We help hardworking farmers nourish our growing world.
That’s our promise. As the world’s population continues to increase, the demand for affordable food becomes greater and greater. The Mosaic Company helps the world grow the food it needs by providing farmers with essential phosphate and potash crop nutrients. Today, more than half of the phosphate fertilizer used by farmers in the U.S. is produced right here in Florida. Our connection to farmers and farming begins here, too. Mosaic farms approximately 6,000 acres of Florida citrus, and thousands of additional acres of formerly mined, reclaimed land are used for cattle grazing, row crops, sod farms and tree farms. More than 3,000 Mosaic employees call Florida home. We are committed and honored to be stewards of our agricultural lands in Florida, and to help farmers put food on the table for millions of families – including yours. PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY THIS SUMMER
QUICK TIPS BY LAURA BYRNE
Use broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB protection) sunscreen SPF 30 or higher. Use enough sunscreen and apply generously. Apply at least 15 minutes before going outside and use a lip balm with SPF 30. Avoid the peak sun intensity hours, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., , when UV light is strongest. Wear protective clothing, including hats, sunglasses and long sleeves. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours to remain protected or immediately after swimming or excessively sweating. Seek shade sunwise).
O
h how I wish I could turn back time! I remember my parents always reminding me as a kid to slather on the sunscreen. The older I got the more invincible I thought I was. I traded in the sunscreen for the tanning oil and, sometimes, the beach for the tanning bed. It’s perhaps one of my deepest regrets, especially now that I am a mother. It’s not so much the wrinkles I regret, but the fact I significantly upped my risk for skin cancer for what I thought was the sake of beauty. The statistics are alarming. It’s estimated one person dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, every hour in the United States. Melanoma is not an older person’s disease. I was stunned to learn it’s the second most common cancer among adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15-29, according to St. Joseph’s Hospital. It is also estimated that one or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence more than doubles the chance or developing melanoma later in life. “Teaching children important habits now — like seeking shade, applying sunscreen and wearing protection clothing — can ensure that these habits become routine as they grow older. Any new mole on a tween/teen should be examined
by a dermatologist,” says Dr. Panayiotis Vasiloudes, a pediatric dermatologist with St. Joseph’s Hospital.
BABIES Keep your infant out of direct sunlight and plan
your daily walk in the morning or late afternoon. If you must be outside, keep your baby in the shade or under a cover. Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses are not only adorable on little ones they also offer sun protection. The American Academy of Pediatrics says it is OK to apply a small amount of sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside if there is no way to avoid the sun. If you are going swimming, dress your baby in UPF (Ultraviolet Protective Factor) swimwear. If you are searching for the best sunscreen for your family, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently released its 2014 Sunscreen Guide, which lists 149 sunscreens that meet its criteria of effectiveness and least amount of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals. Keep in mind, a high SPF does not mean greater protection. So avoid sunscreens with SPFs of
whenever
possible
(be
more than 50, which may give you a false sense of security. Look for SPFs between 15 and 50. The EWG also discourages the use of spray sunscreens due to the risk of inhalation of the product. You also can limit your exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals by avoiding bug repellant/sunscreen combos. You have to reapply sunscreen more often. If you must use bug repellant, buy it separately and apply it first.

