It’s going to be the best year ever in Tampa Bay!
2024 is going to be huge in Tampa Bay with NEW rides, attractions and experiences for families—and we are loving it! It seems like the big keyword this year is reimagination… and boy, are our local attractions about to deliver. So, let’s dive in, friends. Here’s what’s on schedule to debut this year:
NEW Thrills and Experiences at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay:
Stingray Shores: Opening this Month We are so excited about this new interactive habitat that offers a chance to touch and feed stingrays. A new Signature Encounter experience allows you to immerse yourself in their aquatic worlds to connect with the stingrays like never before.
Australia: Opening Spring 2024 The construction fences at Wallaroo are about to come down with the opening of this completely re-imagined family area, which will include a new safari-type ride, Aussie Trek presented by Outback. And since the splash pad was always such a popular attraction in this area, it’ll be back and bigger than ever before along with a new dry play area. After connecting with the wallabies at a new Signature Encounter, grab a snack from one of the new food and beverage options.
David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center expansion: As one of only two critical care centers in the United States able to care for orphaned manatees, ZooTampa is expanding its capacity with the addition of two 16,500-gallon treatment areas for the direst (and smallest) patients.

NEW RIDE: Phoenix Rising Coming this Spring This ALL-NEW family-roller coaster will be the park’s 10th coaster. More recent additions like Iron Gwazi and Serengeti Flyer went after the titles that ended in -est…as in the steepest and fastest hybrid coaster in the world (Iron Gwazi) and world’s tallest and fastest of its kind (Serengeti Flyer), but Phoenix Rising is vying for the title of family favorite! It’s going up in the Pantopia region and will be a suspended roller coaster, traveling at speeds up to 44 miles per hour throughout the 1,831foot journey over the Serengeti Plain. We love that the minimum height requirement is only 42 inches, which means most families will be able to ride together. Other cool features include on-board audio with a one-of-akind soundtrack. We can’t wait! If you want to be among the first to ride it, get your 2024 Annual Pass and experience “Phoenix Rising” before it opens to the public.
NEW SHOWS AND EXPERIENCES: If you’ve visited the park lately, you’ve seen the construction fences up at Kangaloom, which is being completely renovated so families can have an even more interactive experience with the animals. Two new shows also debut at Busch Gardens this year: Busch Gardens Animal Tales, a live animal presentation at Pantopia Theater, and a new ice-skating show.
NEW at Adventure Island: Castaway Falls Opening this spring Just in time for spring break, Adventure Island will unveil an all-new, multi-level water play attraction, Castaway Falls! It’s part of the water park’s biggest expansion in its 40-plusyear history. This family-friendly attraction will have more than 100 play elements, four water slides and three giant tipping buckets. As the New Year dawns, moms everywhere gear up for fresh starts and new beginnings. Amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, taking a moment to reflect on personal goals and aspirations can be a transformative experience. One powerful tool gaining popularity among moms is vision boards, and the upcoming season of The Motherhood Kit podcast kicks things off with a guided vision board episode full of the why and how-to in an effort to inspire moms on their journey towards intentional living.
What is a vision board? A vision board is more than just a collage of pretty pictures and quotes; it's a tangible representation of your dreams and aspirations. Moms often find themselves caught up in the whirlwind of family responsibilities, leaving little time for self-reflection. However, carving out time to create a vision board can be a game-changer, providing a visual roadmap for the year ahead.
Empowering Moms: Crafting Vision Boards for a Purposeful New Year by Yamel Belen
However, creating a vision board is only the first step. The real challenge lies in sticking to it throughout the year. At The Motherhood Kit podcast, we acknowledge this and provide practical tips and strategies during the first 2024 episode to ensure that the vision board becomes a dynamic tool for growth rather than a forgotten artifact. From regular check-ins to celebrating small victories, this episode equips moms with the tools needed to turn their vision boards into actionable plans. As we step into the New Year, moms in Tampa Bay are invited to embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment through the transformative practice of vision boarding. The Motherhood Kit podcast's
Why is creating a vision board important for moms? For starters, it allows moms to clarify their goals, whether they be personal, professional or a combination of both. The process of selecting images and words forces moms to articulate their desires and dreams, helping to bring a sense of clarity to their aspirations. Moreover, having a visual representation of these goals serves as a constant reminder, fostering a greater sense of accountability throughout the year.
How to create a Vision Board? Be intentional. One of the reasons why visionboarding can be so powerful is that it compels us to take a moment’s pause and to intentionally ask the question, “What do I want to see in my life?” Usually, we are so caught up in the day-to-day running of life that we forget to ask ourselves questions about what we want for the future and what brings us joy.
12 TampaBayParenting.com JANUARY 2024
guided workshop promises not only a creative and inspiring experience, but a roadmap for moms to navigate the year ahead with intention and purpose. So, grab your intentions, goals and vision for the new year, throw in a dash of inspiration and join the vision board revolution—because every mom deserves a year that reflects her dreams and ambitions.

