You Ready for NEW Adventures at LEGOLAND?

Pirate River Quest debuts Jan. 12!

Shiver me timbers! Pirates aren’t just taking over Tampa this month; your beloved LEGO® Pirates are heading to LEGOLAND® Florida Resort in Winter Haven to launch their very own ride! Officially opening Jan. 12, Pirate River Quest is a swashbuckling adventure through the historic Cypress Gardens that promises to delight landlubbers and old salts of all ages.

A NOD TO THE PAST

While Pirate River Quest is new, the boat rides in Cypress Gardens are actually a nod to the past. Many decades ago, an electric boat tour of Cypress Gardens was a mustdo at what was one of Florida’s very first theme parks. And the reimagination of this historic ride is one that has been a long time coming.

Time has taken a toll on the canals throughout the gardens, but it was always a part of LEGOLAND’s vision to restore and revive the waterways and bring back the boat rides that entertained generations of families—but with a LEGO twist, of course.

After a few years of hard work, and even a hurricane or two that resulted in a few delays (would it even be a pirate adventure without a hurricane?), the boat rides are back for a new generation to experience.

THE RIDE

Pirate River Quest is not a thrill ride, but it is one with a big adventure in store for you. As you board the boat, you will embark on a quest to help find Captain Redbeard’s lost treasure. And since all good treasure hunts are met with adventure and mishaps, you’ll encounter a mischievous troupe of monkeys and even a fearsome kraken as the story unfolds.

We love that this is a ride built with all ages in mind. It’s not scary and you won’t get wet. It’s also a trackless ride and driven by an experienced boat captain—in fact one of them is an original Cypress Gardens boat captain! Storylines may have changed, but when you embark on this voyage, you will retrace the journey generations of kids have taken upon these very same canals.

FAST FACTS ABOUT PIRATE RIVER QUEST:

• The ride’s entrance is next to Brickbeard’s Watersport Stunt Show in Pirates’ Cove and the Cypress Gardens entrance. The queue is shaded with fans.

• All ages are welcome to ride, and there is no height requirement.

• Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult, and all children under the age of six must wear a life vest. Life jackets will be provided.

• Each boat has a weight limit and can accommodate up to 12 passengers.

• The ride is just over 20 minutes long.

• If you’re planning to stay at the Pirate Island Hotel on property, be on the lookout for small nods to the hotel and even to the Brickbeard’s Watersports Stunt Show.

Those of us blessed to call the Sunshine State home know that there is absolutely no shortage of amazing places to stay with the kids in this state. After all, we live where the world comes to play! The LEGOLAND® Beach Retreat sits along Lake Dexter and features 83 beach-themed bungalows with 166 rooms. There is also a larger playground area and indoor LEGO build area in the main building where the restaurant is located. Gasparilla: a series of parades, a season, a way of life. Peering in from beyond Tampa Bay’s waters, the pirates, the beads and the cannons may seem unruly. But, Gasparilla is more than that. Dwelling among the Jose Gasparilla’s invasion, the children clamoring for beads and the skies aglow with fireworks, tradition—the true treasure—runs deep. On Jan. 28, Gasparilla, known for its colorful flotilla, takes over Tampa Bay. Trey Korhn, a member of the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla since 2005, shares some the treasured memories he’s made with wife, Jill, and their three children, Caroline (15), William (12) and Thomas (8). January in Tampa is high adventure.

TBPM: Why did you join Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla?

TK: Growing up in Tampa, I have so many fond memories of Gasparilla from my childhood. I remember riding on the back of my mother’s bike to the parade and sitting on the curb with excitement. Our family never missed it. As an adult, I realized the impact of those memories and I wanted to create the same with our children.

I was also drawn to the camaraderie with friends and the opportunity to meet new people. Businesswise, YMKG offers valuable networking opportunities as well. I’m thankful for the good group of people from varying aspects of the community YMKG has brought into our lives.

TK: YMKG and Gasparilla are a part of Tampa history. It’s woven into the city’s fabric. The Krewe also brings so many other positives to Tampa—extending beyond parade days. YMKG is iconic and, without it, parade season would lose some of the luster. We are the face of Gasparilla.

TBPM: How do you find the time to engage with the Krewe?

TK: The Krewe is great at incorporating families. The Children’s Parade, for example, is a signature family event. There are opportunities for Krewe members’ children to participate as members of the royal court and daughters to participate as debutantes.

William served as a page and had a blast sharing that with friends. He participated in the 2020 Coronation Ball and rode on the Royal Barge, with Mayor Jane Castor, for Gasparilla 2022. Thomas will be a page, too. I’ll let Caroline decide whether she wants to be a debutante, but I hope she does.

