Wild family tradition
It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas, and with Christmas comes endless shopping, parties and school activities. With a teenager, a tween and a first grader, my family seems to be on overdrive. But it’s important to stop and reflect on what the holidays are really all about: spending quality time with the ones you love and fostering traditions for your own children to carry on in the future. For us, it’s looking at Christmas lights, going to church, mingling at parties, enjoying performances and choosing the perfect family photo for our Christmas card. So what do the Zoo and Christmas have in common? When I started at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, one of my priorities was to plan a Christmas event that was memorable for extended families. There needed to be something for everyone to enjoy, and thinking of my own family, I knew there had to be balance. I had to be sure that my older kids wouldn’t rebel against a magical moment for my youngest believer, and there needed to be Instagram-worthy experiences for my teen. So, Christmas in the Wild was born. The event blends traditional Christmas elements with the magic of wildlife to give a new holiday tradition with a twist to families in Tampa Bay. Families can be nose-to-horn with an Indian Rhino
and then be hand-in-hand with Santa’s Elves. My husband, the foodie, can indulge in one-of-a-kind dishes only found during the event: gourmet mac and cheese, mouthwatering specialty burgers and decadent desserts. In its second year, Christmas in the Wild is back with returning favorites and new features that families requested. New this year, families can enjoy the sights and sounds of an animated, 50-foot Christmas tree. The perfect holiday card can feature a family during a signature animal experience – a tortoise encounter or a behind-thescenes tour. With lively entertainment, themed areas like Santa’s whimsical village and more stunning lights, the Zoo will be brimming with Christmas cheer. Our wish is to bring the wonder and magic of Christmas to your family. We hope this becomes a memorable, wild tradition for Tampa Bay. We believe that by connecting people to wildlife and each other, we are creating memories to last a lifetime. And that’s the heart of Christmas.

Family Fun | Santa in Tampa Bay
lives in Tampa Bay
By Laura Byrne
the children have gifts, everyone opens their presents at the same time, creating a crescendo of excitement and another great photo opportunity. Santa asks each child to show him the present the elves picked out, creating another photo opportunity. Santa will then pose for photos with siblings and families before exiting to the sound of sleigh bells and carols.
PRO TIP: Santa only makes special visits before Christmas to those children who have been really good.

Orlando for the 5 family fun ideas
Just about every kid has a vision of playing in the snow, tubing down a hill, throwing snowballs and drinking hot chocolate for the holidays. Parents: Don't worry. You don't need to fly to a cold winter place for your kiddos to have this experience. In fact, your child can do these things and more with a short drive to Orlando. Here are some fun family-friendly ideas we've found in Orlando to get you and your kids in the festive spirit.
By Ana Tataris de Jesus
1
CHRISTMAS AT GAYLORD PALMS
This year's theme for ICE is Christmas around the World. Bundle up the kids for this exhibit of more than 2 million pounds of hand-carved ice sculptures and two-story ice slides. The temperature is a chilly 9 degrees. The great thing is that there's so much more to do than the ICE Exhibit. The kids can go snow tubing, go on scavenger hunts, visit with Santa, decorate gingerbread houses and so much more. It's definitely a holiday experience to remember.
2
DISNEY'S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS
has the brand new Sunset Seasons Greetings, a projection light show that's expected to impress all ages. The Hollywood Tower Hotel and billboards lining the theme park’s Sunset Boulevard come to life to display holiday stories, with real falling snow and holiday music enhancing the spirit of the celebration. Watch Olaf pining over his holiday wish list as music plays and the scene freezes over into a Frozen winter wonderland.
3
New this year, UNIVERSAL'S ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE transforms
Hogsmeade into a magical holiday extravaganza with Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Hogwarts Castle is illuminated with dazzling projections. Kids can savor seasonal treats and drinks while listening to the famed Frog Choir and the wizarding world’s famous Celestina Warbeck. At Universal's Islands of Adventure, watch the live retelling of Dr. Seuss's classic holiday tale starring The Grinch as the Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular returns. If you love parades, be sure to visit Universal Studios where the Minions join Santa Claus in the all-new Holiday Parade featuring Macy's where larger-than-life balloons fill the streets every evening.
4
THE CANDLELIGHT PROCESSIONAL AT EPCOT is a beloved Holiday tradition. This joyous retelling of
the Biblical story of the origins of Christmas features a celebrity narrator, a 50-piece orchestra and several magnificent choirs. The special line-up of celebrity narrators this year includes Neil Patrick Harris, Whoopi Goldberg, Trace Adkins and Laurie Hernandez. Be sure to check the website for schedule of each celebrity narrator.
5
Splash into the Holiday Spirit at SEAWORLD'S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION. New this year is a Live Nativity show, “O Wondrous Night,” inspired by the original story of Christmas. The park will also be filled with holiday music and lighted trees. The kids can stop by Santa's Christmas Village to meet and get a photo with Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and his winter friends.

