Roy Paz, local police officer and speed skating coach, with his daughters Anna (left) and Samantha (right).

As a father and coach, I trust St. Joseph's Children's Hospital

for the best emergency care. When my daughters suffered serious injuries while speed skating, I made sure they were both treated at the Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Center at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. The nurses and doctors were confident and reassuring, putting my family at ease. Thanks to them, both girls will be skating circles around me for years to come. For that, I’m very grateful.

FROM THE EDITOR

Time flies. It’s true of the seasons and it’s true of parentparentjoy hood. One day you’re bringing your little bundle of joy out (and poop) home, and the next you’re sending them out into the world to write their own story and have their own families. That’s why it’s so important to enjoy all the the time you have with your children – from the womb to the the college dorm. Dads often get a bad rap for not being as involved with the kids as mom, but there are plenty of super dads out there who are at parent-teacher conferences, soccer games, dance recitals, or just outside playing. We’ve got some of those super dads on page 44. Father’s Day is June 20, so don’t forget to celebrate your super guy. And while I’m sure he’ll appreciate any gift (even a tie), try something new this year. Buy season tickets for one of the Tampa Bay area’s professional sporting teams, a weekend at a golf resort or a romantic dinner for two.

Marilu Henner and I at the W ine and Food Festival in St. Pete Beach.

For moms-to-be, it’s a special time, full of the joy and wonderment of what’s to come. In this issue, we have tips on how to prepare for your little one’s arrival on page 8 and some great products to consider having in your nursery on page 42. Pregnancy is just the beginning of the journey. There are plenty of firsts to come: smiles, steps, words, days of school, tantrums. You’ll make memories every day and it won’t always be easy, but kids definitely keep it interesting. So, here’s to the journey. Congratulations to all the “little ones” who are graduating. And enjoy the summer, it’ll fly by.

family addition PREPARE

A

SIBLINGS FOR A NEW PERSON TO LOVE

new baby brings joys and challenges to a family. Parents are excited but they also wonder how an older child will react to the newborn. All sorts of questions arise. How should we tell her that she’s going to have a baby brother or sister? Will she be jealous of the new baby? How can we help her get along? When do you tell an older child and what to say about the pregnancy and a new baby really depends a lot on the age and maturity level of that child. For older children, it may not be a big concern. The relationship between siblings is very important. Preparing a child ahead of time for the birth of their sister or brother will help him adjust when the baby is born. Be honest. Explain that the baby will be cute and cuddly but also will cry and take a lot of your time and attention. Also, make sure that your older child knows that it may be a while before he can play with the new baby. Reassure your child that you will love him just as much after the baby is born as you do now. Tell your child about when he was born. Show your child photos when he was being fed, held and bathed as a baby. Let your child go with you to your prenatal visits. Have your child listen to the fetal heartbeat and feel the baby kick. Talk

Photo courtesy of Nicole Geller Photography

with your child about what their new sibling will be like. Use books that show pictures of babies and discuss what babies can and cannot do. Involve your child in preparations for the new baby. Let him help you pack your suitcase for the hospital and help pick out baby’s coming home clothes. Make the baby’s homecoming a special event for the whole family. When you come home from the hospital, let daddy carry the baby so that your arms are open for your older child. If your child wants to, let him help make birth announcements by drawing pictures. Have your child pass out his announcements to friends. Have your older child and baby exchange gifts. Your older child may want to pick out a special gift for the baby. Ask your friends and relatives to greet your older child before seeing the new baby. Involve your child in caring for the new baby. If your child wants to, let her bring you a diaper, help dress, burp and feed the baby. Smile and talk to the baby, especially when the baby is fussy (be sure to let the older child know you are aware that the baby is enjoying it). Hold the baby with supervision. Allow your older child to verbalize negative feelings toward the baby or you. Tell your child that sometimes moms don’t feel well during pregnancy. During those times and while you are in the hospital, dad and your older child may develop an even closer relationship. Take

advantage of the developing relationship and encourage it. Talk, hold, and show affection to the sibling whenever you see signs of jealously or regressive behavior. Some children regress after a younger sibling is born. The areas that may be affected include eating, toileting, crying, and sleeping. Don’t put your older child down because of his regression; rather, reassure your child and offer praise for his big brother actions and behavior. Remind the older child that she is special, too. Create a certain space in the home that belongs to her exclusively. Give your older child seniority by providing special jobs at home so she can contribute to the family. Spend time alone with her throughout the day and especially at bedtime. One or both parents should have a planned activity outside of home with the older child only. There should be a routine weekly outing for the sibling (park, restaurant, or library). Encourage independent behavior. Some children enjoy knowing they are more capable of caring for themselves and seek ways of becoming more independent as a response to the baby. Teach the older child independent behavior (at play, dressing, or toileting), as appropriate for your child’s age. The American Academy of Pediatrics is an organization of 60,000 pediatricians committed to the attainment of optimal physical, mental and social health and well-being for infants, children, adolescents and young adults. eating for you

