Bicycle Safety Bicycling is a great way for children to stay active outside, but it’s important to remember that bicycles also pose potential risks. St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital recommends these bike safety tips: • Conduct an ABC bike check: air, brakes and chain. • Wear a properly fitted and secured helmet during every ride.

W
ith summer vacation right around the corner, moms across the Tampa Bay area will be logging more miles on their odometers than a cross-country vacation. So if you’re going to spend all that time in the car, might as well get in some fun and relaxation. And lucky for you, you’re a resident of the Sunshine State, where fun and adventure is always just a hop and a skip away. Whether you head east, north or south from the bay area, the Sunshine State has much to offer when planning a quick getaway.
Just Head North Situated 80 miles north of Tampa, the Plantation on Crystal River is a hidden gem unlike any other. Tucked away by the natural springs of King’s Bay and pristine lakes, rivers, wildlife refuges and state parks, this irresistibly charming resort has remained a popular escape for bay area families for more than 50 years. Having recently completed a $3 million rejuvenation to its guestrooms, common areas and lobby, the 196-room resort offers all the
comfort of a luxury hotel with the quaint and sophisticated atmosphere of old Florida. in addition to the spacious accommodations, which overlook the garden or King’s Bay, there are eight junior suites and 12 villas, which boast a large seating area, two bathrooms and living and dining areas. Nestled in 25,000 acres of Florida’s most well-kept land, this family-friendly resort has dedicated itself to energy, water and solid waste conservation as well as preserving the natural beauty of Florida’s coast. With this in mind, the Plantation on Crystal River offers visitors an endless number of outdoor activities to take in the surrounding beauty. From boating to diving to playing golf to scalloping, your family will spend endless hours exploring what lies at the heart of this classic plantation. TBP Tip: Scalloping season is July 1 to Sept. 24. Since scallop fishing requires a special permit, consider booking a group tour or charter if interested in this activity. One activity that you’ll have to put on your todo list is the resort’s world famous manatee tours. Crystal River is the only place in the world where divers can interact with the West indian Manatee. The Plantation Dive Shop offers an opportunity
Swimming with the manatees at Plantation on Crystal River.
to swim alongside the gentle creatures as they eat, play and socialize. The manatees gather in the constant 72-degree waters of the Crystal River and King’s Bay. For those opting to stay dry, guided tours offer views of the manatees by boat or kayak. TBP Tip: if you’re hoping to see manatees, you’ll need to plan your vacation during the cooler months. They can generally be seen from October through March, depending on the weather. After spending all that time outdoors, you’ll probably need a meal and some downtime. The Plantation boasts three restaurants, including The West 82 Degrees Grill, where you can enjoy crab soup, shrimp and grits and more. The lounge includes a grab-and-go coffee bar and full bar, as well as a seating area where you can relax and catch a Bucs game (if there’s no blackout). if you prefer other types of relaxation, the Aveda Spa offers the customary treatments and services – facials, massage therapy, manicures, pedicures and hairstyling – as well as a Vichy shower for extra relaxation following body treatments. No matter how you want to spend your vacation, The Plantation on Crystal River will help you and yours unwind. Visit www.plantationoncrystalriver.

“As i was running out to the parking lot, i was on the radio asking for an ambulance to be sent to our location,” Hill says. With little Anthony in the lead, they reached Cross in seconds. Slumped over and still inside his truck, he was blue. “We immediately placed him on the ground and i began to give Pete mouth to mouth,” Cayce recounts. “i actually performed the chest compressions as Trooper Cayce administered the breaths to Mr. Cross,” Hill adds. For eight minutes, the horrifying scene played out in the parking lot. Anthony’s Poppa flat-lined, was revived and then a screaming ambulance took him away.
