blues for the whole family awaits you on Bayshore Boulevard. I was truly humbled when asked to be the guest editor for this month’s edition of Tampa Bay Parenting magazine. As a Tampa native, I’ve seen and done a lot of things around our great town, but this is a first! The Warrens have been in Tampa for quite a while. My son is a 5th generation Tampa native. Our family was involved in founding the Tampa Coca-Cola Bottling Company, the Merrymakers Club and the University Club. For many years, we have been actively involved in Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, The Salvation Army and the Tampa Yacht & Country Club. I am currently the director of development of the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation headquartered here in Tampa, and live steps from Hillsborough Bay with my wife Lauren, son Whit, and daughter Wesleigh. We love Tampa and her rich history and tradition.

January is my favorite month for family fun, but unless you are willing to pay through the nose for a trip to Wally World in the ‘ol Family Truckster, family-friendly events are getting harder to find. Fear not, fellow citizens! The best medicine to cure the post-holiday blues for the whole family awaits you on Bayshore Boulevard on Saturday, Jan. 19. Believe it or not, the Gasparilla Children’s Parade has become the largest kid’s parade in the country. Coupled with the fireworks extravaganza that evening, you’ve got hours and hours of entertainment that won’t break the bank. After the kids have had their fill of pillaging and plundering, maroon them at grandma and grandpa’s house so that you and your consort can walk the plank at the 115th anniversary of the Gasparilla Invasion and Parade of Pirates on Saturday, Jan. 26. Come party with the pirates and remember, dead men tell no tales!

For many, January is about resolutions. For Tampa, January is about resolving to showcase tradition. Gasparilla brings bountiful beads, but the memories made with loved ones are the most precious treasures. The parade, dating back to 1904, was started by Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla—now several hundred members strong. Krewe members share why membership is meaningful and how their children carry on traditions.

YE MYSTIC KREWE OF GASPARILLA’S JERAMIAH BUSTIN

A first-generation krewe man, Jeramiah’s Gasparilla memories date back to his childhood, when he remembers walking to the children’s parade with his family and sitting on a blanket in the median. “It felt like Christmas,” he recalls. His mom, a former parade participant, dressed her kids like pirates and bought them plastic swords from street vendors. A YMKG member since 2010, Bustin enjoys sharing the magic of Gasparilla with locals, tourists and transplants. He’s introduced Tampa to corporations, helped Visit Tampa Bay with community outreach efforts, and participated in numerous local parades. “We are ambassadors for Tampa,” he says. Bustin treasures his experiences with YMKG’s Ye Gaspar’s Grenadiers. Throughout the year, the group visits All Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and Tampa General to lift pediatric patients’ spirits: “We give patients beads if their immune systems are capable. We take coloring books and cannon balls, too.” This year, Bustin will share Gasparilla’s nostalgia and magic with his sons—Callan (7) and Caleb (5). They’ve played in his pirate gear for years and look forward to riding on YMKG’s float during the children’s parade. The boys’ membership in YMKG is years away, but Bustin hopes they eventually experience the camaraderie and support the organization’s given him. “I’ve made friends I wouldn’t have otherwise met. We look out for each other.”

YE MYSTIC KREWE OF GASPARILLA’S BRIAN AGLIANO

Agliano is a Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla legacy. “My dad was a krewe member,” Agliano says. “I remember attending YMKG parties as a 13-year-old. I’m proud I joined and am carrying on traditions.” A YMKG member for 12 years, Agliano recounts Gasparilla as a favorite family day during his childhood. Now a father and uncle, he loves sharing the pirate’s life with his daughter and two nephews. On children’s parade day, Agliano and his dad take the kids to Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club for breakfast and pirate makeovers. This year marks Bella’s third

parade with Agliano. Now that she’s 8, he’s especially excited: “She’s strong enough to throw beads to spectators now. It’s a blast seeing her and my nephews excited about throwing beads and then receiving beads when we attend tent parties.” Agliano enjoys wearing pirate garb and visiting Bella’s school to invade classrooms, hand out beads and read pirate stories. “When younger, she was confused about why daddy’s voice was coming out of a pirate,” he laughs. For Brian, YMKG is quintessential Tampa: “It’s great bringing so much life into our city on parade day. It’s always been my favorite day of the year.”

