When you’re buying for children under 3, make sure the toy has no pieces small enough to fit in a toilet paper roll (anything smaller than 1.5 inches). Barbie shoes, Lego pieces, coins, marbles and little bouncy balls may be potential choking hazards. If you’re buying for an infant, make sure you pick something that can easily be cleaned off—especially if you have a little teether in the house.

2. Buy a helmet with a riding toy. “If you are planning

to surprise your child with a new bike, skateboard, scooter or other riding equipment, be sure to include a certified helmet to keep them safe while they are having fun riding their new toy,” Layton says. Safe Kids USA states that more children ages 5 to 14 are seen in emergency rooms for biking-related injuries than any other sport. Although helmets can reduce the risk of severe brain injuries by 88 percent, only 45 percent of children 14 and under usually wear a bike helmet, even though it is the law in Florida to wear one if you’re 16 or younger.

s adults, we know that the true meaning of the holidays is family togetherness and a deeper spiritual connection—but try and tell that to the 5-year-old who’s been agonizing over her list. For little ones, there’s undeniable magic in finding a wondrous toy under the tree. And for many parents, the secret hunt for the ideal toy is as much part of the festive season as holiday cards and family fun. However, the truth is that not all toys are made equal. According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 251,000 children were taken to emergency rooms in 2014 for toy-related injuries. Most of these were lacerations, contusions or abrasions, and most of the injuries were also to the face and head area. No one wants to spend precious holiday hours stuck in the ER—so keep these handy tips from Pediatric Wellness and Safety Expert Rebecca Layton of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in mind when shopping for little ones to ensure that their December is as safe as it is fun. 1. pick

the right toy for the child's age and developmental ability. Those “For Age” labels

on the toy? They’re there for a reason. Make sure you choose something that is within your child’s age range, even if it may seem babyish and you feel your child could play with something more advanced. On the other hand, a toy may fit your child’s age, but may be too hard to play with, leading to frustration or injury. “Sometimes a child may fit the age requirement but developmentally may not be able to use the toy,” says Layton. “Look at the details and think about the child you are shopping for.” Layton also advises parents to read all the instructions and labels before leaving the store.

Layton recommends wearing helmets for all wheeled activities, including skateboarding and scooters. And though it may be tempting to buy a larger size that the child can “grow into,” Layton advises against that. Proper fit is crucial in protecting young heads and the brains inside.

3. Avoid small parts, strings, sharp edges and balloons that can lurk in surprising places. Even

an innocuous teddy bear can pose a hazard if it has an unsecured ribbon around its neck that a child can slip off, or small button eyes or nose that can be pried off by insistent little fingers. Flying toy parts can smack a child in the eye. Don’t buy toys for little ones that have ribbons or strings longer than 7 inches. Most of all, beware of small batteries. “If the toy has high powered magnets or batteries, be sure that they are secured within the toy,” says Layton. “If magnets or batteries are ingested, serious injuries may occur. Battery buttons can become lodged in the child’s throat. It can cause chemical burns and potentially internal damage. If your child swallows a battery button or battery of any size, call your local poison control center (800-222-1222).” Another hazard? The toy’s plastic wrapping: Dispose of this immediately.

4. Sign up to receive product safety recalls at recalls.gov or safekids.org. Keep track and get rid of

or replace toys that have been recalled. You can also go on the Consumer Product Safety website and check on any used toys you may have bought to ensure they have all the needed parts.

5. Store toys after playing with them. Keep bins or

other storage options handy so children can put away their toys when they’re done playing. Older kids should especially be taught to do this so younger siblings don’t crawl over and pop a little toy piece in their mouth and choke. Also, monitor toys regularly and make sure to throw away anything broken or ripped. Most of all, Layton would like to see parents spend their time choosing toys that encourage physical activity, imaginative play and early reading rather than picking up something pretty that’s battery operated. Always remember, says Layton: “There’s no substitution for adult supervision.”

I utilize the hard drive so that I can free up memory space on my computer. I also take photos of my son's artwork and holiday craft projects on a plain white poster board if it is something I may not be planning on keeping and that way, I have a record of it for memory's sake. I sometimes will sprinkle them into the yearly albums or may eventually make one devoted to that when he gets older.

In your new book "Grace. Not perfection," you point out

that no planner is going to change your life or find you more time. As an entrepreneur and mother, what advice can you share about how you find balance in your life and family schedule?

