& A

with Alice Santana

Straz Center for the Performing Arts vice president of education and community engagement

Alice Santana, vice president of education and community engagement at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, experiences the transformational power of the performing arts both at work and at home. Daily, she witnesses students gaining confidence and blossoming on and off stage at the Patel Conservatory, and she notices it in her own daughter, who is also a Patel Conservatory student. We recently spoke to Santana about the benefits of the performing arts to the community, her own artistic expression and how she balances parenting and her rewarding career.

TBPM: What changes have parents told you that they've noticed in their children who took a class or joined a camp in music, dance or theater?

AS: First thing is that children find an increased sense of confidence, but also a willingness to try something new without fear. Students begin to blossom in our classrooms. After taking a few classes with us, they really find their passion for the arts within music, theater, dance or all three. Each of our students can dream, reach, discover and celebrate the arts, and it’s an amazing thing to witness.

TBPM: Your own young daughter has been attending Patel Conservatory camps and classes for the past 5 years. Why did you think it important to sign her up? And what has her experience been?

AS: I have always been a huge advocate of the impact the arts can have on a child’s development, so it’s important to me that my daughter experience these benefits. She has loved every minute of her time at the Patel Conservatory and has been fortunate enough to participate in classes across all the disciplines. She has recently gotten the musical theater bug, and all she talks about is when does she get to audition for her next show.

TBPM: Since you were a child, you've been involved in the arts. What drew you to the arts and why did you want to make this your career?

AS: I have gained a lot of opportunities, experiences and life skills that I may not have been exposed to if it weren’t for my involvement in the arts. I am first generation Hispanic raised in the United States. And even with limited means, my family was focused on creating a great life for us here. My parents had no clue about arts programs but just knew that they

had a kid that was constantly singing, dancing, cutting up all the construction paper and stealing tape in the house to create 3D food art. (True story, my mom still hides the masking tape dispenser from me and says I can’t get upset when my daughter goes into her own unsupervised craft making projects!)

I would ask to be signed up for every free extracurricular arts program or field trip my school offered and began to attend an afterschool arts program, like the Patel Conservatory, in middle school. That motivated me to audition for a performing arts high school and I got accepted. The experience of performing all over the city of Philadelphia with my high school concert choir led me to college coursework in music business which led to my college’s first record label and, well, you get the idea. Each opportunity has led me to the next step in my career. I haven’t stopped developing and creating and I hope to not be done for a long time.

TBPM: Besides running the Patel Conservatory, you are in charge of the Straz Center's extensive outreach programs. What would you like people to know about that?

AS: I began my career at the Straz Center overseeing our Arts Education Partnership Program, which provides free access to arts instruction tailored to each of our partnership site’s needs. The program also offers access to community tickets for Straz Center shows, scholarship opportunities to the Patel Conservatory and so much more. On average, we provide services to more than 40 schools and organizations in the Tampa Bay region. This program is very close to my heart. Because of programs like this, I was afforded the opportunity to be immersed in the arts as a child. And if it wasn’t for those opportunities, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

We also do a great deal of work in the military and veteran community and are part of the growing arts and health conversations in the country. People are always surprised to hear that the performing arts center is involved in these types of programs. The arts impact more than just our students and we know that

impact continues to weave its way through our community.

TBPM: You are part of the team that oversees the Straz Center's I.D.E.A. (Inclusivity Diversity Equity and Access) program. Why do you think it is important for the Straz to have such a program?

AS: The Straz Center is the community’s performing arts center. We have a responsibility to reflect our community and its ever-changing needs. Our I.D.E.A. action plan was in direct response to a time when our community was hurting and looking to institutions like ours to be a voice and supporter in this important conversation. This type of work is ever evolving, and it is a conversation that needs to be kept at the forefront if we want to influence change.

TBPM: Parents often struggle to find the balance between career and family life. How do you handle this balance in your life?

AS: There is no exact science or special recipe for achieving work/life balance. For me, it’s about prioritizing what is important for my family. And, along with my wonderful colleagues, determining goals for the Patel Conservatory that are in the best interest of our students and our community. Bottom line: It’s all about pre-planning, managing calendars and creating a realistic timeline.

Ask me that question when my daughter hits high school. I may have a completely different answer at that point.

Q
Patel Conservatory students rehearse for a performance.

Fuels Dance Students’ Dreams for the Future

Few sounds signal Christmas like Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. At the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, the classic resonates beyond the season when dancers from Next Generation Ballet® (NGB), Patel Conservatory’s preprofessional dance troupe and the Straz’s resident ballet company, will perform in recognizable roles alongside guest principal dancers from the New York City Ballet.

