without really trying, producing a successful musical requires months of hard work, effort and commitment. It involves meeting challenges head on, and working through them. Memorizing lines. Perfecting dance steps. Getting into character and remembering where to stand. Managing school work and rehearsals. Working as a team by asking for help and offering help. Being a leader when needed, and allowing others to lead. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who had been enrolled in the IDS-CC middle school’s musical theater elective class since the beginning of the school year performed the Frank Loesser award-winning musical “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” during the second trimester. The production involved three casts, 40 students, three teachers, numerous parents, and countless hours of preparation and rehearsal. According to drama teacher Seth Travaglino and music teacher Barbara McBride, what made this production unique was that three separate casts performed. Each student had a leading or supportive role and a feature or minor role, as well as worked behind the scenes as part of the technical crew. “ “It was more complicated with three casts,” said Travaglino, “but doing it this way gave all of our students the opportunity to shine, in addition to teaching them about responsibility and the importance of being self-less. They had the opportunity to succeed on stage, themselves, as well as to help someone else succeed on stage. If you’re moving a prop or setting up a new scene, you have someone else’s success in your hands. That’s an awesome responsibility.” “The life skills it takes to put on a production encompass so much and will be so valuable for the rest of their lives,” said McBride. “These skills will help them create real and lasting success no matter what field of endeavor they pursue.” Eighth grader Michelle Newberger agrees. “One thing I learned by participating in this experience was how to work well with others,” she said. “The teamwork I learned will help me a lot in the future.” Founded in 1968, Independent Day School-Corbett Campus is a fully accredited, independent school located on Orange Grove Drive in northwest Hillsborough County with 550 students from PreK3 through 8th grade. At IDS, all children experience learning in a nurturing and highly academic environment focused on excellence and developing a positive self-concept. IDS-CC has become recognized as an exemplary school with over 3,500 visitors observing and learning from and with IDS-CC teachers. For more information about IDS visit www.idsyes.com.

every ting is alright great family trip to St. John BY PJ GOETZ
I
n the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea is the picture perfect island of St. John. The smallest of the United States Virgin Islands, over 60 percent is designated as a National Park, so development has been kept to a minimum. We spent our time on St. John surrounded by natural beauty and enjoying our escape from the real world. We arrived by ferry as a full moon rose over the bow of our boat. It was the beginning of a great trip. We stayed at Gallows Point Lodge located in Cruz Bay where the ferry docks are located. An open air taxi took us less than a mile to the front desk. Our room opened, literally opened, to the bay and ocean. Music from bands in Cruz Bay drifted in our windows and put us to sleep almost every night. At the resort coffee shop “Every Ting”, Linda offered to arrange everything we wanted to make our stay perfect. She went the extra mile to make sure that our trip was incredible.

Snorkeling is one of the most poplar activities on the island. Everyday of our stay on St. John’s found us snorkeling with the kids. We stayed in the water most days only getting out long enough to grab some lunch then headed back in. We snorkeled our way around the Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine

island and every spot we visited offered great underwater views. Our resort had excellent snorkeling with a swimming platform for little ones to rest on while mommy enjoyed spying on the parrotfish below. Our personal island favorite underwater spots were: Via’s Campground and Waterlemon (not watermelon) Kay. At Via’s you put $1.50 per person in a coffee can at the gate to the beach. On the beach we pulled two chairs under some mangrove trees and enjoyed their shade all day. Snorkeling among the rocks we saw a large octopus enjoying a conch and swam though schools of brightly colored fish and squid. It was one of those days that I will always remember. Wild donkeys roam the island and pass you on the beach. We rented a boat one day and made our way to Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. Our boys played with a boy who lives on the island and learned that all boys love batman and climbing trees. If you decide to go, I would highly recommend renting a car and exploring the island at your family’s own pace. Driving on St. John’s, however, is not for the faint of heart. The island has only a few roads and most of them are small, twisting, turning roads that are uphill or downhill depending on which way your going. And driving on the left hand side of the road can take some getting use to. But when your kids have had enough of a particular beach and are ready to move you will have the freedom to do so. Beautiful waters, wonderful white sand beaches and happy friendly locals make St. John’s a great island get-away. Tips: When the cruise ships anchor off shore, Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay quickly fills up. On those days head to the East End to avoid the crowds. No Passport is required, but you will need to bring a birth certificate for everyone because you pass through customs when departing St. Thomas for home even if you did not leave the US Virgin Islands. If you have passports bring them to speed up the process and you can also use your passport if you want to travel to the neighboring British Virgin Island.
