Meet the guest editor
Coming Together: How Our Community Shapes Us
Dear Parents,
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. As the guest editor of Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine's April edition, I'm thrilled to shed light on the vital role of community collaboration in protecting children. About eight years ago, I started out as a child welfare case manager, hoping to reunite families torn apart by abuse and neglect. I quickly realized that real change comes from all of us working together to support families in need. In other words, “It takes a village.”
When you're growing up, it's not just your parents who shape you, it’s everyone around you—neighbors, teachers and friends—who all have a hand in making you who you are. I grew up in a small county, two hours north of Tampa Bay, called Lake County, Florida. During my senior year of high school, my mom became ill, and my father passed away. I felt completely lost. It was the support from my community that got me through it. Whether it was a kind word or someone lending a hand, it showed me how powerful it is when we come together.
BECOME A FAN tampabayparenting @tampabayparenting @TBParenting
I now work as the Hillsborough County Community Alliance Coordinator, employed by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. My work focuses on the importance of strengthening community collaboration and the effect it has on the future of children and families, creating stronger “villages.”
My husband and I are the proud parents of three beautiful children: Kayci (6), Khloi (5) and Cj (2). We quickly recognized that the it-takes-a-village concept exceeds words; it embodies a deep philosophy of community collaboration and responsibility.
In closing, I challenge you, if you have even the smallest opportunity to be a part of anyone’s village, take it! Let’s keep supporting each other, Tampa Bay, because when we do, we make our community stronger for everyone.
Kalen Graham

Our Favorite April Festivals
Springtime in Tampa Bay means a weekend schedule packed with festivals. A few of our favorites are back, and we have a NEW addition this year!
BUSCH GARDENS FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL IN TAMPA
WHEN: Saturdays and Sundays from noon to park closing through May 19
This is your chance to feast around the world without leaving Tampa Bay! If you’ve been to the Food and Wine Festival before, you’ll notice this year is different, but in a good way, with 17 cabins in the Festival Pathway, Festival Field and Bird Gardens areas. While we’ve seen regions around the world featured in the past, this year’s offerings hone on specific countries like Argentina, Chile, Spain, France, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Italy. There are cabins focused on Old World Wines, Moonshine Tasting and USA Desserts.
Says Executive Chef Matt Maslowski (celebrating his second Food and Wine Festival): “We are trying to bring theme park food to another level that people aren’t used to.”
Each weekend features live concerts with national headliners like Gavin DeGraw on April 21 and Andy Grammar on April 27.
The event is included with admission, but if you want to save at the cabins, we suggest purchasing the sampler lanyard. You can buy a 10-item sampler for $70 or a 15-item sampler for $85. Pass members can buy an 18-item sampler for the price of the 15-item sampler.
KEEL
FARMS BLUEBERRY FESTIVAL IN PLANT CITY
WHEN: Saturday, March 30; April 6-7, 13-14 & 20-21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Tampa Bay’s favorite event celebrating the blueberry returns with the 16th annual Keel Farms Blueberry Festival. You can expect plenty of family-friendly activities like bounce houses, camel rides, a petting zoo, and of course, u-pick blueberries! Admission is free, but parking is $10. There is a fee for U-pick or you can purchase pre-picked berries to take home.
NEW: HUNSADER FARMS 1ST ANNUAL FLOWER FESTIVAL IN BRADENTON
WHEN: April 13-14 & 20-21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hunsader Farms is always a favorite day trip in the springtime with its beautiful u-pick flowers. At their inaugural Flower Festival, expect multiple fields of cut-your-own flowers, hayrides, train rides, pony rides, live bands, food vendors, craft vendors, fresh produce, petting zoo, gem mining and more. Admission is $15 and kids 10 and younger are free. If you want to pick flowers, you can purchase a picking cup.

EPCOT INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN FESTIVAL AT WALT DISNEY WORLD
WHEN: Daily through May 27
This is one of our favorite festivals at EPCOT because it inspires and offers something for everyone in the family, from the green thumb to the foodie. There’s plenty for kids as well, like Spike’s Pollen-Nation Exploration Scavenger Hunt and the Play Garden playground.
As foodies sip and taste their way through the 18 festival-exclusive Outdoor Kitchens, the green thumb (or wannabe gardener) can be inspired by the topiaries and 25 themed gardens. Among our favorite gardens are the Bouquet Garden in the France pavilion and the new PB&J Garden at the bridge to the World Showcase—it’s filled with funny jokes for kids and fun facts. Music lovers in the family can enjoy daily live concerts as part of the Garden Rocks concert series.

