Dive into Fun this Summer at Adventure Island!
by Brie Gorecki
It’s summer in Florida, which means the heat is ON! What better way to cool off than by splashing around at a water park? One of our favorite ways to keep cool when the weather is hot is to spend the day at Adventure Island, Tampa’s island paradise. The park is chock full of thrilling waterslides, refreshing pools and family-friendly activities, and now they’ve added even more fun with the NEW Castaway Falls!
Castaway Falls is part of the water park’s largest expansion in over four decades. The new expansion includes a park-wide modernized theme, the recently opened Shaka-Laka Shores, Rapids Racer and Wahoo Remix water slides, the renovation of Captain Pete’s, popular full-service Hang Ten Tiki Bar, and new lounging chairs and cabanas.
Make a Splash at Castaway Falls!
The all-new Castaway Falls is the reimagined area of the previous Splash Attack and includes over 100 interactive play elements. This tropical-themed play area truly gives off an island vibe with its bright colors and plastic palm tree structures. It’s also a great spot for all ages to enjoy and particularly perfect for younger ones who aren’t quite yet ready for the bigger slides.
Like Splash Attack, Castaway Falls is multi-level with an array of activities to keep little ones busy. Additions include four new slides that are perfect for even the youngest thrill-seekers, several soakers to plan that perfect sneak attack, flow pipes, hose and spray jets, water curtains and tipping trough. There are also three giant tipping buckets that dump out over 1,300 gallons of water combined!
One of our favorite things about Castaway Falls is that it’s the perfect spot to park and play. The area is surrounded by tons of
lounge chairs so parents can sit back and relax while little ones splash around and get their energy out. Castaway Falls is located toward the very back of the park, away from the busier, high-traffic areas and is close to a snack bar and bathrooms. But we advise going early since chairs can get claimed fast!
More Family-Friendly Fun at Adventure Island
For even tinier water lovers, Shaka Laka Shores features twenty-five play elements and is geared toward the park’s youngest guests. What makes this area perfect for little ones is that it’s zero depth. There are a variety of interactive components and several shaded sections.
Paradise Lagoon is another favorite spot of ours for kids who are too big for Shaka Laka Shores but want something a little more challenging than Castaway Falls. Here, they can test their skills balancing on giant lily pads using a fun net climb to help them cross the pool. The bravest of thrill-seekers can splash from cliff jumps into 9,000 square feet of tropical blue water.
Of course, what would a visit to Adventure Island be without taking the plunge on one of their ten amazing water slides? Rapids Racer and Wahoo! Remix are the park’s newest slides and can accommodate younger sliders. Hop into a two-person raft on Rapids Racer to see who can splash into the finish line first! Feel the rush of competition during this side-by-side experience through nearly 600 feet of slide (minimum height 42 inches).
Wahoo! Remix features synchronized light and sound elements. This family raft ride experience gives off the ultimate party vibes as you slide through tunnels filled with bright, glowing lights and pulse-pounding music. Anyone can ride, though sliders less than 42 inches tall are required to ride with a life fest and companion who is at least 48 inches tall.
Here’s a list of other slides at the park and their minimum height requirements:
Aruba Tuba – 42 inches
Solar Vortex – 42 inches
Vanish Point – 48 inches
Colossal Curl – 48 inches
Calypso Coaster – 42 inches
Caribbean Corkscrew – 48 inches
Riptide – 42 inches
Water Moccasin – 48 inches
After a long day of sliding and splashing our way around, we love relaxing in the Rambling Bayou, the lazy river. Grab a raft and float down this half-mile trip around the park.

Where to Grab some Grub
Playing in the water all day can definitely make you work up an appetite. Fortunately, Adventure Island has plenty of spots to grab a bite or cool off with an ice-cold drink.
Surfside Café and Mango Joe's are two of our favorite spots to grab burgers, salads, barbecue and sandwiches. Snag a variety of empanadas at the Island Truck or fuel up with an afternoon snack from Colossal Snacks or Captain Pete’s.
The Hang Ten Tiki Bar is Adventure Island’s first full-service bar and one of our favorite spots to unwind. The menu features hand-crafted cocktails, local brews and a regional and international rum selection. It’s a great place for parents to kick back with a tropical cocktail while kiddos nosh on the giant Tiki Pretzel.
Splash All Day and Into the Night with Island Nights!
Now through July 26, you can stay until 8 p.m. every Friday during Island Nights! Snap fun selfies with a 360 camera, party with festive stilt performers, and get your groove on with music from dynamic DJs during family-friendly dance parties.
To purchase tickets, annual passes and fun cards, visit adventureisland.com.
Enjoy Summer Fun at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Busch Gardens, located next door to Adventure Island, is another favorite place to spend the day in Tampa Bay. While the park is known for thrilling rides (including the NEW family-friendly Phoenix Rising coaster), did you know that Busch Gardens is also one of North America’s largest zoos?
The park is home to more than 200 species, including several that are critically endangered. They’re part of fewer than two dozen facilities in the United States that have earned the Humane Certified seal from American Humane, the world’s largest certification of animal welfare. Next time you’re there, check out the 270-gallon aquarium located in the Nairobi area of the park, which helps support aquaculture research for Rising Tide Conservation.
