ER Exclusively for “For the kind of care they gave us, I would have driven across the country.”
On Christmas Eve, Samantha complained to her mom that her stomach was burning. Her mom took her to the local hospital first. “They didn’t have what was needed to properly care for a child, so I chose to have her transferred to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.” At our kids-only ER, Samantha was seen by pediatric specialists and had surgery that night. “The whole atmosphere there is calm and serene, it doesn’t even feel like a hospital.” The new ER at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital offers: n Expert care by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians n Privacy and comfort in one of 22 private patient rooms

Happy holidays!
We’ve arrived at the most wonderful time of the year (or the busiest time of the year). With all the party planning and upcoming school programs, hopefully you’ve taken some time to tackle your shopping list. if you’re still looking for that special gift or need some good ideas, we’ve put together unique holiday gifts for the whole family on page 20. We made sure to include plenty of books and exciting gifts for the kiddos. When it comes to holiday gifts many people have shared that they feel pressure to spend a certain amount of money. i couldn’t disagree more. A true gift comes from the heart, regardless of price. On page 28, Gayla Grace shares some fun gifts that cost absolutely nothing and are sure to please everyone.
Me with Harry Con nick, Jr. at the Florida Hospital Starlight Gala.
At this time of year, along with all the festivities, I suggest you take some time to reflect on the past year. i like to take a day to think about what i learned and to write down my goals for the coming year. If you find “get healthier” or “lose some weight” on that 2014 list, Candie Swager offers some perspective on transitioning to a healthier you while leaving resolutions in the dust. Check it out on page 10. This month Julie Reyes of the Early Autism Project shares her personal story and how her son has grown from his diagnosis into an active, thriving first-grader. Their story is on page 16.

The holidays are synonymous with family and preserving traditions passed down from our parents and their parents before them. On the other hand, your family could try something completely new this year. My buddy Dan Shaffer of ABC Action News shares a different idea when it comes to traditions and shaking up the holidays on page 24.

hen the holidays become visible on the calendar, visions of turkey with gravy and ham with sweet potato casserole begin to tease our senses, especially our tummies. But we know in the back of our minds that January and resolutions will follow along with the word “diet” as we try to justify the overeating we’ve embraced throughout the holidays. So before it starts, let’s be proactive. Being proactive requires discipline: leaning toward protein and shying away from carbohydrates, participating in some type of exercise regimen, and pushing the plate away when you are full. The first step in taking a proactive approach is to undo all of the poor lifestyle choices we’ve made over the years. Let’s say right now you weigh 130 pounds and by the end of the year you’ve only gained 1 pound. What an accomplishment! Now let’s move forward. if you continue this pattern of gaining just 1 pound each year, do the math and see where you’ll be at retirement age. That 1 pound doesn’t seem significant today, but it adds up. So now you’re determined to make a change. Start by looking at your daily choices. What fills your shopping cart? After an evaluation, your food purchasing might evolve from white rice to quinoa, water instead of soda, and fish instead of red meat. Suddenly refrigerator condiments become low-sodium, fat-free, no sugar added and zero calories. Modifications to dinner menus may raise eyebrows around the table. But before you know it, food exchanging is going on such as sweet and sour tofu instead of sweet and sour lo mein, edamame instead of potato chips and dip, and lemon butter spritzer instead of salad dressing. you should also begin to eliminate free sugars and carbohydrates. Learn to like sugarless
beverages w i t h o u t turning to diet brands. Stay away from hard candies, which are melted and remolded sugar products. When dining out, skip the appetizer section on all menus. When the main entrée is served, eat slowly and when feeling full, stop eating. Enjoy fellowship at the table more than your food and if you recognize hunger, slowly eat another few bites, wait a few minutes and reevaluate. Share a dessert with those at the table and have just a bite or two. When dining at home, pair a simple salad or cut fruit with the main entrée. Say goodbye to meat and potatoes with gravy. Learn to like lean meat grilled without sauces paired with a green vegetable and a simple salad or fresh fruit cup. But dieting alone is not enough. Exercise is an essential addition to your lifestyle. Sweating and smelly sneakers are quite the deterrent to exercising along with the all too common no time excuse. After all, when does one really have the time during daylight hours to exercise? But the time is there. It just has to be found. Exercising is necessary to maintain the loss of muscle when losing weight. Paired with a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, muscle can be built. Even though we all know exercise is necessary, many of us put it off. The No. 1 reason: there is always a tomorrow or another Monday right around the corner. January of every year brings about New year’s resolutions, with the top resolution being weight loss. Gym memberships skyrocket and sporting goods stores see profit margins soar. Then February or March rolls