COVER STORY
FELD ENTERTAINMENT: INSIDE THE FAMILY BUSINESS OF CREATING TREASURED MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME Laura Byrne
The Feld Entertainment® story is a tale of innovation and vision. Chapter 1 dates back to 1938 when Irvin Feld opened a drugstore in Washington D.C. Didn’t expect that one, did you? A surprising bestseller emerged: records. The spark in the world of entertainment was ignited. Irvin expanded his business into a chain of record stores and eventually became a record producer. But, his true game-changing moment came with his idea to host concerts in large public arenas, bringing iconic stars like Frank Sinatra and The Beatles to a much broader audience. This revolutionary idea not only changed the entertainment landscape but also paved the way for his next venture.
LIFE BECOMES A CIRCUS
In 1956, Irvin joined the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® circus as a manager and booking agent. Fast forward to 1967, when he and his brother purchased the circus, which was facing financial challenges. Irvin, who had already proven himself as an innovator, had yet another solution... move the circus from its traditional outdoor setting to large, indoor arenas. This strategic shift not only saved the circus from decline but also reinvented it into a thriving, profitable enterprise. And this was only the beginning of the Feld Entertainment story. A lot has happened since then, including:
2013:
Feld Entertainment Studios opens a nearly 600,000-squarefoot global headquarters in Palmetto.
1981:
Irvin’s son Kenneth Feld launches Walt Disney’s World on Ice (now known as Disney on Ice).

THE REIMAGINATION OF RINGLING
The Greatest Show on Earth took what we thought was the final bow in 2017 after entertaining families for 146 years. Audiences had changed and ticket sales declined. But, the Feld family’s quest to entertain had not.
“We all need to get out and have some fun!” Juliette says. “Whether you are at Ringling, Monster Jam, Disney on Ice or any of our shows, fans can trust that we will have a really high quality, high-value experience that gives you moments to connect as a family. It’s so hard to step out of the day-to-day grind, but our events provide those bonding moments when everyone in the family gets to enjoy together. It’s important to us that we make FAMILY shows, shows for everyone to enjoy with moments of humor, wonder, awe and athleticism that appeal to all ages. The Feld family’s passion has always been about bringing joy to families. It’s a passion that has become a thriving family business and a treasured tradition for millions of families around the world.” This Feld Entertainment story is still being written. We can’t wait to see what happens next.
ro
:F
Even though technology is changing the story of our generation, there is one thing it cannot replace—the connection we get when we experience something together. The Felds know this.
ce
“We looked at a balance of comedy, thrills and artistry in terms of the acts we brought into the show, making sure we had those elements that leave everyone feeling like they had a different favorite moment and making sure we had a balance too that would reach different generations,” Juliette says. “So, we’ve got a show that’s fun for kids, for parents and for grandparents. We are passionate and proud of this American icon and continuing to share it with generations to come.”
nI
What they’ve created is nothing short of spectacular. Set on a 360-degree stage, there is something to see from every vantage point, at every moment. And technology and video bring you in closer to the performers than ever before.

It’s Time Once Again for Children’s Gasparilla 2024! by Brie Gorecki
Celebrating its 77th year, the Ashley Children’s Gasparilla presented by Chick-Fil-A Tampa Bay returns to Tampa Bay Jan. 20, featuring a Bicycle Rodeo, Gasparilla Air Invasion, Preschooler’s Stroll, and the main event, the Children’s Gasparilla Parade. It leads the way for Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest, which takes place the following Saturday. Arrgh you ready? Before you go, here are a few things that you should know to make the most of your experience.
The first parade of pirates was on horseback with the “pirates” from the newly formed Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla “invading” the 1904 May Day parade as a way to liven it up.
2
Gasparilla is based on the legend of a fictional Florida-based pirate named Jose Gaspar.
3
The airshow fun continues during twilight hours. The performances will take place at dusk and will include a precision parachute jump from The Chuters Parachute Demonstration Team and Ghostwriter Airshows’ signature fireworks flight.
Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla is still the sponsoring Krewe for the parade. There are now over 70 Krewes with ties to cultural heritage, historic events and local historic figures.
4
Beads were introduced to the parade in 1986 and the idea was inspired by the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans.
PIRATECHNIC FINALE 7 P.M. TO 7:30 P.M.
5
Pirate + pyrotechnics = Piratechnics! This firework finale recreates the imaginary battle between the pirates of YMKG and the City of Tampa that began in 1904. This bold, colorful finale sets the scene for the energetic Gasparilla Pirate Fest that will take place the following Saturday, Jan. 27.
The throwing of coins represents the pirates sharing stolen treasure with the city.
6
Gasparilla parades have featured children since the 1910s, though a formal Children’s Gasparilla Parade was not held until 1947.
CHILDREN’S GASPARILLA PARADE 4 P.M. TO 6:15 P.M.
During this free event, participants will be fitted with a free, brand-new bicycle helmet to keep (while supplies last). They can then hop on one of the Rodeo’s bicycles and traverse through a mini traffic course that teaches bicycle and pedestrian safety.
Brush up on your bead-catching skills! The Children’s Gasparilla Parade is widely considered the largest children’s event in the country. Beginning at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard, pirates, floats, marching bands and more will march north, ending at Edison Avenue. Be prepared for appearances by Tampa’s sports teams, mascots, and favorite characters, and, let’s not forget beads, beads and more beads!

