The Next Generation Ballet’s Nutcracker:

A DANCE FOR DREAMERS

There is something magical about experiencing “Nutcracker” by Next Generation Ballet® at The Straz. While it is a timeless holiday tradition for many families in our area, it is also a performance that inspires young dreamers. Nutcracker is often a child’s first ballet, whether they are in the audience or dancing on stage. And as they begin to imagine themselves dancing like the Sugar Plum Fairy and Prince, that’s how the magic begins.

Just ask Jarod Curley, an NGB alum who is now part of the American Ballet Theatre in New York City. He returns to The Straz as a guest star dancer along with fellow ABT dancer Chloe Misseldine in this month’s performances. We recently caught up with Jarod, who is sharing how Nutcracker inspired his journey as a dancer and how NGB set him on the path of success to achieve that dream.

TBPM: Jarod, what's it like for you to come back to Tampa Bay?

JC: It's wonderful. I grew up in Maryland in the D.C. area. When I went to NGB, it was a big decision for my family, but they ultimately got a small condo in Tampa, and they ended up staying. And so they spend part of the year down there. It is really an incredible place to live. There's just so much life and so much momentum in Tampa. I love visiting.

TBPM: Tell us about what makes Nutcracker so special to you and its impact on your journey as a professional dancer.

JC: I was probably 6 or 7 and I was the Nutcracker Prince in the production in

my hometown in Frederick, Maryland. My director at the time, Joyce Morrison, brought in Megan Fairchild and Andrew Vayette, who were two principals with the New York City Ballet. Andrew came out and did the à la seconde [when a dancer extends leg parallel to the ground and spins], and my jaw just hit the floor.

It was a life-changing moment. I saw this superhero right in front of me. I'd never seen a fully-fledged male dancer in my life before. And I saw him doing à la secondes, which became one of my favorite steps. I just became so dedicated to learning how to do à la secondes because I was so impressed.

To see fully developed principal dancers like that

photo

Jarod Curley performing in Nutcracker at the Straz when he was a student at Next Generation Ballet

from New York City Ballet performing at such a high level, it completely changed my life. And I think I decided in that moment this is what I wanted to do.

TBPM: To be back on the stage at The Straz, potentially inspiring another child to dream big—What’s that feeling like for you?

JC: It's very exciting. As a student, it was always a really cool experience to see professionals come in and dance. You always kind of dream that you'd one day be in that position, and it's a really sweet, full-circle moment for me coming back to NGB, coming back to the place that really kicked off my professional career. I could not have become a professional without having spent time at NGB.

TBPM: It must be so important for these young dancers to meet professionals in the field who are just like them.

JC: Absolutely. There are many people I met along the way who really influenced me. And I think, especially for boys, NGB has a huge impact.

I know that Phillip [Phillip Neal, NGB artistic director] runs a tight ship and a strong men's program. I think that what Phillip and Peter Stark, who was the director when I was at NGB … have in common is a desire to develop and create a strong men's program. That had the biggest impact on me while I was at NGB. It's always exciting for me to kind of enter an environment like that and see what it's like now and see the younger guys and be able to talk to them and answer questions and hopefully inspire them. Because that's what a lot of people did for me at that point in my training.

And we all know, guys in ballet, there aren't so many of us. So, we really have to kind of stick together.

TBPM: NGB has set the path for so many dancers. How did it build that foundation for you and help you get to where you are today with the American Ballet Theatre?

JC: I think one of the great strengths of NGB is it is really like a stepping stone. When I first went here, I would say that I was very, very far behind. Technically, I was very inexperienced. But the staff at NGB, they saw something in me, and they saw my desire to work. And we were able to work together and make a lot of progress in a very short period of time.

TBPM: Phillip, you added baby mice last year to the performance featuring the youngest dancers. Why was this so important for you to bring back?

PN: Children want to see children, right? They want to see themselves on stage and say, "Oh, that could be me." I will say we get a big enrollment bump after Nutcracker. That’s how I started to dance. The director said you could be in The Nutcracker, but you have to take a class. So I enrolled, took a couple of months of classes, and then went into Nutcracker. I just fell in love with it, and I stayed.

TBPM: The kids and students must be so excited about sharing the stage with Jared and Chloe!

