Summer is one of my favorite times of year because so many family members drop in for a visit. nothing’s better than lounging at the lake catching up with those you love. With summer in full swing, your kids may have all but forgotten about books. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With so much time on their hands, summer is a great time for your kids to explore the magic of reading and getting them hooked may be a lot easier than you think. Check out page 22 for some quick tips on how to nurture your kid’s love of reading and some book suggestions for the summer!

Me with Pati and Clar a at the Miami Childre n’s Theater Gala.

i’m a big believer that teachable moments happen every day — and summer is no exception. if you’re tired of the tweens and teens in your life just asking for cash, it might be time to have them pursue their first job. Whether it’s washing cars or bagging groceries, helping your children learn about finance and develop a strong work ethic is a teachable summer moment. Check out page 10 and see how to help your children become wage earners. A few months ago, a wonderful woman in Tampa Bay was brought to our attention. Vicky Westra is the owner of Artistas Café, a program that offers job training, internships and employment for high functioning adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Through this work and the Art for Autism Foundation, she is a shining example of how one person can make an enormous difference. Her amazing story is on page 30. When we were young it never crossed our minds that we might have to watch over the people who cared for us. But as our parents grow older, taking care of them isn’t out of the realm of possibility. On page 14, my friend Dan Shaffer gives some insight on how to approach this topic with your spouse and parents. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for this year’s Back to School Fair on Aug. 10. The Glazer Children’s Museum will play host to the Tampa Bay area’s only back to school event. you and the kids will get a chance to meet with after-school providers, tutors, schools and health and wellness experts. Plus, get hands-on with the downtown attraction’s numerous exhibits. Visit www.BackToSchoolFair.com for details and/or to become an exhibitor. Happy Fourth of July!

ummertime is here. it’s time for fun in the sun and financial literacy learning? What? Seriously, it’s true. The summer offers good opportunities to improve children’s financial literacy. Consider the classic lemonade stand. Rather than just set up a stand using materials from your pantry and refrigerator, have them go to the store with you and purchase what they need. you can certainly help them with their initial investment (if only all business loans were this easy), but the financial lesson will be magnified if you make them a part of the entire business process. Understanding that there are costs involved in making money is an invaluable lesson. next, have them think about marketing. Where are they going to place their stand? Sure in front of the house is convenient but perhaps a corner (assuming it’s safe) might provide more visibility. Better yet, keep the convenience of the house-front stand and send a friend to attract attention at a nearby corner — directing folks to come and quench their thirst. if they’re really entrepreneurial, have them create flyers to

distribute around the neighborhood. This next suggestion may be a bit over the top. i’ve tried it with my kids and it has helped them learn some solid sales techniques. Have them purchase some munchies to go along with the lemonade to teach them the art of the soft upsell. “Would you like a granola bar with your lemonade?” Before you recoil in horror, think about the importance of learning sales techniques in today’s marketplace. Traditional, secure jobs are harder and harder to come by and today’s workers must constantly think entrepreneurially. They must learn to sell themselves and their ideas. This is an easy way to expose them to the concept. So how do your kids get this money that they are going to use to start their business? i strongly suggest setting up an allowance. There are many benefits to setting up an allowance. Giving your kids control of their money is very empowering. in a society in which so much negativity is directed toward money and the accumulation of it (some warranted, some not), wouldn’t it be nice to raise children who used

smart money

money for what it is — a tool.

............................... Giving an allowance also can help reduce the, “i wants.” you’ll inevitably endparrIsH up in a store by sandy this summer. When you empower kids with an allowance and make them understand that they are responsible for small purchases, the i want cries will go down dramatically. i’m certainly not suggesting that the “i wants” will end; however, you will certainly have a context for a conversation about why they can have something rather than a knock-down, drag-out war in the store. When starting an allowance, i advocate a basic three-jar system: share, save and “spend smart.” My 7-year-old daughter gets a $7 allowance every Friday. Each week, we require that she deposit $2 into her save jar and $1 into her share jar. She can divvy up the remaining money among any of the jars. Doing this weekly reinforces the habit of making smart choices every time she handles money. We also have her paste goals on the save jar. A starter goal, like a scooter, might take a month or two. (This jar is about saving for a rainy day.)

........................................................................................................................................................ Teaching your child to set and achieve goals is arguably one of the most important life skills you can teach them.