I really believe every mom has to find her own system that works for her family and their lifestyle. As the creator of the Simplified Planner, I know firsthand that the “battle for joy is fought on the pages of our calendars” (one of my favorite quotes by Bob Goff). But planners and systems aren’t going to miraculously provide balance. You have to decisively and intentionally commit to putting the system you choose to work for you and making it part of your daily routines. Additionally, sometimes our lack of organizational tools isn’t the problem—it’s our overabundance of commitments, appointments, meetings and practices. Every few months, I take inventory of our lives to be sure we’re committed in all

the right places and still have enough white space on our calendars to enjoy each other, to be creative, and to play.

Your Simplified planner is a favorite among many women here in Tampa Bay? What is so unique about your planner?

Thank you! I’m so proud of the Simplified Planner. I created it very minimally on purpose, without all the bells and whistles many other planners I’d tried have. Both our weekly and daily editions include five key pieces: space for your schedule, your to-do list, notes, dinner and an inspirational quote on every page. Beyond those few things, the Simplified Planner has space for you to make it your own. I’ve seen women turn their daily schedule into a place to take notes. I’ve seen them use the dinner box to track exercise and water intake. I’ve seen women use the notes section as a place to capture memories made that day. I just love seeing how women use the Simplified Planner to its fullest potential. Some of my favorite social media posts I’ve seen show messy

pages with lots of color coding and stickers and tons of writing. If you don’t get your planner messy and make it work for you, it’ll sit on a shelf looking pretty.

Schedules are one thing, but the home is whole new ball game! Any tips on organizing at home?

Whew! Yes. I really embrace a “less is more” philosophy here. Physical clutter is mental clutter to me. So weekly (if not daily) I make a sweep of our common areas and find things to donate. This practice has really impacted my buying philosophies. If it’s just another cute knick-knack, I probably don’t need it (it’ll probably end up in the donate pile eventually). But if it’s a “treasure” or an heirloom, I’ll think twice. Practicing the art of clearing the clutter regularly helps keep my home feeling fresh and clutter free. In turn, that helps my mind stay clear of distractions and overwhelm.

Dinnertime seems to be a big stressor for many parents! What are some of your favorite quick and easy meals to prepare for your family?

Dinnertime is a big stressor for me ESPECIALLY because I don’t love to cook. One of my dear friends started Clean Plate Cooking, a wholesale Tampa-based dinner service. We order food from CPC two or three times a week (they deliver!). For the rest of the week, I stick to simple, healthy, comfort foods. I love SkinnyTaste and 100 Days of Real Food for their delicious, easy-to-make recipes.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids in Tampa Bay? We have three little ones under the age of 6 (including two toddlers!) so we love the Glazer Children’s Museum, the Florida Aquarium, and, of course, our public library. We also have a lot of really great parks nearby that we love to visit. Sometimes we’ll pick up breakfast and coffee on a Saturday morning and head to the park to enjoy the weather before it gets too warm.

Holiday Sugar Cookies with Silly Monkey Cookie Company! With Bill and Dulcinea Kimrey

OUR FAVORITE RECIPE Royal Icing: We prefer this recipe because it uses meringue powder rather than egg whites. Beat 2 cups of confectioners sugar, 1 ½ tablespoons of meringue powder and 3 tablespoons of warm water with mixer for about 5-7 minutes until stiff peaks form. If the icing is too thin, add more confectioners sugar and continue to beat until the stiff peaks form. If too thin, add a few drops of water, but not too much. Add a few drops of clear vanilla or almond extract for flavor. Divide icing into small bowls and tint icing with food coloring. Finally, put the icing into pastry bags and decorate! Super Simple Sugar Cookies: Preheat oven to 400F. Sift 2 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour and 2 teaspoons of baking powder and set aside. Using an electric mixer, beat 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of sugar until smooth. Then beat in 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Slowly add one cup of the dry mixture until completely mixed. Divide the dough into two balls and use a rolling pin to roll out the dough on a floured surface until the dough is about 1/8 inch thick. Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes and bake on a greased cookie sheet or parchment paper for 6-10 minutes or until light brown! Allow to cool on cooling rack and then decorate!

rowing up in Great Neck, New York, wasn’t easy for Wendy Rice because of a problem sustained during her birth that left her right side “droopy.” Although the active, determined little girl went on to disprove doctors who said she might not be able to run or do physical activities like other children, Rice struggled with ADHD. She struggled to keep her room tidy, follow instructions in school and study. It wasn’t until she started spending time with horses that she had her “aha” moment. Her love for animals was a critical piece of her development that helped her understand that intelligence comes in many forms and led her to a career spent helping others make those discoveries for themselves. “When I put the birth injury pieces together and realized that it really, really wasn’t my fault, I also realized that I had at least one great skill: I could intuitively understand people and their problems, just as I’d always done with horses,” writes Rice in her upcoming book, “More than One Thing.” “Because I get learning, memory, attention and even emotional difficulties from the inside out, I have an uncanny ability to understand and explain those problems to those who also experience them. That synergy, that connection, is what it’s all about for me.” Rice went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College and master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from Yeshiva University in New York City. She also completed postdoctoral programs in psychodynamic psychotherapy and in clinical neuropsychology. After living and practicing in Manhattan for ten years, she moved to Tampa in 2000 to be closer to family and founded Rice Psychology Group, which has offices in North and South Tampa. She loves to travel—and particularly loved her recent African safaris—and enjoys time with family and friends. A competitive amateur equestrian, two of the most important people in Rice’s life are her horse, Caspar, and English goldendoodle, Milo.