A
t 4 feet tall, 6-year-old Anthony Temples was the “little guy” in his group but in an instant he became the hero!
it happened on a Saturday night in Lakeland during a family reunion. They had just finished dinner at the Cracker Barrel when his poppa collapsed in the parking lot. Pete Cross, 71, was having a massive heart attack. While the adults in the group – 30 in all – ran over to Cross, Anthony ran in the opposite direction! The first grader darted past cars, burst into the restaurant and bolted over to two strangers having dinner. His instincts told him that they would know what to do! He was right. The strangers were Florida Highway Patrol Troopers Cynthia Cayce and Teresa Hill. They had walked in to the Cracker Barrel a few minutes earlier. Anthony was the only one who noticed. During his live television interview on ABC Action News’ Positively Tampa Bay segment, he recounted what happened. Anthony: “i runned in there and told them my Poppa is havin’ a heart attack!”
“While performing CPR, we had a lot of his family and friends standing there watching us,” Hill says. “Afterward, it was a very emotional moment. We followed the ambulance to the hospital and stayed until we were informed he was stable.” Hill described that moment as one of the most worthwhile of her career. “i look at my job as a trooper a little differently now.” “They followed us to the hospital and stayed until the doctors told them i was going to make it,” says Cross, still brimming with emotions. “i see state troopers a lot and now i thank them each time for their knowledge and quick reactions.” Asked about his grandson, Cross is unabashedly proud. The little boy he took care of daily from birth is a hero – his hero. “For two years it was me and Anthony every day. i fed him, changed his diapers and took him to the doctor or anywhere he needed to go. … i bought a new truck just so he did not have to ride backwards in the front seat,” Cross says. “We have a bond that i feel will never be broken and maybe that’s why he was so determined to find me help.” Cross spent six days in the intensive care unit at Lakeland Regional Medical Center and months completing physical therapy. Five months later, he has lost 90 pounds through diet and exercise!
Anthony: “Um, they looked at me funny.”
Every 36 seconds someone in this country dies from heart disease. That’s nearly half a million killer heart attacks per year. Cross was well on his way to becoming a statistic. His grandson and Troopers Cynthia Cayce and Teresa Hill stopped that from happening.
Trooper Cayce remembers it differently. There was nothing funny about it. “I thought for a child to approach two uniformed officers and ask for help like that something must be terribly wrong!”
it’s no surprise the pint-size hero wants to be a state trooper when he grows up and that Cayce and Hill are nominated for Florida’s statewide Trooper of the year award!
The chain of life had begun. Within seconds, Cross’ heart attack was under attack by the troopers.
Lissette Campos is host of ABC Action News’ Positively Tampa Bay. All month long, tune in to Positively Tampa Bay’s health focus every Tuesday!
Campos: “What happened next? What did they say?!”

DADs wHO BrAve iT All AnD sTAy AT HOMe “i feel for you,” said the elderly employee at Kinko’s as he held the door for me so i could manage carrying my son, a diaper bag and my briefcase. “My wife passed away shortly after our baby was born and i had to raise him on my own.” Huh, I thought, unsure of why he was confiding such a personal fact to me. “When did your wife pass?” he asked. “My wife is not dead,” i replied, even more confused. “Oh,” he said. “Well, i still know how tough it is to be a single father. Seems to happen more now — women leaving the men and not taking the kids.” i had not yet caught on to why we were having the conversation, so i replied, “Single? No. We’re still together.” He opened his mouth to reply but nothing came out. it was his turn to be confused — very confused. But while he said nothing, his eyes told me everything. He was staring at my briefcase. i have visited that Kinko’s at least once, sometimes twice, a week for the past few years. The elderly employee almost always seems to be there during my visits so he knows i have a job. That is why he was so confused. Every time he has seen me since my youngest son was born, i have had him in tow. if i have a wife and a job, why am i always with my son, he obviously wondered? Why? Because Norman Rockwell is dead. That stereotypical family of a father who works 9 to 5 while the mother stays home and raises the kids is as outdated as phone booths, cassette tapes and dinners out without two tons of electronics in tow. in some families both parents work while a grandparent raises the children. Other families hire a nanny to rear their kids. And in families like mine, the mother brings home the bacon and the father cooks it. OK, my wife cooks it too, but i do stay home with the youngest.