Get Up Close to Some of the Park’s Amazing Animals with the Animal Ambassador Insider Tour
One of the best ways to learn more about the animals that call Busch Gardens home is with their Animal Ambassador Insider Tours. The Animal Ambassador Insider Tour is a fan-favorite among the park’s lineup of immersive tours and experiences. Featuring the lowest age requirement, The Animal Ambassador Insider Tour invites guests to explore how Busch Gardens Tampa Bay takes care of its renowned Animal Ambassadors with an exclusive 30-minute walking tour led by expert Animal Care Specialists.
During the tour, you'll meet and learn about various ambassador species, discovering their unique adaptations. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to interact with one or more animals, providing a memorable hands-on experience.
Go behind the scenes to learn how keepers train and work with elephants, swing over to Jungala for an insider’s view of orangutans, hop over to Kangaloom to meet some of Australia’s most iconic marsupials, the kangaroos, or visit Mayombe Reserve to participate in enrichment activities with the gorillas.
Love big cats? Find out what goes into taking care of the fastest animals in the world, the cheetahs, or learn how to care for Asia’s top predator, the tiger. Other exciting Insider Tours feature giraffes, flamingos, sloths, hippos, Aldabras (tortoises) and penguins.
Another reason we love the Animal Ambassador Insider Tours is because they’re an affordable way to upgrade your day! Prices range from $19.99 to $69.99 and can be booked online at buschgardens.com.
Certain tours will include animal interaction while some do require the use of masks to cover the face and nose, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. Make sure to visit the website for complete details before booking your tour.
Experience
Even More Fun at Busch Gardens All Year Long
Stay and play longer this summer during Busch Gardens’ Summer Nights! Through Aug. 11, the park is open later with entertainment and fireworks on select nights. Cool off inside with the park’s new ice-skating show, Rhythm of Nature, and grab an Annual Pass or Fun Card to come back for annual events such as Halloween Harvest Sept. 7 through Nov. 3, followed by Christmas Town from Nov. 15 through Jan. 5, 2025.
Visit buschgardens.com for tickets and info.
Part of Adventure Island’s expansion includes a total revamp of Endless Surf, the 17,000-square-foot wave pool. The pool will have a fresh new look along with exciting enhancements! COMING SOON!
Though some areas don’t require flotation devices, we definitely recommend that weak or non-swimmers wear life vests, which can be borrowed in various sizes around the park at no additional cost.

The Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Story
by Laura Byrne
The Ride:
The ride is a continuation of Princess Tiana’s story, set in 1927, one year after “The Princess and Frog” movie. But rather than watch her story unfold onscreen, you get to be immersed in her world and even become a part of the story.
While it is the same track and 50-foot drop as Splash Mountain, the experience itself is completely different. It’s an immersion in music and storytelling alongside the characters you’ve come to love from the movie as well as 19 new characters.
It’ll have you activating all of your senses through sight, sound, smell and even touch— the mountain of Splash Mountain has been transformed into a salt mine and you can feel the roughness of the sparking salt deposits on the wall of the queue. And at least twice we could smell the aroma of Tiana’s beignets!
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure just debuted at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and it’s amazing, y’all! We got a sneak peek last month and we discovered that this experience is so much more than a ride about a movie. It’s a story of family, food, community, music and tradition. So let’s “dig a little deeper!”
The storyline to share with your kids before you ride:
Princess Tiana has been busy since the end of the movie—not only with her successful restaurant Tiana’s Palace, but also with building an employee-owned cooperative, Tiana’s Foods, in a former salt mine.
As you step into the queue, you’ll notice it’s Mardi Gras season. Princess Tiana is hosting a party and everyone is welcome! But, with all the hustle, there was a mix-up and Prince Naveen and Louis forgot to book the band.
This is where you come in! Listen closely to the radio program — you’ll not only hear the authentic sounds of New Orleans, but an announcement from the radio announcer that Tiana needs your help finding musicians.
Your magical and musical journey begins as you step on board the log flume and float through the gardens of Tiana’s Foods which are filled with all of the ingredients you need for a big pot of gumbo and then it's on to the bayou. We don’t want to give too much away, but you just might get to see what frog life is like in the bayou with the help of Mama Odie’s magic!
The ride ends with the glamorous soiree featuring all of the musicians you found, including three critter bands from the bayou as they perform Tiana’s new theme song, “Special Spice,” voiced by Anika Noni Rose, the voice of Princess Tiana.
FUN FACT
Among the many songs you’ll hear over the radio in the queue is “Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans,” sung by Leah Chase-Kamata, the daughter of Leah Chase, who inspired the character Princess Tiana.
HOW TO RIDE:
• Kids must be 40 inches or taller.
• There will not be a standby line at first. It is opening with a virtual queue through the My Disney Experience app at 7 a.m. or 1 p.m. You can also purchase Genie+ through the app and reserve a Lightning Lane entry. This price can vary depending on the day. You will need a park reservation for the day you want to ride to access both of these features.

FUN!
