It’s also time to give our gardens and yards some TLC and the timing couldn’t be more perfect with Earth Day arriving on the 22nd. Of course we should be concerned about the environment and the kind of world we’ll leave for future generations year-round, but Earth Day provides the opportunity for us to really reflect on this fact. Celebrate the day at familyfriendly events across the Bay area. You can check out some on page 36.

The ABCs of choosing a summer camp BY KIMBERLEY BROWN SMITH

It’s right up there at the top of the to-do-list: sign kids up for summer camp.

“Many families want to have variety in the summer experience and will choose to send their kids to different ones.”

Only one of my boys is school-age right now and he’s still young enough to attend a daycare type program. But I know the time is coming when he and his brothers will crave the activity-filled summer that other camps can offer.

For parents considering a sleepaway camp, you have to explore whether your child is emotionally ready to spend a couple of weeks away from home without mom and dad to tuck them in.

More than six million children attend summer camp each year, according to the National Camp Association. There are sports camps, arts and crafts programs, sleepaway sites and more. So, how do you go about choosing the right one? Sean Nienow, director of the NCA, says there is no one criteria that should be at the top of parents’ list. “You want to look at the activities, session length and culture of the camp to make sure they’re a good fit for your child,” Nienow says. If your child’s not into arts and crafts, a camp with that focus is probably not the best choice, he says. But many parents want to expose their children to a variety of activities and experiences and that’s just fine, Nienow says. “Choosing more than one camp is definitely appropriate,” he says.

“Some [children] are ready at five, but most are more like seven,” Nienow says. He warns parents that a little homesickness is normal, saying two weeks is a good minimum for having the kids away from home. “Sometimes it takes a couple days for the child to settle in and then they have the time of their life.” And even though you’ll miss them, there are many benefits of summer camp. It can help your child develop independence, build their self-esteem and teach them leadership skills, experts say. “Camp is full of memorable experiences that stay with you for a lifetime,” Nienow says. “It can be full of firsts – first canoe trips, first romances, first lifelong friendships.” Take a look at our summer camp listings at TBParenting.com for information on a variety of programs across the Tampa Bay area.

Get in touch with your wild side.

Summer camp at Busch Gardens and Adventure Island is a time to make new friends of the four-legged and two-legged variety, come face-to-face with a giraffe, plunge down water slides, ride a dive coaster, and create lasting memories. Summer camps are offered for students going into preschool through eighth grade and are offered weekly June-August.

ASK

Here are some questions that the National Camp Association suggests parents get the answers to before they decide on a summer camp. First narrow your list of possibilities and meet with the directors to ask: What percentage of campers return each year? If most kids are not coming back, there’s a reason for it.

Who are the staff members? How are they hired? Does the same staff tend to return year after year? Even though most staffers are students, a high turnover indicates a high degree of dissatisfaction.

+ ! % * "

***, & "# ! $", %+-

What is the counselor-camper ratio? One staff member for every four children is a good ratio.

This Summer Art Camp takes imaginations to new heights...

What facilities are available? What is the schedule like? Is it a structured program or one that emphasizes choice? What is the camp philosophy? Does it focus more on sports or arts? Is it a diverse program? What is the camp’s attitude pertaining to competitiveness? Is the camp accredited by an overseeing organization or by the state? An accredited camp will have stringent standards pertaining to health, safety and general programming, and it will be inspected on a regular basis.

Chasing the Clouds Away Busch Gardens debuts Sesame Street-themed playland Sunny days are ahead for parents and kids alike. Sesame Street Safari of Fun opened at Busch Gardens on March 27. The 2.5-acre play area within the adventure park is an oasis of fun with rides and adventures just for kids. And, of course, there are plenty of opportunities for hugs and high fives from the lovable characters. Air Grover, a coaster that parents and kids can ride together, is the area’s centerpiece. Plus, there’s a 3,000 square foot water play area, surrounded by a wall for parents to sit, supervise – and relax. And at Sesame Street Safari of Fun kids can enjoy unique versions of the characters. Elmo has tribal-inspired face paint, while Bert and Ernie wear safari gear.

