curb appeal Host of “Curb Appeal” Shares Tricks of the Trade with Wesley Chapel HOA Board

T

BY JACKIE BURTON

he Bridgewater Community Association of Wesley Chapel, Fla. received a surprise visit from HGTV Star John Gidding, who currently hosts “Curb Appeal: The Block.” Gidding was inspired by the association’s commitment to increase property value and lead the way out of the housing slump, so he gave some great suggestions for increasing curb appeal on a budget.

“I heard the board was met with resistance from non-compliant investors and owners when it began taking the necessary steps to rehabilitate the neighborhood,” said Gidding. “I wanted to give them tips for creating low-maintenance curb appeal on a budget that they could share with the community.” Gidding also suggested a few things that the association could do in common areas such as using boulders to create unique landscapes and planting large palms at the entrances of main streets. “We are so honored that John Gidding took the time to come all the way out to Bridgewater,” said HOA President Mark Spector. “His tips are much appreciated, and I look forward to sharing them with the entire neighborhood. Hopefully this helps us come together as a community to proactively restore our property values and remain true to our vision of a family-oriented, owner-occupied neighborhood.” Bridgewater, which was developed by Lennar Corporation in 2004, was one of the last developments in Florida finished prior to the

residential real estate market slowdown. The neighborhood was profiled by the Wall Street Journal in September 2007 for struggles with absentee-investors and non-compliant renters, but they’ve come a long way since then. In less than one year, Bridgewater’s financials have been brought from near bankruptcy to financial stability; collection rates rose from 25% to 55%; HOA dues were reduced from $170 to $70 per quarter; owner-occupancy rates increased from 40% to 55%; and the statistics are looking better every day. The Board has even begun investing in new and improved amenities throughout the community. The positive changes began when the board voted to operate independently in July 2009, putting an end to unauthorized negotiations between previous property managers, legal staff and delinquent owners. They also negotiated the cancellation of the bulk cable contract, converting the community to individual accounts. John owns his own design firm, John Giddens Design which specializes in the creation of sculptural interior architecture for all types of spaces. Using advanced digital modeling techniques, the firm designs and fabricates structural three-dimensional additions and interior installations that transform how people interact with and make use of their living spaces. The firms designed space is one of a kind, evocative and stylish. “We are fascinated with material honesty and luxury, always striving to find the best for our clients”, stage Giddens. welcoming look. They only cost about $15 each, and you never have to turn them on/off. Placing tables and chairs outside implies that the neighborhood is safe and that people enjoy spending time outside with neighbors. An inexpensive bistro set can be found at any local home goods store. Always plant according to your willingness to maintain. Choose structures, plants, ground-coverings and systems that will help to reduce watering, weeding, trimming, painting and mowing. Buy trees and shrubs bare-root, in containers or with roots and soil wrapped in burlap. Bare-root plants are the most economical. There’s no heavy soil to manage or containers to plant. Add mulch around palms, shrubs and other plant beds. Mulch helps minimize weeds, conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. Plus, it makes your landscape look more polished. Ornamental grasses add grace and motion to any garden. Many varieties last throughout the winter, attracting birds and adding winter garden interest. Add a seasonal wreath to your door. Landscape in front of power boxes to help hide them. Don’t let your mailbox look forlorn. Plant flowers around it.

Portraits in Leadership is a study of the inspiring life story of six figures whose courage and determination helped Judaism weather its darkest hours. they said she wouldn’t live

BY JANET BRITTON-SMITH

Pari, Grace and Trevor Miller

hey said her condition was so rare it didn’t have a name…only 20 children in the world had been born with this disorder since it was discovered in the early 1980s.

They wouldn’t operate on the holes in her heart because they said she wouldn’t live anyway. The doctors gave them no hope…none of the children born with this condition had lived past the age of one. But her parents refused to give up. Little Grace was an angel who had come into their lives for a reason. So her mother called several doctors about performing the heart surgery…they were not encouraging because she was so fragile. But her parents persisted and finally convinced a doctor to do the surgery. They repaired the two holes in her heart, but Grace had other issues. The chromosomal abnormality she was born with also caused vision impairment, physical impairment and abnormalities with her respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. So with the heart surgery done, her parents began looking for someone who could help with Grace’s developmental and speech delays. And they found Easter Seals.

