Summer has arrived! Hopefully you and your kids enjoyed some relaxing outdoor time over Memorial Day Weekend! Last month, i took a short trip to see Harris in Hello, Dolly! at the historic Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. i’ve said this time and again but it really pulls on my heartstrings to see my kids doing what they love! i also took some time to see the sites, including the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol Building. i had a wonderful time and look forward to seeing him in his next show.

June is a special time of year for Tampa Bay Parenting. This month marks our annual Baby Guide, where we cover everything new and expectant moms need to know —from protecting your baby in the nursery to why music is so important for your newborn. And don’t forget to check out our product picks on page 46. This month, we also have one of my favorite spreads in the magazine — Super Dads. Each year we ask you to submit stories of dads in the Tampa Bay area that are not only changing the lives of their kids but are making a positive impact on the community. Starting on page 32, we’re bringing you seven dads that are doing just that. With summer at full throttle, learning is probably the last thing on your kids’ minds. However, there are students who take online classes in the summer. With a growing number of teens and parents considering online courses as a full-time educational option, Mark Heller discusses the benefits and challenges of cyber-education on page 26. Lastly, if you’re stressing about summer camp, there is still time to find a great program for your kids. Start by checking out our Summer Camp Guide on page 35 or you can visit TBParenting.com/ SummerCamps for a complete listing of summer camps and programs in your area. i’m wishing you and your family an adventurous and safe summer! Keep us updated about all the fun things you’ll be doing this summer by sharing pictures on our Facebook page. Have a great summer!

We love to hear from you. Don’t forget to become a fan on Facebook and get daily updates, enter contests, share pictures and chat with other families. or couples experiencing infertility, it often seems that everyone is pregnant or pushing a baby stroller. in reality, infertility affects 1 in 8 couples, which means it affects more than 7 million couples in the United States. Some couples have never conceived while others are surprised when they experience difficulty conceiving a second child. The most important factor in overcoming either primary or secondary infertility is recognizing when to seek medical care. For both men and women, fertility declines with age, with the rate of decline beginning at a younger age and occurring more rapidly for women. Couples often delay evaluation and treatment because they feel they have not tried long enough or are worried about the cost or invasiveness of infertility treatmenst; however, delaying evaluation may actually decrease their chances for success. Infertility is medically defined as not achieving a pregnancy during unprotected intercourse within six months for women older than 35 or women who have been pregnant before. The window is 12 months for women younger than 35. Many factors may be responsible for the inability to conceive. Ovulatory, anatomic, immunologic and/or hormonal factors are common problems affecting a woman’s ability to get pregnant. Male causes of infertility usually involve abnormalities of the semen (sperm) parameters.

First Steps

The first step in dealing with infertility is to schedule an evaluation with your OB/Gyn or primary care physician. The evaluation will focus on the characteristics of the menstrual cycle – the length and regularity and awareness of when ovulation is occurring. it is important to review any problems that may have occurred with the last pregnancy and the outcome. Were there problems at delivery or in the postpartum period? Have any problems developed since the last pregnancy (i.e., chronic illness, pelvic infection, fibroids, or endometriosis)?

By w. GreGOry wIlkersOn, Md and sandy GOOdMan, Md

For women 35 and older, it is important to evaluate ovarian function, whether or not a previous pregnancy was achieved. This is because the number of follicles in the ovaries decreases from birth, with a decline in fertility starting at age 30. it is also important to evaluate the male partner as 40% of infertility is due to male factors, 40% is associated with female reproductive issues and 20% is due to a combination of both. The sensitive topic of sexual habits also needs to be discussed — frequency of intercourse, timing, and any problems. A physical exam should be performed, including a pelvic exam. The size and the mobility of the uterus should be evaluated and the fallopian tubes and ovaries should be examined. Certain hormonal measurements will be necessary if your menstrual cycles are irregular. Following the physical exam, evaluation of lab tests, and semen analysis, additional diagnostic tests may be recommended. Gathering the information and reviewing the results typically requires one to two cycle lengths. During this time if ovulation seems to be the problem, ovulation induction may be attempted with a prescription drug. if pregnancy is not achieved within a few months, it is time to see a fertility specialist who is certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

Next Steps

Following your evaluation, your infertility specialist will make treatment recommendations, which might include lifestyle modifications, corrections of an identified medical problem, the use of fertility enhancing medications in combination with placement of the sperm directly into the uterus or more advanced therapies such as in vitro fertilization. Surgery may be considered to remove endometriosis, fibroids or scar tissue to improve the chances for natural conception.