Philip Neal, artistic director of Next Generation Ballet® and chair of Patel Conservatory’s Dance Department, was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet for more than 20 years. Now, he’s guiding the NGB dancers not just in making seasonal memories for the audience, but in building serious dance careers. The NGB dancers rehearse four to seven hours per day, six days a week, from September until the performances in December, and who knows—a NGB dancer just might return years from now to dance with the next generation of the ballet company!

2 1

Depending on where you are, Clara may not be the name of the heroine. There were two versions of the original story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann and “The Nutcracker of Nuremberg.” In these stories, the heroine is known as Maria or Marie and her doll was named Clara.

The original working titles for “The Nutcracker” were “The Christmas Tree” and “The Fir Tree.” NGB’s production goes just by “Nutcracker.”

Nutcracker 2 1 3 4 5

The ballet took 42 years to migrate from Russia, first being performed in England in 1934. In the United States, it was first performed in 1944 by the San Francisco Opera Ballet. It took another 10 years to get to New York City where it became a full-on American holiday tradition after George Balanchine choreographed it in 1954. In Tampa, Next Generation Ballet and earlier iterations of the company have performed “Nutcracker” for more than 15 years.

Tchaikovsky thought this work was “infinitely poorer” than his score for “Sleeping Beauty.” “The Nutcracker” was the last of the three ballets he composed for – the first being Swan Lake. Next Generation Ballet has performed all three of these ballets at The Straz over the years!

Each year, NGB Artistic Director Philip Neal adds in a new element to the show – from a live choir during the snow scene to flamenco choreography during the Spanish divertissement. New this year, the youngest dancers ever will be involved in Nutcracker as Baby Mice during the battle scene.

To help get you in a Nutcracker frame of mind, enjoy this mix of fun facts about the holiday perennial and Next Generation Ballet:
COVER STORY
Nutcracker rehearsal at the Patel Conservatory.

A newly invented musical instrument of the time, the celesta, is the twinkling sound you hear in “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.” Tchaikovsky found the piano hybrid with a bell-like tone while in Paris and smuggled it to Russia to create the character’s unique musical accompaniment, which has been described as sounding like sprays of a fountain.

The Nutcracker musical suite has made some notable appearances in pop culture as well, in as varied a range of productions as Disney’s Fantasia (1940), a 1954 holiday episode of General Electric Theater hosted by then-actor Ronald Reagan, and several video games including Lemmings, Yoshi’s Story and 2007’s Bioshock.

In 2018, Misty Copeland, the first African American female principal dancer in American Ballet Theatre’s history, performed as Ballerina Princess in the Disney film, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” a retelling of Hoffmann’s original story.

Next Generation Ballet will perform “Nutcracker” Dec. 16-18 in Carol Morsani Hall at the Straz Center. For tickets and information on special opportunities for groups of 10 or more, contact the Ticket Office at (813) 229-7827 or visit strazcenter.org.

TBBEC has also hosted Bingo games during the month of February for Black History Month and June for Juneteenth.

“Creating TBBEC is a labor of love that I’m excited to share with Karimah,” Williams says. “Doing my part to help small businesses

in my community is an example I want to model for my children.”

Kwanzaa is an African American holiday. From Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, families gather to learn, teach and share about their connection to the African diaspora while highlighting seven crucial principles that are known as Nguzo Saba. These are:

Let’s Celebrate Kwanzaa!

Celebrating Kwanzaa can be done in many ways. Some fun ways to consider are attending community events, trying out African cuisine, checking out cultural books from your local library and of course, participating in the Bingo challenge!

Gallagher’s Christmas Trees: A Tradition of Forever Memories

If you’ve spent any time on Instagram, you’ve probably seen Gallagher’s Pumpkins and Christmas Trees in St. Pete pop up in your feed. From the picture-perfect pumpkins to magical moments with Santa, Gallagher’s is more than a pumpkin patch or Christmas tree lot—it's a special place that makes you feel as if you’ve been transported to the farm ... even though you are standing in the middle of a bustling city on St. Pete’s Fourth Street North.

Ciera Gallagher and her husband David took over the family business about 10 years ago. As they embark on Gallagher’s 35th anniversary in the Tampa Bay area this year, they not only look forward to continuing the tradition of creating forever memories for families, they are also dreaming big about the future.

TBPM: Ciera, this is more than a business for your family. It’s tradition.

CG: People tell us we have created a destination for them and their families and this is their tradition. Not only is it ours, but it’s their tradition. We’ve seen them grow and they’ve seen my husband grow since he was 1 year old running around here, and now they see our daughter the past seven years doing the same thing.

