This month nearly 4 million Americans will travel, with about a quarter of those people traveling abroad. if you’re planning an adultsonly getaway, check out the Viceroy Riviera Maya on page 10. it’s just a little over two hours flight time but you will feel like you’re on the other side of the world. if you’re not planning to venture far from home, my friend Deiah Riley has some local spots where you can entertain family, friends and yourself.
Me on my recent trip
to the Xcaret underg round rivers in Mexico .
Summertime in Florida equals lots of water activities, from boating to wakeboarding to waterskiing. Before heading out, take a look at Amy Gall of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital boating safety tips on page 18. Summer months also can bring the dreaded summer slide, when students forget some of what they’ve learned during the school year. On page 26, Carrie Scheiner gives some tips on how to prevent this brain drain. This month our Extraordinary Girl feature returns with Madison Jung of Riverview. She, along with her best friend, raised funds to create Fit Track at the FishHawk Sports Complex. Read more about her on page 28. Even though it’s summer, i’ll still be on ABC Action news every Thursday at noon (Saturday at 9 a.m.) talking about what matters most to parents and families. This month, we’ll be discussing traveling with kids, separation anxiety and preventative care heading into the busy back-to-school season. Speaking of back to school, make sure to mark your calendars for the fifth annual Back to School Fair on Aug. 11. As Tampa’s premier back-to-school event, we’ll prepare and inspire your entire family for the upcoming year. Visit www.backtoschoolfair.com to learn more. Stay safe and have a happy Fourth of July!
We love to hear from you. Don’t forget to become a fan on Facebook and get daily updates, enter contests, share pictures and chat with other families. You can check us out at TBParenting.com, too, or follow us on Twitter @tbparenting.

eeking an escape from the stress of everyday life? i recently discovered the ultimate refuge at the newly renovated Viceroy Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway with your partner or a spa retreat with a handful of your best friends, this is the seaside haven for adults to recharge their batteries. The moment you arrive in the open-air lobby, which is without any kind of check-in desk or walls, you immediately realize this is not going to be the run-of-the mill hotel experience. The resort manager greets you with an iced hand towel and a cool Mayan cocktail. He then personally guides you along a winding stone path through a lush jungle, offering a tour of all that the oceanfront Viceroy has to offer. To begin your stay, you are treated to a Mayan blessing ritual of Copal incense at the Wayak, the Viceroy’s sensual spa. The sacred smoke floats around your body and is said to purify and cleanse your spirit. it also dissolves the last bits of city stress or travel fatigue you may have brought with you. The scent of Copal becomes pleasantly familiar as it is used throughout the resort. The Viceroy recently was renovated and now hosts 41 exquisite jungle and ocean view private villas, each with over 1,000 square feet of beautiful living space nestled in tropical foliage. Combining the natural elements of stone, mahogany and palm, the villa’s decor gives you the primal feeling that you are outdoors but with all of the creature comforts. Every structure on the property was designed with the influence of
ancient Mayan cultures, complete with circular architecture and soaring thatched Palapa ceilings in the villas, the spa and even the cabanas on the beach. Each villa comes with its own outdoor living room with crocheted hammocks and a private plunge pool. When you walk into the newly renovated bathroom, it actually takes your breath away. Mostly enclosed by only glass walls, this oversized luxurious bath offers an indoor shower and deep soaking tub in addition to a lush atrium with a private outdoor shower. This is a seriously decadent bath experience. The Wayak Spa is a slice of zen heaven, offering a myriad of massage therapies, spa treatments and Mayan rituals to indulge your every sensory whim. The circular spa has a tranquil candlelit Jacuzzi area and stone steam room to enjoy before and after your treatments. The Holistic Massage is an incredible mingling of exquisite essential oils with deep tissue massage and reflexology. I had this treatment at dusk in a softly draped outdoor room bordering the rainforest, my relaxation enhanced by the calls of exotic birds and monkeys. They can also arrange to have your services performed on the ocean pier overlooking the Caribbean. The spa therapists are exemplary in meeting your every expectation. you will leave the Wayak with all tensions dissolved from your body and spirit. continued on page 12

FAMILY TIME THAT COLORS OUTSIDE THE LINES.
Floating down the Xcaret underground rivers.
Build vibrant vacation memories, as you and your family bask in golden sun on our famous beaches. Delight in dazzling hues at Mote Aquarium, curious colors at G.WIZ — The Science Museum, or a prism of history at the Ringling Circus Museum. And don’t miss the variety of shopping, dining and family entertainment you’ll find here year-round. Create a kaleidoscope of family fun — come see the colors of Sarasota.