24

Grace began receiving speech and occupational therapy from Easter Seals. Because of the therapy, she now communicates with sign language, attends public school, and is doing more than anyone thought possible. “The early interventionists and the speech pathologist from Easter Seals were the first professionals to give us hope and encouragement to continue our journey with our beautiful daughter,” notes Pari, Grace’s mother. Today she is in kindergarten…thanks to her parents’ love and determination. While she will always be in a wheelchair and still requires a tracheostomy for assistance breathing and a feeding tube, she has beaten the odds and every day, she gives her family another reason to be grateful. The children of Easter Seals continue to amaze and inspire us every day and it is a privilege to work with them and to help them build a future for themselves. Easter Seal’s is grateful for the changes they can make in their lives and the miracles they witness. They have committed to help children with disabilities and special needs succeed in school and life; they are counting on us. But we cannot do it alone. It takes the support of generous folks like Pari who supports Easter Seals and has joined our efforts by becoming the Co-Chair along with Lauren Bryant of M.E. Seals’ inaugural year for hosting this premier event for ladies with a passion for fashion. This ladies’ gourmet luncheon and shoe auction is an enchanted event, where Tampa Bay’s well-heeled ladies put their hearts and “soles” into enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities. Proceeds from this event will provide educational preschool services, therapy, early intervention programs, speech and behavioral programs, and autism services for nearly 400 children. And that number will rise to 500 or more as another 90 children join our child care center in January. Every day, the Easter Seals helps children do things that many of us take for granted like sitting up, drinking from a cup, or holding a spoon. The joy on a child’s face when they are able to accomplish these things for the first time is priceless. St. Joseph Hopital North

Opens

Residents of northwest Tampa and southeast Pasco now have one more reason to treasure this family-friendly community – they finally have a hospital of their own. Located in Lutz, St. Joseph’s Hospital-North offers emergency care, surgical services, imaging and diagnostic facilities, intensive care, obstetrics and more in a peaceful, healing and family-centered environment. As the area’s first new hospital in more than 30 years, it was specially designed to make patients and visitors as comfortable as possible during their hospital experience. You sense a difference from the moment you enter this building, which resembles a luxury hotel with its high ceilings, tastefully appointed lobby and remarkably helpful staff. Every patient room is a beautiful private suite that includes a full bathroom and accommodations for an overnight guest. Room service provides madeto-order meals (for those not restricted for medical reasons). “Our family-centered care philosophy allows relatives and visitors to be collaborators in patient care,” said Paula McGuiness, chief operating officer for St. Joseph’s Hospital-North. “By incorporating the family, everyone is working together to meet the needs of the patient.” For expectant mothers, the new hospital brings a birthing experience like no other hospital stay. Obstetrics services include four spacious labor and delivery rooms equipped with the latest in birthing amenities, including a labor bed with multiple positions specially designed for comfort during delivery, a shower specially designed for use during labor and an innovative infant warmer that quickly distributes warmth through a recessed heater while also serving as an in-bed scale. Relatives and friends can wait in comfort in the family lounge, which features plush seating, a kitchenette and a great view of the newborn nursery. Moms and babies can recover together in one of 12 private suites beautifully outfitted with dark chocolate cabinetry and wood floors, plush fabrics and mosaic glass. In addition to the large high definition TV, these suites include an individually controlled entertainment system, a large bathroom with a full-size shower, an upholstered rocking chair and an in-room family area to accommodate an overnight guest. Families also are excited about having high-quality emergency services closer to home. The full-service emergency department at St. Joseph’s HospitalNorth includes 30 private rooms for adult and pediatric patients. A special fast-track area provides expedited treatment for minor emergencies.

