racking your baby’s growth is more than just monitoring height and weight gain in the early months. Even though babies develop at their own pace, every baby should meet the infant milestones by a certain age or early intervention is needed. Knowing the physical, speech, cognitive, and play milestones for your baby and checking to be sure they are reaching them on time is crucial to ensure that any signs of delay are evaluated by your healthcare provider. Parents do not anticipate that their child will have a developmental delay. However, with 1 in 10 children having ADHD, 1 in 20 having a learning disability, 1 in 88 falling within the autistic spectrum and more than 500,000 premature babies born annually, parents need to monitor their child’s developmental milestones more than ever. Early detection with early intervention is the key to minimizing or eliminating any issues that may arise. An informed parent or caregiver is the best advocate and will have a better understanding of a child’s overall growth and development. All stages of development are important and

should not be skipped if you want your child to progress in a normal sequence. if your child is struggling in a certain area, you can give that area a little more focus and attention until you see the emergence of the required skills. When that skill is acquired, the stage of development is reached. Various play activities and exercises should be provided to the child on a daily basis for optimal skill development. if your toddler is 24 months and you are working on 24-month-old skills when they are developmentally at a 15-month-old level, you are setting your toddler up for failure. The activities and exercises will be too hard, and may cause frustration and avoidance of the activities. For example, if your child’s hand movements are not developed or they are not processing through their eyes efficiently, they will have difficulty with coloring, drawing, cutting and completing simple shape puzzles. A secret to achieving higher proficiency levels is to focus on building a strong foundation of sensory integration skills. This is done through stimulation of the vestibular system, which regulates the integration all of our senses. The

vestibular system can be enhanced by many activities, including: Rocking, Swinging, Jumping, Bouncing, Balancing, Dancing, Walking, Running Sensory integration (also called Sensory Processing) is the brain’s ability to interpret, organize and respond to the information that it receives through the senses for functional behavior. Our sensory system is made up of seven basic senses: smell, touch, taste, vision/ visual perception, hearing/auditory processing, movement/balance and kinesthesia/muscle tone. Our brain receives sensory messages and turns them into responses. This helps us orient to the world around us. it helps us relax, concentrate and move safely throughout our day. The more effectively our nervous system processes the information it receives, the better our responses to the stimulus and the more coordinated or in sync we become with our environment. Paula Tarver and Jeanne Martin are co-authors of Advance My Baby, a how-to manual for academic success, athletic prowess, emotional balance and social acceptance visit www.advancemybaby.com to learn more.

Choosing a nanny can be extremely grueling and taxing on a family, especially for first-time parents. Hiring a nanny should be an orderly process, and each step is imperative. Taking shortcuts, such as not checking references or drawing up a work agreement, will only make things harder. Define Your Needs. This is the first step parents should take. Start with a clear, concise outline that includes the skills, characteristics, education and experience you want your nanny to have, and don’t forget to set a budget. Divide your list into mandatory and preferred categories. Choose Your Recruiting Method. This step is very important. Many families choose to go it alone. And while it may be cheaper, quicker and easier to use an online nanny service or print or online newspaper advertisement, a nanny placement agency is a great choice for families hiring a caregiver, especially their first one. Parents can expect to spend 60 hours on average when recruiting on their own. And many parents just don’t have the time or expertise to do this. A nanny agency will prescreen, administer background and reference checks and send parents the portfolios for the prescreened candidates. The nanny agency is your advocate. A reputable agency has the expertise and resources to administer the most thorough background and reference checks, which is vital to the safety of your family. Whichever method you choose to recruit, an evaluation of the candidate, in-person interview, background/ reference check and written work agreement are all steps you need to follow to ensure you are hiring the right nanny for your family. Let’s not forget taxes. you must be educated and knowledgeable on becoming a household employer. A nanny agency can assist you with this. Many agencies employ their caregivers, taking the stress off of you! Good luck in your search for the perfect nanny! Jill Wilson is the president of Heart Song Caregiving Service which specializes in nanny placement and senior caregivers.