The resort has two oceanfront restaurants with fabulous cuisine. The casual beachside Coral Grill & Bar and the intimate La Marea loft restaurant both offer menu selections with unusual and artistic combinations. interesting twists on the usual cocktail abound at the beachside bar. The Viceroy offers a unique dine anywhere policy, which doesn’t really hit home until you have a gourmet meal with a few signature margaritas delivered to the ocean pier at sunset. Fine dining with your feet dangling over the ocean is definitely an amenity! One excursion that you don’t want to miss is a visit to nearby Xcaret, an incredible archaeological park located only 20 minutes from the Viceroy. Mother Nature at her finest, Xcaret is a 200acre expanse of ocean inlets and underground rivers opening into the Caribbean Sea. The rivers of the Yucatan Peninsula flow into Xcaret, making the water incredibly bright and clear. The park offers more than 40 attractions, including snorkeling through sparkling rivers and mangroves, swimming with dolphins and sharks, a butterfly pavilion and coral reef aquarium. Everything is mingled with ancient Mayan history and culture. When evening comes, don’t miss the huge Xcaret night Show, a festival highlighting the music and history of Mexican traditions. There are no words to describe this breathtaking mystical place. if you’re looking to enjoy the local nightlife, Playa del Carmen has lots of hot spots and is only a few minutes away. Among many other on-site amenities, the resort offers yoga classes, an oceanfront workout facility, a gift shop and Mayan cooking classes. The beauty is in the details at the Viceroy Riviera Maya, from the incredibly friendly and attentive staff to the rich detail in the natural décor of the villas and resort. imagine the look and feel of a pristine and beautiful deserted island, only it comes with every spa amenity, culinary delights and five-star service. This is no Gilligan’s Island.

the journey of water and working as an engineer. This place is perfect for allowing their imaginations to run wild! Ryan also loves the “veterinary play area” on the second floor. She usually makes up some rare illness that she’s treating a dog for. i think medical school is in her future and working for the rest of my life to pay for it is in mine!

Just outside the museum is the real gem we love showing off. Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa is usually our showstopper. Talk about turning on the charm and romance. Overlooking the Hillsborough River, it’s the perfect spot for an outdoor picnic. Make sure you pack a swimsuit for your kids. They’ll love spending the afternoon running in and out of the dancing fountains. Depending on how hot it is, you might consider it, too. i promise i won’t put you on the news for it.

