Roy Paz, local police officer and speed skating coach, with his daughters Anna (left) and Samantha (right).

As a father and coach, I trust St. Joseph's Children's Hospital

for the best emergency care. When my daughters suffered serious injuries while speed skating, I made sure they were both treated at the Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Center at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. The nurses and doctors were confident and reassuring, putting my family at ease. Thanks to them, both girls will be skating circles around me for years to come. For that, I’m very grateful.

FROM THE EDITOR

School’s out forever. OK¸ it’s only out until August. But for parents who must now take kids from one camp program to the next¸ spend their days as an entertainment director or worry about all the idle time their teenager now has, the summer break can seem like an eternity.

David E. Estevez Executive Assistant Kimberley Brown Smith Associate Editor

If your children are anything like mine, they want to do something every single day. So, what’s a mom or dad to do? Don’t worry. We’ve filled this issue with information to help you make it through the daze of summer. Check out page 8 for some fantastic ideas on things to do that will take you right up until the day school begins. Plus, we’ve compiled some of the latest and greatest games and gadgets on page 46. There’s even a few things that mom and dad will enjoy.

If you have a few days off, a road trip could be in order. Florida’s a beautiful state and we’ve got some beautiful and educational locales you should consider visiting on page 22. With the Gulf oil disaster affecting tourism throughout the state, spending some of our money at home surely can help.

Susan Margolis Marketing Director Todd A. Varde Sales Director

And while you’re enjoying the myriad activities Florida locales have to offer, remember to stay vigilant about water safety. It should be a top priority because drowning tragedies often are preventable.

So, let the countdown to August begin.

ongratulations. You survive d June and as a mother of thre e, I know that’s a feat.

I envision the summer as day s filled with sweet, lovable mo ments, where we can all sleep in, eat a peacefu l breakfast, enjoy a nice car ride somewhere, anywhere and fill the calendar with nothin g but fun.

Then, I wake up to find a child’s face about three inches from mine. And don’t bother trying to stay perfectly still, because they know you’re awake and they’re not going back to sleep.

IMAX films and rides for a yea r PLUS get reduced or free admission to other locations across the area. The savings really add up. A family of five can get a premium pass for $199. www.m osi.org

While making breakfast, you hea r, “I don’t want to eat that.” The car ride brings those dreaded words, “She hit me.” or “I have to pee.” And they’ve already said “Mom” enough times to warrant a countd own to the first day of school. So, what’s a mom to do? Plan, plan and plan. Kids love to know what the com ing days are bringing. So, make a calendar and put it on the fridge for everyone to see. Don’t worry. We’ve got plenty of ideas to help you fill it.

Tips from the Trenches

Motherhood is never free of stress, but here are a few tips that may help eliminate som of the unnecessary problems e we encounter. Keep your expectations low . Sometimes as moms, we plan these days the way we them to happen. If you hav want e to cut the day short, remem ber there will always be ano trip to the zoo. ther Keep the specific details to yourself. If you get your chi ld so excited about the pet zoo and your day is cut sho ting rt by rain, getting everyone back to the car just became more difficult. On the flip even side, if the petting zoo is what your kids are most exc about, do it first. That way ited you don’t miss it. Be flexible. If the weather is working against you, sw itch park day with craft day don’t be afraid to move act . Also, ivities due to lack of sleep or a bad mood. A long day a theme park with a child at who went to bed late can make the day very stressful everyone. for

If you have a child or childr en that want to go skating, but one child is too small or doesn’t like to go, make arr just angements with grandma or a neighbor. It’s always great child to have that one on on for a e time. Try to find the joy in every day. My kids are older now and some of the most vib memories are of events tha rant t were perceived as ruined in the moment.

This underwater archaeological preserve features a submerged shipwreck, where visitors can dive and snorkel. Part of a Spanish flotilla, the San Pedro was a 287-ton, Dutch-built ship which sank in a hurricane on July 13, 1733. Her remains were discovered in 1960 and after major salvage efforts in the 1960s, all that remains of San Pedro is a pile of ballast stones, covering a 90-by-30 foot area. The underwater site has been enhanced with seven replica cannons, an anchor and an information plaque. Visitors also can view marine life. For information, visit www.flheritage.com/archaeology/underwater or call 850-245-6444.

