The Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic returns to Bayshore Boulevard for a live, in-person race for 2022! Runners can lace up and hit the pavement Feb. 26 and 27. INTRODUCING APOLLO - CMA’S NEWEST RESCUED DOLPHIN! Clearwater Marine Aquarium is now the forever home to a new rescued male bottlenose dolphin named Apollo! MEET THE GUEST EDITOR Alfred Asante-Korang, M.D., F.A.C.C. Pediatric Cardiologist with the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Heart Institute I grew up in Ghana and also spent nearly a decade of my young life in England. My dad, a pharmacist, convinced me to study medicine. I was good at math and thought I would be an engineer or computer scientist, but my family kept telling me I would be a great doctor. I didn’t understand the importance of the role of a “doctor” until I finally entered medical school. During my cardiology fellowship at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburg, I knew there and then that my passion was transplant cardiology. Fast forward to 2022: I have a family of my own – my wife, Fernan, and two daughters, Rachel and Hailey, and I’ve been practicing transplant cardiology at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for 24 years. Whether it’s my children or my patients, I offer the same advice – get out there and enjoy life to the fullest. Children with heart problems may experience more setbacks, surgeries and procedures than most other kids – but that shouldn’t hold them back. I’m proud to be part of a team that provides expert and comprehensive cardiac care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart conditions. As we celebrate Heart Month in February, I want our heart patients to know they are the reason I still wake up every morning eager to come to work. I feel lucky not only to be their doctor, but also their trusted friend. I hope you will join me in celebrating our heart warriors this month and the entire year.

The roar of the crowd hits my ears before I even find my seat. As the smell of hotdogs and popcorn fills the air, a wave of nostalgia passes over me. I look down at my daughters and smile – I’m excited to share America’s pastime with them. When I was growing up, the neighborhood dads would take us kids to baseball games. It was magical – connecting with my dad just as he had with his dad. As an adult now with children of my own, I realize the extraordinary power of the game—a tradition passed down from generation to generation; the perfect arena for family bonding. That’s why I am so excited that the Glazer Children’s Museum has partnered with the Tampa Bay Rays to bring Big League Fun, a traveling exhibit that immerses visitors in the exciting world of baseball. The 2,000 square-foot hands-on experience, partly funded by the Rays Baseball Foundation, features fun activities, simulated game experiences and trivia challenges that promote important educational concepts for children and engage fans of all ages. From Spring Training to the World Series, visitors will be able to explore the ins and outs of baseball season. Test your skills! Get tips for proper pitching, throwing, fielding, hitting and base-running. Head to the bullpen and pitch into the strike zone; perfect your swing and step up to the plate; lead off, run to second or back to the bag; throw from the infield or outfield with simulated plays; and grab a glove for catching practice. Explore the world of professional baseball. Snap your photo in front of a special backdrop, and customize your own team logo, player name and uniform using the graphic design station. In the clubhouse, check the schedule, roster, batting order and stats; explore the history of the game; and learn about the diverse backgrounds of MLB players. Pretend to be the announcer and deliver a play-by-play using real game clips and sound effects. Learn about the teams that make up Major League Baseball, vocabulary and rules, and how to calculate statistics. Be immersed in the ballpark experience! Tune into radio broadcasts, fill out your scorecard and gear up with pre-game activities. Then head for the stadium arches and hear the ballpark come alive! Catch All-Star information, bloopers and more on the scoreboard, then join the crowd for the seventh-inning stretch. Answer trivia questions, calculate batting averages and solve physics-themed challenges. Recreate the ballpark experience with props, costumes and fun math and literacy activities at ticket sales and concessions.

Oh, goody! The world’s first Peppa Pig Theme Park is opening this month in Tampa Bay with rides and attractions built just for preschoolers and their families—and we can’t wait! Nestled next door to LEGOLAND Florida in Winter Haven, this standalone theme park is truly a preschooler’s paradise. Peppa’s world comes to life and preschoolers and their families are invited in to play and go on great big adventures with rides and attractions designed just for them.