an your family afford $1,200? According to Travelocity.com, that’s the average price a family of four would pay to fly from Chicago to Tampa this summer. Tack on the price of a hotel, rental car, and meals during and it could jump to well over $2,500 for a week’s worth of fun in the sun. if you include the cost of visiting area attractions, the bill could easily skyrocket past $3,000. if, like me, you’re lucky enough to call Florida home, you’re probably feeling pretty good right now. We have the privilege of enjoying this vacation paradise anytime we want for a fraction of the cost! no airfare. no hotel. no rental car. Just the price of a tank of gas and tickets to local attractions can be a staycation to remember. As a morning anchor on ABC Action news, my days start early. Very early! i’m up at 2:30 a.m. yes, i adhere to the old adage, early to bed, early to rise. But my family and i make time for fun, and lots of it. We like to call ourselves professional day-cationers. We routinely pack up our daughters Riley, 5½, and
Ryan, 4, on Saturday mornings and hit the road for daylong adventures. The most difficult part of our travel plans usually involves where to start first. Several times a month we start out in Tampa. The Florida Aquarium is one of our favorites on a hot day. My girls absolutely love the aquarium’s Explore a Shore! it’s the perfect spot for all of us. My husband and I usually find a shady spot to chill (the Cantina bar and grill) while our girls run 90-miles a minute from one thing to the next. They start out on the playground, then race full steam ahead toward the water adventure zone to cool off. i’ve even joined them a few times on the pirate ship. it’s pretty hard to resist the water canons and geysers, especially on a near 100-degree day. Another cool place is the Glazer Children’s Museum. it’s our “go to” place to take family and friends when they visit from out of town. My girls can easily spend the entire afternoon playing on the first floor without ever venturing to the second floor. There are a variety of play stations for kids to take on all kinds of roles. They can be a tug boat captain, then move on to working on a cruise ship to following
MOSi and Tampa’s Lowry Park zoo are two more favorites. The rides are perfect for younger kids. They’re not too fast or high. They’re just right for little thrill seekers. i love them because the girls can actually ride alone or together without having Mommy climb on or into a ride. Riley especially loves the pony rides at the zoo. As soon as we get there, she nearly pulls my arm out of socket trying to get to Marshall, her favorite pony. The camel ride is a highlight for them more so than me. it’s hard to look poised and cute sitting on top of a camel. i’m just saying! if you love dolphins, your family has several options! There are countless sightseeing boat tours all over the bay area that promise to get you up close and personal with dolphins. For the thrill seekers in your family the choices are limitless! There’s Busch Gardens in Tampa and for the little adrenaline junkies, there is Legoland Florida in Winter Haven. These parks offer something for everyone. We’re partial to Legoland since it’s geared toward younger kids, ages 2 to 12. The rides are just daring enough to create butterflies in little tummies but not enough to keep them from coming back for more. The girls squeal on the “Beetle Bounce” while i hold on for dear life. Another bonus of this park, the lines move quickly and the park is very clean. The live water ski show is a definite must see! Spoiler Alert: Don’t sit in the front row unless you like getting soaked. Of course no staycation is complete without a trip to one of our world famous beaches! With so many options for fun in the sun, a tank of gas and an imagination are all you need for a daycation your family will never forget. The best part is you get to sleep in your own bed when the day is done. Deiah Riley is the morning news anchor for ABC Action News and has lived in Tampa since 2003.

loose. “Accidents on the water can happen much too fast to try and put on a stowed life jacket, and it won’t save you or your child’s life unless it’s being worn,” Maynard says. • Take a boating safety course. Make sure the boat operator has passed a boating safety course approved by the U.S. Coast Guard before your family climbs on board. • Encourage everyone to learn how to swim. Enroll children in swim lessons taught by a certified instructor when they are ready. Knowing how to swim does not prevent drowning, but it is an important skill for both children and adults to learn. Maynard adds, “never assume your child is drownproof after completing swim lessons; he or she still needs constant supervision.” • Only swim in designated swimming areas. Swimming in open water is not the same as swimming in a pool. Be aware of uneven surfaces, river currents, ocean undertow and changing weather. It also is difficult to know how deep the water is or what might be hidden under the surface.

hether you’re on a powerboat, sailboat or canoe, spending time on the water can be a fun and relaxing way to enjoy the summer weather with family and friends. But with more than 750 deaths and close to 3,000 injuries each year from recreational boating accidents, it’s important to remember that it also can be a dangerous activity. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, boating fatalities jumped 12.8 percent in 2011 and are now at the highest level since 1998. Seventy percent of all fatal boating accident victims drowned, and of those, 84 percent were reported as not wearing a life jacket. “Actively supervising children in and around the water, using the appropriate safety
devices, learning water safety skills, and knowing what to do in an emergency may prevent a boating-related drowning,” says Bevin Maynard, a water safety expert at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Before you plan your summer fun on the water, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital reminds parents to keep kids safe by following these simple steps. • Make sure everyone always wears a life jacket. Life jackets should fit snugly and keep the child’s head above water. Make sure the life jacket is appropriate for the child’s size and weight and is properly fastened. Quick Check: Put the life jacket on the child and have the child make a “touchdown” signal with arms raised. if the neck opening of the life jacket comes over the child’s chin or ears, it may be too big or the straps may be too
• Always supervise children when they are around water. Designate a “Water Watcher” – a responsible adult who is in charge of watching children while they are in or near water. This adult should not be distracted by phone calls, text messages, reading or talking to others. For information on how to get a free Water Watcher whistle, contact St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Safety Store at 813-554-8510. • Learn CPR and know how to use rescue equipment. These are important skills to know if there is an emergency. “Performing CPR on drowning victims immediately may prevent brain damage and be the difference between life and death,” Maynard says. • Do not let children operate or ride on personal watercrafts such as jet skis. These are intended for adults and require special training. • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Know where and how it may accumulate around your boat, and install a detector to alert you to dangerous levels of exhaust fumes. • Avoid alcoholic beverages. Never drink while boating — a large portion of boating accidents each year involve alcohol consumption by both boat operators and passengers. For more information on boating safety, or to sign up for an upcoming CPR class at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, visit www.stjosephschildrens.com.