Fernandina Plaza/Old Town Fernandina, Fernandina Beach

Sebastian Inlet State Park and McLarty Treasure Museum, Melbourne Beach

In 1715, 11 Spanish treasure galleons sank along the east central Florida coast. One of the survivors’ campsites was on the present day site of the McLarty Treasure Museum. Seven hundred people lost their lives in the disaster. Also within the state park is the Sebastian Fishing Museum, which tells the history of the area’s fishing industry. Enjoy fishing, swimming, scuba diving, canoeing, kayaking and snorkeling on three miles of beaches in the Indian River Lagoon. Call 321-984-4852 or visit www.floridastateparks.org for details.

Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine

Old Town Fernandina was platted by the Spanish in 1811, and was the last town in the Western Hemisphere to be platted by the “Laws of the Indies,” developed by the Spanish government regarding settlement and town planning in the Americas. The original grid – encompassing some 26 blocks – remains to this day, although some has been lost to erosion by the Amelia River and other factors. Plaza Fernandina, now a state park, was included in the original plat and occupies a full block of green space overlooking the Amelia River. For details, visit www.oldtownfernandina. org or call 904-277-7274.

Administered by the National Park Service, the National Historic Landmark Castillo de San Marcos National Monument represents the oldest remaining European fortification in the continental United States. The masonry fort and its surrounding land comprise 25 acres in historic downtown St. Augustine. To learn more, visit www.nps.gov/casa/index.htm or call 904-829-6506, Ext. 227.

St. Pete Beach

“Hip, affordable, and resolutely casual,” according to Travel + Leisure, St. Pete Beach’s Postcard Inn is on prime beachfront, minutes from downtown St. Petersburg and a short drive from Tampa. From decor to dining this hotel is the Gulf Coast’s great American escape. Each room is a uniquely accented throwback to a time when road trips ruled and surfers were kings. Modernized with Wi-Fi and flat screen TVs, every room is just footsteps from the warm sand and refreshing Gulf Coast water. Critically acclaimed Wildwood BBQ & Burger as well as PCI Beach Bar and PCI Snack Shack, serving barbecue, burgers and ice-cold beers all day long, are must-haves. Be sure to sample the baby back ribs, advises the New York Times. www.postcardinn.com

Fort Mosé Historic State Park, St. Augustine

Hidden away in the marshes of St. Augustine is one of the most important sites in American history: the first free community of ex-slaves, founded in 1738 and called Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose or Fort Mosé. More than a century before the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves from the British colonies were able to follow the original Underground Railroad, which headed south to the Spanish colony of Florida. There they were given freedom, if they declared their allegiance to the king of Spain and joined the catholic church. Call 904-823-2232 or visit www.floridastateparks.org to learn more.

nature deficit disorder

By Peter A. Gorski M.D., M.P.A.

We all benefit when kids are attuned to the world around them

“Our children are the first generation to be raised without meaningful contact with the natural world,” warns Richard Louv in his 2006 book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. Sure they play on ball fields, skate through streets and run around manicured parks. However, relatively few children spend time aimlessly lying in the grass watching clouds pass overhead, wander free and safely out of sight of home or town, observe and collect tiny creatures (remember lightning bugs?), breathe in the aroma of fresh air, listen for sounds in the dark or learn the social behavior of wildlife. Why should parents care about such changes in the experience children have with nature? An increasing body of science and public concern claims that we had better reverse this trend if we are to endow our children with necessary skills to promote community health, guide the course of civilization and safeguard the future of life on earth. It’s amazing to learn how much natural exploration builds a child’s intellectual abilities, can prevent or treat attention deficits and can promote the development of personal responsibility, independence and relationship skills.