ABOVE: St. Joseph’s Hospital-North’s signature entryway of glass ceiling panels and steel beams. RIGHT: Mother and Baby Suite. Evidence-based design throughout St. Joseph’s Hospital-North helps caregivers provide the best patient experience available. One small example is the hallway lighting, where ceiling lights are aimed toward side walls rather than directly down in the face of patients on stretchers. On a larger scale, every room features an identical floor plan to help caregivers work more efficiently with each patient. In addition, smart workflow design ensures that medication, supplies and nourishment are organized in a manner that keeps caregivers close to patients and their families. Noise reduction features, like carpeted hallways, noise-absorbing tiles and glass sound barriers add to the healing atmosphere. Another subtle feature demonstrates that St. Joseph’s Hospital-North is beautiful from the inside out. LEED®registered by the U.S. Green Building Council, the facility

is designed and developed to meet key categories to achieve green building certification. The environmentally friendly building is made of materials that support energy conservation and clean air with low chemical emissions and recycled content. “It’s exciting to open a new hospital,” McGuiness said. “We get to bring this community the high level of care and service that St. Joseph’s Hospital is known for, and we have done everything we possibly can to make everyone’s experience here just as pleasant as possible.” Some features include: •

so is Orlando

BY DAVID ESTEVEZ

When was the last time you really got away with your spouse: for one weekend, free of all communication devices, and alone? If your answer is more than one year, it’s time to get out of the house. A romantic getaway is past due and now is a great time to fulfill it. People sometimes forget how close Orlando is and what it has to offer Florida residents. Late winter or early spring is the best time to plan a weekend getaway to Universal Studios Orlando. Driving on I-4 for a little over an hour you arrive at the beautiful driveway of the Hard Rock Hotel, and you immediately realize that you will be living like a rock ‘n’ roll superstar for the next two days. Once you’ve checked-in and unpacked into one of 650 guest rooms, which all feature stylish furnishings and incredible rock ‘n’ roll artwork, head straight to the Mandara Spa at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel to unwind with a Elemis Aroma Stone Therapy couple’s massage and start your weekend getaway right! Arriving at the Mandara Spa, once you’ve chosen one of the spa’s signature massage oils and have changed into your spa attire you are lead to a private massage suite. The room, which is dimly lit and smells like another world, is where you will spend the next 80 minutes surrounded two wonderful massage therapists. Harnessing the properties of basalt volcanic stones, which have been bathed in warm water and anointed sensual aromas of the Orient, your Elemis Aroma Stone Therapy helps soothe away stress and relieve muscle aches. This couple’s massage is the best way to begin a wonderful stay together at the Universal Orlando Resort.

Dinner plans for your first night at the Hard Rock Hotel are quite easy to arrange seeing as how Universal CityWalk is short walk from the hotel lobby. Extraordinary Woman

BY LINDSAY PEREZ

Chicago native Kathleen Steffey, had, as she puts it, “a fun and simple” childhood. Her strong extended family helped to foster her devotion to people and family and also provided her with a cultural education and exposed her to the arts. She began working when she was 16 years old and had a strong work ethic that was engrained in her by her hard-working parents. After high-school, Steffey left behind performing in plays and cheerleading in order to attend a small private school in Chicago, Illinois where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business. She later went on to attend another small, private institution and earn a Masters Degree in Business Leadership. After college, she started her career in professional recruiting and she’s never looked back. Before starting her own business, she moved to Holland as an Expat to assist a European Division of a software company for two years. This experience not only broadened her business perspective but also, transformed her view of the world. Kathleen Steffey now lives in South Tampa with her husband Kevin and their three daughters, Peyton, Morgan and Addison.

my blackberry of course, but I’m all theirs until they are sleeping.

Lindsay: What do you think your secret to success is? Kathleen: I believe Integrity, drive, flexibility and being nimble are the difference. I’ve never been an “idea girl” and not followed-through and made my ideas happen. There’s a part of me that just learns to go with the flow because I know that everything will be just fine. I know how to juggle things and don’t get overwhelmed.

Lindsay: Favorite restaurant to take your kids to? Kathleen: We frequent the Colonnade after church. All three of our kids are huge soup eaters and the Colonnade has the best Clam Chowder in Tampa. My kids die for it. We take them everywhere and anywhere really, as long as it’s kid appropriate. They behave really well and I think it’s because they are used to eating out and the manners we have reinforced.

