The first full month of spring has arrived! With the nice weather, it’s a great time to start a garden. i planted a garden last year and have now started to see the fruits of my labor. it’s also given me a chance to learn about our food and where it comes from. On page 10, there’s information on the new pressures for food growers and suppliers to disclose what’s in our food. And on page 12, we talk about why it’s important to put good stuff in your grocery cart.

Me with Joan Lunden at the 2012 Girl Sco uts of West Central Florida Women of Distinction Lunche on.

Also this month, Linda Hurtado of ABC Action news talks infertility, offering some great information on alternative treatments and resources for couples struggling to conceive. Check it out on page 30. We’re still looking for Extraordinary Girls in Tampa Bay. if you know a young woman younger than 21, we want to hear about her. This month’s Extraordinary Girl Madison Cavanaugh has an inspiring story of survival and giving back on page 36. Our annual Summer Splash camp fair last month was a great success, thanks in no small part to the Straz Center, bay area summer camp providers, and you, our loyal readers. Thanks for coming out to learn about your summer camp options. Keep tuning in to ABC Action news at noon on Thursdays. We’ve only scratched the surface of parenting topics. Share your thoughts with me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TampaBayParentingMagazine and follow me on Twitter @angelaardolino. Enjoy Earth Day and have a great April!

rganic farmers and food producers, consumer and public health advocates and environmentalists are spearheading Just Label it, an effort to persuade the federal government to require that foods with genetically modified (GM) ingredients be labeled accordingly. Advocates believe consumers have a right to be able to make informed choices about which foods they put into their bodies and support with their pocketbooks.

Many Americans aren’t aware that an estimated 70 percent of processed foods at grocery stores contain GM ingredients. yet in polls, 93 percent of Americans support mandatory labeling of such foods. At present, the FDA doesn’t require labels for foods with GM ingredients. Just Label It organizers worry that genetically modified plants (and animals) could wreak havoc on human health and natural ecosystems, given how little we know about them and their ability to proliferate beyond our control. “What unifies many of us is the belief that it’s our right to know,” Just Label it organizers say. The idea for the campaign grew out of a 2011 meeting of organic stakeholders organized by Organic Voices, a project that documents the oral history of organic farming and sustainable agriculture. Among the chief concerns of labeling proponents is there has been no long-term safety testing on GM ingredients. Because they are so new, unexpected mutations can occur, introducing unknown toxins into the food supply. Also, the increasing use of herbicide-resistant genes in crops is leading to the overuse of herbicides in general, and the planting of GM crops that are programmed to generate their own pesticides means that more pesticides are in our farms and fields than ever before. Perhaps most worrisome is that, unlike chemical pollution or even nuclear contamination, so-called “genetic pollution” cannot be cleaned up after the fact. The first order of business for Just Label It organizers was a legal petition, written by lawyers at the nonprofit Center for Food Safety and submitted to the FDA in September 2011. it calls for the mandatory labeling of GM foods for sale in the U.S. The FDA is taking public comments on the petition and will issue a ruling later this year. Consumers can make their opinions known by customizing and submitting the letter available on the JustLabelit.org home page. To date, 600,000 people have sent comments to the FDA. Just Label it aims to get that number to 1 million by spring’s end, and is now working with 450 partner groups to spread the word. Organizers are hoping that this outpouring of support will resonate with FDA regulators when it comes time for them to decide whether or not the U.S. should join nearly 50 other nations, including South Korea, Brazil, China, and the European Union, in requiring GM labeling.

. Genetically modified organisms are those in which the DNA has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. The technology allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another and between non-related species. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), GMOs were initially developed to improve crop protection. However, these foods are not the traditional, natural fruits and vegetables that are known to be safe because humans have consumed them for thousands of years. The release of GMOs into the environment and the marketing of genetically modified foods have resulted in a public debate in many parts of the world. Of the health concerns about GMOs, their tendency to provoke allergic reaction, especially in children, tops the list. The WHO advocates rigorous testing for GMOs to determine safety. But while the world debates, what are parents to do? Stop buying food that includes these ingredients. if we stop consuming these products, major food producers will be forced to stop using GMOs. Period. The process isn’t easy, but it’s better than having to deal with the unknown effects of these foods. Here are some tips to help you keep GMOs out of your shopping cart. Certified organic food and produce must pass stringent requirements, including proving that no GMOs where used. Organic food is not cheap, but diverting money from the drive-thru to the organic isle can help cut your families intake of GMOs in half. The non-GMO Project is a nonprofit that is committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers and providing verified nonGMO choices. Look for their seal on products.

