Spring is here or as we parents know it, countdown to summer. Soon the kids will be out of school, with summer camps in full swing and trips to grandma and grandpa’s house in the works. So April is your chance to get energized. i had the pleasure of spending spring break in new york with my sweet kids, Clara, Lindsay and Harris. It’s amazing how time flies and I can’t tell you how much i’m enjoying them as adults. i love hearing their opinions on the world, what they’re passionate about and watching them fulfill Me and my girls (Cla ra and Lindsay) in New York City their goals and become successful adults. Harris is during their colleg e spring break. getting called to audition for Broadway shows and international tours and he has yet to even perform his senior showcase in new york, where the very best agents come to scout talent. All my kids are pursuing their dreams and doing what they’re passionate about, something i’ve always encouraged and i couldn’t be more proud. Pursuing your passion isn’t just for the kids. This month’s Extraordinary Woman Andrea Graham knows a thing or two about passion. For years, she has been an enormous supporter of the arts and serves as the board president of Stageworks Theatre. The enthusiasm that she displays for the arts and enriching the lives of others through performance is being realized in Tampa with the opening of the new Stageworks Theatre in the Channel District. Get to know Andrea on page 50. Come see me at 11 a.m. April 6 at Carrabba’s in Clearwater for the Working Women of Tampa Bay luncheon and learn how to do what you love. i’ll speak about how i’ve taken what i love to do, being a kid campaigner or a kid whisperer and a parenting coach, and made it my life’s work. i’ve lived this way for so long, i can’t imagine not doing something i love. Moms and dads, you deserve this and so do your kids. This spring i encourage you to tap into your passions. Visit me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/parentingwithangela or www.facebook.com/TampaBayParentingMagazine and tell me what your passion is and how you’re fulfilling that need in your life. i can’t wait to hear from you and hope you have a fantastic April.

airport. As we drove on empty Miami streets, thoughts of what was to come filled my head. Who am i going to live with? What was the food like in the dining hall? Am i going to be homesick? i arrived at camp as a cool new york summer evening was settling in. Boy was i glad that i packed sweaters. As we unloaded from a threehour bus ride we received our bunk assignments and were sent on our way. i followed the map to bunk B9B and i silently prayed, “Please let me have a good summer!” Before camp, i was most intimidated by sharing a cabin and three showers with 10 other campers and three counselors who knew nothing about me. As i walked in, I was immediately surprised to find a relatively clean center room with bright red, wooden bunk beds that lined the perimeter of the space. The first counselor I met greeted me with a bright Australian twang, “G’day mate. Take any empty bed you like.” i immediately grabbed the first bottom bunk I saw.

A

As summer approaches, tweens and teens may be yearning for a little more freedom. For me, sleep-away camp changed my life. i will never forget the experiences and the people i met.

Having spent several summers away at camp, i wholeheartedly recommend the experience. it really taught me a lot about myself and showed my parents i was a responsible young man.

idea of being away from home was exciting and terrifying. Fortunately, my parents talked me through my worries, encouraging me to go. i am glad they did.

Camp often is touted as a way for children to build responsibility, broaden their horizons, develop lifelong friendships and build selfesteem. i can attest to the fact that camp did all this for me and more.

it was a humid August morning and my alarm clock’s so-called chime pierced the air. The persistent buzz filled my dark room in efforts to awake me from a deep sleep but my eyes were already open in anticipation of my first trip on my own. Even though it was 4:30 in the morning, i sprang out of bed and dressed in record time. Dad helped me lug my 50-pound bags into the car and we zoomed off to the

The summer after my freshman year of high school i got to spend a few weeks at a program in new york. As a 14-year-old, the

As i began to unpack, more bunkmates and counselors trickled into the cabin. The anxiety of meeting new campers took a back seat to the excitement of settling in. All of the old timers understood the pressure of being away from home for the first time and made sure to extend a big welcome. Three of my bunkmates who had arrived a little earlier in the day were from Spain and spoke little English. i found myself becoming an impromptu translator, being fluent in both English and Spanish. it was so thrilling to know that there were other kids who had the same interests as me. i knew that sleep away camp was for me. My first full day was a little overwhelming. As opposed to spending all day with my bunkmates doing different activities, each camper could choose six activities daily. We chose our activities for the day during breakfast. Options included everything from water skiing to piano lessons to woodworking to drama. Selecting different activities every day was great because it helped me meet more campers and staff members. continued on the next page