intake. Both partners should limit or eliminate trans fats from their diet and increase foods with antioxidant properties (strawberries, blueberries and other fruits and vegetables). Achieving a healthy weight is important since being overweight or underweight can significantly decrease the chances for conception. Obesity in men can lower free testosterone, resulting in low sperm counts. in addition to avoiding hot tubs, men should not use testosterone or performance enhancing supplements. Although stress does not cause infertility, decreasing stress may enhance the success rate of fertility treatments. Techniques specifically designed to decrease stress levels for fertility patients such as The Mind Body Fertility Program, Fertility yoga and Meditation and Fertility Acupuncture (which do not include the use of herbal supplements) have been demonstrated to be important additions to traditional medical approaches. While the struggle of infertility can be frustrating and stressful, the vast majority of couples who seek treatment and are open to the multitude of options available will achieve their dream of becoming parents. The key to having a successful outcome is to take that important first step. To learn more about the Florida Hospital Tampa Women’s Health Pavilion and how its physicians are providing comprehensive care for women, visit www.fhtampa.org. For a physician referral, call 1-877-482-4362.

A holistic approach to fertility care combining medical intervention with lifestyle modifications offers couples the best chance for success. Toxins, such as tobacco, must be eliminated along with minimizing alcohol and caffeine

music to their brains wHy BaBIes lOVe a GOOd BeaT

..............................................

By COlleen MCGraTH lIlley

Babies love music. i imagine that comes as no surprise to parents who have likely soothed a newborn with a lullaby or a bounce to the beat of a song. But what parents may not know is that active participation in music helps baby’s brain develop. We are each born equipped to respond to music from a remarkably early age and, believe it or not, your baby is attuned to respond to your voice more than any other. Babies’ aural abilities are functional at five months gestation. That means your baby can hear you in the womb about as well as you can hear anyone talking or singing when you have the windows rolled down in the car while driving on the highway. Before your child is born, she knows your voice, hears the pattern of your speech and is ready to respond to you above anyone else at birth. A new study conducted by 11 participating hospitals concluded, “The informed, intentional therapeutic use of live sound and parent-preferred lullabies can influence cardiac and respiratory function. Sound and lullaby may improve feeding behaviors and sucking patterns and may increase prolonged periods of quiet–alert states, thus decreasing the stress parents associated with premature infant care.” Essentially, singing to your baby is beneficial to his health and well-being. i am so often asked, “What can my baby really gain from music class right now? isn’t he too young to learn anything? And why take music in particular?” your baby’s most critical time for brain development is before she is 6 months! During this time, the brain is rapidly forming synapses that help it receive and organize information more efficiently. In fact, our brains are more flexible and absorb information more quickly before age 6 than at any other time in our lives. And infants download that information faster and better than us all. That development is enhanced in many ways, specifically touch, live sound and active visual stimulation. Children at this age learn best through playful activity with a primary caregiver! Through play – the way a baby is naturally wired to learn – baby helps her brain to develop the neural pathways in areas that are designated for certain tasks (i.e., music, language, emotion, speech, gross and fine motor skills). neurologically, music, language and cognitive function are closely related. Language contains pitch, rhythm and patterns. Music organizes those same characteristics with intention, making them easier to separate and remember. This informs not only language learning but teaches the brain about spatial relationships and organization of information. Motor development can be enhanced with the touch of a caregiver and playful experimentation with mimicking. Before 6 months of age, babies’ movements arenvoluntary. Guiding that movement can help them learn control. After 6 months old, when the movements become intentional – grasping, holding, reaching – babies begin to learn to control arms, legs, fingers, and facial muscles through experimentation and copying those around them. Participating in a class designed to incorporate all these elements can be a guide for you as you help your baby grow and develop essential life skills. Even if participation in a music class is not an option for your family, engaging your child in musical play, regardless of your own musical aptitude, will provide baby with an important foundation for lifelong learning. Colleen McGrath Lilley holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Carnegie Mellon University and a master’s degree in music from The Boston Conservatory of Music. She owns and operates You and Me & Music Together.