This is a place where little kids can experience their very first roller coaster, like Daddy Pig’s Roller Coaster, which has just enough twists and turns to delight “little piggies.” “We want parents to experience things with their kids, but we also want to empower the kids to be able to have their biggest adventures here, so everything is their size. Everything is put within their perspective,” says Peppa Pig Theme Park’s Kelly Hornick. “It’s such a joy to be able to share my work with my girls who are 2 and 5 years old. They’ve been squealing as much as Peppa has, excited to come to the park.” If kiddos aren’t quite ready to experience a ride by themselves, that’s okay. The rides, like Grampy Rabbit’s Dinosaur Adventure, are designed so a parent or another responsible person aged 14 or older can ride along. A small seat is perched in front of the main seat on the dinosaur ride, so your child gets a front row view, with the comfort of knowing you’re right there behind them. Another attraction we know kids and parents will love is the Muddy Puddles Splash Pad. Be sure to pack a bathing suit when you go. There are changing facilities on site. The splash pad isn’t the only place to keep your cool on hot, sunny days. There are plenty of shade structures throughout the park and even a Cinema where you and the kiddos can pop in to see some of the most beloved episodes of “Peppa Pig.” As you read this, the finishing touches are happening in preparation for the opening of Florida’s newest theme park on Feb. 24, so we don’t quite have all of the images to show you. But from what we’ve seen so far…it’s going to be an experience you don’t want to miss with your preschooler and one you can ONLY experience in Florida!

Strawberry season is here! That means I’ll be flooding my social media pages with tasty strawberry treats and recipes. Florida strawberry season begins at the end of November and runs until April 1. We’re in the peak of the season, when strawberries are bountiful and usually on sale and priced just right! My family’s looking forward to u-pick season at a few of our favorite local strawberry farms. Stop by my Instagram page to see all the yummy treats we make with our u-pick strawberry hauls!
STRAWBERRY PINEAPPLE SALSA WITH CINNAMON TORTILLA CHIPS Ingredients:
Directions:
» 2 cups strawberries cut into small cubes » 2 teaspoons fresh lime or lemon juice » 1 teaspoon sugar (for salsa) » 1/2 cup pineapple, diced » 1/4 cup red onion, diced » 6 flour tortillas, 6-inch size » 1 teaspoon cinnamon » 2 tablespoons butter, melted » 1/4 cup sugar (for cinnamon chips) » fresh cilantro for garnish, optional
1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Set aside a large baking sheet(s).
HOMEMADE STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKE Ingredients: » 2 cups strawberry ice cream » 1 cup frozen strawberries (you can use fresh strawberries, or both) » 3/4 cup almond milk (substitute with whole milk or reduced fat milk) » 1 tablespoon sugar (substitute with honey) Directions: 1. Put strawberries (frozen, fresh or both), milk, ice cream and sugar into a blender and blend thoroughly until smooth and creamy. If it’s too thick, add a little more milk.
2. Wash and cut strawberries, pineapple and onions into smaller sized cubes. 3. In a medium bowl, add pineapple, strawberry and red onions. Add sugar and fresh lime juice. Mix together.
STRAWBERRY NUTELLA TURNOVERS Ingredients: » » » »
1 box frozen puff pastry (2 sheets) 1/2 cup Nutella 9 strawberries, quartered or sliced egg wash, optional
Directions: 1. Remove puff pastry from box and let it thaw for 10 minutes, until bendable.
4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Chill in the fridge until serving.
2. Preheat oven to 400 F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
5. Cut the tortillas into triangles and place them in a large mixing bowl. Add melted butter and toss. Add cinnamon and sugar, tossing until evenly coated.
3. Cut puff pastry into 18 equal squares. Use the creases on the puff pastry to guide you.
6. Place pieces onto prepared baking sheets and bake 3 minutes per side, flipping halfway through. (They bake quickly so pay close attention to prevent them from burning.)
5. Place two slices of strawberry over each dollop of Nutella.
7. Garnish the salsa with fresh cilantro and serve with baked cinnamon chips.
4. Spread 1 teaspoon Nutella in the center of each puff pastry square.
6. Fold pastry in half diagonally and slightly pinch edges to stick. (TIP: If the edges don’t want to stick together, slightly dampen edges with a drop of water and pinch to make it adhere.) 7. Transfer the turnovers to the lined cookie sheet. 8. Brush egg wash over the tops of the turnovers. 9. Bake 12-14 minutes, until golden brown. 10. Let cool for about 10 minutes and enjoy!
2. Pour into glasses and garnish with toppings such as whipped cream, fresh strawberries or sprinkles. Enjoy!

