W

hen I was a boy, my mother, Judy Lisi, who is now president of the Straz Center in Tampa, ran the Cabaret Theater in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Costumes, music, lights and rehearsals were my playground. I performed in shows whenever a script called for a kid. I’ll never forget the moment in “Pippin” when I had to improvise after the live duck I was holding got loose during my big scene. In a split second, I learned one of the most valuable lessons of my entire life: Even terrified out of my mind, I could handle the unexpected. The performing arts are a wonderful way to introduce kids to a magical experience that instills profound life skills. Today, I program performances for The Straz, and my wife and I make sure our son has plenty of experiences in all kinds of arts at The Straz’s Patel Conservatory. In my article on page 16, I celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Patel Conservatory and how lucky we are as a community to have a place like it for our kids and ourselves.

n motherhood, most of us would admit to missing details, never getting the full story or even being totally unaware of what day of the week it is. But for these moms who appear in front of an extensive Tampa Bay audience with the latest happenings and best parenting practices, being in the know is all part of a day’s work! From breaking news and traffic reports to connecting with local leaders that influence education, recreation and community

involvement for our children, these media mamas show up for every one of us over multiple counties just as much as they do for their own families. While they are the most approachable, most generous and authentic women you’ll meet, their professional roles in our local news outlets are sophisticated and captivating. Behind recognizable names like Bay News 9 and Tampa Bay Parenting, their stories are front-page worthy as inspiring mothers to KNOW!

T

here we were, my dad and I, at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, 1988, for the final concert of Pink Floyd’s “Momentary Lapse of Reason” tour. I was 15 years old. The stadium buzzed with the electric opening of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond.” Then, David Gilmour ripped apart the atmosphere with the first four notes of that insanely perfect guitar solo. Time stopped. I stood in that frozen moment and thought, “This is it; I have to try to be able to do this, to figure out the mystery.” I had to make some kind of sound to keep that feeling in me alive. I had been transformed by being in the presence of something so real. That’s when I got really serious about my musicianship and began studying to become a professional musician. A few years after that epic concert, my mother, Judy Lisi, was hired as CEO of the Straz Center. My mother’s life in the performing arts profoundly shaped me as a person, and, as I discovered during that fateful moment with dad at Pink Floyd, as a professional. I studied my craft at a college conservatory, so I knew first-hand what a

dramatic difference conservatory training could be for an artist. When I found out that The Straz was building a communitybased conservatory on site, I was beside myself with excitement for what that meant to kids and adults across the neighborhoods of this area. Before the Patel Conservatory opened, the teachers used copy rooms and any free space to teach arts education at The Straz. When the brick-and-mortar performing arts school opened 15 years ago, we saw almost instant growth. The classes at our conservatory were designed so if someone wanted elite training in their craft, they could get it. Or, if someone simply suspected they had a knack for singing and wanted to learn a little just for fun, they could get that, too. We have classes from pre-K to seniors, we’re fully accredited and we have scholarships available, so everybody who wants to study the performing arts has the opportunity to do so. What I love most about working at The Straz now and seeing so many different people of different ages coming in and out of our doors is that we’re an open-arms hub offering non-stop access for people to be in the presence of something so real. Fifteen years is a huge milestone for the Patel Conservatory. The fact that we’re bursting our seams proves that people want to be together making something bigger than themselves. Art is the great equalizer, and supporting someone through something they’re scared to do so they can experience how awesome they are is a worthy human endeavor. These fundamental lessons of the performing arts teach us profound truths about our human existence. You don’t have to become a professional artist to reap the benefits of taking a dance class or a guitar lesson or a comedy improv workshop. We have wonderful plans and ideas in store for the future of the Patel Conservatory and how we hope to answer the enthusiastic demand for more arts education. This season, as we celebrate the 15th anniversary, we hope you take advantage of this wonderful school for your kids and yourselves.

SPIRITED ACTIVITIES FOR THAT WINTER STATE OF MIND

D

By Kate White, Glazer Children's Museum

ecember in Tampa is filled with blue skies, festivals and movies in the park. But the palm trees and bay views can make it hard to get into a winter state of mind. Here are some fun snowinspired activities that will get your Florida kids in the spirit of the season and keep their minds curious this winter break!

MAKE YOUR OWN SNOW

This science experiment is sure to be a crowd pleaser with the kiddos. Follow this super simple recipe for sensory snow that’s fluffy and cold, just like real snow. All you need is 4 cups of frozen baking soda and 2-4 cups of shaving cream. Put the baking soda in the freezer a few hours beforehand. When you’re ready to begin, pour the frozen baking soda into a sensory bin or bucket and start to slowly add in shaving cream, mixing it as you go until you reach your desired consistency. When your snowy fun is wrapping up, pour vinegar on the snow to watch it foam.