W

ACHIEVE A

................................ BY DR. CESAR LARA

HEALTHY WEIGHT BEFORE AND AFTER PREGNANCY

hether you’re planning to get pregnant, are pregnant, or recently delivered, the challenge of maintaining a healthy weight can seem daunting; but with a positive outlook, the task at hand is not only manageable but enjoyable.

The reasons for excess weight fall into four categories: psychological, behavioral, behavioral/metabolic and nutrition.

Many of the psychological issues relate to fear, insecurity or guilt. In pregnancy, fearing that her baby may not be born healthy, a caring mother may overeat. Behavioral usually refers to emotions and thoughts related to boredom, stress, habit, traditions and social situations. This could be the woman who eats everything on her plate even when no longer hungry due to force of habit. Even worse, is the mom who feels obligated to finish what her children don’t eat. Behavioral/Metabolic is the area where a bariatric physician, like myself, will evaluate and treat patients for underlying conditions, such as metabolic syndrome or hormonal imbalance, including thyroid or peri-menopause. In addition, medications that a person may be taking can exacerbate weight gain. And with nutrition a lot of the problem is taking in too much sugar.

However, no matter the source of your weight issues, there are some easy steps to take toward a healthier you.

Recognize some of the psychological and behavioral challenges that support your dysfunctional eating Sleep at least seven hours a day

Do not skip meals and eat at least three meals a day and a few snacks

Each meal should have protein, and your protein intake should be at least four palm-size servings spread throughout your meals and snacks

Minimize teaspoons of sugar per day to 15

Drink at least eight glasses of water a day

Begin an enjoyable exercise program that you do at least three times a week

If you’re pregnant, you should talk to your physician about what your calorie needs are. Now is not the time to start dieting, as you and your baby need the right amount of calories for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Typically, a weight gain of 20 to 35 pounds during pregnancy is normal. If you’re overweight or underweight, your target weight gain may be different. Visit mypyramid.gov to get your own MyPyramid Plan for Moms. Your plan will show you the foods you should eat and amounts that are right for you. You also can check out the MyPyramid Planner for Moms to see how your food choices compare to what you need. Don’t deprive yourself, though. If you want a sundae or a piece of cake have it. Just do it in moderation. If you choose to breastfeed, you’ll also need to find out about what your calorie needs are. Typically, you need about 300-500 additional calories above what’s recommended for your age and weight for a healthy milk supply. Achieving a true healthy weight goes beyond daily weigh-ins or measurements. It’s all about being a better you. Information from mypyramid.gov was used in this report. Dr. Cesar A. Lara is a board certified family physician and also works in the field of bariatrics, the medical treatment of obesity and weight loss. He has offices in Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Dunedin and can be found online at www.cesarlaramd.com.

summer break

................................ BY CANDI WINGATE

QUALITY CARE BENEFITS KIDS, MOMS

S

chool is out, and the search for child care is on. The challenge most parents face is finding quality care that fits their budget.

Consider a Nanny

Nannies are no longer exclusive to the wealthy. If you have two children in full time daycare you can afford a nanny. Whether you need a full-time nanny or part-time babysitter, trusted online sources put local care providers at your fingertips. You can find candidates quickly based on your personal requirements and budget.

Look Nearby

There likely are families in your neighborhood with young children. Get with these parents and arrange shared care, where two or more households take turns attending to the children. Parents might need to take time off work during their turn, but it should be minimal as other households are rotating as well.

Back to School

College students on summer break are ideal candidates for child care. They can be recruited through the on-campus career centers or through a parent network in your community. Many will be looking for jobs as resume builders, so their pay expectations might be lower for that purpose. Plus, their schedules usually are flexible during the summer months.

Family Reunion

Enlisting the help of a relative this summer can be a win-win for everyone. Whether it’s a teenage cousin or beloved grandma, your children can enjoy some quality bonding time. Your relative may not accept payment, but you should certainly offer. Treat her as you would a hired care provider. Negotiate pay, respect their schedule, keep lines of communication open and be direct in your expectations.