JUST ADD WATER AND WATCH THEM GROW Learning how to swim isn’t just about encouraging your kids to get in the water. Learning to swim is about building skills that will help ensure their safety, and participating in a healthy activity that can last a lifetime. The Y offers group swim lessons for all ages including adults! The Y also offers private lessons, developmental swim league and competitive swim league, as well as synchronized swimming at some locations.

I think all parents find themselves a little worried at the beginning of the financial literacy teaching process with the concept of giving our kids too much autonomy over their money. This is understandable because that is what we do as parents — we worry. We’ll worry when our kids go on their first dates, drive their first car, head off to college. Ultimately, we know we must raise kids to the best of our ability and trust them to make smart choices by giving them experience with those choices. We’ve all learned our own financial lessons by handling money. Advice is good, but real world experience is the best teacher. By not talking to your kids about money, you’ll miss the chance to engage with them in these ultra-important teaching moments. you don’t want money to move into the realm of taboo topic, which can lead to misunderstandings and, worse, financial illiteracy when they get older. Talking to them about money doesn’t guarantee money smarts but not doing so carries tremendous risk. you also can use the upcoming back-to-school insanity to further your financial literacy lessons. Hallelujah! School will be here sooner than we think! Over the course of the summer, add a back-to-school jar or have them paste some items they want on their save jar to help them visualize their goal. This will help remind them to put their allowance money in their save jars and, hopefully, some lemonade stand profits, too. Make sure that they understand that they are going to have to pay for any of their back-to-school wants. This may help them avoid frivolous spending over the summer. Stay cool and make it a money smart summer. John Lanza is the creator of the award-winning Money Mammals DVD and Joe the Monkey Saves for a Goal picture book. role reversal WHen THe cHIld becOMes THe caregIver

............................. by dan sHaFFer

i

t’s not something we like to think about, but the fact is more and more of us will eventually be caring for our aging parents. A study by MetLife found that nearly 10 million adult children over the age of 50 are caregivers for their parents. Those numbers are growing as America’s population grows older. It’s difficult to watch the effects of time on our parents. Age robs them of their physical strength, mental capacity and, sometimes, emotional stability. They may not seem like the same person who was there for us through most of our lives. And now that the roles are reversed, family caregivers — at a time in their lives when they should be looking forward to their own retirement — can quickly feel overwhelmed, exhausted, depressed, resentful and angry. The MetLife study also found that adult children 50 and older who work and provide care to a parent are more likely to have fair or poor health than those who do not provide care to their parents.

For those reasons, experts say it’s important for family caregivers to have a solid support system in place. All this month, our team at ABC Action news is partnering with experts to tackle the issues involved with parenting your parents. How and when you should have the conversation with your parents about moving in with family or into

assisted living? Why and when is it best to create a power-of-attorney, a living will and other legal documents? How and when to address the issue of your parent’s finances and bills? Our experts will focus on your every day concerns, too, like driving, cooking and household chores. What are your options to keep them safe and be respectful of their emotional need for independence? it’s an idea born from emails and letters from viewers, and to be perfectly frank, plenty of conversations in our employee break room.

The y’s Silver Sneakers programs include exercise classes to increase muscular strength and range of movement and daily living skills. Handheld weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball are offered for resistance. A chair is used for seated and/or standing support. The y also has programs specific to participants with arthritis, MS, joint issues, fibromyalgia and special movement needs. Participants use the y’s pools for shallow-water flexibility enhancement, addressing cardiovascular, strength and endurance conditioning.

in working on this project, we found three universal truths. First, it’s essential to be aware of our parents’ current health. The reality can be very different than the one they present to us. Second, know what help options are available – whether it’s housing, health, finances or lifestyle changes. And third, it’s best to make these parenting decisions before there is a crisis.

your parents don’t even know how to swim! The y also has Tai Chi, yoga, zumba and line dancing!

The Tampa Bay area y is an example of the options available. it offers a variety of classes and support groups to help families cope with aging loved ones. “it’s so important for the caregiver to maintain their own physical and mental health,” says Maureen Chiodini, assistant vice president of wellness at the Tampa y. “The y offers many classes and programs to help both the caregiver and their loved one.”