PN: They are talking about it nonstop, and they're watching them on Instagram, and they're super excited, and they are very well aware of Jarod's legacy here. And Chloe is a fan favorite. You know, Chloe grew up in the Orlando area. So, Floridians know her quite well.

TBPM: That local connection must be so special to you all at NGB.

PN: I am going to enjoy going out in front of the curtain. I always give a pre-curtain speech. And, I always remind the audience—hey, I know some of you might think these are professional dancers. They are the official ballet company of The Straz Center, but they're quite young.

But this will be the first time they'll be able to go out and say, not only do we produce dancers all over the world and American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, all over, now, one has come home.

And this is what any artistic director of a school or company wants to do. They want to produce homegrown talent that circles back and sets an example. And Jarod sets an example because he's also just an extremely disciplined young man—very serious minded and gracious and modest.

JC: I'm just so excited to come back again. We'll get to dance and, and I'll get to see all my teachers at NGB, and I'll get to see Phillip, we'll just, you know, it'll just be a big reunion, and I can't wait.

ICE! Featuring Elf TM Presented by PEPSI ® at Gaylord Palms

Only in Florida can you be sliding down a waterslide in one moment and donning a heavy-duty parka in the next as you walk through a 9-degree display of ice! It’s pretty incredible when you sit back and think about it, which got us wondering … how do they do it?

We’re “breaking the ice” to learn how the Gaylord Palms creates its stunning annual ICE! event and how they bring to life the whimsical world of Buddy the Elf (TM) through magical, larger-than-life ice displays that were handcarved on-site.

ICE! by the numbers:

To create about 12 immersive scenes that make up the 20,000-square-foot frozen attraction, it took 40 world-renowned artisans 12,000+ hours to hand-carve 6,700 blocks of ice that weigh in at about 2 million pounds total!

All About the Artisans:

A team of 40 ice artisans from Harbin, China, spent a whopping six weeks hand carving the 6,700 blocks of ice this year, using a 300-page guide of notes, handmade tools and a chainsaw when needed.

Harbin, China, is known as the “Ice City” and hosts the world's largest annual ice and snow sculpting festival, so it’s safe to say the local artisans know what they’re doing. They are pretty used to the cold too, as the city stays below freezing for nearly half the year.

You might even spot them carving in the Carver’s Showcase during your visit like we did!

The Big Chill

While many places here in Florida claim to be a winter wonderland this time of year, ICE! is probably the closest you’ll get to an actual winter wonderland. A state-of-the-art chilling system keeps the 20,000 square-foot space at only 9 degrees! Incredible, right?

Colorful Creations

A food chemist came up with a special food-safe dye to ensure the ice maintains its color throughout the season. LED lights are also used.

More Fun Things to Do at ICE!:

Give the Gift of HOPE this Holiday Season at Metropolitan Ministries

HOW YOUR FAMILY CAN HELP

You can support the Holiday Tent in many ways, whether you give the gift of your time, donations and/or make a financial contribution.

This is a time of year when many families ask how they can volunteer together with the kids, and this is a perfect opportunity. Kids as young as 8 can volunteer with their parents in many volunteer roles in the holiday tents, including sorting food and toy donations, stocking shelves, and building food boxes for families. It’s truly a unique way for your family to not only volunteer together but witness the true impact of your gift of time.

If your kids are still too young, consider taking them shopping to pick up some of the most needed food items and gifts for kids like them. Make sure to bring your kids with you when you drop off the donations at the Holiday Tent so they can see the power of community at work.

If you haven’t had the chance to drop off holiday donations or volunteer your time at the Metropolitain Ministries Holiday Tent in Tampa, this is the year to do it so you can see for yourself the magic that happens when a community comes together to support one another.

What started in a small room in 1982 has grown to a tent the size of a football field that will assist more than 33,000 families this year, including 60,000 children

After experiencing back-to-back hurricanes, Metropolitan Ministries is seeing a growing need for assistance in our community this holiday season; some of those families have never had to ask for help before.