Summer School

It’s true that kids deserve a break from the intense learning schedules of the school year, but there’s no reason the learning should completely stop. Half-day summer school can be a great option to keep your child mentally engaged. Summer schools may be available through your child’s regular school, an alternative school, civic organizations or churches.

Day Camp

Affordable day camps offer activities from sports to science to fine arts. Local options might include science museums, arts centers, YMCA/YWCA, Boys & Girls Club, city parks and recreation and nearby colleges.

Volunteer

City recreational departments often offer a volunteer program for kids 13 and older. Volunteer opportunities can include office work, recreational centers, aquatics, senior citizens and children’s summer programs. These volunteer programs are a unique way for kids to explore career opportunities, give back to the community and receive school credit. You might find that a combination of these options is most efficient and cost-effective. Take your time in selecting what works best for your family and budget. failure’s blessings

............................ BY MARK HELLER

IT CAN BE A POWERFUL TEACHER

Last week at my school’s Fifth and Sixth Grade Inventors’ Expo, I got to see the creativity of young minds. There were many great ideas presented, but none of the interesting and practical inventions or concepts struck me as powerfully as the young man I encountered whose idea hadn’t worked.

she will not learn a great deal. Mostly, she will not be grateful but will think that other people are supposed to solve her problems. By the teen years, if children have been conditioned to let others solve their problems, they will not be prepared to be accountable as adults.

This student stood firmly in front of his project board and spoke with great pride and energy about what he had learned through the failure of his invention project. He analyzed his processes and described where he thought the glitches were, and then said: “I really didn’t fail at all – like Edison, I just discovered yet another way it wouldn’t work.”

In a recent article in Time, author Megan McArdle, the business and economics editor at the Atlantic, wrote that “America allows its citizens room to fail – and if they don’t succeed, to try, try again.” McArdle notes that even our business and legal systems (through the world’s most generous rules of corporate and personal bankruptcy) create opportunities for successful business ventures to rise from the ashes of failure.

It was a proud moment. He showed exactly the kind of attitude I hope we are cultivating in all of our young people, in every school and in every family. Life is full of setbacks and disappointments, but in order to be successful adults and citizens, children must be resilient. They must learn to respond to setbacks with renewed vigor and focused effort. Giving up at the slightest sign of friction should not be acceptable.

Take a Step Back

Cultivating this kind of attitude requires a great deal of restraint from parents. The impulse is to protect our children from pain, to help ease their path, to make things easier for them than they were for us. Stepping in to solve the problems our children are grappling with is, in the end, counter-productive. Parents certainly should advise and coach, but children need to wrestle with problems and learn to solve them as well. There is a fine line between advising and the kind of intervention that robs them of the opportunity to build their problem-solving skills. I know that it’s hard to watch our children struggle. But I also know that the learning and growing that happens as a result is incredibly beneficial in cultivating resilience and creativity, perhaps the two most important characteristics for success. If you both literally and metaphorically clean up your child’s messes,

A Means, Not an End

Failure is wrongly viewed as the end of the story. It is rightly viewed as a challenge in progress, a stepping stone to larger success, an occasion for learning and development and an opportunity for creative change and innovation. Through a course I took on Shakespeare, I learned to view the tragedies, such as Hamlet and Macbeth as incomplete comedies. In the comedies, all kinds of crazy things happen after the cause appears to be lost. The characters rely on their creativity and guile to extricate themselves from the potential disasters they confront. Their actions bring redemption and a positive resolution that is never achieved in the tragedies. What a great metaphor for life. Resilience and creativity as a response to failure can bring us all to higher heights. To paraphrase author Wendy Mogel, there are indeed blessings that come from a skinned knee. Mark Heller is Head of School at Academy at the Lakes, an independent preK3 – 12th grade school in Land O’ Lakes that serves the North Tampa community. The Gem Within

Young women from the Centre for Girls are discovering the gem within thanks to jewelry artist Michele Stone and Paula Allen from the KidzCreate! Art gallery at the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. Stone, in collaboration with Allen, worked with 15 young women, ages 11 – 14, to create one-of-a-kind necklaces from natural and glass stones for the exhibit, “Pearls of Wisdom: Discovering the gem within.” The exhibit consists of 15 framed pieces of art and a vibrant, organic abstract wall hanging. The intricate jewelry patterns are coupled with a picture of the girls wearing their necklace and a handwritten note depicting what the necklace’s colors represent. The exhibit will be on display through October at the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, 1002 East Palm Ave., Tampa. To learn more, contact Allen at pallen@childrensboard.org or 813-528-0647.