Fishing Tips for Parents from Matthew Louv (age 12) 1. Fish with your kid. 2. Let your kids go fishing, even if you don’t want to take them. 3. Let your kids buy supplies and tackle. That’s half the fun of fishing. 4. If your kids are young, take them to a place where fish are easy to catch and are small. 5. Let kids fish as long as they want. Let them get obsessed. 6. Let the kids go off and do their own thing. It can get to be incredibly annoying and/or frustrating if there’s an adult standing over them barking orders. 7. At least pretend to act excited when your kid catches a fish. It can quickly ruin a day of fishing if the kid feels you don’t want to be there, and he’s just dragging you down. 8. If you know how to fish, don’t give your kid too much unsolicited advice, although it can be helpful if the kid is young.

9. Let your kid teach you how to fish; participate in the fishing. This can be quality bonding time. 10. Remember that fishing and spending time with family is just as, or more important than, homework. 11. Have fun; that’s the entire point of going fishing in the first place. 12. And whatever you do, don’t let your kid throw rocks in the water. Bottom line, early and enduring intimacy with nature may lay the developmental base for children to become more caring people, better scientists, moral politicians, community servants and devoted friends. For all of us who raise or advise children and families, who care about the social health of communities and who recognize that time is short and responsibility for the well-being of children is both personal and shared, it’s time to head outdoors for some quality time. Introduce a child to the magical mysteries and eternal truths of the nature that produces and sustains life, the nature we must safeguard. You couldn’t do our kids and their future a greater favor.

Louv, a parent and journalist, develops the case for concern on behalf of children’s mental, physical and spiritual health and highlights practices that hold great promise, from schools that use nature as the anchor for learning all the academic subjects to ideas each of us can do when we are spending time with a child. The author’s own young son contributes one of the most endearing pieces of advice for adults.

Don’t let a drowning

tragedy strike your family

diligent mother momentarily switches her attention to the phone while her toddler silently slips under the water in the bathtub. A normally attentive father is cooking in the kitchen while his young child sinks lifelessly to the bottom of the swimming pool. A loving grandmother is distracted by the needs of one grandchild while another wanders off into a neighbor’s pool.

than any other state in the nation. For every child who drowns, four more are hospitalized for near-drowning.

A

It’s something most parents think could never happen to their family, but according to Safe Kids USA, every year in the United States nearly 830 children drown. In Florida, drowning rates for children younger than 5 are more than double the national average and are higher

“Drowning hits every socio-economic group, every race,” says Bevin Maynard, an advocate at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. “Parents shouldn’t think because they are well educated or live in a nice house that it can’t happen to them.” Maynard notes that myths like these can give parents a false sense of safety.

Myth 1: Drowning is noisy

The truth is, drowning victims typically don’t scream and thrash when in distress -- they often just slip away in silence. Children can drown in seconds, and most drownings happen when a child is left unattended or during a brief lapse in supervision.

Myth 2: I don’t have a pool or live near the water, so my child is safe The truth is there are water hazards in and around

every home. “Although most drownings and near-drownings occur in residential swimming pools and in open water sites, children can drown in as little as one inch of water and are therefore at risk of drowning in wading pools, bathtubs, buckets, diaper pails, toilets, spas and hot tubs,” Maynard cautions.

Myth 3: My child is never outside without me, so I don’t need a pool fence “Many parents of children who have drowned were shocked to discover that their toddler found a way out of the house,” Maynard says. “In some cases, an older sibling left a door open, in others, children who were thought to still be napping were instead discovered in the pool.” The truth is, curious children, especially those younger than 4, easily find ways out of the home and fall into pools, hot tubs and ponds. Often they are discovered too late to save.

Myth 4: My child can’t drown because he’s wearing a floatation device The truth is personal floatation devices aren’t approved for safety and won’t protect a child from drowning.