Plus, Busch Gardens now has 44 spots for families with strollers so parents can skip the tram. No extra fee is required; you only need to ask for it at the tollbooths. Spaces are limited, though. Once inside, the kids can grab a version of the park map designed

Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine

April 2010

Families also can share breakfast or lunch with the characters. The experience is offered on a regular basis. Check availability at www. sesamestreetsafarioffun.com or call 1-888-800-5447. Characters visit each table as your family enjoys a buffet meal. You also are called up table by table to have your photo taken with the furry friends. The menu includes items sure to please both adults and kids. Visitors also can head over to the Timbuktu 4-D theater to watch “Sesame Street presents Lights, Camera, Imagination!”

Parents can enjoy the free, commemorative preschool pass that Busch Gardens is offering. All kids ages 5 and younger can take advantage of free admission in 2010. Parents just need to sign up at www.sesamestreetsafarioffun. com, then bring proof of age to the front gate.

take care of you

Be your best and don’t neglect your needs BY MARK HELLER

My message this month is straightforward and is largely inspired by journalist Arianna Huffington’s recent presentation at the annual conference of the National Association of Independent Schools. Huffington praised administrator like myself for the work we do to help children and families and urged us to be sure to take care of ourselves so that we might be at our best in doing our jobs. I would like to add that parents, teachers and all those who care for others, must also take care of themselves. This may sound simple, paradoxical, and perhaps a bit selfish, but it’s not. Helping children overcome obstacles they may face is critical to our future. Being a parent or a teacher is indeed a high calling. In raising our children to become the best they can be, we ought to be at our best or we risk doing less good. So here are some ways that we need to care for ourselves so that we can properly care for others. First and foremost, we must get enough sleep. In the October 2008 of Tampa Bay Parenting, my article Zzz’s for A’s: Sleep for School Success stressed the need for children and teens to get enough sleep. No less is true for those of us whose work lies in caring for and preparing our children to face the future. Good sleep habits of your own set a great example. It also increases our ability to be creators and not simply

reactors. How much sleep is enough? The general consensus is that adults need somewhere between seven and eight hours per night. Next, we must remember to find the joy in each day. Whether it’s your favorite tune on your iPod, a vanilla latte or the endorphin rush you get from exercising, finding joy allows you to live in a place of gratitude. We tend to focus on what is not working in our lives, but I urge you to recognize the power of positivity you can take from appreciating what is going right. I was reminded of this last fall when my school held an event to thank donors. Two of the speakers were students who had received full scholarships to attend our high school. One is now in her junior year at Princeton and the other is about to graduate from our high school. They both spoke of the gratitude they felt at being able to have had the experiences they had, how they never would have had those experiences without the gifts of those who were in the room and about their deep desire to give back because they had been given so much. The expression of appreciation was moving. The knowledge that my work had helped these young people on their paths also was incredibly satisfying and has helped to buoy my spirits for the past four months even when the stresses of work and life have threatened to intervene. Living in a place of gratitude inspires me not only to keep going, but also to do more. Third, know that perfect is unattainable. Just

as there is no leader who has made all the right decisions, so, too, are there no parents who have made all the right calls in the difficult process of raising a family. Working to understand where things went wrong can be helpful and positive, but dwelling on the negative often is counter-productive. We all need to learn to face the future in part by letting some of the past go. Take a step back, assess, breathe, and then move on. You may be surprised at your newfound ability to get things done and make sound decisions. Lastly, think big. Make sure that changing the world for the better is part of your child’s to-do list. Start at the family level by bringing out our caring for each other. Cultivate empathy. Give back. Make a difference for others. Instead of presents for your child at the birthday party, how about asking for presents to benefit a charity? Work to combat the natural trait of teenage narcissism by volunteering together. Know that we develop our “moral muscles” in the same way we develop our physical ones - by exercising them. Know that every project begins with small steps, and that what starts out as mere willingness can become intense passion. The work we do in preparing our nation’s youth to meet the future is of the highest order. If we are at our best when we do it, there is no limit to the good we can do. celebrating mother earth Tampa Bay family friendly events celebrating Earth Day

BY KIMBERLEY BROWN SMITH

It’s the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and the bandshell at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo will be rocking April 18 in celebration of Mother Earth. Lil Peppi, an 11-year-old eco-rapper from Tampa, is scheduled to perform at the annual Earth Day Tampa Bay festival.