health & wellness ...................................................................................................................................................... around. Gym attendance thins out and the exercise clothing and equipment starts collecting dust on a shelf in the back of a closet. The secret to exercising is to not be aware you’re doing it. For example, mall walking while holiday shopping is more effective than you may think. Taking the scenic staircase in the mall rather than the escalator is a plus. The calf tightness of postmall walking is usually felt the following morning. Remember, this is not a bad thing. Tearing down muscle to rebuild it bigger and stronger is the goal. Add to the routine reaching over your head while browsing shelves and pushing clothing along the racks from left to right as you search for that perfect gift. This is known as resistance training. These activities, along with the balance it takes, strengthen your core muscles. Carrying your own packages rather than distributing them among your children or handing them to your spouse is considered weight training. Again, the lifting of weight with balance will also strengthen your core muscles. Of course, if you want to really push your workout then park your car on the edge of the parking lot. When you’re ready to take the next step, look for one of the many free online exercise routines tailored to the individual wanting to increase activities gradually to prevent injury. A popular online routine called “Couch to 5K” is a great place to start. Remember, even the most disciplined eater fights temptation. For the upcoming holidays stay focused on your choices. Share your plate with a friend. Take small bites, chew thoroughly, evaluate for that full sensation and engage in activity following meals. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Candie Swager is the manager of specialty services at Florida Hospital Tampa. Visit www.yourplacetostart.com or call 813-615-7300 to learn how to start your journey to a healthier you.

When Christian was 18-monthsold, i started seeing the signs. instead of racing cars, he would just spin the wheels or stare at the blinking lights. He didn’t play typical baby games or even respond to his name. Well-meaning friends and family tried to comfort me by offering explanations. “He’s a boy. Boys are always delayed anyway. They were born early. He’ll catch up.” Oh, how I wanted to believe them but my intuition told me something was not normal. i started investigating, reading and researching. i spoke with many parents and our family joined a new army of sorts. We began waging a war in unchartered and unknown territories — a war that besieges each child in distinct ways. While DJ was still deployed, we received our new assignment and the children and i moved to Northern Virginia. The last time DJ saw the children they were 6 months old. Not long after DJ’s return, we received Christian’s autism diagnosis. The pediatrician told us, “I don’t have a magic crystal ball. Each child is different. What we do know is that applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy is proven to help.” Christian was a little over 2 – and not speaking at all. So we mobilized to cobble together a program of all the therapies that would give our son the best possible chance for a normal life. i threw myself into learning everything i could about ABA therapy. i enrolled in the Florida institute of Technology ABA program, and i continued to read and research. i attended every speech and OT session, and so did Christian’s sisters. This was a family journey. With ABA and other therapies, Christian made amazing gains in only six months. Then we moved to Augusta, Ga. i thought i had prepared well, but my plans didn’t survive the first contact with the enemy. Our Augusta ABA program, the cornerstone of our therapy plan, was not as effective for our family as the program in Virginia. Christian’s verbal and behavioral skills regressed. So we searched for another ABA provider who would accept our insurance and piece together another team to help Christian and our family.

