Letter from the Editor Wow, the holidays are here! I can tell from the great events and fundraisers almost every weekend, as well as the cold weather. So much fun! I was involved in many great events last month which just makes Tampa a wonderful place to live. From the fantastic Junior League of Tampa Holiday Gift Market, where I was able to get much of my holiday shopping done, to taking my girls to see Phantom of the Opera for the first time, November was a blur! Walking the catwalk in Kit Stewart’s Fashionistas Fashion Show which raised money for the upcoming Focus on Females Women’s Healthcare Symposium took some encouragement from some great new girlfriends. It proved to be another great opportunity to meet even more incredible women and survivors here in Tampa. Thank you to all the super women involved in the event that worked so hard and made it so much fun! One of the other treats last month was meeting Nate Berkus- you know Nate, Oprah’s favorite interior designer. Luck have it that he was the interior designer for Bryan Glazer’s home here in Tampa. Bryan generously opened up his beautiful home for a fund raiser benefiting the Glazer Children’s Museum. Nate’s blend of antique objects, modern furniture and eclectic sense of style make Bryan’s home feel like you’re walking through the ultimate bachelor pad from the pages of Architectural Digest. Complete with a roof-top terrace, a bar with 12 televisions and your favorite retro pinball machines - the evening was a great time. The Glazer Children’s Museum plans to break ground next month. It is a great time to live in Tampa, with so many exciting projects in the works. 2009 gives us so much to look forward to. Have fun! I wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holidays!

Choose toys suitable to the child’s age, interest and skill level. Age labels are safety, not development ratings. “Many toy-related injuries occur when parents overestimate a child’s ability to handle a toy designed for an older age group,” said Bevin. “When a toy label says it is suitable for ages 3 and up, it’s not because the item might be too tough for a 24-month-old to fi gure out, but because the toy is small (or has small parts) and poses a choking hazard.” Avoid toys with small removable parts, which could pose a choking hazard to children under age 3. Parents can use a small parts tester or the cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper to identify choking hazards. Small children should not play with anything that can fi t into one of these cylinders. Don’t buy toys with small magnetic pieces for any child under age six. We recommend that you not buy such toys for any child younger than 10, especially if that child has younger siblings who could easily access the pieces. Avoid sharp points or edges on toys for kids under the age of 8. Avoid toys painted with lead paint. Exposure to lead can result in lead poisoning, causing serious damage to a child’s brain, kidneys and nervous system. Avoid electrical toys with heating elements (batteries, electrical plugs) for children under the age of 8. These toys are a potential burn hazard. Avoid toys that produce loud noises. High-volume games can permanently impair a child’s hearing, and loud sounds can frighten a younger child. Avoid toys with strings, straps or cords longer than 7 inches, which can wrap around a child’s neck and accidentally strangle him or her.

(Continued on page 20)

he holiday season is upon us, and many families are busy shopping for toys for children. There are approximately three billion toys and games sold in the United States every year, more than half during the holiday season alone. And while the majority of toys are safe, approximately 217,000 children are treated in hospital emergency departments nationwide each year; nearly half of these children are under age 5. Toys have changed over the years and the assortment can be astounding, particularly to those who haven’t shopped for kids in awhile. Child safety, however, never goes out of style. It is something grandparents and other family members should always keep in mind when selecting gifts for youngsters. St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Child Advocate Bevin Maynard notes that toys can become dangerous if misused or if they fall into the hands of children who are too young to play with them. “It can be diffi cult for parents and caregivers to keep straight all the safety warnings that come our way every holiday season,” says Maynard. “Appropriate selection and proper use of toys, combined with parental supervision, can greatly reduce the incidence and severity of toy-related injuries.” St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital recommends the following safety tips when selecting gifts this holiday season:

Radio Flyer Classic Lights & Sounds Trike with sturdy steel frame, non-slip wheels and electronic dashboard with turn signals, horm and music. $59

Propelled toy darts and other projectiles. Propelled toys can cause cuts or serious eye injuries. Immediately discard plastic wrappings on toys before they become dangerous play things.