The program i attended and the majority of sleep-away camps have strict rules about calling home. At my camp, we were not allowed to call home the first week. We were encouraged to write letters or send e-mails. At the time, the rule didn’t make much sense to me but i now understand. First-time campers typically will experience a day or two of homesickness, as i did. Settling into a new environment with new people can be daunting. My counselors helped me to focus on my new friends and activities and within a day or so i was more preoccupied with how many days i had left at camp and whether i would be returning the next year. However, it’s best that parents talk about homesickness with campers before they leave home. My parents explained to me that nothing would change while i was away and that they were just an e-mail away. As my camp days drew to a close, i began to think about how i would stay in touch with the amazing people i had met. i must have swapped e-mails and phone numbers with hundreds of campers and counselors from around the world. There are many with who i’m still in contact.

summer camp guide .....................................................................................................................................................

i

By Mark Heller an essenTial liFe lessOn ....................................................................................................................... .......................................................................... t’s one of the important, essential truths that students of all ages need to understand. The message is actually rather simple — at school and in life, civility matters. Manners make a difference.

However, with the increased focus on standardized testing and grades, i fear that schools’ vital job of creating and nurturing strong citizens is threatened. in 21st century America, civility is more rare than it should be. it certainly runs against the grain of the media-driven culture in which our children are immersed. School ought to be a counter-weight to that base culture. We should insist that schools be places where we learn and practice civility, where we treat each other well. Of course, our schools must be designed to prepare students for their next academic steps, for college and career, but i believe we have to do much more than that. Our real goal is to prepare students

for life. And we would serve them well by remembering that what we permit, we promote. One of the greatest thinkers in human history was Buddha, and the first of his noble Truths about life was that life is suffering. i think the more modern version is life is difficult. Growing up is difficult. yet, once we accept and understand that it is, we can begin to travel down the road of making it less and less difficult. The first step to solving any problem is acknowledging that there is a problem. So life is difficult. What is it that lifts us up out of the problem that life is difficult? it’s good relationships with other people. Good relationships make our lives good. Bad relationships make our lives bad. Life is what our relationships make it. Wow. Life is the search for good relationships. How do we make that happen? Since it’s hard to have relationships when we’re entirely alone, we have to learn how to live well with others. Thus, rules or ways of doing things that make us appeal to others are

very important. Manners accomplish that. They convey a common language, a road map that helps us both understand and come across well to others. When we make life easier or lessen the burdens of life for those around us, we are doing well. When our choices add to the inherent difficulty of the circles we travel in, we are not doing well. Civil behavior — simple politeness — allows us to connect successfully with others. Through civil choices we develop thoughtfulness and communication. Through civil choices, we build relationships. That’s the environment schools need to build. That’s what should be expected of all members of every school community, teachers, administrators, parents, and students alike. Examples include: if all members of school communities practiced and insisted on these simple, civil choices, it would go a long way toward improving education and our world. it

Civil choices make the quality of our lives better. They smooth the paths of everyone in the community. They lighten our burdens. They help us build relationships. They cause us to come together, to grow and to rise. They should be part of every student’s day each and every day. Travel guide

W

ill work for travel. That was a life truth for me through out the 90’s as i explored Europe and several islands in the Caribbean. Then, in 2003, Carmen came along. Three years later, Gage arrived. For my husband and me, it didn’t seem practical or even desirable to take off to exotic locales lugging two small children and enough gear to ratchet up the price of our plane tickets. These days a vacation is not so much about spending a week in a far away place as it is about getting to the destination with as little hassle as possible and targeting surroundings that cater to adults and children. When Carmen was small we scouted killer offseason deals at resorts that offered activities for children. One of our favorite memories is of a beautiful resort in the Mexican Riviera outside Cancun, where my husband Andy and i could engage in activities with Carmen but there was also a kid’s care center that allowed us to take advantage of some R&R for ourselves.

When Carmen was 2½ we tried out a cruise and while the food and accommodations were great the activities for children were really geared for those four and older, so much of the vacation was spent entertaining her. i learned that you need to find out exactly what children’s activities means before booking.

