Remember when your newborn was placed into your arms by your nurse or OB-GYN? The weight of your sweet baby, the smell of their hair, their tiny toes and fingers? In the blur of pregnancy and delivery, this is one of the few moments that remain ingrained in our mind, that we carry with us and recall often and tell every year on our babies’ birthdays. As perinatal and NICU nurses, we get to witness the miracle of the human body during pregnancy and experience the incomparable joy of bringing new life into this world every day. We see the power of women as their bodies work so hard, and we see the strength of support as dads, partners and family cheer mom on (and make sure dad has circulation to the hand that mom’s holding onto so tight). Sometimes the birth of a child brings new challenges for parents, such as if their baby needs extra special care and is transferred to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). With the opening of our 10 private NICU suites in spring 2020, Oak Hill Hospital will keep NICU babies close to their home, family and doctors. During a time that can seem scary and unsure, our team is ready to be the rock of support and light of hope that parents and babies need to carry on. We cherish every milestone, anxiously awaiting the day of baby’s “NICU graduation” and saying farewell to our NICU warriors and NICU parents as they journey on to life outside the NICU. To all moms and parents who trust us with their care and babies: Thank you. To our NICU warrior parents: You are stronger than you think and braver than you know. You’ve got this! When I was pregnant with my son, the biggest surprise was the lack of education around nutrition and lifestyle. How do we nourish ourselves so both of us can thrive? How do we make whole foods work for our family? How do we make more conscious choices in our environment? The education component of empowering women to support their and their children’s health was missing outside of a pediatrician’s office. I created Uprooted Wellness to fill that space and bring more intention to building a better foundation of living, one where we could learn and grow together by incorporating practices that make us feel whole.

I started this journey about nine years ago, and most of the transformation fell into three areas: mindful eating, conscious living and natural healing. Everyone’s story is unique. I find the most powerful transformation lies in listening and connecting to our body again and the discovery that you can heal yourself. I meet my clients exactly where they are and work on more intentional living in those areas. In my life, this has healed fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, high cholesterol, colic and postpartum recovery. It’s been instrumental in supporting the immune system and gut health. My clients have addressed autoimmune conditions that hit women and children so hard today, such as diabetes, chronic pediatric illnesses and celiac disease.

THE GAME OF HOCKEY REQUIRES A LOT OF TEAMWORK. HOW DO YOU THINK THIS TRANSLATES INTO YOUR LIFE AS A DAD AND HUSBAND?

GIRARDI: Hockey has taught me so much over my career. Being a great teammate and a leader was always my number one goal. You have to work as a team if you want success. I have the same mindset at home with my family. Now that I am around all the time, we all have to work together to help each other out. I have to be a leader and a great role model for my kids.

AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE YOU WANTED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY PLAYER WHEN YOU GREW UP? ONCE YOU MADE THE DECISION, WHAT DO YOU THINK HELPED MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL?

GIRARDI: Ever since I was 5 years old playing outside on the frozen pond with my dad and my friends. I know it’s crazy to think at 5 that I wanted to play in the NHL, but that was all my friends and I thought about. I think growing up in a hard-working, close knit community like Welland, Ontario, made me who I am today. My parents Mark and Carol were also behind me 100% no matter if I had a bad or good game.

WHAT LESSONS DID YOU LEARN ON THE ICE THAT YOU TRY TO INSTILL IN YOUR OWN CHILDREN?

GIRARDI: I learned to always show respect, whether it be to the coaches, referees, opposing team, teammates or any of the employees that work in the arenas. Also, I learned to be disciplined and to have selfcontrol whether it be controlling my emotions on the ice during a game or something going on away from the rink. The final thing is that hard work pays off no matter what you do in life. You can work hard but still have fun at the same time. I loved having fun at the rink.

GIRARDI: Retirement has been amazing. You don’t realize how much stuff you miss out on when you play. I have been able to go to all my kids’ events and performances at school. I am also a full-time assistant coach with my son’s team. It is amazing to be out on the ice with him and his teammates. I love teaching the kids and helping them become good players and great teammates.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO KIDS OUT THERE WHO ARE DREAMING BIG LIKE YOU DID?