Lindsay: What is your biggest fear? Kathleen: Dying young. I don’t want to leave my kids without seeing who they become. I yearn to watch them become honorable, caring, high-integrity adults in society. My children are my personal joy and I consider them to be my biggest projects in life. I can’t wait to see who they become and how they honor and rapture this world.

Lindsay: Who is your biggest inspiration or role model? Kathleen: My church inspires me. Hyde Park United Methodist Church and are active in our church community. Kevin and I facilitate a weekly group study on Sunday evenings and our children have attended Small Blessings Preschool at the church. Our two oldest girls are also in the Children’s Choir. We really feel that our church is the greatest role model for our family and we are inspired by our church-community very much.

Lindsay: What goals do you have for your future? Kathleen: My health and spiritual gifts are important goals in my life. I want to keep a pulse on the everyday grind so I can alter what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. I want to remain focused on eating clean foods and exercising my body as much as possible. I want for my family to stay focused on contributing to our church community. Lindsay: What is your proudest moment? Kathleen: Providing life to three children and having the privilege to influence who they will be, makes me proud. I realize that some may say owning and operating a business is a big achievement, but what I also realize, is that it’s only a fraction of what really matters in life. Lindsay: What do you love and hate about being a Mom? Kathleen: Being a mom brings out the best and worst in me. My kids bring me joy—they’re fun, carefree, and jovial. I love that my kids take me away from the everyday grind. Motherhood challenges me at times when I start feeling the guilt and the constant juggle to do the right thing at the right time. Lindsay: How do you balance motherhood and work? Kathleen: I stay focused on what’s important at the right time in both business and at home. I exercise a lot, eat well and take time for myself, which helps free my mind. When I’m at work, I work and when I’m home with my kids, I check

Lindsay: Favorite thing about living and working in Tampa Bay? Kathleen: I love the small town in a big town feeling I get. I live in South Tampa and it’s small & localized. I love the outdoors and the amount of activities to do with the kids because of our climate. Lindsay: Something you would like to do before you die? Kathleen: Travel the world with my kids and even live overseas with my kids at some point. I want to shape their perspective. Lindsay: Favorite thing to do with your kids in Tampa Bay? Kathleen: We love the YMCA in South Tampa. It’s addicting and in our weekly lives. It has so many fun things for the kids to do and I get the bonus of working out while they’re doing them. We also love the beach very much.