Sun-Spotting
The 2024 solar eclipse is coming. Here’s a quick guide from MOSI for your family
by Janet White, Director of Education at MOSI
In April, millions of people across North America will experience a total solar eclipse—a rare astronomical event. Witnessing the eclipse is a fun, educational experience for anyone of any age. Here’s why it’s happening and how to see it safely.
What is an eclipse?
To put it simply for kids—an eclipse is a rare event where the moon moves in between the earth and the sun. It’s a total solar eclipse if the moon’s path lines up perfectly, so the Moon completely covers the sun. It’s a partial solar eclipse if the moon’s path covers only a portion of the sun. If you’re looking for a little more explanation, the sun’s diameter (how “wide” it is) is about 400 times larger than the moon’s. The sun also lies about 400 times farther away than the moon. Thanks to this incredible coincidence, the sun and the moon appear to be just about the same size in the sky from our vantage point here on earth.
The solar eclipse is on April 8
FUN FACT:
The next total solar eclipse to cross the contiguous United States will take place in 2044.
When is the eclipse?
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible to people in parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada. In the United States, it will begin in Texas at 1:23 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and end in Maine at 4:40 p.m. The width of the “path of totality”—where the moon will totally block the sun—ranges between 62 and 71 miles.
How can we see the eclipse?
In Florida, we are not in the path of totality, but we will certainly see a change if we view the sun safely. The moon will block about 60% of the sun’s solar disk. It is never safe to look directly at the sun— even during an eclipse—without appropriate safety gear.
José Cotayo, an education specialist at MOSI, says, “Regular sunglasses are not enough to protect your eyes for direct solar viewing. You must use eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard or a welder’s mask that is shade #12 and is free of lens scratches.”
Again, never look directly at the sun without proper filtration.
View the solar eclipse at MOSI
Join our watch party! MOSI will host a Solar Eclipse Celebration, included with MOSI admission, in its outdoor Science Park on Monday, April 8, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Guests can join in hands-on sun-themed science activities, watch live streams of the eclipse along the exhibit path and use sun-safe solar telescopes staffed by a team of MOSI astronomers. Eclipse glasses will be available for purchase.
What if I can’t make it to MOSI?
If you can’t join the Solar Eclipse Celebration at MOSI, and don’t have eclipse glasses, you can still experience it.
Cotayo says to grab anything with small holes, like a colander from your kitchen. Hold it a little above the ground and look down— you’ll see eclipse-shaped shadows cast on the ground. Also, be sure to look down at the shadows beneath trees—the leaves act as pinhole projectors, resulting in a memorable sight!

The Future is WILD at ZooTampa: A Look Ahead at Future Expansions
by Laura Byrne
If you haven’t experienced the NEW Australia Realm at ZooTampa, you need to add it to your list of things to do with the kids. This most recent expansion as part of the Zoo’s Year of More features a new ride, dry play area, expanded splash pad, outdoor bar and returning favorites like the Koala Clubhouse playground and Tasmanian Tiger coaster.
The transformations don’t end here. ZooTampa has big plans for the future. We caught up with Scott Rose, ZooTampa’s chief operating officer, to learn more about these plans and their significance to the future of our planet.
TBPM: One thing we love about ZooTampa is the opportunity to “travel around the world,” especially for those who are unable to travel as far away as Australia. It helps kids realize our world is a much bigger place than just Tampa Bay.
SR: That’s what the zoo is all about, and that's why we renamed the area “Australia” so that you have a feel for going to the continent. Around the zoo, we have Africa, we have Asia, we have Florida. Our realms are typically themed to a general area of the world featuring animals from that area so kids, families and even adults can connect with these animals.
TBPM: ZooTampa is more than just a zoo. The work being done here each day is helping to change the world.
SR: Yes, we are a conservation organization. One of our biggest conservation initiatives is with manatees, and we are in the process of adding two new manatee critical care pools. We have three critical care pools now, in addition to our large rehabilitation pool. ZooTampa is one of only two critical care hospitals in the country.
The new critical care pools will allow us to expand our capacity to take care of sick, injured or orphaned manatees—very important in today's world.
TBPM: What are the future plans for ZooTampa?
SR: We've just announced a 25- to 30-year master plan that will transform the zoo, starting with the renovation of our Manatee Rescue area. We talked about the two new critical care pools that we're introducing. Following that, we will renovate the underwater manatee viewing building along with our river otter habitat. That's scheduled to open in early 2026.
Beyond that, we're looking at the expansion of the zoo. We're working with the city right now on expanding the zoo into Lowry Park to an area where the city maintenance facility currently sits. The zoo wouldn't take up any public access space that exists there today, but just beyond the parcel where the city maintenance facility sits, we'll build a realm for South America and have animals from South America, such as jaguars and giant river otters

and harpy eagles. We'll connect the zoo by a pedestrian bridge over North Boulevard.
That's probably in about a 10-year horizon from now. A significant amount of fundraising needs to take place for us to work on that new realm, but we're very excited about that.
TBPM: So it’s truly going to take a community effort to make these efforts possible.
SR: Absolutely. ZooTampa is a not-for-profit organization. In order for us to do all of this and to continue to grow, we need support from donors, we need support from families. We need support from governmental organizations, public funding and grant funding so that we can continue to do all the good work that the team does with protecting and preserving wildlife.
TBPM: What about individuals and organizations that have bigger budgets?
SR: We have lots of opportunities to donate to the zoo, like sponsoring different habitats or areas. We have fundraisers throughout the course of the year. We just had a fundraiser, Karamu. We've got giving opportunities for all different levels of contributions.
It’s an exciting time for the zoo. So we've got a lot going on and we're pretty excited about rolling it all out and giving guests more reasons to visit and giving guests more reasons to become members.
TBPM: Those who are new to Tampa Bay may not realize the zoo is also an educational organization.
SR: We have a Zoo School right here on the property teaching young kids to maybe become the future zoologists. We have educational programs and outreach programs that go out to schools and events. We have probably one of the most popular summer camps here. We have programs for underserved communities here providing opportunities to visit the zoo where otherwise they might not have been able to do that.
TBPM: For those of us who don’t have big budgets, but still want to support the zoo, what can we do as families to contribute?
SR: First of all, visiting the zoo is supporting us. All of the revenue that comes in through ticket sales or membership sales, food and beverage and merchandise … all of that goes into our operating budgets, allowing us to continue to grow and do what we do. So [is] visiting the zoo and supporting some of the programs that we have out there like Adopt an Animal, and other things that can be found on our website, ZooTampa.org.
TBPM: The connection with the animals goes beyond viewing from behind a fence or glass. ZooTampa offers several Signature Encounters like the new In-Water Stingray Encounter in Stingray Shores and Wallaby Encounter in Australia. Why is it important to offer these experiences for families?
SR: It helps them to have a greater appreciation for animals and understand the threats that are out there for animals and be able to take action to help protect animals in the wild.
All of this is intended to inspire young people to take action to protect and preserve wildlife.
TBPM: ZooTampa truly is more than just an attraction.
SR: The zoo is really a community asset and we work hard every day to be a community asset. It's a place where guests can come and connect with wildlife. It's a place where friends and family can come and connect with each other, spending time together in a beautiful environment surrounded by nature. It’s more than a zoo.