GIRARDI: Don't give up. I never got drafted, started out in the ECHL (formerly the East Coast Hockey League) and never was the most skilled or the fastest skater. You have to just keep going. What you do as a 9-year-old today is not going to make or break your career. You can still work on your skills on and off the ice, but you have to make it fun. Don’t wear yourself out by playing hockey seven days a week for the whole year. You need to take breaks and play some different sports. You want to keep it exciting every time you come to the rink.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO AS A FAMILY IN TAMPA BAY?

GIRARDI: We love driving our golf cart around Davis Island, grabbing a cappuccino at the DI coffee bar or some ice cream at Farrell’s. Our kids love going to CineBistro to see movies. So far, “Frozen 2” has been the best. Also, being able to take the kids to Amalie Arena to watch Lightning games—as a fan—is a lot of fun. Of course, ZooTampa and Busch Gardens are favorites too.

TAMPA BAY IS MOST DEFINITELY A HOCKEY COMMUNITY, WHICH MAY SEEM A LITTLE STRANGE TO NON-NATIVES! WHY DO YOU THINK HOCKEY IS SO SPECIAL TO THIS COMMUNITY?

GIRARDI: I agree! When I tell people how great the minor hockey programs are here and how hockey is such a big part of the city, people back home think I’m crazy. Obviously the 2004 Stanley Cup helps, but I think Jeff Vinik has done a great job getting the Lightning out in the community. From the Community Heroes to the standing salute at the games, it’s just amazing the work he does. Friends and family who’d been watching from afar raced out cheering and celebrating. “That was the day the person I love the most in this world said yes to spending life with me.”

Katie & Chris Married 10 years Aug. 22, 2009 THE FIRST DANCE: They started with a slow dance to “She’s Everything” by Brad Paisley. To the wedding guests’ surprise, the music cut out and they launched into a choreographed dance to “Boom Boom Pow” by The Black Eyed Peas.

Eight-year-old Chance Hart is up to bat. Dad is coaching him from the field. Little brother Knox cheers him on from the stands. Mom would be too, but she’s busy chasing baby sister Emry who’s run oﬀ to explore again. Such is the life of Chris and Katie Hart, as they juggle three small children. “A bit of patience and a whole lot of coﬀee” is how Katie handles it, adding that she is grateful for every minute. Life is definitely busier since the Harts tied the knot ten years ago, but also better. Though date nights

are rare now, Chris insists that eating take-out while watching a movie at home “is just as much fun, as long as she is next to me.” Their daily routine isn’t the only thing that’s changed in their relationship. Katie remembers thinking as a newlywed that love was a feeling. Now she sees it diﬀerently. “Love is something you show. It’s putting gas in my car or getting me coﬀee in the morning. It’s those actions and that attitude of putting your partner first.” Selflessness and communication are crucial to a good marriage, Katie says. Sticking it out during stressful times is too, adds Chris. “Marriage is not easy,” he says, “but anything worth it rarely is.”

This is the first month of marriage for Bryan and Kathryn Krejci. As you read this, they may be saying “I do” or opening wedding presents at their home in South Tampa. They are enjoying the magical first days of a new life together. “I pray it will be the best journey, filled with happiness,” Bryan says, “where Kathryn and I can grow up with each other.” The young husband and wife gush like newlyweds. He says she looks beautiful every day. She says his dimples are “the cutest thing ever.” But it’s clear their connection goes far beyond skin-deep as they speak about shared values, life goals, devotion to religion and, as Kathryn says, “deep-rooted trust and loyalty in one another.” The couple looks forward to building on this strong foundation— leaning on each other no matter what life brings. For marriage advice, Bryan turns to a business card his father-in-law gave him when Bryan asked for permission to propose to Kathryn. Written on the back are the keys to a successful marriage: "loyalty, respect, appreciation of each other’s diﬀerences and the fact that you complete each other." Bryan had the card laminated and carries it with him every day. Looking ahead, Kathryn envisions a full life. “I can’t wait to experience new things, go new places and bring new life into this world with him.”

The budget was tight, so they served pimento cheese sandwiches cut in triangles and an “ugly cake” at the small reception in their church hall. “We were so happy. We didn’t need much.”