“Silver Sneakers offers something for everyone. it is a fun, energizing program that helps older adults take greater control of their health by encouraging physical activity and offering social events. it helps unlock the door to greater independence and a healthier life,” adds Chiodini. Allowing your loved one to participate in organized classes and group activities gives you — the caregiver — a much-needed break. “Caregiver sanity is something we take very seriously,” says Chiodini, pointing to their support groups and offerings to help you parent your parents. Dan Shaffer is the morning and noon news anchor for ABC Action News.

devil made me do it

.........................

by paul guZZO

which meant i had to bear hug him with both arms as he squirmed and yelled. it was embarrassing. no one wants to have that child. But i did. Then he made up for all of his terrible behavior by turning his baptism into one of the most memorable and hilarious in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. As the priest slowly strolled toward my son, who was howling so angrily over being restrained that he sounded like Dustin Hoffman’s character during the torture scene of The Marathon Man, he began screaming no and flinching away from the priest. The priest was doing everything he could to keep a straight face. Then, when the priest doused my son with holy water, he shrieked, “Dada, it hurts,” as though it was burning the skin off his flesh. The priest actually lost it, covering his mouth to stifle his laughs. When my son repeated this act as the holy oil was rubbed on his head, the priest smiled and said, “i think this child needs a little more,” and doused him a second time. Unbelievable? yes. True? Unfortunately, yes.

M

even a bapTIsM Wasn’T enOugH

y wife and i have often joked that we think our youngest son is the devil. He creates chaos everywhere he goes — walking from one end of the house to the other, tossing toys wherever he pleases, climbing the counters and emptying our glasses from their cabinets, sneaking into the bathroom and throwing our toothbrushes into the toilet, sleeping an average of three hours a night, yet never tiring, slipping Visine into my beer and hiding the toilet paper.

of him as the devil is 100 percent true; he was possessed. His baptism turned into an exorcism. Every baptism has that one nightmare of a kid, the baby who yells and screams the entire time, thus ruining the occasion for the other families. That was my son.

if i didn’t have a grounded sense of my own self worth, i would believe that my 2-year-old son was the Antichrist, but there is no way i am important enough to claim the historic distinction of fathering evil incarnate. However, while my youngest son may not be the ultimate evil, he may be a close second.

He was everywhere! in typical fashion, he refused to be held, running throughout the church during the short service, climbing over and under pews as i was in hot pursuit and tossing books over his head to slow me down like the bad guy in the old Spy Hunter video game would dispense oil slicks. When I would finally get hold of him, he’d quickly wiggle from my arms again. He even managed to break a few of the prayer candles. in a scramble, i hid the evidence, perhaps sealing my fate of afterlife in hell. But at least i’ll have my evil son to keep me company.

On June 1, we finally had him baptized. On that same day, we learned that our assessment

in order for him to be baptized, i had to try to get him to remain still for just a few moments,

Adding fuel to the belief that my son was possessed and the baptism exorcised the demon – moments after the ceremony ended, he calmed down! He stopped wiggling so we could take family photos. He took a long nap, sleeping so soundly that we were able to transfer him from his car seat to his stroller and into a restaurant. When he did wake, he sat pleasantly in his booster chair and ate his meal, never once screaming to be taken from his chair so he could race around the restaurant as he normally would. Just in case any of this doesn’t seem completely unbelievable, here is the kicker. When we returned home, my son picked up the television remote control, turned on a Christian rock music channel and began to dance! i wish i was making this up. it happened. My son really did have the devil in him! Unfortunately, it seems the exorcism was only temporary. After i bathed him, washing away the holy water and oil, the devil reentered his body. As i sat in the living room and played with who i thought was my new angelic son, he picked up a block, slammed it into my face and laughed at me. We should never have bathed him. Oh well, we tried. i guess Darth Vader was right. you cannot underestimate the power of the dark side. There is evil in my son. Be afraid. Be very afraid. your

child’s

schedule is packed with swimming, camp and family vacations, it can be a challenge to find time for reading. But don’t hit pause on daily reading just because school’s out. Here are some ways to make reading a natural part of the summer fun. Explore your library. Check out books and magazines that your kids haven’t seen before. Many libraries have summer reading programs, book clubs and reading contests for even the youngest borrowers. There are often incentives, such as a free book upon completing their summer reading lists. young kids will feel extra grown-up checking out books with their own library card. Read on the road. Going on a long car trip? Make sure the back seat is stocked with favorite reads. When you’re not at the wheel, you can read the books aloud. Get some audiobooks and listen to them during drive time. Make your own books. Pick one of your family’s favorite parts of summer — whether it’s baseball, ice cream, vacation or the pool — and have your child draw or cut out related pictures