maximizing your

fertility

By Sandy B. Goodman, m.d. During May and June, we celebrate mothers and fathers. But for some couples, achieving parenthood can become a frustrating challenge. in fact, more than 6 million couples in the United States struggle with infertility. Some have never been pregnant while others have a child and are surprised to have difficulty conceiving a second time. The positive news is that the vast majority of couples experiencing problems conceiving are able to overcome their infertility through lifestyle modifications and increasingly successful medical interventions. Several simple lifestyle and dietary adjustments can improve fertility in both women and men. Eliminating tobacco and fitness supplements and herbs, limiting alcohol and caffeine, moderating exercise, eating a fertility friendly diet and achieving a healthy weight all can improve the likelihood of conception. Tobacco contains toxins that damage the egg and sperm. Tobacco users have a 60% higher incidence of infertility. Women who smoke have a significantly higher chance of having a low birth weight baby or stillbirth. Alcohol intake even in moderate amounts, results in a 50% reduction in conception rates. And no amount of alcohol intake during pregnancy is acceptable or safe. Certain herbal medications can damage the genetic material within the sperm and inhibit the egg’s ability to fertilize. Excess caffeine can decrease fertility as well as increase miscarriage rates. Obesity increases the time to conception two to three fold and being underweight or too lean decreases the chances for conception four fold. Eating a balanced diet with whole grains, complex carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, proteins and healthy fats enhances fertility. For women with a low or normal weight, whole milk rather than skim and even an occasional bowl of ice cream can increase fertility. if these measures do not result in a pregnancy, for women younger than 35 who have been without prevention for a year or older than 35 without contraception for six months, seeing a fertility specialist sooner rather than later can identify a problem that can be addressed, resulting in a healthy successful pregnancy. Dr. Sandy Goodman is a reproductive endocrine/infertility specialist at The Reproductive Medicine Group, which has offices in Tampa, Brandon and Clearwater. For more information about The Reproductive Medicine Group, visit www.floridafertility.com.

advIce FOr pOsT-graduaTIOn

...........................

By Mark Heller

in the spring of each year, my school has a luncheon for graduating seniors and their parents. When the time comes for some remarks, i share some words that, hopefully, amount to words of wisdom that the soon-to-be alumni can carry with them. now i’m sharing the essence of those words with TBP readers and, hopefully, lots more graduates.

M

any of the principles apply equally whether a graduate is headed to college or the work world. Do you have some advice of your own? i welcome any additions readers might send my way!

1. Be on Time Being prompt makes an important impression. it’s a signal that you are a dependable, reliable person. And dependability is a crucial attribute for future success. Being dependable will bring you many opportunities, especially when it comes to the world of work. When employers need something done, they go straight to those whom they feel are most reliable and worthy of their trust. Employees who occasionally do something of high quality but are not consistent and reliable do not build trust as readily. Often, they do not wind up receiving the best assignments and the promotions. And further, reliability is something you can control. Talent and ability are not the sole determinants of success. in many situations, being on time really means being 10-15 minutes early. A habit of being early (and reliable) can give rise to many other benefits

as well. if the boss always sees you (or your car) there before she arrives, what message do you think that sends? At college, whether you show up on time (or whether you even show up at all) is up to you. you would do well to realize that successful people do more than show up – even when they don’t feel like it. They do so not because others make them comply, but because they are the right things to do (by yourself and for yourself) in order to be successful. 2. Remember Your Manners Manners are exceptionally important because they create a common ground. They are a fallback when things are new or different. Being polite helps you to fit in anywhere, anytime. Today, good manners may even distinguish you from the crowd because many people do not use good manners – making eye contact, saying hello, please, thank you, may i have, etc. Manners will serve you well, especially in unfamiliar situations. 3. Take a Detour Do it while you can. (Before college, during college, after college, between jobs.) Later in life