People take their Christmas photos here and they make them into cards and send us one. We’ve had some from families for 25 years. There are other ways to give back. This is just different—it’s giving back forever memories. It’s really special and it means a lot to us. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

TBPM: Why did you decide to offer more than just pumpkins and Christmas trees?

CG: We’re in the middle of a city, and so many people who live here have lived up north at one point. They’ve had the apple cider donuts, they want the hot cider, they want the truck, they want the animals, they want the bounce house. That’s what they’re used to, so I try to bring it here.

TBPM: In addition to the adorable photo opps, snacks and Santa visits, what kind of trees can people find on your lot?

CG: We sell from table top up to 20-foot Christmas trees and we have between 8-10 kinds of Christmas trees. I would say the number one everyone goes for is the Frasier fir, the good smelling ones, but a lot of people love the Nobles. You can pre-order your trees on our website and we deliver, and we do flocked trees. People love that we can make it look like it snowed on their Christmas trees.

TBPM: You are the second generation of owners. Are you hoping that continues with your daughter when she grows up?

CG: My husband—ever since we had a child, it hits different to him. I think that’s why it’s very important for us to keep it going for our 7-year-old daughter. She’ll tell people, ‘I’m going to run the family business when I get older,’ and that just warms my heart.

TBPM: What does the future look like for Gallagher’s?

CG: As much as I would hate to move off of Fourth Street, I feel like we’ve outgrown this space. I would like to offer more. I would never leave St. Petersburg. We were born and raised here, but I’d love a bigger property and start growing our own stuff.

TBPM: You have even bigger dreams for the future of the Christmas tree part of the business too, right?

CG: The big dream down the road: I would try to get property up in Tennessee or North Carolina. Now, this is just a big dream for us, but wouldn’t it be cool if we had cabins up in a tree farm? Some people come and get 10- to 15-foot trees. It takes a year for a tree to grow one foot, but if you’ve been getting a tree for the past five years, I could put your name on it and you could come visit your tree with your children. I just thought that would be so cool.

Gallagher’s Pumpkins and Christmas Trees is located at 7401 4th Street N., St. Petersburg.

Gratitude & Giving

FAMILIES AND METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES INSPIRE HOPE

“Gratitude

only the greatest of the virtues, but the parent of all of the others” (Cicero). Gratitude, not bound by November’s 30 days, merits permanent residence in our hearts, on our minds and at our tables.

Recent brain research demonstrates connections between gratitude and giving. Parents can model grateful temperaments and openly discuss the benefits of giving to those in need. In Tampa Bay, Metropolitan Ministries offers families opportunities for helping the at-risk and homeless. Children age 8 and older can volunteer, chaperoned by a parent or legal guardian.

“I was raised that way. My dad took food to the homeless,” Kelly recalls. Jesse, aware of the example he’s setting, shares, “We have a responsibility to lift others up.” Initiating conversations about one’s blessings, others’ needs and how blending gratefulness and giving benefits everyone involved is parents’ responsibility. Volunteering at Metropolitan Ministries has proven a Burchill family favorite.

PROMOTING DIGNITY

Brensey Thompson-Hurst, associate director of marketing and communications for Metropolitan Ministries, projects that 37,000 families will need assistance this holiday season. Metropolitan Ministries’ 17 Holiday Tents throughout Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties, where kids can sort donations, are central to their initiatives.

Thompson-Hurst knows firsthand how giving, beyond providing necessities, imbues hope. “Growing up, my family needed help,” she says. “We lived in a shelter. Giving back is part of my personal journey and every bit counts. When we instill kids with an appreciation for giving back, they’ll pass it on to friends and family.”

Volunteerism, by creating community connections, shows kids they can affect change and their voices have power.

Lainie Rowell, author of “Evolving with Gratitude,” writes that adults can help kids tap “into the power of gratitude both as an emotion and a disposition.” Holiday Tents let kids positively impact vulnerable populations’ most pressing need: food. There’s demand for frozen turkeys, ham, canned cranberry sauce and boxed stuffing. Anchored in gratitude, kids experience the value their time and donations provide the community. Shifts fill quickly, so consult Metropolitan Ministries’ volunteering page.

INSPIRING HOPE

Positive psychology researchers have found that cultivating gratitude in kids yields significant benefits, including higher grades and more solid social relationships. Kelly and Jesse Burchill, parents to Ella (11) and Lola (13), are raising their daughters with grateful dispositions.

