As a father and coach, I trust St. Joseph's Children's Hospital

for the best emergency care. When my daughters suffered serious injuries while speed skating, I made sure they were both treated at the Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Center at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. The nurses and doctors were confident and reassuring, putting my family at ease. Thanks to them, both girls will be skating circles around me for years to come. For that, I’m very grateful.

Angela L. Ardolino Editor-In-Chief

it’s the most wonderful time of the year. The children are going back to school!

David E. Estevez Executive Assistant

All kidding aside, preparing for and starting the new school year can be a hectic time for the entire family. Worrying about transportation to and from various camp programs or how to keep your kids busy all summer will now be replaced with homework, science projects, sporting events and after-school activities. Plus, there will be bedtimes to enforce and curfews to put in place (with some whining, negotiating and nagging to boot).

That being said, it’s important for your child to start well so that school ends well and in this issue, we’ve got lots of information to help you make this a successful academic year.

The frequently used “it takes a village” sentiment often elicits groans but in the case of education, it really does take a village. Students, parents, teachers and administrators are all vital parts of the recipe for success. if everyone involved is not working toward the common goal of instilling children with the knowledge and social skills to thrive in society, the goal won’t be met.

Susan Margolis Marketing Director Todd A. Varde Sales Director

As parents, now is not the time to sit back. Show your child that education is important by getting involved at your child’s school and at home. Donate your time or needed supplies. Attend the open house and other programs. review lessons with your child and check homework for accuracy.

Cathy Munch Account Executive

The start of school can be a nostalgic time, too. Seeing your kindergartener off for the first day of school can be more emotional for you than him. For that matter, the start of your daughter’s senior year can be just as heart-wrenching. They really do grow up too fast.

Nicole Puglisi Sales & Special Events Krayl Funch Sales & Marketing Assistant

Now, it’s time to let go of your child’s hand and let the teacher take it from here. And wipe away those tears. He’ll be home before you know it.

I

t’s back-to-school time and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the shopping you have to do, especially if you want to be ecofriendly.

you needn’t worry. Companies like TerraCycle are making back-to-school shopping and green living compatible and easy. Founded in 2001 by Tom Szaky, then a freshman at Princeton University, TerraCycle helps keep the planet clean by making products from what most people think of as trash. The materials that TerraCycle uses are nonrecyclable, which means they would sit in a landfill forever. in 2007, TerraCycle began fundraising brigades. The free program for companies that want to be green boasts more than 60,000 locations and 7 million people who participate. The idea is to mail in items that cannot be recycled, such as Capri Sun pouches, and make them into useful tools.

Send the kids off to school with a lunch box made from recycled Capri Sun packages, a BPA-free Contigo travel bottle and a Born Free BPA-free food container. Make sure to give them healthy snacks like these glutenfree ones from Kinnick Kinnick .

TerraCycle pays for the postage and pays 2 cents to a charity of the participants’ choosing for returning these items. TerraCycle has collected 1.75 billion units of nonrecyclable material from participating companies such as Colgate, ziploc, Neosporin, Aveeno, Oscar Mayer Lunchables and Promise, among others. From the materials, TerraCycle makes backpacks, lunch boxes, pencil/pen bags and other supplies that children can use in school. But keeping the planet clean isn’t just about companies. Families and individuals can participate in brigades as well. you can even choose a school to receive the donations from TerraCycle. if you’re not interested in joining a brigade, the cool school supplies are a wonderful way to help the environment. Visit www.terracycle.net to learn more.

Shopping Green Going green is hip and stylish but it’s not a fad we should let fade away. Be proud of working to make the world a better place to live and your kids will be, too. There are several ways to keep green as you get your child ready for school. reuse materials from the previous school year that are still in good condition. Buy eco-friendly backpacks that are PVC-free and made from recycled materials. Look for soybean crayons, recycled pencils and tree-free notebooks. Visit thrift and consignment shops to look for gently-used clothing. you also can trade clothes at stores such as Plato’s Closet. Look for stainless steel lunch boxes or ones made from recycled materials.

recipe for success

a pInCH OF tHIs, sprInkle OF tHat equal a great sCHOOl year

....................... Mark Heller

Ingredients 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Student, any age Parents, two or more Talented teachers, Administrators/School Leadership Curriculum School

Combine the student and the school. Blend in healthy doses of curriculum, teachers and administrators. Be sure to sift in frequent and honest communication between parents, teachers and administrators. Knead in good and bad information. Do not simmer. Remain open and flexible. Keep the temperature from getting too hot or too cold for about 10 months and voila−a great school year.