other things, such as jobs, spouses, children and mortgages, will keep you from doing it. Travel or volunteer in some place exotic. Work on a political campaign for someone or something you believe in. Do something that will give you great stories to tell. 4. Don’t Procrastinate, Prepare One of my heroes is the legendary basketball coach John Wooden. One of coach Wooden’s well-known sayings is: “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” Preparation allows you ease when it counts. When i was in college, i was in a singing group with a woman named Sarah who had tremendous skills, both as a performer and as a liver of life. She could sing beautifully in every style and was never at a loss for the appropriate, charming, interesting comment in any social situation. When you were talking with Sarah, she made you feel that you were the most important person in the world. We all marveled at Sarah’s ability to do everything so well. She was practically perfect in every interaction. She was a natural. Or so we all thought. That is, until we met her younger, more brash sister Serena. Serena told us all about continued on page 22

the hours Sarah spent studying music, imitating and reviewing, how she spent time in front of the mirror, practicing every gesture. The lesson was not lost on me. Even those who are gifted with extraordinary talent can only make the most of it if they practice, work and prepare. All of the preparation you do will allow you to be confident and appear natural and at ease when it counts the most. Many of you could get away with procrastinating in high school. Guess what? College is harder. you won’t be able to get away with it as easily as you have. Set small deadlines and goals to stay on track. 5. Remember, the Ending Is Just as Important as the Beginning Everyone enters new jobs or experiences with positivity and optimism. But not all people have the grace or foresight to exit with elegance or to resist the impulse to thumb their nose on the way out the door, figuratively or literally. The way in which you exit has enormous impact on the impression you leave. How you exit is how you will always be remembered. no matter how many good things you did while you were there, an ugly exit will leave a lasting impression. 6. Thank People Who Have Helped You your parents, teachers, coaches and mentors have been the well that has nourished your preparation for your future. Keep up with those people and go back to them occasionally. You may find that a drink from that well will replenish, sustain, or propel you in your next steps. And besides, we’d love to hear from you! Mark Heller is head of school at Academy at the Lakes, a Pre-K3 - 12th grade independent school in the North Tampa area. better than me. And it’s my much better half who deserves most of the credit — something she will deny, but i know it’s true. Maybe you’ve already figured this out, but I have no weighty words of wisdom to impart on being a father. i’ve simply tried to set a good example. i suppose, if i had to, i could boil down our philosophy into a sort of 4-G network for raising our family: God, guard, gather and Andy Griffith. God is always no. 1. Church is an important part of our lives and our kids are actively involved in their church and youth groups. We believe a foundation in faith has strengthened us as a family. We’ve tried to guard our kids as best we can from at least some of the many negative influences out there. We are not big proponents of the “it takes a village” philosophy of bringing up baby. We’ve seen the village, and it’s a scary place. We’ve taken a very hands-on approach to parenting, getting involved in their “business,” from schools to hobbies to friends. Parental controls on TV and computers are a must. We gather together as often as we can, whether just walking around the mall or for family dinners. Communication is open and encouraged, especially around the table. These are some of the best times, talking about our days, telling stories, supporting each other and making each other laugh.

William, Patty, Dan, Lilly and Patrick at Al Lopez Park in Tampa.

O

“Take a hot shower.”

n its own, that sentence probably means nothing to you. (Of course, i hope you take showers, hot or cold). But in our house just uttering that sentence makes the whole family smile, snicker and laugh out loud. it was several years ago. My wife and i, our two sons, Patrick and Will, and our then 10-year-old daughter Lilly had just finished dinner. She was telling us about an assignment she was working on: write a step-by-step description on “How to Watch a Movie at Home” it was her rough draft. “Step one, take a hot shower,” she announced. it took a second and a half for this unexpected opening to sink in. Then all of us doubled over in laughter. That phrase is now forever enshrined in the Shaffer Manifest of Memorable Moments. We add new pages to that imaginary book all the time, which makes me feel pretty good as a

father. For me, those are the best things about being a dad. Those snapshots in time — inside jokes that we share just as a family. Our children have grown up in a strange household. Their dad goes to bed at 7:30 p.m. (My morning anchor job with ABC Action news requires i stumble out of bed at 2:30 a.m.) He wears more makeup than their mom (again, the TV thing), and occasionally the kids have their private lives made public on television. Despite my best efforts, though, they seem to be thriving. Watching our children grow into young adults is truly amazing, and has gone by frighteningly fast! My wife Patty and i have been married for almost 23 years. We are raising three beautiful, responsible, caring children. i say “we,” but in reality, my one goal is to try and not screw up the amazing work their mother is doing. My wife has put up with it all — the arguing, the temper tantrums, the talking back. i swear i’m not just saying this. Our kids have all turned out