FAMILY, FOOD, TRADITION AND
The inspiration:
Princess Tiana's character was inspired by legendary chef, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine” Leah Chase, executive chef emeritus of Dooky Chase Restaurant in New Orleans. She passed away in 2019, but her legacy is deeply ingrained in this ride. Disney Imagineers worked closely with her family over the last four years to develop this experience, and there are so many intentional details.
Her granddaughter Maya told us some of those meaningful connections to her grandmother can be spotted along the way in the queue, from the vegetables on the shelf in the kitchen, to the gumbo pots and hand-written recipes on the wall.
We asked her grandson Edgar Chase IV about what the experience was like when they rode Tiana’s Bayou Adventure for the first time. “This has certainly been a dream come true for our family. To celebrate on this level with Disney not only showcases the hard work my grandparents put into their family and their community ... and to see it come full circle ... it is certainly a dream come true. It is certainly magical.”
FUN FACT
You’ll be able to purchase some of Dooky Chase Restaurant’s signature spices in the gift shop at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
Heading to New Orleans soon?
You MUST visit Dooky Chase’s Restaurant and dine like U.S. presidents like George W. Bush and Barack Obama, along with Ray Charles, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr. and so many more. The family tells us it’s a good idea to make a reservation at least two weeks in advance.
Location: 2301 Orleans Ave. in New Orleans Website: dookychaserestaurants.com
A few Easter eggs to be on the lookout
for in the queue and on the ride:
• A nod to the military: You can see family photos of Tiana’s father in uniform along with newspaper stories of his honors for service in World War I.
• Stars on top of the water tower represent Evangeline and Ray.
• Bear, fox and rabbit figurines and riverboats on the top shelf in Tiana’s office pay homage to Splash Mountain.
• You’ll spot the names of Carmen Smith (senior vice president, Creative Development – Product/ Content & Inclusive Strategies) and Charita Carter (executive producer of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure) on the to-do list on the chalkboard.
• Gumbo Pot on the bottom shelf in the kitchen is similar to the one at the beginning of the movie.
• Tiana on the cover of Cookery Magazine: She’s reading this magazine on the tram at the start of the movie.
• Missing license plate: You’ll notice a license plate missing from the car parked out front along with a note about it on the bulletin board in the queue. Look for the new character Gritty the Rabbit playing it like a washboard! (Case solved!)
• Lari the Armadillo: You’ll see his house on the outside of the Critter Co-Op gift shop, but you’ll also spot him along the way on the ride! Ask the kids how many times they can find him.

Scalloping Season in Florida: A Must-Do Family Adventure!
by Brie Gorecki
Looking for a fun summer activity that will get the kids out of the house—and off their screens? We LOVE taking our kids scalloping as a fun and engaging adventure. If you haven’t been scalloping yet, it’s a MUST to put on your summer bucket list!
Florida’s 2024 scalloping season locally kicks off July 1 and runs through Sept. 24 in Citrus, Hernando and Levy counties, and from July 10 through Aug. 18 in Pasco County.
Whether you go out on your own or hop on a guided tour, here’s what to know before you go.
What are scallops and what kind will I find in the Tampa Bay area?
Scallops are bivalve mollusks like clams, mussels and oysters. But, unlike clams and oysters, scallops can swim!
In the Tampa Bay area, you’ll find—surprise, surprise—bay scallops! They’re smaller than the sea scallops you may be accustomed to ordering at your favorite restaurant, but they are just as tasty. Bay scallops are also more tender on the bite than sea scallops.
Where can I go scalloping in the Tampa Bay area?
There are so many spots to go scalloping from Pasco County north through the Florida panhandle. Some of our local favorites are Crystal River, Homosassa and Pasco County.
PRO TIP: Weekdays are best if you want to avoid crowds. Later in the season also tends to produce larger scallops.
Is scalloping a kidfriendly activity?
YES! Babies and toddlers may not be able to enjoy the full experience, but elementary-aged kids and older will love it. Make sure they are wearing life jackets in the water if they are not strong swimmers or as an extra layer of security. The current can sometimes be strong depending on where you are in the water.
PRO TIP: We love keeping kids engaged by turning it into an underwater egg hunt or scavenger hunt.
How do you catch a scallop?
You can catch scallops by hand or use a small dip net. You’ll typically find the bay scallops among the sea grass in about 3-6 feet of water. Be on the lookout for the row of blue, beady-looking eyes around the rim.
You’ll want to go in for the catch quickly when you spot the scallop since they can swim. They can make swift movements by opening and closing their shells.
PRO TIP: Careful, because the quick open and close movements can snap at fingers. Don’t worry: It won’t take off your fingers, but you’ll definitely feel the pinch.
Do I need a permit or saltwater fishing license to go scalloping?
If you decide to go out on your own boat, then yes, you will need a saltwater fishing license. You can visit fwc.com/ license to get yours. But, if you go on a guided tour, they take care of that for you. Tours and charters are definitely the hasslefree way to go!

Summer Camp Lunches & Small Meals
by Jenny P of @lunchboxmafia
If you pack a school lunch every day like me, you may be ready for a break, but I wouldn’t put away those lunchboxes just yet.
