Tampa Bay’s Choice for Kids “A week later she was back to herself.”
When Mia was 4 years old, one of her kidneys was functioning at just 23 percent. The urologist recommended robotic surgery, which is only available at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, to help Mia heal more quickly and experience less scarring than with traditional surgery. Mia’s family was impressed with the exceptional care they received. “We would definitely recommend St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital to anybody who needs surgery or emergency care.” The board-certified surgeons at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital have been specially trained to perform robotic, minimally invasive and traditional surgical procedures for a variety of medical conditions in a familyfriendly environment.
Should your child ever need surgery, choose St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. For a physician referral:

And we’re back!
Hopefully, you and your family have been able to enjoy some down time before the upcoming school year. With lots to do and not much time to do it, we’re helping you get ready and inspired! Starting strong and with lots of energy will set the tone for the entire school year. On page 10, Mark Heller discusses how parents, teachers and administrators can work together to ensure students have a rewarding academic year. Get a head start on your shopping list. We’ve compiled some great products for you and the kids to try on page 14.
Me with Lindsay, Cla ra and Molly, cele brating Fourth of July in the lake.
Back to school also means back to practice. Many kids will be hitting the field after school. Keeping them safe is at the forefront of every parent’s and coach’s mind. Besides the fact that it is dangerous, many parents know little about concussions and how to determine whether their child has suffered one. Pediatric neurosurgeon Sarah Gaskill offers insight on the signs and symptoms on page 20. Continuing our theme of education, we are featuring Jana Radtke on page 36 as an Extraordinary Woman. Having devoted more than 18 years of her life to child care and education, this native Texan strives to inspire teachers, students and parents to reach for the stars. i’m so happy to announce that this year’s Back to School Fair will be presented by Woodmont Charter School. With their support, we’re going to bring you the biggest and best fair to date. So make sure to mark your calendars for Aug. 10. We’ll be at the Glazer Children’s Museum in downtown Tampa from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We also want to thank some of our other partners and sponsors, including The Goddard School, GTE Financial, Coast Dental, Verizon, The Tampa Tribune, KinderCare Learning Centers, Mix 100.7, 103.5 and ABC Action news. Visit www. BackToSchoolFair.com for more information. Don’t forget the first 150 kids will get a goodie bag filled with school supplies, samples, coupons and more. See you on Aug. 10!
We love to hear from you. Don’t forget to become a fan on Facebook and get daily updates, enter contests, share pictures and chat with other families. You can check us out at TBParenting.com, too, or follow us on Twitter @tbparenting.

he start of school always has a special excitement about it – a sense of possibility and optimism that is both powerful and meaningful. As children head back to school, I encourage you to reflect on the partnership between your child’s school and you.
A true partnership requires parents, teachers and administrators to focus on building relationships with each other. These relationships include openness, communication and plenty of listening. When these relationships thrive, your child will benefit greatly. in partnership with families, your school should:
B
alance academics, athletics and fine arts. Balance serves students well. it is a key ingredient to healthy growth.
I
nsist on first rate preparation in character development. The timeless values of integrity, responsibility, the power of work, and the power of compassion will never go out of style.
P
rovide opportunities to grow, stretch and be important to the community. The engagement that comes from participation in the community provides critical lessons that will inform a life well-lived.
F
ocus on learning for the 21st century. Moving from the standardized one-size-fits-all assembly-line model of the past century to a more customized approach will build the skill sets that are demanded today.
E
mbrace and welcome diversity as a tool to enrich the community and as a canvas for lessons about perspective, creativity, and innovation. innovation and creativity are stimulated when individuals develop their own particular spheres of expertise and then carry those spheres into meaningful interaction with others and their respective spheres. instilling in students not only respect for diversity but also the ability to understand others and their differing perspectives amounts to great social and academic preparation.