P
arents line up summer camp but they should also plan for preventing the dreaded summer slide.
The summer slide is the information and skills children forget during summer break. This education slide is welldocumented. And while some people are aware of the learning loss, many aren’t aware that children tend to gain weight more rapidly when they’re out of school. What can parents do to keep young brains and bodies engaged in healthy ways over the summer? Journal current achievement levels. How do you know if your child is affected by summer slide if you don’t remember where they ended the year? Create a summer journal and, in the first few pages, document their end of year scholastic achievements. Were they adding and subtracting double-digit numbers? Doing long division? What were some of their vocabulary or spelling words? Throughout the summer you can track their progress and, at the least,
maintain those levels – or maybe even move on to more challenging material. Try a weeklong educational day camp. We all want our kids to have fun during the summer, and they can. Enroll in the fun, active day camps that focus on learning through play. Toward the end of the summer, you may want to have your children attend one week of math camp and one week of reading camp as a refresher. Free time that feeds the brain. Kids have a lot more free time in the summer. With fewer scheduled activities, even kids who attend a camp may have more time to hang out in the evening. How can you feed their brain during this extra time? Visit the library and check out print books, audio books, educational DVDs, and even educational computer games. Many websites offer activity ideas that you and the kids can enjoy together. ACTIVE-ate the brain. Staying active exercises both the body and the brain. Just like our body needs exercise to stay healthy, so does the brain

to keep those neurons firing. Encourage kids to stay active and play outside during the summer and allow only limited, scheduled times for sedentary activities such as video games or TV.
Finding fun, creative ways to expand learning is the perfect way to avoid the dreaded slide. The Exploracise Ellipsoid is a soft, stuffed football that makes learning math fundamentals more exciting than flash cards. Carrie Scheiner was inspired by her children to develop the Exploracise program, www.exploracise.com, providing parents and educators with award-winning products and programs that combine learning, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices.