Whether your kids are attending summer camp part-time, all day or not at all, they still need to eat. And to help you keep your sanity, keep your budget on track and avoid becoming a short-order cook over the summer, meal prep is the answer. Hear me out: This is meal prep you can handle.
Here are some tips and shortcuts that are working for us:
• Use leftover scrambled eggs and bacon in fried rice for lunch.
• Cook hard-boiled eggs and chicken in batches. You can use them in ramen or salad and with pasta or rice.
• Make muffins. They freeze well.
• Cut up extra veggies while you’re making dinner.
• Incorporate foods you want your kids to eat with their favorite snacks. If they ask for goldfish, serve with cut-up strawberries and carrot sticks.
• Stock up on boxed cereal, mac and cheese, canned soups and tuna, bread and PB&J.
• Let your kids practice some independence this summer. Get them in the kitchen.
If you’re sending meals to camp, you’ll want to double up on the ice packs, use labels to put your kid’s name on all the things and send water.

Moms to Know
Jenna Cibran
by Julie Tingley, founder of @weemacree
In the five years that we have featured mothers in this special space, I have yet to focus on a part of motherhood that is just as important as all of the others that have been highlighted before.
The role of the woman in the home to be there for every member of the family, at every school or sporting event, and even make time for herself is one of an unsung hero. It’s a juggle we don’t talk about nearly enough, and it surely hasn’t been given the attention it deserves. Jenna Cibran eloquently embodies this sacred role.
With four children approaching four different milestone seasons, an entrepreneurial husband who is growing a business that serves families across Tampa Bay and beyond, and an extended family known for community involvement, she is the face of that piece of motherhood we can all relate to. And as our July Mom to Know, Jenna already feels like a familiar friend.
TBPM: Tell us about your family's background and how your husband’s company came to be.
JC: Michael and I have been married for 18 years and have four children: Cruz, 17, River, 14, Jett, 11 and Presley, 6. In 2002, he began his career in healthcare by managing the day-to-day operations of his family’s business, St. Petersburg Pediatrics, His father, Dr. Mariano Cibran, a pediatrician, recently retired after practicing medicine for over 45 years. Michael applied his experience and knowledge when opening St. Petersburg’s first urgent care dedicated to children, Your Kids Urgent Care.
TBPM: As one child prepares for college, another is beginning high school, a third is heading into his first year of middle school, and the fourth is just starting to lose her teeth, how do you spend quality time with each of your children individually? Do you have any special routines or traditions with them?
JC: We are a very close-knit family and enjoy being together. Michael and I spend time individually with each of our children by going out to lunch or dinner, boating, visiting a theme park or playing a round of golf.
TBPM: Given the stretch of ages and interests, what have you found is the best way to manage involvement in your children’s school activities and extracurriculars?
JC: Since Cruz began driving last year, the three of us are able to manage after school activities and tutoring sessions, which sometimes overlap. Cruz is always willing to help out, which Michael and I appreciate so much. Michael has coached Jett’s flag football teams for a number of seasons in the past and enjoys teaching the boys on the golf course. We both love attending school events, games, golf matches and ballet performances.
TBPM: Your late father was a well-known, well-respected and well-loved local philanthropist. How have you carried on John E. Stross’ legacy of community involvement, and how do you integrate it with your family today?
JC: Yes, my father was the definition of a true philanthropist. He helped start the Children’s Dream Fund, serving on its board for consecutive
years. He was instrumental in helping CASA and was chairman of the board of trustees, even naming an event in his honor, The John E. Stross Peace Breakfast. My father devoted his time and resources to local charities and causes for veterans (Remember Honor Support), animals (Southeastern Guide Dogs), sick children (The Children’s Dream Fund), the mentally challenged (PARC), and the hearing impaired (Deaf and Hearing Connection of Tampa Bay), as well as survivors of domestic violence (CASA). He was also a trustee and docent at the Florida Holocaust Museum.
After the unexpected passing of my father, The John E. Stross Family Foundation was created in his memory to help carry on his philanthropic heart to those in need in our community. Through the foundation, we have been able to continue to support the charities and causes close to his heart such as The Children’s Dream Fund, PARC, CASA, PAL, Redefining Refuge, A Door of Hope and Wee Macree.
TBPM: Let’s be real: the work you do in this season of motherhood is worthy of the world’s most prestigious accolades. What are you most proud of when it comes to yourself and all you’ve done to support the people you love most?
JC: I take pride in knowing that Michael and I are raising responsible, kind and respectful children. We are very proud of our children and their accomplishments.
TBPM: What is your family’s favorite thing to do in Tampa Bay?
JC: I would consider any opportunity where we are able to spend time together as a family as something that makes me the most happy. We love boat rides, golfing, going to dinner and traveling together as a family.

Kids to Know:
by Julie Tingley, founder of @weemacree
In collaboration with Rise Against Hunger and St. John’s Episcopal Parish Day School, the Taylor Koulouris Foundation made it possible for students to pack 12,500 meals that will feed 347 children in Haiti each for an entire school year. As third and fourth graders at the school, our Kids to Know share their experience.