Kelly questions, “If we don’t engage kids in volunteerism, how will they grow in gratefulness and initiative for carrying acts of service into adulthood?” Already, the girls request giving leftovers from holidays and birthday parties to the homeless. After Lola’s 13th birthday in a downtown hotel, the girls walked around sharing food with homeless residents. “I tell my friends giving is fun and makes me appreciate how lucky we are,” Lola explains. Ella adds: “When Metropolitan Ministries shares how many people they can feed because of our work, I’m happy knowing we helped.”

Kelly reflects: “What if you’re the one person that, this one day, week, or even year gives someone hope?” Standing in the position of need—of hopelessness— can happen to anyone…to anyone’s child.

ALLEVIATING SUFFERING

Due to rising costs in housing and gas, numbers of at-risk and homeless families in our area have increased. Metropolitan Ministries needs your family’s help in giving others food and hope. Fulfilling holiday initiatives requires Metropolitan Ministries gather 1 million pounds of food and thousands of people. By giving our children occasions for giving to others, we create spaces for gratitude and unleash the power of hope.

Metropolitan Ministries offers year-round opportunities for kids to grow in gratefulness and giving. To learn more visit metromin.org

Imagine her future with more smiles.

Through the actions we take today, we nourish the potential of countless children, families and seniors across our community. Feeding Tampa Bay has met the needs of our community with innovative programs that build healthier lives. And soon, we will be ushering in a brighter future with even more smiles and opportunities through increased access to food. Sign up for our newsletter to be one of the first people to see our big news.

We’re Building a Future Without Hunger: Can you imagine that?

Of all the powerful things in this world, few move me more than a child’s imagination.

From play-fighting dragons in the backyard to building a Lego empire, kids have a way of seeing life with wonder. They can be anything they want to be, building a whole world within their imagination.

Every child should have the freedom to imagine – and as adults, this kind of dreaming doesn’t have to end. But for more than 1 million people in our community, the strain of hunger and financial instability robs them of the ability to dream, the ability to imagine a future of opportunity.

That’s why Feeding Tampa Bay’s mission to change lives, one meal at a time and beyond, is so vital for our community’s health, wellbeing and vibrancy.

HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY

In our community, one in four children go to bed wondering if they’ll be hungry again tomorrow. Hunger hides in plain sight, among thousands of children and families. Most of us know someone who is hungry – your child’s classmate, a neighbor or colleague, or maybe even a close friend.

Even so, hunger is a solvable problem. We have the solutions to provide greater access to food and eliminate this need in families’ and children’s lives.

FOOD FOR TODAY

Since our community’s needs are everchanging, Feeding Tampa Bay is constantly evolving, bringing new innovative solutions to provide 85 million meals each year for people in need.

From providing fresh groceries at bus stops to joining forces with public schools

and opening on-site pantries, we’re working to ensure anyone in need of immediate access to food or resources knows exactly where to find them.

FOOD FOR TOMORROW

While all our interactions begin with food, they lead to so much more. We convene resources with the goal of connecting our neighbors to long-term stability.

We often meet parents like Anthony, a single father struggling to make ends meet. After we helped him apply for SNAP benefits, Anthony can now stretch his

monthly income to provide nutritious food for his daughter without stressing about also paying the electric bill or mortgage.

When we reach people in need where they are, we aim to break down barriers like cost, mobility and transportation to help people access food to keep them healthy.

FOOD FOR A LIFETIME

Our mission extends beyond providing food alone.

Through programs like our FRESHforce workforce training and our nutrition education, we aim to break the cycle of hunger and provide critical stepping stones to self-sustainability.

Take a moment and imagine with us — imagine a future without hunger. It might sound aspirational, but in a very real way, Feeding Tampa Bay is making it happen.

For over 40 years, we’ve worked tirelessly alongside our network of 400+ partner pantries and the community. And the real work has only just begun. A future with more smiles, more unity and more opportunity is within our reach.

INSIDE LOOK: Florida Children's Museum

The I-4 corridor just got a bit more exciting with a brandnew place to play! Formerly the Explorations V Children's Museum, the re-branded Florida Children’s Museum is a brand new, 47,800-squarefoot building located within the new 168-acre Bonnet Springs Park (which is equally as awesome).

The museum’s new name comes with a lot of intention. Located right in the heart of the two major metropolitan regions of Tampa Bay and Orlando, “We couldn’t help but invite the entire state to come visit," explains the museum's CEO Kerry Fallwell.

To help you plan your adventure, we’re sharing some of our favorite things about this amazing place to play!

Exhibit

Since we couldn’t fit everything we love about the Florida Children’s Museum on this page, scan here for even more fun details about what to expect when you go!