IMPACT: YOUR TIME MATTERS

MOST NEEDED ITEMS THIS YEAR

Frozen turkeys and hams, canned yams, stuffing, canned vegetables, boxed potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, cereal, rice, beans, macaroni and cheese, dessert mixes, gift cards, toys/gifts for children ages 4-17

You can also shop the virtual store at metromin.org/holidaystore or make a monetary donation, which is being matched this year by a generous donor fir double the impact

DIY UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER FOR KIDS

SUPPLIES

• Mini canvas

• Paper plate

• Scissors

• Paint (1-3 shades of green)

• Mini red pom poms

• Ribbon

• Ultra fine glitter (optional)

• Pencil

• Glue

DIRECTIONS

1. Use the pencil to draw a small circle on the mini canvas. This will help children know where to add their fingerprints.

2. Add green paint to a paper plate. You can use between 1-3 shades of green paint for the wreath.

3. Now it’s time to paint! Dip one finger in any shade of green paint on the paper plate,

and then dab it onto the circle on the canvas. Alternate the colors for the wreath.

4. If you want to add a little sparkle to your wreath, sprinkle glitter over the wreath while it’s still wet. Then set the canvas aside to dry completely.

5. Glue mini red pompoms on the wreath to represent berries.

6. Finally, use ribbon to create a bow, then glue it to the top of the wreath. Cut another piece of ribbon to glue at the back of the canvas to complete your ornament. Allow it to dry for at least 15 minutes before hanging the ornament on the Christmas tree.

8 Tips for Creating a Family Cookbook

This holiday season, the most cherished gift is one that can’t be bought in any store: a family cookbook.

“It’s a super-special thing to have,” says Janet Keeler, Eckerd College food journalism instructor and author of “Cookielicious: 150 Fabulous Recipes to Bake & Share.”

Here are some tips for putting together your own family recipe collection:

1. Find your why.

What is your goal? To compile recipes that anyone can replicate? To make a place to collect family memories? Or both? Knowing your “why” will help you home in on an approach.

2. Start early.

Writing a cookbook is no small task. (Trust me on this.) If you can’t pull it off in time for this year’s holiday gifts, then start strategizing for next year. Ask relatives to bring recipes and photos to this year’s holiday dinner. While everyone is gathered around the table, pull out your phone and record videos or voice memos as folks recall their fondest food memories. Use these stories in the recipes’ headnotes. The cookbook will make a great gift to distribute next holiday season, at an upcoming family reunion or anytime.

3. Gather the recipes.

Look through family recipe boxes, newspaper clippings and favorite cookbooks. Narrow them down to a few dozen favorites so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Organize the recipes by category, such as appetizers, main dishes and desserts.

4. Work smarter, not harder.

Use an online service like Shutterfly or Mixbook, which allow you to design the cookbook and print multiple copies at the touch of a button. And don’t go it alone. “It’s a good idea if you can enlist some help,” Keeler says, noting that kids and teens can be quite useful. “Somebody has to be in charge, though.”

5. Tweak old recipes.

Generations ago, cookbook authors assumed that readers had basic kitchen skills. But “Cook the casserole ‘til it’s done” won’t fly today. Test the recipes so your directions will be as precise as possible: “Bake the casserole at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown.” Also, update any out-of-date ingredients. “Nobody cooks with margarine anymore,” Keeler notes.

6. Be specific.

The “handful of flour” and “scoop of butter” in Aunt Myrtle’s poundcake – how much is that, exactly? And what kind? If Aunt Myrtle is still living, then follow her around the kitchen as she makes the cake, so you can write down exact ingredients. Afterward, take a photo together with the finished cake. If she’s deceased, then enlist a few recipe testers to come to a consensus on the recipe.

7. Include photos of hand-written recipes.

A hand-written recipe is a cherished family heirloom, says Chef Judi Gallagher of Sarasota, author of the cookbook “Reflections & Recipes of Chef Judi.” She recalls stumbling across a recipe card that contained her late sister’s penmanship. “When I saw that with her handwriting after she had passed, it felt like a warm hug from her,” Gallagher says. “You see the food in the corner of the card, because they'd been using it so much and maybe touching it when they were cooking.”

8. Go high-tech.

To bring old family recipes into the 21st century, consider making a website. In addition to the recipes, it can contain videos of food demonstrations, relatives telling stories about their favorite dishes and space for family members to comment on the recipes.