Gasparilla Music Festival is Back!

COVID’s crescendos have affected mental health. Fortunately, music preserves us as it positively impacts emotional well-being. On Feb. 25, Tampa Bay can experience euphoria as the Gasparilla Music Festival kicks off a three-day invasion of Curtis Hixon Park. David Cox, GMF’s original founder and present executive director, spoke with me about GMF 2022 and the Gasparilla Music Foundation’s efforts to support music education in Title 1 schools.
TBPM: What sets February’s GMF apart from the October 2021 festival? DC: For the first time, there’s a full festival on Friday night. Local bands performing at GMF are
showstoppers and, on Friday, Sam E. Hues is no exception.
Kids Fest also returns in February. Imagination Movers, featured on Disney+, headlines Sunday’s Kids Fest. Interactive elements GMF kids know and love, like the graffiti wall and tie dye station, return. St. Petersburg’s James Museum will facilitate a craft. The Tampa Metro Youth Orchestra and School of Rock Tampa will also perform. Sunday’s Kids Fest, which ends at 3 p.m., includes confetti cannons and toilet roll blasters.
TBPM: What do you want Tampa to know about GMF 2022? DC: The pandemic has proven plans change. Presently, no screening measures are in place for
Feb. 25-27. A three-day festival gives ample opportunity for choosing from a motley crew of acts. I’m excited to welcome the Black Pumas—making their Tampa Bay debut on Friday night (Feb. 25). On Sunday (Feb. 27), Trombone Shorty, whose return has been requested, will close out GMF. He’ll play tracks from his latest album, Parking Lot Symphony.
GMF 2022 features rock, hip hop and electronic music—another eclectic lineup with something for everyone in the family. Kids 12 and under remain free; single day, general admission tickets are $45. GMF’s intimate setting means festivalgoers can get close to stages. VIP tickets, $150 per day, include shade tents, bars and special access areas in front of two large stages. Tampa’s art scene has grown immensely in the last decade, and GMF showcases some of that homegrown talent.
TBPM: What has the Gasparilla Music Foundation been working on? DC: Music teachers have faced unique challenges. Underfunded when COVID started, they had to stop
instrument sharing among students. Music programs in Title 1 schools receive little support, so the Foundation is thankful that 2020’s festival raised significant funds for music education. Classroom presentations remain paused; we’re still holding several instrument drives per year. Gently used instruments can be donated at the Recycled Tunes warehouse (1723 W. Cypress St.). Last year, Recycled Tunes donated 530 instruments to Hillsborough County Title 1 schools—ensuring that underserved children have access to hands on music education.

SL: What’s so special about being a designer is the constant inspiration around me. My daughter, first and most, is my true inspiration for the prints. She is full of life and color, so I try to find prints that emulate that. However, in our two most recent collections, I drew inspiration from our beautiful state and the décor around me—from the vibrant flowers to the art deco in South Tampa to the rustic and farmhouse prints that fill our households in the fall. One of my favorite designs was my ruffled romper which I introduced last fall. I made it in three different prints. It was a hit across the board. Everyone loved the tie back closure and the ruffled details.

TBPM: From the sweet and festive prints that the rompers and leggings are made from to the meticulously sewn ruffles on the shoulders of your holiday pinafores, Savvy Jack Wear captures the very essence of childhood and all of the joy that comes with it for kids and parents alike. Where do you draw inspiration from with each collection and which are your favorite/most memorable pieces?