from magazines and catalogs. Paste the pictures onto paper to make a book. Then encourage your child to write text for each page. A younger child can dictate the story to you. When you’re done, read the book together. Keep in touch. Kids don’t have to go away to write about summer vacation. Even if your family stays home, you can encourage your child to send postcards, letters or emails to friends and relatives. Ask a relative to be your child’s pen pal and encourage a weekly exchange of letters, postcards or emails. Keep up the reading rituals. Even if everything else changes during the summer, keep up the reading routines already in place at your house. Read with your kids every day — whether it’s just before bedtime or under a shady tree on a lazy afternoon. And don’t forget to take a book to the beach! Just brush the sand off the pages! Savor the series. it’s common for kids to become book lovers for life after getting hooked on a series. And there are lots of good ones that keep kids hungry for the next installment (ivy and Bean, Judy Moody for beginning readers, Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson series for middle graders; and Hunger Games, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Twilight for older teens).

While it’s never too late to start reading, many studies show that the earlier parents engage their children in reading, even reading to toddlers and preschoolers, the better. With an estimated 43 percent of children in America not being school ready when they enter kindergarten, reading from an early age can help to solve this lack of literacy that plagues our students in a number of ways. According to Dr. J. Richard Gentry, author of Raising Confident Readers, reading aloud and doing activities like reading-around-the-room can start as early as 3 or 4 months of age. neuroscientists tell us that because a baby’s brain is malleable and will triple in size during the first year of life, exercises like this will help your toddler flex the mental muscle and grow their cognitive development. Books truly have the power to benefit our kids in a number of ways, including logical thinking, mastery of language, better communication skills and enhanced concentration and discipline. The best thing parents can do to nurture these skills is by immersing them in reading and books. For more information, visit www.KidsHealth.org © 19952013. The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth.

mind over body

Beach days, boating and barbecues — summertime is here. Then you pull out the shorts and swimsuits, and, lo and behold, they no longer button or fit the way they did the last time you had them on! TV and radio constantly tell you about the latest fat burning, belly blasting, lose weight while you sleep products that will help you drop 10 pounds in the blink of an eye. How are we to know who or what is accurate?

THe key TO WeIgHT lOss success

Moms always say, “if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.” The same advice applies for weight loss products and providers. There is a healthy (and unhealthy) way to lose weight. Crash diets, unproven, untested “miracle” products and other drastic behaviors that create rapid fluctuations in weight are very damaging to your body. From increased insulin resistance, which makes weight loss progressively harder over time, to increased risk of heart disease, the shortterm results are severely outweighed by the lasting negative impacts on your health.

by dr. cesar lara

So armed with all this medical information, what’s a girl to do? Just what you do with any other goal you set. you begin with the end in mind. What is my overall goal? When can i realistically achieve it? With weight loss, it’s important to begin your journey knowing that you are making a lifestyle change. Once you are consistently making healthier decisions and living life through a series of optimal health behaviors, you will find yourself in a place of balance and well-being for many years to come. However, arriving at this new lifestyle is a journey. Much like any journey, there are three key areas of focus.

Identify Your Destination

The first step is identifying your weight loss goal and believing you can achieve it. For many of us, the biggest obstacle isn’t genetics or the amount of weight we want to lose. instead, it’s overcoming our mental state which often says, “i have failed before, i will fail this time” or “i don’t deserve to be happy and healthy.” We also have commercial “weight loss successes” in our face all day with bodies that we can’t possibly identify with. (Don’t forget. They have private chefs and personal trainers). To conquer this self-defeating attitude, arm yourself with daily affirmations. in a quiet place, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and visualize what you want. “i want to be a size 6. i want to weigh 140 pounds. i want to be healthy. i want to feel more energy. i want to feel sexier. i want to be more successful.” Repeat your mantra five or six times during your morning shower and again in the late afternoon.

At first, this exercise may be challenging but continue to repeat your mantra. in four to six days, it will feel easier, even natural. This feeds positive thoughts to your brain, which sets positive actions in motion. Soon the picture of your destination will be clear in your mind.