The TV is always off during dinner unless it’s on. And if it’s on, chances are it’s an old episode of The Andy Griffith Show. A little home-spun southern humor mixed with a good message. The kids sometimes say they’ve grown up in Mayberry. Their mom and dad are big fans and the kids know many of the episodes by heart. Our conversations are sprinkled with quotes from the show. you can learn a lot of lessons on responsibility (Goober Takes a Car Apart; sportsmanship (A Medal for Opie); giving (Opie’s Charity); friendship (Barney and The Cave Rescue); and the list goes on and on. This year, i will celebrate one of those milestone birthdays, a chance to reflect on the many blessing in my life, my greatest accomplishments, and my hopes for the future. And i can distill them down to three: Patrick, William and Lilly. i couldn’t be more proud to be called their dad. But for now, it’s movie night, and i’m going to take a hot shower. Happy Father’s Day. Dan Shaffer co-anchors ABC Action News in the morning and at noon.

super dads of tampa bay BalancIng FaMIly, cOMMunITy and WOrk

Let’s be honest. Dads often get the short end of the appreciation stick. When a singer wins a Grammy, an athlete wins a championship or an actor wins an Emmy, you can just about bet on them thanking mom first. And then maybe dad will get some love too. We here at Tampa Bay Parenting want to make sure that dad gets his recognition. That’s why we’re once again featuring area dads making a difference at home and in the community. Dads are super and we’re shouting it!

Marcus Meyer

Marcus and Erin with children Aidan and Bailey.

Pasco County native and University of Florida graduate Marcus Meyer launched Gator Cleaning Solutions nine years ago and hasn’t looked back. His growing company, which offers commercial cleaning strategies to businesses across the bay area, employs nearly 100. yet, he’s still most proud of his wife and best friend Erin and their two children ages 9 and 6. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? There are so many aspects of being a parent that are truly rewarding so it is difficult to name just one. I love the moments when they don’t realize you are listening and they are talking with their friends or a sibling and they really get what it is to do the right thing. For example, my son was chatting with his friend Jacob in the back seat on the way home from school last week and he was explaining why he let a younger classmate score a goal on him at recess. His explanation was that he had witnessed this kid being picked on earlier that morning and wanted him to have a better day! it’s those small moments when you know somewhere, somehow they are listening to the lessons we try to teach each day. Those moments are priceless! What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? We are an outdoors kind of family and we tend to be on the go almost all the time! Our favorite family

activity is to take our boat to one of the barrier islands right off shore on the gulf. no cell phones or technology, just us and some friends hanging out enjoying beautiful weather and good company! What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? The most challenging part of fatherhood is finding that balance. i’m sure most parents are challenged with the task of working hard to provide for the family but also finding enough time to enjoy the family. My wife and i both work very hard but we are also careful to put work away and enjoy time with each other. That is why i like to coach. i feel like the time spent coaching my son’s teams helps me stay connected, and it’s not only a commitment to him but to all the boys and therefore something that cannot be rescheduled or pushed off until tomorrow! What role model in your life influenced the kind of father you are? My father worked very hard while i was growing up and it allowed for my mother to stay home and raise me and my sister. now that i am a father i can appreciate how difficult it was to work so hard and also be at every soccer game or baseball game. it showed me that i was a priority and that although working hard was important and necessary, family always comes first.

As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? The title of dad or father is a huge responsibility but one i welcome. in our house we share most of the responsibilities and, depending on the day, i could be a disciplinarian or the one packing lunch. My wife and i partner on almost everything and our kids know we are a team. That doesn’t mean they don’t try and get one over on us though. Like any household communication is the key, and we are always trying to improve on that skill. What is something people don’t know about you? When i retire, i plan to sail around the world with my co-captain Erin. i take this dream so seriously that i have much of my route mapped out and enjoy spending time drawing out the plans. i learned long ago that if you document your dreams they’re more likely to come true. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? Tampa is such a great community and has so much to offer families. We love Busch Gardens, MOSi, Florida Aquarium as well as the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. There is no shortage on family activities in the area. in fact, Erin visits Tampa Bay Parenting’s website to find events pretty regularly.