DIY SNOW GLOBE

Snow globes can be a fun and whimsical tribute to winter. Start with a clear, lidded container like a mason jar. Pick your favorite wintery figurine like a snowman or evergreen tree and glue it to the inside of the lid. Then simply fill the jar with baby oil or water and a pinch of glitter for a fun keepsake or gift.

POLAR BEAR BLUBBER

How do polar bears stay warm? Instead of telling the kids, show them with this fun arctic experiment. You’ll need a bucket of ice water, latex gloves or an empty plastic bag, and a jar of shortening. First, kiddos should submerge their hands in the ice water to feel how cold it really is. Once your little learners put on gloves, coat their hands in shortening and submerge their hands again to simulate the protective insulation of polar bear blubber.

18

Teach your kids how penguins stay dry. This experiment is all about how water glides off a penguin’s waxy coat. Start by coloring a penguin in crayon (there are tons of free printables online so you won’t have to freehand). It needs to have full and thick coverage for the crayon wax to do its job. Next, drip or spray water (dye it with food coloring for added drama) and watch it bead and glide off the wax.

Join the Glazer Children’s Museum for Merry Makers Winter Camp or build your own creation at our Gingerbread Village all December!

A DOZEN WAYS to donate new toys

By Laura Byrne

T

he simple act of donating a new toy can help you and your kids make a difference this holiday season and bring joy to a local child. Here’s our popular list of ways to give to local organizations in the Tampa Bay area.

MARY LEE’S HOUSE

Mary Lee’s House assists abused and neglected children in our community through a collaboration of government, private agencies and support from people like you. They accept donations of new toys, baby items, books and sporting equipment year round. Donations can be dropped off during business hours at the Tampa office at 2806 N. Armenia Ave. maryleeshouse.org

CHILDREN’S HOME NETWORK

You can help local at-risk families year round, but your help is always needed during the holidays. They also have a great need for clothing, shoes, bedding and personal care items. childrenshomenetwork.org

20

TampaBayParenting.com DECEMBER 2019

TOYS FOR TOTS

This U.S. Marine Corps Reserve program program collects and distributes Christmas gifts for children of all ages. Donate new, unwrapped toys at any of the drop-off locations in Hillsborough County. To learn more about the Toys for Tots program and locate toy drop-off sites, visit tampa-fl. toysfortots.org.

SALVATION ARMY

The Salvation Army Angel Tree is a great way to directly give to a local family and child during the holidays. There are Angel Tree locations throughout Tampa Bay. Visit salvationarmyflorida.org to find one near you.

THE SPRING OF TAMPA BAY

You can donate new toys (no stuffed animals) year-round to The Spring of Tampa Bay, which supports domestic violence survivors and their families. Survivors can pick out items in the thrift store to help them rebuild their lives. The store is also open to the public, and 100% of items sold go back into supporting the families with emergency shelter and services. This is also a good time to clean out those closets and donate gently used or new items you and the kids have never worn. thespring.org

METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES HOLIDAY TENT The Metropolitan Ministries Holiday Tent supports more than 13,000 families in need during the holiday season. You can help by donating new gifts, especially food and toys for infants and teens, at the tent or at other drop-off locations. Learn more about the items needed and drop off locations at metromin.org/holiday-central.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF TAMPA BAY

The Boys and Girls Club is collecting new toys for children of all ages, from elementary to high school age, and would appreciate puzzles, board games, toy cars and more. Toys and gifts for children and teens can be dropped off at 4221 W. Boy Scout Blvd., Suite 450. To learn more about the Boys and Girls Club, visit bgctampa.org.

ST. JOSEPH’S CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Year-round, St Joseph’s Children Hospital accepts toys, activities and comfort items for children of all ages ranging from infants to teens. Items such as Play-Doh, puzzles, educational games, video games and teethers are just a few of the items on the wish list. For the complete list, visit give2stjoeskids. org. You can drop off new toys and gifts at the information desk in the lobby at 3001 W. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

SHRINER’S HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN

The patients at Shriner’s Hospital for Children need your help for a better and more festive stay this holiday season. Due to space and patient needs, only items on the wish list (that include arts and crafts, Barbies, Uno cards, trucks and more) can be accepted. Find the full wish list for the Tampa Shriner’s Hospital at shrinershospitalforchildren. org/locations/Tampa.