B
uild confidence in each student. Schools build confidence through fostering a positive “lift you up” kind of culture, a culture that is clear about expectations and boundaries, that provides both opportunities and support, and that puts your child’s experience at the center of all decision-making. Confidence is truly the greatest gift we can give to our children. Have a great school year! Mark Heller is head of school at Academy at the Lakes, a PK3 – 12th grade independent school that serves families from Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, and Hernando counties. or some, the term concussion conjures an image of an athlete knocked unconscious on the field. But concussions can happen in a variety of ways and often without any loss of consciousness. in fact, of the thousands of children diagnosed with concussions each year, only half are sportsrelated. Sometimes called a mild traumatic brain injury, a concussion occurs when a direct blow to the head or body causes the soft tissue of the brain to knock against the skull’s bony surface. Whether they are mild or severe, all concussions can harm the way the brain works. injuries from motor vehicle crashes, falls, bike accidents and sports are common causes. According to Dr. Sarah Gaskill, a pediatric neurosurgeon at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, signs of a concussion can develop immediately after an injury or may not appear until days or even weeks later. The most common symptoms are: • • • • • •
Headache Nausea and vomiting Changes in vision or hearing Dizziness Sensitivity to light and sound Feeling sluggish or lethargic
• • • • • • • • • • •
Sleeping more or less than usual Difficulty falling asleep Trouble remembering events right before or after injury Difficulty concentrating Forgetfulness Confusion More emotional Irritability Sadness or depression Nervousness or anxiety Defiant
“Concussions can have a more serious effect on a developing brain and need to be addressed correctly, Dr. Gaskill notes. “if you suspect your child has a concussion, it’s important to seek medical attention.” in addition to a physician exam, your child’s physician will likely perform neurocognitive tests that determine how well the brain is functioning. Be sure to call 911 if your child loses consciousness after a head injury or experiences seizures, bloody or clear fluid from ears/nose, bruising under the eyes or behind the ears, slurred speech, repeated vomiting or inability to recognize people or places. initial treatment for a concussion is rest, both mental and physical, to allow the brain time to heal. if your child has a concussion, activities
that exert the brain or body, including homework, driving, parties and computer use, should be avoided until your physician says it is safe. “i often tell parents, ‘if your child isn’t bored after a concussion, you’re not doing your job,’ ” says Dr. Gaskill. Besides making symptoms worse, Dr. Gaskill warns that too much physical and mental exertion may place your child at risk for a second concussion. “Having another concussion before your child has fully recovered from the first one is dangerous. The second injury, even a minor one, can cause brain swelling that increases the chances for paralysis, permanent brain damage or even death.” To decrease your child’s chance for developing a concussion, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital suggests: • Use child safety seats and seat belts. Car crashes are a major cause of concussion and other brain injuries for children. When riding in motor vehicles, all occupants should use age-appropriate restraints such as child safety seats, booster seats and seat belts. • Require helmet use whenever children ride bikes, skates, scooters or participate in other wheeled activities. Helmet use not only reduces the risk of concussions it also reduces continued on page 22

risk for severe brain injury by 88 percent. Enforce a simple rule – wear a helmet or don’t ride! Adults should model proper behavior by wearing a helmet too. • Ensure children follow their coach’s rules for safety and the rules of the sport. Encourage them to practice good sportsmanship at all times. Make sure they wear the right protective equipment for their activity. Protective equipment should fit properly, be wellmaintained and worn consistently and correctly. • If a sport-related concussion occurs, remove the child from the activity and do not return to play until instructed by a medical professional familiar with concussion management. Statistics show that young athletes with a history of concussion are six times more likely to have another concussion. While most children recover soon, a small percentage may have lingering effects for months to a year later. Be sure to discuss any concern you have regarding your child’s recovery with your physician. For more information on keeping your kids safe and healthy, visit facebook.com/stjosephschildrens.

ummer is in full-swing, which for many families means more time outside and on vacation. i love being outside with my family, but after yet another round of surgery to remove basal cell carcinomas from my face, i know how important it is to protect your skin from the sun. Even more importantly, we need teach our kids what i didn’t know growing up — use sunscreen!
which of course caused the lotion to drip down their cheeks! now i need to reapply the sunscreen since their tears may have washed the first lathering away. Ugh! not again!
can see them. i’ve learned to think of them as little reminders to be careful in the sun. Even on cloudy days and during the cooler months, we all wear sunscreen.