......................... By pAul guzzO
My wife owns The Buzz Coffeehouse on Harbour island. i am a freelance writer. So when our youngest was born, the decision of was easy. who would stay home To be honest, it was hard on my ego early on. And apparently, i am not alone. “i get a lot of looks, especially throughout day when grocery shopping and running other errands,” says Jeremy Garret, a stay-at-home father of three. Garret’s situation is similar to mine. He is pastor of Peninsular Christian Church and a night waiter at The Colonnade Restaurant while his wife is a magnet school teacher. Their schedule dictated that he should stay at home. “People seem to think there is something wrong with my family. The wife is supposed to be home and the think. husband at work they And, yeah, it bothered me at first.” My wife has had to constantly defend work and me. When men would see her at learn i was home, they would ask her, “Why are you with him?” as though i am not worthy. Some try to demean me to my face. Many of the people i see on a regular basis call me mom. Some say it jokingly, but some hope to get a rise out of me, using the name to insinuate i am less of a man. While i embraced the role from the start and considered myself lucky to be able watch my baby boy grow up, teaching him to crawl and talk; while i got goose bumps when my crying baby buried his head in my chest for comfort; and while i laughed at the fact that i was the one to lecture others on how to hold him, how hot to make his bottle or how to properly burp him, when people first started calling me mom, jokingly or not, i sometimes found it demeaning. Whenever people realized that i was the stay-at-home-dad, i felt the need to somehow slip into the conversation that i had a job and that i worked from home. i felt that people must have thought that i was
unemployed and that emasculated me in a way. i was actually embarrassed to leave the house, only doing so to run errands that told people i had a job (trips to the bank to cash paychecks or Kinko’s to copy work-related documents). “i understand that,” says Garret when i explained my past issues with being a stay-at-home dad. “Besides staying at home fitting our schedule better, my wife makes more than me. So, yeah, at first I felt like a bit of a failure. But then i realized there is nothing wrong with me and i got over it all.” So did i. One day i woke up and said, “This is ridiculous. Why i am so afraid of who i am? Why am i embarrassed to raise my son?” “i went through the same thing,” says Drew Emmert, who besides being a stay-at-home working father is also a single father. People should have been patting him on the back for raising a child on his own; instead, some tried to make him feel like he was less of a man. “Then i realized who the people were who were judging me – strangers and ignorant people. They didn’t know i was single and, even if i wasn’t a single dad, who cares? i realized i am luckier than most fathers. i get to see my son grow up.” “i am the luckiest man in the world,” Garret says. “This has been the best time of my life. i love being a stay-at-home dad.” Norman Rockwell is dead. Families have to do what works best for them not society’s stereotypes. in our family, mom and dad are names not roles. Our household just has two parents who love the kids. That is the new American family.

s we march through spring, endof-year exams and final grades are coming ever-closer. Keeping the student in your house ahead of the game and well-positioned for success can bring some very important lessons and results. Before you get too frustrated with your teen, please know that keeping up a good head of steam to finish the year strong is a mature skill. Not all students are ready to accomplish this totally on their own. Many students need help to find strategies that work for them. And finding those strategies before you send them off to college is very important. Making strong closing skills seem routine is a huge key to future success. That’s partially why we put these tasks in front of children as they mature. The challenge is that students face a universal truth when they confront and fully understand the importance of the endof-year activities: starting is easy, finishing is hard. Almost everyone starts an endeavor with enthusiasm and positive energy. However, keeping it up through tough times and the long slog of a school year is difficult. But it is an important part of the value of school because almost every other enterprise they will engage in for the rest of their lives, from business proposals to event planning, will reward a good start and a strong finish. Most school activities reward a strong finish because they are designed to teach that perseverance and responsibility leads to accomplishment. What better lesson is there?
