T
he holidays descended upon us quickly after my husband and i married in October and began our new life together. My expectations of a joyous holiday season faded as the reality of combining two households with different traditions settled on us. i wasn’t prepared for the chaos and heartache that accompanied our first Christmas together. Blending four young children, managing a harried schedule with two former spouses and competing with the other households for time ignited a simmering blaze that burned throughout the season, leaving behind a trail of hurt feelings and unmet expectations. i learned some valuable lessons on negotiating with others and compromising on details. i also resolved to take proactive steps to help relieve some of the turmoil and division that occurred among family members. Here are a few suggestions for a more peaceful get-together that will enable your family to enjoy one another and create lasting memories instead of simply surviving another holiday season.
Consider your children’s needs. Children don’t choose to join a stepfamily and they don’t deserve to be pulled between family members. Allow them the freedom to go to each parent’s home without a guilt trip. Help your children buy gifts for other family members. And don’t set a lot of rules about where gifts are kept or played with. if your child receives a gift he’s asked for all year and leaves for dad’s house that afternoon, it’s likely he will want to take the gift with him.
egapBe txenproactive. eht no deunitnPlan oc your schedule early. Have a family meeting and talk about the logistics of the season – when to decorate, what to eat, how to do a gift exchange (including who to
include) and special events (school programs, work gatherings). Ask each family member to participate in the planning and decision-making. negotiate the visitation schedule early to allow time for input from all parties.
Set aside unrealistic expectations. Accept
that there will be unhappy moments. Children experience fluctuating emotions as they cope with the loss of their nuclear family and accept their new family. They may act out or withdraw during periods of grief. When my stepchildren lost their mother, holidays became especially difficult for them. Memories of past holidays sometimes prevent them from enjoying our family celebrations today. However, a difficult day or period of unhappiness doesn’t have to ruin the entire holiday season.
Be flexible and agreeable when possible.
Be willing to make sacrifices to fit everyone’s schedule. Offer alternatives and recognize that Christmas can be celebrated on a day other than December 25 and still be a special day. We have altered our gift exchange many years to allow everyone to be together. Try to be fair to all parties involved and commit to do your part toward peaceful interaction with your ex. Separate old marital issues from parenting issues and rid your heart of resentment or bitterness that might be preventing friendly communication.
Start new traditions together and continue to celebrate old ones that fit.
Traditions offer a sense of belonging to family members and cement relationships. Talk to your children about what traditions are important to them and brainstorm ideas for new traditions to start. Soon after we married, we started a tradition of reading the Christmas Story to our children on Christmas Eve to remind them of the reason we celebrate. We also enjoy special church services and a light show together. We like to decorate the house and bake special goodies for those we love. Traditions are a great way for blended families to create bonds with one another that are strengthened every year. With the right attitude and proactive steps, holidays can be enjoyable and memorable as a blended family. There may be bumps along the way, but don’t give up on a joyous holiday season. Gayla Grace is a freelance writer and a wife and mom to five children in her blended family. She loves helping parents find success in their blended family relationships.

THe ecOnOmIcs OF early eDucaTIOn know, i know. On some level, referring to the bringing up of children in economic terms can be seen as demeaning or way off point. But i really don’t mean it to be. Rather, i use the investing analogy to help prove the point that our deep goals for our children can be served best if we make intentional, purposeful choices when our children are young. Choosing a great preschool will do much to put your child on a path for long-term school and life success.
Strong early childhood educational programs are different from day care. They provide more structure, are staffed by trained teachers, and are more purposeful in the activities they provide for the children. And while the daily schedule in early childhood programs does revolve around play like day cares, it’s very purposeful play that is designed to help children learn skills that will serve them well throughout their school years.
young children need structure. They must learn to follow instructions, relate to each other and play in a respectful manner. They must learn that there is an order to things. The activities and routines practiced in early childhood programs (circle time, calendar time, center time) provide that structure and order. Each activity is a building block for future success.
Here are some characteristics of great preschools. • Preschool is a busy place! It is neither reasonable nor is it good practice for young children to be expected to sit quietly for long periods of time. • Teachers work with individual children, small groups, and the whole group at different points during the day. • Children work with play dough and cut with scissors — activities designed to develop muscles in the hands so writing doesn’t hurt. • Children engage in creative, dramatic play, bringing the ideas from their imaginations to their interactions with others. This translation is a key element of language development.
• Teachers read books to individual children and/or small groups throughout the day — not just during whole group time. As part of the reading, teachers ask questions to help the children learn to discuss and predict, discern what came first and next and explore cause and effect. These activities should include lots of how and why. • Children are exposed to numbers, colors, the days of the week and other vocabulary to build a foundation for future learning. • Children learn to recognize patterns (ABAB, ABCABC) by using colorful manipulatives (tangible shapes or pieces like Legos that they can move).
• Children learn about science and social studies concepts (the names of body parts and organs, plants, the seasons, helpers in their community, transportation modes) often through song and movement. • Activities are not one size fits all. Attention is given to children at the level they each need it, whether the child is advanced or needs additional help. • Recess or unstructured play time is also vital. it’s in this setting that children learn to collaborate, get along with others, create games and, most importantly, work out problems.