The Design Park exhibit area on the first floor is a creative space geared for kids ages 6 through 12, but even younger kids will enjoy playing here. One of the coolest features here is the long air-hockey type table where kids can set scarves, feathers and paper airplanes soaring across the table. There are also smaller play stations where kids can design a LEGO build, construct a house and play with magnet tiles.

Located on the second floor, the City Play gallery is where you’ll find the Orange Juice Factory, Publix Supermarket, Weather Station and more! The family favorite fire truck and sheriff’s car can also be found here, to the relief of several families who told us they were thrilled to see these made the move over from the old museum.

This space has a really cool design feature that allows parents to easily keep their eyes on their kids if they have multiple children heading in different directions. It is open and airy without taking away from each individual exhibit’s identity.

This is an absolutely adorable space designed for the little ones up to age 6, but older kids will also enjoy playing here with younger siblings and friends. It is a bright, colorful space on the first floor that also tells a story about the community.

“There was a lot of research in the beginning, so we took a deep dive into what is Central Florida now. And that’s when we learned watermelon is the fastest growing industry in Polk County,” Fallwell says.

To celebrate this important crop in our community, they designed this entire exhibit around the sweet watermelon!

Kids start exploring the huge climbing structure at the roots and vines of a watermelon plant and eventually make their way through to a slide behind the shape of a slice of watermelon and an adorable play area just for babies.

Let’s move on to the TBD gallery which is also on the second floor! Nope, they haven’t forgotten to name this play area. In fact, it’s called TBD because “everything is to be determined by the kid who comes in here.”

This is where you’ll find the Found Sound booth where kids can make music with all sorts of instruments and even pots and pans—and make as much noise as they want. There is a fun green screen play area where kids can create real videos and even a Stop Motion exhibit the older kids will love!

Moms to Know

Karrie Mueller

It’s a bird, it’s a plane…it’s Karrie Mueller - Super Woman, Super Mom and Super Friend. I get to say these things about her, fully realizing that it will make her nervous-laugh as she reads this, because I know she personifies these forces first-hand. From multiple successful businesses, to three happy children and a soulmate connection with her husband, Chris, she has found a way to keep things simple and have a good time. This includes showing up, too, for other moms and missions across Tampa Bay.

TBPM: Share your story of how you came into business ownership.

KM: My first business was Webhead Interactive, a search engine and social media marketing company that started in 2008. I had recently moved to Florida after working for the big agencies in NYC and started to work for a local agency here. I was working for them for about six months when the owner asked me to write a team training manual using the book “SEO for Dummies” dated seven years back. I thought: I can do this better. Chris (who comes from a family legacy of business owners and entrepreneurs) encouraged me to put my money where my mouth was and open up my own agency. So, I did just that.

Through Webhead, Chris and I discovered new business opportunities and ideas. For example: while doing keyword research for a potential client in the baking industry, I realized there were thousands of searches per month for cookie cutters on Google but no good, user-friendly and easy to shop websites. For that reason, we decided to build a website that sells cookie cutters that started with reselling wholesale items we purchased. Because I knew how to optimize websites and market them on social media, our sales increased quickly. Today, we have a large warehouse in Ybor City, a team of eight people, and we make all of our cookie cutters in-house (Cheap Cookie Cutters).

The princess company started in a similar fashion. There was a need for quality children’s entertainment in Tampa Bay, and I had experience in the entertainment business and realized the opportunity. I put together the website, found the talent, and got the costumes made. Today, Parties With Character has a complete cast of entertainers that have been a part of so many little princesses’ big days and special events.

TBPM: How do your businesses represent you as a mother?

KM: I love all of our businesses for various reasons, but one that really captures my heart is Dairy Joy.

Dairy joy was originally owned by the same family for 60 years before we bought it in 2018. Today, we are building family traditions with the business. We truly wanted to make Dairy Joy a family-friendly destination that transports you to a simpler time, where people hang out, relax and make memories together. It is a place that our three kids can be proud of and see what hard work can actually do within their community. On any given evening, they can find it packed with a line wrapping the property, with tables full of families enjoying themselves. They can watch us supporting our local schools and charities to help make a difference. Dairy Joy is one of our concepts that shows our children the most important things that we value most as a family.

And, knowing that we have something we can pass on to them; knowing that mom and dad work really hard and that it evokes great happiness… it’s just really cool.

TBPM: To what can you attribute your resilience over the past two years when other small businesses have had to make very permanent shifts? What is your best advice for other business owners who may be going through challenging times now?

KM: I have found that there is always a solution or answer to every situation. If you have a good product or service and listen to your customers, they will continue to come back, and you will continue to win new business. Sometimes that answer is closing a door all the way shut to focus on something else. I think it’s more about mindset and choice. I choose to have faith and accept what will be. Even when I pivot, even when I try to do what’s best, many things will still be out of my control, and that cannot take away from the choice to be happy and have fun.