OTHER WAYS TO GIVE Even if donating new gifts isn’t part of the family budget this year, you can ask your children if they want to donate some of their gently used toys they don’t play with anymore. A LOCAL MOM BUILDS A THRIVING CHARITY MAKING PB&J’S Story and pictures by Maggie Rodriguez

t’s like Christmas every day,” exclaims Luann Leahy, loading her van like Santa packs his sleigh with food for the homeless. “We feed someone every single day.” The founder of PB&J Ministry and her group of volunteers have been making sandwiches for the needy— spreading peanut butter, jelly and love—for 14 years. “We started out making 60 loaves of bread every month with five volunteers. Now we make 700 loaves with 60 volunteers.” The passion project was born after Leahy retired from a long career at TECO to stay home with her three kids. Once the oldest went off to school, Leahy felt a tug to “do something more.” Making PB&J’s, she thought, would be simple, quick and inexpensive. She pitched the idea to her church, and it skyrocketed. To see the ministry in action, we visit Nativity Catholic Church in Brandon, which donates its event space and supplies from its abundant food bank stocked generously by local supermarkets. Volunteers arrive by the dozens. They come from all over Tampa Bay and all walks of life. At one table, an accountant, two stay-at-home moms and a retired couple develop an assembly line that’s duplicated throughout the room. It takes less than one minute to make each sandwich. In just two hours, the group produces 4,000 PB&J’s. “We feed their bellies and their souls,” says Sandy Parker, a volunteer who came up with the idea of placing labels on the sandwich bags. Each label is decorated by local children and includes an inspirational message. “Doing this increases your sense of gratitude and appreciation,” says volunteer Karina Cardozo. “You are reminded of how others have less, and it puts your life in perspective.” Once the sandwiches are ready, we follow Leahy on her delivery route. We drop off donations at three facilities that feed the homeless. At St Andrew’s Episcopal Church in downtown Tampa, which serves lunch daily, we meet Rebecca Hess and her husband, a young couple who lives on the streets. “She shows us love,” Hess says of Leahy. “That means everything.” That kind of gratitude is what fuels Leahy’s passion. She doesn’t make a penny doing this. In fact, she spends money driving around town at her own expense to pick up and deliver donations daily. But she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I never imagined I would touch so many lives,” she says. To date, PBJ Ministry has made more than half a million sandwiches and partnered with 10 facilities in Hillsborough County to distribute them. During the holidays, the charity expands its outreach with special projects like making Christmas stockings and goody bags. Leahy’s success is proof positive that a simple idea— a nagging call that is answered rather than ignored— can change your life— and countless others. DECEMBER 2019 TampaBayParenting.com

HAVING THE COURAGE TO SET LIMITS

By Tara Payor, Ph.D.

W

hat happened to moderation? When exercising five times a week was good. Getting As and Bs was good. Eating a variety of solid foods was good. Playing sports for the camaraderie was good. There’s been a marked shift. Two-a-days aren’t just for athletes. Grade point averages are abysmal if they are < 5.0. Nutrition is poor if two of three meals aren’t liquid. Kids have no game if they don’t have private lessons. Extreme approaches, whether grounded in deprivation or glut, aren’t sustainable. The paper straw movement demonstrates society’s concern with sustainability for mother earth. Sustaining stability as parents, and kids’ stability for their still-developing minds and bodies, we must focus on pushing against the pendulum of extreme approaches.

24

TampaBayParenting.com DECEMBER 2019

Chiara Mobley bakes with a close friend's daughter, Adreya “Dre” Anaya. The three ladies had a baking day and focused on spending quality time together, following recipes, and learning new things in the kitchen. They shared dinner and dessert together.

HAVE THE COURAGE TO BE ORDINARY. A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE BIG, BETTER OR BEST ARE NOT HAPPY THAT WAY. MOVE THE NEEDLE TOWARD ORDINARY

Chiara Mobley is a licensed mental health counselor who works with moderation. “Most people who come into my office struggle with lowering the bar. It’s the opposite of what they’ve been taught.” Patients, from children to adults, make it into Mobley’s office because they reach a breaking point. “People do drastic things until they realize what they’re doing is unhealthy and they can’t carry on.” Sustainability is key. She underscores that society’s approach is big, better, best—if not, people aren’t viewed as successful. The approach is (a) not sustainable and (b) leads to comparison—the latter robs joy. Mobley advises creating realistic, measurable expectations and practicing moderation in those actions as well. She helps patients take a stepwise-processapproach to setting expectations. “People can’t just jump from being unhealthy to being posters of good health. Crafting personalized rating scales is helpful. If a 1 is sedentary and clueless about nutrition, but a 10 is the epitome of personal fitness and nutrition, how does one use moderation to move along the scale and what does each point look like?” Acknowledging limits is key, but often counter to cultural norms. “In a pure way, kids are taught they can do anything they set their minds to. Nurturing that belief can lead to maladaptive ideas and behaviors.” When they eventually encounter something they can’t do, the self-talk is, “I’m failing.” Negative self-talk can grow into years’-long narrative. Mobley notes, “I end up helping patients uncover where their narrative originated. Is it their own or is it comprised of messages they received growing up? Do they actually subscribe to the messages? There’s opportunity to write a new narrative, and some people learn how to re-parent themselves.”