For Iavarone, Gasparilla’s been lifelong and yearround. She’s passing the traditions to her children, Declan (7) and Malin (3), who will ride the KQAR float for the third and first time, respectively. “Growing up, parade days meant looking for my uncle and best friends’ dads—all pirates,” Iavarone reminisces. “Now, my favorite memory is riding the KQAR float with my son while pregnant with Malin. She’s my legacy for the krewe and is ecstatic about her costume. A former costume designer, Iavarone designs krewe members’ costumes and hosts an annual hat making party. “Gasparilla lasts all year for us, from designing to walking,” she says. Co-owner of Malio’s and Remedy, she hosts enviable parade after-parties. 2019 marks an inaugural block party. Community engagement is part of their pirate lifestyle, and the family has participated in toy drives and wrapping parties. Iavarone is proud to be KQAR’s hype girl. “I carry a tambourine and make people dance for beads. The smiles I get from kids and older people are amazing.”

1 ASSESS THE MESS

Take inventory of what you have in your home. Donate, recycle or trash items you don’t use anymore. Get comfortable with letting go of those unused items despite who gave them to you. Remember: It’s just stuff. Our professional organizer had a great tip to keep a ‘Donate’ box in the house so you can constantly take inventory of what you don’t really use anymore. When it fills up, donate it and start again.

I never thought we’d have to do it, but we did. We hired a certified professional organizer. I sounds crazy, I know, but it was life changing. Like many busy parents, I thought I could get our home in order on my own, but between our busy schedule and my lack of will power, it wasn’t getting done. A friend recommended we hire Susan Layden, a Tampa based Certified Professional Organizer and with her help—it happened! The changes we’ve made in our home have helped simplify our daily routines, which is why I wanted to share some of the top tips I learned with you!

2 CHECK YOUR DRAWERS

Seriously. Before the organizer came into our home, I would stack our family’s clothing items like shirts and shorts on top of one another. She pointed out that this routine makes things hard to find. Truth. On her advice, we now we roll each item and place in the drawer so each clothing item can be clearly seen. I didn’t believe it at first, but this method actually takes up the same amount of space, if not less.

3 EVERYTHING NEEDS A HOME

This was a big tip that we learned as we worked with the professional organizer. While we attempted to keep like items together before we hired her, we didn’t always stick with this principle. Now we put things away with purpose, especially our children’s toys. It keeps toy sets together and not scattered throughout the house. Use labels to remind yourself and others about where things ‘live’ in your home.

4 USE BINS

They don’t have to be fancy, but it helps group items together for easy access. We keep medicines and vitamins in their own separate bins so we can easily pull them out of the cabinet and grab what we need and lock away to keep curious kids out. I keep bins in our pantry for our kids’ snacks and school lunch items to make the lunch packing routine a bit easier. I even use them in the fridge to keep like items together. Again—they don’t have to be fancy. I opted for clear bins, but we also use cardboard boxes and baskets in our pantry. Turn tables also transformed our spice cabinet and pantry so everything is easy to find and access! Who knew?

5 DON’T AIM FOR PERFECTION

We LOVE The Home Edit, but it’s not reality for most families. (You should still totally follow their Instagram account for ideas and inspiration! @thehomeedit) The goal is to help simplify your routine. Start small. We started our home organization in our kitchen since that’s where we spend a lot of our time and where we needed the most help. The kids’ rooms were next.

6 STOP BUYING MORE STUFF

This can be hard. Working with an organizer has helped me think twice before purchasing something I likely don’t need. And hey, it saves money, so it’s a win-win!

an. 1 means new beginnings. It also means revising approaches to what we already have in progress. Whether they are kindergarteners or seniors, kids of all ages benefit from conversations focused on goals, grit and the importance of keeping our internal batteries charged.

CHECKLISTS

Winter break offers kids a chance to recharge by engaging in both personally fulfilling activities and needed downtime. As back-to-school day approaches, it’s a good time to teach kids the utility of checklists. Checklists are powerful tools; some of the most detail-oriented professionals, like pilots and surgeons, utilize them. For listing feasible goals and to-do items alike, checklists scaffold focused undertakings. Feasible goals, like learning 10 new sight words biweekly or bringing an SAT score up by “x” points, support success and demolish anxiety. Reasonable to-do lists serve as essential reminders and undergird needed feelings of accomplishment as items are crossed off.