Chris, his wife Melissa and their three boys Ian, Xander and Remy.

From jail to Boys Town to Cornell to the Air Force to the Reserves to the Hilton to stay-at-home dad: Christopher Martin has had an interesting journey. Growing up, he moved a lot and his mom struggled financially. “I remember living in six different places before sixth grade.” As a teen, he ended up in juvenile detention. “It was a significant event in my life and how I raise my boys now. I spent five months and three weeks at the Boys’ State Penitentiary in Eldora, iowa. it took me about three weeks there to realize i might not fit in back home, but I definitely don’t fit in here. it was a scary, eye-opening experience.”

goofing around” for just one more kiss. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? i like taking them swimming and on bike rides. i like reading to them and watching superhero movies. And despite the wife’s better judgment, i also like taking care of animals with them. We have Beowulf, a black lab, two cats, a couple of pigs (guinea size) and a bazillion ducks in the back yard. For the record, i’m not a farmer. Do not believe my wife.

After his juvenile detention stay, Martin went to Boys Town, which would change the trajectory of his life. He qualified for a never-before-used scholarship to Cornell University in upstate new york for Boys Town graduates. He earned a degree in political science, then took a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. The military led him to First Lieutenant Melissa Martin, who stole his heart. now married, the couple have three boys ages 9, 5, and 3. And yes, Martin took his bride’s last name.

What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? not laughing at the boys when they’re doing something wrong but it’s really funny. Seriously, we all have good and bad qualities. i told myself that i would never raise kids like my mother did. She’s kind of my anti-role model. “Do as i say not as i do.” That was her lesson on smoking, drinking and most everything else. Bottom line, time is not the challenge for me. it’s communicating with them as a friend but still maintaining that role as father. Too far one way or the other and i feel you can really mess up the relationship.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? it’s when they risk the ire of “go to sleep or stop

As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? i think back to one of my many faux-pas in my pre-

father days when i asked a stay-at-home-mom, “Do you have a job?” She responded, “i have three kids.” i responded, “no, but what i meant was do you work?” She wasn’t very talkative the rest of the evening. now i understand. My responsibilities are unending. But i’d have it no other way. What advice would you give other fathers? A minister was talking about what is important to a child and he said, “you can’t just take your kid to Disney World for a few days and then be gone the rest of the week. That is not quality time. Quality time is changing diapers, putting bandages on skinned knees, making dinner, having dinner as a family, checking homework, going on walks, singing songs, grounding them when they’re bad, etc. Quality time is quantity time.” Just spend time with your kids. What makes you happy? My boys laughing. My wife painting and gardening. The underdog winning in the movie. A good beer, a good steak and 72 degree weather. Hearing my kids read, watching them dance and making them laugh (which usually involves me getting hurt, so i actually don’t like that at the same time).

jOsepH BarakeT

Joe with sons Joshua and Aiden at their New Port Richey home.

Joseph Baraket has been working in the social services field for 15 years and now works for the Guardian ad Litem program in Pasco County. It’s definitely an emotionally taxing job, but he says it’s rewarding to make a difference in children’s lives. At the same time, the job has helped him be an effective parent to Joshua, 6, and Aiden, 3. “At the end of the day i am happy i have them and happy they have me.” Baraket, his wife Jessica and their two boys have lived in the Tampa Bay area for two years and love it. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? Watching them grow and become interested in things that i enjoyed as a child. i would also like to add that at the end of a hard day a simple, “i love you, daddy,” makes everything i do worthwhile. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? Family vacations are the best. We love to travel and visit the many places Florida has to offer. Most of all we love the beaches. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Every day is a new challenge. Children don’t always