By Kristy Chase-Tozer, The Lowry Park Zoo
So, we’ve all been there; it’s December and your kids are out of school and extended family is visiting. How are you going to entertain everyone? It’s difficult to find something that appeals to my entire family, spanning from my kindergartener to my teenager to grandmother, while choosing an option that’s unique enough to be memorable and not some cookie cutter holiday event.
A
nd so we came up with the concept for Christmas in the Wild at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. The Zoo will transform once again into a world of winter wonder. For 18 delightful nights, guests of all ages will experience a merry and memorable evening with this unique, yet traditional holiday event. From the sights of stunning lights, the seasonal smells of holiday treats, the excitement of enchanting

entertainment and the magic of wildlife at night, it’s truly an immersive holiday experience. As Christmas lights begin to twinkle, guests can glimpse the nighttime habits of animals and discover which nocturnal creatures are most active. Animals have been carefully and safely acclimated so that habitats in the Asian and African realms of the zoo, along with Primate World, are illuminated for night viewing. Returning this year on select nights, guests can experience “Presents for Primates” enrichment and special holiday animal care chats. New this year, families can enjoy a Christmas-themed animal show featuring our famous brand ambassadors. More merriment awaits this year with returning family favorites like joyful stilt walkers, harmonious carolers, delectable holiday dishes and cocktails, festive music and wild gifts at the holiday shop. New this year, guests will be enchanted by the dancing lights of our 50-foot animated Christmas tree complete with 2,000 ornaments, 12,000 lights and an 8-foot star! The big guy in red will return to Santa’s Village and is excited to meet all the families of Tampa Bay! Also, debuting this year is a whimsical elf village full of seasonal trinkets and
keepsakes. Guests can now make text reservations to ensure they don’t miss jolly St. Nick before he goes back to the North Pole. Other holiday themed areas include “Holiday Hoedown – A Country Christmas,” where traditional colors and Christmas decorations adorn the farm presenting a festive, jovial atmosphere. Guest will tap their feet to the playful tune of a live country band while enjoying a warm cup of hot apple cider putting all in the Christmas Spirit. In “Polar Paradise, a Frozen World of Water, Light, and Ice,” our African tunnel will transform into a winter wonderland showcasing snow and dancing snowflakes. Guest can twirl in falling snow and enjoy the frozen waterscapes of light. Families will also celebrate the sounds of the season in “Candy Cane Lane,” a peppermint wonderland with live entertainment. Famous for unique cuisine, the Zoo’s Head Chef Itza Henderson has created a menu to satisfy every foodie’s taste buds. Savory dishes include braised short rib with smoked Gouda mac and cheese to S’mores bacon to a Holiday burger complete with bacon, cranberry relish, shaved Brussel sprouts and feta cheese. For those with
a sweet tooth, get ready to indulge in decadent desserts: We’ve got a gourmet selection of hot chocolates, peppermint mousse and deconstructed apple pie. And for those looking to spice up the night a little more, mixologists at the Zoo have created custom cocktails including peppermint martinis, frozen hot chocolate martini and spiked apple cider. Get your appetites ready – you can only taste these dishes at Christmas in the Wild! ‘Tis the season for giving, and by attending Christmas in the Wild, guests are helping support the Zoo’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate and care for animals. We hope that Christmas in the Wild becomes an annual holiday tradition for your family. When the Zoo and Christmas come together, it also brings families together – and those are memories you’ll cherish forever. Happy holidays, from our Zoo family to yours!
Christmas in the Wild will take place Fridays and Saturdays Nov. 24-25, Dec. 1-2, 8-10, 15-17, 21-23 and 26-30. The Zoo will remain open late on select nights. A variety of admission options are available online at TLPZ.org or at the Zoo’s front gate:
•Pay for a day - and visit the rest of this year and all of 2018 •Free and unlimited entry with Zoo Membership •A special “After 4 p.m.” ticket on event days for $24.95 (ages 3 and up).

Talking to our children about differences
The Sheridan family.

here were certain things my dad insisted on teaching me, like making sure I knew it was
wrong to point and stare at people. Now, my son is someone who gets plenty of points and stares. Because my dad instilled how impolite those actions are, I initially felt a gamut of emotions when our son received them. At the zoo, mall, and school, I had those moments of realizing our family was at the end of finger points and long stares. “Did you see that little boy?” “Aww, poor baby.” “What’s wrong with him?” Coming from young children, okay. When adults “Aarrgh” like pirates at our son because he wears an eye patch, it’s rude. Asking if he patches and wears glasses for fun appears thoughtless. Beyond teaching me valuable lessons on self control and decorum, having a child with an excep-