For parents, there is so much to do to prepare for baby — prenatal appointments, childbirth classes, buying a car seat, and the list goes on and on. in the midst of all these to-dos, it’s important for parents to remember home safety as well. One of the obvious areas of concern is the crib. if this is not your first child, you may already have a crib, but older cribs may not meet the most current federal guidelines issued by the Consumer Product Commission. These guidelines apply to full and nonfull size baby cribs and address slat strength, mattress support, hardware quality and crib testing. Make sure your crib is compliant with the new standards. if you purchase a new crib, make sure it has a Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association certification logo. if no logo is evident, make sure the crib is in compliance with the new standards by asking the retailer for a certificate of compliance — 16 CFR 1219 (manufacturers are required by law to provide retailers with this). When assembling your crib (or if it comes assembled), make sure it is done properly. That means the hardware is tightened, there are no missing parts and the mattress is set as low as possible. Since it’s difficult to know exactly when a child will pull up in a crib, it is better to have the mattress as low as possible to help prevent an accidental fall. There should not be a gap of more than 2 inches between the mattress and frame. Do not place a web cam, wireless or otherwise, on the crib railing. no matter how careful you are you still risk a wire or piece of electronics finding its way into the crib. Web cams are lightweight so purchase a small, inexpensive shelf at a home improvement

Kitchen

in the kitchen, potential risks include burns, cuts from sharp utensils, poisoning from common household chemicals and choking hazards. To reduce these risks: • Cook with pots and pans on back burners and turn handles away from the front of the stove. • Place hot foods and liquids on the center of the table. • Store sharp knives where they cannot be reached or in a drawer with child-safety locks on it.

Bathroom

Hazards in the bathroom include drowning, scalds, falls and poisoning. Be sure to: • Set your hot water thermostat no hotter than 120 degrees F. • Lock medicines and cleaning supplies away, even those in child-resistant packaging. • Never leave young children unattended in the bathtub, even for a moment.

Around the House

As your baby grows, he’ll start developing mobility and coordination, falls pose a significant risk. Prevent these by: • Secure all furniture and cushion sharp edges. • Install safety gates at top and bottom of all stairways.

very couple looks forward to a healthy pregnancy and the birth of a healthy newborn. For the vast majority of women, pregnancy follows a fairly routine course. However, for some, there may be difficulties and challenges along the way – and some of those complications can be the result of a problem with the fetus.

Having a high-risk pregnancy means that a woman has a greater chance of complications because of conditions in her pregnancy, her medical status or lifestyle or external factors. Many times, complications are unexpected and may occur without warning. Other times, there are certain risk factors that make problems more likely. While many complications are unavoidable, with the help of your physician, you can minimize your risks and work toward the healthiest pregnancy possible. Women with high-risk pregnancies often need closer monitoring for potential problems or complications. Fortunately, there are many tests and procedures to monitor the health of both mother and baby. Many of these pose little or no risk and can provide tremendous amounts of information to physicians and expectant parents. Some testing and procedures carry risks to mother, baby or both. For this reason, if you are offered prenatal testing, it is important to ask your physician:

• • • • • • • • • • •

Why is the test needed for your pregnancy? What information will the test provide? What are the benefits of the test? What are the risks, if any, to you and to your baby? What other tests might be used instead? Who will perform the test? Where will it be done? How long does it take to get results? Will the test results require additional testing? What are your options based on the outcome of the test? What are your options if you choose to not have the test?

“There are noninvasive prenatal tests that pose no problems to the fetus or to the mother,” says Karen raimer, MD, director of the obstetrics and gynecology residency program and assistant director of maternal-fetal medicine at All Children’s Hospital. “And those tests may offer some insight into any genetic issues with the baby.” Advances in technology have helped improve the care of both mothers and unborn babies. Being as healthy as possible before becoming pregnant and getting early and regular prenatal care are important ways to take the best care of you and your developing baby. All Children’s Perinatology Specialists take care of mothers with high-risk pregnancies and coordinate care of their newborns after delivery with other specialists at All Children’s. that’s my boy not everything makes the baby book. Everyone remembers baby’s first word, first tooth, first real food but other things are sometimes left out. in mid-June 2012, when my youngest son was 11 months, he hit one milestone that made the baby book and another that i was forced to leave out but feel like should have been written about extensively. The first occurred one afternoon. i had been working on his walking for two months. Each day i would arrive 30 minutes early to pick up our oldest from school so my youngest could walk around the playground with one of those plastic baby walkers that helps teach babies to walk. in the beginning, he was out of control. He would stumble a few feet, the walker would fly out in front of him and he would face plant onto the concrete. i have to admit, it was funny. And no, i don’t think it makes me terrible, just honest. His problem was he was moving his upper body faster than his lower body. His balance was off, which is the hardest lesson for a baby. But as the weeks went on, he got it. Using the walker, he would stroll from one side of the playground to the other (at least 25 yards in each direction) with the greatest of ease. Every parent waiting to pick up their child noticed his improvement and began mentioning that it would be any day before he was walking. A month later, they were still saying that. no matter how many times i tried to get Ben to walk on his own, he refused. He would not even try, simply plopping onto his butt instead. i was annoyed by his lack of progress and by the lack of humor he was bringing me. However in mid-June, Amy placed him in the middle of the living room and asked him to walk to her. And he did. Well, kind of. A first step is not what most people think. He did not turn into Carl Lewis overnight. He shuffled one foot forward and then dragged the next foot a few inches before falling face first. It was clumsy