believe that parents only want what is best for them. Trying to get kids to understand that is a challenge. What role model in your life influenced the kind of father you are? My parents and grandparents taught me the value of family and how important it is to respect and take care of one another. i could only hope to pass these same values on to my children. As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? Responsibilities as a parent are never-ending if you want your children to grow and succeed in life. What advice would you give other fathers? Don’t try to mold your children. Let them grow and evolve and become their own person. Simply be there to guide and love them. It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? Time management and communication. i try very hard to manage my time at work so that i can be

home for my kids in the evening and devote all of my attention to them. At times, my job requires me to work evenings and weekends. When that happens, i always communicate with them why it is important for me to be there. My kids always know they are my priority, and i make sure they can trust that when i say i will be there i am. What is something people don’t know about you? i am sentimental. i come across as a tough guy but i am actually a big softy. What makes you happy? Seeing how proud my boys are when they tell me about something they did. They work so hard at everything to make their dad proud and i am. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? The Tampa Bay area has so many great familyoriented places. We love the sports complexes in the area. We have spent many weekends at sporting and entertainment events at the Forum, Raymond James Stadium and Steinbrenner Field. Our other favorite is the beaches.

Paul with wife Suzanne and daughters Natalie and Elena at their Westchase home.

staring at my sleeping angel long after she falls asleep in my arms.

As a pediatric cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, Paul Chai, MD, spends his days at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital operating on kids born with congenital heart defects. As you can imagine, Dr. Chai’s job is both rewarding and stressful. To decompress, he enjoys spending time with his family, watching the Rays play and fishing in the flats of Tampa Bay. He’s been married for six years to wife Suzanne, and the couple has welcomed two children, 6-year-old natalie and 1-year-old Elena.

What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Finding the time to be where you want to be – with them! not being home when they wake up in the morning because of an emergency surgery in the middle of the night doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s certainly no fun. Like most parents, it’s a constant challenge to give 100% to all areas of my life.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? Being able to enjoy the simple activities of daily life, such as giving my kids a bath or reading to them at night, is truly amazing. And i’m having a lot of fun doing things with the kids that i also enjoyed doing as a child.

As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? i want to be a positive role model for my children and to make sure that they know they are loved and that i’ll always be here for them. i also think it’s important to expose my children to as much as i can so that they might find something they are passionate about.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? Just simply spending time with them. i love swimming and fishing with my older child, and I’m having a great time coaching her soccer team. i love giving my little one a bath and having her fall asleep in my arms. It’s so comforting to watch her, and I find myself

What advice would you give other fathers? Whatever you want to do with your kids, do it now. Whatever you want to say to your kids, say it now. Don’t wait for tomorrow. It is often difficult to balance a career with

spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? Having children has made me appreciate my time more. It’s not always easy, but I definitely strive to do the most with the time i have. What is something people don’t know about you? if i hadn’t become a pediatric heart surgeon, i would have loved to be a photographer for national Geographic. i also play lead guitar in “Woosah,” a rock and roll band which is composed primarily of pediatric heart surgeons. What makes you happy? My wife and kids being happy definitely makes me happy. And there are no words to describe the joy of being able to look into the eyes of anxious parents and tell them that their child’s surgery was a success. Being able to give other parents the chance to spend a lifetime with their child is simply amazing. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? Tropicana Field. Let’s go Rays!

cHadd THOMas

Chadd, wife Kristi, son Brendan and daughter Emeline.

Home is where the heart is and even though his children’s acting careers take them and his wife to LA often, the bay area has been home for Chadd Thomas for 24 years. And he’s made a name for himself in the community. Thomas and his wife Kristi are local celebrities as hosts of the Magic Morning Show on Magic 94-9 FM. The couple has been working and spending 24 hours a day together for 12 years. And kids Brendan, 13, and Emeline, 7, having spent their fair share of time on the morning show throughout the years, no doubt got the performance bug from mom and dad. So how do they do it all? Read on. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? Seeing how well my kids behave on set or around other adults is extremely rewarding. They really want to make a good impression and be seen as wellmannered. Also seeing how brave they are to go into an audition or give a performance. i just shake my head and wonder how i am so lucky. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? Hands down, going to Disney World! We love to camp