What is your proudest moment?

After my first year of graduate school, I was sure I couldn’t become a psychologist. It was just too hard: the ink blots, the statistics, the report writing – but somehow, I knew there would be a light at the end of the tunnel! And then my brother suggested that I move to Tampa. “Hang out a shingle and you’ll be fine; you’re from New York,” he said – and I did! Looking back, I cannot count the number of individuals, families, professionals and even schools I have touched over the past 20 years. Those are truly my proudest moments.

What is your biggest achievement?

Utilizing my own struggles as a way to help others. It was a huge decision for me whether or not to reveal that I have ADHD, but when I looked back, I realized that not only have I come out okay, I’m a better psychologist for having lived my particular life. I serve others and help them to see what is possible when they understand their own strengths and challenges, or those of their children or loved ones. This thing that I used to be afraid to share is one of the reasons that folks seek me out. It helps people to see how they can succeed in spite of and even because of their condition.

although I am Jewish. I give and receive Chanukah and Christmas gifts – and I love it! The holidays are an important time for me to celebrate what is important to all of the people I know.

What is your happiest holiday memory?

Celebrating Chanukah with all of my nieces and nephews when they were younger because it was so easy to find fun gifts for them that they really enjoyed. One year I wanted an iPod and my nephew thought I needed to have a full line of American Girl dolls so he brought me a doll, the horse, the dog and an outfit. This didn’t happen to me as a child; this happened just a few years ago when I was already solidly in my 40’s! One of my most memorable holiday memories is of when I took Milo to a soup kitchen on Christmas Day – being a psychologist, my tendency is to help, and this is what I did.

There are two sides to the holiday. On the personal side, I like to light the menorah, enjoy singing the prayers and love gift exchanges and latkes (potato pancakes) with apple sauce. The other side is the professional: Dr. Wendy Rice who sends gifts and cards to those who matter and receives gifts and well wishes. I love to celebrate the amazing people who make Rice Psychology Group their work family. We always have a holiday gathering (the past few years at my house) which is a time to celebrate each other, bring our significant others together, and of course eat, drink and be merry.