Lindsay: What makes you happy? Kathleen: Happiness is seeing my children and husband’s happiness. Feeling good about myself helps me be the best I can for my family. Lindsay: What is something people don’t know about you? Kathleen: I like to laugh and crack jokes. I like being funny. I have a hidden love for Candid Camera type shows. Lindsay: What message would you like to give other women/community? Kathleen: Reach for your goals! You can do anything you put your mind to with the help of others! Positive people attract positive people! Lindsay: What would you like to see in Tampa Bay’s future? Kathleen: I would love to see more sidewalks in the neighborhoods! I want my kids to ride their bikes and walk safely. Lindsay: What else would you like to share with our readers? Kathleen: I want to make sure that everyone knows that my services are available for the Tampa Bay Community. I am also offering a discounted rate to anyone who mentions this article to help women in the community with their lives and careers. Camp Invention Prepares Children for the Future For over 20 years, the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program has been inspiring the minds of children nationwide. To many educators, the program developed by nonprofit Invent Now Kids provides a safe, creative outlet for children to experience extended summer learning by engaging in such fun activities as exploring molecular patterns and bringing robots to life. Since its inception, the Camp Invention program has grown to include nearly 1,500 sites in 49 states with more than 65,000 children participating last year nationwide. Hosted by local schools, this weeklong program is comprised of inquiry-based exercises that incorporate science, technology, math, engineering and even history and the arts to encourage the development of creative solutions to realworld challenges. “We’re getting to the root of innovation by providing motivation to learn, create and excel, particularly in the critical areas of math and science,” said Michael J. Oister, President of Invent Now Kids Each day, children rotate through five integrated modules and through a combination of imaginative play and hands-on activities, begin to hone their own 21st century life skills. Children can rebuild a virtual world and act as entrepreneurs establishing a new marketplace in the Hatched™ module; explore alternative energy to power robotic creatures in the Power’d™ module; and study ancient cultures and sports like lacrosse and soccer from civilizations around the world as in the Global Games™ module, just a few of the learning modules available. Lowry Park Zoo Welcomes Rare Bird on Christmas Day On Christmas Day 2009, Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo became the first wildlife institution in North America to hatch a rare African shoebill stork chick, and just the second institution worldwide. Though the chick began hatching with its customary pip early Christmas morning, he had not fully hatched and vocalized until the evening of December 26. Only 12 adult shoebills are housed in North American wildlife institutions including four at the Tampa zoo. The population of wild shoebills is projected to be as low as 8,000-10,000. “The successful reproduction of shoebill storks is a remarkable achievement for Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo,” notes ornithologist Kevin Bell, chairman of the board of directors for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). “The shoebill population is uncommon in the wild, and rarely seen in zoos. This is a great accomplishment that is helping the conservation of this unique species.” Deputy Director and acting CEO for Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo Craig Pugh considers it a perfect way to start the New Year. “Successful hatching of a shoebill here shows what a zoo can do, both as an enjoyable place to visit and as a conservation organization that helps to protect the variety of life on Earth,” he says. The parent birds had established a nest site earlier in the year, when the female laid an egg October 3. This egg was accidentally crushed by the new parents; however the female laid another egg on November 11 which successfully incubated. To date, the parent birds have been extremely attentive and sharing in the brooding responsibilities. Aviary zoo keepers continue to conduct “dawn to dusk” watches to document feeding by the parent birds and response by the chick. Known as one of the great bird species of Africa, shoebills are tall (3.5 to 4 feet), darkly colored birds (blue-grey) with unusually large bills up to 12 inches long and 5 inches wide that resemble the shape of a wooden shoe.

Tampa Museum of Art To Debut with New Light Installation The Tampa Museum of Art will premiere its new 66,000-square-foot building when the museum officially opens its doors to the public February 6. Designed by San Francisco architect Stanley Saitowitz, the building will feature a shimmering pierced aluminum exterior and state of the art gallery spaces with translucent ceilings and polished concrete floors. In all, the museum will offer seven interior galleries, one exterior sculpture gallery and several educational classrooms. Also scheduled to debut during the museum’s opening is a commissioned light installation by digital artist Leo Villareal for the museum’s exterior, to feature programmable light emitting diodes (LEDs) 45 feet high and 300 feet long, and embedded within two layers of perforated aluminum panels. In daylight, the façade will appear as a moiré-like pattern, and in darkness, the installation titled “Sky (Tampa)” will illuminate downtown Tampa. Following its debut, the installation will remain on view every evening as part of the museum’s permanent collection. “We wanted a bold pronouncement that one of the new directions for our collection and exhibition offerings will be in the arena of new media,” says Todd D. Smith, the museum’s executive director. “We could not think of a more appropriate artist to launch our commitment to this genre than Leo Villareal.” For more information about the Tampa Museum of Art, go to www.tampamuseum.org. Environmental Club Students Clean Up Sweetwater Creek Students in Berkeley Prep’s Environmental Club spent much of their day January 14 working together to clean up nearby Sweetwater Creek, a stretch of creek running along the campus’s northeast side that flows directly into the Bay. Club members, several upper division students and teachers Dr. Kline and Mrs. Ludwig collected 12 large bags of trash, tires, boards and old fencing that had been polluting the creek. The clean-up is just of many community service projects students at Berkeley Prep participate in each year. Overall, students at the school collectively perform more than 25,000 hours of community service annually.

Model Placement Center Is Finding Young Talent in Florida When the Davis Family adopted Justin, they had no idea their new family member was a boy of many talents. They were simply thrilled to welcome the boy into their home and into the United States. While they had no big plans for Russian-born Justin, they hoped to provide a good home, supportive values and encouragement to pursue his dreams. So when Justin began asking about getting involved in extracurricular activities, his parents showed their support. He expressed an interest in gymnastics and was soon enrolled in classes. Next, it was dance and he was taking part in recitals. But when Justin expressed an interested in becoming a model for television and magazines, the Davis family wasn’t certain where to go. They finally decided to submit images of Justin to the Model Placement Center and soon its Florida office invited Justin and his family among hundreds of other young prospective models and their families to meet with MPC’s Talent Director Rob Simkin and Manager Dianne Paulson. “From the moment Justin illuminated the room,” says His parents just sat back themselves.”