Wanna Party Like a Pirate? Check Out Our Pro Tips! The Children’s Gasparilla Parade is a fun, but long, day. Especially if you have little ones in tow, you’ll want to make sure to map out your day from beginning to end. Here are some of our tips to help you prepare for the parade and navigate the day. Look the part! Just because you’re not IN the parade doesn’t mean you can’t have fun sporting swashbuckling gear. Festive t-shirts, pirate costumes, hats and accessories are encouraged! We love local shops like South Tampa Trading Co., Gasparilla Treasures and Pirate Fashions. Because you’ll be doing a lot of walking, strollers and wagons will come in handy so you won’t have to carry kids around all day. Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes are also a good idea. Leave scooters and bicycles at home, as they are not permitted on Bayshore or within street closures on event day unless walked. The closer to the parade time, the more crowded it will get. Get there early to snatch up your perfect paradeviewing spot.
Join the Gasparilla Invasion Brunch at Tampa Convention Center for the best view of the historic invasion! Enjoy food and cocktails while watching the infamous pirates sailing up the Seddon Channel, firing their cannons from the Jose Gasparilla. Seating is limited. Visit gasparillapiratefest.com for tickets.
PIRATE FEST STAGE PERFORMANCES 10 A.M. TO 8 P.M. Dance along to live music presented by Bud Light and 101 N. Meridian. Enjoy stages with live entertainment before and after the parade at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and MacDill Park.
GASPARILLA INVASION 11:30 A.M. TO 1 P.M. The only fully rigged pirate ship in the world, the Jose Gasparilla, emerges at the south end of Hillsborough Bay followed by hundreds of boats as the Gasparilla Flotilla makes its way into Seddon Channel.
PARADE OF PIRATES 2 P.M. TO 5:30 P.M. The Gasparilla Parade of Pirates will boast over 140 participating groups that include more than 103 elaborate floats, five marching bands, over 50 distinct Krewes and the infamous YMKG pirates. The parade begins at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard and continues 4.5 miles to end at Cass Street and Ashley Drive. The event is free, but reserved seating is available. Visit gasparillapiratefest.com to learn more.
Bring blankets and chairs to set in your space to hang out in while you wait for the pirates to invade Bayshore. Portable games and/or activities to keep the kiddos busy can be helpful since we all know that kids and waiting don’t go together. Soft-sided coolers and lunch bags are welcome, so pack plenty of drinks and snacks to stay hydrated and keep bellies full. Please note – the Children’s Gasparilla Parade is an alcohol-free event (alcoholic drinks are allowed the following weekend at Gasparilla Pirate Fest). Have essentials on hand – hand wipes, sunscreen and toilet paper (just in case) since bathroom breaks will consist of porta-potty visits. Chances are, you’ll be catching lots and lots of beads. Bring an extra bag to put them all in because they can get heavy! Make sure to bring cash since some vendors don’t accept cards. Familiarize yourself with the parade route, parking options and road closures before the big day to make knowing where to go a little smoother.
The events are free to attend; however, reserved seating for the parade is available. Visit childrensgasparilla.com to learn more.

Gasparilla: Tampa Bay’s Historic Hallmark Parade by Tara Payor, Ph.D.
New York’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, New Orleans’ Mardi Gras and Pasadena’s Rose Parade: each uniquely fanciful. But sail in Tampa’s Gasparilla. There’s nothing like it, mateys.
TBPM: Core memories about your childhood Gasparillas? TG: As soon as I could walk, my parents began taking me to the parade. Gasparilla was neck and neck with Christmas morning. Until 1988, Gasparilla was celebrated on a Monday, and we got the day off from school. It was unparalleled excitement. Beads weren’t thrown then. Rather, pirates shot blanks into the air. Once they opened their guns and released casings to the ground, the real treasure was grabbing the hottest shell. TBPM: When did you join YMKG? Why? TG: It was the first thing I wanted to do when I finished law school and joined in 1999. Gasparilla embodies what makes Tampa such a great city, and I’m fascinated by how the story lives on. TBPM: What stands out to you about Gasparilla’s evolution? TG: Gasparilla’s original purpose was promoting the city of Tampa. City leadership wanted to entice more people to make Tampa home. Metrics abound about the economic impact Gasparilla has on Tampa Bay. As hectic as aspects of Gasparilla can be, it remains a distinctive part of what makes Tampa Tampa. Since 1904, Gasparilla has brought growth and excitement. Tampa Bay’s signature parade, steeped in over a century of tradition, invades Bayshore Boulevard later this month. Hosted annually by Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, Tampa’s merry pirates, Gasparilla occurs on the last Saturday of January—preceded by the Children’s Gasparilla Parade on the second to last Saturday of the month. YMKG’s captain, Truett Gardner, will lead the legendary invasion. Truett shares treasured Gasparilla memories, extending from his childhood to ones made with his children, along with what he’s looking forward to for the 2024 Gasparilla season.
TBPM: What are you most looking forward to in 2024? TG: Events involving Mayor Castor are a highlight. Being from Tampa, she appreciates Gasparilla’s history and is one of our biggest advocates. During a ceremony with the mayor, YMKG demands the Key to the City. When refused, we siege Tampa for a couple of days. I accepted the key last year, and I hope she surrenders it again. Once we sail to the convention center on invasion day, we return the key.
TBPM: Share some of your Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla family history. TG: My grandfather was in the Krewe and both my father and younger brother remain active in YMKG. My mom served on the court. As kids, my brothers and I were pages on the court— essentially serving at the pleasure of the King and Queen of Gasparilla. We resembled Lord Farquaad so thankfully costumes have evolved. This year, my son Tom (9) and my nephew will serve as pages. They’re absolute best friends and excited for their roles alongside mine as captain.