A few times my children’s eyes got poked because they wouldn’t stop shaking their heads back and forth! Then there were the games of chase me around the living room and catch me if you can! One time my son asked, “Do we have to put on Let me add that my mom was not neglecting me. sunscreen to go to the park? if we do, i don’t want She simply didn’t know then what we know now. to go!” Studies now show that all it takes is one blistering sunburn to dramatically increase your chances With the magnificent invention of sunscreen of skin cancer. That would have been shocking spray, things got a whole lot easier! Our kids would news when i was growing up. it was a culture giggle (instead of crying) over how cold the spray of sunbathing and working on your tan! As a felt on their skin. Getting the sunscreen lotion on teenager in South Florida, i embraced that culture! their faces always took some convincing. Still does. There were days when my family just lost track of time during outings. i recall that we packed a Over the years, the kids have seen me go through picnic and enjoyed the beach all afternoon. My husband and i didn’t we came home, my skin was bright pink and felt want to scare the kids, but they were curious hot. i remember how cold the air conditioning felt when they saw my bandages. We told them the as i came inside and crawled into my bed looking truth on a level they could understand. Why i had for relief. i shivered under my covers for most of the surgery, why i had to wear the bandages and the night. it was a blistering, peeling sunburn on why mommy had scars — because i didn’t wear my face and torso. it’s that sunburn that comes to sunscreen. mind each time i receive the diagnosis of basal cell carcinomas. i’m happy to say our children have started to make the connection and understand why mommy and now, as the mom of a 5-year-old son and 3-year- daddy are so strict about sunscreen. Scars can be old daughter, i absolutely enjoy the struggle of covered with makeup, but there’s no covering my getting sunscreen on my children! (Hear the fear of skin cancer. We don’t want our children to sarcasm?) Putting sunscreen on my children a few go through what i have gone through. years ago was like wrestling a pig in a puddle of mud! i’d lay my babies down only to have them Today, only small scars remain. When i am home wiggle and flip over! That was followed by tears, with my family, i don’t wear makeup and they
in the spirit of full mommy disclosure, the truth is our kids still don’t like to put on sunscreen and we don’t always apply the sunscreen perfectly. Recently, i made the mistake of reapplying sunscreen too close to the time my son went back in the water. it didn’t have a chance to sink in. Later that night he said, “Mom, my back hurts and kinda itches.” i looked at the minor sunburn (his first), which turned into patches of dry, flaky skin a few days later. it makes me cringe and i feel so guilty for letting them down. i try to remind myself that we are doing the best we can. My husband recently took my son to buy swim trunks with matching swim shirts with built in SPF! That’s right! They provide the equivalent of SPF 50! We’re still in negotiations with our daughter. The feminine swimsuits still have the upper hand with her! Here’s the good news. The kids don’t fight the lathering up like they used to last summer. They know it’s important. My daughter recently said, “you are putting this on so i don’t get boo boos on my face.” yes! On another outing my son said, “you didn’t use sunscreen when you were a kid and that’s why you had to have doctors fix your skin.” yes! i am so glad our children are learning from my mistakes. if only more of life’s lessons could be learned so painlessly! kin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. More than 3.5 million cases are diagnosed each year. The American Cancer Society’s awareness campaign, Slip, Slop, Slap & Wrap, is a fun way to talk to your children about sun protection.
Slip on a shirt.
Some clothes give more protection than others. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, or long skirts are the best. Dark colors are better than light colors. A tightly woven fabric protects better than loosely woven clothing. if you can see light through a fabric, UV rays can get through, too. Dry fabric is most often better than wet fabric.
Slop on sunscreen.
Use sunscreen and lip balm. Broad spectrum products (which protect against different types of UV rays) with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more are recommended. Be sure to use enough (a palmful) and put it on again every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating. Use sunscreen even on hazy or days with light or broken cloud cover because UV rays still come through.
Slap on a hat.
A hat with at least a 2- to 3-inch brim all around is best because it protects areas often exposed to the sun, such as the neck, ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp. A shade cap (which looks like a baseball cap with about 7 inches of fabric draping down the sides and back) also is good.
Wrap on sunglasses.
Wrap-around sunglasses that absorb at least 99% of the UV rays help protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes. American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org

What’s Happening
Back to School Fair
After a summer of relaxation (for some), it’s going to be tough to shake off the laid-back lifestyle and get back into super parent mode. Luckily for parents all over the Tampa Bay area, we have just what you need to get back in the swing of things. The Back to School Fair, presented by Woodmont Charter School, is a day to prepare, protect, educate and inspire children for the upcoming school year! This annual event, set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 10, will feature live entertainment, informational sessions, karaoke, games, arts and crafts, face painting, balloon artist, workshops and a whole bunch of fun! The 2013 event will take place inside the state of the art Glazer Children’s Museum located in downtown Tampa. Fairgoers will enjoy the entire museum and fair for only $5 per person. The first 150 kids will receive a tote bag filled with back-to-school supplies and other goodies. Museum members enjoy free admission! Visit www.BacktoSchoolFair.com to learn more.