Make the Most of Summer

School’s out for the summer, and it’s time to figure out what your kids are going to do to pass the time. The Girl Scouts of West Central Florida offers more than 150 age-appropriate summer camp sessions throughout June and July for girls entering kindergarten through 12th grade, and they don’t need to be registered Girl Scouts. There are three camps – Camp Dorothy Thomas in Riverview, Camp Scoutcrest in Odessa and Camp Wildwood. Photography, horseback riding and swimming are among the activities offered. Can’t decide on just one? Don’t want to sleep away for a week? Girls can customize their camps, and all sessions include sports, nature exploration and arts and crafts. “Girl Scout summer camp programs encompass a rich history of nearly 100 years of providing outdoor experiences for girls,” says Elayne Dorsey, interim CEO of GSWCF. “Camp is a place where girls learn to live and work together, make new friends, practice leadership skills and, of course, have fun!” Plus, the camps are accredited by the American Camp Association, a national agency that conducts independent safety audits. Background checks also are conducted for each employee working at a Girl Scout summer camp. Visit www.gswcf.org to register.

Science with Sid

Sid the Science Kid kicks off summer on PBS Kids with a new “No School Singalong Special!” on June 21. In this special episode, Sid and his friends decide to spend their day off from school putting on a show and taking turns singing favorite science songs that they learned at school. Sid will also host the PBS Kids video player at www.pbskids.org/video during the week of June 14, sharing songs and clips from the special episode. Sid the Science Kid, an animated series from The Jim Henson Co., is based on the Preschool Pathways to Science, an in-use curriculum created by cognitive researchers and preschool educators and promotes exploration and science readiness in a kid-friendly way.

John’s Pass Pirate Days

Pirates are invading the Pass. Come out and surround yourself in all the action. The family-friendly event will feature a pirate invasion, pirate ball, parade, costume contest, children’s treasure hunt, games, live music, pub crawl and much more. There will also be a food court and Arts and crafts show. The increasingly popular event celebrates the discovery of John’s Pass by turtle farmer, John Levique after the hurricane of September 1848. The festival promotes hurricane awareness and education, too. The festival is June 11-13 in the Madeira Beach area. Visit www.johnspassfestivals.com/johnlevique for details.

A Savior Brother

The term savior sibling was introduced through novelist Jodi Picoult’s “My Sister’s Keeper, a fictional account of a 13-year old who sues for medical emancipation after she is asked to donate blood, bone marrow and a kidney to a sister who has leukemia. Now journalist Beth Whitehouse tells the true story of Katie Trebing, who was born with Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare disease that prevents bone marrow from producing red blood cells, in The Match: Savior Siblings and One Family’s Battle to Heal Their Daughter. From birth, Katie required monthly blood transfusions. Her parents decided to use preimplantation genetic diagnosis and in vitro fertilization to conceive Christopher, a savior sibling with bone marrow that matched Katie’s. The Match provides an account of the Trebing’s sojourn, examing the emotional, medical and ethical concerns surrounding their decisions. let your glow show

..................................... BY MARIANNE AZNEER

SKIN CARE SOLUTIONS FOR THE BUSY MOM

M

otherhood can be the most exhausting yet the most rewarding experience in a woman’s life. But with carpooling, play dates, doctor’s appointments, birthday parties and a myriad of other activities, it often leaves very little time for mom. However, when we look at those plump, rosy-cheeked faces of our children with their glowing complexion we are reminded of how blessed we are. So how do mommies put the glow back into their complexion? It’s not as complicated or expensive as you might think. Just a few basic and easy changes in your lifestyle and skin care regimen can bring back that dewy, youthful skin in as little as 30 days. Start with a medical-grade exfoliation. This could be a microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, an exfoliating facial or a light chemical peel. All of these help get rid of dead skin cells and remove layers of damaged skin to reveal healthy, glowing new skin. Maintain those effects with a great skin cleanser that contains glycolic, salicylic or lactic acid to enhance exfoliation on a daily basis. The choice of product is based on your skin type. Use a light-based moisturizer infused with peptides, green tea, vitamin C or growth factors to help stimulate collagen and ward off those early signs of aging. A great eye cream helps moisturize and refresh the delicate eye area. And sunscreen on a daily basis is the best-kept anti-aging secret. It can be as a simple as one, two, three with a great skin care expert to guide you. Remember skin changes with the seasons and your skin care regimen needs to adapt as well. Healthy skin is beautiful skin. Just as there is not one parenting strategy that fits all children, such is the same for skin care. The key to success is finding a skin care expert who will find the right combination for you. Soon your friends will say “you look too young to have children that age.” And who doesn’t want to hear that. Marianne Azneer is a national laser trainer and aesthetic consultant at Skin NV in South Tampa. She specializes in treating skin conditions, such as acne, rosacea and melasma, and in ethnic skin care.