Truett and Leigh Gardner with their three children at the Children's Parade in 2015.
TBPM: What is Gasparilla day like for you? TG: It’s an all-day affair. As captain, invasion day comes with great responsibility. But, it’s a most fun work day. By 7 a.m., I’m undergoing utter transformation into a pirate. Our ship leaves Ballast Point around 11 a.m. and docks at the Tampa Convention Center at 1 p.m. Being on the Jose Gasparilla II, the world’s only fully rigged pirate ship, is my favorite. Gasparilla’s water invasion is the world’s largest, and last year’s flotilla boasted more than 1,000 boats. We quickly transition to our land parade along iconic Bayshore Boulevard and enjoy reveling in paradegoers’ excitement. Gasparilla always showcases Tampa’s beauty and waters—it’s typically a Chamber of Commerce commercial-worthy day. TBPM: Is there anything unique about your pirate garb? TG: As captain, I freshened up my costume—drawing inspiration from my childhood Gasparilla memories. I took parts of what I found special about my father’s and grandfather’s costumes when designing the new one. TBPM: Favorite Gasparilla memory with your kids? TG: Experiencing the joy of the children’s parade through their eyes. They’re wide-eyed being part of the massive, joyful crowd. Parade day’s camaraderie, coupled with Gasparilla’s spirited sights and sounds, amplifies their excitement. While our daughters, Frankie (17) and Cindy (15), have aged out of riding on the YMKG float, I treasure the memories we made and look forward to our son, Tom (9), riding alongside me this year. Parenting has taught my wife, Leigh, and I to view each age as a chapter, [with] each finite phase passing quickly. Enjoying fleeting moments with our kids is key. TBPM: How do you find the time to engage with the Krewe? TG: When asked to serve, I thought deeply about the time commitment. When you care about and want to do something, you make the time. With support from my family, I’m able to accomplish what I need to professionally while participating in personal commitments and community engagement. This is my final year serving as captain. I was honored by the selection and remain proud to serve. TBPM: Is there an aspect of YMKG’s community service you’re especially proud of? TG: When George Steinbrenner was King of Gasparilla (1997), he established the YMKG Scholarship Foundation—focused on funding a college education for local underprivileged high school students. We receive hundreds of applications, and serving on the selection
committee has been an honor. We’re determined to help students who, based on a combination of academic achievement, leadership positions and extra-curricular accomplishments, would otherwise not have opportunities to attend college due to financial circumstances. The students I’ve met through the interview process, with their remarkable perseverance, give me great hope for their generation. A recent recipient, despite having ALS, played soccer and ran cross country. He’d fall, but he’d get up and finish competing. Another was accepted to MIT but chose the University of Florida because of their cutting-edge AI offerings. We’re intent on supporting their college journeys and aim to see them return to Tampa where they can use their talents to help our city continue flourishing. I’m proud of YMKG for carrying on Steinbrenner’s initial work, which has grown into the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla Community Fund.

A Taste of Gasparilla: TampaInspired Snacks and Treats by Jenny P of @lunchboxmafia
Ahoy mateys! Whether you’re hosting a Gasparilla party or making your little one’s lunch festive, here’s some inspiration you’ll love.
Arrghh-some Party Snack Idea:
Shipwreck Empanadas: I made these one year that we celebrated both Gasparilla and The Super Bowl. They’ve been a big deal ever since. You’ll love these! See recipe notes below.
Our Sword skewers are perennial favorites. You can make them sweet or savory, and they’re so fun. (Toothpicks are safe for toddlers 2 years and up.) Find these sword toothpicks on Amazon.
gasparilla brownies:
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED 10 store-bought empanada discs Canola oil to fry or Avocado oil spray to air-fry
FOR THE FILLING 2 cups of cooked chicken, diced 1 cup of cooked bacon, chopped 1 cup of sharp cheddar cheese 1/4 cup of sliced green onion 1/2 block of cream cheese (room temperature)
DIRECTIONS
RECIPE NOTES: Empanada discs can be found in the international foods freezer section at Publix. I used the 5-inch discs and the filling-to-empanada ratio was perfect. Thaw them on your counter for a couple of hours. Pro tip: Use precooked rotisserie chicken to save time! There’s no need to add salt either. There’s plenty of flavor here.
1. Thaw your empanada discs. 2. Combine all ingredients for the filling. 3. Add 2-3 tablespoons of filling to each empanada disc.
TO AIRFRY
4. Fold over and crimp edges with a fork to seal.
1. Spray your empanadas. 2. Airfry at 350 degrees for 5 minutes.
5. Fry until golden brown.
3. Flip, spray and air-fry another 5 minutes.
Add chocolate chips to your box brownies and bake them in my favorite skull pan from Nordicware (linked on my Instagram page).
We hope you have a fun and memorable (and delicious!) Gasparilla season! JANUARY 2024 TampaBayParenting.com 21