There are also philanthropic events families can participate in. When spouses and children are included, it’s more feasible to make something a part of your life.

TBPM: What do you appreciate about sharing the Children’s Parade experience with your kids?

TK: Just seeing their excitement—bonding with them. They love basking in the spotlight that day, and I love seeing how excited they are just throwing beads and riding the float.

It’s a day we share with friends, doing things like visiting the staging area to look at other floats. All the activity is fun for them, and that hasn’t waned as they’ve grown.

I especially love the fireworks that cap off the evening. It’s an intense show. Seeing our three gaze at it, not moving their eyes from the sky, is special.

TBPM: What’s your favorite krewe memory with your kids? What are you most looking forward to this year?

TK: The first time all three were old enough to participate in the Children’s Parade. There weren’t many years when Thomas was old enough and Caroline wasn’t too old. Sharing the day with all of them was a special time.

2023 marks William’s last year. Seeing Thomas grow, not needing as much help throwing beads, will also be fun.

TBPM: Do you visit schools to give out beads?

TK: I do, and I look forward to it. Not all kids get to attend the parade, and it’s a chance for them to experience part of Gasparilla season. It lets kids, who otherwise might not, have a chance to see the YMKG pirates up close.

TBPM: What part of Gasparilla season do you most enjoy?

TK: The Day parade remains my favorite. It’s such a production, and the amount of attention to detail and planning is incredible.

Going through the make-up tent early in the morning, with friends, is a fun part of the process.

From leaving Ballast Point Pier to riding on the Jose Gaspar across the bay, from the Invasion to seeing how much excitement it brings the crowds … it’s an amazing day. It is great to see the city come together and have a good time. It is a signature event for the City of Tampa.

Ahoy! It's Time for Gasparilla!

Pint-sized pirates rejoice: The Children’s Gasparilla celebration is on the horizon and there’s tons of fun to be had!

Celebrating its 76th year, the Ashley Children’s Gasparilla presented by Chick-Fil-A returns to Tampa Bay Jan. 21. Featuring the Bicycle Rodeo, Gasparilla Air Invasion, Preschoolers’ Stroll and the main event, the Children’s Gasparilla Parade leads the way for Gasparilla Pirate Fest, which takes place the following Saturday. Here’s the lineup so you can map out your day accordingly:

BICYCLE + PEDESTRIAN SAFETY RODEO, NOON TO 2 P.M.

During this free event, participants are fitted with free, brand-new bicycle helmets to keep (while supplies last). They can hop on one of the Rodeo’s bicycles and traverse through a mini traffic course that teaches bicycle and pedestrian safety.

GASPARILLA AIR INVASION, NOON TO 4 P.M.

The Gasparilla Air Invasion is back with its largest airshow yet! Watch civilian aerobatic teams, vintage military aircraft and The Chuters Parachute Demonstration Team wing their way through the sky.

GASPARILLA PRESCHOOLERS’ STROLL, 2-3 P.M.

Tampa Bay’s youngest pirates ages 5 and under can strut their stuff along Bayshore Boulevard in their specially decorated wagons, bicycles and strollers while donning their best pirate attire. The Stroll begins at Howard Avenue and ends at Rome Avenue.

CHILDREN’S GASPARILLA PARADE, 4-6:30 P.M.

Brush up on your bead-catching skills! The Children’s Gasparilla Parade is widely considered the largest children’s event in the country. Beginning at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard, pirates, floats, marching bands and more march north, ending at Edison Avenue. Be prepared for appearances by Tampa’s sports teams, mascots, favorite characters, and beads, beads and more beads.

GASPARILLA NIGHTTIME AIR INVASION, 6:30-7 P.M.

The airshow fun continues during twilight hours with dusk performances that include a precision parachute jump from The Chuters Parachute Demonstration Team and Ghostwriter Airshows’ signature fireworks flight.

PIRATECHNIC FINALE, 7-7:30 P.M.

Pirate + pyrotechnics = Piratechnics! This firework finale recreates the imaginary battle between the pirates of YMKG and the City of Tampa that began in 1904. This bold, colorful finale sets the scene for the energetic Gasparilla Pirate Fest that takes place the following Saturday, Jan. 28.

• The first parade of pirates was on horseback. The “pirates” from the newly formed Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla “invaded” the 1904 May Day parade as a way to liven it up.

• Gasparilla is based on the legend of a fictional Florida-based pirate named Jose Gaspar.

• Ye Mystic Krewe is still the sponsoring Krewe for the parade. There are now over 70 Krewes with ties to cultural heritage, historic events and local historic figures.

• Beads were introduced to the parade in 1986, inspired by New Orleans’ MardiGras parade.

• The throwing of coins represents the pirates sharing stolen treasure with the city.