and often do so at Fort Wilderness — lots of s’mores, campfires and rides on Space Mountain! What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? From the beginning, we have raised our kids to have a voice, to speak out, to ask questions and to draw conclusions, which is good for their mental growth but sometimes challenging when you just want them to say “OK!” What role model in your life influenced the kind of father you are? Simple – my dad. And i think most guys would probably say this. Growing up, my dad was a mail carrier who walked miles and miles every day. Looking back, i realize how exhausted he must have been every day yet he always took the time to play catch, coach my little league team or teach me to fix or build something. It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? i think this is where getting up at 3 a.m. for my job is

both a blessing and a curse. (Suffice to say that after 12 years, we still have to set three alarm clocks every morning!) But we are so fortunate to be home most of the day to help our son with his homeschooling or pick up our daughter at the bus stop then kick the soccer ball around or go for a swim. What is something people don’t know about you? I was once a finalist to be a Power Ranger on TV. There you go. What makes you happy? The Magic Kingdom, ’80’s music and nutella! in fact, eating nutella while trying to sing Depeche Mode while preparing to board Haunted Mansion – doesn’t get any better than that! Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? There’s nothing quite like wandering around ikea for a couple of hours with the family — complete with a round of Swedish Meatballs — except maybe a date night with Kristi at Texas de Brazil or a Moe’s Monday. i guess i like to eat.

Nathan and son Patrick in their St. Petersburg neighborhood.

Growing up with two older brothers and a younger sister was fun, and nathan Cowan wants his son to know the joy of having siblings. “it’s important to me,” says the Venice native. For now, Cowan and his wife are enjoying their time with son Patrick. Like dad, he’s a sports fan and even has some moves. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? My favorite part of the day is when i come home from work and Patrick crawls up to me. it makes all of the nonsense of the day disappear. To have someone who relies on you for everything puts life in perspective. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? Patrick and i love to watch ball games. it doesn’t matter the sport but he really likes football. He has even learned to yell at the television. He also likes to tackle dad. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Balance. i never want the pitfalls of a day at work to be taken out on him. Time management is challenging, too. My wife and i always have to be on schedule so he always has someone there.

What role model in your life influenced the kind of father you are? My father influenced me a ton. I was blessed to have my dad as a coach for my teams and even as my teacher in middle school. My dad taught me a lot about discipline. He was hard, but he was always fair. That’s something i always want to be with my son. i really want to teach him right from wrong. As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? i have to teach him right from wrong, and how to treat people. There are the basics — food, clothing and shelter — but being a father is more than that. i want to make sure my son has the same or better opportunities than i had. What advice would you give other fathers? i haven’t been doing this long but my only advice would be to take as much time with your children as possible. It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them?

i try to take him to daycare in the morning and i give him baths when i’m home. My employer is also understanding with my schedule. i pick Patrick up on Wednesdays and Fridays, and those nights are family nights. They are respectful and don’t call me unless it’s urgent. What is something people don’t know about you? i have a great memory. What is your biggest fear? i don’t have a lot of friends but the few i have are great. My biggest fear would be ruining one of those relationships. What makes you happy? Sports make me happy. i enjoy grilling with friends and watching ball games all day. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? i like going to friends’ houses and kicking it. if i have to pick a place, i would say Harvey’s on Fourth Street in St. Petersburg.

Dan at his St. Petersburg home with wife Megan, daughter Kiersten and son Jack.

new Jersey native Dan Gulick joined the Air Force and moved around, until arriving in Tampa in 2002. While in the Air Force, he was a firefighter, deploying overseas twice and traveling to numerous countries from Egypt to iraq to Afghanistan. Gulick is now in his fifth year with St. Petersburg Fire Rescue. And a big part of his job is making sure other people get to enjoy another day of their lives with their families. That is why he cherishes each day he has with wife Megan, daughter Kiersten, 4, and son Jack, 8 months. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? it has to be knowing that you are directly involved in shaping another human life. Getting to see your children develop and grow is a truly amazing thing. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? Simply put, everything! Whether it is taking a short walk or bike ride, putting them to bed, going fishing or going to a museum, everything we do is special to me. i try to treasure every moment and i believe they do the same. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? it’s knowing that someday our children will not be our

babies anymore. i enjoy having them around every day, and i know that one day they will be out on their own.

to cherish their children and try to build a strong caring family on a group of values that is important to them.