BY LISSETTE CAMPOS & KRISTIN MOORE
PEDIATRIC SLEEP DISORDERS
FAQs Why is it important to diagnose? Children who have prolonged sleep disordered breathing (longer than four months) and not due to an acute illness, suffer from decreased quality of life. Behavioral changes such as hyperactivity, loss of concentration and cognitive function have led to the diagnosis of ADD in children. In addition, children can have cognitive and learning disabilities, which can extend into the teen years. More importantly, diagnosis and treatment leads to a significant improvement in quality of life. What is sleep disordered breathing? It is a characterization of sleep patterns in children, which include snoring, restless sleeping, awakening at night, obstructive events (apnea), behavioral changes during the day (hyperactivity, lethargy, increased daytime fatigue) as well as difficulty in arousal and difficulty in getting a child to sleep. The most common cause of sleep disordered breathing in children is an enlarged adenoid and/or tonsils.
How can I tell if my child has sleep disordered breathing? Parents will usually notice this when families are together on vacation and the child is sleeping in the same room. Frequently, the child will exhibit signs of restless sleep, tossing and turning throughout the night, waking in the middle of the night (usually after midnight), sleep walking, bedwetting and tiredness during the day. Other children who have to sleep in the same bedroom will usually complain about not being able to sleep well because of the noise of snoring, pauses in breathing or their bedmate sleeping restlessly and pushing them out of bed. What should I do if I suspect my child has disorder? If your child exhibits signs of sleep disordered breathing, talk with your pediatrician about a referral to an ENT. The ENT will ask you about symptoms and examine your child. If the physical exam matches the medical history, further studies or treatment may be offered at that time. For some small children, adenoidectomy alone may be sufficient to alleviate the symptoms. However, in most cases, tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy is the treatment of choice. There are several methods. Your doctor will choose the method best suited for your child to make the best recovery possible
Whether you are camping or staying at a hotel, you may be in close quarters with your family this summer. This may give you an opportunity to take note of how your children are breathing when they sleep. Do they sound a little like Darth Vader? Is their breathing loud, interrupted or labored? These could all be signs of sleep disordered breathing, according to Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists. Dr. Thomas Andrews describes sleep disordered breathing as a characterization of sleep patterns in children, which include snoring, restless sleeping, waking at night and apnea. Medical experts add that it also can affect a child’s behavior — hyperactivity, lethargy and increased daytime fatigue. Dr. Andrews says that can often lead to a misdiagnosis of attention deficit disorder (ADD) in children. In addition, experts say children who have prolonged sleep disordered breathing can have cognitive and learning disabilities, which can extend into the teenage years. More importantly, they say the benefits of diagnosis and treatment can lead to a significant improvement in quality of life. Experts point out that greater than 80% of children who have documented sleep disordered breathing will benefit from long term increases in cognitive ability, behavioral stabilization and a more even temperament. Prolonged bedwetting has also been associated with problems with sleeping. A child with this disorder may exhibit restless sleep, tossing and turning in bed, waking in the middle of the night, sleep walking and exhaustion during the day. Parents take note – experts say it’s a behavior that can also affect siblings. Dr. Andrews explains that siblings who have to sleep in the same bedroom with the child having difficulties will usually complain about not being able to sleep well due to snoring, pauses in breathing from the child affected or their bedmate sleeping restlessly. Doctors say the most common cause of sleep disordered breathing in children is an enlarged adenoid and/or tonsils. If it’s left untreated, they say it could affect a child’s cognitive function and behavior and could also significantly decrease their quality of life. However, Dr. Andrews says while snoring is a sign not all snoring is a sign of sleep disordered breathing. “Snoring is very common in children, and in fact, it is prevalent in about 12% of children in the general population. However, 1%-3% of children will exhibit not only snoring, but sleep disordered breathing,” Dr. Andrews says. Lissette Campos is director of community affairs and Kristin Moore is special projects producer for ABC Action News.

t’s summertime, which typically means video games, lazy days, vacations and summer camps. However, it is important not to forget to spend quality time during the summer with your family.
Summer break is a great opportunity to spend time with family. Oftentimes the school year is hectic — homework, extracurricular activities and busy parent/child schedules. Summer provides a chance to have some family fun and improve bonding with your child. Spending quality time can feel like a daunting task because parents want to get it right. Just remember, most one-on-one time is special time in your child’s eyes, no matter the activity. So what does quality time with your children mean? In the time you spend with your child, is there a portion of time where you can talk with them? Do you remember to listen to them? Are you having fun? For example, movies may seem great, but they do not provide time to talk and bond with your child. Perhaps before or after the movie you can get some ice cream and talk. If you want to play video games with your child, have lunch together too to open a dialogue or keep the conversation going.
memories after all! Have fun, relax and just enjoy your child’s company.
Give Back to the Community One great way to spend time with your family over the summer is by giving back to the community. Research has shown that volunteering with your family can provide valuable life skills. Ask your kids what areas interest them and search for the best volunteer opportunity. You could collect food for a local food pantry, buy extra back-to-school supplies for a local drive, draw pictures together for a local children’s hospital or clean out your closets to donate to your favorite charity. There also are opportunities for families to volunteer at many community events and facilities.
Vacations and Staycations Enjoy some of the local attractions together as a reward for good behavior or good grades. Some families even invest in an annual pass for fun all summer long. Other ideas include summer festivals, a day trip, bowling, skating, or putt-putt golf, to name a few.
Whatever activity you are doing, remember to really listen to your children in your time together. They might want to share what happened to them in camp, the latest gossip about their friends or talk about a difficult topic. Be sure they know you are listening to them.
If a staycation doesn’t seem appealing, spending time with extended family in other cities, states or countries can provide a great opportunity to bond with your child during a car or plane ride. Whether you are playing I Spy or a card game, every minute you spend with your child counts.
Keep in mind that this quality time should also be fun! You’re building