TAM PA BAY ' S D R E AM COU PLE by Maggie Rodriguez, co-host of Daytime on WFLA News Channel 8
Long before Mika and Brian Kleinschmidt were hosts of the popular HGTV series “100 Day Dream Home,” they were classmates at Riverview High School. Now married for eight years, living in their own dream home in Ruskin, and raising Mika’s 14-year-old daughter, Jade, together, they’re reflecting on their journey and looking ahead to an exciting new year. TBPM: Happy New Year! What are you most looking forward to in 2024? Brian: The unexpected. We are both always ready for the next adventure. Mika: We’re working on a lot of different projects that are taking us outside of our comfort zone, so I’m excited to highlight some different things we have going on with the show. I’m also excited to really dive into Jade’s high school years and just appreciate the few years we have left with her being at the house, which makes me so sad. TBPM: Take us back to your days at Riverview High. How did you feel about each other back then? Mika: We had a few classes together. We definitely were friends, but nothing more than that. He was always the jokester, super popular. Brian: I dated Mika in high school. She, however, did not date me (laughs). I used to anchor the school morning show and I remember singing Happy Birthday to Mika and gifting her a Backstreet Boys t-shirt, which she still has to this day. Mika: I think that everything in life is timing. The seed was planted for sure, but we did not flourish into being a couple until ten years after high school. TBPM: How did you reconnect after all those years? Brian: As fate would have it, she accidentally sent me one of those chain emails, and of course I responded immediately. Mika: He responded, and he was like, “Hey if this was an accident, that’s okay, but how the heck have you been doing?” And so we just caught up. He invited me to go to a Bucs game. TBPM: So that was your first date? Mika: I didn’t consider it a date because we hadn’t seen each other in 10 years since high school but looking back on it now and with Brian’s intentions, it was definitely a date. Brian: Perfect date planned. Cold December game. Snuggling under a blanket. Then I feel a tap on my shoulder. It was my aunt and uncle sitting directly behind us! Noooooooo. What are the chances with 70,000 fans?

MIKA & BRIAN’S OWN DREAM HOME Describe the décor in your home. Brian: Coastal and Functional with a capital
FUN!
Mika: We have a lake view from almost every room, so it made sense to have that water element inspire our design.
What’s your favorite design feature in your home? Mika: I think that when you walk in the front door, the view and the openness is my favorite part of the house. Brian: The wall of sliding glass doors that open
completely to see the beautiful views of our pool and lake. Mika, what does your dream sanctuary have in it?
TBPM: It took a while, but Brian finally got the girl. Mika- What made you certain he’s the one you want to spend forever with? Mika: I think it took me going through some relationships that did not work out to really figure out what I wanted and what I didn’t want, and he just really brought out the best side of me and that is super important. At the time we started dating, Jade was 18 months old, so it was crucial that I find someone that is going to accept, not only me, but my daughter and put her first, and Brian has done that since day one. TBPM: Brian, what’s most important to you in your role as Jade’s “bonus dad”? Brian: I know she may never look like me on the outside, but I hope that she's taking some of my characteristics and morals on the inside. TBPM: What’s your favorite family tradition? Brian: Singing "Goodnight, Sweetheart" to Jade before bed. TBPM: What do you like about raising Jade here in Tampa Bay? Mika: There’s so much to do. We love being outdoors. We love being on the water. I love the fact that there’s just a great diversity of activities to do as a family, like taking walks on the Riverwalk, watching Jade rowing, nature walks, going to the beach. TBPM: Where do you see yourselves when you’re “old and gray”? Brian: We just bought a townhome in Savannah that we are renovating as part of Season 5, and I can see us growing old there together and enjoying the slower pace of life.
Mika: It’s a place of solitude where I can have peace and quiet. Especially in our line of work where you’re on all the time, you’re talking all the time, sometimes it’s really nice just to have that Zen moment.
Brian, what should every man cave have in it? Brian: Pool table, bar and piano. We've got all
those boxes checked.
What design trends are timeless? Mika: Anything organic. Mother nature has been around much longer than we have, so wood finishes, natural slate, stone, all those elements that you see outdoors. Brian: Ceiling beams and beautiful
landscaping.
Any design don’ts for families with children? Mika: Sometimes people pick finishes that are beautiful but that won’t last over time, so just be smart about high-trafficked areas—what you’re going to use the space for—and do your research on maintenance and durability. Brian: White walls, white grout, white carpet—
anything white because it won't stay that way.
Mika: Even though the physical body might age, I don’t think that Brian and I will ever stop just being youthful at heart. We love adventure. We love to laugh. We don’t take life too seriously and I think that’s going to be, hopefully, the key to growing very old together. JANUARY 2024 TampaBayParenting.com 25
Moms to Know Lauren Suttell LJ Aesthetics
TBPM: Can you tell us about your journey to becoming an APRN-C and what motivated you to pursue this career? LS: I knew from a young age that I wanted to do something that would directly impact and help others. My mom was a nurse, and she was my initial inspiration by the way she cared and showed compassion for others and in the ways she would express her love to me and my brother and sister. She was a caregiver at heart, always putting those she loved before herself. My father was a prosthodontist (cosmetic dentist) in St. Petersburg for over 30 years and practiced independently the entire time. It wasn’t until I began my own medical practice that I realized his impact. Early in my nursing career, I would have never imagined I would one day have a practice of my own. Unfortunately, my siblings and I suffered the loss of both of our parents in the last 8 years, each of them passing away 9 months apart from one another. It was by far the hardest time of my life, but I know that they are always with me and continue to inspire me as both a business owner and a nurse. TBPM: You have created a space for women to feel beautiful and confident. How is your personal philosophy reflected in your treatment approach and the services you offer? LS: I begin all my visits with asking my patients what they love about themselves. Doing this opens the door to establishing a different level of relationship and often bleeds into discussing other areas of their lives that they may be struggling with. People get so wrapped up in what “appears” to be beautiful, and everyone has a different definition of what they think is beautiful. As a preteen/teen I suffered with obesity. I attended a school where I was bullied by fellow classmates as well as teachers (as sad as it is to say), and I remember feeling like I would never be “beautiful.” As one would fear, I did develop an eating disorder at the age of 14 and continued (discreetly) for about 10 years afterwards. For the longest time, I attributed my continual thinning hair to this. However, it was ultimately determined that I have androgenetic alopecia (a genetic predisposition for hair loss). Now, let’s talk about

