Summer is an exciting time of year for families, when swimming, picnics and other adventures replace days at school or in the office. Unfortunately, it’s also the most dangerous time of year for kids — nearly half of all unintentional injuryrelated deaths among children occur from May to August. “Tragedies peak during summer break because children are supervised less, have more free time and engage in more outdoor activities,” said St. Joseph’s Children’s Advocate Keri-Rose Lanotte. Here are some safety tips to help protect your children from accidents.

Water Safety - Drowning can happen any time of year, but parents and caregiver be particularly vigilant dur s need to ing war mer months, when the num ber of drowning deaths am children increases 89 percen ong t compared to the rest of the year. Lanotte urges families to: • Never leave children alo ne in or near water. Parent s and caregivers should alw children are playing in or nea ays watch while r water, even in shallow wad ing pools. Children can dro little as one inch of water wn in as in a matter of seconds. • Never rely on a personal flotation device or swimm ing lessons to protect a chi and keep rescue equipment ld. Learn CPR , a telephone and emergenc y numbers poolside. • Install four-sided isolatio n fencing, at least 5 feet hig h and equipped with self-clo latching gates. Fencing sho sing, selfuld completely surround swi mming pools and prevent from a house or yard. direct access • Enroll children in swimm ing lessons taught by qualifie d instructors when they are after age 4. ready, usually • Make sure your child is actively supervised by an adu lt while visiting any house • Empty all buckets, contain with a pool. ers and wading pools imm ediately after use. • Children should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-ap proved personal flotation dev boat, when near open bod ice when on a ies of water or when partici pating in water sports. • Children ages 14 and you nger should never operate a personal watercraft.

Bike Sa

fety - Bicycling is a great way for children to stay active in the remember that bicycles are summer. it’s important to more than just a toy. They are associated with more chi than any consumerproduct ldhood injuries besides the automobile. To keep children safe, Lan otte recommends that parent s: • Make sure children wea r bike helmets every time the y ride. Enforcing a single rule helmet or don’t ride — can — wear a reduce the risk for head inju ry by as much as 85 percen • Don’t let children wear t. a helmet that fits poorly. • Make sure children stop and check for traffic before riding onto a street or throug • Teach children to ride wit h an intersection. h the traffic flow as far to the right as possible. • Don’t let children ride wit hout supervision until they’ve shown they can always foll • Explain the proper han ow the rules. d signals and make sure chi ldren use them. • Don’t negotiate. It’s esti mated that 75 percent of bic ycle-related deaths among have been prevented with children could bicycle helmets.

“Kids, especially 11- to 14-year-olds, might insist they’re good riders who don’t need helmets, complain that helmets are uncomfortable or point out that none of their friends wear them,” Lanotte says. “Resist the temptation to give in; requir ing your children to wear helmets every time, everywhere they go, is the best thing you can do to protec t them.” Chances are, children who ride bikes probably also enjoy skateboards, scooters or inline skates. Be sure that whenever they wheel around, they are wearin g the right gear.

Sun Safety - Did you know that a blistering sunburn before the age of 10 will double the likelihood of developing skin cancer later in life? Kids don’t have to be at the pool or beach to get too much sun. Their skin need protection from the sun’s harmful rays whenever they’re outdoors. To keep children sun-safe throughout the summer adhere to the American Cancer Society’s SUN safety guidelines. Shadow test. if the shadow is shorter than the child, the sun is at its strongest and most dangerous point. Ultraviolet sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greate r should always be used when a child is exposed to the sun. now! Protect children from the harmful effects of the sun now. Parents should also: • •

Use sunscreens and protective clothing together for the best protection. Reapply sunscreen throughout the day, especially after swimming. This applies to waterproof and water-resistant products as well. • Try to keep children out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun’s ultraviolet rays are the strongest. • Know the ways of the rays. It’s possible to get a sunburn on a cloudy day just as easily as on a sunny day and the sun’s rays can penetrate 3 feet of water.