St. John’s Episcopal Parish Day School Grades 3 & 4
TBPM: Tell us about the service project you did at school to help kids in Haiti.
Maddie (3rd): We packed lunches using soy, dried veggies and rice. We had little bags and a funnel, and somebody held the bag and the funnel, and we each took turns putting each item into the funnel.
Jack L. (4th): The third and fourth graders at St. John’s worked with Rise Against Hunger to pack individual meal packets for children in Haiti. Some people put the packets together, some people weighed the packets and some people worked at sealing the packets and turning them into the completed bin.
TBPM: What role did you have in packing food?
Sosie (4th): I was one of the people at a station with big buckets of rice, veggies and soy. You had to put one vitamin packet in every bag, and we followed an order of putting the items in a bag one by one. We had to measure the specific amount of food to make sure that there wasn't too little or too much.
Jack F (4th): I did weighing and sealing bags. The bags needed to be weighed to make sure each kid got a good amount of food. We had to make sure the bags were sealed tight so the food didn’t spill.
TBPM: What did it mean when the gong sounded, and how did that make you feel as you worked?
Xavier (3rd): When the gong rang, it made me feel excited and accomplished because this meant that we filled enough bags to feed children who needed food in Haiti.
Ty (4th): Every time someone rang the gong, that meant we got several more thousand meals packed. It made me feel so proud every time someone rang the gong even if it wasn't me.
TBPM: Why should you prepare food packets for children in Haiti?
Maddie (3rd): I believe, 10 or so years ago there was an earthquake that damaged a lot of Haiti’s community. It’s been hard for them to get food and they had to rebuild their whole country, basically, so that’s why we were packing that food.
Rocco (3rd): The reason to prepare the food packets for children in Haiti is because they don't have access to as much food as we have in the United States. I know they are struggling to find food and resources to live, and I am happy to be able to help them.
James (4th): We should prepare food packets because we have been given so much and we never have to worry about our next meal. It took us such a small amount of time to help so many kids in need.
TBPM: What did it mean to you to pack meals that will feed 347 children for an entire year?
Grace (4th): It means that we just made a difference in so many children’s lives. We may have even saved lives from starvation.
Ty (4th): It means that the kids in Haiti are depending on kids like us to help make sure they don't go hungry.
Noah (3rd): It means that the kids won't be hungry for a long time and they will be happy since they have food. For me, it means a lot to have played a part in this.
TBPM: What did you learn from this experience?
Chase (4th): I learned that some people in different countries are not as fortunate as we are.
Sosie (4th): I learned that we shouldn’t take having food every day for granted because some people in the world don’t have
that, and it feels good to help others that don’t have what we have.
Xavier (3rd): I learned to work with my classmates in unison to do something that represents our SJE family, community and school values.
Jack L. (4th): This experience showed me that something easy and fun could change a lot of people’s lives.
James (4th): I learned that when we work together, we can help many people.
TBPM: How did this project make you think about all the good you can do as a kid in Tampa Bay? Do you feel like you can do something on your own?
Rocco (3rd): It taught me that just a small act of kindness can go a long way, but I don't think that I could do this on my own. Over 60 children each played a small part that went a long way to something bigger than us.
Noah (3rd): I know that I can help even by doing a small thing. Now I feel like I can volunteer to help others in need here.
TBPM: Knowing that your kindness will change lives, what is something you want other kids to know about being kind?
Chase (4th): Being kind is an easy thing to do, and it helps other people.
Jack F (4th): That kindness spreads and that a little bit of kindness goes a long way.
Grace (4th): I want other kids to know that when you’re kind, you can help so many more people other than yourself.

All these experiences are right here in your community, waiting for you to discover them.
In addition to these partners, families can visit the Tampa Museum of Art to see engaging exhibitions and innovative educational programs that emphasize ancient, modern and contemporary art. The museum houses one of the southeast's largest Greek and Roman antique collections. Also on the list is the Henry B. Plant Museum, which features original opulent furnishings and artifacts in educational exhibits, transporting visitors to the late Victorian period, the beginning of Florida’s tourist industry, and the early years of the City of Tampa. The Florida Holocaust Museum (also on the list) honors the memory of the millions who suffered or died in the Holocaust, and is dedicated to teaching the members of all races and cultures the inherent worth and dignity of human life.
Reserving a Discovery Pass is a breeze. Whether you're on your smartphone, tablet or computer or at one of our convenient library locations, it's just a few clicks away. Running for a Purpose!
Steinbrenner High runners help adoptable dogs
by Laura Cross
Follow along with the dog days of summer by checking out @gshs_bosscross and @Shelterdogrunners on Instagram. Remember, each of the dogs the boys run with are up for adoption at @humanesocietytampa.
It’s the dog days of summer, which means most teenagers sleep until noon.
Not the boys of Boss Cross! That’s the name of Steinbrenner High School’s cross-country team. These athletes are taking the “dog days of summer” literally.
Three mornings a week, several members of the team wake up at dawn and drive to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. They pick up a dog, drive to Al Lopez Park, and take that dog on a run!
CJ Clark is a rising senior at Steinbrenner. He’s been doing this for the past three summers. “It’s really good for the dogs to get out. That way, when they go back to the kennels, and people are looking to adopt, they are chill in their cage, and loving on them!”