Mobley adds that whether the intention is pure or altogether absent, kids learn about the world around them through parents’ lenses. Mobley encourages patients to have the courage to be ordinary. Society pushes us to have the courage to go after our dreams, but it can take more courage to be ordinary. “A lot of people who are big, better or best aren’t happy that way,” notes the counselor. It’s important that people are able to recognize what’s outside their limits, understand what is sustainable for them as individuals, and grasp their motivations. All are healthier than focusing on a bar set too high.

Mobley reads a cookbook and enjoys a cup of coffee. She's intentional in making quiet time and planning for things she enjoys outside of work, like baking.

MOVE YOUR BODY TOWARD MINDFULNESS

With the rise of organizations like CrossFit, fitness has become increasingly competitive. A competitive nature, infused into the fitness industry from former athletes turned personal fitness pros, doesn’t just go away. That can be both a blessing and a curse. Andrew Zoellner, a certified personal trainer with 11+ years of experience, notes, “Athletes can be valuable resources who teach about discipline, staying active from a young age, and pushing oneself.

But too many people are pushing through pain and fatigue.” A proponent of rest, Zoellner observes people so caught up in self-imposed-personalfitness-competition that they use exercise as a way to check out and lose being in tune with their bodies. Zoellner encourages clients to ask themselves, “Am I actually being lazy or is my body legitimately telling me to slow down?” He teaches that exercise breaks down tissue and bodies need rest or they’ll respond with sickness and mental fatigue. Like Mobley, Zoellner believes comparison is problematic and views social media influencers as part of the issue. “It takes years for people to reach the physical fitness level shown on Instagram. Plus, fitness programs are individual and don’t necessarily transfer from one person to another. In a one-click culture, many people fail to focus on longevity.” Consideration of one’s lifestyle is instrumental to supporting sustainability in a personal fitness program. If parents find that family time is negatively impacted because they feel compelled to crush another work out, there may be some blurred lines needing clarification. “Being healthy encompasses more than our bodies,” says Zoellner, father to a 4-year-old boy and with a baby on the way. “Reconceptualizing things that support personal fitness is an important step. Healthy activity isn’t limited to a gym. My son and I walk trails and connect by being outside together and doing things as simple as throwing sticks and rocks.” In this way, Zoellner takes care of himself physically, emotionally and mentally. Play is an ideal introduction to physical activity, which allows for family bonding. “Things are so structured that we’ve forgotten how to play. Kids aren’t going to learn through drills. They want to run, jump, and climb.” Zoellner believes adults need to get comfortable

with experimenting, playing and trying. When kids witness two active parents, they’re five times more likely to be active themselves. Regarding nutrition, he advocates for sustainability and experimentation. “It’s easy to get caught up in quick fixes and bandwagons. Don’t. Sustainability happens when we open ourselves up to experimentation.” He coaches clients to take elements from varying nutritional approaches and observe how their bodies respond. “I push clients toward self-regulation and away from being married to a diet because someone on Instagram says it works. We’re all different people with different guts.” Mindfulness is key to practicing moderation in personal fitness and nutrition. Exercise. Eat the cake. Work hard. Take breaks. Have courage. Be extra, sometimes. Be ordinary, too.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A VISIT REVEALS A NEED FOR MORE HOME CARE

By Dr. Pedro J. González Soto

O

ur goal is to provide premium home health care services to older adults while ensuring safety, independence, health and happiness. It does not matter if your loved one requires our services around the clock or on an hourly basis. Our professional team ensures that the best facilities are at your disposal. Our motivation for providing home care is rooted in our relationship with our father. He’s a cancer survivor and has suffered various health complications, including strokes and dementia. Home Care Assistance is more than just a business. It’s a family that enables us to cultivate cherished bonds with thousands of households. As a family-run business, we value care, compassion, kindness and dignity. It’s what differentiates us from the rest. The holidays are a special time for the whole family to be together. It can be challenging when you discover that mom, dad or an aging family member isn’t entirely as independent as you believed they were. We understand it can be overwhelming and challenging to realize a loved one needs help. The good news is that home services like ours can be brought in quickly to support your senior loved one. We have been through this struggle first hand and are dedicated to your loved one the moment you call us.