Playground Safety - Few things are more exciting to a kid than a great playground and they can be a great place to grab some outdoor fun, fresh air and exercise. Playgrounds also can pose potential safety hazards. More than 200,000 children are treated in U.S. emergency departments for injuries that occur on playground equipment every year. To help keep your family’s trip to the playground fun • • • • • • •

and safe:

Look for playgrounds with shredded rubber, mulch, wood chips or sand. Grass, soil, asphalt and concrete are not good surfaces. Be sure to check for potential hazards, such as rusted or broken equipment and dangerous surfaces. Report hazards to the appropriate municipality. Keep children younger than 5 in a separate play area, away from equipment designed for bigger kids. Actively supervise kids on a playground. “Just being in the same area isn’t good enough – they need your undivided attention while playing on or around the equipment,” Lanotte adds. Teach children to use equipment properly — slide feet first, don’t climb outside guardrails and no standing on swings. Don’t allow children to play while wearing clothes with drawstrings, purses, backpacks or long necklaces, which can get caught on equipment and cause strangulation. Playground equipment can become uncomfortably or even dangerously hot, especially metal slides. if the equipment feels hot to the touch, it’s proba bly not safe or fun to play on. continued on page 14

According to Lanotte, falls are the leading cause of injury on playgrounds, but using the right equipment for a child’s age and soft surfacing can help prevent injuries.

Dog Safety - Every year in the United States, 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs, and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 60 percent of them are children. “Children under the age of 7 are especially vulnerable and are most likely to experience more severe injuries to their head, neck and face when bitten by a dog,” said St. Joseph’s Children’s Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Center Pediatrician Maximo Luque, M.D. To help prevent children from being bitten by dogs, Dr. Luque recommends that parents teach children: • •

Don’t approach an unfamiliar dog. Never disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. • Don’t scream or run from a dog. • If approached by an unfamiliar dog, be as still as possible and move away slowly either backwards or sideways. • If knocked over by a dog, roll into a ball, cover your face and stay still. • If bitten, immediately tell an adult. Dr. Luque adds that it’s important to remember that almost any dog can bite under the right circumstances, no matter how friendly they seem. now that you know how to keep your kids safe, it’s time for some summer fun. The Safety Store at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital features low-cost, injury-prevention products. Call 813-443-2064 or visit www.stjosephschildrens.com to learn more.

A

s a journalist, i’ve covered countless news stories involving kids drowning.

i can remember the tragedies case by case. imagine, a father falling asleep with his six-month-old on his lap. The baby gets up, crawls through the doggie door and drowns in the family pool. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children in the state of Florida. That’s right. More kids under the age of 4 die from unintentional drowning than from any other cause, according to the Florida Department of Health. it only takes an infant a second and a toddler not much longer to drown. So when i gave birth to the greatest blessing in my life, my daughter Samantha, my mind went into overdrive. How do i protect my little angel especially when it could happen when you least expect it. Sammie, as she likes to be called, could be spending time over a friend’s house for a pool party and tragedy could strike. That’s why my husband Dave and i made a critical decision for our family. Sammie was not even six months, not even walking, when we signed her up for swimming lessons. We decided to choose a swim instructor at our health club in Harbour island.

Perhaps i am a little more paranoid because of all the stories i’ve covered, but i urged my husband to invest the extra money in one-on-one sessions. Another critical decision for us was me not attending. Since i was so nervous at just the thought of my baby in a pool, we decided it may be better if Dave took the reins. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and also is certified as a professional dive instructor. Bottom line, my husband is very comfortable in the water. He felt that even though Sammie was so little, she could sense my nervousness and that would affect her lessons. i know that may sound a little too cautious, but we had read children can sense things at a very young age. i did not want Sammie to have any reservations about the water. So, every week Dave took her to swimming classes. By the time i went, she was a few months older and i was so surprised! She could actually kick her legs and float on her back with some help. She seemed to love the water! it was such a sense of relief and pride, but we still had a long way to go. i wanted Sammie to be a swimmer. We made sure we never missed a lesson. She had them twice a week for several months. By the time Sammie turned 2, she was swimming on her own! Here’s how passionate i am about teaching kids how to swim as soon as possible, especially here in Florida. My sister-in-law Caroline Stein, recently moved here from

Boston. My nephews Jakey, Kami and Aydin, who i love like my own, are young, ages, four, three and a few months, and did not know how to swim. The first piece of advice i gave Caroline, was to enroll the boys in some type of swimming class. She was surprised because in Boston there was no real rush to learn. Living in Florida, we need to be proactive since every 100 yards there is a pool, lake or some body of water. So she signed the boys up for swim school. Remember, the lessons do not have to be long. Jakey and Kami went every weekend, with each lesson lasting 20 minutes. instructors typically don’t want young kids in the water for too long for a variety of reasons, including safety, their body temperature and water intake. I find it amazing how quickly kids can learn to swim! now Sammie, who recently turned 4, and her cousins, can pretty much hold their own in the water. now we limit the classes to the summer months instead of year-round. Of course, this doesn’t mean we can leave them unattended. However, knowing our children are swimmers adds a layer of protection. Kids are often compared to sponges in the sense that they are able to soak in everything. So why not open the door to this life-saving lesson? For me, the peace of mind is priceless. Fazan is an Emmy award-winning journalist who anchors the 6 and 11p .m. on the weekends at ABC Action News.