...................................

Avoid at-risk ingredients including soybeans, canola, cottonseed, corn and sugar from sugar beets. At least one of these ingredients is included in more than 65 percent of all genetically modified food. Case in point, genetically modified sugar beets make up 95 percent of the crop in the U.S.

t’s not easy for parents to keep meals and snacks healthy. With the busy lives we all lead, convenience foods and drive-thrus have become a way of life. “And now there is a new concern genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Buy from local organic markets or ask for local organic produce at the supermarket. you’ll get to shake hands with the person who grew your vegetables, and you won’t regret it.

it’s estimated that more than 70 percent of processed foods in U.S. supermarkets contain at least one genetically modified ingredient. As genetically modified foods take hold on farmland across the nation and in food supplies around the world, what does that mean for you and your family?

There certainly are foreseeable benefits to genetically modified foods including a world hunger solution and helping protect the earth by reducing reliance on chemical-based pesticides and herbicides. However, governments must ensure their safety through regulations and testing, and labeling must be implemented so that consumers have the choice of what to put into their bodies and their children’s.

successful adulthood. As such, it is counterproductive to let your child win every time you play games. instead, moderate your game-play so that the child has a chance to participate with winning being an attainable possibility. Then, let the chips fall where they may. This way, the day your child beats you at a favorite game will have much-enhanced meaning and impact on his long-term growth. PROMOTE PERSEvERANCE

A

s parents, we all want the very best for our children. We work hard to provide them with a future that’s better than our past. no parent wants to see their child experience pain or discomfort. So with the best of intentions, we frequently try to protect our children from the bumps and bruises that inevitably arise in life. Though this desire to shield our children is understandable, those bumps and bruises (and the pain they can cause) are actually positive contributors to each child’s eventual success. We are raising children in the age of instant gratification. Television programs provide quick solutions to all problems in a half-hour or hour-long time period. Video games deliver rapid responses and our communication tools provide nearly instantaneous, worldwide connectivity. So without meaning to, we are teaching our children that life is easy and painless. In reality, there is no “easy button.” Life is full of complexity and there are many detours and curves.

We believe that providing children with appropriately painful challenges and opportunities is critical to healthy development. Here are some of our thoughts on ways to build resilience and resolve in children. START yOuNG The gift of perseverance begins during infancy. infants must have endless opportunities to work and struggle. Tummy time, while often frustrating for babies, is essential for strong cognitive and physical development. As infants reach for toys, lift their heads and learn to turn over, they are developing essential skills needed for proper growth and development and learning the rewards of hard work. DON’T LET ThEM WIN (TOO FREQuENTLy) Children need to learn that playing well does not always result in winning. in fact, losing can teach a great, great deal. Children must experience both winning and losing to become equipped with the attitudes that will lead to

Persistence, determination and dedication are key to developing strong problem solving and critical thinking skills. This is an area in which video games can be valuable learning labs. Children will go back time and time again to get a better result or to reach the next level. The trick lies in getting them to understand that the same principles of “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” applies to life. Don’t be afraid to call their attention to this or even to participate in some of their games. Try saying, “you’ve had so much more practice than i have. i need to work hard to get to be as good as you are because you worked hard to get to be that good!” DISPLAy AN “I CAN” ATTITuDE Replace whining and complaining with a joyful spirit. As they grow, children will face roadblocks. Having a positive attitude yourself and being enthusiastic about facing challenges will encourage children to work through their hard times. DISCuSS AND MODEL hARD WORK Children must learn to become willing to go the extra mile when faced with difficult situations. They will if they see and hear you using hard work as a method of tackling the daily challenges we all face. Help them learn that failing to prepare is preparing continued on page 28 to fail. Help them understand that anything worth