hey say if you’ve seen one child who has autism, you’ve seen one child who has autism. While each child is unique, families with autistic children share common challenges, goals and dreams – and overcome obstacles in their own unique ways. We are one of those families.
My son Christian is among the 1 in 54 boys who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We’re a military family, always moving, adapting and preparing for anything. However, there was no way to prepare for Christian’s diagnosis. Our military life started when i was pregnant with triplets in England. Alexis, Samantha and Christian were born at 30 weeks, delivered by emergency caesarean at a hospital near London. They each weighed a little more than 2 pounds, or 7 pounds, 11 oz — the weight of a typical baby — combined. They spent nearly two months in the neonatal intensive care unit before we could bring them home. Six months later, we returned to the United States. The babies and i lived with my 75-year-old father-in-law in New Jersey while my husband DJ was deployed in iraq.
When Christian was 3, we met Ann Eldridge of the Early Autism Project. At the time, Christian vocalized only a handful of words and had many behavioral challenges. We began working intensively with Ann, her team, our therapists, family and caregivers, and Christian made great progress. He attended preschool. About 2½ years ago, we moved to Tampa and DJ deployed two weeks later for a year in Afghanistan. We started all over again, as military families always do. Christian attended VPK and started school. Ann and her team at the Early Autism Project continued working with us – and they still work with us today. As our understanding grew and developed,
the war transformed from a personal war to a global one. it wasn’t just about my family anymore. i wanted to help others navigate their journeys toward hope and opportunity through autism support, education, information, shared resources and experiences. We know there are many families with a loved one who has autism, and we hope our experiences can help them navigate their journeys. Our family is active in the community and autism advocacy. i established a special needs ministry at South Tampa Fellowship Church, and i’m the volunteer chairwoman of the Walk Now for Autism Speaks Tampa Bay. i’m also clinic director of a new Early Autism Project scheduled to open in South Tampa in February. continued on page 18

...................................................................................................................................................... The Early Autism Project provides services to Tampa Bay area children and families in their homes, and we know many families will welcome the opportunity to participate in a clinic setting. ABA therapy is covered by many private and government insurance providers, including Tricare, for children between the ages of 20 months and 21 who have an ASD. As a military family, we’re especially grateful for this coverage. The impact of ABA and the Early Autism Project on our son’s life and our family’s life is immeasurable. We face every challenge and celebrate every victory as a team. Today, Christian is an active 7-year-old. He’s a firstgrader who loves to ride his bike, plays a mean game of Uno, does an excellent job with his math homework, loves maps and is a great navigator. Christian also dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame, his dad’s alma mater. We’re confident that with continued ABA therapy and other support, the love of his family and his own dedication, Christian will achieve this goal and any others he sets. Julie Reyes is clinic director of the Early Autism Project Tampa and serves as a military and community liaison. Visit www.EAPTampa.com or call 888-227-7212.