SWIMMING & SUN

FIREWORKS & FUN

To most families, summertime means fireworks – cookouts – swimming – and a whole lot of fun! Unfortunately, the season also brings dangers to children in and around the water. No matter how much adult fun you’re having, always remember to keep your child within reach when they’re in the water. More importantly, NEVER leave your child alone near water, not even with a sibling! It only takes seconds for a child to slip in a pool unnoticed and drown. So remember, this holiday and throughout the summer: • Check the pool first if your child is missing! • Never use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. • Always have telephone and rescue equipment near the pool. For more information and tips on water safety, call 813-229-2884…Because Every Child is a Dream Worth Growing.

Never leave young children unattended in bathtubs or in the care of an older child. Immediately drain the tub once the bath is over. Keep toilet lids closed and use toilet seat locks. Keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed. Empty buckets, containers and wading pools after use. Store them upside-down and out of children’s reach. Install four-sided isolation fencing, at least 5 feet high, and equipped with self-closing, self-latching gates. Fencing should completely surround swimming pools and prevent direct access from a house or yard. Use door and pool alarms and pool covers for an extra layer of protection. Cover and lock hot tubs when not in use. Actively supervise when children are playing in or near water. Designate a “water watcher” to maintain constant watch over children in the pool during gatherings.

You're going to have something to celebrate!

Entertaining Tampa Bay and beyond with...

Balloon Entertainment

Teach children to never go near or in water without an adult present. Remove floats and toys from in and around the pool when not in use. The presence of these toys may encourage children to enter the pool area or lean over the pool and fall in. Keep rescue equipment, a telephone and emergency numbers poolside. Learn CPR. “Performing CPR on drowning victims immediately – before paramedics arrive – may prevent brain damage and be the difference between life and death,” Maynard says. Never rely on air-filled or foam devices such as water wings, arm floaties, plastic rings, rafts, noodles, etc. to protect a child.

Princess Parties Face Painting

Children should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device when on a boat, near open bodies of water or when participating in water sports.

Glitter Tattoos

Enroll children in swimming lessons taught by qualified instructors when they are ready. Even then, do not assume your child is drown-proof -- he still needs constant supervision.

simply sexy

S

ummer is here and that means strappy sandals, flirty dresses and brightlycolored toenails, but in Florida, that also means heat and humidity that hit you like a ton of bricks. This is no time to be pulling out the hot tools for your hair. It’s time to try simple, trendy looks that will get you looking summer sexy without the hassle.

Summer hairstyles that will turn heads

............................... BY Roy Naccour

The Messy Bun

So simple, yet, so chic. Start with a low ponytail, loosely twist the tail into a bun and secure with bobby pins. Gently pull some of the hair for a looser, slightly messy look. If you want to add some flair, throw in some fashionable chop sticks or keep it out of your face with a headband. Embellished headbands are in style, so choose one with rhinestones, flowers or metallic elements.

Surfer Chic Waves

This sexy, natural, undone look is everywhere. Start with dry hair and lightly spray it with Redken Layer Lift 07 or a similar product. Part the hair on the side or middle. Twist or braid each section into two or more buns, depending on how much hair you have, and secure with bobby pins high on the head. Let them dry while getting ready, doing housework, taking care of the kids or sleeping in for a firmer set. Undo the buns, tip your head down and tousle with a smoothing serum, such as Redken Glass, to add shine and tame fly-aways.

Low Ponytails or Braids

Yes, these looks are perfect for grown-ups, too. A two ponytail look works well for short or long hair. Start by parting your hair down the middle and secure each ponytail with small elastic bands. You may want to spray the hair with a light hold spray such as Redken Workforce 09 to help hold shorter pieces together. Then, finger tease the ends for a voluminous look. For braids, hair must be below the shoulders. Secure a low ponytail to one side or two low ones on each side. Braid your hair halfway or all the way down and secure with an elastic band. Loosen the braid, gently pulling on each section of the braid. These looks also can be worn with a headband for a fun hassle-free look. A great hairstyle is a good start to looking summer sexy, but don’t let your hair have all the fun. Paint your toes an electric pink, navy or turquoise blue or a classic French for a more subdued look. Get an airbrushed tan for that great bronzed glow, but without the damage to your skin. Let loose, relax and have fun this summer. Roy Naccour is owner and head stylist at J Joseph Salon and Spa in Land O’Lakes.