Dalia Colón is the author of “The Florida Vegetarian Cookbook,” which is available at local retailers including Oxford Exchange, Tombolo Books, Black English Bookstore and more. It is also available online via University Press of Florida, Barnes and Noble, Target, Thriftbooks and other websites. It makes a great gift.

Soaring to the SKIES… and the STARS at MOSI

If you haven't been to MOSI in a while, a lot has changed in the last year. There are new exhibits to experience as a family, including ones that will walk you through the history of flight and even soar you into the future beyond our planet.

MOSI's CEO, John Graydon Smith, is taking us on a tour of some of these new and revamped exhibit spaces, and even sharing some big news that will launch you to the stars in 2025.

AVIATION EVOLUTION MAZE

THE DRONE ZONE

“Here in the Drone Zone, which is presented by Suncoast Credit Union, it’s ‘Let the Dreams of the Future Take Flight.’ It's a great experience. Our instructors are teaching you how to fly drones. We're also doing it in camps, so trying to really get kids connected with not just drones for fun but also drones and careers.”

“Here, you can learn all about the history of flight with a focus on Tampa, so Tampa International and MacDill AFB. We've got a real experimental aircraft, the Falcon, and we've got the model of the eVTOL flying, electric vertical takeoff and landing kind of air taxi of the future. Lots of drones, all kinds of different aircraft throughout history where you can see models … you can see the real thing. It's pretty amazing.”

BE AN ASTRONAUT

“You end the maze with the Be the Astronaut experience and program a flight to the moon or Mars. This exhibit was developed in coordination with NASA, so this isn't made up. This is real science. You’ve got to check your systems; you've got to make sure your support systems are all in place before you launch because if you don’t, you'll crash your aircraft.

You can spend hours just going through every step; you could spend an entire day back here just in Be the Astronaut. So it gets kids and their adults thinking about what the future of flight is going to look like as well.”

LAUNCH TO THE FUTURE AT MISSION: MOONBASE

“You can do your simulated moon launch here [at Be the Astronaut] and then take your launch into Mission: Moonbase; fast forward to 2070 Mission MoonBase when we've colonized the moon, and it comes full circle, which is why this is positioned where it is on the exhibit path.”

“Coming in 2025 is the reopening of MOSI’s iconic blue dome. It will reopen as an 8K digital dome theater and planetarium. It will seat more than 300 people and will be the second-largest of its kind in the country. It'll be a massive, immersive experience.

You can go to outer space and underwater, educational films as well as entertaining laser music shows. We can put pretty much any content up in that theater. It's going to be a game changer for MOSI, for the area up here in this whole Uptown area, and for Tampa Bay in general to have the largest in the state of Florida here in our backyard. It’s going to be a great experience for all ages.

I mean, we can take you anywhere on the planet at any time throughout history and show you what the night sky looks like in a massive crystal-clear format. You can see the night sky better in there than you can in real life. So it's just an incredible experience that we're happy to bring to Tampa in 2025.”

10 Tips to Achieving Family Goals in 2025

Helping kids set goals for the new year is a wonderful way to build lifelong skills and strengthen family bonds. Family goal setting, especially around New Year's, allows everyone to support each other’s growth, dream big together and celebrate achievements along the way.

Here are 10 key tips to make the process developmentally appropriate, engaging and meaningful for the whole family:

Explain the Importance of Goal Setting:

Introduce the idea that goals are exciting, personal achievements to aim for. Use examples to show how goals can help everyone grow, improve and have fun together.

Make it a Family Tradition:

Use New Year’s as a time to set individual and family goals, creating a shared experience that builds togetherness. Consider one or two family-specific goals, like doing a fun activity weekly to bond over shared successes or doing a family game night once per week.

Set Age-Appropriate Goals:

Tailor goals to each child’s developmental level. Younger kids can work on simple, daily tasks like brushing their teeth without reminders, while older kids might set goals around hobbies or personal projects.

Introduce SMART Goals:

For older kids, break down goals using SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound). Teaching them how to set detailed, realistic goals helps them understand how to follow through.

Create Visual Reminders:

Use charts, checklists or vision boards to make the goals more tangible and exciting for kids. Placing the goals somewhere visible helps them stay engaged and track their progress.

Break Big Goals into Small Steps:

Help kids take on big goals by breaking them down into smaller, achievable steps. This approach reduces overwhelm, builds confidence and allows them to feel successful with each milestone.