holiday
T
u e p k a h s leTTIng gO OF TraDITIOns
raditionally, an article on holiday traditions would open with a traditional sentence, something along the lines, “My favorite holiday traditions are (fill in the blank).” But as Bob Dylan so eloquently mumbled many years ago, “The times they are a-changin.” Traditions will necessarily change with them. indeed, change is inevitable. But for traditionalists everywhere, change can be especially troubling – downright depressing – this time of year. The holidays, after all, are steeped in tradition. We sing about them in time-honored Christmas carols. We see them played out for us in sappy supermarket commercials. We do our best to uphold them no matter the stress and strain it puts on ourselves, our families and our budgets. Our family is struggling with these kinds of changes right now. With a daughter in high school and two boys in college their time is stretched thin. Tagging along with mom and dad for a traditional Sunday evening stroll to look at the neighborhood Christmas lights or helping decorate the tree is probably not going to happen. Additionally, both the boys have part-time jobs and steady girlfriends, which means they won’t be with us as much as we would like. it’s what happens when kids grow up. And that is okay. While it can be hard on parents at first, we have to understand that this is the natural thing for our kids to do. it’s why we raised them – to set out on their own as responsible adults, forge their own path, and make their own way. We’re looking forward to having everyone together over the holidays. At the same time, we
are already anticipating that they are going to want to spend more time with their significant others or close friends. it’s up to us to play it smart, not be too heavy handed with the traditions and be thankful for the time we have with them. We’ve raised our kids with a few cherished holiday traditions — the first one happens right after Thanksgiving while we decorate the house. Mom and dad pop in the Bing Crosby Christmas CD (groans commence). There’s Christmas Eve at church; a trip to Walt Disney World to enjoy the holiday decorations and shows; my wife’s tradition of buying the kids matching pajamas (a tradition i suspect our 21-year-old is ready to retire); and the traditional trip to the ER after dad slips on the ladder while hanging Christmas lights. Okay, i’m kidding about that last one. But my point is our traditions are not our parent’s traditions nor will they be our kids’. The best we can hope for is that they look back fondly while establishing their own. Traditions are important. They help give families an identity. They help hold us together, providing a sense of security and belonging. it’s kind of like the wink and nudge of an inside joke that makes you feel special. The feeling can stay with you for years. Just because your kids are getting older, don’t assume they’ve outgrown your family’s traditions. As much as they might protest, our kids still expect to get those matching PJs on Christmas Eve. They still want to watch The Bishop’s Wife, A Christmas Story, and A Charlie Brown Christmas on TV. They still want scrambled eggs and homemade caramel sticky buns on Christmas morning. But know that they might not last forever. your family will change

As parents face empty nests, divorce and stepchildren the challenges to keep holiday traditions alive can be daunting. Terri Clark, author of the book Tying the Family Knot – Meeting the Challenges of a Blended Family, advises that you don’t push too hard. “Holidays leave a bittersweet taste for everyone in the family. We love the festivities, food and fun that accompany the holidays, but visitation, separations and changes in the way we have always done our celebrating dampen them. Sometimes old traditions can be carried over into the new blended family, but sometimes it is better to let them go.” As i write this i’m breaking in a new pair of dress shoes – my first in many years. My old ones were so comfortable i didn’t want to give them up. i had them resoled – twice. But it was time. And i know the pain won’t last and i’ll end up loving these just as much. Traditions are the same way. They’re like an old, comfortable pair of shoes. you know them and love them. They make you feel good, and it’s hard to bring yourself to accepting new ones. if the structure of your family is changing, instead of seeing it as a negative, look at it as a way to establish new traditions. “Weighing the importance of our old way of doing things against having a solid family can actually result in creating new traditions,” Clark says. Communication will be the key. Compromise will be the watchword. Talk about what the holidays have traditionally meant for you and listen to what your spouse has to say. Above all, remember to be flexible. Things probably won’t go exactly as planned over the holidays. Take a deep breath and let it go. But don’t let go of the memories. They would say, “Redeem for extra help in the kitchen or good for babysitting while you go to the store.” The special ones would say, “Redeem for an attitude adjustment on a cranky day.” My mom loved getting my gifts and always made a big deal of exchanging the gift for whatever i offered. it gave me a special feeling of satisfaction to know i helped my mom through such simple, heartfelt gifts. it’s easy to take your children to the store and buy a gift of material value. extracurricular activities or hard feelings with a friend can bring on unexpected meltdowns. Be sensitive to your child’s surroundings and recognize when they need some extra grace to renew their overwhelmed spirit or deflated attitude. Heather Hetchler, mom to six says, “While most gifts end up in a landfill, grace and flexibility help create cherished memories that will forever live in the hearts of those who receive these precious gifts.” Many families have unique challenges that show up during the holidays. Addiction seeps into homes, creating havoc and dissension. Mental illness rears its ugly head, resulting in confusion and uncertainty. The loss of a loved one creates a sad reminder that holidays will never be the same. Grace is the perfect answer when irritability, sadness or frustration set in.