Tax-Free School Supplies
Back-to-school season is upon us and that means moms and dads will be heading to the store to stock up on all the necessary supplies. The three-day sales tax holiday is Aug. 2-4. On those days, no state or local option tax will be collected on sales of clothing, footwear and certain accessories costing $75 or less. School supplies selling for $15 or less will be exempt as well. Visit www.myflorida.com for more information or for a complete list of tax-exempt items.
Dinosaur World
To celebrate 15 years of prehistoric adventures, Dinosaur World is launching new exhibits and activities, including up-close encounters with 15-foot mammoths, an expanded education center and the opportunity to dig for precious gemstones. At over 5,000 square feet, Mammoth: Giants of the Ice Age provides a snapshot of a migration pod of the giant creatures. Known to roam in many areas across the world, including North America, numerous subspecies of mammoths lived throughout the ice age. Don’t forget to swing by Dino Gem Excavation, where kids can pan for gold, arrowheads and rubies. Visit www.dinosaurworld.com to learn more.

Extraordinary woman
.......................................
By angela arDOlInO
Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.
Relocating to Tampa from Dallas almost 15 years ago, Jana Radtke made a career change on a leap of faith. After more than 20 years as a chief executive officer, chief information officer and chief operating officer with major financial and insurance companies in Texas and Florida, she went in a new direction. Confronted with the reality of finding trustworthy child care and long waiting lists for high quality options, she built her first Primrose School in 1995 in Texas. “Like all parents, i wanted my children to have the best possible experience and one that focused on early education in a warm, nurturing environment,” she says. Opening our Primrose School “was absolutely terrifying, but the best decision i’ve ever made! We sold that school when we relocated to Florida.” But early education was in her blood. She now owns several Primrose Schools in Florida, including in Cross Creek, Tampa Palms and South Tampa. Husband Richard is a commercial general contractor and builds all of the schools and handles the business operations and facilities maintenance. The entire family (five children and four grandchildren) is involved in the family business. “Each has in some way contributed to the success of our schools,” she says.
What is the secret to your family’s success?
it’s a balancing act! We live together, work together and play together, which can be hard but is also rewarding. Our whole family has made preschool education a way of life. We have learned to shut off business discussions after working hours so that we can find that separation of business and family. We have a no business allowed rule when our whole family visits our condo at Treasure island. And my grandchildren live in the same neighborhood so it’s always fun to hear them in the pool on weekends.
What is your biggest fear?
i always worry about whether i’ve been the best mom i could be. Being a mom is the most important job i’ve ever had. While each one of our children is successful, i hope that i’ve given them the foundation to balance happiness,
family, marriage and careers. i’ve tried to instill in each of them the right values, character and work ethic. i’ve tried to teach them that it is not just about the destination but the journey. But i wonder if i could i have done more.
What advice would you give to other women?
it is possible to have it all — family and career — but you have to work hard at balance. There have been times when the quantity of time i’ve spent with my family and children was less than i wanted, but i learned to make the time we had together absolutely the best in quality. We’ve learned, with our children scattered from Boston to California to Miami and even one in China, that family holidays and a family vacation every couple of years is time that really matters to us. We get away to meet somewhere and spend a week just doing nothing but having fun and going on adventures.
What is your proudest moment?
My proudest moment happens every day when i see all of our Primrose children arriving with excitement and anticipation of what they’ll do and accomplish each day. it’s also those times when a parent expresses a heartfelt thank you for giving them peace of mind. That’s when i know that 18 years ago, i made the right decision with a major career change.
What is your biggest achievement?
i hope i haven’t had the “biggest achievement” yet! i feel that my biggest achievement thus far has been reaching the point of being able to balance life, family and my passion for children’s education during their early years. i am proud that we are able to provide peace of mind to parents, a fabulous work environment for our teachers and to contribute to our community. it feels good to positively touch so many lives.
What makes you happy?
There are so many things that make me happy — a weekend at the beach wiggling my toes in the sand, spending alone time with my husband, our family barbecues and holidays when everyone comes home, waking up with new goals and dreams about something small i can do to make someone else’s life a little better. I just try to find joy in every day.
How do you relax and take time for yourself?
i don’t! Actually, i have to work at being able to really relax and take time for myself. Usually i can unwind at the beach, shopping with my daughter and granddaughter, or just getting away with my husband for a long weekend. We are looking forward to semi-retiring in the next year and traveling more!