FOR A FREE CONSULTATION

As an adult child, you probably haven’t lived with your parents for many years. However, you do know their lifestyle and habits, and you will quickly recognize the signs that they need support at home. Some common signs are: • • • • • • • •

Personal grooming habits are declining House smells unclean Extreme change in weight and lack of nutritious food Confusion or loneliness Changes in habits and daily routines Lack of interest in activities and holiday traditions Expired medications Unexplained bruising

Unfortunately, many seniors avoid asking for help for fear of losing their independence. When you try to open a conversation about the need for home care, your loved one may deny all evidence to the contrary. We can help you navigate that conversation. We are experienced in assessing the level of home support that is needed, and we can discuss it in a way that reassures your loved one. Our highly experienced and skilled caretakers and client care managers are trained to provide you with precisely what you need while ensuring that ultimate peace of mind for the ones about whom you genuinely care. Going home for the holidays is supposed to be a happy occasion, not one filled with guilt for suggesting that your parents need help at home. Home Care Assistance understands the gradations of aging, and we can deliver care that begins during the holidays and extends for months and years to come.

new year, new home

Build a brand new house with kids TIPS

By Opendoor staff

With so many beautiful subdivisions under construction throughout Tampa Bay, many families may be dreaming of a new home in their future. If your family is considering a new build in 2020 or beyond, here are some tips to make the transition to your dream home a smooth, family-friendly adventure.

GET YOUR KIDS EXCITED AND INSPIRED FOR WHAT LIES AHEAD.

1

3

Visit model homes with your children and let your kids look at floor plan documents to imagine where their bedrooms will be and how furniture might be arranged. For the grownups, get excited but be sure not to get too lost in the model home’s beautiful design before consulting your budget. Many of the features of model homes are upgrades that may not be included in base sales prices. Fortunately, adding premium elements (like a swimming pool) to your new home’s design can increase its value, so upgrades your family can afford could be worth the investment.

KNOW THE RULES OF VISITING THE CONSTRUCTION SITE.

2

Watching your new home being built from the ground up can be very exciting, but construction sites can be a dangerous place for adults and children. Maintain open communication with your builder regarding when you can visit and consider leaving children with a sitter and sharing photos of the progress with them as the process unfolds.

ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO SELECT THEIR BEDROOM COLORS.

One of the most exciting aspects of being the first family to live in a new home is selecting your flooring and paint options and seeing the home come to life. Include your children in the selection process with paint swatches and flooring samples, and if you’re daring enough to have electric blue walls, allow them to personalize their room with their unique style.

4

BUILD IN AN AREA WITH HIGHRANKING SCHOOLS.

5

EXPLORE OPTIONS TO EASE THE STRESS OF MOVING.

If your kids will attend public school, do your research and consider building your home in a high-ranking school district. While neighborhoods in top districts tend to be a bit more expensive, research shows that homes in these areas have a higher resale value and tend to sell faster, too.

When it comes to timing the sale of your existing home with the completion of your new home, schedules can be challenging. Weather and availability of supplies can make your move-in date a moving target, causing your family to have to “double-move” or find a temporary place to live. With Opendoor’s Builder Trade-Up program, we’ve partnered with some of Tampa Bay’s leading home builders to make it possible to sell your existing home and move into a brand-new home in a single, seamless process. Visit Opendoor.com/Builder to learn more about the program that allows you to sell your current home and line up all the timelines and logistics with a newly-built home.

Interested in ‘trading up’ or simply finding out what you can sell your current home for today? Visit Opendoor.com and request a no-obligation, fair market value cash offer on your current home, which you’ll receive within 24 hours.

Download the Opendoor app to search for your next home.

LEARNING AND TEACHING IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SCHOOLS By Laura Cross, Hillsborough County Schools

W

iggle your eyebrows. Wiggle your nose. Blink your eyes. Open your mouth. Stick your tongue to the right, to the left. Great job! Is your face awake, boys and girls?” Walking into Ms. Alers’ kindergarten class at Dawson Elementary School in Riverview may look a little odd. The kids make silly faces or practice “flower breathing” hand in hand with partners. In a first-grade classroom, Mrs. Errity leads 6- and 7-year-olds as they shake out their hands and stand tall like trees with arms reaching overhead. But the purpose behind these mindful movements is just that… Mindful. “Movement is good for the body and good for the brain,” says Ashley Wiese, assistant principal. “We believe the key to academic progress is seeing that kids have the social and emotional tools they need so they can grow emotionally and academically.” At Dawson many teachers begin the day with breathing and stretching exercises. It’s all age appropriate. While kindergarten students are waking up their faces and learning to take calming breaths, third grade students are more advanced. In Mrs. Latimore’s class, the lights are low, calm music is playing and students are bent at the waist reaching to the ground. Slowly they raise up high to the sky. For the next movement they sit in a circle, stretching their feet in front of them. Together, they sway to the right and the left. At the end, Latimore asks them how they feel. A girl named Cassidy raises her hand. “I was sleepy this morning and rushed to get the bus,” she said. “But now I feel relaxed and awake.”