Here in Florida, where the no. 1 cause of death in children younger than 4 is drowning, ensuring your child knows how to at least make it to the wall and surface should he fall in could be the difference between a scary event and a tragedy. Some experts suggest that swimming lessons also can enhance language skills and intellect in infants as well as aid coordination and balance, improve cardiovascular fitness and promote social confidence. There has been some debate about when to start swimming lessons, but the decision really lies with parents. While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends lessons for children 4 and older, it has discouraged parents of children ages 1 to 3 from enrolling them in lessons, saying there was no evidence that it helped prevent drownings and could create a false sense of security. Recently, several small studies have reported that swimming lessons lowered drowning risks, even for young children, and the AAP has since softened its stance. The group now recommends that parents decide whether to enroll their child in swim lessons based on the child’s frequency of exposure to water, emotional development and physical abilities, among other concerns. However, the AAP still does not recommend formal lessons for infants. Talk with your pediatrician when considering whether to enroll your infant in swim classes. Whether you decide to start now or wait, there are several schools in the bay area from which to choose. Seal Swim School, www.sealswimschool.com Three locations in Hillsborough C ounty Seal Swim School offers Parent Tot classes that are structured to create a comfortable and dynamic atmosphere. The school encourages parents to take an active role in the development of swimming skills for their children. The Tampa YMCA, www.tampaymca.org 13 locations throughout Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties The yMCA offers group swim lessons for ages 6 months to adult as well as private lessons, swim clubs and masters swim. its youth classes are designed to teach swimming basics, skills and safety through games. Classes never exceed a one to six instructor to participant ratio. The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County www.childrensboard.org The board offers parents important facts about drowning, pool safety information and lifesaving tips. it also can help parents connect with swim lesson providers.

think it’s funny that two years ago, when i was in fourth grade, i loved to write nothing but poems. When my fourth grade teacher Mr. Hill would want the class to write a short story, i tried to turn in my poems anyway because i just simply couldn’t write anything besides poetry. Mr. Hill unconditionally encouraged me to try writing some short stories, and even then, i hadn’t written any until the summer before going into fifth grade. One year later, i have written my debut novel The Eiffel Tower’s Daughter. And i know the secret behind it. Okay, here’s the truth. it’s not exactly a secret and it goes for everything, not just aspiring young authors. Here’s my motto: as long as you work hard to achieve your goal and put your heart into it, you will succeed at whatever you choose. My motto is the secret. if you really want to achieve something, don’t just say it and leave it behind in your computer somewhere or in an abandoned notepad. Here’s another thing i’ve got to say about my motto. Sometimes it’s really hard to write and it feels like you really want to do it but you can’t. Maybe you think that celebrities, movie stars, famous writers and singers never have a time when they can’t come up with