Kids with disabilities
Parents need to engage children in conversations about language. Have age appropriate discussions about just what normal means. Explore the negative tone of “wrong” within the context of differences. The movie “Wonder,” for example, follows a young boy with significant facial differences who undergoes numerous surgeries to help his vision and breathing. With younger children, picture books are effective. When we learned our son had to patch, we read “Jacob’s Eye Patch” together. Recently, I saw a marquee that read, “The only disability is a bad attitude.” Rather than teaching our children to focus on perceived limitations, let’s help them shift perspective to abilities. We all have the ability to focus on kindness, and we can use our unique abilities to help others. As

Do You Know What Would Happen To Your Kids If Something Happened to You?
This Story Will Break Your Heart
The answer may surprise you…
In 2006 Casey and Melanie Barber were on a summer vacation with their three children when their van blew a tire and spun out of control, resulting in a horrifying accident that left Casey and Melanie dead. Miraculously, all three of their boys survived the accident. In the aftermath of the accident there was confusion among family members concerning who would care for the children. Because the Barbers left no clear instructions, this confusion
ultimately resulted in a court battle over custody of the boys (and their inheritance) that lasted for more than a year, involved no less that 9 different attorneys and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorney and court time. In the end, the court appointed a legal guardian who may or may not have been the person who Casey and Melanie would have wanted to raise their children. We’ll never know because they never made their wishes known.
It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way for Your Family… Like many parents with minor children at home, the Barbers didn’t take the time to put a plan together that would have protected their children after their accident. “Many parents have so many questions about estate planning and feel so overwhelmed by the thought of their children being raised without them that they procrastinate and do nothing at all,” says St. Petersburg attorney, Mike Mastry. He adds, “I know how it feels, I’m a dad too.” “The most important thing that any parent can do is name a guardian for their children,” explains Mastry. “Most people don’t realize that if you don’t legally name a guardian to raise your children, then the courts will do it for you; and they may not choose the person that you would have wanted.”
system. Getting information about the basics of a good estate plan is the first step. The second step is to speak to an estate planning attorney about your unique family dynamic and your specific goals for protecting your children. They should be able to answer your questions, offer advice for how to best provide for your children, and craft a plan that meets your needs. With a good attorney, the process of estate planning shouldn't be intimidating, difficult or even time consuming. It should however be a fundamental requirement for every parent.
Every loving parent understands the need to have a plan in place should something happen to them. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misunderstanding surrounding wills, trusts, and the court
Attorney Mike Mastry is committed to preserving the legacy of individuals and families as a lawyer focusing on Estate Planning Law. He is also a dedicated father and husband, an accomplished woodworker, and a third-generation fisherman who grew up on Florida's Gulf Coast.
Are You Living with A False Sense of Security? A Parent’s Lack of Knowledge and Misunderstanding About Estate Plans and Wills Can End Up Hurting Their Children
In this free report, A Parent’s Guide to Protecting Your Children Through Estate Planning, we reveal the most frequently asked questions that we hear from parents of minor children, and the questions that parents should be asking to best protect their children. In this report, you will discover: • The legal documents that every parent must have to best protect their children; • Important documents that most estate planning attorneys rarely discuss with their clients; • How to choose the right guardian for your children; and • As a bonus, we show you how to choose the right estate planning attorney for families who have children at home. 8 places to donate new toys By Rosie Raggio
Most children look forward to waking up on Christmas morning and opening their gifts, but not every child can experience this without the help of a caring community. Throughout Tampa Bay, toy drives and donation centers distribute toys and gifts to those children in our community who need them most. Here are eight places where you can donate toys and other gifts to help all children feel extra special this Christmas.