And while he teases her that if he ever gets out of this one, he’ll never go on another one, he couldn’t be happier about the life and family, they’ve built together, which includes daughters Allison, 12, and Alyssa, 6. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? It’s that my children are a true blend of my wife and I and that they are a legacy for our ideals and beliefs. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? That depends on what they want to do because while I’m more of a “guy’s guy,” my girls are kind of “girly girls.” Every now and then we get to do the outdoors/fishing stuff, but most of the time it’s going to movies and going on shopping trips. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood?

I find the most challenging part to be finding more time to spend with them. As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? I find my responsibilities ever changing. When my girls were first born, we had to take care of everything for them. Then they evolved and started seeing the world through their own eyes, although we still took care of most of their needs. I have enjoyed watching their individual personalities grow and develop. I know that my responsibilities will eventually be just to provide a support system. What advice would you give other fathers? Love your kids for as long as you can. It is often difficult to balance a career and spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? Fortunately I met my wife late in life, so I had plenty of time to focus 100 percent of my time and energy

to establishing a career. I find it difficult because there are certainly more things I could do to accomplish more professionally. However, it would come at a sacrifice to our family’s time and it’s not worth it. What is something people don’t know about you? That I almost died in a car accident and I believe I’m here today for a reason, yet, I don’t understand what that reason is. What makes you happy? My family, fishing and being thanked for a good job makes me happy. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? My kitchen… have I told you that my wife is a gourmet cook? And when she’s off duty, the Tampa Yacht Club or another one of the wonderful restaurants we have in the bay area. Of course, this is only if the winds blowing and I can’t go fishing.

No stranger to bay areas, Brendan McLaughlin has been in Tampa Bay area homes for 16 years as a journalist on ABC Action News. And even though he and wife Sandy met and wed in San Francisco 26 years ago, he says Tampa is definitely home. Now, with son Patrick and daughter Caitlin both out of college, the couple share their home with a gregarious Airedale Terrier named Archie, and enjoy being able to walk to Ybor City and downtown Tampa.

BRENDAN MCLAUGHLIN

What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? The most rewarding part of being a dad is the experience of watching your children develop their unique talents and character. The $1,000 IRS tax credit for dependant children also is nice. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? Putting them on my shoulders at the mall. Wait, they don’t let me do that anymore. Riding on their shoulders at the mall. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Putting my ego aside and realizing that the rules under which I was raised aren’t necessarily the best rules for my kids. The world has changed and each child is unique. It’s also hard to be objective and fair in dealing with someone you love so much. What role model in your life influenced the kind of father you are? I think every man’s father is a role model for better or worse. Lucky for me and my children, William F. McLaughlin was a dedicated and loving dad. However nobody taught me more about the messy art of raising human beings than my wife. Sandy could (and should) write a book on parenting. What advice would you give other fathers? Remember that children want to do the right thing. Don’t take it personally when they act up. Hitting or yelling doesn’t help -- ever. It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? Working the night shift as I have for so many years has been amazingly family friendly. When Caitlin and Patrick were small, I was home with them all morning until naptime. Then I’d come home for dinner and put them to bed before returning to anchor the late news. For many years, they didn’t think Dad had a job. Brendan Pictured outside of his Tampa Heights home with Archie.

What’s something people don’t know about you? Nothing. I’m on Facebook. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? Most people don’t realize that much of the Tampa Riverwalk is already built. Sandy and I love to walk or bike along the Hillsborough River in the late afternoon and watch the sun set over the water. It’s a glimpse into the amazing city that Tampa is becoming.

DR. BRETT SCOTCH

McMillwain Family Dentist

Brett Scotch pictured with his wife Jodi and their children Lauren and Benjamin in their New Tampa home.

Originally from Boston, Dr. Brett Scotch grew up in Florida and graduated from the University of Florida. After completing his residency in Michigan, where he received training in ear, nose and throat surgery, Scotch returned to Florida and the Tampa area. His return was a boom for Tampa, as he served on active duty in the Air Force at MacDill Air Force Base’s hospital. Yet, the father of two, Lauren, 5 and Benjamin, 3, whose wife Jodi also graduated from the University of Florida, is proudest of his family. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? When I come home from work and have two kids run to me at full speed, maple syrup kisses, silly artwork and the endless supply of innocent questions from curious minds. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? They are at the age where they love to play outdoors and are eager to learn new sports, so we enjoy going to the park and playing basketball, tee-ball and tennis and swimming in the pool.