TBPM: What is one thing you've learned over the past year that has made you feel like a more empowered mother?

KM: I have learned to never let any one person or business make you feel you don’t have a voice to speak up if something doesn’t feel right. I will never stand for bullying, and hope I am doing all I can to teach my children to never stand for it either. A business owner should always listen to the customer and never intimidate them. And I’ve learned that walking away from a toxic situation is the healthiest thing you can do no matter how hard it is. People are going to talk no matter what, but the way you carry yourself—your kindness and confidence—will speak louder than the gossip. Learning this has helped me be an example for my sweet, empowered daughters and son.

TBPM: What do your businesses have planned for families for the holidays?

KM: Dairy Joy has holiday specials throughout the month of December and photos with Santa on Dec. 4.

TBPM: What is your family's favorite thing to do in Tampa this time of year?

KM: We like to do all things Christmas. From Christmas Town in Busch Gardens, to ice skating at Winter Village in Curtis Hixon, we try to fit it all in. I want our kids to grow up remembering how mommy and daddy were always there, how magical everything was, and how much fun we had as a family in Tampa Bay.

Kids to Know:

Noah Cheong

On the first one-year anniversary of the passing of our June ‘Kids to Know’ feature, Taylor Koulouris, it only seemed fitting to request a nomination from her family of another stand-out child that is doing extraordinary things in Tampa just as she did. With these things considered, and because of the friendship he shared with Taylor since sixth grade, getting to know Noah Cheong this month feels extra special. At a time of year when so much is celebrated with the holidays, it’s important to remember that so much can change in a short time…and honoring and cherishing every person around us is what makes December truly special. This is precisely why we get to know Noah, someone who has always put others first.

TBPM: Volunteer hours are required for high school graduation, but your dedication to service goes beyond simply checking a box. Please share how your interest in volunteerism and giveback started.

NC: I began volunteering for organizations such as Metropolitan Ministries and Feeding Tampa Bay through Young Men’s Service League (YMSL), but it wasn’t until I started volunteering for Angling for Relief that I found a passion for helping others. Angling for Relief is a charity that teaches children with pediatric cancer how to fish as a sort of therapy to help get them through their treatments. It was started by my close friend Jake Klopfenstein who truly cares for those around him. I love setting up for the different fishing events and visiting kids in the hospital. It makes me happy to see them smile and laugh. I can only hope to make their day a little bit better.

TBPM: Please share the details of other nonprofits you have been motivated to start with other teens and how you intend to address needs within our Tampa Bay community.

NC: My friends Zach Lowry, Nikhil Tolat and I have decided to start a charity called Tutors for Tampa (TFT). Our goal is to help empower foster students by providing tutoring and a support system for them. We are still in the early stages of making the charity official, but we currently plan on visiting foster homes to tutor and help. The three of us all know the value of a tutor/mentor who cares, and we look to be that for foster kids. We have big plans for the charity, and we want to leave our mark in the community.

I was also invited to be a part of the Junior Advisory Board for the newly formed nonprofit Taylor’s Sunflowers and Sunshine Memorial Foundation, in memory of my friend Taylor Koulouris. Our next meet-up will be on Dec. 13 at 4:30 p.m. on Davis Island Beach for Sunflowers at Sunset.

TBPM: Does your involvement in multiple charitable organizations inspire your peers to also step up for causes and missions? Who inspires you?

NC: I’m proud to say that at my school there is a culture of helping the community. I have one friend who really enjoys tutoring others and another who organizes events to make lunches for the homeless. I frequently see posts about different service events led by Plant students. I hope that as I walk with God to better my community, I inspire others to better the world too. I’m personally inspired by my friend Taylor; her loving spirit is always with me whenever I do anything for others whether it be volunteering or just being kind. She was a model for what it meant to love and stand up for others. Her family has started a foundation in her honor that will benefit kids of all ages and stages. Their goal is to help bring out kindness, the ability to do good and the ability to give back just as Taylor did every day of her life.

TBPM: Tell us about what you do outside of service, like your academic and athletic engagements. Tell us about your teachers and coaches.

NC: Math has always been a favorite subject of mine and I really enjoy the problem-solving aspect of calculus. I have a wonderful teacher who teaches the content effectively and is

always patient when questions are asked. Outside of school, I run track. My two main events are the 200m and 400m sprints. I enjoy the sport because of the discipline it takes and the kind people I’ve met in the track community. My high school coach values honesty, respect and responsibility.