The family-friendly event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. is free and so is parking. The bandshell is in front of the zoo at 1101 W. Sligh Ave. There also will be lots of other activities and events to enjoy in the days leading up to Earth Day on April 22.

He’s a YouTube sensation with several videos, including “Mother Nature’s Crying,” and Marcia Biggs, co-coordinator of the event organized by the Tampa Bay Sierra Club, says Lil Peppi’s performance should be entertaining for the kids and adults in the crowd.

Sweetwater Organic Community Farm will a hold a celebration from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 17, featuring a kids’ corner with naturebased activities, a question and answer session on Florida gardening and much more.

“We’re excited to have [Lil Peppi] at our event,” Biggs says. “He’s a great story and an inspiration.” There will be plenty of hands-on activities for the little ones, as well. “There will be lots of vendors with activities focused on recycling, conservation and arts and crafts projects,” Biggs says. While there will be plenty for the kids to do, there’s also a lot for mom and dad to check out. There will be more than 70 eco-friendly exhibitors offering food, natural and organic products and information on living an environmentally-sound life. The Urban Gypsies are the entertainment headliners.

Food and drink will be available for purchase but you also can bring a picnic lunch for the family to enjoy. The garden is at 6942 West Comanche Ave. in the Town and Country area of Tampa. Call 813887-4066 to learn more. The Island EarthDays celebration at Honeymoon Island State Park will offer live music, a Hawaiian outrigger race, bungee jumping and a rock wall during the two-day celebration April 17-18. There also will be activities and crafts for the kids, local vendors, guided walks in the woods and on the beach and plenty of fresh seafood, among other things. The event is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 17 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 18 at the picnic area next to the beach and wooded hiking trails. A donation of $8 per vehicle with up to eight occupants is the cost. The park is at 1 Causeway Blvd. in Dunedin. For details, call 727-738-2903. If you’re not into festivals, you always can visit the Florida Botanical Gardens. It’s open year-round, so you don’t have to wait until Earth Day to learn about sustainable gardening practices and conservation. There’s a children’s trail and admission is free. The garden, at 12520 Ulmerton Road in Largo, is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call 727-582-2100 or visit www.flgb.org to learn more.

Raising Kids to Make a Difference

BY KIMBERLEY BROWN SMITH

Whether playing sports, sitting in the classroom or singing in the school choir, kids are molded by the adults around them. So how can adults shape their young lives for the better?

through food donations. You can explore similar opportunities with food banks to directly connect your child to the hunger needs present in your community.

One way is to introduce kids to community service and show them the importance of bettering their own neighborhoods at an early age. Doing activities as a family or through school programs sets an example that can leave a lasting impression. After all, according to German/French philosopher Albert Schweitzer, “Example is not the main thing in influencing others, it is the only thing.”

Volunteer: Contact a rescue mission, nonprofit organization or senior citizens center to determine the best way to get your family involved. Rescue missions often need help sorting donations or making care packages for families in need. For a more hands-on approach, take your family to a senior citizens home or center so kids can play games or plant flowers with the elderly. By volunteering for a couple hours a week, kids are not only helping the community, they learn life lessons of generosity and service.