What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Figuring out age appropriate answers to the variety of questions I receive. As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? I must lead by example. They watch everything I do and take it all in. I try to provide my children the tools they need to be responsible, productive members of society, to follow their dreams and give back to others. What advice would you give other fathers? “Children don’t keep” – this is a line from a poem my wife found in a magazine and has on our bathroom mirror. It is a daily reminder of how fast kids grow up, these amazing moments we have today have to be appreciated. There will be time for a lot of things later in life, but time with your children when they are young is precious and to be savored. It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them?

It is definitely challenging balancing my career with family. In my job I often get called at odd hours for emergencies. But my family is extremely important and I make sure my time with them is quality time. We often have daddy and daughter date night or father and son night, so I can give them the individual attention they crave. And I love those nights, too. What is something people don’t know about you? I sing in the operating room and the shower. What makes you happy? I once heard someone, I think it was Seal, say “a happy wife is a happy life,” but this applies to my children as well. A happy and healthy family is all anyone can really ask for. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa Bay? Busch Gardens or Wiregrass mall

Mural Contest Sparks Students’ Creativity Carrollwood Day School recently participated in a national mural contest sponsored by the Wyland Foundation as part of National Environment Education Week and as a fun class art activity inspired by the recent cinematic release, Oceans, by Disneynature. CDS was one of 300 classrooms across the country to receive a 50-square-foot Fredrix Artist Canvas along with an activity instruction guide to painting a mural and a DVD that included footage from the new documentary. Students were asked to develop a mural related to ocean conservation and the healthy steps that citizens can take to protect the planet. CDS science teacher and department chair Julie Hall says her ninth graders worked together to develop their concept, dividing their canvas into two halves to depict polluted waters, factory smoke and litter on one half and healthy seas, lands and animals on the other. “A core team of six kids came up with the design and laid down the background and the remaining freshemen drew and shaded in the mural,” she says. “I was so proud of their effort. I didn’t ask them to do a thing. They organized and motivated themselves.” The canvas has since been signed by all 38 mural participants and donated as a gift to the school from the class of 2013. It’s All About Etiquette for Summer Program It’s All About Kids’ ongoing etiquette and manners program for kids at University mall in Tampa will continue this summer. Classes require registration but are free to attend and include free accompanying educational materials. The program has covered topics such as body language cues, eye contact and conversation starters, and is designed to provide children real-life examples and vital skills for communication and social interaction. “I am a firm believer that education starts in the home,” says Wanda DeLaRosa, executive director and founder of It’s All About Kids Inc. “Parents are responsible for the instructions of morals, values, social conduct and behavior of their children. As educators, we can bridge the gap between school and the home.” All classes are 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoons, and parents can sneak in a little shopping while the kids children learn valuable lifelong skills. “We have a state-of-the- art technology lab, an on-site library, activity center and an etiquette and manners studio designed for our classes,” DeLaRosa adds. All Children’s Hospital Receives $2.5M Gift Patients at All Children’s Hospital will enjoy the healing benefits of music and expanded entertainment options, thanks to a St. Petersburg entrepreneur and music executive. Bill Edwards, founder of Bill Edwards Presents, Inc., Big 3 Entertainment and Chairman/CEO of Mortgage Investors Corporation, recently announced a $2.5-million donation to All Children’s Hospital for its music therapy program as well as expanded programming and access for the Get Well Network patient education and information system. “The contributions of music therapy in the health care environment are priceless for patients, family members and even staff,” says Luci Weber, child life director. “Music relaxes and soothes, it distracts from fear and pain and brings people together. These things are all very important to children and their families who are struggling through the daily fears and uncertainty of chronic illness.”

The $2.5 million donation will benefit the hospital’s music therapy program and Get Well Network.

A portion of the gift also supports expansion of All Children’s Get Well Network, an innovative media programming system which uses patients’ bedside televisions to entertain, educate and empower kids, parents and caregivers to become more actively engaged in their care. All Children’s was one of the first hospitals in the nation to utilize a pediatric version called Get Well Town.

“This gift will ensure our ability to provide therapies and information that will help kids and their families cope with and understand their medical issues,” says Gary Carnes, president and CEO of All Children’s Health System.