FAT BEET FARM
13830 W. Hillsborough Ave., Tampa
Using green initiatives, Fat Beet Farm doubles as a market and a place where families can learn about sustainable farming in Florida. The heart of their farm is the Biodigester—a giant machine that’s fed with all the waste from their kitchen and crops, which is then broken down and used as a nutrient-dense fertilizer. They offer farm tours, including special kids’ tours. You can also purchase freshly made meals, bakery items, take-and-bake items and lettuce and microgreens. fatbeetfarm.com
This sustainable local farm produces an array of products like eggs, goat and cow milk, homemade goat cheeses, yogurt, kefir, artisanal goat milk soaps, shampoos and shaving bars. You can pick up their products on select days at their main Tampa farm or at their St. Pete Meet Up. And be sure to inquire about farm tours! Little ones will love visiting with the animals while learning where their farm-fresh products come from. dancinggoatdairy.com

RESCUE & RESTORE:
A look inside The Florida Aquarium’s expanded Coral Conservation & Research Center
by Rachel Morgan, Senior Coral Care Biologist at The Florida Aquarium
The Florida Aquarium, world-renowned for its leadership in coral restoration and reproduction, officially opened a new 4,200-squarefoot expansion of its Coral Conservation and Research Center at the Apollo Beach campus.
During a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, dignitaries, partners and stakeholders from across the state joined the celebration, highlighting the Aquarium’s unwavering dedication to advancing critical coral conservation efforts.
The expansion more than doubles the current facility and is a pivotal step for the aquarium’s acclaimed coral restoration and research work. In collaboration with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the addition takes on added significance in the wake of the detrimental impact of last summer’s record-breaking warm ocean temperatures on threatened and endangered coral species along the Florida Reef Tract, the third largest barrier reef in the world.
The new area provides space beyond the aquarium’s existing coral greenhouses and spawning laboratories. With 9,000 total square feet, the facility is dedicated to preserving, breeding and rearing corals facing the risk of extinction in the wild. There are 14 coral species spawned at the Aquarium’s coral center, which are rarely held in human care.
SPAWNING SEA URCHINS
Another important part of the Florida Reef Tract is the sea urchin population. For several years, The Florida Aquarium has been working with researchers with the University of Florida to spawn sea urchins in its lab to release them back to the reef through FWC. It is the largest effort to restock the urchin population in the last 20 years. These urchins provide a vital service, scouring over the reef’s surface and feeding on algae that is fueled by pollution and can suffocate healthy coral reefs.
The Florida Aquarium’s innovative Coral Conservation Program has made international headlines with its reproductive breakthroughs, including:
2019: Spawned several species of Atlantic coral in a laboratory setting for the first time.
2020: First in the world to reproduce the ridged cactus coral & spiny flower coral. Induced spawning of the grooved brain coral.
2022: Successfully reproduced elkhorn coral in the care of marine biologists.
SEA TURTLE REHABILITATION CENTER
Adjoining the Coral Conservation and Research Center is the Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center, where right now, biologists are caring for several cold-stunned turtles from the Northeast. Sea turtles that have stranded due to cold water temperatures receive care from biologists at the facility with the goal to release the turtles back into the ocean.
VISIT THE FLORIDA AQUARIUM’S APOLLO BEACH CAMPUS
The aquarium’s Apollo Beach campus is open to the Public Nov. 1 through April 1 with TECO’s Manatee Viewing Center. It is a free activity and there are natural trails, manatees, stingrays and educational displays. The Florida Aquarium campus is located on the outer edge of the property. Guests can hike or take a tram to visit The Florida Aquarium Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center as well see the Coral Conservation and Research Center via video feed.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
There are many factors affecting reefs, but ultimately reducing our carbon footprint and being more conscious of waste and water usage makes the biggest difference. There are also small changes you can make in your life that add up to help our blue planet such as recycling, using cloth grocery bags and eliminating use of straws. If you are interested in volunteering with The Florida Aquarium, visit flaquarium.org to apply and specify your area of interest.