Have you ever heard the saying “in a world full of Kardashians, be an Audrey (Hepburn)?” When it comes to raising girls in today’s world, I am reassured that there are women in the aesthetics field that promote a graceful approach to aging that enhances natural inner and outer beauty—much like the iconic faces before this time. Yet, it’s nearly impossible to navigate this field if you haven’t first discovered a love for what makes you beautiful too. Here, meet a local mother that has navigated this journey from every angle and every feminine feature.

a beauty complex! For me, my hair had always been a “safety blanket.” I could always add extensions to make it “seem” as though I had more hair than I really did. I thought I was doing everything as safely as possible with hair extensions by taking periodic breaks here and there; however, after having my son, the hair loss I suffered on the crown of my head was so drastic I could no longer conceal hair extensions. This was the most insecure I think I have ever felt even beyond when I was younger and overweight and being bullied. A dear friend of mine I had been seeing for hair extensions suggested I consider alternative hair options. The idea of wearing a wig was outrageous; however, she gave me the confidence and lit the fire in me to start researching this possibility. Through much research, I stumbled upon an amazing group of women who I now consider sisters in our struggle with hair loss. One day, we decided to establish an annual retreat where we come together and meet in real life. We started this in April of 2022, and it continues to grow each year. It is amazing to see the effect you can have on someone if you allow yourself to be vulnerable to your insecurities. It's as if you give them inspiration to do the same, and if everyone does this, it creates a pay it forward effect for the next person who may not feel as though they can overcome this insecurity. I cannot begin to express how much I have grown with confidence just by being vulnerable with my hair loss. So now when I see patients in my office who may make a comment on how great my hair looks that day or open up to me about another insecurity they may be struggling with, I talk to them about my alopecia. They are shocked to even hear that I wear a wig. Many people say, “If you are so confident, why wear a wig in the first place?” My answer to them is that because wearing hair makes me feel good about myself, and you should do things in life that make you feel good about yourself. I have not gone out in public with my shaved head just yet, but it is something I am truly working towards. As I say amongst my hair loss community, “Vulnerability breeds confidence,” and there's nothing more beautiful than being able to live beautifully confident in your own skin just as you are and embrace your own individual beauty. TBPM: How has becoming a boy mom influenced your perspective on the work you do? LS: I want to teach my son that even though the world is obsessed with the exterior appearance, the beauty of each of us comes from within and is the most beautiful feature of an individual.