TENSION

A phrase I’ve come to appreciate and pass on to both my students and children is “embrace the shake.” It’s at those points of tension, when muscles are shaking, that development occurs. When we commit to working through the shake—even in our brain—we develop grit. Kids get tired. They may hit the metaphorical wall. Engage them in conversations about the drawbacks of taking the path of least resistance, using personal examples. Also, let kids in on the fact that our motivation also wanes. It helps humanize us and gives them useful insight to the power of mind over matter. We can share ready-to-use strategies that help us “embrace the shake” and break through “the wall.”

ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountability partners are as useful for 4-year-olds as they are for 40-year-olds. When we tell a trusted person that we feel tempted to give up, we protect ourselves from the dangers of becoming silos. It’s imperative kids learn that successes, great and small, are propelled by support from and collaboration with others. We should show children how the adage, “it takes a village,” plays out in our lives and contributes to the family unit’s success. While I’m a big proponent of students learning to hold themselves accountable, I also reinforce how essential partnerships are in reminding us that we can conquer to-do lists, break through walls, and succeed.

THE STORY BEHIND TURTLE BUDDY tep into smoothie icon Xtreme Juice on South Dale Mabry, and you’ll notice something new: The straws have Earthfriendly swagger. Smoothies require sippers, but owners Karrie and Chris Mueller no longer cringe at the thought of all that plastic. The founders of Turtle Buddy are spreading alternative straws throughout the Bay Area and the nation. “When that video showing turtles choking on plastic just about broke the Internet, we really felt a desire to act,” Chris says. “Obviously, the smoothie industry is going to need straws, but we knew there had to be a better choice.” The challenge was finding a straw sturdy enough to withstand the thickest smoothie but still biodegrade. Paper didn’t pass the durability test, but PLA straws proved a worthy alternative. PLA is chemically compostable and structurally similar to classic plastic. Unlike conventional straws, which take up to 500 years to break down, PLA is made of cornstarch. It’s also chemically compostable. Patrons of Xtreme Juice now sip concoctions like Mango Madness and Cherry Mountain through Turtle Buddy PLA sippers, and the movement is spreading. Turtle Buddy offers PLA and bamboo straws to other establishments through TurtleBuddy.com, and that means custom wrappers, branded product and, we can only guess, plenty of happy turtles. As an overall goal, Turtle Buddy is committed to the cleanup of the Pacific garbage patch, a massive floating mess located between California and Hawaii. “We donate to a variety of organizations that remove trash from our beaches and oceans,” Chris says. “As a company, we pledge to help with general trash collection as well.” Turtle Buddy collects 100 pounds of trash each week. And the merchandise available on the website comes with a perk: For each item sold, the company will properly dispose of a five pound bucket of trash. Even the detritus on the side of the road can end up in our oceans, the Muellers say; every bit makes a difference. Their plan is to tackle the issue one straw at a time. lways great to hear from “Me Time”, isn’t it? A bit of a tease because we know it exists but it just never seems to work out. We know we need it but how do we achieve it? What does “it” even mean? Everyone is going to have a different definition of what “Me Time” means to them. Is it exercise? Perhaps it’s getting our nails done. Maybe it’s figuring out how to get some years back, how to be healthier and sleep better. For some, it will be locking ourselves in the pantry for a deep breath, quiet and the stash of chocolate chip cookies no one has discovered yet. They all sound blissful, don’t they? There is no denying the lack of time, however it’s important and vital to make the time. Why? Creating “Me Time” and modifying our behaviors will create changes in our relationships with our kids, spouses, family and friends. Yes, “Me Time” will make us all better parents, wives, daughters and besties. A happy parent is a more patient parent. Our head will no longer be spinning out of control, and that means creating productivity in our lives. Imagine that? Finding the time we think we don’t have will actually make the time we do have more productive. Boom. Living in Tampa makes it easy to find “Me Time” solutions that are affordable, quick and effective—and in some cases, unusual! Something as simple as polished nails can make a mom feel pretty, confident and put together. VIP service with a cocktail at Tampa Nails? Even better! It’s okay to be the weirdo riding down Bayshore Boulevard singing loud and proud. Therapy, exercise class and outdoors time, all in one. Normal is overrated anyway. Whatever your definition of “Me Time” is, find it. Your life will change. The relationships will change. It’s not realistic to expect “Me Time” every day, but to start, strive for what is realistic with your schedule. Form a relationship with your “Me Time” and learn your how, when and why. Soon that jam packed schedule won’t seem as stressful. Soon the dog who ate your sunglasses, again, won’t make you as angry. Soon the time it takes for your kids to get out of the house in the morning won’t leave you pulling your hair out. Okay, the last one may be a stretch, but it’s about progress, not perfection, right?