Parents All schools encounter and serve a broad range of parents absent, involved and over-involved. if you are reading this article, it’s not very likely that you will fall into the first category. Most likely, you fall into the middle category, which does a fine job of being involved and aware, questioning when necessary, remaining polite and praising great teaching, guidance and problem-solving when appropriate. if, however, you fall into the third category, please consider that parental over-involvement can have a negative impact on your child’s ability to cope with the challenges that will arise later in life. Allowing children to fail, whether it is something minor such as a poor grade or something potentially more significant such as a bad choice, results in a valuable learning opportunity that all children must experience.

Teachers The teachers who are most successful are those who teach students, not merely subjects. To be highly effective, teachers must build relationships with their students. This requires an investment of time. Great teachers always have time for students. They understand that they must strive to reach the individuals in front of them. Those who teach to where the class should be often miss the mark by failing to connect to the class where it is. Teaching every individual is extremely hard but very necessary. The best teachers have a passion for what they teach and whom they teach.

Curriculum This is the ingredient that has probably the least variability upon first glance. What students learn in English, mathematics, science, etc. is not widely different between schools. Where differences exist is the ways content is presented and, most importantly, how children learn to deal with each other, the adults in their community and the world. This often is often called the hidden curriculum and it varies tremendously from school to school. A school’s choices in its hidden curriculum can become deeply imbedded in the school’s culture and that culture is crucial in shaping your child. Do the children in your child’s school, particularly middle and high school, regard adults as the enemy or as sources of guidance and assistance on the path to adulthood? Does your school provide meaningful opportunities for children to grow in important ways through experiences in athletics and the arts as well as leadership opportunities? How does the school community deal with both success and adversity?

Administrators/School Leaders Administrators need great ears and eyes to cultivate a genuine openness with parents. Sometimes that’s difficult because of the heat of the moment, but i have always been influenced by a wise colleague who taught me that “Every parent is only as happy as their least happy child.” This adage reminds me of the place parents typically are coming from when they lodge a complaint or question an action. it helps me to help everyone in the situation move forward when i can validate the feelings that have risen to the surface. Great administrator eyes are for developing and communicating a vision of what school can and should be. The leaders who have vision and who effectively articulate that vision create a positive culture and community.

School The abiding culture of every school is crucial to every student’s and every family’s experience. Students and their families thrive when school is a place:

• Where you are known and valued • Where adults have time for you • Where trust is built and evidenced in countless daily interactions • Where adults model the virtues we hope to instill in our students

As parents, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to both seek and shape the best possible environments for our children. i hope this exploration of the ingredients necessary for a positive educational experience helps you provide the very best for your children. Have a great school year. The

Cambridge Christian School Experience A school is the stories of its people. This is one of those stories.

”Our investment in our children’s education at Cambridge did not turn out as planned. We were looking for just a good academic school to put our kids in and instead they were educated in ‘Life’. They were well prepared for college life academically, personally and spiritually. My two grandchildren will be starting at Cambridge in the next few years. I know they too will be educated in ‘Life’. That’s what I call a return on investment.” Jake Beckel, CEO, AnazaoHealth

moving on up

B

ack to school means more than back to the books. it also means lifestyle changes as kids get back to fixed schedules and, for some, this year’s transition will include a move not only to a new grade but also to a new school environment.

Good Start

For the little ones heading from day care to prekindergarten or kindergarten, parents should be prepared for excitement, anticipation, anxiety and apprehension. One of the best ways to help your 4-, 5- or 6-yearold adjust is to let him know what to expect. Visiting the school to tour the grounds, meet the teacher and even try out the playground can ease the fear and anxiety of the unknown. Going shopping for school supplies together and allowing the child to be involved is another great way to lower anxiety and build excitement.