Unique Outdoor Adventures at Walt Disney World
(And you don’t even have to visit a theme park!)
by Laura Byrne
The theme parks are what put Walt Disney World on the map for visitors from around the world, but it’s so much more than that. There are some pretty amazing things you can do as a family without stepping foot into the theme parks to still have a magical staycation, or even a day trip!
Fishing at Disney!
Whether you’ve got a seasoned fisherman in the family or you’ve never been, a fishing trip at a Disney property is a must-do. You can either rent a pole and fish from the docks or go on a guided fishing trip, which is what we did.
Disney teamed up with guides from Take Me Fishing who lead the tours on either a pontoon boat for up to five people or a bass boat for up to three. They supply everything you need, including the rod and reel, tackle, bait, soft drinks and water. Kids ages 12 and younger will need to wear a supplied life jacket too, so this policy is a bit stricter than the state law requires, but it is for your child’s safety.
Footgolf at Disney:
Move over pickleball, and make way for FootGolf! I don’t know how I’d never heard of this sport, but it quickly became a family favorite! It’s basically a mashup of soccer and golf and is played on Disney’s 9-hole walking course, Oak Trail Golf Course. We love this activity because people of all ages can play and even the little ones will get a kick out of it, literally! The goal is to kick the FootGolf ball (a regulation #5 soccer ball) into the 21-inch diameter holes in the course.
Timeslots are available on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Golf and FootGolf on the Oak Trail course are not played at the same time, so there won’t be an overlap. As with a regular golf game on the 9-hole golf course, it takes about 90 minutes to play a round. You can book same day if times are available, so it’s a great last-minute plan for Disney. Footgolf or a round of golf on the Oak Trail course are included as options in the Water Park and Sports Option, so this is worth the upgrade to your ticket.
Visit Cinderalla’s ponies at Tri-Circle-D Ranch:
I’ve been a Disney annual pass holder for years and had no idea you could visit the home of Cinderella’s ponies for free! This is such a cool thing to do with kids at Disney World and a nice quiet retreat from the crowds of the theme parks.
The Tri-Circle D Ranch is located inside Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and is home to 90 of the happiest horses and ponies on Earth! You’ll find the stable near the campground sites. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Simply park and walk up to the stables where you can learn about the horses and ponies and even see a unique piece of Disney history, the Dragon Calliope—a horse-drawn musical instrument Walt purchased for Disneyland in the 1950s.
There is also a mini museum that you can explore to learn how Walt Disney made his first nickel drawing, a picture of a horse, when he was a child. At the ranch, they like to say, “It all didn’t start with a mouse; it started with a horse!”
Head over to Pioneer Hall near the Tri-Circle D Ranch to book a walk-up pony ride for $10 or wagon ride ($15 for ages 10 and up and $10 for guests ages 3-9). Kids 9 and older and adults can experience a horseback trail ride too.
The rides are $65 each and 45 minutes long.
Trail rides require advance reservations, which you can book through your My Disney Experience app.

For our excursion, which left from Fort Wilderness Resort, we went fishing in a few different spots on Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon. While fishing is a sport of patience, it didn’t take long for my kiddo to catch his first bass—and it was a big one! Note that this is a catch-and-release experience only. How to Find Books Your Kids Will Love
by Niki Meister, Hillsborough County Public Library librarian
As parents, we sometimes struggle to find books that our children are interested in reading. When my son was younger, I would pick out books that I wanted to read to him. Now that he is older, he is becoming more opinionated about what he wants to read. The best course of action is to allow him to pick out the books he wants to read.
Whenever we visited a Hillsborough County Public Library (HCPLC) branch, we headed to the children’s section so he could look through the books on the shelves and decide what books he was interested in reading.
As my son grew up, and the stack of books he wanted kept expanding, I decided it was time for him to receive his library card. This allowed him more checkouts and holds (35 books at a time for both) while also making it more his responsibility to keep track of his card and account.
When we visited the library, I encouraged him to browse the shelves and pick out his books. As my son aged, his taste
became more discerning. He wanted books with a specific theme or books about movies and television shows he was interested in. This is where the HCPLC catalog came in handy.
Whether he used it at a library location using the catalog computer or from home using the website (HCPLC.org), the catalog allowed my son more freedom in finding the kinds of books he wanted to read. Using the search field on the HCPLC website, we typed in what he was looking for so he could scroll and find the book he wanted and check its availability at our local branch. If the books he was interested in were at a different location, we could use the same catalog to order those books and put them on hold so they could be sent to be picked up at our local branch.
As kids age, their needs and wants for finding books also evolve. It’s up to us parents to help foster that desire and provide our kids with the best resources to meet their changing needs.
Read about some of HCPLC’s resources below:
Libby is a mobile app that supports users in accessing library services. Libby provides audiobooks and e-books for kids, juveniles and adults. Libby is an incredibly user-friendly application. Use your library card and PIN to sign into your Libby account.
Hoopla is a web and mobile library media streaming platform that provides audiobooks, comics, e-books, movies, television and music. If your kid cannot access a cell phone or a tablet, Hoopla is fantastic because you can read the e-books on a laptop or desktop computer. Use your library card and PIN to sign into your Hoopla account.
Boundless, formally Axis 360, is another resource for kids and young adults to find e-books using a mobile device or PC. Use your library card and PIN to log into your Boundless 360 account.