For more physical activities, go outside and play a basketball with your child, throw a football around, kick a soccer ball, dance, go swimming or find another sport that interests them. A family picnic on the beach may be the perfect setting for physical activity and bonding time. Not a beach fan? Try camping or roasting marshmallows with your little ones (everyone loves a good roasted marshmallow). Run around and have a water balloon fight. If your child is older or you have a teen, consider letting them choose what physical activity they enjoy. A family day at your local gym or Y is also a great way to spend family time together and stay in shape. Rainy days and days that are too hot may send you indoors. Fear not. Physical activities can happen indoors too. Many older children or teens may enjoy activities such as indoor skydiving, ice skating, roller skating, yoga or indoor rock climbing. You could even create fun family competitions at indoor Grand Prix places or indoor mini golf. Just don’t forget to let your child choose the activity sometimes. Children have so much in their lives that they do not control – school schedule, homework, summer activities. Because of this, it’s important to make sure you blend in what they want to do too. Give them a list of reasonable family activities and let them choose which activities they want to do on certain days. If you have multiple children, you could let them decide as a group what to do or you can let each child pick their activity for any given day or week.
child over the summer it is vital to keep your child mentally and physically active. Activities that encompass both mental and physical aspects are great for the well-being of your child and can improve your parent-child relationship. Remember that children are developing mentally, emotionally and physically throughout their years. They need activities that enrich their lives, but also to help them connect with others. The parent-child relationship is the first place for children to learn social skills and how to interact appropriately with others. Reading together, challenging your children to fun games (not just video games) and new adventures are just a few ways to keep your child mentally active. You can keep your child mentally stimulated by continuing to introduce them to fun, educational experiences, such as a visit to a MOSI, the Glazer Children’s Museum, the Florida Aquarium or Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Parks and playgrounds offer a free place to stay active and libraries are a free way to expand the mind. In fact, many libraries have free summer events and classes.
Remember that discovering what your children enjoy and spending that quality time with them is the top priority this summer. Continue learning their interests and engaging with them while keeping in mind that making memories doesn’t have to involve a lot of extravagance and planning. Memories are sometimes created by the simplest things. This could mean blowing bubbles together or making strawberry pancakes. Even though you may think that the four-day, three-night trip to a theme park would be your child’s most memorable experience, you may be surprised to find out their what I liked best about my summer experience was something simpler, like family pizza night. MANAGING THE HIGH COST
W
BY AMY BELL
hen you look into the innocent eyes of your sweet child, you know she is absolutely priceless. But if you had to put a price tag on her, how much would it be? About $250,000, according to USDA research.
The USDA estimates it will cost middle-income parents a whopping $241,080 (or $301,970 with inflation), on average, to raise a child born in 2012 until the age of 18. That mind-blowing amount has mushroomed by 3 percent since 2011 — and it doesn’t even include the exorbitant cost of college.
Luckily, you can off-set these extraordinary costs by signing up for an employer-sponsored flexible spending account (FSA). These accounts allow you to set aside pre-tax money to pay for qualified child care expenses for kids under the age of 13 — so it essentially gives you access to tax-free money. In the end, an FSA can slash your overall child care costs by up to a third.

spending program available to you. And of course, parents should update their withholdings to maximize their take-home pay.
Take advantage of tax breaks. Fortunately, Uncle Sam gives parents some muchneeded financial relief. For each dependent child under the age of 19 (or full-time dependent student 24 or younger), parents received a reduction of taxable income of $3,900 in 2013.