The family room of the South Tampa home where David and Carol Stefany have lived for 23 years is a virtual shrine to their two sons’ childhood accomplishments in sports. Trophies, medals and encased baseballs fill shelves that run along the back wall. The boys are grown now, married with children of their own, and it’s just David and Carol in the house with so many memories. “All the memories come flooding back,” David says, reflecting on their lives now as grandparents to two toddlers who are their pride and joy. “Everything about our grandchildren is a reflection of what a great mom she was to her two sons and a byproduct of that loving and nurturing environment.” David gives Carol the credit, but raising their children was a team effort, with each parent modeling the behavior and values they hoped their sons would adopt. They emphasized hard work, responsibility, caring for others and giving back to their community. And their effort paid off. “They are outstanding human beings,” Carol says. “We couldn’t be more proud of our sons and the

choices they have made.” With their child-rearing days behind them, David and Carol focus on each other. They sing together in the church choir, go to Broadway shows at the Straz Center and watch Bucs’ games. A marriage built on “true love and common values” has only strengthened over time. “We’ve known each other so long that he just knows me,” Carol says. “I can be 100% myself, and that’s a wonderful thing.”

THE FIRST MEETING: They were high school students attending a football game in Rome, New York. She was cold, so she put her hand in the jacket pocket of the handsome boy standing next to her. He was shocked and instantly smitten. “That’s how I got his attention, and I’ve had it ever since.”

Cathy & Bill Married 51 years June 8, 1968 22

Bill and Cathy DeMare have four children and nine grandchildren ranging in age from one to 21. They all live in diﬀerent cities, but they stay close— visiting several times a year, Skyping weekly and chatting on a family group text. “I think it’s because of those family dinners,” Bill says, remembering a tradition they kept every night, without fail. “Our kids got used to talking. They always felt comfortable and would always talk about their issues, and just as importantly, listen to what we had to say.” Their kids were always a priority. Cathy gave up her career as a dental hygienist to be a stay-at-home mom. “He would travel a lot for work,” she says, “and there had to be a constant.” “We gave up the money she would have made,” Bill adds, “but it saved us a lot in the long run because our kids didn’t have any of the issues they might have had without their mother around.” In five decades of marriage, Bill and Cathy have lived in two countries and seven cities. Early on, they spent a year apart while Bill served in the Vietnam War. They came out of it all with a tight-knit family and a close union, thanks to what Bill calls the three components of a successful marriage: “First, love, which starts the relationship. Then, respect. If you don’t have respect, it will go nowhere. Lastly, it takes a commitment to make it work. Life is not always smooth sailing, but if you have made a commitment to make it work, then you don’t bail out. You never quit.”

one mom's Valentine's Day story

Who remembers passing notes to the boy you had a crush on when you were a kid? I believe it went something like this: “Do you like me? Check ‘yes’ or ‘no.’” The note had two little check boxes and was folded into a piece of origami art. Your heart was in your stomach as you nervously handed the note to your BFF who delivered it directly to your crush. Sometimes you got the note back right away, and sometimes it took days. Either way it was agony to wait. How could we place our fragile egos into one tiny little question? When I was growing up, we purchased our Valentine’s Day cards and wrote a name on each one. We went through the entire day excitedly receiving gestures of like and love from our peers. The popular kids were easy to spot on the bus ramp – loaded down with balloons and too many cards to carry from their admirers. When my daughter was in preschool, a few store-bought Paw Patrol cards with a bag of fruit snacks and voila, you were done. Now that she’s in elementary school, we must step up our game. Valentine’s Day is more sophisticated with customdesigned cards courtesy of Etsy and Pinterest accompanied with gift bags for each friend, not to mention the DIY shoe boxes the kids create to collect them all. I am an Amazon Prime mom. I lack the talent and patience for crafting and buy everything we need assembled and ready to go. When my oldest daughter Ella was in kindergarten, her crush was also born on Valentine’s Day. She begged me to buy him a present but that was a hard no for me. She doesn’t need to be prancing into class with gifts and a declaration for the one she loves at age 5. Later that day Ella came home upset because she was the only girl who did not have a gift for him. Are you serious? This is kindergarten, people. Lord have mercy; I am in for a long ride. Truthfully, I just hadn’t wanted her to get hurt or rejected. Her request took me back to the fifth grade when my friend Heather and I bought the boys we liked tie-dyed t-shirts with a football and their names airbrushed on the front. Why on earth did we think this was a good idea? We nervously showed up to school with Valentine’s Day gifts for dudes who were not even our boyfriends. They were embarrassed of course, and we were brushed off. A few days later my guy brought me a teddy bear with a little heart. It was clearly a consolation prize purchased by his mother who most likely didn’t want me to end up as a story on ABC’s After School Specials. I held onto that bear all year hoping he liked me, but he didn’t. That bear was false hope. Now my baby is in the second grade and she is much older and wiser. She admits that she is just in it for the candy score. This momma is smarter too. We hit up the dollar store, buy in bulk and recruit her little sister for the assembly line. Right now, it’s all about the chocolate and candy pop rings. We’ll save love and lavish gestures for her teen years. FEBRUARY 2020 TampaBayParenting.com