Friends are good for the soul. We feel it, and research proves it. “The number one thing that determines our overall wellbeing and life satisfaction is the quality of our relationships,” says Danielle Bayard Jackson, citing a Harvard University study on happiness. The former educator is now a friendship coach who focuses on women’s friendships. Her debut book, “Fighting For Our Friendships,” explains why these friendships are so deep, yet fragile, and provides tangible strategies to nurture, strengthen and make time for these relationships, even in the midst of mounting family and work responsibilities.
Once we get married and start to have children, many of us stop nurturing our female friendships. Why is it so important to hold on to these relationships?
The research tells us that women are often tasked with most of the domestic labor, which leaves them less time and energy to pour into their other relationships. But we need these relationships to feel safe, seen and supported in our lives.
How do you make time for friends when mom life is so busy?
Step number one is to enlist the help of your immediate family. Tell your partner and your family that it's important to you that you have time for friends because you're going to need their help to make it happen. They need to make sure that they're watching the kids and taking on their fair share of domestic labor so that you're able to pour into your friendships. That helps to keep you accountable, and it makes them step up.
Ladies, It’s Time To Fight For Your Friendships
by Maggie Rodriguez, co-host of Daytime on WFLA News Channel 8
A nationally recognized friendship coach and Tampa Bay resident spotlights female friendships in her book
Step number two is to communicate it to your friends. Tell your friends you want more time together so that they can join you in being more intentional about carving out that space.
Step number three is to rethink what hangouts look like. Hangouts don't always look like hours-long brunches or late nights. Sometimes it looks like running errands together at Target or walking around the park while you catch up on each other's lives.
As a mother of two little ones (ages 5 and 2), what do you want to model for them as they start to make friends?
I want my kids to learn three things by watching me manage my friendships. One, I want them to learn how to navigate healthy conflict because it's inevitable. I want them to see me work through things with my friends, including expressing my boundaries or apologizing when I'm wrong. Two, I want them to see me prioritize friendship, so they need to see me take time away to pour into my friendships and to see that I am more than just a mom. Three, I want them to see me express kindness because I want my kids to be inviters, not excluders. I want them to be empathetic of others’ feelings. But they only get to see what that looks like if they watch me do it.
What’s the key takeaway from the book?
Friendship is so much more than a recreational pastime. It's about so much more than having people to go to brunch with. Friendship is a wellness imperative and has a direct impact on our health and happiness. And I think once we begin prioritizing it the same way we do other relationships, the better we will all be for it.

Moms to Know
Christian Vorderbrueggen
Founder, Blush x Bashful
by Julie Tingley, founder of @weemacree
When it comes to trying on clothes or finding a bra that actually does what it is supposed to do, many of us will agree that things aren’t the same after having children. Unfortunately, if something doesn’t fit or feel good, we move on to the next thing, leave a store empty-handed or return an entire online order in disappointment— over and over again. But not this mom. With a background in fashion and a passion for dressing women the right way, Christian Vorderbrueggen decided to create the next thing and end the cycle of disappointment with a maternity bra that combines comfort and beauty.
TBPM: The "Founder’s Story" of a company is just as important as the brand itself. There are so many connections people make with a product just by knowing more about the person who started it all. What is your story, and how does Blush x Bashful represent you as a woman and mother?
CV: I had a vision to start this company when I was a new mom, and I knew I wanted to breastfeed my daughter. I ordered a couple (OK, 20) nursing bras to see if I could find something I would like. I didn’t feel like I looked good in clothing, I didn’t feel like my breasts were supported enough, and I was also having hot flashes at the time, so I was so uncomfortable. It was an awkward stage for me as a mom, so I kept ordering bras hoping to find the right one. I never did. Instead, I decided that I would create a bra that would help women feel beautiful and supported. Prior to becoming a mom, I worked at Nordstrom as a personal stylist and dressed women every single day for 17 years. The foundation for every wardrobe begins with undergarments. I realized in that role that nine out of 10 women were wearing the wrong bra size, and that really makes a difference in how clothes fit and the way a woman feels every day. Also, I was receiving messages on social media about the bras that I was wearing when I had my daughter, so I knew it was time to start Blush x Bashful.
TBPM: Talk to us about product development. What has been your process of bringing a product-based idea to market?
CV: The process has certainly been a labor of love! What started as an idea in my daughter’s nursery shortly after she was born quickly developed into the process of starting a company. The entire process took two and a half years and involved finding all of the right people to help bring my vision to life. From the design to manufacturing, I was very involved every step of the way, sampling and wear-testing many rounds of developed products. I personally wore and washed our products hundreds of times before they had my stamp of approval. I was also very involved in all rounds of fitting models, who were all real-life moms of all sizes, including myself. There were many hours of calls, emails and photoshoots, as well as the social planning side of the business all the way up to launch.
TBPM: What is your long-term vision for this brand?
CV: My long-term vision for Blush + Bashful is to continue to help women feel comfortable and beautiful during pregnancy and beyond. We are currently developing new products and super excited for more launches in the future! [For now,] Blush + Bashful is available online at www.blushandbashful.com
TBPM: In addition to growing Blush x Bashful, you have also cultivated one of the most trustworthy and welcoming platforms on social media for years. What is your take on being an “influencer”?
CV: Staying true to who I am is always at the forefront of my mind. Sharing products that I believe in and that I genuinely love goes a long way, and with that also means saying no to offers that don’t necessarily fit my personal style or life.
TBPM: As someone who is a go-to girl for so many things women need—from style and fashion finds to home decor sources and motherhood tips—where do you go for inspiration and support?
CV: I find so much inspiration in my children, my husband, my mom and my friends. Spending time and talking with the ones I love the most always motivates me and gives me ideas. Of course Pinterest and Instagram are very fun places for inspiration as well! Equally, I thrive when I have some quiet time to meditate, pray and just be.
TBPM: As your online audience and engagement grow, how has this affected your ability to connect with your followers and find time for friends in real life?
CV: I think having a big support system has helped a ton! My husband is very helpful around the house and with our kids. My mom also comes to visit often and stays with us, which is super helpful to me plus special to watch her bond grow with her grandchildren. My in-laws are also very involved, which is wonderful. It truly takes a village! Even with all the help, my time for friends in real life is minimal because, during my downtime, I want to spend as much time with my children as possible. That all being said, I try to schedule something once a week, even if it’s an hour coffee with my girlfriends to recharge.
TBPM: What is your favorite thing to do with your family in Tampa Bay?
CV: Some of our fondest memories are eating at The Columbia and visiting the Aquarium.