an idea, but everyone does. So have confidence in yourself. Maybe the confidence will fail you, but if you have the drive to keep going, you’ll do just fine. Along the way, maybe you’ll become a writer, young entrepreneur, singer, actor or designer. i’m sure you’ve all probably guessed that i love to read. Maybe some of you like to read, too, or you sort of like it but can’t find time to read. Well, I believe that reading stimulates the creative juices and helps you to come up with even greater ideas. Maybe you want to be a movie director and you read a scene in a book that jogs your imagination. Or maybe you want to be a fashion designer and read about this amazing dress in a book that makes you want to come up with one just as beautiful and flowing. Or you could just be reading for fun and all of a sudden you are staring at a usedto-be-blank-sheet-of-paper that is now a detailed, fully fledged drawing. give it a try? There’s always a new talent inside your brain, ready to escape and come out. “All of the books are boring,” you complain. Maybe they aren’t the type of genre that you like. if you like reading about ghosts, vampires and werewolves, try reading paranormal fiction. Or if you like reading about things like cloning in action books, try reading science-fiction. You might even like reading about sports. So try reading books by Mike Lupica. Maybe you like reading about books that have people with fans, parasols, tea parties and the like, then historical fiction is definitely in your league. So give reading a try and you just might end up loving it. Between homework, extracurricular activities and hanging out with friends, where do you squeeze the reading in? Why not organize a study session with your friends and do homework together in the library? That way you can talk to your friends, research homework or essays and find a great new book to read. Or if it’s too much hassle to get dropped off at your local library, try going to the library every weekend and spend 30 minutes there, reading or looking for great books to read. What does it take to be an author? To me, all it takes is perseverance and determination. Just let your natural abilities take time to develop. you can’t force yourself or plan out the times that you’re going to write. you just do. Once i sat in my bedroom at dinnertime and wrote seven whole pages. Seven! That number was like a blue diamond that day, rare and wonderful. Writing is so amazing because you get to create your own adventure. it’s like seeing your imagination come alive. If you try your hardest to fulfill your dream, there’s definitely nothing that can stop you. That’s exactly the route that i took, and i published my novel at the age of 10. i hope that this summer will be one unlike any other, the summer where you’ll reach forward or try something new, like reading or writing, which will become the summer that you’ll remember for eternity. Bethany Huang is the author of The Eiffel Tower’s Daughter: The Truth Behind the Lies. Now 11, she lives with her parents and brother in New York and loves reading and writing. Her book is available at www. bethanyhuang.com and major retailers.

light up the

Sky safely

Celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks is as American as apple pie. But did you know more fires and burns are reported on the Fourth than any other due to improper setup? Florida has some of the loosest laws in regards to fireworks, so it is important that families research and prepare before marking our nation’s independence. Here are ways your family can enjoy the flashing lights. • When you buy fireworks, make sure the fireworks are legal in Florida and are being sold by licensed retailers. • Choose a location that is clear of trees and at least 100 feet from your home. Never use fireworks indoors or under a cover patio. • Always have a fire extinguisher on hand. • No one younger than 18 and no one who’s had a few too many should light fireworks. • All bystanders should be at least 50 feet away from all fireworks since they have been known to misfire or fire in the wrong direction. • Although some fireworks, like Roman Candles, indicate that they are safe to hold while lighting, never hold a firework while lighting or while it is going off. • Light one firework at a time. • If for some reason a firework is lighted and it does not go off, don’t approach it and don’t attempt to relight it. • Make sure that all pets are indoors. Animals have very sensitive ears and can be extremely frightened by explosions. • Before disposing of fireworks, douse all dead fireworks with a significant amount of water. Fifteen percent of fires reported on Fourth of July start in the trash. • If someone gets injured, immediately seek medical attention. your fun can be easily spoiled by injury, so keep safety in the forefront of any activities. if you really want to be safe, relax and enjoy one of the free fireworks shows across the bay area. For family friendly Fourth of July events, check out our July calendar on page 50. We hope you a have a blast, or more appropriately, lots of fun this Fourth of July!

Extraordinary woman

.........................................

By AngelA Ardolino

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.

Born in Landstuhl, Germany, Amber McCuistion was raised in a military family, moving often during her youth. She enlisted in the Army in 1999 and discovered a passion for understanding the historical and social elements that shape populations all over the world. This led her to earn an undergraduate degree in social science from Troy University with a concentration in sociology and a minor in psychology.

particularly significant for me. I’m the first person in my family to do so and it was a long time coming. i didn’t have the traditional education track that so many of my friends had out of high school. i spent years in the Army and adult workforce, taking a couple classes at a time. Crossing the stage at graduation was an incredible feeling and i’m especially glad that my stepdaughters and grandparents were there to see me accomplish this goal.

McCuistion joined CEnTCOM in July 2008, becoming the senior intelligence analyst for the Human Terrain Analysis branch, a component of the Afghanistan-Pakistan Center, and have recently assumed dual responsibilities as the acting branch chief.

What is your biggest achievement?

McCuistion’s husband Kevin also serves his country, working as a Department of Defense contractor. Despite demanding schedules, they maintain a close family unit with her stepdaughters Emory, 16, and Ryleigh, 13, and son Jonah, 1. Living the true Florida lifestyle, they love spending time with the kids’ outdoors, especially at local festivals and amusement parks.

What do you think is the secret to your family’s success?