Have a Plan for your Journey

As with any journey, there will be obstacles, detours and challenges. Having a plan helps ensure that you are able to stay on course and reach your destination. The same is true with your journey to living a life of health and happiness. We all know that “life happens” but with a well-constructed plan, you are setting yourself up for success from the beginning. Once you know where you are headed with your new lifestyle, one of your first stops will probably be the grocery store. it is much easier to stay on track when you have planned your meals and purchased needed ingredients. That will really help with mood eating. you know the question, “What am i in the mood for today?” The answer is usually something that will sabotage your healthy day. When you go to the store, most of your shopping will be in the perimeter of the store. Those center aisles hold the processed food with preservatives and fat – not what we want in our new journey toward optimal health. Plan in color – a rainbow of color on your plate makes mealtime appetizing, pleasant and healthy! Planning your meals, supplemental nutrition, exercise and even reflection time will help you stay focused and moving towards your weight loss goals.

Find Resources for Support

We all face frustration and fear as we reach our most vulnerable moments in our path to a healthier lifestyle. it’s at these moments that our support system is the most critical and can help us return to our path. You may find support in your spouse, friends, walking/exercise groups or other social circles. When times get tough, these support systems will provide opportunities for people that care to help you stay focused and motivated. There are also people who may think they are being of help to you when they say, “Just one bite won’t hurt” or “i read an article the other day that says it’s healthier to be overweight.” it’s during these times that we need to hit the playback button and repeat our mantra. Do not allow other people’s doubt to live in your mind. Stay strong! Bottom line, your new lifestyle can be colorful, fun, filled with music and joy and all the things that make you smile. Just stay on course and stay strong to look better, feel better and become the best you! you won’t even cringe when it’s time to put on the swimsuit! Extraordinary woman

.......................................

by angela ardOlInO

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.

At age 4, Vicky Westra emigrated to Tampa from Cuba with her family with the goal of starting a new life and living the American dream. Fast forward, Westra is a college graduate, wife, mother and community activist who is helping others achieve the dream. She met husband Pier by accident, literally. She had a minor accident and he was her claims adjuster. They recently celebrated 26 years of marriage. The couple adopted their daughter from a Romanian orphanage when she was 2. At age 4, she was diagnosed with autism. “We struggled for many years with our daughter’s behavior and went through the many stages of uncertainty and grief about the diagnosis and her future until our journey brought us to the point of completely embracing our daughter just where she was at as well as the diagnosis.” in 2006, Westra left a senior level role at Tampa Electric and started a coffee company. in 2007, she founded Art for Autism, a 501(c) (3) social enterprise, to develop programs and services for people diagnosed with autism. in 2010, these two organizations came together to form Artistas Cafe. The cafe serves premium gourmet beverages and foods — that is where the similarities to other cafes end. All the team members at Artistas have autism. Over the past two years, our focus has been on developing a replicable training model that will teach team members social, communication and multitasking skills and improve their selfconfidence. Through a partnership with USF St. Petersburg, Westra has developed an assessment tool that validates the significant growth experienced by Artistas team members. Westra recently opened a second café at Jabil Circuits in St. Petersburg and will be opening three additional locations by the end of the year. in addition, Artistas is launching a culinary program using the same training methodology as the cafe program. Her long term goal is to serve individuals with autism globally.

What do you think is the secret to your family’s success?

Unconditional love. Our daughter Gabbi taught us that. When she came to us, she didn’t fit our model of the daughter we had always envisioned.

it was challenging. After experiencing a lot of pain, i realized that i truly wanted to love Gabbi for the wonderful being that she already is and be happy right where she’s at on the journey. it was a pivotal point in our relationship and allowed me to see so many positives about her talents and abilities as well as the diagnosis of autism. That lesson in unconditional love has helped us as a family to live a more joyous life.

What is your biggest fear?

To not live life to my fullest potential. i believe that everyone was brought here with a purpose and mine has become clearer and clearer.

What advice would you give to other women?

Live your purpose. As women, sometimes we get caught up in what people want for us versus what we want for ourselves. Some women are called to be stay-at-home mothers and others are called to be CEOs — whatever you were called to be and do live and do it fully!

What is your proudest moment?

We have created an environment at Artistas of acceptance and unconditional love. For many of our new team members, it’s something that they have seldom or never had. On the first day that they enter our program, we let them know that they are wonderful right where they are and we are going to give them the skills and abilities to discover that for themselves.