David Cox, father to 5- and 8-yearolds, is also GMF’s executive director. A fervent music lover, Cox had the idea for GMF after years of attending music festivals and serving on the Gasparilla Film Festival’s Board of Directors. “The New Orleans Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival both had facets I wanted to bring to a music festival in Tampa,” Cox says. Beyond showcasing local musicians, Cox wanted to emulate those festivals’ nonprofit community events and focus on local food. “I don’t have a musical background, but I have a deep love for Tampa Bay. Completing my high school service hours with the Gasparilla Arts Festival helped instill in me, early on, an appreciation for local arts and culture.” 2020’s GMF will feature no fewer than 26 local acts. The festival will also serve up what Cox calls “indigenous Tampa food.” Staples like Cuban sandwiches, grouper sandwiches and deviled crabs are crowd pleasers in the 813.

SWEET DEAL

GMF is 100% free for children 12 and under. “That really sweetens the deal for music-loving parents,” Cox says. Daytime performances include a spread of kindie rock which, with its singer-songwriter sensibility and kid-centric themes, appeals to ears of all ages. Cox notes that much of the children’s programming has consisted of Grammy-winning artists. This year, festivalgoers can enjoy Josh and the Jamtones—a Boston based ska band sure to have everyone in the family dancing the day away. Also taking the stage is Gainesville’s Bears and Lions, a wild mix of theatrics and rock, which basically sounds like breakfast time with kids.

EVERYONE’S SWEET SPOT

Many kids (and even a good number of adults) have short attention spans. They crave variety. Like the finest box of chocolates, GMF offers just that. March 7 and 8, Curtis Hixon Park is filled with face painting, a tie-dye shirt-making station, an interactive painting wall and plenty of green space for kids to run free. A partnership with Tampa General Hospital is instrumental in making the extensive children’s programming possible. For Cox and thousands of other GMF supporters, making time for musical experiences with family is a must: “My kids even come out to instrument drives we hold as part of our Recycled Tunes program—aimed at refurbishing and providing instruments to schools with limited financial means.” Cox and many other committed GMF supporters believe exposing their children to Tampa Bay arts and culture, as well as philanthropy, nurtures important qualities within the next generation to carry Tampa’s torch throughout the 21st century.

TAMPA HAS ITS OWN CELEBRATION THIS TIME OF YEAR, AND YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS JUST THE ADVENTURES FOR LITTLE ONES.

FOSTER CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

During Black History Month, your local public library will feature a variety of ways to learn about and honor African Americans and their many historic and continued contributions to society. Many library locations offer exciting programs involving various African drums, dancing and storytelling. The Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Public Library on Nebraska Avenue will host a special Puzzle Mania event featuring African American inventors. Reading together is always a great way to learn something new. You can check out many children’s books that teach about race, cultural differences and celebrating Black History. One of my favorite books in our library is “My People” by Langston Hughes. This timeless book of photographs has simple, poetic prose that honors the strength and beauty of Black people in America. My daughter loved the expressive photographs and enjoyed trying to name the different emotions each person may have been feeling. This is a great book to start (or continue) a conversation with your little one of any age about diversity. You can find this book at your library by scanning the green QR code.

I know it’s only February. But now is the time to act if you have a child heading into kindergarten this fall. From Feb. 18-21, all across Hillsborough County, elementary schools are holding Ready for Kindergarten events. These events offer students and families a firsthand look at kindergarten life. Although each school’s Ready for Kindergarten program is unique, they often include a one-on-one conversation with a staff member to answer your questions, a tour of the school, time to meet the principal and administration, a pop into a kindergarten classroom and a packet with all the necessary information about the school. You’ll find the date and details for each school’s Ready for Kindergarten event at SignUpForKindergarten.com. When you visit, make sure you ask about what’s on your mind.