Ethan Russ just graduated from Steinbrenner and is heading to the University of Florida, but he wants to spend one last summer helping the dogs. “It’s good to know that you’re doing something that’s making a difference,” says Ethan. “We’re helping their temperament out and helping them burn off energy to hopefully get them adopted.”
The Steinbrenner teens take this job very seriously. They each travel to the Humane Society separately, because only one dog can be in a car at a time, and they have learned to properly harness the dogs and run at the pace that makes each dog comfortable. For some, that’s simply a walk; for others, it’s a full-on sprint!
“Oh yeah, they love it! You can tell,” CJ explains. “When you go to take them out of the kennels, they’re rolling around, jumping up on you, licking you … They love it!”
And the kids love it just as much. They usually run about a mile with the dogs, and then walk them over to get some water and stretch a bit. Then they walk them around the park to let them cool down and calm down from their exercise.
There’s no doubt Boss Cross is helping many of these dogs get adopted. In fact, they’ve created an Instagram page called @Shelterdogrunners and they’ve already celebrated their first adoption of the summer!
“That makes me feel awesome!” says CJ. “Like, in the last two years, the two dogs that I ran with that got adopted… Well, it was just the best feeling in the world!”

Dakayla Wilson: Letting Kids Pave their Own Paths
by Tara Payor, Ph.D.
Parenting is challenging, embodied work. Amidst society’s current culture of achievement, parenting’s challenges expand. Concurrently, kids’ autonomy and free time contract (to almost negligible levels). Of course parents want children to succeed. Within achievement culture, however, efforts are misguided and counterproductive. The mother of a competitive dancer and soccer player, I also am in achievement culture’s throes—working to cultivate the best blend of freedom and training.
Jonathan Haidt’s work elucidates on The Great Rewiring of childhood. Occurring from 2010-2015, this period altered kids’ social habits, role models and both emotional and physical well-being. Whether parenting Gen Z (born 1995-2010) and/or what some term Gen Alpha (born 2011-present), this Great Rewiring—coupled with achievement culture— matters for us all. Kids are increasingly anxious. Parents are increasingly “snowplow parenting”—overly involved and attempting to remove all obstacles. However, seeing our kids actualize their full potential with autonomy and confidence means removing parental interference. For children to successfully and independently navigate adult life, childhood must include time for exploring varying healthy outlets and learning from non-parental adults (without parents’ intrusions). These varied, obstacle course experiences are life’s training grounds.
Enter Dakayla Wison—runner up of Fox Television’s 18th season of “So You Think You Can Dance.” A Tampa native, Wilson graduated from Bloomingdale High School in 2023 and, on June 21, from the CLI Conservatory in Southampton, Massachusetts. Her upbringing wasn’t obstacle free. Her progress wasn’t stifled by adult intrusion. Raised by her grandmother, Debra Ann Wilson, Wilson has achieved notable success. She is autonomous, confident and, overall, well. In what follows, Wilson illuminates how her grandmother’s somewhat hands-off approach helped the pair fluently navigate the unpredictable terrain that undergirds life’s competitive endeavors.
As parents, we must learn from our kids—and other youth—by listening and acting accordingly. Wilson’s experiences are applicable across many extra-curriculars. Raising people who engage with the world in emotionally and physically healthy ways means parents must stop blocking kids’ embodied experiences so kids can plow their own paths.
TBPM: Tell us about your parents.
DW: My grandmother has taken care of me since I was 2—serving as my mom, dad, grandma, teacher—my everything. My biological parents couldn’t financially, physically or mentally take care of me and passed me along to her. At 7, I learned my biological mom passed away from drug and alcohol abuse. I didn’t know what that meant and, confused because I thought my grandma was my mom, attended the funeral. The situation and relationships were eventually explained.
My father entered my life when I was 13; one of my half-sisters found me on Facebook. I don’t hold grudges. When he expressed interest in getting to know me, I accepted what occurred and we built a relationship. My grandmother trusted my decisions. We have pasts and futures for a reason, and I focus on changing the events I can change.
TBPM: What about meeting with your dad while filming SYTYCD?
DW: I knew he was nearby, so I messaged him. We only had one day off during filming, and we met for breakfast. He also attended the show, and I dedicated a self-choreographed solo to “My Immortal” to him. It was his first time seeing me as a mature dancer who was putting everything out there.
TBPM: Kids need healthy outlets. Do you remember when dance became that for you?
DW: When my dad entered my life again. His presence hit me—my biological parents were no longer just two question marks. At 12-13, I understood dance as something serious. I was a poor communicator, unable to express my feelings to my grandma in words. If I could show her—anyone—in movement, they would understand. They would see the story—the pain—when expressed through dance versus description.
36 TampaBayParenting.com JULY 2024
Dakayla with her grandmother, Debra Ann Wilson

TBPM: As you grew more involved in dance, did your grandmother do deep dives into conventions, training opportunities and local studios?
DW: No. She let me take the reins because I was dedicated. I chose intensives I wanted to attend, and I figured out logistics. I’d tell her my performance times and to bring herself lunch.