• Gasparilla parades have featured children since the 1910s, though a formal Children’s Gasparilla Parade was not held until 1947.

Pro Tips to Help You Party Like a Pirate

The Children’s Gasparilla Parade is a fun, but long, day. If you have little ones in tow, make your day smoother and familiarize yourself with the parade route, parking options and road closures before the big day. Although the events are free to attend, you can pay for reserved seating for the parade at gasparillatreasures. com. Get there early; crowds pick up significantly close to parade time.

Here are our tips for what to bring:

• Sneakers or walking shoes, and strollers, wagons, bikes and scooters: Plan on a LOT of walking

• Blankets and chairs to “furnish” your parade-watching spot

• Portable games and/or activities to keep the kiddos busy; we all know kids and waiting don’t go together

• Coolers with drinks and snacks to stay hydrated and keep bellies full. Please note – the Children’s Gasparilla Parade is an alcohol-free event (alcoholic drinks are allowed the following weekend at Gasparilla Pirate Fest).

• Hand wipes, sunscreen and toilet paper for the porta-potty (just in case)

• An extra bag to store beads

Gasparilla Pirate Fest

Gasparilla Pirate Fest takes place Saturday, Jan. 28. While this event is open to all ages, it’s typically geared toward an adult crowd. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect:

GASPARILLA

INVASION, 11:30 A.M. TO 1 P.M. The only fully rigged pirate ship in the world, the Jose Gasparilla emerges at the south end of Hillsborough Bay and makes its way into Seddon Channel followed by the hundreds of boats of the Gasparilla Floatilla.

PARADE OF PIRATES, 2-6

P.M.

The Gasparilla Parade of Pirates boasts more than 103 elaborate floats, five marching bands, over 50 distinct Krewes and the infamous YMKG pirates.

It starts at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard and ends at Cass Street and Ashley Drive. The event is free, but reserved bleacher seating is available. Visit gasparillatreasures.com to learn more.

Decorate your hot dog or sausage with your favorite Jolly Roger flags as masts. You can cut an index card in half and use pirate stickers for the mast! Pierce the mast/flag with a toothpick and place the toothpick flag onto your hot dog or sausage. Top as usual and enjoy!

Treasure map pizza:

We made our own cheese pizza with store bought pizza dough. We created the map tracks using sliced olives. The ship is a quartered bell pepper with a triangle as the mast. The trees can be cut from a green bell pepper, or you can use parsley like we did. “X” marks the spot with two pieces of red bell pepper. Get as creative as you want to with this one!

This idea works well on a sheet cake if you’d rather have a treasure map dessert! Use fruit and chocolate in place of the veggies.

Transform your store bought or homemade cupcakes into pirate loot by topping it with a Jolly Roger cupcake topper! These are available on Amazon.

What you’ll need:

• Cake pop kit - lollipop sticks, treat bags and twist ties (available on Amazon)

• Marshmallows

• Candy melts (we used brown and pink)

• Food safe markers to draw eye patches and pirate faces onto your marshmallow.

Directions:

• Melt your candy melts as directed on the package and set aside.

• Secure the marshmallow onto a lollipop stick.

• Dip the top of your marshmallow into the candy melts and set aside.

• Once you have all your marshmallows dipped in the candy, place them in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes so the candy melts have set and hardened.

• Now it’s time to customize your pirates! With food safe markers, you can add draw on eye patches, beards and smiles.

“FLORISHING” FAMILY

Biting into the Jersey Girl pizza at Florish feels familiar, even though it’s my first time trying it. The crispy, chewy crust, the smooth, red sauce and the flavorful sausage crumbles remind me of New York-style pizza. “It has the same texture and flavor,” Florish owner Keith Sedita proudly says. He and his wife, Jill—both Northeastern transplants raised with Italian influences—set out to recreate the pizza they grew up eating. With one distinction—it’s vegan. Their plant-based lifestyle and their South Tampa restaurant were inspired by their sons

Why did you start Florish?

Jill: We started it as a family because we were just looking for delicious, plant-based food that we could all enjoy. Living in this area, we had a hard time as an active family finding restaurants where we could all find something that we enjoyed and that it would be quick and easy to pick up for lunch or dinner in a hurry. How did your sons, Demetri (19) and Ethan (16), inspire Florish?

Jill: Our sons undertook the plant-based lifestyle 100% before we did, so they kind of led the way. They became vegans before we did. I would say when they were pre-teen.

Why did they go vegan?

Jill: They were budding environmentalists (who created the conservation group, Green Gasparilla) and so they really did the research about the impact that the regular food system had on the environment and on the earth. And they also were concerned about animal welfare and their own health. I think kids nowadays are more conscious of what they put in their bodies and how it makes them feel and perform with athletics, so they really came to that on their own.