any New Year’s resolutions focus on what we want to change in our lives. But if your goal for 2019 is more happiness, you might want to start thinking about what you already have. Gratitude is a simple concept with powerful benefits. Your first gratitude break might leave you feeling a little calmer. Turn that into a habit, and you’ll start to see increased health and happiness. Your stress levels lower, your physical health improves and you build better friendships and relationships. As a parent, it’s a valuable routine to pass on to your kids, too. Young children can learn to appreciate others and look outside themselves. Older students may find a gratitude practice helps them manage school stress better, in the same way it helps adults cope with work. Hofstra professor Jeffrey Froh, a psychologist, studied gratitude in schools and found that middle school students who focused on the good in their lives were more optimistic and felt better about life and school than other students.

WHAT IS GRATITUDE?

Gratitude is about giving thanks or feeling gratefulness. Harvard Medical School links it to what you already have, calling gratitude a “thankful appreciation” for what you have received. When you express gratitude, you’re acknowledging the goodness that has come your way in tangible and intangible forms. To make the experience more meaningful, think about why you feel appreciative. Corbett Prep teachers prompt students to go beyond their initial responses and include reasons for their gratitude. Instead of saying they have gratitude for their parents, for example, students are taught to say why. “I have gratitude for my family because they spend time with me,” one kindergartner wrote. “I have gratitude for my family and friends,” another shared, “because they make me happy.”

Corbett Prep teachers taught a lesson on showing and receiving gratitude as part of a new wellbeing curriculum that the nonprofit Contentment Foundation is rolling out to schools internationally. Learning how to accept thanks and compliments strengthens social connections and compassion. In the lesson, students take turns sharing – verbally or through pictures or thank you notes – what they appreciate about other students. Teachers coach the gratitude recipients to respond with a nods or a “thank you” instead of downplaying the nice comments others give. Practicing this is fun because everyone has a chance to demonstrate and feel appreciated. Like any New Year’s resolution, your new gratitude habit may feel awkward and clumsy at first. It’s similar to exercise – taking time to make an effort is as important as what you do. Once you establish it as a habit, your gratitude muscle grows. The process becomes easier, more natural and more enjoyable. You’ll feel gratitude that you started as you begin to look around you with a more positive mindset.

HOW CAN YOU PRACTICE GRATITUDE?

Journaling is a popular way to get into the gratitude habit because it works. Studies show that people who keep gratitude journals exercise more regularly, make more progress toward their goals and are more optimistic, according to Robert Emmons, a psychology professor at University of California, Davis, who has done extensive research on gratitude. Shawn Achor, bestselling author of “The Happiness Advantage,” says in a TED Talk that listing what you have gratitude for daily can actually rewire your brain so you start to see the world through a more positive lens, which leads to increased success personally and professionally. Finding three new things each day for 21 days helps the brain establish a new pattern to seek out positivity over negativity, Achor says. Families might also find success in jotting down short notes for a gratitude jar throughout the year, saving them to read together on New Year’s Eve. Or try a different approach for visual learners and take photos

teve Johnson, fourthgeneration citrus grower and cattle rancher, began his involvement in agriculture as soon as he could walk. “Growing up working with my dad and grand-dad meant putting in long hours, but it also meant spending a lot of time each with my family,” Johnson says. Johnson owns and operates Johnson Harvesting, Inc., and Treeair Cattle Co., in Hardee and Manatee Counties. He grows several varieties of citrus spanning more than 600 acres. Treeair Cattle Co., started out as a hobby for Johnson and his father, but together, they have grown their herd to more than 800 beef cattle. Johnson’s children and his wife, Andrea, help manage the office and enjoy spending time with Dad at work. “I love that I have the opportunity