TBPM: Do parents’ well-intentioned actions sometimes become barriers to kids’ progress?
DW: When parents become overbearing, yes. At conventions, I constantly see parents nudging kids about where to stand, what to wear and how to move. If the goal is kids enjoying what they’re doing, let them have freedom. Nagging isn’t productive and kids’ self-image is already delicate. Parents can guide kids’ navigation of their passions without being controlling and potentially stifling kids’ potential.
TBPM: How did your grandmother respond to your pursuing professional dancing?
DW: She wasn’t thrilled. She’s encouraged a plan B—like being a physical therapist. Still, she’s witnessed my passion for the craft and how disciplined I was in graduating high school a year early. Though I applied to CLI without her knowledge, she saw I had the talent to make it and the willingness to put in the work. My offer to be on SYTYCD solidified her support. So far, it’s working out for me. My mind and heart are open to accepting opportunities coming my way.
TBPM: How do you keep joy in what you are doing?
DW: Having other creative outlets and learning from other people. My grandmother calls me a learning hog because I’ve always enjoyed learning about different things. It’s key kids learn to be stubborn and fight for themselves, but collaboration is essential. At the conservatory, I learn from people from around the globe—gaining inspiration from how they experience the world. A drive to learn from other people is indispensable. I also started journaling my thoughts and feelings, which allows me to reflect on my progress. The written pages capture my love for and readiness to fight for dance.
TBPM: What about lessons on losing?
DW: I frame losses into learning experiences. What can I take away from those being recognized for excellence and how can I apply it? What made those who took third and fourth place different from me? We can look to others without beating ourselves down.
SYTYCD was most interested in having a good human. I take pride in being a genuine, high-spirited and positive person.
TBPM: How can parents best support kids in competitive sports?
DW: Limit criticism so that kids communicate with you. We need assurance that our guardians are supportive because we won’t always know what to do next. Demonstrate openness to plans not working out. Reinspire children with new opportunities. Definitely let children have freedom to explore.

The Power of Sleep
Why sleep is important and how to make sure your children get enough
Your children may fight bedtime as strenuously as they can, but here’s the real truth from the mouth of babes: Sixty percent of middle schoolers and 70 percent of high schoolers admit that they do not get adequate sleep.
And that’s just awful, according to Dr. Luis Ortiz, a physician at the Sleep Center of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital who researches narcolepsy and other sleep disorders and how they affect children’s health. Lack of sleep affects children’s developing brains. Without adequate sleep, “they can’t function well, they don’t have focus, and they can’t perform well,” he says. For children with mood disorders, lack of sleep becomes a painful cycle, with insomnia exacerbating the symptoms of anxiety, depression and hyperactivity and the mood disorders themselves making it difficult to sleep.
To learn about how much sleep is enough and how to ensure your child gets enough, read on for tips from Dr. Ortiz. (Hint: Adults can apply some of these sleep routine and hygiene habits to their own lives too!)
by Anu Varma Panchal
Sleep during the teen years
Dr. Ortiz explains that tweens and teens experience a shift in internal clocks that causes them wake up later and stay awake later—and this does not change until they are in their mid-20s.
It’s a tough age for bedtime battles, especially when you’re competing with the prospect of binge-watching a Netflix show or hanging out with friends on social media. Some teens may protest that they napped in the afternoon so that they could stay up late studying, or that their after-school job means they have to catch up on sleep on the weekends.
While “sleep banking” on weekends can have a positive impact, it is not as good as just getting a good night of sleep every night. And daytime naps are not as deep or healing either. “Fractured sleep schedules can lead to sleep disorders later in life,” says Dr. Ortiz.
With older teens, lack of sleep can be particularly dangerous if they get behind the wheel. Drowsy driving kills about 6,400 people annually in the United States, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving also results in about 100,000 crashes, more than 71,000 injuries and $12.5 million in damages each year.
So although your kid might be past the age of tucking in bed, it’s just as important to get them to go to sleep at a reasonable time. “You don’t want to be coercive,” says Dr. Ortiz. “You want to negotiate about when that phone is going to be turned off. But when lights are out, that should be it. And the parent has to let the kid know why they are doing this.”
A NOTE ABOUT MELATONIN
While melatonin is marketed as a supplement in the United States, Dr. Ortiz warns that it is considered a medication in many parts of the world and should be treated as one. A pediatrician should always guide the use and dosage of melatonin. And while low-dose melatonin can be a sleep aid, it should not be a permanent solution to sleep problems.

How Much Sleep Should My Child Get?
Here’s the rule: A 10-year-old child needs 10 hours of sleep each night. Younger children need more, and teens should aim for nine hours each night.
Dr. Ortiz suggests these bedtimes:
Elementary school ages: 7:30-9 p.m.
Middle school ages: 8:30-10 p.m.
Teens: 9-11 p.m.
Set a Bedtime Routine
As July draws to a close, it’s a good time to start prepping good sleep habits for the upcoming school year. Begin your routine two weeks before the first day of school to get the best results.
DURING THE DAY, YOUR CHILD SHOULD:
• Get plenty of natural light first thing in the morning.