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.
Dawna Stone is a health, fitness and wellness expert and founder of Women’s Running magazine and the Women’s Half Marathon series. This active, mom of two is now ramping up her work in an area near and dear to her heart: healthy living! An avid runner and ironman triathlete, the St. Petersburg resident has appeared on numerous morning news programs, including Today, won The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, hosted Health and Fitness Talk with Dawna Stone on Sirius Satellite Radio and Healthy Living with Dawna Stone on FOX and her first book, Winning Nice, made Amazon’s list of top 100 business books. Her latest book, Healthy You!, has been on Amazon’s bestseller list since it debuted Oct. 15! She was a financial analyst for Wall Street investment bank Morgan Stanley, a consultant for Deloitte Consulting, president of PR Nutrition, senior VP of operations at Active.com and chief marketing officer for a publicly traded company worth $700 million. She launched Women’s Running in 2004 and the Women’s Half Marathon in 2009, selling both companies in 2012. An American Council on Exercise (ACE) certified health coach, she earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a master’s degree from UCLA.
What do you think is the secret to your family’s success? i think it all comes down to love and respect. i have a 6-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son. i was fortunate to grow up in a family that was affectionate, and i think that makes a child feel loved and secure. i tell my children how special they are and how much i love them regularly. i’m constantly kissing, hugging and cuddling with them. i hope that the affection now will help them feel loved and secure even when they no longer want their mom doting all over them.
What is your biggest fear?
My biggest fear is that I will never be satisfied with what i’ve accomplished. My husband constantly reminds me to be proud of all the things i’ve done, but i’m always so busy working on the next big thing that i don’t take the time to appreciate the things i’ve already accomplished.
What advice would you give to other women?
Go after what you want and don’t be afraid to ask for what you deserve. In 2006, I wrote my first book. The most amazing part of writing the book was getting to interview a long list of incredible businessmen and women. A few weeks before the final manuscript was due to my publisher, my editor called and asked if i had given any thought to who i wanted to write the foreword of my book. i told my editor that i wanted Steve Forbes to write it. My editor’s reaction was one of pure excitement. i remember her saying, “Steve Forbes! That would be incredible! I didn’t know you knew Steve Forbes.” When I told her I didn’t know Steve Forbes, she became extremely quiet on the phone. She then asked how in the world i was going to get Steve Forbes to write the foreword of Winning Nice if i didn’t know him. i simply told her i was going to ask. it wasn’t easy getting a meeting with Steve, but he did agree to be interviewed for the book. After the interview, i asked him if he would consider writing the foreword. The book launched six months later and right on the cover it says, “Foreword By Steve Forbes.” Women are often afraid to ask for what they want. i’ve always believed in just asking — the worst thing that can happen is you get a no.
What is your proudest moment?
My most special moment was when I finally became a mom after years of trying to get pregnant. My proudest moment had to be selling my two companies, Women’s Running and the Women’s Half Marathon Series (five events in five states). Owning your own business is a wonderful experience, but it’s true that you work harder and more hours as an entrepreneur. When we received an offer for both companies, it made all the long hours and hard work seem worth it. i was proud to have built something that the industry leader wanted to acquire.
What makes you happy?
My children make me happy. i love watching them learn and explore new things. When they’re happy I find that I’m happy.
How do you relax and take time for yourself ?
Running and cooking have been the best ways for me to relax and enjoy a little me-time. i
recently started cooking a little with my 6-yearold daughter and she loves it. She keeps telling me that she’s going to write the next Healthy you book with me and help me cook during my TV interviews.
What kind of message would you like to give women in the community? it used to be that women felt they competed against each other in business and, unlike men, they didn’t have as much support or camaraderie in the workplace. i think times have changed, but there is still room for improvement. Women need to encourage and support each other. Building a network of successful women is so important.
What else would you like to share with our readers?
i love connecting with other likeminded women and sharing ideas, stories, etc. This past year with the launch of my new book, i’ve jumped full steam into social media and found it is a great way to connect with other women/moms. if women want to connect with me they can do so on Facebook (dawnastonehealthyyou), Twitter (dawna_stone), instagram (dawnastone) or Pinterest (dawnastone2).
How do you enjoy or draw information from the magazine?
The calendar of events is a great resource for parents! There are so many wonderful things to do in the Tampa Bay area, but it’s hard to know about them all.
What is your favorite thing to do with your kids in the area?
Both my son and my daughter love Great Explorations and the Glazer Children’s Museum. They would choose to go every weekend if it was up to them. They also love Fort Desoto Park, Busch Gardens and going to Bucs games. They like the tailgating!
Who is your biggest inspiration or role model?
My biggest inspiration and one of the things that keeps me striving to succeed is the hope that my children — when they’re are old enough to understand business — are proud of me and what i’ve accomplished while still being a great mom.