Extraordinary woman

.....................................

BY ANGELA ARDOLINO

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.

A trailblazer from a young age, Fort Lauderdale native Jeanne Trudeau Tate has been driven to succeed. As the oldest of four children, she’s used to taking the lead, becoming the first person in her family to graduate from college and becoming the first female partner at Shackleford, Farrior Stallings and Evans law firm. Eleven years ago, Tate opened her own law firm, giving a voice to children looking for a forever family. The firm has participated in the placement of almost 2,000 children in loving and caring homes. But she didn’t stop there. She also runs a domestic adoption agency, Heart of Adoptions, and a nonprofit international arm, Heart of Adoptions Alliance Inc. While uniting families across the state, Tate also has built her own on Davis Islands with her loving husband and their five children. It’s not easy balancing a career and family, but Tate has managed to make it look simple.

What do you think your secret to success is?

On a macro level, to find peace and joy in your personal and professional life, and feel immense contentment with who you are and what you represent. On a business level, I reflect on the corporate philosophy of my firm, which can be summed up in two words: exceed expectations. By having an unyielding dedication to the highest standards of practice, competence and ethics and striving day-to-day to uphold this philosophy, our firm honors and promotes the unwavering ideals, hopes and dreams of the families we serve and that brings us success in turn.

What goals do you have for your futureTampa’s future?

My to-do list is so long, and there is no hope that it will ever be completed. I have a never ending zest for life, for challenges and to help the less fortunate. On a community level, I hope and pray that all children in foster care will find permanent, stable, lifelong homes and I advocate extensively toward this objective.

What advice would you give to other women?

Cherish your friends and family, enjoy life, make time daily for yourself, even if it’s just

five minutes, don’t sweat the small stuff and limit your focus on the destination and enjoy the journey. In a work environment, it is a pleasure to consider my employees as part of a large family, and to have an open door policy that promotes discussion about business, family, and other matters. I believe in a sense of belonging, knowing that someone has your back and that my circle of family and friends are trusted and valuable human beings, whose life and world matter.

Favorite restaurant to take your kids to? Pappas Ranch in Odessa.

Biggest inspiration or role model?

Dr. Sylvia Campbell (and she probably doesn’t know this, so shame on me) who epitomizes my favorite saying by Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we make. We make a life by what we give.”

What makes you happy?

Without exception, on a personal level, my proudest moments relate to the birth and accomplishments of my children, who are all striving to be productive members of our community.

I derive joy from a myriad of things, from the scent of a rose from my garden to the excited way my dog greets me when I come home from work. I greatly enjoy life when viewed from a child’s lens and take tremendous umbrage in providing adoptive homes to a special needs or hard to place child.

What is your biggest achievement?

How do you relax/take time for you?

What is your proudest moment?

It is very difficult to hone in on my biggest achievement. I am extraordinarily proud to have been honored by The Congressional Coalition on Adoption as an Angel in Adoption, by the Tampa Chamber of Commerce as the Small Business Leader of the Year and by the Guardian Ad Litem program as the Guardian Angel of 2009.

How do you balance motherhood and work?

Delegate, reduce sleep needs, multitask, expect major contributions from spouse and children, set boundaries, have high expectations for yourself and others and ask whether the issue will matter in a year.

Favorite thing about living and working in Tampa?

Tampa is a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family. We have abundant social, cultural, educational and athletic opportunities to titillate the soul and occupy the mind.

Something you would like to do before you die? Travel more. Have grandkids.

I am not really good at this, but find that a change of pace is relaxing. I like to stay busy as opposed to watching TV. Sewing, skiing, gardening, undertaking mosaic or other projects, boating and being with family/friends are all relaxing for me.

What is something people don’t know about you? I ride a unicycle.

What message would you like to give to other women/community? Join organizations and get visible. Develop mentors. Treat your employees well and help them balance work and life issues. Don’t burn bridges.