Without a doubt the secret to our success is that we work together to keep the house, kids, and ourselves in order. My husband and i both have demanding careers at MacDill AFB and our schedules are very hectic. Between dropping off and picking up our son at childcare, getting back to St. Pete for karate class (we take classes at different times), fixing dinner, cleaning, etc. it’s so important that we all chip in. now that Emory and Ryleigh are older, they are a big help with Jonah and household chores. Everyone pitches in and most of the time, we stay on top of things.

What advice would you give to other women?

Do not wait for things to happen for you; deliberately and purposefully seek opportunities that enhance your personal and professional life. Pursue what you are passionate about and although there may be bumps along the way, you’ll be much happier in the end. Also, believe in yourself and surround yourself with friends and family that lift you up. There’s nothing like having your own personal cheer section!

What is your proudest moment?

As corny as it sounds, graduating from college was

There are many things that i am happy to have achieved in my life so it would be impossible to identify a single achievement. One achievement is maintaining a strong marriage despite my husband’s overseas deployments and the multitude of temporary duty assignments i’ve taken throughout the United States and overseas. Another is creating a happy, healthy blended family. Being a parent is a tough job and any stepparent can attest that being a step has its own challenges. i met my stepdaughters when they were 5 and 8 and as they got older we had our share of differences. The girls are teenagers now and i have a unique and special relationship with each. They are so good with Jonah and our family is stronger for the experiences that we’ve been through together.

What makes you happy?

Picking my son up from school and seeing him smile when he notices i’ve entered the room. Having either one of my stepdaughters take up a hobby that i introduced to them. Practicing karate with my husband and knowing that he’s proud of me for nailing a kick, block or combination. Coaching and mentoring my team and seeing their passion for the work we do. i love hearing a great song in the car and having the whole family singalong. Kevin and i want the kids to learn that little things can be big fun, too.

How do you relax and take time for yourself?

i love getting pedicures! That’s one hour where i’m guaranteed to not have to talk, think or do anything that i don’t want to do. i love reading and have three books i’m trying to get through right now. A pedicure chair is the one place i know i’ll get in an hour of uninterrupted reading.

What kind of message would you like to give women in the area or in this community?

There are so many things to do in Tampa and the

surrounding area. you have to get out and take advantage of them. i’ve met so many amazing people at local events and festivals and learned a lot about what our community has to offer working parents and children.

What else would you like to share with our readers? About being a mom, about your work? Being a mom is the best job i’ve ever had. no matter how hard my day has been, when i see my little man’s face everything is better for that moment in time. Be relentless in the pursuit of your professional endeavors and try not to get discouraged by setbacks. Find someone who can always help you see the window that may have opened when a door shut.

How do you enjoy or draw information from the magazine?

i love the advertisements and articles. i have gotten a lot of great parenting advice from the columns in TBP. i’ve also been able to get great insight into local events for the kids and camps/ schools in our area.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids in Tampa Bay? Outdoor festivals and activities are our favorite pastime. Vinoy Park always has a music or food festival going on and we like hanging out in the park, dangling our feet on the seawall, and soaking in the sun.

Who is your biggest inspiration or role model?

My father is my role model. He was in the Air Force while i was growing up. We moved a lot and he worked long, hard hours. However, he always made the most of every minute he was home with us. We went camping, surfing, skiing, fishing and played sports. He shared his passion for the outdoors with us but also encouraged my brothers and me to develop our own interests. He lives in Alabama and the business he built after retiring from the Air Force was destroyed by Hurricane ivan. Over the past seven years he has overcome tremendous setbacks and adversity. He humbled himself and worked jobs outside his area of expertise just to provide for the family. He is a pillar of strength, determination and modesty. Everyone back home loves and respects him. i hope that i leave half the impression on people i interact with that he has.