For parents and teachers wanting to encourage their kids and students to make a difference in the community, here are some tips for channeling their inner humanitarian: Identify Your Neighborhood’s Needs: Research the issues facing your community to find a cause you can support. Saving the world can get overwhelming, so narrowing the focus to a cause that you are passionate about is the best way to start. Libraries, schools, newspapers and Web sites can be good resources to discover where support is needed. Participate in a Food Drive: Hunger has no boundaries. Look to businesses, schools and churches that host food drives. For example, Doubletree Hotels works with students to host “Great Community Food Collection” drives, encouraging family, friends and fellow citizens to help feed the hungry

Lend a Hand with Hand-Me-Downs: Kids outgrow clothing faster than you can say “growth spurt.” Their closets turn into a black hole of clothing, benefiting nothing but the dust mites. One simple way to make a difference is to clean out the closets twice a year. Clothes and books that have not seen the light of day for a year or more can be donated to a donation center or shelter. Recycling Is a Walk in the Park: There are numerous ways to tweak your routine to improve the environment and beauty of the community. Take a weekly family walk through the park to gather litter and recyclables. Doing this activity together not only provides quality family time, it teaches kids the value of recycling and beautifies the neighborhood. Courtesy of NAPS

melt away fat? The down low on SmartLipo

BY FRANCIS E. TOSCANO, M.D., FACEP

H

ave you noticed that no matter how much you exercise or how carefully you diet there always seems to be a few little areas of fat that just won’t seem to go away? Maybe for you it’s a bulge at the hips, a little roll around the waist or a pooch left over from pregnancy. If this is how you feel, then SmartLipo might be for you? It has helped patients restore their self-esteem, improve their body image and regain a sculpted figure. Best of all, in the hands of an experienced practitioner, SmartLipo not only melts away the fat, it tightens skin. Until SmartLipo was developed, an answer for those problem areas has been traditional liposuction along with the risks of general anesthesia, large incisions, prolonged downtime and disappointing results because of loose skin. Laser body sculpting with SmartLipo is safe, painless and accurate. Recovery is so rapid that you can be chasing after your children or back in your office the very next day. IV lines and general anesthesia are not necessary, so you can eat and drink as you normally would before and even during

40

Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine

April 2010

SmartLipo body sculpting. The procedure usually involves numbing the skin with a local anesthetic and then making tiny incisions no larger than a quarter of an inch. A numbing solution is infused through the tiny incisions so the procedure is painless. The SmartLipo energy is carried by a thin fiber optic thread which glows softly as it melts and tightens. The laser energy stimulates the skin to produce new elastic collagen as the fat is liquefied. Your new shape is immediate and dramatic. Best of all, your skin continues to tighten and retract for weeks and months afterward. If you are considering laser liposuction, you should receive a consultation where the procedure is thoroughly explained and all of your questions are answered. Ask your doctor, “When did you start using a laser to perform liposuction? Has it been years or only a few months? How many laser cases have you done? Do you have photographs of your own laser patients?” Other questions to ask include: Is the physician board certified? What complications have your patients experienced? If I experience complications, what are your procedures for handling them? Costs for SmartLipo tend to be a little higher

TBParenting.com

than those of other modern liposuction techniques but after factoring in the substantially reduced downtime associated with laser liposuction the cost may be worth it. Although costs for SmartLipo vary depending on the size of the area to be treated; you can usually expect to pay about $1,700 to $7,000 per area treated. Of the many benefits with the procedure, one must consider the reduced downtime associated with this procedure when factoring in costs. By first melting the fat before removing it thru a vacuum, trauma to the surrounding tissue is minimized and patient’s recovery time is reduced. In addition, costs may vary slightly per physician and per body area. Asking the right questions about overlapping procedures on two or more treatment areas within a single visit, and how much downtime is typically required with each of your treatment areas, will help you to determine your total costs for the SmartLipo technique. Extraordinary Woman

Perseverance, a passion for life and education and a pleasing personality are all traits that describe Nicole Johnson. The Tampa Bay area native, who has a bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s degree in journalism and a master’s in public health, is working on her doctorate in public health at the University of South Florida. But there’s no rest for the extraordinary. She’s also a single mother managing Type 1 diabetes and a former Miss America who now serves as the director of education and outreach for the USF Diabetes Center and as president of Nicole Johnson Inc., which provides consulting and patient advocate services to Animas Corp., the Johnson and Johnson Diabetes Institute and AmMed Direct. Johnson says her career has been magical and that diabetes care is her passion. She was diagnosed in 1993 and has faced the challenge head on, helping others in the process.