to take my children to work with me on any given day. I also feel confident that I can pass down to my children—who will be the fifth generation of Johnsons in agriculture—a set of thriving businesses that complement each other. And that I know my children are excited about,” Johnson says. In 2016, Johnson was awarded a This Farm CARES designation by Florida Farm Bureau Federation for his long- term commitment to protecting natural resources. By implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs), he is able to improve water quality and water conservation throughout each of his properties. BMPs are practical, costeffective actions that agricultural producers take to conserve water and reduce the amount of pesticides, fertilizers, animal waste and other impurities that impact our water resources. “Environmental stewardship is very important to what I do every single day,” Johnson says. “My land will not return anything to me if I do not take care of it. I use BMPs to improve water quality and reduce water use, just as my dad and his father did before me.” Through the successful implementation of BMPs, Florida’s farmers and ranchers show a sincere commitment to the protection and preservation of natural resources for generations to come. Since 2001, nearly 800 farm families have been awarded a This Farm CARES designation. CARES is an acronym which stands for County Alliance for Responsible Environmental Stewardship and is a Florida Farm Bureau Federation program that publicly recognizes farmers and ranchers who voluntarily implement BMPs on their farms. Whether you’re expecting or have a newborn at home, there are three very important safety rules to remember from the time you’re pregnant until your child is in preschool (or even older). These safety tips will help prevent drowning, suffocation from unsafe sleep, and abusive head trauma.

ABC's OF SLEEP

PARENTS' TIMEOUT

Until your baby can lift their head, it’s essential to follow the ABCs of safe sleep Alone, on their Backs, and in a Crib. Bring a pack ‘n play when traveling or if your baby will be sleeping at someone else’s house. Never place a baby on a couch, blow-up mattress or adult bed – even if it is for a few minutes. Your baby may be getting plenty of sleep, but you likely won’t feel well-rested. This stage of parenting can be exhausting and stressful. A quick way to de-stress when your baby won’t stop crying is to place them safely in their crib and go into another room for a few minutes. De-stressing is important. Use coping mechanisms to keep from shaking your baby out of frustration. Even one shake can be fatal or cause permanent brain damage.

EYES ON BABY ALWAYS

From infancy to the toddler stage, continue to use safe stress relief outlets and be aware of the constant threat of drowning. It becomes a concern as soon as your baby is able to crawl. Watch your child while at the pool and beach, but remember there are hidden drowning hazards everywhere. Children can drown in as little as one inch of water and in 20 seconds, so be sure that they’re unable to get to pet water bowls, toilets and bathtubs. Always shut and lock back doors that lead to pools, canals, lakes and retention ponds, and invest in a pool fence. There is no substitute for supervision so ensure that you, or someone you know, is watching your child at all times. While these tips are essential to remember and use every day, keep in mind that every baby’s development is unique and should be considered regarding the time frame of these tips.

Pregnancy is an exciting time and wellmeaning friends and family will likely give you gifts. Although they are well-intended, cute teddy bears, soft blankets and decorative crib bumpers should never be used in the crib. Infants can easily suffocate from these items in their crib since they can’t lift their head if their mouth or nose becomes covered. All your baby will need is a fitted sheet. Always remember the ABCs of safe sleep during naptime or bedtime – Alone, on their Backs, and in a Crib. Pregnancy is also a good time to think about the placement of your baby’s crib. Parents may initially consider co-sleeping for extra bonding, but infants are 40 times more likely to die in adult beds than in their own crib. Studies show that babies bond just as well in a crib in your room or in a bassinet placed next to your bed.

alling all pint-size pirates and diminutive buccaneers: Your day has come. And lucky you, because only in Tampa Bay do we have an entire afternoon set aside for the tiniest of our sea-faring folk to strut their stuff up and down Bayshore Boulevard. The Children’s Gasparilla is Saturday, Jan. 19. Whether you’re new in town or a seasoned buccaneer who keeps her dagger sharpened and his seafaring legs braced, this day might be the most fun one of the calendar year till Halloween and Christmas swing back around. In addition to the actual parade, which features dozens of floats rolling down Bayshore Boulevard throwing beads, there’s a bicycle rodeo, a preschooler’s stroll, an “air invasion” and SOCOM jump, and to cap it all off, a magnificent fireworks display over the bay. This year, the parade is sponsored by Chick-fil-A for the first time. “We are excited about the new partnership with Chickfil-A this year!” says Maiken Stefany, vice president of Events and Development at Eventfest. “They’ve come on board as our Presenting Sponsor for the Children’s Gasparilla and there’s going to be a lot of fun and great activations taking place with them!”