A Gift is Not Complete Unless Proper Protective Gear is Included Bicycles, skates, scooters and skateboards are also popular gifts for the holidays. If children lack the proper protective gear or skills, injury and death can occur. In 2002, 130 children ages 14 and under died in bicycle-related crashes. In 2003, nearly 285,600 children ages 14 and under were treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicyclerelated injuries. To keep your kids safe whenever they “wheel” around, be sure to: • Include a helmet as part of a gift. Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent and the risk of brain injury as much as 88 percent. • Buy stickers or bike reflectors. Use a light and reflectors on the front, sides and back of the bike to increase the child’s visibility to drivers. • Buy a bike horn or a bell as a stocking stuffer. This tool is essential for warning motorists and pedestrians of a bicyclist’s approach. • Do not forget to buy elbow and knee pads. Make sure to include wrist guards for skates, roller skates and skateboards. Kids are sometimes reluctant to wear protective gear, insisting that they are good riders, complain that the items are uncomfortable or that none of their friends wear them. But St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital urges you to resist that temptation. With all the recalls in the news this past year, parents feel there are few toys to choose from that are safe for kids. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission encourages parents to keep up-to-date on dangerous or recalled products by registering for e-mail updates at www.recalls.gov. The National Parenting Center’s home page, TNPC.COM, offers visitors free access to hundreds of articles on parenting issues as well as Seal of Approval reviews.

lysia Saroyan Ekizian grew up in San Francisco and attended the University of Southern California where she received her B.S. in General Studies and then California State University, Long Beach for a Masters Degree in Education with the emphasis in Early Childhood. “My parents always encouraged us to find a career that we would love and enjoy over our lifetime. I love children and knew that at every stage of my life I could be a voice and an advocate for them”, says Alysia. During the summer of 1990 Alysia went to visit her grandparents in Cleveland, Ohio. Greg, whom she did not know then, was also in Cleveland attending the annual Armenian Christian Youth Organization Sports Weekend, and the dances and socials were at night that Labor Day weekend. Alysia’s grandfather encouraged her to go to the socials where there was plenty of Armenian music and dancing. This is where she met her husband Greg. After a two year long-distance relationship they married in 1993 in San Francisco. In 1995 living in South Tampa, Alysia was a teacher at Shorecrest Preparatory School and she and Greg bought their first home. At that time she also joined the Junior League of Tampa. In 1997 she left teaching to start her family and on April 1998 she gave birth to her first child, Melanie Rose. “It sounds cliché but it really was one of the happiest days of my life!” says Alysia. Three and half years later, after a difficult pregnancy due to placenta previa that required Alysia to be in the hospital for three months, Holly Marie was born 5 weeks premature on September 11, 2001. Alysia says “It was wrenching to watch the World Trade Center horror unfold so I turned off the TV that morning and our pastor soon stopped by to give me Communion before the c-section”. Thankfully and joyfully Holly was healthy. Alysia is also very involved with the LAMPlighters, St. John’s Episcopal Parish Day School, Junior

League of Tampa, the St. Hagop Armenian Church, Children of Armenia Fund and a Type 1 Diabetes Ambassador. Since her daughter Melanie was diagnosed in May with Type 1 Diabetes with no history of this in their family, they took the summer to “get used to having diabetes” as Melanie says. “It was important as a family to give her 110% support so that she could feel like herself again. If Melanie is well our whole family is well - grandparents and extended family included!!” says Alysia. The University of South Florida plans to create an integrated center for controlling and treating diabetes and aggressively working toward its eradication. The Tampa Bay area has excellent physicians caring for children and adults with diabetes, but Alysia says “For our community to move to the next level of care, we must give patients the opportunity to participate in the science that may translate research findings into a cure.” The university plans to begin recruiting an interdisciplinary team of basic, translational and clinical researchers, educators, physician-scientists and health care professionals needed to establish a multi-use research center at USF Health’s north campus. Such a center would provide patients with diabetes and related autoimmune disorders access to state-of-the art clinical trials. It would play a critical role in advancing the standard and quality of care in the Tampa Bay diabetes community and beyond. Families from across the Tampa Bay Region are forming a partnership to make this vision a reality for patients with diabetes and autoimmune disorders. They are playing a critical role in the design, advocacy, and fund raising for the Center. The goal is to create a world class clinical and research center that will provide an unprecedented resource for patients battling diabetes. This is a cause Alysia spends much of her time helping.

Mayors Benefit Breakfast

City of Safety Harbor and City of Oldsmar host holiday event to benefit children The holiday season is the time of the year when we remember that there are families and children living in our neighborhoods that do not have enough to eat or clothes to wear. Take time to get involved and do your part to help. The Safety Harbor and Oldsmar communities are invited to attend the December 9th Mayors’ Breakfast taking place at the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa. Many children this holiday season will go without gives and basic needs. Since 1993, City Officials and staff from both Cities have partnered with the Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, and others to raise over $27,000 for holiday support of needy local families. Businesses and organizations are invited to donate proceeds for charity, or to donate merchandise or a gift certificate for a raffle that will be conducted at the breakfast. Children and families to benefit from the proceeds are identified by city staff in partnership with area schools and the Safety Harbor Family Neighborhood Center, and local law enforcement agencies. City of Safety Harbor’s ticket proceeds are donated to the City’s “Sponsor-a-Child” program. Since the start of the program, 36 families, 100 children, and 17 senior families have been helped with gifts of food, clothes and Christmas trees. Oldsmar supported 75 – 80 families each year with a meal and some with holiday gifts. Individual event tickets are available for $25, with net proceeds of each ticket funding the holiday gifts, basic needs, and meals to be delivered by City staff, “Santa” and Fire Rescue crews. To sponsor a table or to donate raffle prizes or funding for the event, contact Julie or Gail at the City of Safety Harbor at (727) 724-1555. what’d you do today? a delicate question for the stay-at-home mom BY LISA BLACK

F

irst, it implies that I might have done nothing.