Q: What is the secret to your success? A: Perseverance. I learned early in my adult life that nothing good comes without hard work and determination. Someone recently told me that the secret to courage is perseverance. I love that! Competing in the Miss America program for six years before winning certainly taught me a lot about risk, courage and perseverance. Living with diabetes also has taught me a great deal about success. Diabetes brings new challenges every day. It’s important to face these challenges aggressively and with discipline. For example, I check my blood sugar regularly, closely manage my food intake and incorporate exercise in as many aspects of my life as possible. I also aggressively seek education and take advantage of the latest care, therapies and technology available. Q: What is your biggest fear? A: I would say disappointing others. I have always been a “pleaser” personality. However, I do feel that my biggest fear is also one of my greatest attributes. Q: What goals have you set for yourself? A: One of my most recent goals is to create a first class diabetes research, education and care center at USF for people touched by diabetes. There is a tremendous need and I hope to use my experiences to help fill that need and make life with a challenging disease a little easier. I also hope that the diabetes programs we build at USF will be a template for new ways of caring for those living with chronic conditions. Medical care is being transformed in so many ways. As medicine changes and adapts to chronic care as opposed to acute care, I hope to be a part of building new, more relevant models that consider patient reality and environment. This is part of the reason I am now seeking a doctorate in public health. I want to be equipped to see my goals and dreams become a reality. Q: What advice would you give to other women? A: I think it is important to revere and respect the women who have gone before us and taught us how to live through their successes and challenges. One of my favorite examples is Helen Keller. She once noted, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through the experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.” This quote evens the field for all of us. We will all experience pain in our lives. The trick to living in your full potential is realizing how to learn from the pain and let the challenging moments shape your character and expand your heart. Q: What is your proudest moment? A: The birth of my daughter Ava; I will never forget that super-human feeling. The moment was amazing for so many reasons, but most of all because Ava had shown me that odds are meant to be defied; nevers are often meant to be

challenged. I was told, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, that I would never become a mother. Ava and science proved that wrong. Q: What is motherhood like for you? A: I love every aspect of being a mother. The laughter, the joy, the tears, the challenges - all are teaching me to be a better woman. I am grateful every day. The most challenging aspect for me is that I am a single parent and doing it all. Sometimes it is tough not to have a partner in the process. Q: How do you balance motherhood and work? A: Do we ever have true balance? I don’t. Some weeks I work too much, other weeks I play too much. My reality is tough. I am juggling parenting, work, graduate school and advocacy work. I think what suffers is the social outlets for me. Nearly every week I try something new to help my routine flow better and more smoothly. Q: What is your favorite thing about Tampa Bay? A: I love living in the Tampa area. The water is enchanting to me and the sky is unmatched in beauty. The natural elements of this region are what drew me back and are what keep me here. I feel that this area is a wonderful place to raise children and I am having a marvelous time exposing my daughter to all that our area has to offer. Q: What are your favorite things to do with your child in the Tampa Bay area? A: Listening to live music in the parks. We adore sitting on a blanket or dancing in the grass to music from local bands or even the Florida Orchestra. Outside of musical entertainment, we spend a lot of time at the Lowry Park Zoo. The zoo is such a relaxing place that always holds a new discovery for us. Q: What are your favorite restaurants to dine at together? A: Sweet Tomatoes. When we go, I know my little one will eat at least one vegetable and it somehow tastes so much better when I don’t have to prepare it! Q: Who has been your biggest inspiration? A: I draw a lot of inspiration from my colleagues at USF. Dr. Judy Genshaft (president), Dr. Stephen Klasko (vice president - USF health), Michael Hoad (vice president - communications) - all constantly inspire me to dream bigger and work harder. It is beautiful to have so much fun at work. I so enjoy and am grateful for the challenges and the constant opportunities for personal growth. Q: What makes you happy? A: My child’s laughter and smile. Surprise hugs and kisses from her also thrill me. Q: How do you relax and rejuvenate yourself? A: Hmm. This is where I need to work on the balance issue. Q:What is something people don’t know about you? A: I am a musician. I sing and at Miss America I performed the Frank Sinatra song - That’s Life. Most people don’t know that I chose that song because I wanted people with personal challenges to know they could “pick themselves up and get back in the race!” Q: What message would you like to give to women? A: Challenges or obstacles make us stronger and wiser. Passionate living is the key to happiness. I eat, work, and breathe diabetes because my passion is to see people living with diabetes realize success and not give in to limited lives because of the condition.