If you meet certain eligibility requirements, the child tax credit also reduces your tax bill up to $1,000 per child. You can also tap into medical mileage deductions, adoption credits and more. Talk to a tax professional to take full advantage of these valuable tax breaks.

Sign up for a dependent care FSA. It’s no secret that day care is phenomenally expensive — and the price climbs each and every year. In 2011, the average cost of full-time care for an infant was $4,600 to $15,000+ a year, depending on geographic location. Cha-ching!

e all strive to feel healthy, young and vibrant. Unfortunately, none of us can stop the hands of time and there comes a point in each of our lives when we no longer feel as energetic, rested and even emotionally stable as we once did. Remember your teen years? Those same hormones that drove you crazy back then are once again wreaking havoc in your body.
ageless body BALANCING HORMONES
.............................
BY LAURA BYRNE
“What’s really occurring is hormone levels are beginning to drop,” says Dr. Cesar Lara with Cesar Lara MD Weight Management, serving the Tampa Bay area. The hormones that once supported your sharp mind, youthful skin and do-anything attitude are declining. You are aging. But Dr. Lara believes we are all entitled to age gracefully and can do so with a little balance. His life’s work is dedicated to helping people find that balance in their lives through a treatment known as bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). He is essentially replacing those hormones you are losing - DHEA, estrogen, testosterone — and bringing your body back in harmony. The effects of this balance include increased energy, increased sex drive, weight loss and overall sense of well-being because your body is back in balance. Dr. Lara says other benefits proven in scientific studies show hormonal balance protects the heart, brain and bones. Bioidentical hormones are different from synthetic hormones you often see advertised on television. The “natural” hormones are called natural because they are derived from yams and soy and compounded in a pharmacy into a prescription dose designed just for you. As the word indicates, bioidentical hormones are identical to human hormones, which means your body cannot tell the difference. Since every body is different, a comprehensive blood test will determine your current hormone levels. After a thorough exam, Dr. Lara will assess your situation and tailor a therapy program unique to your needs. The hormones your body needs are primarily delivered through creams and tablets, although sometimes an injection may be necessary. Dr. Lara calls it “hormone optimization,” and the earlier you begin this optimization the more successful your outcome will be. There has been concern among some women about taking estrogen hormones due to the increased risks of breast cancer and stroke. Dr. Lara says this is the result of the Woman’s Health Initiative study, which focused on synthetic estrogen (Premarin) and progestin (Provera). There were different arms of the study, though, and this is where he says information has been misinterpreted. Dr. Lara says the arm of the study that looked at the combo of Premarin and Provera (PremPro) was discontinued because an increased risk of breast cancer was discovered. Another arm looking at the use of Premarin was discontinued due to increased incidences of stroke in older women. Dr. Lara points to a recent study that shows natural estrogen does not have the same effects and says this is why it is important to receive the right balance of bioidentical hormones. It is important when considering hormone replacement therapy, to consult with a trained medical professional. Never order hormones off the Internet. Dr. Lara and his staff are dedicated to helping you find your individual path back to balance based on your unique history, physical health and blood test.

Keep the Kids from Sliding this Summer BY CARRIE SCHEINER
P
arents line up summer camp but they should also plan for preventing the dreaded summer slide.
The summer slide is the information and skills children forget during summer break. This education slide is well-documented. And while some people are aware of the learning loss, many aren’t aware that children tend to gain weight more rapidly when they’re out of school. What can parents do to keep young brains and bodies engaged in healthy ways over the summer?
1
Journal current achievement levels. How do you know if your child is affected by summer slide if you don’t remember where they ended the year? Create a summer journal and, in the first few pages, document their end of year scholastic achievements. Were they adding and subtracting double-digit numbers? Doing long division? What were some of their vocabulary or spelling words? Throughout the summer you can track their progress and, at the least, maintain those levels – or maybe even move on to more challenging material.
2
We all want our kids to have fun during the summer, and they can. Enroll in the fun, active day camps that focus on learning through play. Toward the end of the summer, you may want to have your children attend one week of math camp and one week of reading camp as a refresher.
3
Free time that feeds the brain. Kids have a lot more free time in the summer. With fewer scheduled activities, even kids who attend a camp may have more time to hang out in the evening. How can you feed their brain during this extra time? Visit the library and check out print books, audio books, educational DVDs, and even educational computer games. Many websites offer activity ideas that you and the kids can enjoy together.
4
ACTIVE-ate the brain. Staying active exercises both the body and the brain. Just like our body needs exercise to stay healthy, so does the brain to keep those neurons firing. Encourage kids to stay active and play outside during the summer and allow only limited, scheduled times for sedentary activities such as video games or TV. Carrie Scheiner was inspired by her children to develop the Exploracise program, www.exploracise.com.