• Get plenty of physical exercise during the day (but not within two hours of bedtime).
• Play and do homework and other stimulating activities away from their bed so that bed remains associated with sleep.
• Avoid naps (if the child is school-age).
BEFORE BEDTIME:
• Dim the lights at home four hours prior to bedtime—it’s a sign for the body to start producing melatonin.
• Keep the temperatures cool—68-72 degrees is ideal for sleep.
• Turn off electronics an hour before bedtime.
• Keep televisions, tablets, charging phones and stimulating toys away from the bedroom.
• Reduce noise, such as televisions in another room or siblings of a different age in the same room.
AT BEDTIME:
• Follow a consistent bedtime routine every day, even if the caregiver changes.
• Incorporate a warm bath before changing into pajamas.
• Read one or two short, soothing stories, but avoid any with disturbing or frightening themes.
• Be aware of changes in routine that might affect a child’s ability to fall asleep, such as knowledge of a house guest arriving, or a parent departing on a trip shortly.
The Power of Light
Sometimes, the best things in life are free! Sunlight—and adequate exposure to it—can be incredibly effective in regulating sleep. “Seeing plenty of natural light, especially first thing in the morning, can diminish effects of electronic light exposure at night,” says Dr. Ortiz. “If your child has problems sleeping at a certain time, exposure to light in the first 30 minutes can shift the time of sleep to earlier the next night.”
WHEN TO SEE A SLEEP DOCTOR
Common ailments that children can suffer from include nightmares, night terrors and bed wetting. Most of these are normal in young children and relatively harmless as long as they are outgrown.
However, some symptoms do indicate a visit to a sleep specialist:
Your child is excessively tired during the day. Narcolepsy (when they frequently fall asleep) often occurs between 8 and 14 years of age, but often goes undiagnosed for up to 10 years.
Your child shows behavioral problems and/or hyperactivity. Parents often come to Dr. Ortiz to be evaluated for sleep problems before proceeding with a diagnosis of ADHD.
Your child has difficulty falling asleep at night. Behavioral or medical therapy can help with this.
Mood disorders are exacerbated.
Your child shows signs of sleep apnea, including excessive snoring and or short periods of not breathing during sleep.
Regardless of the condition, it’s crucial to get treatment. Undiagnosed narcolepsy, for example, has been linked to poorer college outcomes and lower income, even when the studies have been adjusted for parents’ income and educational level. Says Dr. Ortiz: “Early diagnosis and treatment can save a child much heartache and frustration.”

On the Road Again...
but are you using your child’s car seat correctly? Probably not.
by Laura Byrne
The research is out there, friends. Many parents and caregivers are not using their children’s car seats correctly. It’s obviously not intentional: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most parents believe their child’s car seats ARE installed the right way, but almost half (46%) are not. And then there’s the question of whether your child is USING it correctly.
Tonya Randolph, Bay Care Kids’ children's wellness and safety specialist, tells us it’s rare to see a family with a correctly installed seat. The truth is, it can be overwhelming.
Common mistakes parents make:
• Not switching the retractor with the lap and shoulder belt
• Using the lower anchors in the upside-down position
• Incorrect use of lower anchor and seat belt
• Adding products to the car seat that did not come with the car seat
• Turning children around to forward-facing too soon (child should be rear-facing until at least 2 years of age)
• Shoulder harnesses are too low, too high or not snug enough
• Retainer clip is too low or too high
• Seats move more than one inch
• Moving kids out of booster seats too early (before they max out the height or weight limit of that booster seat)
• Not realizing that different states or countries have different child restraint laws It’s a lot to take in. We know.
The good news is, these are all easy fixes, whether you go through your car seat manual and correct mistakes on your own, or book an appointment with a certified technician. We promise it is worth the time and effort.
Visit seatcheck.org to easily book a certified car seat safety technician near you and find the right seat for your child and/or vehicle.
(There may be a small fee for the appointment depending on location.)
Are some car seats safer than others?
Tonya Randolph: All car seats out on the market pass the same safety standards. A couple of manufacturers may add what we call a couple of extra bells and whistles like this one [Babyark Convertible Car Seat; see sidebar]. It just varies on what the families are looking for. But any car seat that's out on the market has passed all those safety standards and it's ok to use.
The Ultimate Road Trip Companion: the Babyark Convertible Car Seat
Looking to up your car seat game?
Meet the most technologically advanced smart car seat to hit the market—one that never expires! Yep, you read that right. They're designed with steel SafeCoils™ that slow the seat’s forward momentum upon impact, and have a smart base and mobile app to alert you about seat installation issues, whether the child isn’t buckled properly or if they’ve accidentally been left in the vehicle.
Talk about peace of mind for those long travel days.
Despite its sleek design and all its bells and whistles, our favorite part about Babyark is the strap design, which includes magnets to keep the straps out of the way so that you’re not digging in awkward places.
Newborn to age 6 or 65 pounds; babyark.com; $790 - $990.
Florida law requires…
• Children ages 5 and under to be secured properly in a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device.
• The use of seat belts or child restraint devices by drivers of motor vehicles, all front seat passengers and all children riding in a vehicle under 18.