Moving Day at All Children’s Hospital On January 9, All Children’s Hospital safely relocated 169 hospitalized infants and children – along with the high-tech equipment required to provide them ICU level care –from its original 42-year-old building to its brand new facility. And the team did so in just six hours. “An undertaking on the scale of this move relies on the planning, skill and commitment of literally hundreds of individuals,” notes Gary Carnes, President and CEO of All Children’s Health System. “For the past year, All Children’s physicians, nurses and staff have carefully considered every detail in the safe transfer of our young patients from our existing facility to our new home. The tabletop plans, mock move and training scenarios all paid off with a successful move.” The moving process began at 6 a.m. with first patient to be transferred, 7-week-old Annmaria Augustine from Hudson, who had been staying on the third floor Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Like all of the hospital’s patients, she was wheeled through an underground tunnel connecting All Children’s to neighboring Bayfront Medical Center and across elevated walkways to the new All Children’s Hospital located at 501 Sixth Avenue South. The hospital’s final patient to be transported around noon was 13-year-old Tristan Aveyard, a cystic fibrosis patient from Clearwater, who received a similar round of applause as she was wheeled into the new hospital. All together, around 800 All Children’s staff members carried out the move, including employees who volunteered their Saturday to take part. Ten physicians manned the route to address any concerns or emergencies and more than fifty volunteers from local fire and police departments provided additional muscle for moving heavy equipment or beds wherever necessary. The ten-story replacement hospital is the central focus of All Children’s $403-million construction project, which includes a seven-story Outpatient Care Center, 700-space Visitor Parking Garage and a Central Energy Plant designed to keep the hospital fully functional (with air conditioning) for up to three weeks in the event of a disaster or power interruption. The new hospital and its neighboring Outpatient Care Center, which opened January 18, provide nearly a million square feet of space devoted to pediatric health care. Virtually all of the hospital’s 259 licensed beds are in individual rooms, a change designed to meet family needs while enabling more efficient delivery of care to hospitalized kids who are often too sick to share space with another patient. The Walmart & Sam’s Club Emergency Center on its first floor more than triples the size of its existing pediatric emergency center. The Vinny Lecavalier Pediatric Cancer & Blood Disorders Center allows patients whose immune systems are compromised to avoid isolation with a dedicated playroom for these patients, made possible through a $3 million pledge from the Tampa Bay Lightning star and team captain. The hospital also has a new rooftop helistop for med-evac helicopters designed to accommodate the weight and rotor span of most military helicraft, in the event of a natural disaster such as a hurricane.

Attack of the dinosaur nuggets! Searching for a real kids meal

BY JOSETTE EDOUARD

As parents we quickly find ourselves stressing over a decent family meal, as dining with the family soon becomes a dreaded chore instead of a favorite pass time. Unfortunately, restaurants have taken kid’s dining to an insulting level that is incomprehensible to most parents. After going through hundreds of restaurants it was astounding to me to see the amount of restaurants whose kid’s menus consisted of PB&J sandwiches, chicken fingers, pizza, hot dogs, and mac n’ cheese. And when asked the daring question of “What healthy choices do you offer children?” Almost all the restaurants proudly answered, “Oh yes! Instead of fries, children have the option of getting carrot sticks or a fruit cup…” The bold ones would add, “We even serve milk and chocolate milk!”

large part of this problem is due to the fact that instead of eating baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and veggies with the rest of the family; many moms are catering to this ridiculous “children’s food” fad and heating up frozen nuggets and crinkled French fries in the microwave instead. Children should learn to eat all kinds of foods.

It has become the norm for children to see eating a meal as a source of entertainment, rather than a necessary part of life. For unknown reasons, chicken can only taste good if it’s shaped like a dinosaur staring up at you and pasta is only appetizing when Spongebob and his friends are swimming in a bowl of marinara sauce.