Students at Dawson Elementary work together on mindfulness techniques

Dawson has only been around for three years and social and emotional learning has been at its core from the beginning. “Our first year, we wanted a strong social and emotional foundation. Our entire school family had just gone through a huge transition by changing schools. We all came from someplace else,” Wiese explained. From there, mindful movements became a way of life—for students, but also teachers and staff. Wiese and Principal Derrick Mclaughlin want to make it clear that taking care of the staff is a priority for them. Dawson holds weekly yoga classes for its staff and they both believe that teachers perform their best when they feel calm and cared for. And they believe students perform at their best when they feel relaxed and safe. “Social and emotional learning is our foundation, but we have high expectations for academics,” Wiese stresses. “Practicing mindful movements helps our students academically to set the stage for learning. It also helps them daily—we are giving the kids the skills to self-regulate.” And those skills are something Dawson Elementary students will carry with them throughout their young lives, and hopefully into the future. Our district’s vision is Preparing Students for Life. This is absolutely preparing them: for the group projects in high school where no one will agree and for the workforce when they face pushback. This is preparing them for living. DECEMBER 2019 TampaBayParenting.com

OH, CHRISTMAS TREE CUT DOWN YOUR VERY OWN FLORIDA CHRISTMAS TREE IN TAMPA BAY Story and photos by Heather DeManche

N

othing brings the most joyous holiday season together quite like the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree. What would make the holiday season even more memorable would be the experience of cutting down your very own Florida Christmas tree. The award-winning Ergle Christmas Tree Farm in Dade City has been gifting this holiday bucket-list tradition to families in Central Florida for almost 30 years. This family-owned and operated farm sits on 24 acres. You can take your time perusing the fields of southern cedar and sand pine to find the perfect tree to cut down with a hand saw provided by the farm. The farm also offers both potted and northern pre-cut trees, as well as freshly-made wreaths and blooming Christmas cacti. While capturing the memories with your family cutting down your Christmas tree, also be sure to take a ride on the make-shift sled ride pulled by a tractor (open weekends only), see the farm animals and stop for a photo opportunity with Santa and his reindeer. The farm is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Field grown trees are priced at $6 per foot up to nine feet and $7 per foot for trees over nine feet tall.

tongue tie NURSING, FEEDING AND SPEECH

Rose S. Trowbridge, MD, Pediatric Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists

n infant struggling to latch or breastfeed can be difficult for everyone. For some babies, a nursing issue may be due to a little band of skin that is too tight or thick under the tip of the tongue. Tongue tie, also known as ankyloglossia, can be very troublesome for babies and nursing moms. The little band can keep the tongue from moving as it should and can inhibit a good latch on the breast to nurse or cause a very painful latch for mom. Symptoms for baby can include prolonged feeding and poor weight gain, notching at the tip of the tongue or a “heart-shaped” tongue, gassiness and irritability. Babies with tongue tie and feeding issues will usually be seen in their first days or weeks of life by their pediatrician, a pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat doctor, or a pediatric dentist to help identify the problem and treat it. Lactation specialists are also helpful with identifying tongue tie and latching issues. If the baby is found to have a significant or tight tongue tie, the band can often be easily treated in the office with a simple procedure to divide it called frenulectomy. There are a variety of ways to divide the band under the tongue without injuring any other surrounding tissues. Most commonly the band is cut with surgical scissors but at times a laser may be used. Rarely it may require anesthesia if the tie is posterior. The band is located near the floor of mouth where the salivary or spit glands drain, and care must be taken to avoid these openings. Once the procedure is completed, the baby is allowed to feed right away. Nursing moms frequently notice an immediate improvement in latching and decreased pain with feeds. It is important to keep in mind there are many different factors that can affect a baby’s ability to nurse and tongue tie is only one of them. Many babies will take a bottle of pumped milk or formula without issue and this is an option as well if a mom does not wish to direct. This can be a very personal decision for each family as they care for their child.

Infant with tongue tie

Occasionally frenulectomy will be performed even if a baby is feeding well to help prevent future issues. Tongue tie can also affect the way an older child eats, speaks or swallows. In an older child, tongue tie may affect some of the sounds of speech such as “t,” “th,” “r,” “d,” “z,” “s,” and “l.” It will not cause speech delay or difficulty learning to talk. It can affect a child’s ability to stick their tongue past their lower teeth and lick an ice cream cone, for example, or play a wind instrument. Tongue tie can be addressed at any age, but older children may need a slightly different procedure that will need anesthesia. Therefore, it is often prudent to fix the issue early on as an infant.