Fader’s 9-year-old son Oliver has been dancing since the age of 4.
By Amy Hammond
I
t’s time for Boys Hip Hop at Saint Pete Dance Center, and swagger fills the studio. The music starts, a song the kids know, and they throw themselves into the beat. Instructor Katie Fader yells her encouragement. “You’re killing it,” she shouts. And they are. These are Bay Area boys who find coordination and stress relief and a sense of community all wrapped in a one-hour package: dance class. It’s an extracurricular that’s historically overlooked by young males, Fader says, but she sees that attitude changing. “Look at all the guys who are dancing right now on TV; they’re showing America that dancers possess conditioning and agility,” she says. “There’s a huge space for progressive dance in our society.” Fader recently opened her St. Petersburg studio with that progressive niche in mind. While she loves tutus, tiny ballerinas and classical practice, many of her classes share a modern twist. Music for her older ballet dancers is current. Would-be warriors in ninja class master body movements that encourage coordination and control. Hip hop sessions are designed to encourage acting and athleticism. “Boys who dance express themselves and get a ton of energy out,” she says. “I want these boys to feel good and be strong.” Fader’s 9-year-old son Oliver has been dancing since the age of 4. He’s also played baseball and soccer. He wishes 34 TampaBayParenting.com | DECEMBER 2017
all boys could realize what he does, that dancing is not just a pastime for girls. “Some people have talent but are afraid to show it,” he says. “If I didn’t dance, I wouldn’t be as confident as I am today.” Mastery of hip hop style is a motivator too. Oliver lists hip hop as his favorite dance discipline, and his signature moves as the ‘freeze’ and ‘coffee grinder.’ He can’t wait to get to the studio and let loose. He’s a boy who dances, he says, and he’s proud of it.
HERE’S HOW TO GET YOUR SON STARTED IN DANCE.
Whether he enrolls in an all-boy class or not, encourage your boy to put himself ‘out there’ and ensure him that dance is a safe space for expressing emotions and learning new skills. SENSORY SNOWMEN Corbett Prep kindergarten teachers treat their students to fun in the “snow” before winter break with these sensory activities. With a snow cone machine, teachers fill sinks (small plastic tubs work, too) with shaved ice, give the kids scoops and let them get creative! The students love scooping up snowballs and building miniature snowmen. Another option for kids is to make their own snow from baking soda and shaving cream. If you use this recipe, try setting a small bowl of vinegar nearby and ask your child to see what happens if they drop a snowball into the bowl (spoiler: it “erupts”)!
BRACE FOR A BLIZZARD One of the simplest snowy science experiments that carries a big wow factor is microwaving Ivory soap. All you need to do is unwrap the bar of soap, put it on a plate and microwave it for 1-2 minutes. It will billow up like a cloud – just wait for it to cool before touching

But for your kids to experience a traditional winter wonderland here, you’re going to need to get creative. Want to build a blizzard? Sculpt a snowman? With some household items and these tips from Corbett Prep teachers, you can whip up winter break activities that offer chilly fun and are (shh!) educational.

o you know that experiences are often considered more valuable and more memorable than material possessions? It’s true! Studies have shown that experiences provide more lasting happiness than having all that “stuff” we tend to give. Don’t get me wrong; I like a nice handbag or icy piece of jewelry as much as the next gal (I’m only human), but I do think there might be something to this idea of thinking outside of the gift box! So here are some of my suggestions of stylish “experience gifts” for those special people in your life.

Health & Wellness | Healthy Resolutions
eight resolutions KEEP YOUR LITTLE ONE HEALTHY IN 2018
By Anu Varma Panchal
With January around the corner, it’s time to start thinking of resolutions. For parents, it’s a double whammy because so many of our resolutions are on behalf of the little people for whom we’re responsible. Dr. Kristine Rietsma, a pediatrician with BayCare Medical Group and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, helps us out with a list of eight parental resolutions that can help us keep our little ones healthier in 2018! The key? Pick attainable goals, commit to them, and grow their scope gradually.

7
DON’T SKIP THE ANNUAL! While parents of infants and toddlers stay on
track with their regular pediatrician checkups because of the frequency, these tend to fall off after children turn 2 and go to once-a-year wellness checks. These are still crucial. Around the time of your child’s birthday, check your calendar and make sure you have their next well care appointment scheduled so they can stay up to date with vaccinations and be assured that their growth is normal.
8
PLAY WITH YOUR CHILD! Even on the busiest day, set aside just five min-
utes for sitting down with your kids one-on-one and letting each child talk. Don’t use this time to instruct them on what to do; just hear about their lives from them. Even the oldest teen can and does benefit from real, old-fashioned facetime with mom or dad.

Choose your baby’s caregivers carefullyand teach them what you know. A caregiver is ANYONE who comes into contact with your baby. Be sure to cover all points on this checklist to keep your baby as safe as possible. • Teach your caregiver how to give your baby a safe sleep
environment. Your baby’s crib should be empty except for a firm mattress and tightly fitted sheet.
• Explain that your baby needs to be placed on his or her back to sleep.
• Show your caregiver how to soothe your baby if he or she is crying.
• Tell your caregiver to place your baby in the crib if he or she becomes frustrated or stressed. • Ask your caregiver to call you immediately if he or she feels overwhelmed or stressed. Have a backup person to call.
• Show your caregiver how you support your baby’s head, how you change a diaper, how you feed your baby and how you would like the caregiver to help your baby play.
• Be sure to inspect the overall environment to make sure it is safe and clean. Ask where will your baby will eat, sleep and play.

Postpartum Blues | Health + Wellness
WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE THE DOCTOR? In general, make an appointment if you have any of the PPD signs or symptoms and they last longer than two weeks. If you have a history of PPD, this should be disclosed to your OB-GYN provider during pregnancy so you can decide what treatment is best. In some cases we start treatment before delivery to help prevent PPD. You should seek help if your feelings are getting worse, you are having difficulty taking care of your baby, or even just completing everyday tasks.