After Gage was born, we simplified our vacations even more. We discovered Treasure island and began taking off for long weekends at the beach. We made sure to choose a resort within walking distance of restaurants and a playground. We also turned Orlando into an annual four-day vacation destination rather than a day here or there at one of the theme parks. We go in the off-season, which gets you a two-room suite for a bargain and there are no long lines or heavy crowds. These short trips are easy on me as i pack up their clothes, favorite snacks and a few things to occupy them during the drive. i’ve discovered catering to their personalities works best when you’re on the road for more than an hour. Carmen is our artist and reader so a couple of new books, clean paper and crayons will occupy her. Gage avoids the art scene all together, so i may pick up a package of mini racecars or download fun preschool learning games onto my phone for him to explore. One trip i refused to give up was our annual spring skiing vacation. Getting there requires one or two planes and a car ride. For the past three years, we’ve taken Carmen alone while Gage, who recently turned 4, went to Grandma’s house. We simply felt it would not be fun for him or for us to drag him out to California or Colorado until he was past the toddler stage. Typically, we enroll Carmen in ski school for half a day. That gives Andy and i some adult time to explore the steeper slopes on the mountain and enjoy a long lunch at one of the mountainside

restaurants. Then, the rest of the afternoon is spent on the bunny slopes or sledding with her. i daydream of traveling to Rome with my husband, but until my babies are older, i relish the mini getaways and the fun memories we are creating.

Fa mily Traveling Pack a goodie bag of new loot for car or plane rides. Pack less and less. Your 10-year old does not need 18 blouses for a twoweek trip and neither do you. Bring a child friendly first aid kit. Dress your kids in bright colors, especially if visiting a musement parks. Childproof hotel rooms. Pack essentials, such as snacks, toys, blankets and wipes, in a carry-on bag when traveling by plane.

chool gardens date to 1811 or even further. But that’s no surprise considering you couldn’t just jump in your car and head to the nearest grocery story for fruits and vegetables.

However, in the Tampa Bay area, several schools are continuing the tradition of school gardens, including at Learning Gate Community School in Lutz and Robles Elementary in Tampa. The schools see the importance of the programs and are finding ways to incorporate them into their curriculum with the help of students, parents and businesses. Learning Gate is a charter school whose mission is to prepare students to participate in their family, school and community, through an educational program that promotes academic excellence, community service and environmental responsibility. Michele northrup, who is in charge of the public relations and among the parents who worked to created the garden in 2006, is proud of the program. “i love seeing the pride on the faces of our students as they work in the garden, she says. “We collect our harvest for our local food

bank and our students feel empowered by helping others.” The majority of the vegetables are harvested and donated to Feeding America Tampa Bay. Depending on grade level, each student can spend up to two hours per week in the garden taking care of the plants or perhaps tending to the chickens and bunny that are on the campus. Robles was lacking funds not enthusiasm and support of youth garden, recently winning the 2011 Burpee Home Gardens’ i Can Grow youth Garden Award. Selected from more that 220 community and urban schools, its support of youth gardening and development of an indepth plan for comprehensive youth-centered educational programs that emphasize nutrition and food production, environmental awareness, social responsibility and scholastic integration was a deciding factor. The school will receive up to 500 vegetable and herb plants, $2,500 toward garden supplies, allowing the school to build 10 raised beds, rain barrels and benches, five gallons of organic-based plant food, one hose-end sprayer, on-site layout and installation assistance from Burpee Home Gardens experts and a camera to document the garden’s success. “For years, the teachers at Robles Elementary

School have been passionate about gardening and developing an outdoor learning environment for our students,” says Christine Danger, science resource teacher. “Our outdoor learning environment began with the donation of a cement slab, two picnic tables and an elm tree, and receiving this award will not only allow us to begin a much-anticipated garden, but also bring powerful hands-on learning, wonder and joy to our students and staff.” “We received an overwhelming number of quality applications from across the nation for the second annual I Can Grow program, and it was difficult to select the winners,” said George Ball, chairman and CEO. “The growing popularity of the program demonstrates the increasing value and interest in home vegetable gardening among younger and novice gardeners.” Discovering food growing on a plant before it reaches grocery store shelves is a new experience for many students at Robles. For the 630 students in this urban, high-poverty school, gardening will assist in making the connection between life sciences taught in the classroom and the foods consumed daily. Working with the Southwest Florida Water Management District, Robles will use its garden as a tool for teaching students about the water cycle, water conservation, landscaping and rain barrels. The Burpee Home Gardens’ i Can Grow program launched in 2010. The company is the largest garden company in north America, offering seeds, garden plants and gardening supplies at www.burpee.com.