Incorporate Regular Check-Ins:

Schedule family check-ins, like weekly dinners or monthly chats, to review everyone’s progress. This routine builds accountability, offers encouragement and lets family members celebrate one another’s progress.

Teach a Growth Mindset:

Emphasize the importance of trying your best and persevering through challenges. Praise their efforts, resilience and any growth along the way to foster confidence and motivation.

Reward Progress:

Set up a rewards system for consistent effort and accomplishments, which could include verbal praise, a sticker chart or family fun days. Recognizing progress, big or small, reinforces motivation.

Celebrate Together at Year-End:

Hold an end-of-year family celebration to recognize everyone’s hard work, reflect on the year and set new goals. This builds a positive outlook on goal setting, making it a tradition that kids look forward to each New Year.

By incorporating these tips, goal setting becomes an opportunity for families to bond, build life skills and nurture each other’s dreams, creating lasting traditions that everyone can look forward to. For more pediatric healthcare news and stories, visit HopkinsAllChildrens.org/stories.

HCPS Students are Laying Down the Law!

When local lawmakers present bills during the next legislative session, several of them will be courtesy of students from Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Each year, our school district partners with local lawmakers for an event called “Ought to be a Law.” Students from Hillsborough County high schools brainstorm ideas they think should become Florida law, and then they pitch them to local lawmakers and school board members.

These presentations are quite thorough.

The students explain their ideas, discuss resources and funding their ideas would require, and then create an in-depth PowerPoint presentation.

Each year, there’s one winner, whose idea will be sponsored by a local lawmaker.

However, our students are stepping up their games. This year, we had seven schools compete, and three of their proposals will be sponsored during the legislative session.

Representative Susan Valdés, who has been a loyal proponent of this event for several years, along with Senator Jay Collins and Representative Traci Koster, will sponsor the bill proposal from Jefferson High School called Smart Living. The bill would require all high schools to offer a mandatory class for seniors to help them prepare for life after graduation.

The team from Jefferson really impressed the panelists with a semester-by-semester outline of classes that would help prepare seniors for career planning and financial literacy in the real world.

The team from Bloomingdale High School also impressed the panel, and especially Representative Dianne Hart, who will sponsor their bill presentation called The Green Business Act. The Act would incentivize businesses to increase recycling to the 75% goal that the Department of Environmental Protection implemented. The Act would mandate that Florida offer tax incentives for businesses that increase their recycling rate.

And lastly, the team from Sumner High School got the attention of Senator Jay Collins and Representative Danny Alvarez with their bill proposal. It’s called the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission. This bill would mandate that one person at each school site be trained in counseling and enrolling students from military families.

Our students in Hillsborough County Public Schools are making a difference—not just at their schools, but also at the state level. These teams will now work with lawmakers and begin the process of watching their bill work its way through the House and Senate.

The “Ought to be a Law” event is held each year, and every Hillsborough County Public high school can take part. So, if you have a younger student, encourage them to start thinking of ways they want to change the world… or at least change Florida law… and maybe one day they can pitch their proposals to Tallahassee as well!

The team from Lennard High School presents its bill proposal, Driving Under the Influence.
The team from Sickles High School presents its bill proposal, which is called Caring Closet.
Representative Dianne Hart poses with the team from Bloomingdale High School whose bill she will sponsor.

Navigating Parents’ Digital Dilemma

Whether it’s a video game, smart toy or cell phone, chances are your child’s Christmas list includes technology. For parents hesitant to cave in for fear of exposing their children to the dangers of the digital world, Tampa Bay mom and digital media expert Natalie Zfat says there’s a safe, balanced solution.

MR: Tech gets a bad rap when it comes to children. Can it be a good thing?

NZ: Fifty-seven percent of kids (and also 41% of adults) want to be an influencer for a living. Rather than fight the tide, it’s on us as parents to approach technology and social media from a balanced perspective.

I know young women who have put themselves through college by publishing makeup tutorials on YouTube. Other young folks I know have developed unbridled confidence – and public speaking skills – by learning how to film and edit videos of themselves online.

So whether your kid is virtually assembling Legos or filming a tutorial of how they paint a pumpkin (hopefully not in your living room), the confidence they can build learning to speak to a camera is priceless.