He is an accomplished singer, songwriter, guitarist, flutist and dulcimer player and has traveled throughout Florida since 1979, performing popular music as well as early English and irish ballads. Crisis Center Launches Teen Volunteer Program The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay recently launched its teen-focused volunteer program Teens in Motion. There are various volunteer opportunities available at the center, allowing teens to earn community service credit. “it is because of the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay’s corporate partnership with AAA Auto Club South and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety that this program idea was sparked to educate teens on safety and community resources, while offering them opportunities to get volunteer hours,” says Carissa Caricato, director of marketing and communications for the center. “it is our hope that every teen in Tampa Bay will know they have a free resource, 2-1-1, to call if they need advice on anything, including depression, teen pregnancy, bullying or teen dating violence. Our Teens in Motion can serve as ambassadors within their school communities once they know someone cares about making their tomorrow a better day!” A variety of volunteer opportunities are available including: • Travelers Aid at Tampa International Airport — Assisting travelers at Tampa international Airport with travel-related problems and information, a program offered through a joint effort between AAA Auto Club South and the Crisis Center. • Telephone Reassurance Volunteer — Make daily reassurance calls to low-income, sociallyisolated elderly and disabled adults from the 2-1-1 call center. • Cell Phone/Pager Collection Drive Organizer — Assisting with a collection drive of used or new cell phones and pagers to be forwarded to an organization that recycles them; in return, the Crisis Center receives funding to expand services to children and domestic violence victims in crisis. • Office Assistant — Support the center through administrative assistance, such as light clerical work and data entry. Minimal training is required and times vary, depending on assignment and volunteer availability. • Friend of the Crisis Center — Raise funds for the center directly. Family-Focused Businesses Join Forces A group of local family-minded business owners have come together to create a new, helpful resource for families, St. Pete Family Connections. The organization launched at downtown St. Petersburg’s Saturday Morning Market at the booth of one of its members, Cheeky Monkey Books & Toys, during its Storytime series. SPFC chose Storytime at the Saturday Market to launch because several of its founders are regular participants in the local tradition. Olga Bof of Cheeky Monkey reads new children’s books not yet found on the shelves. Colleen McGrath of you and Me & Music Together provides interactive music with special guests. Sheri Kendrick of Enchanted Forest Photography uploads pictures from the family-focused event that visitors can view and purchase. “i continually hear from the families i teach, new parents in particular, that they just don’t know where to learn about what’s available for them and their children in our community,” says McGrath. “it became clear other family-minded providers were hearing the same things, so we banded together to give our clients a go-to resource.” Other SPFC members include Christie Bruner of Baby Boot Camp, family and child therapist Delene Cole, Jennifer Carey-Prescott of Thank you Mama, Jennifer Pierson of the Suncoast JCC and Sara Madle of Alegria Montessori. Visit www.spfamilyconnections.com to learn more about classes, events and special offers.

Bay Area Girl Scouts Receive Highest Honors nineteen Girl Scouts from west central Florida received Gold Awards — the highest achievement in Girl Scouting — at a recognition event last month at the DoubleTree Hotel Tampa Airport-Westshore. The Girl Scout Gold Award is considered the culmination of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience as demonstrated by the three keys of leadership: discover, connect and take action. The award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in The 2011 Girl Scout Gold Award recipients with mistress of ceremonies the areas of leadership, and News Channel 8 meteorologist Leigh Spann. sustainable community service, career planning and personal development. A Girl Scout must at least be in the ninth grade and have successfully completed requirements before she begins working on her Gold Award project. This year’s Girl Scout Gold Award recipients completed projects focused on a variety of community issues, including developing an after-school art enrichment program for elementary school students; repairing the grounds at local churches, parks, camps and organizations; educating youth about healthy cooking and eating habits; and providing displaced families with clothing needs. “To earn a Gold Award, a Girl Scout must take all of the knowledge, leadership and networking skills she has developed over the years and set forth to complete a service project that will benefit her community,” said Linda Babb, president, Girl Scouts of West Central Florida. “She must discover what it is that her community needs; connect with local businesses, organizations and neighbors; and take action to better the world around her.” Girl Scouts spend 65 hours planning and implementing their Gold Award projects, which are designed to have positive and lasting impacts on the community. A Girl Scout who has earned her Gold Award immediately rises one rank in any of the U.S. military branches. During the awards ceremony, Anjali Modi and Mollie Schick, both of Tampa, received Girl Scouts of West Central Florida scholarships for their outstanding accomplishments in scouting, contributions to their local communities and future aspirations following high school graduation. Modi received her Gold Award in 2010; Schick in 2009. Girl Scouts of West Central Florida scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors pursuing a higher education. To receive a scholarship, the applicants must have been a Gold Award recipient; maintained at least a 3.0 GPA throughout their high school career; detailed their Girl Scout accomplishments, community/volunteer awards, academic achievements and school activities, and plans for higher education; and submitted a 500-word essay reflecting how Girl Scouts has helped them to make their world and community a better place.