having is worth working for by modeling and discussing that routinely. PROMOTE RECESS School recess can be challenging for children. That’s one of the reasons why it’s so important. Recess is a laboratory for social and emotional growth. it is a very valuable situation in which to teach that it is OK to walk away and come back later. Often, taking a break from a difficult or confusing task provides time to think and a clear picture of what needs to be accomplished. BuILD CONFIDENCE you must believe in yourself if you expect others to believe in you. Children need continual opportunities to build confidence and the best way to do that is to put them in situations where they can experience success and adversity. To best prepare children for life, we must be willing to let them work hard, make mistakes and struggle. Through these moments of challenge, children develop patterns and methods of problem-solving that will serve them well into adulthood. Since life will surely throw many challenges their way, children who can call upon an array of strategies to overcome difficulties will ultimately be those most likely to find success. Like a butterfly desperately struggling to free itself from within its chrysalis, if the butterfly receives unnatural help and doesn’t endure this difficult process on its own, it won’t be prepared for survival in its environment. As we guide our children through the various stages of development, it is imperative we provide opportunities for them to learn the importance of persistence, determination, diligence and dedication. it is only through skinned knees, difficult times and failures that they will truly have joy in life’s successes.

baby-making therapies

by linDA HurTADO

i

came to motherhood later in life. For much of my young adulthood, my career as a reporter and news anchor was a priority over marriage and babies. Still, i always knew that one day i wanted to experience motherhood and all its joys.

cOuples FinD Help FOr inFerTiliTy i was 35 when i married my husband Jorge and right away my focus became getting pregnant. i tried charting my body temperature and keeping track of my cycle, almost obsessively. i didn’t want the clock to stop on my chances to experience what others had told me was the ultimate life experience. i’m not alone. Many of my professional women friends also waited until later in life to try to conceive. They also found themselves racing against time, aging eggs and perhaps less fertile bodies. Many of my friends went through in vitro fertilization, a process by which egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside the body. The fertilized egg is then transferred to the patient’s uterus with the hope of establishing a successful pregnancy. Dr. Sandy Goodman of The Reproductive Medicine Group says that while success rates depend on a woman’s age, they can be up to 50 to 60 percent. Tracey and Russ Birch of Clearwater spent years trying to conceive and had received a diagnosis of unexplained infertility.

They went through a lot of testing, tried uterine insemination as well as in vitro. Tracey also had a surgical procedure that checked out everything and repaired her fallopian tubes. Throughout the process, Tracey says she felt many emotions including anger, depression, confusion and even doubt. “This was one of our basic functions in life and I couldn’t do it.” Finally, Tracey added complementary therapy to her treatment. Dr. Goodman recommends the Mind-Body Program to her patients suffering with infertility. Former TV anchor Kathy Fountain heads the program. She based it on 20 years of research that shows there is a definite connection between what you are thinking, your stress level and whether you are going to get pregnant. The Mind-Body classes consist of relaxation techniques, stress management and social support from other women who understand the negative thinking that happens when you are trying to conceive without success. “it was during that class that i did my iVF cycle and it was a complete bust,” Tracey says. “It was

the day of class i found out so i was able to go that evening and have support. i don’t know what I would have done without that.” The Birches went on to adopt twins, who are now 4½. “Shortly after we brought them home, we found out I was pregnant,” Tracey says. “They have a little sister who will be 4 in May!” My personal experience teaching this class for eight years is that almost all women who take it, within a year or two resolve their fertility issues ... some get pregnant, some not,” Fountain says. Dr. Goodman not only recommends patients get in tune with their mind and body, but also thinks acupuncture can help. “We continue to look for medical studies to prove things, but we do get a general feeling of things. if patients participate in acupuncture and the patient finds that to be a positive experience, we know that’s going to help them get through their iVF procedure,” Dr. Goodman says.

This month, ABC Action news will be taking action for your health. How to overcome infertility is one of the topics we will be focusing on during the 5 p.m. newscast. This seven-week health campaign will also cover heart health, breast cancer, prostate cancer and obesity. Look for in-depth reports on fertility treatments the week of April 23, including a closer look at male infertility. if you would like to learn more about the health campaign or feature reports, go to my Facebook page by looking for Linda Hurtado-WFTS under pages. As for Dr. Goodman, she says, “Being a mother, being parents, i don’t think there’s any experience in the world you can compare that to. i don’t think any parent would ever say that there’s anything more important in their lives.” As the mother of four girls, i could not agree more.

Extraordinary girl At just 7, Madison Cavanaugh has endured more than her youth belies. She battled cancer at age 4, enduring chemotherapy for two years. now cancer free, she says she is trying to “fit in everything I missed out on when I was sick.” She’s a Girl Scout, and takes dance lessons and plays softball. “i really enjoy being around other people.” While she still visits All Children’s Hospital every other month to “make sure I am OK,” Madison sees a bright future ahead. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her family, especially brothers Trevor and Liam and sister Paxton.