The Middle

The transition from elementary to middle school can be daunting. Middle schoolers typically face a larger campus with more students and different teachers for each subject. For many tweens, classes are more challenging and homework demands significantly increase with more projects and formal research. All of these academic changes can be tough enough. Add the social changes, as students try to figure out where they fit in and whether they will be accepted, and you have a recipe for mayhem. There are proven strategies you can use to help your tweens successfully make this transition. Children who engage in sports or other structured group activities such as religious youth groups or scouts struggle less with fitting in and have a greater sense of belonging, according to a wealth of research. Just being there for your child also is important. Successful teens are often those who have at least one adult in their lives whom they consider to be a confidant. These youngsters also have adults who set reasonably high expectations for them and encourage follow through. As your tween navigates a new world of academics and social interactions, they also are experiencing physical changes as they enter puberty. Boys who mature early and display strong athletic skills tend to be more

socially accepted, whereas girls who mature early sometimes struggle socially. As a parent, you might feel just as lost as your tween in dealing with this time of significant physical, emotional and cognitive changes, but you can help them muddle through the middle. Offer compassion and support as your child moves through this seemingly uncharted territory. Assure your child that her peers are struggling with similar issues. Helping your tween develop their organizational skills can help, too. Parents can discuss plans for the day at the breakfast table and talk through how to approach the day’s duties. Developing an overall plan for the day, week, month and year with a calendar also can help your child get organized. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Seek out tutors or older students who can share tips with your child on managing the demands of middle school.

Cap and Gown Bound

The students who ruled the middle are now the new kids on the block – freshmen. By now, most have some experience with transitions, although they are likely to continue to feel some combination of excitement and anxiety. At this stage, everything seems to get bigger and bigger doesn’t always mean better. The changes can be overwhelming. High schools are often situated on larger campuses with more students in each class, harder subjects and more homework. Many high schoolers begin to distance themselves from their parents as they search for their identity and sense of self. They have a strong need to belong as well as to be an individual. High school students often think, and even say, that they would be fine if only their parents would leave them alone. Don’t be fooled. Although teens want to find themselves, they also want, expect and need their parents’ guidance and involvement. Teens also are apt to take more risks than their younger counterparts. Many parents ask how their smart child could engage in such risky behaviors. This is largely due to their still developing brains that are full of lots of ideas but only limited brakes and judgment. Additionally, high schoolers are likely to be strongly influenced by peer group values and opinions. During this time, it is important for parents to establish and communicate their

standards, but to keep lectures short, sweet and to the point. Parents should be sure to listen, praise and avoid criticism. remember that your teen is straddling the line between childhood and young adulthood and it is important to create a structured routine at the start of the school year. Parents should learn school rules and policies as well as homework expectations and discuss them with their child. it’s still important for parents to remain involved in school events, volunteering and attending functions. Knowing your child’s friends and teachers also is key to a child’s successful management of these challenging years. Licensed psychologist Wendy Rice has practiced in Tampa nearly 10 years, providing psychotherapy for children and adolescents struggling with emotional, behavioral, friendship, family and learning difficulties. avoiding the pitfalls CHIlDren tODay FaCe

B

Kids today face many issues – bullying, online predators, prescription drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders. Some of these are typical pitfalls of youth but many are particular to today’s youth. The world is a very different place, thanks in large part to technology. “The lives of today’s youth are more complicated than ever, regardless of what walk of life they come from” says Amy Foster, director of girl and adult leadership development for the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida. Though it’s not always easy to discuss these issues with children, parents need to know how to educate and protect children from the risks they face on a daily basis. According to a study released by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, between 1992 and 2003, prescription drug abuse increased by 94 percent. During that same period, the report found a 212 percent increase in the number of kids ages 12 to 17 who abuse prescription drugs. The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion reports that while the use of illicit drugs, such as marijuana and cocaine, has declined among youth in the past 10 years, the recreational use of prescription and overthe-counter drugs remains high. An astounding 55 percent of teens don’t think that using cough medicine to get high is risky. The CDC also reports that alcohol is used by more young people in the U.S. than tobacco or illicit drugs, with 24 percent of high school students reporting episodic heavy or binge drinking in 2009.

CHallenges

Prescription drug and alcohol abuse are becoming an epidemic with our children and they’re quite good at hiding it from the adults in their lives. Sexting, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, AiM, youTube − many of us know about these online social networking sites and are active on them, but they can still seem intimidating at times. Today’s kids are “digital natives” and as a parent you must be aware of the digital dangers lurking in cyberspace. you should sit down with your child to talk about online safety when they begin going on the internet.

knowing someone their age who has forced herself to throw up after eating, while more than a third (37 percent) say they know someone their age who has been diagnosed with an eating disorder. Twentyfive percent say it’s acceptable for girls their age to take appetite suppressants and/or weight-loss pills. Plus, nearly one in five consider plastic surgery and/ or weight-loss surgery acceptable. To combat the issue, Girl Scouts of the USA advocates for healthier media images through the Healthy Media for youth Act (H.r. 4925), currently before Congress.