Extraordinary woman
.......................................
BY ANGELA ARDOLINO
Mastering the art of home, work and community.
A South Tampa resident, Stacy Hahn has a full life that includes her family (husband Jeff and their three boys, twins Ethan and Jackson, 8, and Aidan, 5, and two dogs, Kendall and Murphy), her work as a professor in USF’s College of Education and her Education First campaign for Hillsborough County School Board, District 6, a countywide seat. “I was fortunate to have grown up with opportunities to pursue my goals and having a good education was at the foundation for many successful outcomes in my life. I’ve spent my career ensuring that others have similar education opportunities. I’m blessed with a career that gives me a tremendous amount of satisfaction and a family that is unconditionally loving and supportive. I feel extremely fortunate to call Tampa home!”
What advice would you give to other women?
Never be afraid to fail! Maya Angelou said, “Courage allows the successful woman to fail and learn powerful lessons from the failure so that, in the end, she didn’t fail at all.” That mantra really has sustained me during the past year after I thoughtfully made a decision to launch my campaign for Hillsborough County School Board. I‘ve found that most people with a life that appears very positive can give you a list of the negative events that got them there. So what we need to remember is that failure is a lesson. It’s a chance to go in a different direction and be stronger for it. So the next time you are presented with an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and take a measured risk, don’t dismiss it outright. Instead, ask yourself, “What would I do if I weren’t afraid to fail?” Then be fearless, take a stand and go for it! You will learn things about yourself that you never imagined.
What do you think is the secret to your family’s What is your proudest moment? success? There are many things that contribute to Jeff and me having a strong family: love, respect, appreciation, shared responsibility, encouragement, faith and communication, to name a few. Most important is our commitment to our family. Jeff and I make our family our highest priority. We all face enormous demands on our time, and our family life is always threatened by competing priorities, whether or not we work outside the home. But we have learned to distinguish the important things, like spending time with our children, from the urgent things, like ever-present project deadlines and chores. We place a high priority on making memories as a family.
What is your biggest fear?
My biggest fear is not living up to my true potential. I know so many people who are at a similar place in life as I am, and it’s a place and time when you really start to question this idea of living up to potential. I used to think of it as an outcome — something written in stone the day I was born that I was supposed to become. Now I consider it a concept that changes with the ebb and flow of my life. It is, in fact, less about the results of my effort and more about the how I live my life — with authenticity, compassion and integrity. To me this is living to my true potential and something I have to strive to accomplish throughout my life.
Since I became a parent, I’ve had so many proud moments that it’s difficult to choose just one. Recently, I experienced enormous pride in my twin sons as they made their Holy Communion. Ethan and Jackson have really worked hard to understand and learn about their Catholic faith before receiving the sacrament. They have a spiritual depth that would bring joy to the heart of any parent.
What is your biggest achievement?
My biggest achievement was when I graduated from the University of Florida with my PhD in Special Education. I was the first person in my immediate family to attend college and go on to earn a higher degree. During that time in my life, I learned priceless lessons and values that have helped make me the person that I am today.
What makes you happy?
When I think about my children, Ethan, Jackson and Aidan, I think how much joy and happiness they have brought to my life. I love watching them play together and accomplish something they have been working hard to achieve. When I think about all the silly things they say and do, they really make me laugh. They are a blessing to me, and I love every moment of being their mother.
How do you relax and take time for yourself?
For me, reading is a great way to relax. When I have the opportunity to curl up with a good book, I put the rest of the world and all my stress out of my mind as I’m taken to distant places to learn about different time periods, new ideas or philosophies. I regularly read historical novels, and, right now, I’m reading Three Cups of Tea and thoroughly enjoying it. It’s a story about how education can truly change lives, which is something I strongly believe.
What message would you like to give women?
I would tell other woman don’t follow your dreams chase them! When I was contemplating running for public office last year a friend told me that if I work hard, make sacrifices and persevere, I can turn my dreams into a reality. I knew, like most women juggling many of life’s responsibilities, that I could not embark on this journey alone. In addition to my family’s support, I realize that we live in a community with many strong, independent and caring women who are all too happy to serve as a support system and help you rise above the challenges you may face when chasing a dream.
What else would you like to share ?
I work hard to be a good role model for my children and try to make a difference in my community through my work as an educator. For most of my life, I have worked as an educator with the goal of ensuring all children have the opportunity to pursue an education. My current position provides me with the opportunity to improve education through research, teaching and mentoring future educators. As a mother, I want my children to grow up in a community where they will have opportunities and thrive and reach their potential. My life’s work complements my dreams for my children, and if I am successful in improving education for all students, then not just my children but my community will prosper as well.
Who is your biggest inspiration or role model?
My role models and constant sources of inspiration are my late parents. My father and mother possessed certain qualities that I admire. They were caring, selfless, hard working, displayed good moral values and taught me important life lessons. If I’m struggling with anything, I try to think of what they would have told me. I will always honor my parents for making me what I am today.