Kids to Know:
Daniel Rodriguez
by Julie Tingley, founder of @weemacree
In a country where customer service and client experience are on the decline and the investment for AI solutions has replaced live conversation on company telephone lines, it is refreshing to find a local small business where the next generation wants to do better. If you’ve ever visited Elite Body Cryotherapy in St. Petersburg, you may know Daniel. At 5 years old, Daniel is inherently drawn to connection, he doesn’t shy away from conversation, and he seeks ways to be helpful in his family business. He is a joy to all who are greeted by his smile, a friend to the members who frequent this business, and a kid to know in April—his birthday month!
TBPM: Tell us about you and your family.
DR: My family is mommy and daddy and Julian and me and Abuela and Abuelo.
TBPM: Please share what your family business is and what you do there when you go.
DR: Mommy’s work is the Cryotherapy! When I come to Mommy’s work, I bring my scooter and Legos. I like it there. Cryotherapy is fun and super cold! I hold the door for people! Rob (a client) also feels better after the Cryotherapy!
TBPM: In what ways do you help people when you are at Elite Body Cryotherapy? How does it make you feel when you are helpful?
DR: When I come to work, I play, I help and I talk to James and Sue (clients). I help clean the Cryotherapy and the chairs. Also, we do laundry. I know how to clean the floors, and when people come, I open the door for them.
TBPM: What are some things you have learned to do by spending time with your mom at work?
DR: I know how to turn the leg on (to compression therapy)! I know how to talk on the phone (to greet clients with his mother’s permission)! I know how to clean the floors too! I can help with laundry!
TBPM: Now that you know what it’s like owning a business, what do you want to do or be when you grow up?
DR: I want to be a doctor to help people if they are sick! But you can also call 911 and the ambulance will take the people to the hospital if they are really sick.
TBPM: Can you explain the things you like to do when you’re not in school or at work with your mom?
DR: I like playing with Julian (baby brother) and I like to play with Daddy. I also like playing Legos with in my Lego box. And I like playing baseball because you can run really fast, and I like hitting the ball because that’s my favorite!
TBPM: Share something you have done that makes you proud of yourself.
DR: I know how to do take away and adding! I like my table puzzle (a 500-piece NFL puzzle that he put together).
TBPM: What does it mean to you to have a dad who is in the military?
DR: Daddy works at CENTCOM (Central Command at MacDill AFB). I go to Daddy’s work one time. He has a green uniform. He picks me up from school after work! Daddy is super strong. I love my Daddy!
TBPM: What are your favorite things to do with your baby brother, mom, and dad in Tampa Bay?
DR: I like the Rays, the Lightning and the Bucs. The Bucs are my favorite. I like the beach. I like the water and to play with the sand. That’s my favorite thing! I like to play with my excavator and my scooter at home.

Behind Every Great Cookie is a Resilient Girl Scout
by Tara Payor, Ph.D.
Cookies and badges are sweet, but Girl Scouting encompasses more than Thin Mints and financial literacy badges. Girl Scouting is about the undergirding lessons, ones carried throughout a woman’s life. Tampa Bay houses the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, which spans eight counties and is one of the country’s fastest growing councils. GSWCF CEO Mary Pat King shares how Girl Scouts supports girls’ personal development and bay area communities.
LESSON: Leadership
King, also a Girl Scout mom, spent years working at national headquarters in Washington D.C. She assumed her role as chief executive officer of GSWCF on March 16, 2020, right when the world shut down. King’s CEO journey alongside GSWCF’s staff and volunteers has strengthened her leadership skills. A Girl Scout for only two years because of her family’s move to a city with limited troop opportunities, King is ensuring that GSWCF is entrenched in the bay area.
LESSON: Summer Camps
“Girl Scouting builds leaders through unique opportunities,” she says. At sixth grade, girls can serve on GSWCF’s Advisory Board; by 14, they can serve on the Board of Directors. They can bolster leadership skills through communication by serving as spokespersons and content creators. “Many Girl Scouts are courageous leaders, leading improvements in their schools, communities and individual academic ambitions,” King says.
LESSON: Entrepreneurship
Girl Scout Cookie sales teach girls goal setting, budgeting, planning and marketing. Girls also learn to engage adults and make eye contact. “People see Girl Scout Cookies and focus on the product,” King says. “Happenings behind the product prepare girls for the workforce.” Girl Scouts introduces members to numerous careers while, King says, “preparing the tail end of tomorrow.” Girl Scouting supports girls’ longterm career goals by building a strong sense of self.
LESSON: Relationship
Beyond building resilient women, Girl Scouting builds healthy peer relationships. Girl Scouts learn civil debate—disagreement and disrespect don’t pair well. “Despite opposing viewpoints, girls celebrate each other in noncompetitive environments,” King says. “We’re unified under Girl Scout Law and remain committed to it.” She believes that Girl Scouts’ loyalty to the law is visible globally and across generations and that character traits cultivated through Girl Scouting are the bedrock of collaborative relationships.
LESSON: STEMapalooza
An interactive family-friendly experience that is open to the public, GSWCF’s STEMapalooza occurs on April 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Florida Polytechnic University. STEMapalooza offers everything from coding to caring for animals to speaking with astronauts and engineers. “It’s great seeing girls experience it with their dads and brothers,” King says. Attendees can register for Girl Scout’s extended year membership (begins April 1), which grants access to Girl Scout programming—including summer camps.
GSWCF’s summer camps, Wai Lani (Palm Harbor), Wildwood (Sumter County), Indian Echo (Hudson) and Dorothy Thomas (Riverview) span over 1,000 acres. “Camp is Girl Scouts’ most transformative experience because girls try new things, push past comfort zones and form lifelong friendships,” King says. Programming immerses girls in traditional activities like archery and swimming; Camp Wildwood focuses on equestrianism. Spending time outdoors boosts girls’ mental and physical well-being. GSWCF’s summer camps help girls grow in their knowledge of conservation and outdoor survival skills. “At our camps, the trees whistle with memories,” King says.
LESSON: Girl Scout Fest
Girl Scout Fest, which occurs Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Florida State Fairgrounds, is open to the public and showcases the Girl Scouts’ four pillars: entrepreneurship, life skills, outdoors and STEM. Complete with an array of interactive activities, Girl Scout Fest is a galvanizing experience.
GIRL SCOUT LAW
I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