How did you decide on the menu?

Keith: We think that pizza and bowls are very approachable and familiar foods to vegans and non- vegans alike, and that’s why we chose pizzas and bowls to drive our menu.

Jill: We figured out along the way that as long as a food has texture that is craveable and is seasoned properly, it doesn’t matter what it’s made from. It’s a huge compliment when people come in and tell us, ‘If you didn’t tell me, I’d have no idea this is plant-based.’

How did you come up with the recipes?

Jill: We did a lot of testing in a test kitchen before we opened with mostly non-vegan taste-testers. And that’s how we knew we were onto something. Because we would make these different pizzas and people would be blown away, and it wasn’t even brought up that it was vegan. We just said, ‘We’re trying out these new pizza recipes and we’d like to get your feedback.’

What’s the verdict from the boys who inspired the restaurant?

Jill: They love it! Our oldest is in college now in New York and he’s craving Florish pizza. Even in New York, he can’t get pizza as good as he had here.

Kids to Know:

Lexline Johnson

Lexline Johnson isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. In fact, this 16-year-old student at Academy of the Holy Names taught herself coding over two years so she could ultimately develop an app in just two weeks. But that’s not it. This app, called “Quantum Entanglement,” is formatted much like an interactive textbook on quantum physics, and Lexline had to not only implement the program development she knows how to do, but also incorporate code for interactive animations to enhance the user experience - something she was less familiar with. Oh, and then this app just happens to win Apple's Swift Student Challenge, the most prestigious award for teens that only a small group of students from across the world earn each year. The award grants Lexline one year of the Apple developer membership which allows users to publish apps on the App Store, and the opportunity to meet other developers and receive feedback on designs. It goes without saying that this curious and tenacious coder and developer is a kid we should know.

TBPM: Please explain how you became interested in coding and why you wanted to learn about programming and app development.

LJ: Although technology has always fascinated me, my interest in programming sparked in my freshman year of high school during my first programming competition, which was Apple’s coding competition (Swift Student Challenge) in 2020. The competition challenged me to create my own app. While I had a very weak grasp on programming at the time, it was the realization of what I could create with my code that inspired me to pursue programming beyond the competition.

TBPM: From the time you knew you could create an app to learning that you won a global competition, what did that preparation look and feel like?

LJ: Learning programming took a lot of time, practice and projects. I spent much of my time outside of school reading articles and taking courses on programming. I think what helped me learn the most, though, was diving into my own projects and using Google and Stack Overflow to figure things out as I went.

Creating an app within two weeks for the competition was by no means an easy task, and I had to delegate time for planning, designing and then finally coding (and incorporating my graphics into my code, which was one of the hardest parts!). It took a lot of work and coding till late at night, but I’m happy with how it turned out. I think it was a great learning experience, and perhaps most importantly, it was a lot of fun! (There’s just something about staying up late with my friends when we’re all working on our projects for the same competition that really excites me!)

TBPM: What expectations did you have for yourself when you entered Apple’s Swift Student Challenge in 2022?

LJ: Going into the competition, my main goal was to just turn in something. However, as I worked on my app, I made a lot of progress and I was able to go beyond my initial expectations. At the end of the day, I'm proud of how my app turned out, and I’m honored to have been selected as a winner of the Swift Student Challenge.

TBPM: Tell us how winning this prestigious award has shaped your next creation, college selection or even a future career path.

LJ: Winning the Swift Student Challenge has been very inspirational for me. The award has inspired me to continue programming and creating apps to share with others. I’m excited for the future date when I can release my first app on the App Store!

TBPM: What you’ve accomplished to date has required an incredible amount of creativity, technical agility and grit. Where do you get this from? Who inspires these passions (which include quantum physics) in your life?

LJ: My sister, Lorraine, has been a huge inspiration for me. She always encourages me to follow my passions, even when they may seem impossible or out of reach. She reminds me that there’s always so much more I can do. She’s also always eager to be the first person to beta test my apps.

My interest in quantum physics was inspired by a lot of the documentaries I used to watch. When I was younger, I would sit with my sister, and together we would watch physics documentaries until late at night. From the Higgs field to quan-

tum entanglement, the documentaries always captured my interest and inspired me to learn more. Although quantum physics was obviously (but unfortunately) not covered in my physics courses, I was able to pursue my interest in my own time through online videos and articles (kudos to Kurzgesagt and Quanta Magazine).

TBPM: Your knowledge and skills are truly unique and extraordinary. How have you found a community of peers that share similar interests, and how have your Academy friends supported your journey?