SL: My first job was in high school at Abercrombie Kids, at 17. This was my introduction into the fashion industry. I stayed with them for five years after growing with them into a leadership role. I wanted more for myself after, so I got a job with a prominent women’s luxury brand and have been with them for over 10 years. During my maternity leave, I was spending so much money on clothing that everyone else had, so I decided to start making my daughter’s clothing. My girlfriends suggested I start selling them on Etsy, so I developed a name, and Savvy Jack was born! One order turned into five, then 20, and the rest is history! Savvy Jack is about having fun and standing out in the clothes you are wearing. The brand represents my personality as well. I love to have fun personally and professionally. Life is too short to be anything but fun!

TBPM: How did you get started in the fashion industry, and how does Savvy Jack represent you as a woman and mother?

In honor of Black History Month, I’m shining a well-deserved light on an inspirational and influential Black businesswoman and mother in the Tampa Bay community that I am incredibly honored to call my friend. It only makes sense that to really appreciate how accomplished notable Black leaders in history truly are, we have to acknowledge the reality of Black experience today as well. When these elements combine, a striking portrait of Black entrepreneurship emerges. Savenah Libertiny’s own contributions highlight the Black community’s tremendous creativity, as well as an innate resilience that surfaces out of necessity. With family roots in Jamaica and a booming business that reaches across the United States, Libertiny is sure to make history in the fashion world as she is already a favorite among the industry’s most discerning critics: babies, toddlers and other moms.

TBPM: Despite the increased attention on Black entrepreneurship in recent years, Black businesses have always played a major role in our communities. Can you tell me about some of the Black leaders— dead or alive—who have influenced you and why?
TBPM: Mom to mom: have you ever felt like giving up as the visionary and founder of this brand? What keeps you focused and helps you overcome the hard days that are inevitable with entrepreneurship? For mothers that have felt called to use their creative talent to start something from home, how do you recommend they begin?
SL: Every Black business owner influences me. I think to be able to step out into a world and industries that we are minorities in is an inspiration in itself. I knew getting into the fashion industry, my shot at it would be slim due to the fact that Black designers are rare. And if we are out there, we aren’t being talked about. To have such brilliant artists like Virgil Abloh (who created an incredible brand, OFF White) become the first black artistic director of a successful brand is truly inspiring in itself. Seeing success and Black designers breaking the mold motivates me.
SL: I have felt like giving up probably 2 times a week! Ha! But what keeps me going is my passion for what I do. I cannot see myself doing anything else but this. I am always validated when I receive private messages from customers thanking me for my creation, and sending me photos of their little ones in the clothes I have made. It is a constant reminder that I am doing what God put me on this earth to do. Starting a business from home is not easy, but having the support from your spouse is the most important. My husband has been there every step of the way—between making sure I am making smart financial decisions by creating a budget sheet, to helping me package orders or tagging garments for delivery at Armature Works. He is my support system 100%.
TBPM: Can you share some of the biggest barriers the Black community must overcome when launching their own businesses? What advice do you have for them? SL: Black entrepreneurs lack access to the networks and relationships that could help them make smart business decisions, as well as funding. With the lack of generational wealth within our Black communities, to find family/ friends to invest in our business ventures is hard. Some advice would be to step out of your comfort zone, research as much as you can before diving in, take feedback, and be your own cheerleader. No one can stop you from becoming successful but yourself. Have ambition and drive, and know your business plan. Do something out of the norm to gain funding, and apply to reputable organizations within your community for grants. Join women entrepreneurs groups, and network!
TBPM: What do you want your legacy to be? SL: I want people to know about the barriers I have broken within the fashion industry and as an entrepreneur. I never gave up on my hopes and dreams, I did everything I could to ensure that I gave my daughter the path to do big things in her life. To become a female Black business owner is few and far between —but I never stopped pushing through to make a name for myself. I never let a stigma define me, but I let it be a fundamental piece at keeping me motivated and grounded. TBPM: What is your favorite thing to do with your family in Tampa Bay? SL: Well, everyone will tell you the Libertiny household is a “foodie” household. We love going to new restaurants and traveling to places that have great food! Our daughter definitely has a refined palate. I pray for her future husband!