What makes you happy? i love being with my family and friends. Having

.......................................

by AngelA ArDOlinO

Sharing tales of leadership, community and hope.

What is your favorite thing to do with your family? i like to be outdoors. i enjoy camping, swimming and bike riding with my family. Game night is also a favorite of mine to do with my family.

What advice do you have for girls your age? My advice for girls my age would be to keep strong and confident in whatever you do. I am a cancer survivor. i had to learn to cope with some not so nice things being done to me, but i had to do it in order to live. Put yourself around positive, nice and helpful friends and you will stay a happy girl.

What are your aspirations for the future?

others makes me happy.

i would like to do many things. i would maybe like to work in a store where there is a cash register when i am in high school to make some money. Then i would like to be a nurse, doctor or a surgeon. i would like to help kids that have cancer so i would like to be something in the medical field.

Who is your biggest inspiration or role model?

What is your favorite way to relax?

the opportunity to play with my cousins in Canada also makes me happy. We went to Canada for Christmas this year and it was my first time ever seeing snow. I really like talking and visiting with people because being around

Vinny Lecavalier is a role model of mine. Even though he is a popular hockey player, he makes time to visit with kids who look up to him. i met him in the beginning of my cancer journey and i feel like he is a big brother looking out for me. He is very kind and i like to talk to him about his family.

i like to relax by reading a good book.

If you could change the world in one way, what would it be? i would make sure that no kid like me has to go through cancer. i would make the world cancer free.

What does Girl Scouts of America mean to you?

i’d have to say my mom is a big inspiration to me as well. She takes care of me. She was in charge of giving me many of my medicines when i was sick and she loves me very much. She sat by my bed when i was sick in the hospital. i want to be just like her when i grow up.

Girls Scouts of America means girls getting together, learning together and having fun together. i have been a Girl Scout since i was 5. i started as a Daisy. i am now a Brownie.

What is your favorite experience? My favorite experience would be encampment.

We go to Camp Wai Lani and do fun activities during the day. i really liked shooting the bow and arrow. We also did a dress up relay. i also got to sleep over in a cabin in the woods this year.

What message do you want to share with other girls and families? Girl scouting is a fun activity to be involved in. you get to experience a bit of everything. Learning about new things, trying new things and having fun while doing it.

Tell us about your community projects. My Girl Scout troop has done some fun community projects. We have helped out the church where we have our meetings by providing food for a program called pack a sack, which puts nutritious snacks in kids’ backpacks that don’t have access to good foods and for the kids that go to school hungry. We have helped clean up McGough nature Park by picking up garbage around the park as well as we just recently did a planting project to help put new trees and flowers in the ground. That was fun because we got to use rakes and shovels and dig in the dirt. At Christmastime, we also participated in a program called Operation Christmas Child, where we packed shoeboxes to send to kids in countries where they don’t have much of anything. i’m sure that put a smile on the kids’ faces. Personally, i have completed some community projects as well. i have spoken at different events for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. i have also shared my story with people who donate to Florida Blood Services. i had many blood transfusions when i was sick. i like to thank them for donating blood. Their donation helped keep me alive when i was battling cancer.

Meet Our Family Most in Need of an Adventure For the Krienes family, Tampa Bay Parenting’s latest contest for families couldn’t have come at a better time. Since their 9-year-old daughter Meghan’s epilepsy diagnosis, Kirsten and Erich Krienes have faced many challenges and fears that accompany the disease, which is not often talked about. “i saw the contest when i was on the Tampa Bay Parenting website and thought ‘we could really use some time away,” Kirsten says. “Then I saw that her story would be published, too, and thought that would be an excellent way to spread awareness.” Erich, Meghan and Kirsten prepare food with Jose Dominguez for Burko the Cuscus at Busch Garden’s Animal Care Center.