Unfortunately, bullying is nothing new, but the ways in which bullying occurs are changing. From physical to cyber to text, bullying is something we as a community need to combat.

So, what can parents do?

Girl Scout Dominique Napolitano testified before the U.S. House of representatives Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee on the issue of cyberbullying this summer, providing legislators a teenager’s perspective on the practice.

• When signing your children up for programs or activities in the community, ask the program provider if they have a plan to address youth issues such as bullying – even if it has nothing to do with the activity topic.

“Cyberbullying is not just a phase or behavior in which kids will be kids,” Napolitano told the panel. “Cyberbullying poses serious consequences to the health and safety of all children.”

• Talk to your children. It’s important that they know you want to be a part of their lives.

Self-perception of body image continues to be an issue among girls and the media plays a key role in those insecurities. “Beauty redefined,” a national survey recently released by Girl Scouts of the USA, found that nearly one in three girls say they have starved themselves or refused to eat in an effort to lose weight. in addition, 42 percent report

• Look for organizations in your area that offer training to help you address youth issues.

The Girl Scouts of West Central Florida offers specialized training on youth issues and serves nearly 24,000 girls in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sumter counties. Mouth guards not only protect teeth, they soften blows that cause concussion, neck injury, and jaw fractures. Any sport can benefit from a mouth guard, even baseball and basketball.

ot fun in the summertime is a Florida tradition but it’s also a dangerous time for children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 465 U.S. children died from heat stroke from 1998-2009 after being left inside a car. Even the most diligent parents mistakenly think they can leave a child in a vehicle for a quick errand. However, with an outside temperature of 85 degrees, the air temperature inside a parked vehicle can reach a dangerous 120 degrees within 30 minutes, and nearly 150 degrees after a few hours. “When left in a hot vehicle, a child’s core body temperature may increase three to five times faster than that of an adult, leading to seizures, multiple organ failure or even death in minutes,” says Dr. Maximo Luque, a pediatrician at St. Joseph’s Children’s Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Center. “And when substituting humid heat for dry heat, as is often the case in Florida, injury or death can occur in half the time.”

children’s reach. Contact emergency services if you see a small child who is unattended in a motor vehicle and in need of help. Make sure all children leave the vehicle upon arrival at a destination. Be especially careful if transporting children on a specific day or time that is not part of your normal routine. in the case of infants that may be sleeping, get into the habit of placing a reminder where you’ll be sure to see it before leaving your vehicle. For example, place the diaper bag next to you or leave your purse, briefcase or lunch in the back next to the child’s seat. Set your e-mail calendar or cell phone alarm to remind you that the baby should be at child care. Many tragedies have occurred because a caregiver drove to work instead of stopping at day care. visit www.stjosephschildrens.com for more information on how to keep kids safe in and around vehicles.

To help prevent heat stroke injury or fatalities, Dr. Luque has some tips. Never leave a child unattended in a motor vehicle, even with a window slightly open. Teach children not to play in, on or around vehicles. Always lock your vehicle’s doors and trunk – especially at home – and keep keys out of

odessa Teen earns eagle scout award Victor Karstendiek of Odessa recently earned his Eagle Scout award, becoming one of only a few fourthgeneration Eagle Scouts and following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather. The 14-year-old Tampa Bay Tech Magnate Architecture Academy student also is a scholar and athlete. He is an honor roll student and serves on the varsity cross country team, USA Triathlon youth Series and Top Triathletes (ages 15 and younger). As part of his quest to earn Eagle Scout distinction, Victor collaborated with Born Again to ride Ministry, the Hillsborough Homeless Coalition, and others to rally volunteers for the distribution of $6,000 worth of Urban Survival Kits to 75 homeless people in North Tampa during a four-month Victor Karstendiek receives his award from fellow Eagle period. The concept was hatched when Victor Scout and grandfather “Pepper” Karstendiek. developed a project to provide assistance to Bay area homeless by reaching out to local organizations, which resulted in the coordination of activities for more than 50 organizations and hundreds of volunteers. The project also earned Victor a nomination for the Good Samaritan Medal, the United Methodist Church’s highest youth honor.