In her own words: “Any kid can change the world,” and 10-yearold Delanie Dennis has proven this to be true through the impact she is making in the lives of animals all over Tampa. As the host of Delanie’s Lemonade Stand inside Cafe Delanie, where 100% of the proceeds of select menu items, donations and sales of dog toys (handmade by Delanie) go directly to helping animals, she is committed to making a difference and wants everyone to know that “every little bit helps.” Since April 2019, Delanie has raised over $34,000 for organizations and nonprofit rescues that directly benefit the welfare of animals in the greater Tampa Bay area. From mini pony nibbles and skunk kisses to hanging out with the K-9 Unit of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Delanie’s advocacy has allowed her to experience what every animal lover could only dream to do. And with her optimism, hopefulness, and joyfulness, this little girl is everything adults could wish to be.

TBPM: What you’ve accomplished in almost three years is impressive for anyone at any age! Tell us how Delanie’s Lemonade Stand started. What motivated you to become active, and why lemonade?
TBPM: Do you feel like other kids can relate to or
DD: The lemonade stand idea started when I was reading a book called “Alex and her Amazing Lemonade Stand.” After I was done reading that book, a few hours later I was watching TV, and I saw a sad commercial from the Humane Society that had so many sad animals. And that’s what motivated me - that, I really had to do a lemonade stand.
DD: I do think that some kids can relate to what I’m doing, but some kids don’t exactly understand— and that’s OK. Some of my friends helped with this mission by donating and coming to some of my events. Ever since I’ve been in school, I’ve been sharing a lot of things about the animals and the lemonade stand. And I’ve been telling everybody: Adopt, don’t shop! Adopt from shelters instead of buying from pet stores.
TBPM: How do you choose the group or animal type you want to work with? How long does a fundraiser last? DD: Well what we do to choose a group is: Me and my mom research a few different rescues. We read all about them, and then I pick the charity. We also make sure that they’re a real nonprofit, and we call them so we know that they’re able to do it. A fundraisers lasts for one month, and all the proceeds in that one month go to that one animal charity. At the Cafe, we have a special menu that changes weekly and includes lemonade with three different food dishes. Whatever is bought off of that menu goes 100% to the animals. As well, we have a daily special Monday through Friday that 100% supports the animals. And we post that information on the Cafe Delanie Facebook Page. I share that in the Cafe as well when I am there on Monday and Tuesday.
TBPM: How do you set goals for each fundraiser? What type of research do you do ahead of working with a nonprofit partner? DD: When we are about to work with a nonprofit, we research and read everything about them and see what type of animals they have. We also look and see if there are any sick or any hurt animals in their rescue, and we share them on the Facebook page as well. With each fundraiser, we try to get to at least $1,200. When the Lemonade Stand in the Cafe starts to get a bit slow, I’ll make dog toys, cat toys and bracelets and sell them to get a bit more money for the nonprofits.