The “Magic” of Teaching a Child to Read!
Hillsborough County Public Schools’ New Literacy Curriculum, UFLI
by Laura Cross
When it comes to teaching kids how to read, Kaitlin Behn is an expert. However, despite many years of working hard as an elementary school educator, Behn found that many students still struggled with learning to read.
“What my kids needed was greater than what I was providing,” Behn says. “The literacy curriculum wasn’t cutting it. Then I heard about UFLI and I bought it with my own money. The results were unlike anything I’ve ever seen!”
UFLI (which stands for University of Florida Literacy Institute) is literacy curriculum that was created by the University of Florida for teachers, by teachers and with teachers in mind. UFLI lessons were developed to align with decades of research supporting how students learn to read. The results UFLI is producing are off the charts— which is exactly what Behn was seeing with her own students.
That’s why, when Hillsborough County Public Schools decided to implement UFLI curriculum in all its elementary schools this year, Behn knew she had to help teachers make it a success. Behn is now one of three kindergarten through second grade district literacy coaches whose focus is to go into classrooms and help teachers teach UFLI.
“We have the best teachers in HCPS and they are excited for the future,” says Behn. “How cool will it be when these kindergarten students are in third grade? They will have had a strong foundation of UFLI in kindergarten, first and second! This is going to close gaps and empower students to be lifelong learners.”
There are also ways parents can help strengthen UFLI’s impact. Behn recommends parents ask their child about it. “Ask what their favorite part of UFLI is … I’m sure they have one. And when working on home practice sheets, have your child “teach you” like their teacher teaches them at school. Students have become so automatic with UFLI that they truly can run the show!”
Behn says teaching a child to read is like pure magic, but it’s not something that comes naturally for children. This means that children don’t learn how to read by accident, like the way they learn to walk and talk. It takes explicit phonics instruction and repeated opportunities to apply new concepts to connected text. She says teaching a child to read is hard work for teachers and hard work for students. But when it clicks, it’s amazing!
Seeing the twinkle in a child’s eye when they have ‘that moment;’ when they realize they can do it … Wow! Or, when they don’t want the book to end. It’s sweet, for sure!

Top 5 Reasons Teens and Preteens Should Come to Camp
by Courtney Cairns Pastor
You know your middle school student would have a great time at camp—if they would just give it a try.
Summer camps are packed with fun and low on stress. They offer interesting activities, cool counselors and the chance to hang out with friends or make new ones. A large, established program such as Corbett Prep’s CAMP IDS has hundreds of camps for students of all ages and interests. But to tweens or teens, camp may seem like another obligation chipping away at their vacation time.
Until they realize camp is anything but boring. If you need to convince a reluctant registrant, here are five reasons older kids should make camp part of their summer:
1They can visit fun places without parents chauffeuring.
Your kids can spend a week hopping around Tampa Bay to all sorts of adventures while you work (sigh). Field trip camps will take them to laser tag, skating rinks, baseball games and pools. Or they can choose on-campus recreational camps with shaving cream battles, water balloon fights, Slipn-Slide sports, obstacle courses and tie-dyeing projects—with no cleanup required from parents!
2 Summer camps have cool toys.
Does your home have its own gaga pit? CAMP IDS does! Kids love this crazy dodgeball-style game, but you need a spot for it and enough kids to play. Summer camp dedicated to gaga ball provides them with teammates, plenty of game time and even some work on agility and strategy. Outdoorsy camps provide access to fishing, canoeing and archery. Or you can choose a camp featuring the latest technology and STEM gadgets. Kids can step into virtual and augmented reality, battle Sumo robots, practice digital streaming and build apps under the guidance of experienced counselors.
3
They can cross-train or condition for sports.
Summer camp is a low-stress way to try a new sport or keep up with strength and conditioning to prepare for fall. VAST Sports Performance returns to CAMP IDS every year with a program designed to help kids run faster, jump higher and improve movements in multiple sports. Sportsspecific camps, such as volleyball, basketball, tennis, soccer and baseball, can provide an overview of the basics for students considering joining a team or give extra coaching and practice to kids who want to develop their skills.
4
They can pursue their passions.
Summer camps benefit from hiring counselors with diverse backgrounds as chefs, coders, musicians, coaches, artists and more. Students can tap into their knowledge during a week dedicated solely to what they love. They can audition for a musical, create a comic book, compete as a Master Chef, compose songs, build a massive sculpture, become an entrepreneur, hone babysitting skills or dive into the history of hip hop. And that’s just a start!
5
They can still sleep in. No parent enjoys dragging a cranky teen out of bed. But maybe there is a compromise between busy days and lazy days. A halfday camp that starts at noon lets everyone ease into the day, and the kids are still home in time for fun with family or friends.
Why leave all the fun for the younger kids? Whether it’s one week or an entire summer, camp provides an outlet for preteens and teens to explore their interests in challenging and engaging ways.