Start right away – April is not too late! Early investments always bring the greatest returns. if you wait until too close to the end, the likelihood of stress and feelings of being overwhelmed increase greatly. Even cramming is most effective if you start from a strong base, so work to build the base early! Building the base means reading through notes, writing or covering review sheets (either alone or divided up in study groups) and making flash or note cards. it also means seeking out the teacher for help and advice. Review class notes. it really shouldn’t take too long to read your notes from each class all the way through from the beginning. Then read them through again and highlight important parts. These should be the parts that you focus on understanding or committing to memory. Write a one- or two-sentence summary (almost like a thesis statement) for each unit or topic. Understanding the big picture will help you to answer essay questions by giving you a framework you can populate with supporting details. Join/start a study group. An efficient way to capitalize on your strengths and minimize your weaknesses is a study group. it allows you to divide and conquer! Outline what needs to be done. Then divide the whole into smaller tasks for each member of the group. A benefit of this method is that you will be able to lean on each other and take advantage of each other’s strengths and perspectives. Be a good contributor and good things will happen. you’ll connect the material as you interact with your fellow students and make sense out of what you’ve covered in a course. When your group meets, include healthy brain-food snacks, such as nuts, dark chocolate, green tea, wild salmon and eggs. Make sure group gatherings don’t turn into social time (a little fun is OK)!
Make flash cards. An effective tool to help you memorize vocabulary or formulae, flash cards also can help with themes of novels or short stories and important dates or names for history. A big part of the learning that comes from flash cards lies in the process – the decisions you make in making and organizing the cards (see below). Make a note card. When i was a full-time classroom teacher, i would encourage my students to take one 3 x 5 note card and write whatever they wanted on both sides of the card. i then allowed them to use the card during tests and exams. The point was to: (1) help students focus their study by having to think, plan and strategize about what to include and exclude; and (2) to free the students’ study and test time from concentrating on memorization and focus it on critical thinking and application instead. Remembering the formula is important, but showing how you can use it is the real point of education (and should also be the point of assessment). Further, the note card method encouraged students to prepare more. Those with strong study skills loved the organization and focus the method provided. Those who were not likely to study much were often stimulated to do more because they could use the note card in the test. Of course, all this meant that tests were not about factual recall but about analysis and synthesis of the course material.
Prepare your own review sheets. Many schools require teachers to prepare and distribute review sheets a few weeks before the semester exam. Still other teachers use it as a tool even without being required to do so. if the teacher makes a review Here are a few suggestions to help you help your sheet, it’s an excellent tool. it tells the student what child find effective closing strategies to finish the the teacher thinks is important. if the teacher academic year strong. From this point on, i’ll didoes not supply one, make your own! it will cerrect my words to the student, so parents may want tainly help you focuscontinued and order work. onthe pagecourse’s 28 to clip this article from here down! labus the teacher has supplied to create a document that works for you. Don’t ignore exercise and the outdoors. Physical activity increases circulation and is good for the brain as well as the muscles! Outdoor activity can provide perspective and balance. Take advantage of how beautiful our weather is in Florida (pretty much year-round) and get outside for study breaks! The most important lesson. if school is truly to be preparation for success in life and career, then having exams and teaching students how to prepare for them is a great laboratory for creating confident, flexible adults who can solve the problems they face. The most important lesson that can be taught in this context is that there is no substitute for preparation. i want all students to learn that. Preparation allows you to coolly assess a situation. it allows you to be flexible and at ease. It provides insight as to how to approach the problem in front of you. This lesson has wide application across many dimensions of human endeavor, and it applies to just about everything our children will face in their careers and elsewhere. Whether the subject is history, biology or trigonometry, the real lessons of school are about how to think, how to approach problems and how to develop strategies to solve them. yths abound as to why women experience recurrent miscarriages. Stress, too much exercise, being too thin or too fat, exposure to environmental toxins and bad habits such as smoking or drinking too much coffee have all faced blame. However, a report released by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists shows that although environmental factors are a common concern of patients they have rarely been linked to sporadic pregnancy loss and no associations between environmental factors and recurrent pregnancy loss have been established. As a reproductive immunologist and iVF specialist, i know that miscarriages are not uncommon and are believed to occur with as many as one out of every four pregnancies. Often the woman will miscarry very early in pregnancy, sometimes even before she knows that she has conceived. However, for couples who have experienced a miscarriage this can be of little comfort. They are often desperate for a cure-all, sometimes grasping at unproven or useless remedies. What i offer instead is factual information, emotional support and, when possible, treatment based on a medically established cause.