It’s a family affair at volvo of Tampa Danny O’Malley has driven or ridden in every model of Volvo produced since 1986, the year that his father became a Volvo dealer. “i remember sitting in the backseat of my parents’ Volvo as a kid going to and from sports practices,” says O’Malley. “i grew up with it. Volvo is in my blood.” So when the opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps came along, O’Malley jumped at the chance. in Nov. 2009, he purchased Volvo of Tampa, 6008 N. Dale Mabry Highway, and is rediscovering his early passion for Volvo. “i thought it was fitting for me, the family guy with a beautiful wife, two young children and one more on the way to become a Volvo dealer and be able to sell a product that i believe in so much,” he says. O’Malley also says that Volvo’s latest designs offer a sleek look and cutting edge technology that enable drivers to have the luxury they’re seeking without sacrificing security or precision.

Volvo of Tampa owner Danny O’ Malley, with wife Jennifer, son Trey and daughter Reese, is a longtime fan of the cars.

“Safety and practicality is what Volvo has excelled at for 85 years,” he says. it was “the first car manufacturer to install three-point seat belt, side impact airbags, collapsible absorbent crumple zones and the collapsible steering wheel. The list goes on and on with their safety inventions. That’s why their slogan is Volvo for Life.”

Tampa students earn Kudos at national science Competition A team of Tampa inventors recently took second place at the 18th Annual Toshiba/ National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards.

From left, Sophia Nobles, Kristen Holmes and Grace Nobles present their project at the 2010 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Science Showcase.

Grace Nobles, Kristen Holmes and Sophia Nobles, students at Tampa Christian Community School students, were honored for having one of the most innovative entries, qualifying them to compete for a national title.

The ExploraVision program is designed to inspire future scientists and inventors from kindergarten to 12th grade to envision new technologies that could make the future safer, healthier and more eco-friendly. With the support of coach Jodi Mitchell, the Tampa students developed the Smart Touch First Aid Kit. This virtual “doctor-in-a-box” would provide specialized treatment for injuries and emergencies by packaging medical supplies, instructions and communication devices in one kit. Touch screen technology, GPS capabilities, wireless internet access and cell phone components would be used to identify the injury, activate video treatment instructions, connect the caregiver with trained medical or emergency staff via videoconferencing and even provide directions to the nearest hospital.

rays Pitcher and wife open suite to Bay area Kids Eckerd youth Alternatives has teamed up with Tampa Bay rays pitcher James Shields and his wife ryane to create an exclusive club for foster children. The Big Game James Club is designed to help promote a sense of stability and belonging in the lives of local foster children served by Eckerd Community Alternatives, 100 Starcrest Drive, Clearwater. “ryane and i feel privileged to be able to give back to a community that has been so good to us,” Shields says. “We would also like to thank Eckerd youth Alternatives for their role in helping make this a reality for us and for the kids.” About 50 foster kids will participate in the Big Game James Club, attending a series of games in a specially-decorated suite donated by the Tampa Bay rays and Shields family. As part of the club experience, the kids will participate in baseball-themed activities and receive special credentials, ball caps and other rays’ merchandise. They also will receive a memory book for photos and other memorabilia to commemorate their club experiences. “We are excited for this opportunity for our children who have been traumatized by abuse or neglect. Because of their situations, they’ve been robbed of their childhood and have had to grow up quickly,” says David Dennis, president and CEO of Eckerd youth Alternatives, the nonprofit organization that oversees the local foster care system. “The Big Game James Club is a place where they can experience a sense of stability and belonging. it’s a place where they can have fun, cheer for the rays and just be kids.”

lovable lamb, Creator strive to Inspire Spreading the happy and not the cranky has become Tarpon Springs artist D. Byron Patterson’s mission. Through his lovable cartoon character Lamby, he has spent three years making children (and their parents) laugh with whimsical songs, drawings, poems, short stories and parodies that he posts for free on Lamby’s Facebook page as well as his website and blog, www. lambpants.com and www.loveandfleece.com. Lamby is a disabled cartoon lamb donning cuffed blue pants and a bottle-cap eye patch. But his disability has not taken away his steadfast heart and bold spirit, and even contributes to the sassiness that makes this lamb so memorable. “The last thing i want is to talk down to kids and tell them what’s good for them−kids are way too smart for that,” says Patterson. “Lamby is the silly wrapper for a message he likes to calls Love and Fleece on Earth: when you start being nice to yourself, you can be nice to others by spreading the happy and not the cranky. “Life is tough to manage without having the right tools--for mind, body, heart and spirit,” Patterson adds. “While Lamby on the surface appears to be just another cartoon, he is fearless and imperfect and still retains his sense of wonder and innocence.”