What kind of message would you like to give women? you can have it all but it takes work. Don’t hesitate to call on your family and friends for small things they can do that help you find balance. We like to think that we can do it all (and we can) but it sure is easier when you realize that it’s really OK to ask for help, support or feedback (and it doesn’t mean you’re less than perfect).
How do you enjoy information from the magazine? i love to read. i’m constantly in search of anything related to early childhood, children’s growth and development, community service activities and events and family values. i always find resources and articles in Tampa Bay Parenting that give me inspiration, new ideas, philosophies and encouragement about ways to become more involved in anything that improves quality of life or our communities in the greater Tampa Bay area.
What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? When our children and their families come home for holidays, we always book a group event to see Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Rays and/or Bucs games. We’re a big sports family. We also love going to the beach and family barbecues — anything that gets us all outdoors.
Who is your biggest inspiration or role model? My mother was always my biggest inspiration. As a single mom, she instilled in me and my three siblings a work ethic, deep family values and social responsibility — giving without expecting. She modeled enthusiasm, a positive attitude and approaching each day with joy.

It’s a Hard Knock Life in Carrollwood Founded by educators Chad DeLoach and Brian Jonas, DJ Productions promotes meaningful musical theater experiences for Tampa Bay area youth, hosting camps for middle schoolers each summer. During the summer camp, participants get an opportunity to produce a Broadway musical. Previous productions have included Cinderella, Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr. and Seussical Jr. Annie Jr. will have four shows including 7 p.m. Aug. 9-10 and 2 p.m. Aug. 10-11. Advance tickets are $10 for members and $12 nonmembers (day-of-show is $12 members and $14 nonmembers). Determined to find her parents who abandoned her years earlier at a city orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan, Annie escapes to the big city and eventually finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks. For more information about this production or other August events at the center, visit www. carrollwoodcenter.org.
Viva Florida Events Celebrate 500-Year Anniversary Earlier this summer, Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced a series of Viva Florida 500 summer events and activities highlighting Florida’ anniversary. From discovering the culture and artistic traditions of the Seminole tribe of Florida at the Museum of Florida History to celebrating Florida’s history with food, music and more, the list of events reflects a variety of cultural and family friendly activities through October. “Viva Florida 500 is a yearlong commemoration of 500 years of Florida history and cultural heritage,” Detzner says. “We encourage residents and visitors to get out and explore the history and heritage of our great state.” Already in 2013, Floridians commemorated their heritage with the Big Orange Drop in Miami on new year’s Eve, an event renamed La Gran naranja for the 500 year commemoration; Viva Florida 500 Week, which consisted of reenactments of Juan Ponce de León’s landing on Florida’s east coast in April 1513; and the launch of the La Florida United States Postal Service Forever stamp. There are a number of Viva Florida 500 events still scheduled across the state throughout the rest of the year. Locally, you can see a few special exhibits, including “For the Love of Clearwater” designed to showcase local artists’ affection for their city through artwork, photography, sculpture and more. Works are on display through Sept. 13 at the Carnegie and Osceola Galleries inside the Clearwater Main Library and City Municipal Services Building, 100 South Myrtle, downtown Clearwater. you can also check out the 500 Girls Mural Project, an exhibit to run Sept. 21 to Dec. 2 at the Tampa History Center, 801 Old Water St., downtown Tampa. The exhibit will celebrate women of Florida’s past through a community art project involving girls ages 5-12. Stay updated on details for an October reception for this exhibit at the Center at www.tampabayhistorycenter. org. At the Hudson Regional Library, guests can watch various documentaries across a range of Florida history topics being shown throughout August as part of the library’s ongoing Florida History Series. Sanders School Recycles Big, Wins More Kudos to Richard L. Sanders School for its recent victory. This year, the Pinellas County school comprised of special needs students in kindergarten through high school took recycling to another level as part of Florida’s annual Earth Day recycling competition. in one month, students recycled 2,800 pounds of paper, a recycling rate of 20.3 pounds per student, winning first place in the per capita category of the competition. Seminole Vocational Education Center and Anona Elementary rounded out the top three, each recycling 2,280 pounds of paper. To congratulate the students and teachers, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Southwest District, in partnership with Pinellas County Schools, presented 1,200 students and staff with Florida State Parks passes. The annual competition is part of the state’s recycling goal, enacted through the state legislature, which declared a statewide recycling goal of 75 percent to be achieved by 2020 and directed the Department of Environmental Protection to develop a program to achieve this. For those who wish to implement or continue recycling efforts in their schools or homes, America Recycles Day is nov. 15.