LJ: I’m actually a part of some online communities that share interests in technology, programming, iOS development and other areas. Joining online communities has been an amazing opportunity for me to connect with other developers, get different perspectives on my own projects, and just really get to share and enjoy my experience with programming with others. My community has also been very supportive and inspires me to continue pursuing my passions.

In addition to my online friends, my friends and classmates at Academy have been very encouraging, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with other programmers and technology enthusiasts in my clubs. I’m currently in the robotics club at my school, and I find it fascinating to be able to work with so many other students who share my interest in technology.

TBPM: What’s next for you?

LJ: I’m very interested in machine learning and data science, so that’s the area I’m planning to pursue in college and beyond. I’m very excited to see where my future in technology takes me.

Dr. Amy Patenaude, ED.D., NCSP

A Child's Path

What could 2023 look like if we understood our children’s minds and behavior development to build a better 2024 and beyond? What if we approached the “tough” seasons of parenting differently—how would that bond with our children look? Amy Patenaude is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and licensed school psychologist in Tampa who helps families make lasting positive changes. A business owner, educator and change-maker, Patenaude is a family advocate we need, and a mom to know.

TBPM: As someone who has always worked with children in education and now as a school counselor with a private psychology practice, what led you to founding A Child’s Path?

AP: When I was younger, I often would play school with my brother and sister and loved nothing more than to be the teacher. As I grew up, I found myself interested in education and psychology and went on to study psychology [as] an undergraduate. After college, I ended up teaching for two years as a special education teacher and then as a kindergarten teacher in Hillsborough County. I've always been interested in parents and how I can provide proactive, preventative strategies that foster and safeguard the parent-child relationship. I officially started working in a private practice capacity in 2014, and it wasn’t until 2019 that I really started to see how I could grow and develop my business that would have a lasting, positive impact on the Tampa Bay community.

We were already in a state of crisis when it comes to children’s mental health in the community and in our country. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the need for mental health services for children. According to the CDC, one in five children has a mental health concern, and many of these children have lack of access to services and support. I think some of this stems from the fact that there are a limited number of mental health providers in the community who work specifically with children and parents. In addition to this, there is often a long wait time for many of the services that children and their families so desperately need.

When I founded A Child's Path, I was interested in taking my love of research-based practice and partnering with families and children to create change. In my practice, I offer three types of services: parent coaching, youth counseling and testing. I feel lucky because I have been able to see so many children who have flourished after going through counseling with me by learning how to manage their feelings of anxiousness and worry, parents who are confident in their parenting abilities after doing a few sessions of parent coaching, and children who receive appropriate educational services after an evaluation with me.

TBPM: It’s the beginning of a new year, which introduces opportunities for a refresh and even new resolutions. What are some ideas that parents can implement now to make 2023 an even better year at home?

AP: I’m going to share three of my favorite things to work on with families and would encourage you to pick one thing that you would like to do with your family in 2023.

First, develop your set of "house rules." You may decide on a core set of three to five rules that each family member agrees to abide by. Typically, it is helpful to phrase each rule in positive language and focus on behav-

iors that are observable. Here are a few examples of rules that I’ve seen families use: cell phones stay on silent at dinner; we use kind bodies, words and thoughts in our family; one person speaks at a time; iPads are used on the weekends only; we speak to each other in a calm voice.

Second, I love sitting down as a family and setting goals for the new year. Each member of the family comes up with a goal to accomplish for the year. This can be especially helpful for children who are in elementary school and older. For example, a child sets a goal to learn how to ride a bike. Once a goal is set, you want to help your child then reverse engineer the steps needed to accomplish it. For example: get a bike and a helmet, try riding with training wheels, take the training wheels off and practice.

A final activity that I like to do is have regular scheduled family meetings. Family meetings can occur weekly or bi-weekly. This can be an opportunity for parents to sit down and talk about what's going on, communicate the plans, problem-solve any family challenges, plan fun family activities, and discuss chores.

TBPM: You also work 1:1 with children. What are some things a mother or father can look for if they suspect their child is struggling and may benefit from working with you?

AP: Look for changes in your child's regular behavior: weight gain, changes in mood, changes in sleeping patterns, changing friends and a loss of interest in normal activities of enjoyment. Look for whether these changes or challenges are happening across different settings. For example, if the child is having a hard time at home, with friends and at school, this is a pretty good indication that your child, as well as your family, may benefit from working with a mental health provider. Third, it's important to look at the degree that the child's symptoms and behavior impact the child. For some children, they may appear anxious about an upcoming assignment for school. However, they study and do the best that they can on that assignment. In this instance, that feeling of anxiety is a good thing because it motivates the child to study and to prepare for the task at hand. However, if the child is anxious and is worrying about an assignment that results in not being able to sleep, having stomach aches, being focused on only the upcoming assignment and alters his or her mood, this may be a sign that the child may benefit from speaking to somebody. Most importantly, if your child makes a statement of wanting to hurt himself/herself or others, I think it is critical to reach out to a provider immediately, such as a family physician or the crisis center.