Although many women experience one or two losses, most are able to conceive and carry a child to term. However, in cases of recurrent pregnancy losses, women continue to miscarry over and over again. Although genetic abnormalities of the embryo are identified as the cause for 60 percent of these cases, it’s not necessarily true once the heartbeat is detected. i advise patients who have not gotten pregnant with high quality embryos, experienced miscarriage of a genetically normal fetus or suffered a loss after the heart beat has been detected and those with a family history of auto-immune diseases and miscarriage to seek a consultation with a reproductive immunologist or fertility doctor who specializes in immunologic causes of infertility. There are different types of miscarriage, different treatments for each and different statistics for what your chances are of having one. Most miscarriages occur during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. Pregnancy can be such an exciting time; however, with the great number of recognized miscarriages that occur, it is beneficial to be informed about the causes and treatments of recurrent miscarriages. Today we know a great deal about the workings of the immune system and how it affects
a pregnancy. in fact, the mother’s immune system plays a critical role in the acceptance of an embryo. Immune Disorders immune disorders are a hot topic in reproductive medicine. The immune system is made up of a large network of cells, tissues and organs working together to fight off germs and infections and respond to allergens in the environment. But the immune system doesn’t always work the way it should. in some, immune system disorders prevent the body from fighting off infections. In others, the system incorrectly identifies parts of the body as a threat and attacks the body’s cells the same way it would attack an invading germ. Allergic reactions fall to one side of this spectrum, with life-threatening diseases such as lupus and multiple sclerosis, at the other end of the scale. What happens in all of these disorders is that the immune system loses its ability to distinguish between safe and harmful. Some couples trying to conceive may be diagnosed with immunologic incompatibility or allogeneic issues, which are detrimental to fertility. Genes from both of the parents that are passed on to their growing embryo may not properly communicate to the mother’s immune system and her body may mistake the embryo

Many doctors assume the cause of miscarriages is genetic or chromosomal abnormalities dismissing all other possible causes and in many cases putting the mother through unnecessary repeated episodes of pregnancy loss. identifying the root cause is the crucial starting point in miscarriage prevention. if we know that immune disorders are causing a woman to miscarry, there are preventive measures we can take. it’s precisely when an embryo is chromosomally normal that we need to look at the maternal immune system. Her immune system needs to be investigated as a cause. Immunologic Infertility A number of factors can impact a woman’s ability to carry a healthy pregnancy. Predisposition to immunologic abnormalities such as autoimmune disease, abnormal development of inflammatory cytokines in the mother’s blood, elevation of activated immune cells, immune response to proteins in sperm or failure to generate protective cells that a mother makes when pregnant can be associated with improper immune tolerance in the mother for the embryo. Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis and lupus are all examples of conditions that can lead to rejection of an embryo if not properly treated. Stress and dietary factors also may play a role in the mother’s immune tolerance of the pregnancy. Patients who suffer from recurrent miscarriages should first be sure there are no genetic causes of the miscarriage. By identifying the likely source of the problem, treatments can be given that help to correct them. The goal is trying as much as possible to assist in the immune tolerance that must be created. Most important is to rule out genetic issues as the only cause for the failures and miscarriages. Once this is done, i can focus on the immune system as one of the most likely causes of the failures or losses and help couples welcome a healthy baby.