While I’m sure I didn’t find everything the Bay Area had to offer. It was impressive to find that these establishments actually existed.

So many children are learning these horrible habits that they will eventually carry into their adult life. Can you imagine, a 25-year-old ordering starshaped chicken nuggets with carrot sticks shaped like wands? It looks pretty ridiculous; but what’s more ridiculous is that we think it’s cute for a 3-year-old to do it. With such limitations in food options not only at restaurants but at home also, children don’t acquire a taste for flavorful, well-prepared, healthy foods. As parents it is our responsibility to teach children how to eat not only healthy but to eat well balanced meals. The amount of obese children in this country is mind-boggling and a

As I discovered how prevalent this issue has become, I was on a quest to find the few restaurants around town that wasn’t afraid of standing up against the status quo. These restaurants actually feature real kid’s menus. The meals all look fairly similar to adult meals but are portioned to fit the limited belly of a child.

Grill Smith, is a refreshing modern, city-chic, restaurant that stands out in comparison to the traditional palm tree and thong sandal infested restaurants we see here in Florida. Easily, going from an excellent environment for the family to a romantic evening alone for mom and dad; Grill Smith fits it all. The dim lighting and contemporary décor makes for a truly comfortable experience. They carry their unique contemporary style into their chef –inspired meals. The menu is loaded with not only traditional American meals but each entrée has its own exceptional ethnic twist. The most remarkable however, is of course, their kid’s menu. It beats out the usual PB&J, mac n’ cheese, and carrots that most restaurants call “children-friendly” picks. Their menu has great kid’s choices like, steak, mashed potatoes, and veggies, chicken marsala, and even chicken penne pasta served with garlic bread! When dining here you can be sure that your child is eating a hearty, filling, and nutritious meal, just like you would make at home. Grill Smith has several locations in the Bay Area.

You cannot enter this establishment without hearing the popular greeting, “Welcome to Moe’s!” Known for their enormous burritos, Moe’s Southwest Grill is a family favorite. Dining in this fun and engaging atmosphere, it’s hard to refrain yourself from a second helping. Their wide selection of fresh, made-to-order ingredients keeps people coming in routinely. Moe’s has received plenty of media coverage and awards due to their healthy and fresh options and just about everything on their menu is available for children in smaller portions. Quesadillas, tacos, and burritos; children have their choice of health-conscious, homemade whole wheat tortillas, light sour cream, and guacamole. The veggies are unlimited and you can dress your meal anyway you choose. The Dale Mabry and Columbus location offers a promotional night on Wednesdays, where children eat free with the purchase of an adult entrée. Mimi’s Café, located in Carrollwood off of North Dale Mabry, is the place to dine when you’re looking for a really unique dining experience. Its French Cottage exterior décor makes a statement even as you drive past it on the street but what is truly alluring is its French Café interior décor that is molded with a hint of New Orleans extravagance and color. Aside from its stunning looks, its mouthwatering cuisine wins you over with just the descriptions in the menu. Beginning each incredible meal with their tasty assortment of breads you almost hate to have to end the meal. They offer excellent choices for children such as spaghetti and grilled chicken breast. While it may not be very health-conscious, this entrée was recognized by Food Network as the place for getting the best grilled cheese sandwich. Oozing with cheesy goodness, the five-cheese inspired sandwich is a big hit among adults and children. Hao Wah Chinese Restaurant is filled with culture. Accurately, depicting its name, which translates as “gorgeous” in English, the restaurant is lavish, spacious, and comforting. With a wide assortment of authentic Chinese cuisine the restaurant not only embraces great meals for children but it promotes it. Featuring popular foods like General Tso’s Chicken, fried rice, egg rolls, shrimp and Chinese vegetables; this restaurant is nothing compared to the usual Chinese food establishment located in your neighborhood. Your children will not only develop a more sophisticated palate but they will have an appreciation for international cuisines and become more open-minded. So, hang up that ratty apron and stop slaving over the stove. Your children will enjoy the meals at these locations so much that they’ll have a hard time getting through that last bag of frozen nuggets wedged in your freezer door.