safe Kids Coalition Honors Moms, students More than 200 guests recently attended the annual Florida Suncoast Safe Kids luncheon at the All Children’s Education and Conference Center. The event saluted Safe Kids members as All Children’s “most valuable players” in preventing unintentional injuries. This year’s event recognized four outstanding individuals for their efforts to keep kids safe: Guiga Vieira, a mom who started a walking school bus in Pasco County; Stacy Cummings, a mother whose son was involved in a near drowning and who now serves as a Safe Kids spokesperson for pool safety; William Koshedub-Colaco, a 10-year old who helped save a life by administrating CPr; and Sara Becont, a second grader who promotes the importance of wearing a helmet when riding her bike. Sister Earth and students from Curlew Creek Elementary performed an original safety song to close the event.

retiring Coalition member Lou Jorden of the Polk County Safe Kids Council was given special recognition, while All Children’s and Safe Kids presented the Children’s Burn Foundation with a check to support its burn camps for kids.

local visionary seeks Your vote Olga Bof of St. Petersburg recently learned that she will have the chance to compete for a $50,000 grant in the August round of the Pepsi refresh Project. Thousands apply to enter the competition each month, but Bof’s creative vision of a bright, colorful community bookstore to support her mission of instilling children with a lifelong love for reading has made its way into the competition. Now Bof is asking her community to support her vision of the ideal children’s bookstore, Cheeky Monkeys Books and Toys, in hopes of opening the bookstore in downtown St. Petersburg this fall.

Olga Bof is competing in the Pepsi Refresh Project.

Bof’s Cheeky Monkeys will be competing in the “Neighborhoods” category for the $50,000 grant, which represents about one-third of what is needed for the store’s startup funds.

“We will feature a collection of items by local artists, and our dynamic calendar of events will go beyond just storytime and author readings by including classes and activities such as art, crafts, music, language and more,” she says. visitors can vote for Cheeky Monkeys from august 1-31. visit www.facebook.com/ cheekymonkeysbooks for voting details and a link to Bof ’s Pepsi refresh Project page.

show Palace Brings the ’70s to life return to the time of bell bottoms and disco courtesy of Boogie Wonderland: The Music of the ’70s, the Show Palace Dinner Theatre’s new, original musical revue, highlighting one of the most colorful decades in fads, fashions and music.

The Show Palace’s Boogie Wonderland transports audiences to the ’70s.

Filled with pop hits and tributes to classic commercials and variety shows of the era, the show stars Sara DelBeato, Scott Daniel and Lauren Gemelli as an intrepid crew of space travelers who crash land on a strange planet that resembles a discotheque, complete with mirror balls, dry ice and moon rock dance platforms. As the travelers explore this new world, they soon discover that here disco is king and every night marks an occasion to celebrate.

“We are so excited to share this new jukebox show with our audiences,” says Nick Sessa, executive producer. “Our staff has created so many great salutes to popular music over the years. We hope this one proves as popular as our past tributes to the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s.” Boogie Wonderland will run through Aug. 22 at the theater, 16128 U.S. 19, Hudson. Doors open two hours before each show for dinner and cocktails. Tickets are $48, plus tax, for dinner and a show. Show only is $36.95, plus tax. Call 727-863-7949 or 888-655-7469 or visit www.showpalace.net for information.

Health Center Celebrates anniversary Premier Community Healthcare Group inc. recently celebrated its first anniversary at its New Port richey Center, 6636 Forest Ave., inviting visitors to join the staff for cake and a tour of the facility. PCHG, mainly in Dade City and zephyrhills, has been serving the Pasco County area for more than 30 years and was one of 126 health centers to receive American recovery and reinvestment Act funding for a new site.

The staff at Premier’s Center in New Port Richey marked a succesful first year.

“Everyone should have the ability to choose their medical home, and community health centers offer just that option,” says CEO Kim Schuknecht. “We provide high-quality services that emphasize primary care and wellness so families can stay healthy and out of hospitals.”