and not poetic, but it was a first step nonetheless. Plus, i got my face plant fix! It was a true monumental moment in his life — one for the baby book. But it was not the milestone that grand day.

it came that evening. He had been battling a nasty butt rash for days so whenever we could, we let him crawl around naked. (Parenting is so glamorous!) Up to that point, the only news coming out of naked baby crawling around the house was a few loose turds hitting the floor. On this night, however, it happened. It finally happened. He found his penis! Amy and i had been discussing his disinterest in his penis for months. From what i understand, most baby boys grab it the moment it is exposed to fresh air. But our youngest never did. not when we changed his diaper. not when he was in the bath. never. Then on that fairy tale of a day, he sat in the middle of the living room and discovered it. He played with it. He picked at it. He inspected it. He tugged on it. He moved it around. And he wouldn’t let go of it and it became creepy. So i put his diaper back on. Someone needs to create a page in a baby book dedicated to such events! in the great annals of his life, this will be one of his greatest moments, far more important than his first step. Men are not led by their minds, which is why speaking was not as important. nor are they led by their physical prowess, which is why walking was not as important. Everything they do is for the glory of that little, err, big organ. it was a monumental day for my son. (Son, if you are reading this in the future, you probably want to kill me. Sorry dude. Please, please, please don’t let this story be the reason you toss me in a state-run home when i get old.) nline courses are here to stay. Whether they come packaged as distance learning or virtual courses, whether they are entirely self-directed or involve heavy interaction with teachers and peers, they are a significant part of our educational landscape. As with most things in life, this phenomenon brings with it both opportunities and challenges. in this article i will not directly address online courses at the college level or for job training. rather, i will focus on the pros and cons of online courses for middle and high school students.

Benefits Convenience and Flexibility: This is the most cited benefit of online courses. Online courses rarely require students to do specific things at specific times, giving students the power to do the work when the time is right for them. if you’re not a morning person, no problem! if you function well long after school lets out, all the better! if you have to travel, your class work doesn’t suffer as long as you can find an Internet connection wherever you are. The flexibility to allow for all kinds of schedules makes online courses a great option for homeschoolers and for students who are pursuing any activity at a level that requires significant commitment. Students who are working to develop their athletic skills need to spend many prime hours in training. Online courses provide the flexibility to enable this work. Similarly, students with deep, professional aspirations in the arts also find the flexibility of online work very empowering. The three to five hours a day necessary for practice do not generally work well with the normal rigidity of school hours. The ability to have great flexibility in how and when to do your school work allows for the commitment some high-level endeavors require. Individualized Pacing: Online courses are generally much more adaptable to the skills and

needs of the individual than the social setting of school often permits. in online courses, the pace of each learner need not be hurried or held back by the rest of the class. it’s more about you and less about the group when you’re online. The type of playback features and the ability to return to concepts for review at your own pace also help make online courses more user-friendly for some types of learners. Improvement of Technological Proficiency: Online courses present both the opportunity and the necessity that students utilize and become better at using technological tools. Whether it’s in video chat, editing, or other areas, online courses push students toward effective communication through tech. Lifelong Learning: The future will likely hold many online options for continuing education and job training in most every field. Online courses offer a more efficient utilization of resources, and that means they’ll be sticking around for a while. Learning how to learn in this style will be increasingly important for students of every age. it is for this reason that my school, a school that believes deeply in cultivating face-to-face, in-person relationships has also implemented a policy that requires each student to complete at least one online course prior to earning a high school diploma. Prevention of Summer Learning Loss: Whether the purpose is acceleration, remediation, or just earning credits toward graduation, taking an online course in the summer is an option i highly recommend. All the flexibility involved can make it be a great addition to any student’s summer.