MR: What are your top tech toy suggestions for kids this holiday season?

NZ: Ditch the latest and greatest robot ball or video game apparatus that your kids will love (and leave) within a week.

Instead, give your kids that old iPhone you’re about to trade in – internet disabled if need be – and let them take a pass at taking photos. Or

filming a play in your living room. You don’t need the phone, and your kid will be overjoyed. Throw in a tripod for an older child, and let them start messing around with framing and composition.

Even if your kids never make it as influencers (which, let’s face it - most won’t) – in 2024, it’s not a bad thing that your children learn how to speak directly to a camera and develop a modicum of photography, video and editing skills.

MR: Please share your tips for making sure your child isn’t glued 24/7 to that new video game or whatever the toy is?

NZ: I got my first computer at five and built a six-figure-dollar social media business by 25. These facts are mutually exclusive.

My advice to parents is to spend less time policing the quantity of technology time your kid has, and focus more of the quality of what their kids are doing during their technology time.

Learning how to code or play video games focused on problem solving at an early age can only enhance a digital career path.

MR: The risks associated with social media are welldocumented and cause many parents to hesitate to allow their children to join that world. What’s your advice?

NZ: It’s a matter of when – not if – your child joins social media. It’s our job as parents to help them navigate it safely.

Talk to your children about the dangers of social media before they join. This includes catfishing – a predator pretending to be someone they aren’t – and cyberbullying, which can often have the same effect on your child as in-person bullying.

Educate your kids about the types of things that are appropriate and inappropriate to post. Remind them that posts and pictures can be stored on the internet forever, even if they are deleted. And something that might seem benign to post now could feel very different in 10 years.

Finally, teach your kids to be aware of their lived experience. If a certain person made your kid feel bad about themselves, you’d encourage them to take space. The same advice can be applied if certain app or platform doesn’t make them feel good, either.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

• Check your children's social media settings.

• Keep pages private (for kids under 18).

• Make sure kids are not accepting follows from people they don’t know.

• Ensure their location is set to private.

• Ensure that a parent has every login and password to every account for their child under 18.

Moms to Know

Souad Dreyfus

Dreams do come true in the United States of America, and Souad Dreyfus’ life work is proof of this. As the founder of Open Arms Surrogacy, she works with individuals and couples from all over the world with big plans and high hopes of creating a family. Through innovative reproductive technologies, favorable surrogacy laws and generous gestational carriers and egg donors, Souad guides people from across the globe on their path to parenthood. With two children of her own, this local mom has followed a calling of connecting the most selfless women with the most optimistic mothers and fathers through the birth dates of some of the most wished for babies.

TBPM: Over 20 years ago, you created something that changes lives every single day. Tell us how you became interested in surrogacy and how Open Arms came to be.

SD: Over 20 years ago, my story took a transformative turn when I crossed paths with a fertility specialist who recruited me to work with him. This opportunity exposed me to the intimate, emotional journeys of countless individuals and couples striving to become parents. Witnessing their struggles, their resilience, and ultimately, the transformative joy of parenthood achieved through egg donation and surrogacy, ignited a deep passion in me to support others on this profound journey. So in 2003, I parted ways with the clinical side of this process and started Open Arms Surrogacy.

TBPM: With so many babies born year after year, your career must be full of so much joy! Please share your favorite memories with us.

SD: The journey of surrogacy/egg donation has been an avenue of incredible joy not just for the parents but equally for me. Each successful birth is a profound reminder of why we do what we do. Among my cherished memories is witnessing parents meet their baby for the first time. The overwhelming happiness and tears of joy never fail to reinforce the beautiful impact of our work. These moments, filled with pure love and gratitude, are what I hold dear from my career.

TBPM: How do you get connected with potential surrogates or families seeking surrogacy?

SD: Often through word of mouth, which is my favorite because it reflects the trust and satisfaction of those we’ve worked with. Additionally, we receive many referrals from fertility specialists and OBGYNs and maintain a strong online presence, ensuring we’re accessible to families worldwide. We engage actively on social media, which has become a crucial platform for connecting with new clients and sharing the successes of our surrogates and families.

TBPM: In what ways do you see current legislation directly affecting your business/clients?