Dunedin Blue Jays Score a Reading Homerun The Dunedin Blue Jays fourth year annual Bookin’ it to the Ballpark reading program, sponsored by TD Bank, was again a success, expanding by 116% from the previous year and reaching 772 total students in the nine participating elementary schools. Bookin’ it to the Ballpark is a six-week program that encourages consistent at-home reading habits amongst second-graders. Pinellas County schools participating in this year’s program include: Anona (Largo), Curtis Fundamental (Dunedin), Douglas L. Jamerson (St. Petersburg), GarrisonJones (Dunedin), Guardian Angels Catholic School (Clearwater), Melrose (St. Petersburg), Sutherland (Palm Harbor), and Tarpon Springs. Throughout the friendly competition among classes at each school, the students combined to score nearly 1,200 runs. To participate, students were given program-designed bookmarks, with a baseball diamond graphic. For each 20 minutes of reading, the students were awarded a base, culminating in one run with every 80 minutes of reading. In total, the students logged nearly 96,000 minutes – or 1,600 hours – of out-of-school reading during the six weeks, in addition to their other requirements as given by their respective school. As an incentive for participating, students were awarded ticket vouchers every time they scored a run. The vouchers, good for four tickets, were redeemable for one of two TD Bank Reading Nights at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. In support of the Bookin’ it to the Ballpark program, Blue Jays players, staff and mascot DJay visited the schools to read to the students, encouraging them to continue with their reading efforts. At the conclusion of the program, the winning class at each school was awarded a pizza party, courtesy of Jet’s Pizza.
Palm Harbor Troop Earns Highest Junior Girl Scout Honor Special congratulations to Girl Scout Troop 1194 from the Crystal Waters neighborhood of Palm Harbor who had been working diligently since October 2013 to complete the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn, the Bronze Award. Its members Payton Schafer, Kylie Knickerbocker, Annabelle Anderson, Bella DiGioacchino, Brooke Dalton and Katelyn Gohman created a Geo Mission team with the purpose of protecting Land, Sea and Air. These six Scouts received their awards and recognition at a Girl Scout community bridging ceremony. Requirements to earn this honor include a Girl Scout journey award, three merit badges, and a minimum of 20 hours dedicated to the project. These six scouts were able to complete all requirements. The troop has used many of its outings to educate themselves and others about the environment. Recently, members along with family and friends ventured out to Starkey Park, where they learned about native trees, shrubs and plants. They used this opportunity to spread their mission by Geo caching and leaving behind several cards, Girl Scout SWAPS, as well as talking to people along the trail. In March, the girls gathered family, friends and other volunteers at Honeymoon Island for a beach cleanup. In one hour, they had gathered over five pounds of trash. While at the beach, the girls created a documentary about their efforts, explaining the importance of cleaning up after ourselves and the damage a single piece of trash can cause to sea life. Over several weeks, the girls traveled to a local nursery and gathered over 150 Golden Rain trees to pass out at a local Girl Scout event. The girls were able to educate other Girl Scouts about the importance of planting native trees.