There are hundred’s of community and national grants available for school gardens. Do your research and your child’s school could be the next to reap the vast benefits of connecting with nature, knowing where our food comes from and the value of growing your own dinner. in the end, the founder of the children’s school farm at DeWitt Clinton Park in new york may have summed up the value of school gardens best. “i did not start a garden to grow a few vegetables and flowers. The garden was used as a means to teach them in their work some necessary civic virtues, private care of public property, economy, honesty, application, concentration, self-government, civic pride, justice, the dignity of labor and the love of nature.”

here are many misconceptions and falsehoods regarding autism. Unless confronted with the disease, through your child’s diagnosis, a family member’s or a friend’s, many of us fail to take the time to learn the facts on this disorder. in the battle against this disorder, it’s important that the myths be laid to rest. Autism is a pervasive development disorder, which causes developmental problems in multiple areas. There are four disorders under the category of PDD; Asperger’s, child disintegrative disorder, Rett’s disorder and PDD, not otherwise specified. Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that typically appears within the first three years of a child’s life. Children with autism display specific developmental deficits, particularly in language and social skills.

Common Myths People with autism do not want friends. Children with autism are not able to show imagination. Autistic children are unable to build relationships. People with autism do not notice others and do not pick up cues from peers/adults. Repetitive or ritualistic behavior should be stopped.

Autism can be cured. Autistic child can be a dangerto society. Children with autism cannot learn. Autism is a mental disorder. Autism is a result of cold and unemotional parenting. There is an autism epidemic. Individuals with autism always have hidden or exceptional talents. Source: Life Focus Group

When evaluating a child who may have autism, the main sign to look for is severely impaired social development. Autistic children typically do not seek or develop relationships, preferring to remain in their own private world. They lack interest in everyday activities and avoid eye contact and touching. inappropriate, repetitive or aggressive behaviors can be particularly difficult for parents to deal with because others can misconstrue this as the child needing discipline. These behaviors also can be labeled as strange or frightening and can include hand flapping, rocking, head banging and other forms of self-injury. Another significant feature is the language limitation. Autistic children rarely engage in social conversation but may repeat syllables endlessly, scream or repeat only what has been said to them. Sufferers also can have difficulty adapting to their environment as well, sometimes having unusual sensitivity or reactions to physical sensations such as temperature or smell. Children with milder forms can learn to function in society, though the disorder cannot be cured.

Tips for Parents

The first things parents need to know is that their child’s disability is not their fault. There is no continued on the next page

Mindful Rehabilitation Coaching You on Living Your Best Life Let me help you determine: • what you want • what you are willing to do to get it • what it takes to keep your goals on track

Parenting an autistic child is difficult. In addition to what all parents go through, autistic children often demand more supervision and more time. Parents also must deal with the disappointment and sadness that can come with diagnosis, not to mention the emotions of friends and family. With all of this, parents can feel guilty about taking time for them. Don’t. you need to take care of yourself in order to care for your child. Try to make time for yourself on a regular basis, such as a night out with friends or just a little to relax and meditate. Parents of autistic children also need to network with other families in similar situations. They can help support you, providing tools and ideas that will help your child.

Treatments

There are many methods of treatment for the autistic child. Variations on behavior therapy have proved most effective in treating the behaviors that define autism. Medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics and psych stimulants, can sometimes help alleviate behavioral abnormalities and improve social responsiveness. Treatment also may include animal or music and art therapy as well as physical or sensory stimulation. Other treatment approaches include applied behavioral analysis, which aims to reward adaptive and pro-social behaviors; discrete trial training, where every task given to the child consists of a request to perform a specific action, a response from the child and a reaction from therapist; and picture exchange communication systems, which help autistic children communicate by exchanging a picture for an item or activity that they want. Autism, like many disorders, isn’t exactly as it appears in movies or on TV. A child with a diagnosis of autism likely will always see the world a bit differently than a child without the disorder. However, it’s important to know the facts, so that parents, doctors and researchers can focus on helping the children and finding a cure.