Kids to Know:
BAYSHORE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL FOURTH G R ADE
by Julie Tingley, founder of @weemacree
Every fall at Bayshore Christian School, the fourth grade classes gather to plan for a market. The products, packaging and prices are determined individually by each 9 and 10-year-old student. However, they decide collectively how the profits from the project will be used. While they learned how to execute a successful business, they also discussed populations in need around the country that they could support. How they came to the decision to support kids in our Tampa Bay community and build a relationship with a local nonprofit organization is everything that is right in the world today.
TBPM: What is the 4th grade market? Emery Johnson: The fourth grade sells fun items to other kids in the school, and the money goes to charity. The items have to be made by us. Nick Marchetti: Fourth graders make a bunch of stuff for younger and older kids to buy. We price the items from $1-$5. We sell out of items by the end of two days. Then, we donate to a charity that we have chosen. TBPM: What do you do leading up to the market event? Ella Tingley: First, we chose and created items that were different from each other. Then, we learned about pricing, packaging and promoting the products so we could make the most money. In the third week, we talked about different causes and charities. Our class chose to focus only on needs in Tampa, and we agreed who the money from the market would support. TBPM: How did the fourth grade choose to help children over any other group that may need help (animals, environment, adults)? Olivia Dzierbun: Our class thought about a lot of ways to help, but helping kids in our own city felt special. Through the Heart Gallery, we had the chance to make a real difference in the lives of kids, especially those without families. Shifrah Ebenezer: We had a class vote and we all decided to help kids together. I feel like if I were a kid that needed it, I would want the help too. I have a friend who was fostered, so I understand how important it is to help.
TBPM: Describe what happens at the market.
TBPM: How much did you make to donate?
Gabriella Reyes: We have a store set up in the fourth grade classrooms. All of the kids at Bayshore Christian School get to shop the market. They give money for things they like. I had 36 bookmarks to sell!
Stella Cruz: Over $2,000! We raised this much money because a lot of kids came into the market and liked our stuff and we sold out very quickly. I didn’t think we would raise that much money!
TBPM: How did you choose the charity that you wanted to support with the fourth grade market funds?
Daniel McNamara: I was very surprised we earned so much when everything was priced so low. I hope the money will help the kids find homes and get some stuff for Christmas.
Zoe Fruehauf: We all voted. I knew about foster kids because my mom volunteers all over the community, and she tells me who she helps. She is the one that told me about kids without parents, so I shared that with everyone. TBPM: What about the Heart Gallery was something you felt was important to support? Luke Sullivan: I liked that this was a group where you could see who you help because they show pictures of kids looking for their forever families. Liam Dunfey: The kids we saw in the video were confident in their hope to find a family. Tyler Lynch: The part about experiencing Christmas and their birthdays…these kids need to have those special experiences too. Juliette Gallina: That we are helping kids that don’t have families. I just can’t imagine my Mommy and Daddy not being here today, or being taken away from my house and put into a new one over and over again.
TBPM: What did you learn from this experience? Amaris Gonzalez: That not everyone has a family. And some kids don’t want a lot, they just want a family. It made me feel good to help the Heart Gallery kids. Harper Odom: That some kids don’t get as many things as other kids do, but if we try to help, they could have a better life. And if we help them, they are more likely to grow up to help other people too! TBPM: How has this class project for the Heart Gallery made you feel about all the good you can do as a fourth grader in Tampa Bay? Whinnie St. Clair: I feel like I can change the world by helping others in need. If we can do this with our fourth grade class project, imagine what we can do with more people helping! Lucas Cooper: I learned that—at any age— you can start a business to raise money to help my community. I felt good knowing I can do good at the age I am. JANUARY 2024 TampaBayParenting.com 29
Celebrating our Education Rock Stars by Laura Cross
Have you seen the commercial where employees keep calling each other rock stars, and then actual rock stars show up and shut them down?! Well, we challenge Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol or Joan Jett to step in one of our schools and shut US down – because our employees are as close to rock stars as you can get! In fact, that’s the theme of this year’s Excellence in Education awards: “Let’s Band Together – Celebrating our Education Rock Stars.” And if all our employees are rock stars, the Excellence in Education Finalists are Hall of Famers. The Excellence in Education awards ceremony is hosted by Hillsborough Education Foundation, and that’s where our Teacher of the Year, Instructional Support Employee of the Year and Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year are chosen.
Let’s meet the finalists for each category: 2024 Teacher of the Year Finalists: Barbara Zimmer is a second grade teacher at Bay Crest Elementary School. Milca Lebron is a 5th grade math teacher at Woodbridge Elementary School. Kimberly Feroli is a reading teacher and a teacher talent developer at Gaither High School. Clayton Nylund is a physics and engineering instructor at Blake High School. Jaime Beulah is an Access Points teacher for kindergarten through second grade at Corr Elementary School.

SUPERINTENDENT VAN AYRES
As an experienced educator with Hillsborough County Public Schools, Superintendent Ayres has dedicated his life to serving the children in our community. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1992 and receiving his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Tampa, Superintendent Ayres started his career as a science teacher at Blake High School in 1997. He was later promoted to Assistant Principal at Blake High School. In 2012, he returned to his alma mater, Jefferson High School, as Principal. Three years later, he was promoted to Deputy Superintendent where he spearheaded the work to improve the district’s graduation rate – which increased 12.2 percentage points over a five-year period. He also served as Chief of Strategic Planning where he built strong community relationships. His unwavering commitment to student success and building a strong organizational culture made him the School Board’s unanimous choice to become Superintendent.