Students Say Ni Hao to New Learning Opportunities Twice a week, several students at Corbett Preparatory School of iDS travel to China — and still make it to their next class in plenty of time. These middle school students taking Chinese classes, thanks to technology that links them to their teacher overseas. Students file into their Tampa classroom, where desks face a large screen. A webcam projects their images to Mark Xing as he Skypes to the class from the Second Foreign Languages School of Nanshan district of Shenzhen, China. Xing writes phrases for students to review on a white board and students follow, asking their questions and providing answers to his. The students’ behavior is the same as if Xing was in class. Together, the class and teacher navigate understanding characters, pronunciation and nuances of the Chinese language. “This is a nice way to take advantage of the advanced technology,” says Xing, who is the director of teaching affairs in his school’s middle school section. The distance does require some improvisation. Paying It Forward One Meal at a Time Working Women of Tampa Bay recently reached out to its 600-plus members to recruit participants for the group’s latest community involvement. The local networking organization, which celebrated its fourth year this summer, has committed itself to adopt a route every other Friday for Meals on Wheels of Tampa. Participating members take one hour out of their day to deliver meals to those unable to leave their home due to age or disability. The group selected the Seminole Heights area of Tampa because of its centralized location. Three members will ride together to deliver the one route, giving these volunteers an opportunity to not only help out in the community but get to know one another and network while delivering meals. Go to www.workingwomenoftampabay.com for details. Visit www.mowtampa.org to learn more about available delivery routes and other volunteer opportunities at Meals on Wheels Tampa.

Whole Foods Tampa Partners with Local Farm Whole Foods has announced that it is partnering with Sweetwater Organic Community Farm to offer a new service to Tampa Bay area residents. The Tampa store will join other Whole Foods Market locations in Florida by opening its doors to local farms with a community supported agriculture (CSA) program. The program allows local farmers to use the store as a drop-off and pick-up point for their subscribing customers free of charge. This provides a convenient location for CSA members to pick up their share of the weekly harvest. Traditionally, customers of the farm must go to the farm itself or a central regional drop point to get their weekly shares. To support local farmers, Whole Foods has opened all Florida stores to be used as CSA drop points for free. Whole Foods Market Tampa and Sweetwater, a nonprofit community-supported urban organic farm and environmental education center in Tampa, have a long history of mutual support, including combined fundraising efforts and educational programs. Recently, Sweetwater was the recipient of Whole Foods Market’s 5% Day program, in which 5% of a day’s net sales are donated to a local nonprofit organization. The program raised $3,229 for Sweetwater.