All these activities build upon children’s natural curiosity. They help to cement their intrinsic motivation to become lifelong learners. And they ought to be fun! Early childhood programs are about learning how to learn in a social setting. The best way to help children meet this goal is for it to be fun! Though all of these things are important, the most significant element of any early childhood learning experience is the teacher. This is because learning occurs through human interactions. The best early childhood teachers are those who know how to play and find joy in the process. You’ll often find these teachers sitting on the floor with the children, interacting with them in their creative play. These teachers understand how to communicate, listen for understanding, challenge students, provide feedback, observe important developmental milestones and report to parents. The best teachers are those who are genuinely interested in their students. They are the ones who are best equipped to provide the necessary instructional and emotional support that create excellence. Finally, the hallmark of any great school is that the children must enjoy attending. Crying and complaints about feeling sick should be rare. Happy children make good learners and happy parents are satisfied that they are doing all they can to invest in their child’s growth. The desired return is a young adult who is independent, confident, skilled and grounded by all the attributes of outstanding character. Early investment is the most reliable route to this ultimate success. Mark Heller is head of school at Academy at the Lakes, a PreK3 – 12th grade independent school in the north Tampa area. Shay and her merry band of secret Santa s.

was 11 when my mom shared her idea. Friends of ours were struggling financially and although one of their boys was working at a Christmas tree lot, they couldn’t afford a tree of their own that year. My mom’s idea was to buy a tree for them anonymously so they wouldn’t feel obligated to return a gift. My mom’s plan went off without a hitch! My heart soared when my friend excitedly told me that her brother’s boss told him to pick any tree on the lot and bring it home. it was a “Secret Santa” gift for his family.
it would have been understandable for my single, working mom to overlook their situation and focus on ours. instead, she showed me how much we truly had. in the years that followed, we found ways to anonymously help others each holiday season. My husband and i recently moved our family from new Jersey back to Florida, where i was raised, so that i could join the ABC Action news morning team. A few months after our move, Superstorm Sandy ravaged our old neighborhood, leaving many of our friends and family in very difficult circumstances. Believe me; the irony of escaping a hurricane by moving to Florida has not escaped us. This year, more than ever, we are reminded how truly fortunate we are and how important it is to keep my mother’s holiday tradition alive. My husband and i strive to pass these valuable lessons (and the fun) of anonymous giving on to our children, even though right now they find it hard to keep a secret!
...................... by sHay ryan
in my experience, some of the best anonymous gifts came without much planning and preparation. However, in our quest to pass the tradition on to our kids, my husband and i have tossed around quite a few ideas, some of which i’m going to share.
Check with your house of worship to identify a family (or an individual) in need of specific items. involve your kids when you buy, wrap and give the items.

Involve your kids in making care packages, cards and/or artwork to mail to troops overseas. If you think your child can keep a secret (or you just want to test the waters for the learning experience), ask her teacher if it would be okay to give the class a “Secret Santa” gift. This would let your child see firsthand the excitement and joy that an anonymous gift can provide. The gift could be something simple like coloring books from the dollar store or a larger item that the teacher might suggest for the whole class. Unfortunately this one won’t work for us since my little ones aren’t likely to keep a secret yet! Shay Ryan is the newest meteorologist to join the ABC Action News morning team.

Spike & Splash Results in Big Fundraising Success
AHN sophomores Courtney Vogler (left) and Ericka Menendez (center) present a check to Moffitt Cancer Center’s Leslie Schipani-Anderson.
Academy of the Holy names and Jesuit High School recently hosted Spike & Splash for the Cause, an event in honor of AHn faculty member and swim coach Mara Toole Schultz (1976-2010) as well as members of both the AHn and Jesuit communities impacted by breast cancer.
Through entry fees, donations, merchandise and food sales and proceeds from schoolwide events, the groups raised more than $7,400 for Moffitt Cancer Center. In three years, this event has raised $26,600 for Moffitt. AHn’s volleyball and swim teams were recently selected to receive the youth in Philanthropy Award presented by the Suncoast Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at its annual national Philanthropy Day Luncheon last month. Co-nominated by AHn and Moffitt Cancer Center, the two athletic teams were chosen for their efforts to institutionalize their fundraising for breast cancer awareness and research through Spike & Splash for the Cause.