Extraordinary woman
.......................................
By AngelA ArDOlinO
Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.
Sharona Ross, MD, describes herself as “a 43year-old woman who wanted it all!” All included becoming a surgeon and having four children. Born and raised in israel, she had to join the military immediately after high school. She says her military service prepared her well for her life today. “i learned to be independent, focused, organized and think outside the box. i learned how to lead people and developed problem-solving skills. All in all, my military service provided me with the necessary tools to build and shape my future.” So does Dr. Ross have it all? Read on.
What do you think is the secret to your family’s success? i believe that communication, realistic expectations and planning are key in any relationship. i met my husband Jack in Israel on the first weekend following my military service. We lived together for two years and decided to get married and build our lives together. From day one, i told him and his mother that i’m going to medical school to be a surgeon. i also told them that i don’t cook, clean or do laundry, setting the expectations from the beginning. During college, medical school and residency, i had my four children. Despite all odds, Jack and i managed to successfully complete both medical school and law school while having children. The key to having a successful relationship with my children is centered on spending quality time with them. Weekends are dedicated to my kids. i spend time with each one of my kids individually. This allows me to appreciate them for their uniqueness and everything that is going on in their lives. Their ages span over 11 years so one-on-one time is especially important. Pursuing my dreams professionally does come at a price. Fortunately, technology has allowed me to experience some of my children’s highlights from afar. Having videos of a good shot during a sports game or a song at a music recital allowed me to stay involved, even if by proxy.
What advice would you give to other women?
What else would you like to share with our readers?
Pursue your dreams! Make them a reality. As Golda Meir once said, “Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.”
Maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes a balanced, low-fat diet and exercise. Health is the most important investment you can make. i also think that it is important for other women to know that it is possible to achieve your personal goals and have a family. Being a surgeon was my goal from a very early age. i did everything in my power to be the best surgeon i could possibly be. This same passion carries over to my family. Having such veracity for both my family and job has helped me achieve a fulfilled life.
What is your proudest moment? One of my proudest moments is when my eldest son got into college. He independently worked through each one of his applications and got accepted to all of the schools to which he applied. i couldn’t have been prouder as his mother.
What is your biggest achievement? One of my greatest achievements was doing my first operation as an attending surgeon. This was the culmination of so much hard work: learning English as i worked toward my undergraduate degree, graduating top of my class in medical school and completing a surgical residency and two fellowships – all in all 15 years of training. The operation was an anti-reflux operation and i knew that i would be able to improve my patient’s quality of life. i remember celebrating this achievement with my family that same night. They too celebrated the work and the sacrifices that they had also gone through to help me get to that point.
What makes you happy? A productive day at work! When i’m able to help a patient, I feel fulfilled. Surgery for me is a calling. Actually, when i go home after a productive day and hang out with kids, now that is the perfect day.
How do you relax and take time for yourself? Between work and family, i don’t have much time for myself. i do try to work out every Sunday. i would like to relax with a weekly massage, riding my Harley or simply read a book but that rarely happens.
How do you enjoy information from the magazine? i have at times felt guilty for having such a demanding career with four kids at home. Seeing other people highlighted in your magazine who have the same demands in their lives has made me feel part of a community of hardworking parents.
Who is your biggest inspiration or role model? My biggest inspiration is my patients. At my surgical practice, Southeastern Center for Digestive Disorders and Pancreatic Cancer, we see patients that have acid reflux, achalasia and cancers, mostly of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver and gallbladder. The fortitude that our patients have is truly inspirational. Often, as they are under my treatment, i get to know their families very well. Seeing families come together during this trying time helps me also appreciate my family. One of my role models is my partner Alex Rosemurgy. His dedication, commitment and, most importantly, his excellence in the field of surgery are all qualities i strive to emulate. Unfortunately there are not many women within the field of surgery and, for this reason, I have created the international Women in Surgery Career Symposium. This year will be our fourth annual conference. Through this conference, i have met many other incredible women.