3 Ways Your Family Benefits When Giving Back

If you resolved to do more for your community in 2023, consider expanding your reach and making your kids part of your commitment. You’ll help others, to be sure, and you might discover your own family benefits as well.

and why. A short explanation might be enough for young children, while preteens are ready to hear more detailed information. Corbett Prep brought leaders of several nonprofit groups to speak to students about service in action during the eighth grade’s Leadership Week. They shared what they do along with statistics and stories about local needs that inspire their organization’s mission, which helped the teens broaden their perspectives.

Volunteering shows kids what they can do. The conversation about community service begins in prekindergarten at Corbett Prep when teachers ask the children how they could be of service to others. The students quickly come up with ideas: pick up toys, be kind to siblings, help friends who feel sad, take care of pets. They may be little, but they learn that they can make a difference in someone’s life.

Volunteering has a ripple effect. Children who participate in community service often stay involved as adults, setting a positive example for others. Youth volunteers who enjoyed their experiences with AmeriCorps, the service organization founded in 2010, told their friends about it, increasing the likelihood that they would also volunteer. They also stick with service when they grow up. Two-thirds of adult volunteers reported that they had volunteered when they were young, according to an earlier study.

Students at Corbett Prep begin the practice of volunteering early. Corbett Prep considers itself a private school with a public purpose, offering educational and enrichment opportunities for the greater community as well as coordinating occasions for students and families to raise money, collect goods or donate time or talents to area nonprofits.

Under the umbrella of “Corbett Cares,” the school is expanding its volunteer efforts this year to involve more of its PreK-8th grade population. In addition to benefiting a higher number of people in the community, the broader focus on service will make a difference among those who volunteer. What could families gain from volunteer time? We found three major benefits children and parents receive when they give back to others.

Volunteering teaches empathy and compassion. When kids accompany parents to shop

for a food drive or pick a gift for a needy child, they put themselves in someone else’s shoes to think about what they might want or enjoy. Corbett Prep’s social-emotional learning program, the Four Pillars of Wellbeing, establishes “community” as one of its core values and uses it as a springboard to talk about gratitude, support, friendship and collaboration. It encourages students to shift their mindsets from “what’s in it for me?” to “what do I have to offer?”

This change in perspective works for volunteers of all ages. Children might assume they are too young to contribute meaningfully, while adults may worry about fitting one more task into their busy schedules. When we focus instead on the special skills, interests and talents that help us make a difference, we are more creative, confident and productive. That allows us to concentrate on the bigger picture—who needs help and how we can provide it.

Volunteering provides educational opportunities. Community service becomes meaningful when helpers understand the purpose behind their involvement. You could have your kids carry canned goods to a food drive donation box, or you could first have a discussion about food insecurity, what it is, why it occurs and how to help. Parents can take kids to shop for items to contribute and encourage them to think about what would help someone

As students grow up, they take on more responsibilities. At Corbett Prep, fifth and eighth graders conduct in-depth research and service learning projects linked to the International Baccalaureate Programme. Eighth graders this year will draw from what they learned during their Leadership Week for their Community Project, identifying a need they can address with action: service, advocacy or research. In fifth grade, the students participate in the IB Exhibition and explore how to make positive differences in their lives and the lives of others.

All efforts, big and small, contribute to making the world a better place. It can be as simple as taking a garbage bag to collect litter on a beach day, visiting animals at a shelter or writing cards to someone who doesn’t feel well. Preteens and teens can take a more active role and organize fundraisers and informational campaigns to benefit causes close to them. Remember too, that kids are creative and eager to have their voices heard. Ask them their ideas for how they want to help.

Volunteering together strengthens family bonds, introduces new perspectives and increases happiness. Sharing the experience of giving as a family helps the lessons behind volunteering stick with children for years, and they learn that all ages can play important, active roles in their community and contribute to the greater good.

A New Year Welcomes a New Journey: Preparing your child for kindergarten

Happy New Year! Now that you’ve made it through the holidays, you might have a moment to think about New Year’s goals and resolutions. Here’s one to put on the list: preparing your child for their educational journey by readying them for kindergarten.

You may have a future doctor, artist, or teacher right before your own eyes, and you play a big role in your child’s educational journey. You are your child’s first teacher from the moment they are born. Every engaging interaction you have with your child, such as talking, reading, playing, and exposing them to new experiences such as the zoo or gym-

nastics, helps support their brain development. After all, 90% of a child’s brain is developed by age 5. That means by the time they enter kindergarten, they have formed all the brain connections they’ll ever have for interacting with others, solving problems and building life skills.

The Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Program is a great resource to help nourish your child’s growing mind as you think about your child’s milestones for 2023. According to the Division of Early Learning, in fall of 2021, non-participating VPK children were only 38% ready for kindergarten compared to

VPK participants that were 61% ready for kindergarten. Children that are kindergarten ready are more likely to graduate from high school, be healthier adults and earn higher incomes.

All Florida children who are 4 years old by Sept. 1 are eligible for the complimentary VPK program. Even better, you can pick which learning environment you prefer for your child, such as private school, public school, a child care center or a family child care home.

The Florida VPK program is a smart way to transition your 4-year-old into kindergarten

while you continue to be your child’s first teacher. For many children going straight from their home environment, kindergarten can be scary. VPK helps both caregiver and child adjust to the new educational journey. It allows your child to build their social skills, learn what it's like to be away from their caregiver, instill trust in a new adult, and learn how to interact with other children of the same age. It allows your child to form higher literacy and numerous skills and more importantly, learn new skills through play. Time spent is typically a few hours a day Monday through Friday, but hours differ by location.

The New Year is the perfect time to start researching a VPK program that works well for you and your child. The process can seem stressful and foreign, especially if this is your firstborn. Visit the VPK program you are interested in and bring your young learner to involve them in the new journey.

Once you have found a location that works well for everyone, you can apply for the VPK certificate by going to www.elchc.org and selecting ‘Apply For Free VPK’ from the drop-down menu on the homepage. Once you have applied, the VPK certificate will be sent to your email. You will then send the certificate to the VPK program of your choice.

Knowing your child is in a safe, supportive environment and growing their young mind allows you to go about your day being productive in your own life journey. The Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County has many great resources to help prepare children from birth to 5 years old for kindergarten with early learning programs, engaging activities to do with your child at home and free family community events. As you write your goals for 2023, don’t forget to add 'Preparing My Child For Kindergarten.'

Building a Love of Learning Through STEAM

After a 2-year COVID hiatus, St. Pete STEAMfest opens its gates for its popular annual event on Jan. 28 at Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg. On a Saturday in January, area families can enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities centered on the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM).

Shorecrest, a preschool-12th grade independent school in St. Pete, has sponsored and hosted the event since its inception in 2016. “STEAM subjects and projects are a part of what we do every day at Shorecrest,” says Dr. Anna Baralt, Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology and STEAMfest Committee Chair. “We launched STEAMfest as an outlet for sharing this kind of engaging, experiential learning with the greater community.”

The community has embraced STEAMfest, which draws families from all over the Tampa Bay Area as well as community partners from other educational organizations. STEAMfest 2020 welcomed exhibitions from Busch Gardens, Great Explorations, The James

Museum, Imagine Museum, The Wonder Studio and iD Tech Camps, to name a few. Children excitedly engaged in each learning activity, breaking only to get snacks from one of the food trucks on site.

An attendee from 2020 shared feedback with the organizers, saying, “Wow, what an incredible event! My children had such a great time exploring and playing. It got them really excited about learning these topics. The campus and setup were beautiful, too. Thank you so much for an amazing and FREE event!”

1,000 Books to a Love of Reading

One thousand books might sound like a scary number, but what if you think about it as 17 books a month? That’s only one book every other day or four a week at bedtime! With these odds, your family’s odds of succeeding at Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library’s 1,000 books before kindergarten program are dramatically higher.

Keeping track of 1,000 books may sound like an arduous task, but the library makes this doable for you with a super easy way of signing up and logging books. You can visit HCPLC. org/kids/1000-books and sign up for this free program; this lets you log books digitally and track your child’s progress. You can select any book you would like and can repeat the same book. The library will alert you to the different milestones you reach and help you celebrate them along the way.

Those few minutes spent reading each week can be worth a lifetime of improved early literacy skills. Reading to children between the ages of 0 to 5 instills a love of reading, reinforces family bonding and boosts academic performance and vocabulary.

The library recently honored one of our super readers at a small ceremony for accomplishing a massive

milestone of reading 3,566 books before kindergarten!

Liandromeda Sternemann is a determined young girl who loves books because they are filled with fun stories that teach her new things. She reads every day and enjoys going to the library to pick books. She wants to share her love of reading with other kids and wants them to love Pete the Cat as much as she does.