PRESENTED BY CORBETT PREP
Building a Bridge to Middle School by Courtney Cairns Pastor
It’s elective day in fifth grade, and the Forensic Science class is seated in Corbett Prep’s Middle School lab with mysterious red vials and tiny plastic trays for a lesson on blood type analysis. The synthetic blood will react differently depending on the blood type when mixed with an antiserum, so the fifth graders carefully drop the substances into the trays and log whether it curdles or remains smooth. The students are unsure at first what they’re seeing and what it means. And then as the reaction occurs, they excitedly call out their observations and invite their friends to come take a look. The class, one of several electives fifth-grade students can take with middle school teachers, is filled with engaging activities and interesting lessons. But it also serves a bigger role, making middle school less mysterious and more inviting, as the preteens gain familiarity with the building’s classrooms, teachers and routines. Until this year, fifth grade marked the last year of Corbett Prep’s elementary program before the students crossed the street to middle school. But last spring, Corbett Prep administrators saw an opportunity for change. After studying the research and talking to other schools, they decided to bring fifth grade into the middle school this fall. It would become a bridge year—a little elementary, a little middle. “It feels so natural,” says Middle School Principal Jennifer Jagdmann.
The change makes sense developmentally. Early adolescence starts around age 10 or 11, approximately fifth grade, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. As young adolescents, fifth graders begin to go through cognitive and physical changes that are more similar to older classmates than students in the younger elementary school grades. A good middle school knows how to address those developmental changes, the Association for Middle Level Education reports, and can design educational programs that meet those unique needs of this age group. Establishing Corbett Prep’s fifth grade as a transitional year built a safer learning environment for these young adolescents. The fifth graders now have access to socialemotional resources better aligned with their needs along with the expertise of the middle school staff. The bridge concept also allowed Corbett Prep to elevate the fifth-grade experience. Fifth-grade teachers work closely with middle school subject teams to develop a curriculum progression beneficial to all middle school students. Higher-level classes are available to fifth graders as well, including more science periods and an earlier start to Spanish as an academic class that could help some students earn Spanish 2 high school credit in eighth grade. A flex period introduces them to the middle school’s executive functioning and study skills curriculum.
Some aspects of fifth grade have stayed the same, however. The students still participate in specials classes, such as physical education, Application Lab and drama/dance. They can also join the fourth- and fifth-grade chorus, which produces a spring musical annually. And they are called upon to act as leaders of the elementary school, helping in the car line in the morning and acting as buddies with PreK. Fifth graders also have their own protected space, a suite with a separate entrance from the older students. The same fifth-grade teaching team covers most of their classes. The students greeted the changes with excitement, and teacher Mary Youngblood says she and her colleagues appreciate being part of the middle school team. “I feel like we belong,” she says. But the best benefit will come next year, when the current fifth-grade class enters sixth grade. The students will have enough familiarity with the building’s layout and teacher expectations that it should lower any stress about middle school. Teachers hope their bridge period will pay off in a smooth transition, and the new sixth graders will enter the school year ready for increased responsibilities and possibilities.

Fire Drill
How to prep your family to prevent and escape home fires by Anu Varma Panchal
As we welcome 2024, many of us are filled with exciting new resolutions: To eat healthy, to save money, to exercise. BayCare Kids Wellness and Safety Specialist Michelle Sterling has one other resolution that each one of us can make. The good news is that it’s quick, inexpensive, and can potentially save your life: to change the batteries in your fire alarms. “It’s an easy way to remember to change them out—new year, new batteries,” Sterling says. And while it might sound like nothing more than a tedious housekeeping task, this action can prevent severe injury and death. Every day, one child dies from injuries sustained in a home fire. Every hour, 14 kids are injured by fire. And of all the fire-related deaths that occur, 90% are caused by home fires.
As well as changing batteries every six months, testing smoke alarms every month and replacing alarms every 10 years, other measures to ensure fire safety can include these:
HOME FIRE DRILLS
If your house catches on fire, the average time you have to escape is just two minutes. The best way to ensure that your family is ready for this scenario is to do a fire drill at home, something your kids are probably already used to doing at school. • Draw a fire escape plan and make sure each member of the family studies it. • At least twice a year, do a run-through with your family to ensure that you are able to get out of the house safely within two minutes. Practice the scenario both in the daytime and at night. • Revise the plan to account for new family members and pets, and for change in ages. • Designate a family member who will be in charge of infants and small children. Designate someone to be in charge of the family pet(s).
In the kitchen, keep flammable items such as dish towels, wooden spoons or recipe books away from open flames. Keep little hands away from the stovetop, and make sure kiddos can’t reach and turn stove knobs.
• Older children should be taught to “get low and go.” This means they should stay close to the ground and exit. Teach them how to remove screens and open windows.
Even in Florida, January can be a chilly month, and it’s tempting to cozy up in front of a crackling fireplace. Be sure to burn only dry, seasoned wood in your fireplace, and use a grate or fence in front of the flames.
• Keep doors closed against a fire. If you can stay in a different room with the door closed and call for help from there, you can prevent the fire from spreading into that room and also deprive the fire of oxygen that will feed it from your room.
New Year’s Eve often means fireworks, and while that’s fun, it’s important to keep matches, lighters, fireworks and any other flammable items out of children’s reach. If you’re lighting a candle, do so at least 12 inches away from something that can burn. If you’re traveling, unplug small appliances before you leave. Even if you’re home, unplug toasters, toaster ovens, slow cookers, Instant Pots and other devices when you’re not using them.
• Choose a safe place to meet outside the house in case you are forced to escape through different windows and doors. Ideally, it will be a sidewalk in front of your house. Avoid a spot that involves crossing a street if small children are involved. Nobody wants to be the victim of a house fire. But if the worst should happen, good preparation and practice can prevent the loss of irreplaceable human lives.
Fire Escape Plan Following the instructions, draw your escape plan on the grid. ❏ Draw the layout of your home as best as you can, include: • Doorways • Windows (if they can be used as exits) • Fire escapes (if in an apartment) ❏ Draw two floor plans if your house is 2 stories. ❏ Label each room. ❏ Draw a circle where there are smoke alarms.
Draw your fire escape plan on grid paper like this and post it on a place where you will see it such as a refrigerator or bulletin board.
❏ Draw two ways out of each room. ❏ Write “Exit” on each way out of the home. ❏ Draw an “X” for a safe meeting place outside. ❏ Practice escaping from every room in your home! Example