Partnership Results in Happy Tails Busch Gardens and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay are joining forces to raise adoption awareness for homeless dogs and cats. Busch Gardens Happy Tails, their new collaborative program, launched earlier this year and provides two complimentary single-day admission tickets to those who adopt a dog or cat from the Humane Society’s Tampa shelter.
Mtani, a Labrador-retriever mix, is the Tampa park’s most famous adoptee.
“Our goal with the Happy Tails program is to encourage the adoption of these great animals that need a loving home,” says Busch Gardens’ curator Rob yordi. “it’s our way of saying thank you to adopters who help save these animals.”
Busch Gardens has long supported local animal shelters, providing homes and a second chance at life for abandoned and neglected animals. For some animals once considered untrainable and adopted by the park, Busch Gardens has offered an opportunity to steal the stage and fans’ hearts through the park’s popular Critter Castaways show, which promotes the importance of shelter adoptions. The Tampa Bay park’s most famous adoptee Mtani, a Labrador-retriever mix, joined the Busch Gardens family in 2011 to become lifelong friends with Kasi the cheetah after the baby cheetah was orphaned. Since coming to the park, the cheetah and dog have lived together at Cheetah Run. Tickets provided are valid for a single-day admission to the theme park and are valid for one year from the pet adoption date. Tickets will be printed on-site at the shelter. Visit www.buschgardens. com/happytailstampa for additional information about Happy Tails.

On a Mission to Get Bay Area Kids Playin’, Movin’ On April 2, Playin’ in the Park returns to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park as it does every first Tuesday from March through August. its mission: to introduce kids ages 1 to 13 to a variety of activities available for exercise and encourage them to lead an active lifestyle. This is the third year that the 75,000 square-foot Tampa park serves as host to the increasingly popular free event that draws on average 1,000 attendees each month. it is the brainchild of the Fit Kids Playground organization, founded by Tampa mom of four Marisa Langford.
dates:
“i wanted to bring together all of the things that were healthy and well in the bay area to one resource, so that’s what people will find at our website and our blog. And the Fit Kids Playground events like Playin’ in the Park are for families to come and meet all of the people behind those events, products, services and organizations,” says Langford, who started Fit Kids Playground in early 2008 and launched its first event that same year in Hyde Park Village.
April 13, 6:30 p.m. Good Shepherd School Auction and Gala This fundraiser at a private home features music, appetizers, cocktails and live and silent auctions. Cocktail attire required. Tickets: $50 individual and $100 couple. www.goodshepherdtampa. org
Langford says her main goals in developing events like Playin’ in the Park are to combat lack of exercise and unhealthy eating patterns in children. She was excited that this year Humana, one of the event’s community partners, agreed to provide free bottled water for kids at every Playin’ in the Park event this year. Over the past three years, the event has attracted other sponsors who have been able to play a key role in growing the event’s reach – from media sponsors such as Tampa Bay Parenting and the Tampa Bay Times to area sports franchises such as the Rays and Lightning.
April 14, 1-4 p.m. Taste of South Tampa Sample the best in local cuisine and listen to live music as part of this South Tampa Chamber of Commerce fundraiser in Hyde Park Village. Portion of proceeds to benefit Humane Society of Tampa Bay. Dog and cat food donations also welcomed. www.southtampachamber.org
Playin’ in the Park activities being introduced this year include tennis through the U.S. Tennis Association and golf through First Tee of Tampa Bay. Another development is the addition of a Fit Kids Unplugged Fun Run Series set for July and August.