SD: Current legislation, particularly regarding reproductive and abortion laws, directly affects our clients and the decisions they face. We strive to navigate these challenges by providing informed, supportive and

adaptable services to ensure that every family can make the best decisions for their circumstances. Although the legal environment can be complex, our commitment to our clients’ rights and choices remains unwavering.

TBPM: As a thought leader, business mentor, and industry expert, what is next for you and for your company?

SD: Looking ahead, my primary goal remains to serve and support families, egg donors and surrogates with the highest level of care and integrity. The private and sensitive nature of fertility struggles demands nothing less. I am committed to continuously enhancing our services and outreach, ensuring that more families can experience the joy of parenthood through third party reproduction.

TBPM: Talk to us about moving a child to college this semester. How has your transition been, and what does that adjustment look like?

SD: Sending my daughter off to college has been a bittersweet transition. While Tallahassee isn’t too far, the adjustment to her independence has been both challenging and rewarding. Despite the distance, our bond remains strong through frequent calls, texts and visits. It's thrilling to watch her grow and navigate her own path, although the parental instinct to protect and guide is ever-present.

TBPM: When your daughter is in town, what are your favorite things to do in Tampa Bay with her and your son?

SD: My daughter is a foodie, so when she is in town, exploring new spots in Tampa is our favorite activity. Last time we went to Cats and Caffeine and that was particularly memorable. How could it not be with the playful company of cute kittens?

Nola Schoos Kids to Know:

In September 2024, many lives were forever changed by the unexpected and catastrophic effects of Hurricane Helene. Today, as much of Tampa Bay continues to recover and rebuild from back-to-back natural disasters, it’s promising to find so many families coming together to support one another. From retelling stories of that fateful night and swapping referrals for insurance contacts and contractor leads, to distributing supplies and resources to neighbors along the way, the adult community has forged special bonds through shared experiences. Yet, there is another point of view that is just as important and noteworthy. For the perspective of a natureloving, animal-saving and beach-going child that was also affected by recent events, please meet 7-year old Nola Schoos.

TBPM: Tell us about yourself.

NS: My name is Nola. I like to play, and to play with my kitties (Gilligan, MaryAnn, Mrs. Howell and Alex). I like unicorns and cats, and I like the beach. My favorite food is salmon (and candy!).

TBPM: Can you share more about your experience on the Junior Color Guard.

NS: I like Color Guard! I started in kindergarten, so this year will be my third year. My favorite part about Color Guard is the flags.

TBPM: We all love the beach, but you have a very special relationship with it. Please explain what you do to clean our beaches, protect marine wildlife and who you partner with.

NS: I go with Mama to beach cleanups. It makes me feel good to clean up the beach because turtles could eat the trash on the beach and get hurt. My favorite part about the beach is swimming and playing in the water, and cleaning up the beach helps the water stay clean. We love joining Trash Turtles for their clean-up events!

TBPM: What do you want to be when you grow up?

NS: When I grow up, I want to work at the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary and at Nachman’s Seafood because they’re both fun! I like the birds, especially Meatball (the spoonbill) at the Seabird Sanctuary. Nachman’s has yummy fish and they let me help out sometimes.

TBPM: Living in Redington Shores means your home had some damage after the hurricanes. What happened to your family and your neighbors?

NS: Some of our neighbors got water in their garages, and some of them of them got flooded a lot. My Nana’s house in Tampa got water in it—she showed me pictures. We got

a lot of water in our house, but they’re going to make it brand new!

TBPM: How is life different for you today after Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton?

NS: We live in an apartment right now and we’re up high. I kinda like living here (near downtown St. Pete), but I miss our neighbors. We don’t have a backyard right now, and I’m sharing a bedroom with mommy and daddy. I miss my room.

TBPM: Many children will never know what it’s like to experience a hurricane. What is something you learned from it?

NS: In a hurricane, sometimes your house can get flooded, and sometimes it won’t. It can make you feel sad.

TBPM: When your house is ready to move back into, what will you be most excited to do first?

NS: I’m most excited for my bedroom! Also, to have more space to play, our patio, and to play on the beach again.

TBPM: What is your favorite thing to do in Tampa Bay with your parents?

NS: My favorite things to do with mommy and daddy are going to Sky Zone, getting popsicles at Hyppo and playing on the playground at Redington Beach Town Park.