Extraordinary girl
.......................................
By angela ardOlInO
Sharing tales of leadership, community and hope.
Madison Jung, 12, recently finished her Girl Scout Silver Award project — Fit Track 2012— with her best friend Madison Lynn. The project may ring a bell with TBP readers because her best friend was our February Extraordinary Girl. As the saying goes, birds of a feather; and the two Madisons are definitely helping each other reach for the stars.
What are your aspirations for the future?
What makes you happy? Why?
What do you think is important to do for your community? Why?
i really enjoy playing softball, camping, going to amusement parks, dirt bike riding, going to the beach, having sleepovers, going out on our boat and doing fun things like that with my friends and family.
Who is your biggest inspiration or role model? Why? My biggest role model is my Aunt Kerry. She is very athletic and pushes herself to do everything to the best of her ability. She competes in skiing, biking, running, canoeing and dragon boat races. She’s a high school P.E. teacher and is fun to be around. She makes everyone feel good about themselves, tells really funny stories and always has a positive attitude.
What is your favorite thing to do with your family? My favorite thing to do with my family is going on cruises.
What advice do you have for girls your age? Be who you are because you shouldn’t change yourself for anyone.
What do you think kids can do to make a difference in their community? They can lead others by picking up trash if they see it just lying on the street. There is also recycling at home and in the community. Communities look so much nicer when trash is where it should be.
i want to play college softball. i’m not sure what i want to be when i grow up, probably something involving kids.
What is your favorite way to relax?
Hanging out with my friends, camping or listening to music.
It’s important to do projects that benefit the people in your community because it could help you gain leadership skills such as talking in front of large groups of adults and working with business people. At the same time, you’re doing everyone in your community a favor.
If you could change the world in one way, what would it be?
i would change it so that everybody had food. in America it’s not that big of a deal, and we take food for granted. But in other countries it’s a huge problem. About 6 million children starve each year, and that fact is really disturbing to me.
What does Girl Scouts mean to you?
To me, Girl Scouts means doing good things for your community and other people while having fun with your friends and other Girl Scouts. We go camping no matter what the temperature is and have a blast. it helps you come a lot closer with your friends. We do archery, rock wall climbing, zip lining, horseback riding and canoeing. Sometimes, the best part is just hanging out in the cabin.
Tell us about your Girl Scout community service project, favorite experience, etc. My favorite experience was going to Savannah, Georgia with my troop. We stayed in a hotel for a few nights and went all throughout Savannah in the daytime. it was so much fun! One of the things we did was go on a ghost tour in an old
hearse. it was supposed to be scary but it was actually pretty funny. Also, we went to a beach at Tybee island (even though we were in sweatshirts and jeans because it was 40-degree weather) and we took pictures then walked down the beach with a marine biologist who told us about the marine life at the island. After that we looked through Tybee island’s marine biology center, which was pretty cool. Other things we did were go to Juliette Gordon Lowes’ house, hung out at the hotel, and went to an etiquette dinner. We completed our Bronze Award project when i was in fourth grade. We planted a flower garden at Steppin’ Stones Farm, which is a home for at-risk teenage girls. To buy all of the items we needed to make the garden, we used cookie money and garage sale money that we earned in the previous year. Madison Lynn and I recently finished our Girl Scout Silver Award project, Fit Track 2012. We raised $17,000 to install a fitness track at the FishHawk Sports Complex, where we both play travel softball. There are 10 stations on a 1.3 mile long track. it’s open to the public so anybody can use it, and coaches can apply it to practices to train and condition their student athletes. The stations give you a variety of workouts. you can do chin ups, step ups, bench curls, push-ups and bench sits at the stations as well as a cardiovascular workout in between. it’s a great way to work out!
What message do you want to share with other girls and families? Being in a social group such as Girl Scouts or a sport is a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to meet new people or get closer with your friends. i was playing softball when i met Maddy Lynn. At school you don’t really get the chance to see people that aren’t in your class so sometimes being in a social group can keep you connected with your old friends while making new friends at the same time.

Girl Scouts Bring Library to Early Learning Center On May 30, Girl Scout Junior Troop 564 recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open a library that the troop’s members set up at Rosa Valdez Early Learning Center, 1802 n. Albany St., in west Tampa. Junior Troop 564 members, comprised of fifth grade girls, learned about the need at the local learning center and set out to build a library to increase literacy at the preschool. The girls created a theme for the library based on The Very Hungry Caterpillar and recruited local artist Christopher West to donate his time and materials to bring the theme to life.
Members of Girl scout Junior Troop 564 have worked closely with the students at the Early Learning Center, playing and reading to them.
They also collected more than 2,000 books, used proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program to buy items to outfit the library and appealed to local businesses for donations. The girls also spent a lot of time with the children at the center, playing and reading their favorite books to them.
“The girls were able to develop a wonderful relationship with the children,” says Troop 564 Leader Lezlie Gold. “The troop is honored to give back to the center where Rosa Valdez, a pioneer in her time, started one of the first Girl Scout Troops in the nation.” To learn more about the Girls Scouts, go to www.gswcf.org or call 1-800-881-4475.

Meal Delivery Program Seeks Volunteers The neighborly Care network is in need of volunteers to participate in the organization’s neighborly Meals on Wheels program. The program is a hands-on opportunity to interact with members of the community by delivering hot, nutritious meals to homebound residents in Pinellas County. Volunteers are asked to allocate 1½ hours midday for any days they can commit to on a weekly basis to deliver meals. Volunteers will deliver to the Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Gulfport and Pinellas Park areas. Volunteers pick up meals at a designated site and deliver to homebound residents in their area, with maps and directions provided. The neighborly Care network was launched in 1966 by a group of concerned citizens. Within a year, the group became a nonprofit and began its first federally funded Meals on Wheels program. Today, the program delivers meals to about 1,200 homebound residents across Pinellas County. if you would like additional information about the program or volunteering, contact Sandi narron of the neighborly Care network at 727-573-9444, Ext. 4210. you also can learn more at www.neighborly.org.