TBPM: How has your connection to pediatric cancer patients, foster children, and other kids in need changed you as a person? Has your altruism influenced your future career goals at all?

NC: My connection with pediatric cancer patients, foster children and other kids in need has shown me how the world is a place of endless possibilities. I’ve noticed how kids view the world as a place without limits, full of wonder and full of excitement. Kids are genuine and see the world through a lens free of the smudge added by the weight of the world. I think we all should view the world a little more as a place of opportunity instead of doubt.

TBPM: What is your favorite thing about growing up and living in Tampa Bay? What do you love to do with your family?

NC: I love the variety of sports, the beaches, the restaurants and the bay itself. My family and I love going to Lightning games together and fishing in the bay. We also enjoy traveling and making new memories. Another favorite activity of ours is spending time with our two dogs, Nala and Luna.

Tips from a Middle School Mama

I am a new middle school mom. Yes, I teared up as he got out of the car for his first day of this new adventure, but I did try to play it cool. I am still in shock that we arrived at this milestone so quickly, but here we are. Ready or not… middle school years are upon us.

Here are some simple tips for this uncharted territory:

Write them kind notes. They still need you. They won’t share with their friends that mom left a note, but it will mean a lot to them to see a hidden note in their backpack or on top of their laundry (that will take days to put away).

Remind them they are loved. Lots of emotions and insecurities are going through their head. A reminder that they’re loved no matter what might calm those nerves.

Offer to talk with them. They might not take you up on it right away, but it'll reinforce that you’re available and willing if and when they have something to get off their chest.

Listen to their stories. Most of the time, we don’t get many details past, “It was good,” but if they start opening up about something that happened at school or they’re telling a story about something funny they heard from a friend, listen. It might be the opportunity you've been waiting for to connect with your kids.

Parenting a middle schooler, a pre-teen or a “tween,” whatever you want to call it, is not for the faint of heart. It can vary from child to child, but attitudes can really take a turn as early as 8 and through the age of 12. During these pre-adolescent years, kids may begin to pull away from you and struggle more than they care to admit. Physical changes, growing pains with friendships and desires for a new independence can play a role in their development during this time. These preteens are a lot like toddlers in this new stage, they’re learning how to articulate their feelings and they’re demanding independence (remember the “threenager” struggles), but they still need you to guide and teach them in this new stage of life.

I am in no way an expert, just a mom sharing some tips that might help you. Along with a little trial and error, life with a preteen can still be amazing.

Pick them up with snacks in the car. They’ll be hangry and surprising them with a simple snack will most definitely give you cool points and eliminate some hangry vibes.

I’m learning as we go, but the preteen struggles are real. If you’re also parenting a middle schooler or preteen, we are in this together! I can’t promise that I won’t tear up when the Facebook memories pop up from those early preschool days, but I am excited to see my amazing kid flourish in this new stage we’re in.

The Best Life for Logan

Sometimes it would seem you can look at a child’s photos and tell in an instant whether they are well loved. Logan’s baby pictures are like that.

There are other distinctions in those photos too. In Logan’s first precious months of life, he looked different from other babies.

Logan was diagnosed with a complete bilateral cleft lip and palate – the result of a failure of the bones and tissues that form the nose, lips and roof of the mouth to fuse during development in the womb.

Cleft lip and palate can affect feeding, hearing, speech and dental development, as well as a child’s self-image.

Jodi remembers holding Logan in the days after her twins’ birth (Logan and Lindsay), completely in love and making promises to her newborn son.

“I remember whispering to him and telling him we were going to do the very best for him,” Jodi says.

THE BEST CARE

Jodi and Logan’s dad, Joe, wasted no time making good on their promises. They had done their research and arranged for Logan to be treated by Alex Rottgers, MD, a highly skilled pediatric plastic surgeon at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Rottgers is the chief of the division of plastic and reconstructive surgery at All Children’s. He’s served two terms as president of the American Cleft Palate— Craniofacial Association (ACPA), and currently works with a team of experts—the only ACPA accredited team in the Tampa Bay area—all of whom are focused on the goal of helping babies like Logan receive the best possible outcomes.

“We treat these children for about 20 years,” Rottgers says. “We’re looking at their speech and development, at dental growth and at surgical impacts on the growth of facial bones. We’re really not done until they’re finished growing as teenagers.”

THE GAME PLAN

Rottgers shared a “game plan” with Logan’s parents, carefully outlining each step and answering their questions.

At three months old, an orthopedic device called a Latham was surgically attached to Logan’s palatal bone and periodically tightened to help pull the cleft together to allow for a more successful repair.

At four months old, it was time for Logan’s lip repair.