And of course, you can’t often build a great story around five loads of laundry, the spilled milk, finding the matching mate for two pairs of shoes, packing another peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chasing the snake from the patio, a search and rescue for the mysterious stench coming from the pantry, pick-up lines, another glorious trip to the grocery store, scooping the litter box, calling sitters for Saturday and all the rest of it! He knows not to ask, because, heck I cannot even answer that question. I have often wondered where my time and day actually goes. So I started thinking…where is my time spent? So, I decided to look at just a few categories for this oh-so scientific study of mine. Let’s see, the way I figured it…Yearly, I spend an average of 182.5 hours on laundry, 121.6 hours on search and recovery, 608.3 hours cooking and preparing meals, 365 hours on sparkling toilets, 182.5 reliving my schooling via homework and educational activities, 152 hours on children’s crafts and 456.25 hours driving the family cab. Let’s not forget the 121.66 hours herding and yelling “Hurry up!”, 255.5 hours on my cell phone planning, coordinating and venting, 48.6 hours for appointments, 158.6 hours observing children’s sports activities, 85.1 hours on “Please

wear something else…” and the 139 hours of torture buying expensive groceries, praying for a sale at Target for birthday and miscellaneous gifts and searching for cards for less than the cost of a meal. It continues at 24.3 hours twiddling my thumb at children’s birthday parties, 12.1 hours in attending classroom celebrations, 30.4 hours wiping a tear or mending a broken heart and 73 hours refereeing another fight between the girls. (And I calculated when the girls were in diapers, I spent another 486.6 hours a year just on one!) So, according to my paltry math, my basic work day averaged about 8.26 hours! If you have children in diapers or are in the midst of potty-training feel free to add in 80 minutes per day per child for your own statistical analysis! My husband is a smart man. He instead asks, “How was your day?” It makes my life seem so much more entertaining and worthwhile to humorously describe the funny adventures related to these often mundane tasks. But, if he ever dares to ask, “What DID you do today?” I finally have the list, the answer and my reply. Then, I will sadly reassure him that my fantasy of consuming an entire bag of Dove chocolates while lounging in bed the entire day watching Lifetime television uninterrupted- simply cannot and will not happen any time soon!

After two decades of serving the children and families of our community, The Children’s Museum of Tampa, has closed its’ Kid City location. The Children’s Museum, which started in a storefront location in Floriland Mall, has been at its current North Boulevard location since 1989 when it took over Safety Village from the City of Tampa. Hundreds of thousands of children have visited Safety Village and Kid City since it first opened in the 1960s. While it has operated under different names over the years, the mission and focus of the Children’s Museum of Tampa has remained the same to provide safe, hands-on, fun educational activities for small children. That vision will remain the same in the new Museum, named the Glazer Children’s Museum for the generous lead gift of the Glazer Family Foundation, where expanded programs and exhibits will provide more opportunities for children to learn and grow. Construction of the new museum begins in January 2009. “I remember going to Kid City as a child and I have taken my own kids there. It’s a wonderful place,” noted Kid City visitor, Lisa Metheny. “But having seen the plans for the new Museum, I’m excited to see all the things the kids will be able to do there.” “Because Kid City and Safety Village have been such an integral part of our community and touched the lives of so many children and families, we wanted to have an opportunity to celebrate with the community. We are planning the last free event to commemorate the history and impact of Kid

City and we invite everyone to join us,” said Al Najjar, Museum president and CEO. The Museum will open its doors free to the public for the last time December 5th from 1-8 p.m. There will be a special closing ceremony at 6 p.m., along with fun free activities for the kids. For more information about the event and the new museum, visit www.glazermuseum.org or call 813-277-3199. The Glazer Children’s Museum is a not-for-profit educational and cultural resource whose mission is to inspire children and families by creating learning opportunities around innovative play and discovery. The new 50,000 square foot museum, scheduled to open in downtown Tampa in early 2010, will provide a safe, stimulating and playful environment where children and adults can learn about themselves, each other, and the world they live in through exploration and role-playing. A combination of permanent and traveling exhibits, comprehensive year round programs, and special events will provide children, parents, caregivers, and teachers with a rich and ever-changing environment for playful learning.