Local Teen a Tourette Syndrome Youth Ambassador Earlier this spring, the national Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA) hosted its seventh annual Tourette Syndrome Youth Ambassador Training Program in Washington for teens (ages 13 to 17) with (and without) Tourette Syndrome.
Kristin Moorehead of Seminole (left) and mom Rebekah visited the Capitol this spring for the Tourette Syndrome Association’s Youth Ambassador Program.
One attendee was 13-year-old Kristin Moorehead of Seminole. After completing an application and submitting an essay on her motivation to become a TSA youth ambassador, she was selected to participate in this elite training. Kristin has since returned to Florida to educate her peers and younger children, going into classrooms, schools and clubs to teach understanding, sensitivity and tolerance of TS and its symptoms while dispelling the myths and stereotypes that are often attributed to and associated with this disorder. Kristin was accompanied by her mother Rebekah, who also participated in the training.
“I am very excited to have been a part of this amazing experience,” Kristin says. “I hope to better educate my peers and have them understand a little bit more about what TS is, how it affects my daily life and maybe even bring a better understanding of other people around them. Not just with TS, but everyone.” In addition to the comprehensive training, the youth ambassadors and their families met with their local elected officials on Capitol Hill to inform them about how TS affects those living in their communities. “Along with the other two Florida youth ambassadors, I talked with the staffers of Marco Rubio, Bill Posey and Bill Nelson about issues on upcoming legislation. We asked for their support on items such as the CARE Act, which would further fund research being done for and people educating about TS,” Kristin says. The TSA youth ambassador program trains teens to advocate for themselves and for others. Youth ambassadors have found there are many personal benefits, such as learning to work as team members and developing increased confidence in public speaking. Marked by involuntary vocal sounds and physical movements called tics, Tourette Syndrome is an inherited neurological condition frequently misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Founded in 1972, the national TSA is celebrating its 42nd year as the only national, voluntary health organization for people with Tourette Syndrome. For more information about TS, call 1-888-4-TOURET or visit http://tsa-usa.org.

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida Seeks Volunteers Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) is currently seeking troop leaders, both men and women 18 or older, to serve as positive role models for girls. Troop leaders facilitate activities designed to meet the contemporary needs of girls and make a lasting impact by helping girls build courage, confidence and character. GSWCF works in close partnership with troop leaders and offers a flexible schedule of in-person and online trainings to assist them in developing their skills and learning about the Girl Scout program. In addition to troop leaders, GSWCF is seeking volunteers to fill a variety of positions. Volunteers are needed to work behind the scenes to support troop leaders or to train other volunteers. Volunteers also are needed to work directly with girls as program or camp facilitators at local Girl Scout camps. “The main reason I volunteer with Girl Scouts is because I think girls need to see how important they are to society,” says Maria Hoover. “The best thing is when a girl looks up at you and says, ‘This has been the best day ever!’ This recently happened to me while I was volunteering at one of our local day camps and words can’t describe what an impact it had on me.” GSWCF volunteer Maria Hoover guides Bella, a Brownie, through a STEM activity during STEMapalooza at Tampa’s MOSI.

Educators, Students, Parents Work to End Bullying More than 200 principals, students, parents and community members joined Pasco County Schools Superintendent of Schools Kurt Browning, district staff and school board members Alison Crumbley (chairman) and Cynthia Armstrong as part of the Together We Stand Community Youth Summit to brainstorm ways to put an end to bullying in Pasco County public schools. The opening session culminated with a performance of The Weight of Words, a short musical about the effects of bullying behavior presented by River Ridge middle and high school drama students. Summit participants then split into breakout groups based on regions of the school district to discuss the effects of poverty and links between hope, engagement and well-being and to strategize and plan for next school year’s antibullying efforts. After a lunch with community partners, attendees took part in other breakout sessions focused on developing action steps to create safer, more inclusive schools and communities. The summit ended with a panel discussion that included the superintendent, students, law enforcement representatives and a school psychologist.