TBPM: How many pets do you have? Have you ever adopted from the rescues you’ve partnered with? DD: I have 18 pets, and I adopted from the rescues I’ve partnered with five times. I’ve adopted from sanctuaries, the Humane Society, Florida All Retriever Rescue, Forever Home Animal Rescue and RVR Horse Rescue. At RVR, where we adopted our horse from, we also have monkeys, ferrets, sugar gliders, kinkajous and a lot of different types of animals. (At RVR, we are permitted to assist with rescuing exotics as well, but we don’t get too involved with that side of it as much because of their needs.) When it comes to regular household animals, we’ve rescued all different kinds—horses, cats, dogs, turtles, sugar gliders, pigs, guinea pigs, horses, cat, dogs. We’ve got it all!
TBPM: What is the plan for Delanie’s Lemonade Stand in 2022? DD: My goals are to keep on spreading the word about animals, get another adoption fair done, get a lot more animals rescued and get to at least $40,000 because that is going to make me feel super good. “Ah music, a magic beyond all we do here,” wrote JK Rowling in her novel “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” and she couldn’t have been closer to the truth. Aside from children’s books and school resources, the TampaHillsborough County Public Library has a lot to offer to young performing artists and music lovers in general. A simple keyword search of the library’s catalog reveals nearly 20,000 items related to music, about half of which is audio music. Styles of music range from pop to jazz, classical to rock, country to blues, musicals to soundtracks and much more. There is music specifically for children as well as kid-friendly albums the whole family can enjoy. The library’s extensive music collection includes an equally broad selection of streaming music titles. Visit HCPLC.org/Music and choose Hoopla to explore digital music collections and genres. In addition to the standard genres, youth may enjoy collections designed to appeal by age such as Kids’ Tunes: Lullabies, Kids’ Tunes: Classical, Disney Channel Musicals, Tween Central and Teen Chill Beats. Did you also know that the library has several branches with recording studios? These studios are equipped with green screens, audio and video recording equipment, and computers with audio and video editing programs. Band and choir students can easily set up music stands and instruments to record practice sessions, and theatre students can come together to complete performance projects. Using the recording studio’s editing software, theatre students can impress their teachers and classmates with polished and professional looking productions, especially when including unique and interesting backgrounds using the green screen. Also, music students can be sure that only their best recordings are used for auditions and seating assignments in class. Besides completing school assignments, the recording studios can also be used to create recordings of your young performing artists for family and friends by sharing them online. Even if your child doesn’t need to record anything, the library’s studios make for excellent practice rooms. As a sizeable, open space equipped with sound dampening technology, the studios are suitable for singing, playing instruments, running lines and dancing. Students don’t need to be experts in using editing software nor recording equipment. Library staff at these locations are well versed in the use of these technologies and can help your child get started on their project. The library also has access to a handful of online learning platforms such as LinkedIn Learning and Universal Class. A quick search on LinkedIn Learning results in a variety of tutorials for programs like Audacity, iMovie, Pro Tools, Premier Pro and several others. Likewise, Universal Class features hours of lessons in the use of Adobe Premier and Final Cut Pro. HCPLC.org/OnlineClasses Perhaps your child isn’t old enough to be in an elementary school chorus, middle school band or high school theatre production. Don’t let that keep you from opening the doors to a world of music. You can borrow children’s books introducing musical instruments or kids’ guides to making music. The library’s collection also offers printed music for beginners for instruments such as violin, piano, drums and guitar. Besides borrowing music CDs or streaming music, you can borrow a ukulele kit and learn to play songs using the included method book provided by the Tampa Bay Ukulele Society. Like your libraries, music is for everyone. Let the library be your child’s destination for their musical experiences. Take full advantage of what the library has to offer.

Parenthood can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. It can also be the most challenging, especially if you have a child with special needs. Here are few simple tips from Hillsborough County Public Schools to help you through this journey as you advocate for your child.
ACCEPTANCE: Accept your child for who they are while loving and supporting them to be all they can be. SELF-CARE: Take care of yourself so you are as healthy and strong as you can be to take care of others,
especially your child with special needs. Take time with friends, read a book, have a hobby and make sure you schedule your annual doctors’ appointments and keep them. Whatever it is that keeps you healthy and balanced, do it. If you need help, ask for help, and be specific as to what would be helpful.
LEARN AND RESEARCH: Learn about your child’s disability, condition or special needs. Research dif-
ferent support groups or organizations that know about your child’s special needs. Seek second opinions when appropriate. Ask questions. Take the time you need to make an informed decision. Be cautious of information on the internet or the advice of family and friends. Someone else’s experiences may not be right for you and your child. Remember your child is unique and you must do what’s best for your child with what you know. Be confident in your decisions. Be OK when plans need to change because life or situations change. Learn about policies, procedures or laws that protect your child as a patient and/or student.
SHARING INFORMATION: Share your knowledge of your child with professionals and school staff. What works at home? What has not worked at home? Share past experiences in different situations, successful or not, especially with new professionals and teachers. When professionals or teachers share their ideas, ask for details as it relates to your child. It is OK to ask for clarification. What does that look like? Who will do this? How often?
RESOLVING CONFLICTS: When you have made every effort to come to an agreement or resolution, take your concerns to the next level, ask for a second opinion or request a neutral person to help facilitate the conversation. INVOLVE YOUR CHILD: Involve your child in decision making when appropriate. For younger children, you might include them with the final plan and ask if they have questions. As they get older, they may be able to share what would help them. Overall, stay positive and ask for help when you need it.