I offer face to face and telephone coaching services for individuals, couples and businesses. If you’re looking for extra support and guidance or you’re just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

Extraordinary woman

.........................................

By AngelA Ardolino

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.

A native new yorker, Andrea Graham knew early on that she wanted to be part of the theater. “Shirley Temple was my idol,” she says. “i wanted to sing and dance and entertain.” She even chose her college based on who had the best theatre department, Smith College in Massachusetts. She later became interested in economic development, graduating with a degree in economics and a minor in theater. She later earned an MBA from The Wharton School of Business, but the theater remained in her blood. While at Wharton, Graham helped organize the first Wharton Follies, a tradition that has continued. in 1980, she came to Tampa and, while she amusingly learned that you can’t hail a cab on Florida Avenue, she has made the adjustment, carving her own path. She was the first employee of the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, now the Straz Center, helping build the arts center into a city institution. Graham also has worked with the Hospice of Hillsborough, now LifePath, as well as with the Tampa Jewish Federation. Today, she’s the president of Stageworks Theatre, the oldest professional theater company in Tampa. The company is planning to open a new theater at Grand Central at Kennedy in the Channel District in July. Stageworks’ mission aligns with how Graham sees the world — embrace diversity and teach tolerance. Stageworks aims to produce shows that entertain and open minds. On the homefront, she’s been married to Geoff Simon for nearly 25 years, raising two children, Spencer, 19, a business student at USF and Hannah, 13, a student at Coleman Middle.

What do you think is the secret to your family’s success?

Running a family is like producing a play. Everybody thinks they are smarter than the director and everyone wants to play a lead. The key to a successful show is to respect the talent that each person brings to the production. A play is more compelling if the characters are diverse and different; it gives the play depth and variation. So too in our family – we are a wild cast of characters. Only the family could have brought us together.

What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear is that life moves so quickly and

that someday i may stop and realize i forgot something important. Life seems to consume us. i truly believe that “Life is a Cabaret” and if you don’t take advantage of every opportunity it is your loss. i also believe that in today’s fast-paced, cyberworld it is easy miss the essence of life.

What advice would you give to other women?

My advice would be to know the rules, but be ready to break every one of them.

What is your proudest moment?

My proudest moments were being chosen by the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce as the Cultural Contributor of the year and being selected as Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services’ Celebrity Couple of the year for our work in the AiDS community.

What is your biggest achievement?

i do not think of myself as having a “biggest achievement.” i see life as a progression of many achievements, all of which inspire you and lead you to your next achievement. it’s like Climb Every Mountain, a song from the Sound of Music. There is always a mountain in front of you and you climb it till you find your dream. So, I am in my climbing mode. Along the way i have had many magical moments, including marrying Geoff Simon and being lucky enough to be the parents of Spencer and Hannah. Also, being inducted into the national Women’s Hall of Fame for work in AiDS awareness and being handed the award by Martina navratilova and standing on Morsani stage at the performing arts center and welcoming everyone to the first performance.

What makes you happy?

Watching the 25th anniversary celebration of Les Miserables on WEDU and hearing the mesmerizing song Bring Him Home. Seeing children at the theater. Watching my daughter get her round-off back-handspring tuck for the first time. Dancing with Geoff to our favorite sixties songs and really letting loose. Watching our children become a Bar and Bat Mitzvah and not saying, “no whip cream!”

How do you relax and take time for yourself?

My favorite relaxation is a rigorous workout. i put in my ear plugs, turn on my Michael Jackson, get my body moving and away i go. i also love to lose myself listening to a Broadway show, my

all times favorites being Man of La Mancha, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Sweeney Todd.

What else would you like to share with our readers? About being a mom, about your work?

Stageworks just closed a show called The MOMologues, which we ran in ybor City for two weeks. it was all about how overwhelming, difficult, exhausting, confusing, terrifying yet wonderful, fulfilling, loving, satisfying and rewarding being a mother is. We advertised it as “the toughest job you’ll ever love!” And that is how i feel about being a mother. The closing line of the show really sums it up for me: “This is, by far, the most important thing i have ever done.”

How do you enjoy or draw information from the magazine?

i love this magazine. i have gotten much helpful information about parenting from the articles and i love looking at the advertisements. i have found several of my kids’ summer camps through the magazine as well as other kid-friendly events going on in the community.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids in the Tampa Bay area?