At the 2019 Gasparilla Preschooler’s Stroll presented by ZooTampa at Lowry Park, a 14-year tradition that was started in 2005, kids 5 and under can strut their stuff down a halfmile parade route from Howard to Rome Avenue. Any little ones who don’t yet have their land legs can parade in or on a decorated scooter, stroller, bicycle or tricycle. Grand-pirates and others can get the best view of the parade from the Howard Avenue bleachers.

Ships are all very well, but sometimes, a pirate needs his or her wheels. Come check if your skills are up to par by participating in the popular Bicycle Rodeo on Bayshore Boulevard between Rome Avenue and Dakota Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “The clinic is a basic skills course and general education of bike safety for kids ages 4-17,” explains Tampa Police Officer David DiMarco. “Our target audience is typically 6-14 years of age. Every kid participating will receive a free helmet that was donated from FDOT while supplies last.” The event will be staffed with volunteers from Hillsborough County BPAC, St. Joseph’s Hospital Safe Routes to School, and Bike/Walk/ Tampa Bay.

This is the main event, and each year, the crowds have only gotten bigger! So come early and find a good spot. The Children’s Gasparilla Parade will begin at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard, proceed north along Bayshore Boulevard and end at Edison Avenue. Past parades have seen more than 100 units roll past, with marching bands, dance units and numerous school, community and neighborhood organizations. The highlight, of course, are the krewes and their elaborate floats. This is where kids 6 and above can participate. Train your eyes on the skies for two incredible shows put on by the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Parachute Team as they perform a “Gasparilla Air Invasion,” landing on Bayshore Boulevard just before the start of the children’s parade. They’ll perform again at night just before the day’s grand finale—the Gasparilla “Piratechnic” Extravaganza Fireworks show—which will be launched just off Bayshore Boulevard. The ideal spot to watch the fireworks from is near Show Center at Howard and Bayshore, as this is where you’ll best hear the music to which the fireworks are timed. You won’t be allowed to park in the neighborhoods around the parade route, but there’s plenty of parking available in lots and garages around town that charge a one-time fee. A shuttle will operate continuously from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., picking up at Fort Brooke Garage at the corner of Franklin and Whiting Streets and dropping off at Bayshore Boulevard and the Crosstown Expressway. Adults pay $10 to ride the shuttle; children accompanied by an adult ride free. You can come early and snag a spot for your blankets and picnic on the grassy median, or you can reserve seats. These are $40 in advance (plus tax) for bleacher seats; $50 for reserved chair seats; and $135 for adults and $85 for children for private seating and a catered lunch. All these are available on a first come, first served basis, and prices will go up on the day of the event. A LONGSTANDING PIRATICAL TRADITION By Shamus Warren

his month, Tampa once again falls under the black flag of José Gaspar and his motley band of marauders. Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla has been a huge part of my family for generations, and every year the anticipation leading up to the Gasparilla festivities makes me feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. Some of my earliest memories are of sitting along Bayshore in my mom or grandmother’s lap waiting for my dad to come along the parade route with his pirate brethren. Back then, there was only one Krewe, and shell casings and coins were about the only things thrown to the crowd. My, how times have changed! My father has been a huge influence in my life. He always told me that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. After nearly 20 years in the financial services industry (with my father as my mentor and business partner), I eventually found a calling in the non-profit world. For the past 2½ years I have served as the Director of Development for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, headquartered here in Tampa. The mission of the NPCF is to fund research focusing on less-toxic, more targeted treatment, therapies and cures for children with cancer. With two young children of my own, the cause and mission of the Foundation hit close to home quickly. The importance of funding research for pediatric cancer is incredibly vital, and the efforts of our team inspire me to the point where I go home every evening feeling better than when I arrived in the morning – and hug my wife and children a little tighter. This new career has reinforced within me how important family is, and how fortunate the Warren family has been to have the common bond of piracy to bind us together. My grandfather was a Royal Page, a member of the Royal Court, the Captain and King. My father was also a Page, Courtier, Lieutenant, Captain and King. My grandmother was a Queen. I