At 2 years old, Grayson Shuff is always on the move, a whirlwind of motion from morning to night, running laps around his house, wrestling with his dad, experimenting with his little skateboard and playing with his cousins, siblings and dogs. Unless he takes his shirt off to reveal his scars, says his mother, Colleen Shuff, you’d never know that her tow-headed toddler had undergone multiple surgeries and procedures already, including open-heart surgery.
Grayson was born with the congenital heart defect tetralogy
of Fallot. A common but complex congenital heart problem, this condition has four components: a hole between the lower chambers of the heart; an obstruction from the heart to the lungs; the aorta (blood vessel) lying over the hole in the lower chambers; and the muscle surrounding the lower right chamber becoming overly thickened. The diagnosis came like a bolt from the blue during a routine ultrasound appointment when Colleen was 22 weeks pregnant with Grayson. Colleen still remembers what the doctor who gave her the news told her. “He told me (snowboarder) Shaun White has tetralogy of Fallot, and he that if he has it, this kid could handle anything.” Things moved fast after the diagnosis. At 22 weeks in utero, Grayson acquired a cardiologist—Dr. J. Blaine John, a pediatric and fetal cardiologist at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Weekly scans monitored his growth and a team of physicians prepared for his birth and subsequent care. Meanwhile, the Shuffs moved from northern Pasco County to within 25 minutes of the hospital, and their extended family began organizing care.
Grayson was born at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital in September, 2019, displaying the trademark “blue baby” coloring resulting from oxygen-poor blood being circulated to the body instead of going to the lungs first. “His oxygen levels were very low,” explains Dr. Jeremy Ringewald, pediatric cardiologist and the director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. After a day in the NICU, Grayson was transported across the street to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital where surgeons performed a shunt operation to connect a tube between his aorta and pulmonary arteries. Three months later, the shunt was removed, and the hole patched closed. At 10 months, he had stents put in his pulmonary arteries to open them up, and later, to widen them. He has had six blood transfusions and two monthlong stays in the hospital’s pediatric cardiac ICU. Perhaps the most challenging part was when Grayson was sent home with a special pair of socks that monitored his vital signs, and with strict instructions to his parents to try to never let him cry because it would upset his oxygen levels. “Any night he woke up crying, we had to do everything other than standing on our heads to make him stop,” Colleen says. The slightest whimper while driving to the hospital for his weekly visits meant pulling over immediately to soothe him. There were other scares—once, a blood clot formed inside his shunt. Another time, his stitches came undone.
Colleen says that one thing that really helped was that she had been able to meet Dr. Ringewald even before Grayson was born and hear in detail how his care would be managed. It wasn’t just the doctors who made the family’s life easier. A feeding therapist at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital helped Colleen pump and feed Grayson, who struggled with gastric ref lux. Child Life Specialists entertained Grayson during the 30-45 minutes it might take to get an IV line into his veins and worked with siblings Oliver and Belle to help ease their fears of the pediatric ICU. On Halloween, when Colleen was rushing to go home to take the older kids trick or treating, two of the Child Life Specialists gave her pillowcases filled with candy and treats. Dr. Ringewald explains that it is this team effort with multiple subspecialties that makes St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital the biggest and busiest heart catheterization programs in Florida. With a surgical track record dating back to the 1980s, St. Joseph’s Children’s pediatric unit and cardiac catheterization laboratory has a team of highly trained specialists to handle any cardiac condition or emergency, ranging from the fetal echocardiogram unit to dedicated pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists. Dr. Ringewald expects that Grayson will need a few more procedures to adjust his cardiac equipment to his growth, all of which can be done right here at St. Joseph’s. “We treat patients from minus 9 to 99,” he says. “Whatever you need, we’re here.” For now, Grayson has more immediate concerns: He will be starting part time daycare and possibly T-ball soon. Colleen recalls how they had worried that he would be too frail for the roughhousing that his father, Ryan, enjoyed with his other children. But the toddler (who she says is built like a “little linebacker”) cheerfully tackles his dad. “He’s a maniac!” Colleen says. “Nothing fazes him. He doesn’t stop moving from when he wakes up till when he goes to bed. We were concerned about what he’d be able to do … but it turns out, we don’t have to hold him back from anything he wants to do. ONE YEAR LATER WITH A NEW HEART: Wilfre’s Back on the Soccer Field