Liandromeda’s parents, Corinne and Dan, attribute the accomplishment to making reading a part of their lives by having books easily accessible all over their home: “We have books everywhere—living room table, mini library in the dining room, and two bookshelves in Lian’s room… not to mention the kitchen table and wherever else we decide to read that day. With this, we’ve integrated it into our daily routine: Read before, on the way to and from school, during homework or play breaks, in the car, at bedtime, traveling. We have made a weekly routine of stopping at the library and picking out books. If we have an event or activity coming up, we try to read about that topic ahead of time.”

Their advice to parents is to keep books at arm’s length, go to the library, incorporate variety, get on email lists that provide book recommendations and build reading into their routine. If you have no time to browse in person, browse online, place books on hold, transform timeout into relaxation and reading time, and most importantly, join the library’s 1,000 books before kindergarten challenge.

David, Raelani, Harper and Hudson Tichenor have been members of the Northwest Y for the last nine years, but their Y story started long before that

when David's parents met at a Sarasota YMCA in 1982! David and Raelani have been members at various Ys for the last 20 years.

The Y is a crucial part of the Tichenor family dynamic, shares Raelani. "It's hard to imagine life without the Y. "It's hard to think of a program we haven't participated in," Raelani says. "We love the feeling of community that comes with being members of the Y! Our families are not local to the Tampa Bay Area, so the Northwest Y is the family we choose! As a working mom of two active young children, waking up at 4:30 a.m. every morning to work out is not easy, but I'm motivated each day to see all my silver sneaker friends (a program for active older adults). The stories and wisdom they share inspire me to stay active, and I hope I'm able to be just as active as they are when I'm older! It warms my heart that they are equally as invested in my family and light up as they watch our children grow!"

In addition to Raelani's frequent exercise and Harper and Hudsons' involvement in the Y’s youth development programs, David works as a part-time wellness coach. He can often be found working the wellness floor providing facility and wellness orientations to new members and helping keep the fitness floor clean and organized.

As parents, David and Raelani are passionately committed to holistic health—mind, body and spirit. Liliana CHARGEs Forward During National Birth Defects Awareness Month

This January, parents like Katrina reflect on their journeys with their children who have birth defects.

For Katrina, it started with the birth of her firstborn child, Liliana. Katrina went over her due date.

“It was a very difficult labor,” Katrina recalls. Lily swallowed meconium, baby’s first bowel movement, in utero, so a neonatal intensive care unit nurse was nearby to swiftly suction her. Katrina had a shortened umbilical cord and her blood pressure dropped dramatically. She was hemorrhaging and taken straight to the operating room, nearly needing her uterus removed. Luckily, she recovered. Then came the news about Liliana.

“Lily’s anomalies were starting to add up,” Katrina explains.

She had a floppy ear, four heart defects, she failed her newborn hearing screening and had facial palsy (crooked smile). Liliana would need genetic testing. Katrina, who lives in Sarasota, quickly learned that they would be spending a lot of time at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida.

“Once we got home and had regular checkups with our pediatrician Patricia Blanco, M.D., we continued to get more referrals for her anomalies,” Katrina says.

Blanco discovered that Lily has CHARGE syndrome, a rare disorder, which affects multiple parts of the body. CHARGE is an acronym that stands for coloboma (structure of the eyes), heart defects, atresia choanae (also known as choanal atresia), growth retardation, genital abnormalities and ear abnormalities. It affects about 1 out of every 10,000 live births.

“It is very rare, but I’ve diagnosed a few others,” Blanco says. “Lily is the first I’ve taken from birth and step by step and seen her grow up.”

Children with CHARGE syndrome can have a range of diagnoses, but for Lily, her medical complexities are mainly gastrointestinal and brain-related. She also qualifies as dual impairment, being completely deaf and visually impaired. Lily is now 6 years old and to date has seen more than 35 different doctors, including 17 specialists. She has also received anesthesia more than 20 times for surgeries, including an emergency surgery, and various procedures.

“The amount of blood work, X-rays, infusions and Emergency Center visits is crazy. There’s so much going on, medically, physically, developmentally, on top of the multi-sensory impairments,” Katrina says.

Blanco says Lily is coming along nicely and attributes that to Katrina’s dedication as her mom.

“If you're around Lily for any period of time, you get to know her persistence. She's had to overcome so many things,” Blanco says. “Katrina is responsible for how far Lily has come, she's constantly on the floor playing, getting her to learn [and] communicate, and now Lily is starting to walk and communicate and make some of her wants and needs known.”

Katrina is proactive in educating herself about CHARGE, learning American Sign Language and attending conferences. Although there are many doctor appointments, therapy sessions and hospital visits ahead, Katrina is continually motivated by her baby girl, who will soon become a big sister.

“I just love her so much; she is everything to me. She can't communicate her needs, but she’s so strong and so happy. She's amazing and a super inspiration for me,” says Katrina.