GETTING INTO THE SEASON WITH FOUR MOMS FROM BROOKSVILLE'S OAK HILL HOSPITAL

T

he holidays are such a special time for families. As parents, we are often caught up in making holiday crafts, attending holiday parties, preparing holiday meals and wrapping presents. In the busyness of the season, little eyes are watching and learning, taking in each moment and tradition, and learning that giving is better than receiving and family is everything. Four moms who work at Oak Hill Hospital, Brooksville, Florida, sat down to talk about the holidays. Meet Stacie Malyszko, RN, MSN, RN-BC, Director of Medical/Oncology/Pediatrics. She is mom to an 8-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. Erin Possert, RN, BSN, RN, ONC, Manager of Medical Oncology, Pediatrics. The mother of four has 8- and 9-year-old girls and 5- and 11-year-old boys Alise Arcarola, RN, BSN, RNC-OB, with The Maternity Suites – Labor & Delivery. She is mom to three: 4-, 9- and 10-yearold girls. Kelley Ventaloro, RN, CEN, Pediatric Emergency Nurse. She's a mom to four: 4-month-old and 17-year-old girls; 7- and 9-year-old boys.

Q:

How do you share the Christmas spirit of giving with your children?

MALYSZKO: We have the kids each adopt an angel through one of the local programs. Then we go shopping together and they pick out the gifts and clothes for that child. POSSERT: Each one of my four kids adopts an angel, too. They each have a small savings account and they take 50% of what the present costs from their savings account to pay for that gift. We also provide food baskets for families in need through our church. ARCAROLA: I teach them that it’s always good to give back to others. We go through all of their toys, they pick out the nicest ones, and we donate them to a local nonprofit. We try to teach them that there are others in need, and when you are in a position to give to others, you should and to know how extremely lucky you are and never take it for granted.

How do you talk with your children about Santa when they ask questions?

Stacie Malyszko's kids with Santa.

MALYSZKO: We give each of the kids one or two gifts from Santa and tell them about how we still have to pay for shipping for gifts from Santa! So rather than paying for the shipping of many gifts, we use that money to buy gifts for others in need. When we buy gifts for others, we really want them to be thoughtful, so we challenge the kids to notice things about their teachers, coaches, friends and family. My son has become really good at this! He’ll say “Mom, Mrs. So-and-so really loves the color purple.” And we’ll search for the perfect purple gift.

Q: A:

What are some of your favorite family traditions?

MALYSZKO: My mom would wake my three sisters and me up at 4 a.m. to start cooking the meal, and so my daughter and I do that together now. And we’re Italian, my grandparents assimilated here, so we would have an entire Italian meal from soup to nuts, and then of course we would have the traditional American meal with turkey, mashed potatoes, and everything. It was eight hours of food! POSSERT: The weekend before Christmas, we would go to my mother-in-law’s community and we would drive around to see the Christmas lights together. MALYSZKO: My kids trace the Christmas cookie cutters, color them and make placeholders for each of their family members. The family loves it and it keeps the kids busy in the morning while we’re cooking! VENTALORO: Every year, my aunt throws a cookie decorating party. She makes everybody aprons and we decorate cookies with dribble spray paint and sprinkles. We have Christmas music playing, and every year we add more kids! My aunt buys special Tupperware and boxes for everyone and we take them home and put them out for Santa. DECEMBER 2019 TampaBayParenting.com

Cooling in the NICU

ST. JOSEPH’S LEADS THE WAY WITH THERAPEUTIC COOLING AND ITS MIRACULOUS EFFECTS ON NEWBORNS WITH BRAIN DAMAGE By Anu Varma Panchal

T

itan Latimer is of average weight, a bit above normal in height. The 7-year-old is in first grade but reads at a third-grade level and does math at fourth. He loves LEGO Robotics, his school’s Chef It Up program, and baseball. He adores his older half-brother and sister, Brandon, 17, and Diana, 20. Though he’ll still run to hug his parents, he prefers to shower mom with kisses only when his friends aren’t around. He’s practically perfect, which could never have been predicted by the circumstances of his birth. When Samantha Latimer gave birth to her baby boy, she heard the Code Blue and knew instantly something was wrong. Titan was whisked away from her, giving only the slightest whimper before being rushed to the NICU. When she was finally able to see him, Titan was intubated, needles inside his tiny body. “I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy,” she says now. Titan’s umbilical cord had been wrapped around his neck during a four-hour labor, resulting in oxygen deprivation to his brain. The condition could have doomed him to a variety of developmental setbacks, including cerebral palsy, difficulties with language and motor function and a lifelong necessity for physical, occupational and speech therapy. But because he fit certain criteria, Titan was a prime candidate for a new therapy set up by Dr. Alfonso Vargas, a Pediatrix Medical Group neonatologist at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital and medical director of St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital’s Therapeutic Hypothermia Program. Therapeutic cooling is a process by which a newborn who has suffered moderate or severe brain injury is placed on a temperature-regulated blanket. A probe placed inside the baby then monitors the baby’s core temperature as that internal body temperature is gradually lowered by a few degrees. The baby stays in a “cooled” state for 72 hours and then undergoes a slow rewarming to get body temperatures back up to normal. During the entire process, there is a one-to-one ratio of specially trained nurses who observe the babies around the clock. The baby is continuously evaluated by multiple different modalities - head ultrasound and brain MRI, continuous electrical monitoring of the brain with special seizure detection software and frequent laboratory evaluation to name a few. Supplemental experts—radiologists, pharmacists