Give the Gift of Swimming this Holiday Season at Watermelon Swim

So, this holiday season, why not do something different? Give the gift of swimming; a gift that will last a lifetime. Stop in any of our four locations or visit watermelonswim.com/gift-swim to purchase a gift certificate today.

The holidays are in full swing, and here at Watermelon Swim, that means it’s Giving Season. This December our mission is to give back to the community that has supported us in so many ways. Since 2007, our annual Giving Tree program has helped hundreds of Tampa Bay families in need by ensuring that underserved communities have access to holiday gifts, meals, clothing and more. This year we are taking it a step further by providing families in need with what we do best, the gift of swimming!

When you give the gift of swimming, you are not just setting a child up for a lifetime of safety and success in the water. You are also giving the gift of confidence, the gift of independence, and the gift of development.

According to groundbreaking research led by Griffith University, children who swim demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than children who do not. The findings of a four-year project by the Griffith Institute for Educational Research have surpassed expectations and indicate that swimming children have many advantages when starting school, regardless of socio-economic background.

According to the study, children who had participated in formal swim lessons were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the non-swimming population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions. The study found that children were seven months ahead in motor development and scored significantly better in visual-motor skills such as cutting paper, coloring in and drawing lines and shapes.

The students who participated in early swimming lessons were also months ahead in social and emotional development. The benefits of socialization in child development are endless; socialization teaches teamwork and how to encourage others, make responsible decisions, welcome differences and so much more.

Holiday Toy Safety Guide: Top 10 Toy Dangers

The holidays are a time for joy and happiness. But sometimes, toys bought by family members and parents to bring happiness and smiles can instead cause tears and an unexpected trip to the hospital.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 200,000 children are treated in hospital emergency departments for toy-related injuries each year. Many times, toys designed for older children have multiple small pieces that pose a choking hazard for children under the age of 3 who still tend to put things in their mouths. That’s why parents should pay attention to the recommended ages on the outside of the box as well as the child’s wish list. E-scooters, e-bikes and hoverboards are also responsible for an increase in trips to the emergency center.

Parents should always keep an eye out for product safety recalls and consider throwing out broken toys that could cause falls or lacerations.

If a toy does not look safe or age appropriate for your child, then don’t buy it. Make sure to check online product reviews. If purchasing from an online marketplace, check CPSC.gov/recalls.

Below is a list of the top 10 dangers parents and family members should keep in mind when choosing toys to gift this holiday season:

Choking hazards from small parts: This includes small balls or marbles. If a toy part can fit through a standard toilet paper roll, it is a potential choking hazard for children age 3 and younger. As uninflated balloons may accidentally be swallowed and block the airway, balloons and small balls should also not be given to children younger than 6.

E-bikes, e-scooters and hoverboards: Fires are a significant hazard with micromobility devices. These devices are also quick and silent, which can make it hard for others to see a rider. Helmets should always be worn when using these as well as manual bikes, scooters or roller blades or skates.

Magnets: Magnets are becoming smaller and more powerful. When two or more are ingested, they can bind together and cause serious intestinal damage. Keep magnetic items intended for adults, as well as toys with magnets that could come loose, away from children.

Batteries: If swallowed, batteries can leak acid causing severe injury. Button batteries are in many toys and are easy for young children to swallow. Additionally, some toys have rechargeable batteries that require USB charging cables, which can cause burns if overheated.

High levels of chemicals: Phthalates (often found in certain plastics) and lead (commonly in paint and jewelry items) can adversely affect development. Some slime toys may contain high levels of boron or borax, which is toxic if ingested.

Excessive noise: Young children have delicate eardrums, and toys that are too loud can damage hearing. If it sounds too loud, it probably is.

Foam Toys: Injuries are seen from foam projectiles every year. Although they are soft to the touch, they can cause significant damage to the eye. If the children are using any sort of gun that shoots, it is important that they wear protective eye wear. Many foam guns come with protective glasses; the key is enforcing that children wear them.

Toys with long strings and straps: Strings and straps that are part of the toy could strangle small children.

Stuffed toys: Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant. Stuffed toys should be washable.

Crayons and paints: Crayons and paints should say “nontoxic” and “ASTM D-4236” on the package, which means that they've been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