Saying goodbye to Logan’s special smile was surprisingly emotional for Jodi and Joe. But they knew it was time to welcome in his “forever” smile.

Rottgers and the surgical team performed the complex lip repair as well as a primary nose reconstruction on baby Logan.

“I looked at his face … and it was wonderful, wonderful work,” Jodi says. “He looked amazing.”

But Logan still didn’t have a normal palate (roof of the mouth, separating oral and nasal cavities). Just before Logan’s first birthday, Rottgers performed the cleft palate repair surgery (palatoplasty), closing the opening in the roof of the mouth and delicately arranging the muscles and tissue to support normal function.

As Logan began to heal, his development was dramatic. He was able to learn to eat normally and had fewer gastro-intestinal issues. He began to learn to talk. He was a giant step closer to living life with normalcy.

PROMISES KEPT

Today, Logan is a happy, healthy 6-year-old. His speech is perfectly normal, and he is social and active. He still has surgeries in his future, but he’s come a very long way.

“We never want him to be ashamed of his cleft lip and palate,” Joe says. “We show him his baby pictures. This just makes him extra special.”

May Your Holidays be Merry and Safe!

Whether it’s visits to grandparents’ homes or hosting family at yours, the holidays can be a chaotic time when ordinary rules and protocols fall through the cracks. That’s why we put together these quick basic tips to help us stay safe and healthy this holiday season.

TOY SAFETY

As we start tackling those holiday lists—or start monitoring gifts that relatives are giving your little ones—a little thoughtfulness can prevent an unpleasant Christmas Eve visit to the emergency room:

• Choose age-appropriate toys. Even if the child seems “advanced” and could intellectually handle a more sophisticated toy, there may be safety reasons that a toy is marked for a certain age.

• Check toys for small components or removable pieces that might become choking hazards. Especially when you have children of mixed ages playing in the same space, ensure that the tiny ones do not have access to unsuitable toys. Store toys away after play.

• For any wheeled toys, such as scooter or bicycles, include a helmet!

STAY HEALTHY

This year, in addition to lingering COVID and the typical expected flu season, we have a previously overlooked player: RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus. Normally just a winter virus, RSV cases began to tick up this past summer, rise steeply in the fall and continue to surge this winter, filling children’s hospitals with kids.

While anyone can become infected with the viruses that cause the flu, COVID or RSV, certain groups are at higher risk of becoming severely ill from all three, such as older adults, very small babies and anyone with a compromised immune system or health conditions such as congenital heart or lung disease.

How can we prevent becoming sick with the flu, COVID or RSV or from transmitting the disease if we have it?

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve, not your hands. Throw away the tissue and wash your hands right away.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When using hand sanitizer, use enough hand sanitizer so that it takes at least 15 seconds for your hands to dry.

• Avoid close contact, shaking hands, and sharing cups and eating utensils with others, especially if you are caring for a sick person. As adorable as that little baby might be, avoid the temptation to kiss them, especially if they are in a high-risk category such as being born premature.

• Clean frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, mobile devices and banisters. When traveling, wipe down that tray table, seatbelt clasps and armrests.

• Get vaccinated. There are vaccines for both the flu and COVID that can reduce the severity of the disease if you get it. There is no vaccine for RSV.

• Sign up for toy recalls or look up recalls.gov to stay up to date on any new developments.

TRAVEL SAFETY

Nothing says the holidays like an exciting visit to grandma and grandpa’s house! But it may have been a long time since your well-meaning parents have had little ones in the house. Or maybe you’re hosting little ones and yours are older now. Whether you’re traveling or welcoming little ones to your home, keep these tips in mind:

• Travel with your car seat, even if you are flying, so you can secure your child in the plane. Ensure that your car seat has a label that states that it is certified for use in aircraft; otherwise you may be asked to check it.

• Store cleaning products, personal care products and medications out of sight and out of reach of little hands and mouths. If any of these things are accidentally ingested, call poison control at 800222-1222.

• Keep window blind cords looped up and out of reach of little ones who can get easily stuck in the cords and possibly choke.

• Make sure all buckets and tubs are drained and toilet lids are closed. If there is a pool, ensure that it has a cover and pool fence that a child cannot open, with alarms that let you know if there has been a breach. Keep doors locked and arm your sensors.

• If you are staying in a hotel, request a crib or bassinet so baby can sleep safely alone on their back in their own sleeping area.

There’s a major demand for help in our community, and happy holidays are out of reach for so many struggling families.

Let your love shine by supporting one of our three main Holiday Tents or 17 pop-ups throughout Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties – including the addition of two locations in Lee County to bring Christmas to those in need and devastated by Hurricane Ian.