and neurologists are available for consultation and to lend their expertise. While it’s not entirely understood exactly why or how it works, cooling seems to do so best on babies who present with moderate brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation. For those with mild injuries, the protocol is to monitor and only occasionally cool. For those with severe injury, the damage has been done and cooling is still performed but is less likely to be of significant benefit. Vargas says cooling helps to slow down brain metabolism and reduce acid buildup and inflammation occurring as a response to the initial brain injury - all of this helps to decrease the likelihood of further brain injury and allow for the brain itself to start healing. “Following cooling, we see babies who have had phenomenal success,” Vargas says. However, cooling works only if is initiated within six hours after birth. This is why it is critical to get babies started on this treatment at once. To this end, Vargas emphasizes training and spreading the word through hospitals and birthing centers. St. Joseph’s is the only local hospital that provides active cooling on transport, whether the baby is transported via St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal and Pediatric Transport ambulance or helicopter. The specially trained transport staff act as the physicians’ ears and eyes on the ground to help identify candidates for this therapy at outlying hospitals. Titan was the first “cooled” baby at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital. Vargas just treated the hospital’s 106th one. Every other year, the hospital has a party that reunites the members of this very unique club. “It’s a massive boost to our morale,” Vargas says of these events. “It reinvigorates us. It not only makes us want to continue cooling but also ask, what can we do to make it even better.” As for Latimer, she’ll always be grateful for the emotional and informational support she received from the St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital NICU team. They hugged her, kept her informed every step of the way and stayed positive while they worked magic on her son. She knew that no matter what, she would love the baby that nurses nicknamed “Fighting Titan” on his crib’s name plate. But this miraculous outcome is not something she will ever take for granted. “He’s just amazing,” she says. “I couldn’t be more blessed.” BELOW Titan in St. Joseph's Women's Hospital NICU INSET Dr. Vargas and Titan

HELP AUTISTIC KIDS EXPERIENCE THE SEASON'S MAGIC

By Jason Hangauer, Ph.D., Pediatric Psychologist at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital

T

he holiday season can be an exciting and magical time of the year for kids. However, children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their caregivers may sometimes find aspects of the holiday season stressful. Here are some ideas to help make the upcoming holiday season more enjoyable and minimize stress for children with ASD and their families. This is also useful information for the general public who may interact with a child with ASD during the holiday season.

84

Many children with ASD have unique sensory sensitivities that can cause them to become overwhelmed in large crowded situations with bright lights and a noisy atmosphere. It is helpful to know your child’s limits and decide ahead of time what activities may pose a problem and consider skipping those. Be sure to check out specially designed activities for children with ASD and other unique needs. Examples are: • Sensitive Santa: Specially trained Santa who takes extra care to help support sensory, physical and other developmental needs of children with ASD. • Sensory Friendly Activities: A number of specially designed sensory friendly activities are available during the holiday season that limit the amount of noise and lights that can be difficult for children with ASD. Check online for locations and times and be sure to register in advance as the groups are kept small so children do not become overwhelmed.

PLAN AHEAD

Children with ASD can frequently struggle with changes that are unexpected. Bringing familiar items can help ease their anxiety. • Gradually decorate your home. Some children may have trouble with sudden changes to their environment. • If traveling, create a “busy bag” of favored items that can keep them occupied in the car or airport. Only allow your child to play with the items during times they need to stay occupied. • Communicate expectations ahead of time. Create a social story of an upcoming event such as flying on an airplane. Numerous online resources can help you design one for you child and the specific situation. • Show your child pictures of the places they will be going as a supplement to a social story before you take them there. • Consider food availability. If your child is very picky, remember to bring backup food items with you when you attend an event or are traveling.

PRACTICE BEFOREHAND

• Practice conversation skills ahead of time. Help your child with conversation starters so they can more easily engage with relatives and others. • Practice unwrapping gifts, taking turns, waiting for others and giving gifts. Role play scenarios with your child in preparation for him or her getting a gift they may not want so they can learn how to respond politely.