What is your biggest achievement?

The Artistas program has not only been transformational for all the team members but for me and our whole team. Developing a program that has already transformed lives and has the potential to positively touch so many people around the world is very rewarding! However, i still feel like my biggest achievement is yet to be.

What makes you happy?

My goal is to find joy in whatever I am doing. i love the times when i am just hanging out at home or at the beach with Pier and Gabbi, when i am at work with my wonderful team, with extended family during Sunday dinners or just going to dinner or hanging out with friends. it’s all good!

How do you relax and take time for yourself?

My favorite thing to unwind is to go to the beach and sit under an umbrella with a good book. There is nothing better than being by the water. it’s so cleansing and refreshing!

What kind of message would you like to give women in the area or in this community?

Embrace your own power. i know so many amazing women and I find that the thing we as women have in common is that we sometimes don’t see the powerful, unique and talented beings that we are. We either give our power to someone else or criticize ourselves for not doing a good enough job in one or all areas of our life. i take this very personally now because i see that in order to teach empowerment to our children or our employees, we must first live it. In other words, our actions speak louder than our words.

What else would you like to share with our readers?

One of the lessons that i learned with our daughter is to not make your happiness dependent upon what your children (or anyone else for that matter) are doing and not doing. Another lesson i have learned is to tell your child how wonderful they are and to envision all the possibilities for them. Since Gabbi was little we’ve told her that she could achieve anything that she wanted. We even created stories around professions because i subscribe to the philosophy that we can create our own reality. The steps are to first identify what we want, second believe that it’s possible and then take inspired action to achieve it.

How do you enjoy or draw information from the magazine? Sometimes when we have a challenge in our life, whether it’s with our children, at work or in our family life, we are so close to the situation that we don’t see a way around it. Magazines like Tampa Bay Parenting and other inspirational sources help us to expand our viewpoint, give us new ideas or just help us to be thankful for our own lives.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids in Tampa Bay? Our favorite place to visit is the beach. We also enjoy the public parks (Gabbi’s favorite thing is still going on the swing), Busch Gardens, MOSi and the Florida Aquarium.

Corbett Prep Steps Up to Make a Difference Corbett Preparatory School of IDS recently sent the first of several planned shipments of gently worn school shirts to over 130 students at L’Ecole du Village in Haiti. L’ Ecole du Village is a community school on ile-A-Vache, a small island south of the mainland of Haiti, that serves students from Prekindergarten through fifth grade. Ile-A-Vache is accessible only via a half-hour ride by motorboat so supplies are scarce and the school system struggles to meet students’ needs. When Head of School Joyce Burick Swarzman heard of the school’s needs she immediately saw an opportunity for the school and its families to show support. Since the school had recently changed its name to honor Cornelia Corbett and the Corbett family, longtime advocates and supporters of the school, the shirts with the old name needed a new home and Corbett Prep families were happy to help. “What a joy to be able to share and make connections with others around the world,” says Swarzman. “This is just the beginning.”

Carrollwood Day School Athletes Back from UK Carrollwood Day School’s varsity boys soccer team recently returned from the United Kingdom after a weeklong soccer adventure. The CDS team faced various matches against players from another international Baccalaureate school in Manchester, England. in addition to playing soccer, the team toured various historical sites during their visit and even took part in a match on Manchester United’s practice fields. Prior to going, the team’s coach Jim Harte articulated their main goals. “We hope to gain immeasurable value from both the soccer and cultural aspects of the trip,” he commented. Go to the school’s website, www.carrollwooddayschool.org to learn more about CDS’s various academic and sports programs.

Local Kids Receive Summer Camp Scholarships Recently, Friends of Tampa Recreation awarded 260 area children scholarships to attend summer camp. “Every child deserves to go to summer camp — to make new friends, to learn new skills and to be mentored by a caring adult,” says Kitty Lyons, executive director of Friends of Tampa Recreation. “This year the demand for financial assistance was so much higher than it was last year. it’s part of our mission to provide assistance to those who need it most and to ensure the city’s recreational programs are accessible to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.” Since the Summer Camp Scholarship Program began in 2010, 730 children have received scholarships to attend camp. The scholarship program is available for children ages 5-14 who are enrolled with the city of Tampa’s Parks and Recreation programs and who have qualified for the National School Lunch Program. The program funds a family’s first child at 100 percent and each sibling thereafter up to 75 percent. in addition to children ages 5-14, Friends supports a similar teen program offered at multiple recreation centers. Go to www.friendsoftamparec.org to learn more.