Next Generation Ballet Delivers a Holiday Favorite The Straz Center for the Performing Arts’ Next Generation Ballet (NGB) presents “The Nutcracker” in Carol Morsani Hall at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, and 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18. American Ballet Theatre (ABT) principal dancers Isabella Boylston and James Whiteside and the award-winning dancers of NGB will perform with a cast of nearly 175 dancers, gymnasts and other guest artists in the extravaganza. “Nutcracker” was choreographed by former NGB Artistic Director Peter Stark with a few new additions by current NGB Artistic Director Philip Neal and is designed by Thom J. Hit the Hiking Trails, Hillsborough Families! This fall, Hillsborough County’s Parks & Recreation unveiled a new program that encourages people to exercise and experience nature by exploring its numerous parks and preserves. The Hiking Spree 2017 program features 19 hikes, and those who complete at least eight of them between Nov. 1 and March 31 will earn a patch or a medallion for a walking stick from the department. Hikes range in length from less than half a mile to four miles and include such popular regional parks as Lettuce Lake, Upper Tampa Bay and Lithia Springs, as well as lesser known but equally scenic parks like the Blackwater Creek and Alafia Scrub preserves. Each of the 19 trails is rated for its difficulty (easy, moderate or strenuous), and participants in the program are also allowed to create one other trail of their choice. The Hiking Spree program is designed to introduce people to the County’s diverse parks and preserves spread across the region and encourage people to explore new areas as well as hike near home. CDS Students Embark on Service Learning Trip In early October, 52 enthusiastic Carrollwood Day School (CDS) juniors and seniors and four faculty chaperones packed their suitcases with school supplies and traveled to Nicaragua to volunteer as part of the Outreach360 program. Founded in 1995 as Orphanage Outreach to assist an orphanage in the Dominican Republic, the volunteer program transformed into Outreach360 in 2011 and expanded its efforts to support neighboring communities with a focus on education, including English, literacy and community health. In their recent trip to join Outreach360, the group of passionate teens from CDS spent a week in the rural, central highland town of Jinotega and surrounding areas working with impoverished youth to help empower them. The recent CDS visit represented the largest volunteer group Outreach360 has worked with in Nicaragua to date. As an International Baccalaureate World School, this service-learning trip serves as a capstone experience for many of the school’s Diploma Programme students. Students worked alongside long-term volunteers from Outreach 360 teaching conversational English to local children through games and songs. In addition to volunteering, the students got to experience authentic culture and real-world immersion through activities and excursions planned by their hosts. This is the fourth year that CDS high school students have partnered with Outreach360. CDS students alternate volunteering at Outreach360 learning centers in Nicaragua and Dominican Republic each year. Local Student Selected as Special presidential Advisor Logan Beatty, a 9th grade Land O’ Lakes High School International Baccalaureate® student, recently visited The White House as one of President Barack Obama’s Kid Science Advisors. The White House chose Logan for this honor based on his Kid Science Advisor Initiative Essay Contest entry. He is curious about innovations based on nature and particularly interested in the oceans, having served as a regular volunteer for beach cleanups, including after the 2010 Gulf BP oil spill. Logan participated in October in a roundtable discussion about future STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) ideas with The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, senior Administration officials, pioneers of scientific discovery and other Kid Science Advisors. “I am proud of Logan and the honor the White House has extended to him,” says Kurt Browning, Pasco County Superintendent of Schools. “I predict that he will have continued success and an impact in the STEM field.” The Kid Science Advisor Program was established on the recommendation of a 9-year-old during the 6th Annual White House Science Fair. At the fair, 9-year-old presenter Jacob Leggette asked President Obama if he had a Kid Science Advisor. The President loved the idea so much, he suggested to his science advisor Dr. John Holdren to seek ideas from young people about what they felt was most important in science, technology and innovation. At this year’s first ever Kid Science Advisors meeting, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy team greeted more than 2,500 Kid Science Advisors from across the country. During their visit, these young people met up with Holdren as well as NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, National Science Foundation Director France Cordova and former astronauts Scott and Mark Kelly.

Hospital receives Grant for Children's Blood Clot Study Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, recently announced that it has received a $2.8 million research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to expand its international clinical trial on blood clots in young patients. Researchers launched its Kids DOTT trial in 2007 with hopes of determining the length of time infants, children and teens should be treated with anti-clotting medication after a first-time acute venous thromboembolism (VTE), or blood clot in a vein. Pediatric blood clots affect one in 200 hospitalized children, and one out of every 10,000 children overall. Shorter treatment can reduce costs and spare a patient additional weeks of invasive treatment, often involving twice daily injections of anti-clotting medication or additional blood draws to monitor effectiveness. “This NIH grant will expand ongoing research to improve the safety and reduce the costs of anti-clotting therapy that is needed after children leave the hospital,” says Jonathan Ellen, M.D., president, CEO and physician-in-chief of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and vice dean and professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “Receiving this grant from the NIH underscores our commitment to clinical care and research focused on providing safe, high-value care and improving outcomes to benefit children everywhere.” The Kids-DOTT study is one of the largest randomized trials ever performed in the field of pediatric blood clots, with a collaboration of more than 40 children’s hospitals from around the world. More than 800 patients are expected to participate in the trial, with approximately 280 children enrolled to date. The award marks one of two NIH grants that Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital recently received for multi-center studies. palm Harbor Gets New 24/7 Er Medical Center of Trinity has opened its doors to its latest facility, ER 24-7 in Palm Harbor, a freestanding emergency department of Medical Center of Trinity. ER 24-7 in Palm Harbor is a 24- hour, seven- day- a- week emergency room for adults and kids. The public came out to celebrate the launch at an open house event held Saturday, Oct. 8. The event included tours of the new ER, the onsite Teddy Bear Clinic and ambulance. ER 24-7 in Palm Harbor will offer the community easy, convenient access to emergency care 24 hours a day and provide more advanced emergency services than an urgent care center. This full service, free standing ER will also accept patients via ambulance and have on site CT scan, ultrasound, x-ray and laboratory services. pinellas Student program recognized by Local Tech Forum On Oct.14, the Tampa Bay Technology Forum named the Pinellas Education Foundation’s Next Generation Tech program as the Student Program of the Year at its 13th Annual TBTF Industry Achievement Awards. The award recognizes a company or organization that developed an innovative and effective student training, apprenticeship or internship program. The Next Generation Tech program, developed by Robyn Mussler, CEO of Resolution Management Inc., in collaboration with the Pinellas Education Foundation, provides high school students with a ‘real world’ environment for developing software while working with business community mentors from companies such as Nielsen, Tech Data, Raymond James, GTE Financial, Power Chord, Exhedra, Triad Media, All Team and Achieva. The uniqueness of this program is its emphasis on the software development framework and the different types of skills needed to develop and deliver technology solutions. “It’s an honor to have this program recognized for its positive impact on our students and business community,” Mussler says. “Students are taught by their mentors the necessary skills to pursue the many different paths within business and technology.” Last year, 30 teams (100 students) and 15 mentors from four different businesses took part in the program. This year, the program has more than doubled and consists of 58 teams with 220 students in Pinellas county from 13 different high schools. The business team now consists of 55 mentors from ten different local businesses. Even night owls can benefit from waking just a few minutes earlier each day. Use this time solely for yourself. · STOP MULTITASKING. Really. Doing one thing at a time allows you to do that thing faster and better, which actually frees up time you could spend on something pleasurable. · FIND A NEW ACTIVITY. Take a class, learn a new sport or join a group that requires you to make a time commitment.