April 27, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Historic Home Workshop Attend this annual event at 1706 W. Cypress St., which connects homeowners with restoration experts. This year’s theme is Maintaining the Old House. Lunch is available for purchase. Admission: free for Tampa Preservation members and $5 for nonmembers. www. tampapreservation.com
in 2012, Langford received a 2012 Community Leader Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, one of only 50 awarded nationally. While she is proud of the achievement and appreciative of how supportive Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and the city of Tampa have been, she has an even bigger dream. “i would love to be that organization that the city partners with, to have the full support of the mayor and have Fit Kids Playground help the city of Tampa become designated as a Let’s Move! community.” Visit www.fitkidsplayground.com for more information on Playin’ in the Park.

Relay Participants on Their Marks The inaugural MS Run the US 2013 Relay sponsored by Money Mutual, a 3,000 mile relay run across the country, is slated to begin April 16 with 22 divided relay segments to carry through the week of Sept. 6. This month’s event starts in Los Angeles and crosses the country to wrap up in New york five months later. in between, each of the 13 participating Running Partners take on a 140mile leg of the cross-country journey, running 20 to 30 miles a day over five to six days. The race will finish with featured participant “Team Jill,” a group of individuals racing in honor of Jill Kumlien, mother to the event founder Ashley Kumlien. Jill has lived with MS since 1980. This year, an estimated 70,000 individuals, who are long distance runners or athletes involved with the MS cause, were invited to take part in the relay race. While not for the athletic faint of heart, the event offers serious runners a chance to become a unique contributor to a far-reaching fundraiser in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s campaign efforts to end MS. Those who wish to follow the participants along their journey virtually at the event website can also donate on behalf of runners. All proceeds that are raised over the course of the relay support MS research. This year’s course was designed to mimic a 2010 transcontinental run that the event founder ran on behalf of her mother on the 30th anniversary of her fight against MS. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS affects 400,000 Americans. The MS Run the US mimics a course that event founder Ashley Kumlien, right, ran in 2010 in honor of mom Jill, who has lived with MS since 1980. Worldwide, that figure rises to nearly 2.1 million people. Symptoms of MS include walking and balance disturbances, muscle spasticity and cognitive dysfunction. The MS Run the US Relay is accepting applicants for the 2014 relay through Oct. 31. Distance runners who would like to apply to become a Running Partner in next year’s relay can visit the event site at www.msruntheus.com.

The not-for-profit, communityowned Winter Haven Hospital serves as Legoland Florida’s official hospital, and provides support for the healthcare and medical needs of park visitors as well as the occupational health needs of employees. “We are very excited to bring the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation Citrus Classic back to Legoland Florida and renew our commitment not only toward the health of our participants, but toward the future healthcare needs of women and children in Central Florida,” says David Johnson, director of finance at Legoland Florida. Johnson is a Winter Haven Hospital Foundation trustee and also serves as the 2013 Citrus Classic chair. “The fact that a fun event like the Citrus Classic can also have a positive long-term impact on healthcare in Central Florida only makes it more special for everyone.” Hundreds of participants are expected to take part in the Citrus Classic. Registration fees are $30 for adults and $20 for kids 12 and under. Winners will receive a specially designed Lego trophy. An exclusive Legoland Florida discount ticket offer will also be extended to every race participant to enjoy a full day of play following the event. Participants can register at www.active. com or by contacting the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation at 863-292-4138 or foundation@ winterhavenhospital.org. “We are extraordinarily grateful for Legoland Florida’s active and enthusiastic participation in the Citrus Classic, a great Winter Haven community tradition,” says Eric Adamson, chairman of the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation. “We saw a dramatic increase in participation last year, largely due to the fact that Legoland Florida is such an attractive location for our runners. Because of the park’s great appeal, we see the Foundation Classic growing into a major regional sporting event that brings participants from throughout the state of Florida and even from across the United States.” For more information about this year’s event or the foundation, go to www.whhfoundation.org.