Besides a change in leadership, the Children’s Board has also welcomed a change of scenery with a new look for its online presence. For several months, the organization has worked closely with a web design firm to launch a new website with the main goal of making information quickly accessible to the public. Budding Innovator Has Fashionable Head for Business For Brylee Beckerman, selecting a headband has become serious business. That’s because the 11-year-old has designed and launched her own business of interchangeable headbands, featuring 40-plus ribbon styles and accessories. Through her company, Infinity Headbands, Brylee hopes to make fashionable hair accessories for little girls more accessible and eliminate the tangled mess and frustration of drawers of headbands that either break or soil easily. At 7, while attending second grade at Shore Acres Elementary, Brylee had her big idea. St. Petersburg’s own Brylee Beckerman may be on her way Mom AnnDee recalls that day. “She came to me to becoming the next big fashion design sensation with her one morning while i was getting ready. i was interchangeable headbands. pulling out my own clustered bin of headbands and that is when she had an idea to create what we call the Infinity Headband,” she says. “I immediately loved the idea because that meant not only would we cut down on all of her cluttered headbands, but i could get rid of all of mine as well.” Brylee proposed a headband with washable ribbon attachments that were easy to change to match any outfit. With the help of her mom to attach the ribbons on the headbands with Velcro bought from a local craft store, Brylee began wearing them to school. Soon, her classmates were showing interest in the fashion accessories for themselves and she developed 20 ribbons and stylish embellishments. In July 2012, she, her mom and aunt Ashley Fox launched Infinity Headbands through their company Ambrosia Designs. Though the family has since relocated to Jacksonville, Infinity Headbands are still made in the bay area. in less than a year, the hair accessories are now sold in 20 gift boutiques in the southeast and available online at www.infinityheadbands.com. Brylee’s advice to other young entrepreneurs with an idea they’d like to test? “Make a prototype and take it to school or ask neighborhood friends what they think about it. if they like it, then start a business,” she says.

All Children’s Telethon Celebrates 30 Years All Children’s Hospital recently announced that its 2013 telethon raised more than $4 million for the region’s referral center for specialized pediatric care. This year’s telethon theme, 30 years of Miracles, celebrated the annual tradition of raising funds for the hospital. Since its first broadcast in 1984, more than $84 million has been raised through the telethon, with every dollar staying local to support All Children’s programs and facilities. During the 11½-hour broadcast, which aired June 1-2, media personalities from WFLA-TV news Channel 8 highlighted the stories of several families and patients of All Children’s. The hospital, whose mission includes a strong commitment to teaching and research, is part of the Children’s Miracle network Hospitals, an alliance of premier hospitals for children, and a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, the first U.S. hospital outside the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area to achieve that distinction. Area Scout Named a National Young Woman of Distinction Congratulations to Jamila Blake, a 2012 graduate of Wharton High. The young woman from new Tampa has been named by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) as one of its 2013 national young Women of Distinction. The designation is conferred every other year by GSUSA on 10 young women who have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award – the highest and most prestigious award in Girl Scouting. Each of this year’s recipients, including Jamila, completed Gold Award projects that demonstrated extraordinary leadership, had a measurable and sustainable impact, and addressed a local challenge that related to a national and/or global issue. Jamila’s personal journey toward the national young Woman of Distinction recognition began in the seventh grade when she was introduced to invisible Children, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of the youth of war-torn northern Uganda. She was immediately inspired to bring to light the heinous crimes of Dictator Joseph Kony and the need for education and rebuilding of Uganda. “i am so grateful to be among a group of such amazing girls,” says Jamila. “i’m also very excited for the amount of exposure for Joseph Kony and the plight of the Ugandans beyond my community.” Working in partnership with invisible Children, Jamila started the Global Outreach Club at Wharton, which focused on promoting awareness and aid for children in need locally and globally. She also coordinated various events such as hosting invisible Children screenings and bringing a student guest speaker from Uganda to Wharton. Jamila Blake, left, and Anna Maria Chavez, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, at the 2013 national CEO Summit in Phoenix.

Jamila is a freshman at the University of Delaware, studying wildlife conservation.