My favorite thing to do with my kids is to take them to one of the many performing arts venues and opening their eyes to the world of creativity. For Spencer’s graduation from Plant High, we gave him a subscription to The Florida Orchestra. He has surprised all of us by really enjoying the concerts and he wants to renew for next year.

What is your biggest inspiration or most significant role model?

My biggest inspiration is waking up every morning, turning off the alarm, stretching a delicious, firststretch-of-the-morning stretch, pulling my eyes open, seeing the sunshine and then realizing there is a world of possibility just outside the room waiting to be discovered. Golda Meir said, “Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.” When I look in our Tampa Bay community, i see many tiny sparks of possibility that have been transformed into flames of achievement.

Foundation Plans Haven for Young Cancer Patients The 1Voice Foundation, a nonprofit charity dedicated to supporting children with cancer and their families, is working with the Hillsborough County School District to launch 1Voice Academy, the first school in the United States for children with cancer. The foundation kicked off its $5 million capital funding campaign with an open house last month at the Home Theater Gallery, one of the sites being considered for the school. Kayla Witter, 10, and friend Joshua Inglese, 9, enjoy Kayla’s “No More Chemo” celebration.

“Children on treatment who miss school fall behind academically and resent their disease and the alienation it causes even more,” says Mary Ann Massolio, executive director of 1Voice Foundation, who lost a son to cancer. “Plus, many parents have to miss work to stay home with them. This can lead to financial devastation and add to the 80-percent divorce rate that parents of chronically ill children face. The 1Voice Academy will provide children with a safe learning environment while their immune systems are compromised, such as in the 7 to 10 days following chemotherapy.” “I always have to be vigilant about whether there is a flu or strep going around school,” says Natalie Willis, whose daughter, Mandy, was diagnosed with cancer when she was 7. “Mandy had to miss a lot of days even though she felt well, but she couldn’t risk coming into contact with a sick child. The truth is some parents send their kids to school even with a low fever or other signs of infection.” in addition to offering classes, the 1Voice Academy will offer after-school programs for tutoring, art and music, and provide support groups and programs for parents and siblings. The 1Voice Foundation began in 2008 when six members of the Tampa Bay community realized organizations focused on research and organizations focused on assisting families were competing for dollars instead of working together. in addition to researching cures for cancer, the foundation provides resources and support groups for patients and their families, outings for children with cancer, scholarships and funeral assistance. The nonprofit organization does not receive any state or federal funding and is dependent on corporate and private donations. For more information, visit www.1voicefoundation.org or call Mary Ann Massolio at 813-787-3042.

Fleming Fine Arts Camp Celebrates 25 Years With deep roots in Tampa and an extensive roster of instructors, Fleming Fine Arts Camp is celebrating 25 years of educating bay area children on the importance of creativity and culture. Based at Berkeley Preparatory School, many graduates of the arts education camp have gone on to pursue professional careers in the arts and committed supporters of arts programs in their communities. Enrollment is open for this year’s summer camp, serving newborns to 13-year-olds from June 6 through July 29 at the school, 4811 Kelly Road. “Starting at age zero, our campers learn to explore their creativity and imagination,” says Larkie Fleming, founder and director. “Even if they don’t become professional artists themselves, children learn to appreciate culture and go on to support their local arts community because they were exposed to the arts at an early age.” Fleming, a pianist, composer and fine arts instructor, is a registered music therapist and has designed fine arts programs in the bay area for more than 30 years. The camp boasts a small-group learning environment. The KinderArts music and visual arts program teaches toddlers up to age 4 concepts such as logic, mathematics and social development through music, movement and art activities. Fleming also offers Kindermusik’s Village Camp program, a bonding experience for parents and babies up to 17 months. Both one- and two-week camp options are available. Children do not have to attend Berkeley to enroll. During the program, students will get an opportunity to produce original works of art, including plays scripted, acted and directed by students and be exposed to numerous forms of artistic expression, including creative movement, hip hop, painting, drawing, pottery, keyboard instruction, drums, guitar, singing, computer animation, movie-making and improvisation. The program also includes visits to museums, where students learn to work in the style of artists they observe. Teens in grades 9-12 may enroll in the counselor-in-training program and earn required community service hours by assisting in art and drama classes and performing at local community venues. Camp sessions cost $95-$445, with discounts available when paid by April. 15. For information, visit www.berkeleyprep.org/summer or call 813-885-1673.