As the grand prize winners, the Spring Hill family earns four Busch Gardens/SeaWorld Fun Cards (valid at both parks through Dec. 31), $100 in SeaWorld or Busch Gardens money and an opportunity to write for the Busch Gardens blog site. Kirsten currently shares her family’s adventures in a personal blog, Gone Bananas (http://kirsty815.wordpress.com), which explores everything from Kirsten’s love of photography and Meghan’s after-school activities to frank conversation about epilepsy and attempts to dispel the myths. “When people think of seizures, they often think of convulsions in which a person may drop to the ground and shake uncontrollably, but what a lot of people don’t know is that not all seizures are drop seizures,” she writes in her initial letter to the magazine during which she shares the family’s journey with epilepsy. Go to http://tampabayparenting.com/4113/our-journey-with-meghan/ to read Kirsten’s letter. Meghan is in third grade, enjoys art and science and dreams of becoming a pediatrician one day. School hasn’t always been easy as epilepsy can present challenges, but the family hasn’t let epilepsy control their lives. “We manage to make sure that everything in the house is normal and don’t let epilepsy define her,” Kirsten says. Erich says he and his wife’s focus as parents is to be an ally for Meghan. “She’s the one that’s really going through it so you can’t let epilepsy affect how you conduct yourself every day. you have to be the stability in her life. You can’t fall apart when she needs you.” The family advocates for epilepsy families, supporting and blogging for the epilepsy-focused Talk About It! Foundation. “Epilepsy is the unspoken illness, but it affects about 3 million people in the U.S. and 50 million worldwide,” Kirsten notes. Visit Talk About it at www.talkaboutit.org to learn more about epilepsy.

Couple Teams to help Children here, Abroad Dino and Lisa Scanio are no strangers to helping others. Through their Florida O & P Outreach Team Foundation, launched in 2006 and recently awarded 501c(3) charity status, the Tampa couple has been giving back here and abroad. The FOOT Foundation, a longtime dream of Dino, a pediatric orthotist, and has one core mission, providing orthotic and prosthetic services to children and adults of impoverished countries. The foundation is also committed to giving back locally. in 2007, the Scanios purchased over $3,000 worth of pediatric speech therapy equipment and donated it to Shriner’s Hospital for Children. in 2010, they presented a check to Clinic of Angels, a local clinic providing care to Florida residents diagnosed with chronic medical conditions and who have no funding or insurance coverage for treatment. The couple’s latest endeavor, the Tampa niCU Project, is an effort they are personally passionate about given youngest son Gianluca’s experience of spending more than two months in the neonatal intensive Care Unit at Florida Hospital Women’s Center. This new project will include the purchase of baby swings, crib mobiles, rocking chairs and bouncy chairs that parents who spend many hours a day visiting a NICU unit may find make the stressful experience more tolerable. The FOOT Foundation has also extended support to families abroad. in 2007, the pair visited Guatemala City during which time the foundation’s outreach team treated more than 50 individuals, mostly children, in need of orthotic and prosthetic care. in many cases, children were carried in by family members but walked out on their own. “There is no greater joy than to see a child afflicted with spina bifida walk for the first time or a child who lost their arm to cancer feed themselves again,” says Dino. “These are simple tasks we take for granted in the United States because we are privileged with modern medicine.” The team returned to Guatemala in 2010 and helped an additional 50 people, and the team is planning its latest outreach effort to either Panama or Guatemala this September. Club’s Books for Troops Project Wins Facebook Contest

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club was the winner of a recent Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel’s Pay it Forward Facebook event. Each month, Precision Kia selects five local charities and encourages its Facebook fans to vote for the charity of their choice. The new Tampa group’s philanthropic project Book for Troops received the most votes, earning a $1,000 donation toward the effort from the car dealership. “I’m doing my happy dance,” says Patricia Murphy, project chairwoman of Books for Troops. “The other charities we were competing against are amazing, too. i’m just so grateful for all the support from our Facebook fans.” The Books for Troops project began last October with a goal of collecting 1,000 books to ship to deployed troops. As of March, the project had collected more than 6,300 paperback books for troops. “The new Tampa Junior Woman’s Club budgeted $1,000 to cover the shipping costs for the project. Together with an in-kind donation of postage from a local business we have packed and shipped 5,000 books. This donation from Wesley Chapel Kia will allow us to ship an additional 2,500 books to our troops overseas,” Murphy says. She notes that the campaign’s success has led the group to continue collecting books yearround. For more information or to make a donation toward postage for books, visit www. gfwcnewtampajuniors.org and click “Donate” at the bottom of the page.

Each year, the WEDU Be More Awards recognize nonprofit organizations across 12 categories. Go to www.wedu.org/bemore for a full list of award winners.