Nowhere else in the Caribbean offers such a good vacation value as the US Virgins. Secluded beaches. National Parks. Duty-free shopping. Campgrounds. Kayaking. Hiking. Ecological tours. World-class diving. Superb sailing. Tropical forests. Local craftsmen. Island art. Sunbathing. Fine Dining. Nightlife. And it’s all wrapped up in the safety, security, and efficiency of the American flag. The United States Virgin Islands. St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. Three lively islands -- one gentle people. hances are, the last time you told your child that eating junk food is unhealthy, that well-meant information went in one ear and out the other. Next time, mention that to work off the calories in the hamburger, fries and soda he just consumed he’ll have to wash the dog for 35 minutes, play basketball for 58 minutes and make his bed continuously for more than two hours. Then, you’ll probably have his full attention. Getting kids to focus on the importance of healthy eating and exercise is the focus of Kidz Bite Back. The campaign is the nation’s only kid-led counter-marketing campaign that educates kids on the influence of fast food, soft drink and junk food companies (a.k.a. Big Fat Industries) on eating habits and the influence of TV networks and video game companies on physical activity. “The health of children in our country would greatly improve if every kid in our nation would eat better and be
more active,” said Mike Aubin, administrator of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. “This program encourages kids to make healthy decisions that can permanently improve their lifestyle.” According to the Kidz Bite Back Campaign, elementary school students are the key to making a dent in the childhood obesity epidemic. That’s why they’ve trained more than 3,000 “Kidz Advocates” throughout the Tampa Bay area to educate their friends and families about Big Fat Industries and Couch Potato Companies.

Pinellas County Health Department was the initial sponsor of the Tampa Bay Kidz Bite Back campaign, which started in the Fall of 2007 with 16 schools (eight in Pinellas County, eight in Hillsborough County), along with the help of three other sponsors: St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, Allegany Franciscan Ministries, and the Hillsborough County Health Department. Both school districts are partners and the campaign hopes to continue adding more schools to the list. After seeing Big Fat Industries 101 and Couch Potato Companies 101 presentations at a recent Kidz Bite Back event, Gulfport Elementary School students were deemed ‘smarter than most adults on the topic.’ “These ‘Kidz’ know more than 95 percent of the American population on this topic, and they’re going to be spreading the word to their friends and families,” said Douglas A. Holt, M.D., Director, Hillsborough County Health Department. New Charter Elementary School Brings Choice Imagine School at St. Petersburg is part of a national non-profit organization, Imagine Schools, Inc., which currently operates more than 55 schools nationwide in conjunction with local boards.
dates:
“These new schools will offer students and their parents the benefits of a quality private school education in a free public school setting,” said John Selover, principal of the Imagine School at Land O’ Lakes. Like private schools, students at both schools will be required to wear uniforms, and the schools will be held accountable to parents and a local community board. Like public schools, there is no cost to attend because funds are provided from state taxes. “Parent involvement is very important at Imagine because of our strong emphasis on character education,” said Robert Connor, principal of the Imagine School at St. Petersburg, “Our parents are expected to participate and volunteer at least 20 hours each year.” The school is built around the concept of Project CHILD (Changing How Instruction for Learning is Delivered), a unique education model which allows students to work with the same teachers over a three-year period. The Project CHILD concept was initially developed at the Institute for School Innovation in Tallahassee, Fla. in 1988 by Dr. Sarah Butzin, a Florida State University researcher and former classroom teacher, who wanted to create a better instructional system with more computers, hands-on learning and joyful classroom environments. “Fifteen years worth of research studies on the program have shown that Project CHILD students get higher test scores, have fewer discipline referrals, and do better in middle school,” said Butzin, “Project CHILD students enjoy coming to school because they can be active as well as successful.” Imagine School at St. Petersburg will be located at 1950 First Avenue North near downtown St. Petersburg. The building is currently undergoing extensive renovation and will be ready for classes to begin this August, according to Connor. While the first year will only include pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, the school plans to add a sixth grade in 2009, seventh grade in 2010 and an eighth grade in 2011. The school will be open to any student eligible to attend a Pinellas County school. In addition to the Steeplechase horse races, there were Jack Russell terrier races, a carriage parade, a party pavilion with musical entertainment, a hat contest, children’s activities, and a beer garden in the infield. Sharon and Bob Blanchard, who own the 2,000-acre