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES:
The Role of Community Collaboration to Prevent Child Abuse
by Kalen Graham,
I began my career just over eight years ago as a child welfare case manager, hoping to reunite families that had been separated due to concerns of abuse and neglect. During that time of moving through various roles within the child welfare system, the same theme would re-appear. I began thinking, “What if the families had everything and everyone they needed in their backyard when a family crisis arose?” This is when I began to pay more attention to the concept of community-based care.
WHAT IS COMMUNITY-BASED CARE?
Community-based care refers to the availability of supports and services within the community itself, rather than in more formal settings such as the child welfare system. It emphasizes the importance of shaping resources to meet the unique needs of individuals and families while leveraging existing community strengths.
Community-based care is not just about keeping families together; it’s also about creating stronger, more resilient communities. When families receive the support they need to overcome challenges, children are more likely to succeed in school, stay out of trouble and grow into healthy, productive adults.
THE POWER OF COMMUNITY COLLABORATION
A few years ago, I was introduced to an initiative that embodies the spirit of prevention and the power of community collaboration: the Hillsborough County Community Alliance. The Community Alliance is the voice of unique and vibrant partners throughout Hillsborough County. The Alliance has members that are required by statute; however, it is also comprised of multiple organizations seeking to address the needs of the children and families here in Hillsborough County.
The Community Alliance is responsible for bringing together key stakeholders, local agencies and community members that are dedicated to preventing child abuse and reducing the need for family separation. By addressing the root causes of family instability and fostering firmer community collaboration, the Community Alliance strives to keep families together and ensure that children can grow up in safe and loving homes.
One of the key principles driving the work of the Alliance is the recognition that no single organization or entity can address the complex needs of families in crisis alone. Instead, it takes a coordinated and holistic approach, with each partner contributing their unique expertise and resources. Whether it’s providing access to affordable housing, offering parenting classes or connecting families with mental health services, every effort counts in helping families overcome obstacles and thrive.
I am fortunate enough to work for an organization that understands the importance of investing in prevention and early intervention services which fuels community success—the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. As Community Alliance Coordinator, my position plays a pivotal role in effective communication and education of the community, especially during Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Alliance constantly works to identify evidence-based and data-informed resources to help meet the needs of all children and families throughout the community, as well as ways to share the resources effectively.
CREATING A SAFETY NET
The ideology behind community-based care is simple, and you can help by being a helping hand to a neighbor in need. It's about creating a safety net of services and resources that families can rely on when times get tough. Whether it's a food pantry down the street, a parenting workshop at the community center or a support group for new moms at the local library, community support is all about making sure that no family falls through the cracks.

Spring into Brunch: Fresh Ideas for a Seasonal Spread
by Ginain Grayes @cookprayslay
Spring is the perfect time to embrace the delicious flavors of the season. Hosting brunch happens to be one of my favorite ways to celebrate this time of year. Whether you're planning a laid-back family gathering, a delightful Easter brunch or a chic soiree with friends, these three spring-themed brunch ideas are sure to impress and satisfy all your guests.
Springtime Yogurt Bar
A yogurt bar is a delightful way to start your spring brunch, offering a light, healthy and customizable option that appeals to all ages. Begin with a selection of plain and flavored yogurts, including classic Greek yogurt for a creamy texture and a dairy-free option to ensure everyone can partake. Arrange the yogurts in large bowls, surrounded by smaller bowls filled with a variety of toppings:
FRESH FRUITS:
Think beyond the usual berries. Include seasonal favorites like kiwi, mango and pineapple for a tropical twist.
CRUNCHY TOPPINGS:
Granola, toasted coconut flakes and a mix of nuts (almonds, walnuts, pistachios) add texture and depth.
SWEET DRIZZLES:
Honey, maple syrup and homemade fruit compotes allow guests to sweeten their creations to taste.
Kick it up a notch by decorating your yogurt bar with spring flowers and pastel-colored serving dishes to enhance the seasonal theme.
Refreshing Mimosa Bar
No brunch is complete without mimosas, the signature brunch beverage. Set up a bubbly station with chilled prosecco or champagne and offer a variety of fresh juices beyond the traditional orange. Think pink grapefruit, peach nectar and pomegranate juice for a colorful and refreshing range of options. For an extra touch of elegance, include bowls of fresh berries, sprigs of mint and slices of cucumber to garnish each glass.
Use clear glass pitchers or carafes for the juices so the vibrant colors become part of the decor. Label each option with a pretty tag or chalkboard sign, inviting guests to mix and match their own springtime sips.
A Brunch Charcuterie Board
A brunch charcuterie board combines the elegance of a traditional charcuterie with the comforting favorites of breakfast, creating a feast that's as beautiful as it is delicious. Select a large wooden board as your canvas and begin with an assortment of artisanal cheeses and cured meats. Add in smoked salmon, mini quiches and a selection of fresh, vibrant vegetables like cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers and radishes for a pop of color.
Don't forget the bakery section: freshly baked croissants, scones and breadsticks invite dipping and spreading. Include small bowls of fruit preserves, honey and flavored cream cheeses to round out the flavors. You can even decorate the board with edible flowers and sprigs of fresh herbs for a truly springinspired presentation.
Incorporating these ideas into your spring brunch not only celebrates the season, but also creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that encourages guests to relax, mingle and enjoy the beauty of spring.