Just a year ago, a promising young soccer star from Pinellas Park entered the emergency center at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. The seemingly healthy 15-year-old had taken a turn for the worse and suddenly needed the most aggressive form of life support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

His heart was failing him. Time was of the essence. “I couldn’t breathe well, I had been throwing up and had diarrhea,” recalls Wilfre. “I was really sick.” Meagan King, R.N., and Daren D. Coleman, a pediatric paramedic, immediately noted an elevated and rapid heart rate with an abnormal rhythm, low temperature and rapid breathing. That prompted Danielle Hirsch, M.D., an emergency medicine physician in the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Emergency Center on duty that day, to order a chest X-ray and an electrocardiogram (EKG). “The results showed his heart was big and it was not functioning normally,” Hirsch says. “His vital signs were becoming more unstable.” He went into cardiac arrest for two minutes. The EC team stabilized his heart rhythm, while the pediatric cardiology team and cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) teams were on standby to work hand-in-hand in Wilfre’s care. Cardiac surgeons Awais Ashfaq, MBBS, and Eric Ceithamel, M.D., swiftly placed Wilfre on ECMO to keep him alive. “It felt like the world stopped — the moment was very terrible for me,” says Wilfre’s mom, Maria.
but it’s possible it was due to an infection Wilfre contracted,” Ashfaq explains. “The walls get thin, and the heart chambers enlarge. That’s a function of deterioration of the heart,” explains Quintessenza, who is co-director of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Heart Institute. “It looked like it had been going for days, weeks, maybe months, but Wilfre hit a critical point where his heart just couldn’t keep up.” Wilfre was converted from ECMO to an artificial pump to support his left ventricle, which was the identified problem area. He stayed on this for 10 days and received an echocardiogram every other day in which the pump was turned off to see how his heart was functioning by itself. It was a waiting game to see if his heart would bounce back. “We gave that heart a good chance of getting better, but it just never quite looked like it was going to,” Quintessenza says. “But all of the parts of the Heart Institute and heart transplant program were in place, there’s a whole village involved.” Within four days, Wilfre had a match. On Jan. 6, 2021, after about four hours in the operating room, Wilfre had his new heart, and second chance at life. A few days later, he passed a soccer ball in the hallway of the CVICU with the very doctors who saved his life.
He wasn’t out of the woods yet, but the CVICU team, under the direction of cardiac surgeon James Quintessenza, M.D., and Ashfaq now had him under their care and watchful eye.
“It was truly incredible to see him kicking the soccer ball a few weeks after he was literally a heartbeat away from not being with us,” says Quintessenza.

the soccer field. As a freshman, he made his high school’s varsity soccer at Dixie Hollins. Soccer has been his passion since he was 7 years old, and this was always a dream. Currently, Wilfre has monthly follow-up visits to the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program clinic with Alfred Asante-Korang, M.D., FACC, a pediatric cardiologist who has cared for patients post-heart transplant for more than 20 years. Heart transplants involve lifelong follow-up care, but in time, the appointments become less frequent. “Wilfre is the perfect transplant patient who takes his transplant medications without fail, and he is now only taking four medications,” says Asante-Korang. “The entire transplant team loves him, and he brings joy to our faces when we see him.” The Emergency Center team of physicians, nurses, paramedics, residents and pharmacists who sprang into action as Wilfre stepped through the door are also overjoyed to see him running on the soccer field again. “Wilfre is a kid that I will never forget,” says Hirsch. “He is truly an amazing individual who has overcome great obstacles, and I hope he continues to do amazing things in his future knowing he can overcome anything after what he experienced.” Wilfre is scheduled for cardiac catheterization and biopsy in February 2022, and if he continues on his current trajectory, his heart is expected to last well into mid-adulthood. “I am happy to be alive with a brand-new heart,” Wilfre says.