Great Explorations Showcases Peace Murals The Great Explorations Children’s Museum is hosting the Kids’ Guernica Peace Mural Project at the museum at 1925 4th St. N. in downtown St. Petersburg. For more than 15 years, artists, teachers, community activists and children from around the world have collaborated to build a visual construction of world peace through the creation of community murals. Each mural is specific to the region where it was created, with the entire collection spanning hundreds of murals from more than 40 different countries. The event was inspired by the original Picasso painting “Guernica, a reflection of the artist’s disapproval of the brutality of war during the Spanish civil war of 1937. At this year’s event, six murals will be on display at the Bay area children’s museum including The Chicago Mural; People of the World; Peace through Abstraction from Athens, Greece; The Japanese Mural with Cherry Blossoms; and three others, from Baltimore/Nepal, France and Australia. Throughout the mural development process, participating artists ages 6-22 were asked a series of questions to spark creative expression on the canvas including: Why are borders important; what would happen to the world if countries had no borders; and what happens to borders when there is a war? Prior to building the murals, artists sketched out their visions in journals and came together as teams to complete 12x24 feet painted murals. Hannah Dahm, art program specialist at Great Explorations and Americorps service member, was a key factor behind this year’s exhibit and a related workshop for local children to develop a mural at the St. Pete museum. The St. Petersburg Peace Mural was created and overseen by Dahm during a workshop at the museum held March 26-28. She previously had participated in a similar workshop while interning at Florida State University, which involved 14 schools and about 2000 students. “Great Explorations is a natural place to have the kid-based Peace Mural Project. I was so touched when I helped with the program in Tallahassee, and wanted to bring that experience to the youth of Pinellas, she says. While overseeing the project, Dahm worked closely with participating children as they developed their ideas of peace and converted them into images and guiding the children to work cooperatively as a team. Shelly Lee, program director, applauds Dahm for her work. “Hannah brings diversity to the program and the gift of unbridled talent. It was an amazing workshop for the entire community. The Kids’ Guernica Peace Mural Project will be on display at the museum through April 26. For information about the international event, go to www.kids-guernica.org. Visit the museum online at www.greatexplorations.org for hours and ticket information.

PCHG Designated a Free Disney Day Volunteer Site Premier Community HealthCare Group Inc. has been selected as a participating nonprofit for Disney’s “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day volunteer promotion. With this designation, the Dade City-based organization serves as a site for volunteers to donate their time and earn free admission to a Disney theme park. This follows Disney’s partnership with the Points of Light Institute and its HandsOn Network, the largest volunteer network in the nation, to encourage volunteerism with community nonprofits by donating Disney awards in the form of general admission at one of the Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme parks following the completion of a day of volunteer service. Volunteers with PCHG that wish to participate in the “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day rewards program can go to www.disneyparks.com to designate their nonprofit organization. The Disney promotion is slated to offer one million free tickets to volunteers who must be age 16 or older to participate. There are several volunteer opportunities available at PCHG, including mural painting and decorating in pediatric rooms, landscaping, painting, pressure washing and coordinating storybook readings in waiting rooms. PCHG offers a variety of health care services in the Pasco area at its two Dade City locations and health centers in Zephyrhills and New Port Richey.