Give, Receive at Panera Bread Locations Panera Bread has kicked off its Giving Tree Campaign in 28 bakery-cafes throughout the Tampa Bay area. The annual fundraiser benefits The Children’s Cancer Center and runs through December. During this time, participating bakerycafés will be displaying Giving Trees filled with wishes from area children who are battling childhood cancer and chronic blood disorders. Customers will receive a free Christmas Tree cookie for every unwrapped gift bought for a child in need. The Children’s Cancer Center makes use of many of the presents collected for its Adopt-a-Family program, which provides gifts to families supported by the center to help lower stress and anxiety associated with the holiday season. Additional presents are used year-round as part of the Love Bundles program. Love Bundles are filled with resources, information and fun items designed for distraction and play and presented to families shortly after their child is diagnosed with cancer. “We feel fortunate that through the help of our customers we can come together and make a difference in the lives of children battling childhood cancer” says Vikki Kaiser, director of marketing and public relations for Covelli Family Limited Partnership, Franchisee of Panera Bread, LLC. “Thanks to our heartfelt customers, last year we were able to donate over 2,000 presents to the Children’s Cancer Center. Pinellas Receives $14,500 to Enhance Digital Programs St. Pete’s Promise, a program of the city of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County Schools and the Pinellas Education Foundation, recently received $14,500 to help enhance the digital technology program at Gibbs High and the Graphic Arts Academy at Dixie Hollins High. Each school will receive $7,250. “Developing partners in the community to support schools is exactly what St. Pete’s Promise is working to accomplish,” says former Mayor Bill Foster. “I’d like to thank WOW for its corporate generosity and leadership and for investing in the youth of our community.” Classes in these programs are designed to create real-world, hands-on experiences for students. The digital technology program at Gibbs has classes aligned to both Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe Photoshop certification. The skills developed in these courses include journalism and writing, photography, graphic design, nonlinear editing, broadcast journalism, leadership and employability. Gibbs will use the funds for equipment that is equivalent to what students will use once they enter the workforce. Gibbs High School principal Stephanie A. Adkinson, Ed.S. (at podium) was on hand to receive news of the grant for her school’s digital program.
The Graphic Arts Academy at Dixie Hollins will use the funds to enhance its new Dixie inc. marketing program by creating a new print and digital magazine, a marketing team that requires students from various project teams to work together in a real-world environment and an oral history project that will capture history and serve the community.
All Children’s Hospital Earns Top Performer Recognition All Children’s Hospital has been named a top performer on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditation organization for health care organizations in the U.S. All Children’s was recognized for demonstrating exemplary performance in children’s asthma care. All Children’s is the only children’s hospital in Florida to earn this distinction. “Childhood asthma is a leading cause of hospitalization among children, resulting in children missing school and activities, and parents having to miss work,” says Jonathan M. Ellen, MD, president and physician in chief at All Children’s Hospital and professor of pediatrics and vice dean at All Children’s Hospital for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “We do more than provide excellent treatment when a child is admitted with an asthma attack —we also provide education for patients and parents aimed at successful management of asthma symptoms in order to prevent readmission to the hospital.” All Children’s is one of three Johns Hopkins Medicine hospitals to be named a top performer on key quality measures (Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington). Top-performing hospitals announced in this year’s report achieved at least 95 percent compliance with best practice processes of care, known as accountability measures, in one or more areas during the 2012 calendar year..

Tampa Y Joins National Giving Tuesday Movement The Tampa Metropolitan Area y has joined Giving Tuesday, an effort to blend the collective power of charities, families, businesses and individuals to transform how people participate in the giving season. Taking place Dec. 3 – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – Giving Tuesday will harness the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days synonymous with holiday shopping. “The Tampa Y is proud to be a Giving Tuesday partner. As a cause-driven charity, we welcome the important reminder that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” says Communications Director Lalita Llerena. “The Tampa Bay community should feel confident that every dollar donated to the Tampa y on Giving YMCA Child Care Services site director Lourdes Romero (left) and YMCA Child Care Services counselor Justice Gennari (right), seen here with one of the program’s young Tuesday and throughout the year goes participants, Kiara Mullens directly to help children and families participate in Y memberships and programs, regardless of their financial circumstances.” Seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, a group of friends and partners, led by the 92nd Street Y, came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. The concept gained steam, and by bringing together a group of founding partners, including the United Nations Foundation, DonorsChoose.org, Mashable, Blackbaud and Groupon, a nationwide series of discussions about how to make Giving Tuesday a success has been under way. Each week, new organizations join the movement. For more information about Giving Tuesday, visit www.tampaymca.org/givingtuesday.