What role model in your life influenced the kind of father you are? My entire family growing up had a huge impact on my views of being a father. it was the typical Jersey family, where everybody is close and has a say in everything. Also, i had two strong males in my father and his father. They lead our family through all the tough times and make all the good times great. i remember being a little boy and thinking to myself, i can’t wait to be like that.

It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? For me separating work and family is different from most fathers. i work for 24 hours, and i am off for 48. i am the primary child care for my children, as are most firefighters. The difficult part is leaving the last 24 hours behind me and coming home to my family after being up all night.

As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? As with all parents, there are hard and trying times. i believe those times are learning experiences. if our daughter makes a mistake ( as all 4 year olds do), i try to use it as a teaching tool to correct the wrong doing. What advice would you give other fathers? i wouldn’t give advice to other fathers. i believe every family does what works for them. i would however give advice to men who are soon to be fathers, and tell them

What makes you happy? Being a father. i love seeing my children grow and learn new things. i enjoy spending time with my wife and all of our friends. Every day we wake up and get to start over. Every day is a new adventure. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? My favorite place to go has to be the waterfront in St. Pete. it has so much to offer at all hours of the day and night. Whether with my entire family or just my wife or just the kids, there is always something to do.

Recently, the GFWC new Tampa Juniorettes teamed with the White House to become a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national program recognizing Americans who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteering. Digital Tool Advances Reading Goals Have you heard about myOn? This digital reader was the subject of much discussion at the Great by 8 to Graduate Reading Summit hosted by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. The reading summit was designed to share with families the goal of ensuring that students are reading at or above grade level by third grade, which the board deems a key benchmark for measuring and determining lifelong success. it also provided an opportunity to introduce parents and the community to a new literacy initiative, Read on myOn, and the myOn reader from Capstone Digital, which will provide free online access to digital books for every child from birth to eighth grade throughout Hillsborough County. “The myOn reader is one of the most exciting projects i’ve ever been involved with,” says Luanne Panacek, CEO of the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and lead organizer of the partnership to make myOn available to all children in the county. “it’s a revolutionary literacy program that personalizes reading with access to over 2,500 digital published books containing reading supports.” The myOn readers is designed to match student interests and reading level with content to personalize the learning experience and forecast future reading growth. An online book collection is available to students for use anywhere, anytime, 24/7. Students simply have to register online to be able to access at home, in their public library or at school. Oldsmar, Safety Harbor Earn ‘Playful City USA’ Titles The bay area was heavily recognized in KaBoom’s 2012 list of Playful City USA award winners, including Tampa, new Port Richey and two north Pinellas communities, Oldsmar and Safety Harbor. The award recognizes these communities’ efforts to increase play opportunities for local children. KaBoom, a national nonprofit organization which promotes its commitment to saving play, created Playful City USA in 2007 to help local governments address deficits in children’s play opportunities in neighborhoods in coordination with mayors, city council members, parks and recreation departments, school districts and community leaders. Presented by The Humana Foundation, Playful City USA is a national program advocating for local policies that increase play opportunities for children. For the city of Safety Harbor, the recognition reflects recent policy decisions that demonstrate a commitment to expanding its focus on family play. The city has replaced five playgrounds during the past seven years and will be purchasing and developing waterfront property to convert into additional play space for youth and families. “We’ve worked hard as a community to have safe, accessible areas for families to play and we’ve designed many of our recreation programs to support our parks and playgrounds,” says Safety Harbor Recreation Superintendent Shannon Schafer. “Being selected as a “Playful City USA” is a real honor and shows how committed Safety Harbor is to all areas of recreation.” Visit www.playfulcityusa.org for more information about the KaBoom Playful City USA program.