Local Scouts Collect Food for Area’s Needy Members of the Troop 22 Boy Scouts and Pack 22 Cub Scouts recently went “Scouting for Food” during its annual community service project to gather nonperishable foods from residents of Davis islands and Hyde Park.

Troop 22 members Saral, left, and Sahaj Kumar and their mother Mudra, who helped organize the food drive, are with Pack 22 Cubmaster Bruce Yost and Den Leader Drew Hudgins.

The two groups partnered to reach the community with Troop 22 distributing bags and urging residents to participate and Pack 22 members collecting the bags left on doorsteps.

This year more than 65 scouts from Troop 22 and Pack 22 participated and their hard work and the generosity of their community resulted in the collection of 1,350 pounds of food, later delivered to Metropolitan Ministries for distribution to needy individuals and families in the bay area.

Palm Harbor Author Earns High Recognition The Excellence in Media Foundation recently named Tom McQueen’s Letters to Ethan: A Grandfather’s Legacy of Life and Love an Angel Award winner. The organization, which focuses on encouraging media to deliver positive, inspirational messages, created the awards to honor work of outstanding moral, ethical or social impact and as a means to raise awareness and motivate media companies to produce more child-friendly entertainment. Past recipients include Tom Hanks, John Tesh and Diane Sawyer.

McQueen’s book is a collection of letters to his son and grandson, passing along wisdom and lessons on life, love and friendship.

Released in november, Letters to Ethan was inspired by the Palm Harbor author’s childhood wish to know his paternal grandparents, who died before he was born. The book is a collection of letters written to his son and young grandson sharing lessons of love and friendship that McQueen says he never had the opportunity to learn from his grandparents.

“Letters to Ethan isn’t just a book,” says McQueen, president of the American Family Foundation and grandfather of two. “Along with my Legacy nation campaign, it’s the start of a movement that aims to truly engage parents and grandparents as the true teachers and mentors for their children and grandchildren, and it’s an honor to be among the many great entertainers who’ve won this award.” Launched in 2010, the Legacy nation campaign encourages parents and grandparents to share their wisdom through letters uploaded at www.thelegacynationusa.com. “We live in an era where technology has taken us away from relationships and family,” says McQueen. “My goal with Letters to Ethan and Legacy nation is to encourage people to return to spending time with their families and developing those relationships.” Visit www.letterstoethan.com to learn more about McQueen and the book.

Secrets of a Soccer Mom Revealed The Venue Ensemble Theatre presents “Secrets of a Soccer Mom” by Kathleen Clark through April 17. Mary Kay Cyrus will direct the comedy about life on and off the soccer field. “When i read Secrets of a Soccer Mom, i knew almost immediately that i wanted to direct it,” Cyrus says. “i enjoy directing small cast plays that show the strength and character of women. And i knew that i would have no problem casting this play, because there are so many talented actresses in the Tampa Bay area.” The play is part of the lineup for the Venue’s third full season at its location in the Hudson Furniture Plaza, 9125 U.S. 19 n. in Pinellas Park. The production stars Johanna Griese, Katie Mulford and Samantha Parisi as moms who take to the field in a soccer match versus their 8-year-old sons. Cyrus notes that this play is another example of the socially relevant content the ensemble aims to produce each season. Three mothers share the joys and frustrations of friendship, marriage and motherhood in Secrets of a Soccer Mom.

“Venue Ensemble strives to find plays that bring laughter to the audience while at the same time touching upon relevant social and personal issues. We also identify a benefit organization for each of our productions and attempt to work with another local nonprofit that in some way ties into the theme of the selected play,” she says. For Secrets, that organization is the Special Olympics of Pinellas County. The ensemble will donate a portion of the proceeds from every ticket sold to the organization. “Despite its title, the play primarily is about the women not the game of soccer. You definitely don’t have to be the mother of a budding soccer star to enjoy the show,” Cyrus says. “Ultimately, it’s about friendship, the joys and frustrations of marriage and motherhood and being true to the person you once saw yourself as becoming.” Tickets are $15, with 8 p.m. performances on Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. A special Thursday Preview performance is set for March 31, where you pay what you can for admission. To learn more about the theater or make a reservation, go to www.venueactorstudio.org or call 727-822-6194.