have been a Page, Courtier and Lieutenant. My brother is now a second-year pirate. My son will be a Royal Page this year too as he begins on his journey of piracy. One of the proudest moments of my life was when I was able to stand along the rail of the José Gasparilla II as a “buck” pirate with my dad 20 years ago. He has been in the Krewe for over 50 years, and I truly savor every moment and memory with him. The only thing that topped that memory for me was when my little brother Cody joined the Krewe last year and the three of us were able to sail into the heart of downtown Tampa together to demand the key to the city. I can’t wait to be able to include my son in that tradition as well. Over the years, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla has struggled at times to live up to José Gaspar’s reputation as a “Gentleman Pirate.” The Krewe has worked very hard to change this misconception. Since day one, we have always been about family, tradition and community. Among other things, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla has assisted the efforts of the Salvation Army for many years by adopting a Red Kettle site to raise funds for the needy. We visit kids in area hospitals to bring a little Gasparilla cheer to those who are unable to attend the parade. Our Community Foundation provides $40,000 in scholarships for high school seniors every year. The Krewe has also begun to work with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation to allow kids battling cancer to become a “pirate for a day” aboard the Jose Gasparilla II. Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla actually has a dedicated committee of pirates that operate year-round doing good things in the name of piracy. Gaspar’s Grenadiers, as they are known, took part in 46 events in 2018 in an effort to promote tourism and philanthropy in and around our great town. Yeah, it feels good to be a pirate. Everyone knows that pirates love maps, and as the signature event for the City of Tampa approaches yet again, I’d say Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla’s invasion and parade of pirates has put Tampa squarely under the “X” that marks the spot where you will find quite the treasure.

aking resolutions is a tradition for millions of Americans. However, while choosing a resolution can be easy, sticking to them is much harder. Changing behaviors is a tough task even for the most dedicated and motivated people. Remember any change takes time, and the type of resolution you make plays is a huge factor in your success. While there is no “right way” to keep a resolution, the YMCAs of Tampa Bay are encouraging community members to give their New Year’s resolutions a boost by considering these five suggestions.

Start small

Break big resolutions into small, achievable goals. “Getting healthy” is too broad. Reframe that big resolution into smaller, more manageable goals. Instead of cutting chocolate out of your diet for good, vow to only have it a few times a week.

one step at a time

Trying to change too many habits at once can easily lead to frustration. Instead of a New Year’s resolution, make a new month resolution. Focus on that one change for the month and add another (small) change when the new month rolls around.

you gotta have faith

Don’t get discouraged by setbacks. Even though you may experience some missteps, that doesn’t mean you have to give up. Bad habits aren’t created in a week, so you can’t change them in a week either.

keep an attitude

Think about what you’re gaining from a resolution rather than what you’re missing. This can make a resolution feel more positive, and therefore more achievable. For example, you may want to limit your screen time. That can be more manageable if you replace it with something positive like volunteering or family time.

talk it out

It’s easier to stick to your resolutions if you have a partner or friend working toward similar goals. Team up with someone to set your 2019 goals and help each other establish a game plan dedicated to achieving them. Set specific check-ins to help each other out of slumps and to cheer each other during the high points.

Many of you may want to join a gym to help keep your resolutions. It’s important to find a facility where you feel comfortable, but also keeps you motivated. Before committing to a membership, take a tour of your local YMCA. Your facility should not be just a gym, but an environment that offers more health, more hope and more opportunity. The Glazer Children’s Museum is bringing The Pigeon Comes to Tampa! A Mo Willems Exhibit, Jan. 19-May 12. This interactive traveling exhibit brings to life the beloved children’s books by author and illustrator Mo Willems. It is goofy and adorable, complete with a hotdog slinger, a Naked Mole Rat fashion show, Knuffle Bunny’s Laundromat, and even the Pigeon’s bus! There are tons of reasons you should visit this exhibit and still more reasons to love Mo Willems. Even as an adult, I laugh out loud reading the antics of best friends Elephant and Piggie. My kids love the Pigeon’s sense of adventure and silly sarcasm, and they giggle every time Wilbur the Naked Mole Rat gets dressed. But these books are more than just fun bedtime stories, they teach key skills for social and emotional wellness. The illustrations are simple yet full of expression that helps tell the story without causing distraction. Unlike typical narrative-style children’s books, these stories are told through the character’s dialogue and inner monologue. Without a narrator to explain the nuances of what’s happening, kids must interpret nonverbal cues like facial expressions and mannerisms to understand the characters’ actions and emotions. Can you imagine if everyone had these skills? Mo Willems is helping us raise emotionally intelligent kids who will hopefully grow up to create a more empathetic world.