What else would you like to share with our readers?

You need to be a passionate visionary and recognized expert in your field. With dedication, effort and ability, you can parlay your business into a first-class, state-of-the art entity.

Favorite thing to do with your kids in Tampa Bay?

Go boating in the beautiful waters off Davis Islands.

Bully Busters Program Earns National Recognition The Hillsborough County Criminal Justice Office’s Bully Busters public awareness initiative recently received national recognition. The National Association of County Information Officers (NACO) awarded the program a superior distinction for the campaign’s efforts to bring attention to the problem of bullying, by educating the public, encouraging others to report such behavior and promoting a zero-tolerance policy. Funded through grants and donations, including $50,000 recently contributed by the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office from its fines and forfeitures fund, Bully Busters is a joint effort with the county, the county’s criminal justice liaison, children’s services, the sheriff ’s office and Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay. “We work in conjunction with the schools’ antiChief Deputy Jose Docobo of the Hillsborough County bullying programs to provide a reporting line Sheriff’s Office presented Commissioner Rose Ferlita and public awareness and education outside with a $50,000 donation for the program. the classroom,” says Carol Michel, community relations coordinator for the Hillsborough County Criminal Justice Office. “Bullying also happens in so many other public places where kids congregate: the bus stop, neighborhood parks, malls. Bullying is in the news somewhere almost every day.” The Bully Busters program and the Anti-Bullying Advisory Committee were both created by Hillsborough County Commissioner Rose Ferlita in August after news broke of an alleged sexual assault at Walker Middle School. A Bully Busters Youth Council also emerged, consisting of members ages 8-17 from throughout Hillsborough County. Visit www.hillsboroughcounty.org/bullybusters to learn more about the program.

The Tutoring Center Coming to New Tampa Since 1994, The Tutoring Center franchise has been educating young students and addressing learning issues across the country. Now, former Hillsborough County teacher Stephen Heverly will open the Tampa Bay area’s first center at 6431 County Line Road in New Tampa. With nearly 20 years experience as a Tampa teacher and a former university professor at international schools, Heverly has a local and global perspective on education, citing universal learning difficulties that most often stem from lack of focus. “Today’s culture is so fast-paced and students expect a commercial every 10 or 15 minutes, so it’s not surprising that they have trouble concentrating and staying focused,” Heverly says. And he says The Tutoring Center has the tools to address this issue. The Tutoring Center employs an instructional method known as the rotational approach to learning. Developed by child psychologist and Edward S. Thalheimer, Ph.D., the program was originally designed to help students with Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder improve their focus. Thalheimer’s research indicated that the same approach could support all students’ efforts to raise their concentration level. Safety Harbor firefighter Holly Warkenthien and Mike Alstott join Andrew Hall and winter the dolphin at Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Earlier this May, Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the Mike Alstott Family Foundation recently partnered with Sun Coast Osteopathic Foundation and O2 Solutions to give injured Safety Harbor resident Andrew Hall one of the biggest surprises of his life. Hall showed up at the aquarium expecting to see his favorite dolphin, Winter, and instead discovered his football idol, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Mike Alstott. The fullback also surprised Hall and his family with news they would be receiving a handicap-accessible van. The 20-year-old was injured last year after a drunk driver struck him while he was standing on a sidewalk. Andrew lost his left leg and has been in a wheelchair. His family had been unable to afford a handicapaccessible vehicle. Safety Harbor firefighters, who helped save Hall’s life, raised $12,300 toward the van. The Mike Alstott Family Foundation, Sun Coast Osteopathic Foundation and O2 Solutions donated the rest of the money needed for the van, which costs about $35,000. Recently, Hall had joined TV host Montel Williams for a story featured on The Doctors. In the piece, Hall who also suffers from cerebral palsy was introduced to Winter, who has a prosthetic tail and the doctors at Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics who built the prosthetic device, and they informed Hall they would be developing and donating a prosthetic leg to him.