Little Everglades Ranch, started the Steeplechase in 2000 as a community event to benefit charity. Word is spreading about this local event. Arch Kingsley is a horse trainer and former jockey visiting from South Carolina. He says the Steeplechase in Dade City is the Wimbledon of race courses. “This little everglades event is top notch, we travel the circuit and go to these races all up and down the east coast and there isn’t a better one or more entertaining venue as far as I’m concerned” Honorary chair and Tampa Bay Buccaneer Ronde Barber agrees. “I think that’s the attraction, that you can bring your whole family to a really fun event at a very beautiful venue and have a lot of fun and at the same time benefit some good charities” Over 16,000 people were expected to attend this year. Mike Campbell, a spokesman for the event, said this might be the first year for the Steeplechase, to make a profit. So far, the Blanchards have paid the charities from their own pockets; they donated more than $80,000 last year. Steeplechase races take time to actually make money, Campbell said. The event began in 2000 and last year was the first time it came close to breaking even. Proceeds from the event will benefit Diabetic Charitable Services, Quantum Leap Farm, and the Pioneer Florida Museum and Village. BY LAUREN HOYT-WILLIAMS
busch gardens brings fun and learning all in one fantastic new attraction here’s a way to learn about the lush jungle villages of the world, to explore the worlds of exotic, endangered animals, to traverse the layers of the jungle, all without leaving the area.
Kids Fact: Did you know that orangutans spend most of their lives in trees and travel by swinging from branch to branch with their long arms, which when stretched out are longer than their bodies – more than 7 feet from fingertip to fingertip?
There’s Jungala, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay’s newest attraction, which opens this month. The four-acre attraction set in the Congo area features a wide range of both fun and educational opportunities.
You can also get up-close views of Bengal tigers in their subterranean caves or plunge pools. Kids Fact: Did you know
Jungala is an exotic venue where discovery and exploration invite guests to connect with the world around them. A centerpiece village is alive with the sights and sounds of this jungle paradise. There are new multi-tiered animal habitats, featuring Bengal tigers, orangutans, flying foxes, gibbons and gharials. New rides includes Jungle Flyers, a multi-level zip line that offers young adventurers three different flight patterns above the tree tops, and Wild Surge, which launches 14 passengers out of a mountain crater above a towering waterfall for a thrilling view of the village below. Tree Tops Trails features climbing nets, bridges and crawl tubes for kids to explore the layers of jungle life.
Reconnecting children to the natural world is an aim with Jungala. The more fun they can have in making that connection, the stronger that connection can be.
tigers are one of four cats in the world that can roar? A tiger’s roar can be heard up to two miles away!
The goal is one not just of Busch Gardens and its parent company, Busch Entertainment Corporation, but it is a goal of the Conservation Fund and its 2007 initiative, the National Forum on Children and Nature as well. Keith Kasen, Busch Entertainment Corporation chairman and chief executive officer, is a member of the National Forum.
Taking note that over the past several decades children spend less time in the natural world and more Kids will have the chance to meet Jungala’s two signature rides are The Wild Surge and Jungle Flyers. The Wild Surge is a 4-story pneumatic ride that launches 14 time indoors and in animal ambassadors passengers out of a mountain crater up above a towering waterfall for a thrilling view of the jungle village below. Jungle Flyers is a structured activities, the initiative’s goal is to multi-level zip line that offers three different flight patterns above the treetops for young adventurers and their families throughout the day. raise awareness across Fun educational industries to bring attention back to the natural environment. activities will be presented regularly and live entertainment will be performed every hour. “We support the effort to get kids outside and learn the natural world,” said Bill Street, director of education for Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. By experiencing Jungala, kids are learning about conservation and protecting wildlife worldwide. The attraction is home to amazing animals from around the world, many that represent endangered species. Kids will learn about orangutans. The animals can be viewed as they maneuver overhead on O-lines, or below, by looking down to them as they laze in their hammocks through special glass platforms.
Yet that is something that Busch Gardens has long been doing with its conservation efforts. For nearly 50 years, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has been committed to wildlife and environmental conservation. The park has blossomed from a bird gardens attraction to one of North America’s largest zoos with more than 2,000 animals. Busch Gardens’ Conservation Education Department has long offered guests numerous opportunities to learn about conservation during their visit through interactive presentations and bringing animal ambassadors face to face with guests. tbparenting.com