A LOOK AT THE EFFECTS DIGITAL MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY HAS By: Dr. Wendy Rice ON OUR KIDS AND HOW TO ADDRESS THEM

t’s that time of year again! For the holidays, my wife and I purchased a new laptop for our daughter and a tablet for our 14-year old son. We’re hoping that Chelsea’s laptop will help her with her advanced classes and Josh’s tablet will be really useful as he’s about to hit high school next fall. In the back of my mind though, I can’t help but think that maybe these new gifts will distract them with Snapchat or Facetiming instead of doing schoolwork. Am I overreacting or are these legitimate concerns?

AGES 6 AND up

If there’s one thing that many of us deal with in this day and age, it’s getting lost in new forms of technology. How could we not? Smartphones can do so much and many of us just can’t help but sit down and, before we know it, an hour (or hours!) has slipped by. There isn’t anything wrong with giving your kids a few age appropriate tech gifts this year, provided as a parent you make sure your child doesn’t overdo it.

Here’s a tip: Allow your children the freedom of some screen time based on whatever time they have left over after schoolwork, physical activities or other family-oriented activities – usually short time periods toward the end of the day. Remember teenagers act very differently online than they do in your presence, so be sure and stay in the know about what they do on the Internet.

Infants (under 18 months)

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), children 18 months and under should not be exposed to any technology, or “screen time,” at all. At this age, children are very susceptible to what they see and hear, and overexposing them can have aftereffects that’ll make any parent worry. Too much exposure to screens can also result in missing out on important bonding and attachment that happen in infancy. Making eye contact with babies and talking with them is critical to their development. If Mom or Dad is distracted by technology during feeding, changing and playtime, the effects on development can be profoundly affected. We support the recommendation to avoid exposing them to screen

We’ve come to the age where many kids either own smartphones or have easy access to the Internet or other timeconsuming digital media. From ages 6 and on, parents can be a bit more lenient on how much digital media their children indulge in. We understand that teenagers love keeping up with friends through Snapchat, learning what their favorite celebrities are saying on Twitter and what’s trending on Instagram, but as a parent, it’s important to know when to step in to prevent overexposure.

ToDDLErS (2-5 YEArS oLD)

At this age, the AAP says it’s okay to expose your child to some screen time, but not too much. If anything, keep this exposure to less than an hour a day. It’s very important for parents to be extra cautious of what their young children watch or do when it comes to digital media. Avoid gifting anything technology-related to kids in this age group during the holidays unless it’s something very educational and can easily be monitored by you. Keep in mind that young children and televisions are not always a great combination. Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you’ve decided to let your young ones indulge in some screen time: • Allow them to only watch educational programming. PBS, for example, has several series appropriate for young children, such as “Sesame Street.” • Avoid programs with too many commercials since these can be overwhelming to young children, and they don’t understand that marketers are trying to sell them things. • If dealing with smartphones, tablets or laptops, allow your young children to communicate to family members through chatting software like FaceTime or Skype. Doing this helps them form stronger bonds with long-distance relatives they rarely see in person.

Kids need to be able to selfmonitor their screen time to some extent. This means staying calm when it is time to turn off Minecraft or stop Snapchatting. Some kids struggle to be present in the real world when they are not connected online and others become irritable or downright angry when they can’t be playing their online games. Teach your kids that being able to stop doing something they enjoy and shifting to another activity is an important part of life. Their being able to do so without a huge reaction will make you, their parent, more likely to be okay with allowing them more time in the future.