St. Pete Student Named 2010 Presidential Scholar Blaine Krauss of Gibbs Senior High in St. Petersburg was one of only four Florida students named to this year’s list of U.S. Presidential Scholars and the only student from the Tampa Bay area bestowed this prestigious distinction. Krauss is among 141 outstanding American high school seniors who demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and service at school and in their community. He and the other scholars recently were honored for their accomplishments in Washington. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars appointed by the president selected the scholars based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as community service, leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. For the past 46 years, the U.S. Presidential Scholar program has honored more than 6,000 of the nation’s top-performing students.

Camp Gan Israel Gears Up for Summer Camp Gan Israel of St. Petersburg is gearing up for its fourth annual summer camp session. This year’s program is scheduled to run July 26-August 13 with three age divisions: ages 5-9, the Pioneer division for kids 10-12 and the C.I.T. group for ages 13-15. Throughout the summer, participants will have an opportunity to take part in a variety of activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, multiple sports and a new feature added this year, Club Time. Twice a week, campers will have an opportunity to choose from a broad selection of clubs with instructors and activities available for each. Instructors will focus on individual camper’s needs to help each child develop confidence and self-esteem. “There’s a very special role model and mentoring relationship that develops, not deliberately but naturally between our counselors and the children,” says Rabbi Alter Korf, one of Camp Gan Israel’s directors. “They are not merely filling a position over the summer but are driven to bring meaning to the children’s lives.” Camp Gan Israel is designed to provide each child a meaningful Jewish summer experience and each day offers a different theme. Call 727-344-4900 or visit www.myjewishcamp.org to learn more.

Camp Gan Israel expects about 50 students to participate in this summer’s camp program.

Shops at Wiregrass Gives Back to Community Staff members from the Shops at Wiregrass recently traded in their computers and office supplies for shovels, gloves and paint brushes during Forest City Enterprise’s seventh annual Community Day. Forest City’s 1,000 associates nationwide participated. Staff from the Shops at Wiregrass volunteered at Helping Hands Pantry at Atonement Lutheran Church in Wesley Chapel. The food bank accepts donated food and household items that it distributes free of charge to needy families throughout Pasco County. In May, Helping Hands Pantry assisted 627 households and gave away 16,259 pounds of food. “It was a great day for a great cause that helps our local community and an opportunity to give a little something back locally,” says Deborah A. Detweiler, marketing director for the Shops at Wiregrass. Helping Hands Pantry opened in March 2009 when members of the Atonement Lutheran Church recognized a need in the community. What started as a few dozen people stopping by has now grown to as many as 180 people weekly. Besides visiting its food pantry, people can browse through clothes and other household items donated by church members, volunteers, local businesses and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. For information on Helping Hands, call 813-973-2211.

Ierna’s Recognized for Charitable Work Ierna’s Heating and Cooling recently was honored for its support at the sixth annual Remington Walls Benefit Golf Tournament at Lexington Oaks Golf Club in Wesley Chapel. The annual tournament raises funds for the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED). Ierna’s has participated in the event since its debut, the result of the fundraising efforts of Remington Walls, who suffers from Eosinophilic Disorder, an inflammatory condition causing the walls of the esophagus to become filled with white blood cells.

Remington Walls, right, and his family recently held their annual golf fundraiser at Lexington Oaks in Wesley Chapel.

Walls was diagnosed with the rare illness at age four and must consume a special diet of pineapple/orange flavored medicinal shakes eight times a day. Despite his condition, Remington has remained active in sports, art and academics and tirelessly works with his parents Mike and Stephanie Walls to raise both awareness and research funding for APFED, www.apfed.org, which seeks improved treatments and a cure. To date, the Walls family has been able to raise nearly $80,000, with all proceeds from fundraisers going to the organization.

At this year’s golf fundraiser, Mike Walls presented a plaque to Ron and Charlene Ierna, owners of Ierna’s Heating and Cooling, and thanked them for becoming one of the event’s top corporate sponsors since the tournament’s inception.