Challenges Not Optimal for Every Learner: Online courses reward students who are: • Strong readers because the majority of online coursework is written and good reading comprehension skills really help. Students who thrive on face-to-face interactions and do better

when they really like a teacher may find online courses too dry or uninspiring. • Independent and highly motivated students may find the individualization of onliwork empowering. Those students who need prodding or who do not tend to plan well often fail to complete the online course in the time allotted. • Resourceful and motivated. Motivation is rewarded in the online setting. Outreach to teachers and fellow students really enhances the experience, but they can be harder to accomplish in a virtual community. As online education advocate Tom Snyder puts it, “Blogs, tweets, podcasts, webcasts, online chats, discussion boards, and virtual study jams are all part of the online mix. Success in an online course often depends on how connected a student feels to his instructor and fellow students.” College Admission: Colleges (especially selective colleges) do not want to see online courses used as a refuge or a means of avoiding instructors or courses offered by the high school. However, if a student takes an online course that is not offered at the school or takes the online course to schedule something else meaningful at school (an AP class or orchestra participation), the courses will be viewed in a positive light. Too much of anything, even a good thing, can be bad. i would hate to see the proliferation of online options replace the valuable experience of human beings coming together in person, seeing and sensing each other’s body language, tone and nonverbal communication. A very significant piece of the power of education lies in having the experience of engaging in the give and take of great conversation. That is not easily replicated in a virtual world. The task of raising the young is a very human-intensive endeavor and taking too much of the face to face out of every student’s experience will likely have significant consequences. I hope we can utilize online education as an enhancement not a replacement for the brick and mortar classroom. ook both ways when crossing the street. Don’t talk to strangers. report bullying. These are all messages that parents drill into their children’s heads. now there’s a new safety message to add to the list. never give out your personal information. With the rise of the internet, adults hear all the time about the dangers of giving out their personal information. But many are not as careful about protecting their children’s Social Security numbers and other personal information. Today, 1 in 10 children is a victim of identity theft and local law enforcement is betting that number will rise. A recent study found that iD thieves target children 51 times more frequently than adults. Thieves use children’s identities to purchase homes and cars and open credit accounts. Children are an easy target because they do not typically start using their information until early adulthood when applying for college, loans or their first credit card. That’s why experts advise that it is never too early to check your child’s credit report. Tiffany Montano knows firsthand how the bad guys cross the line and prey on children. The 25-year-old mother of two was just 15 when her family discovered someone had used her Social Security number to obtain a driver’s license. Montano recalls the frustration she and her parents felt. Ten years ago, her parents had no

idea where to report identity theft. She says her parents literally dug up originals of every personal document, including her birth certificate, school records and shot record to prove their daughter was the real Tiffany Montano. So what are the warning signs that your child’s identity is in the hands of fraudsters? • You or your child is turned down for government benefits because those benefits are already being paid out under the same Social Security number. • The IRS sends a notice that you can’t claim your child as a dependent because that same Social Security number was used on another return. • Collection calls or bills for products or services you did not receive or order. Experts say child identity theft is more difficult to resolve than adult identity theft in part because it often goes undetected for months or longer. On average, it takes 334 days to detect and 44 hours to resolve. next year, Florida parents could have access to another tool in their anti-identity theft arsenal. Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services recently authored Senate Bill 566. its aim is to provide parents an effective tool to prevent identity theft. SB 566 enables parents or guardians to create and then freeze their child’s credit records, which would block thieves from using it. if SB 566 is enacted, Florida will be the second state in the nation to enact such legislation. A similar bill passed last year in Maryland.

Protecting Your Child’s Identity Hillsborough sheriff ’s Cpl. Bruce Crumpler leads the economic crimes unit and endorses the following tips. • Teach children to not share their personal information. • Don’t list your child’s Social Security number on paperwork when it’s not required, including doctor’s office paperwork and school forms. if the school says it’s mandatory, ask who the information will be shared with and how it will be protected. • Lock it up. Guard your child’s identifying information the same way you guard your own. • Monitor your child’s credit. Annualcreditreport. com allows one free credit report a year for each credit reporting agency. if there is a report, look for errors which may indicate fraud or misuse. you want to correct it before he applies for a loan, a job or needs to rent an apartment. • Keep your antivirus software updated. While there are fee-based services that offer to protect your identity, credit bureaus offer a free service that is known as a credit alert. All you have to do is sign up. Fraud alert messages notify potential credit grantors to verify your iD before extending credit in your name. if you desire a pay service, do your research before signing up. Check to see whether complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb. org. Also, find out exactly what the fee covers to determine whether you truly need what they are selling. Kevin and Galen in the lunch courtyard at Tampa Prep aratory School.

Photo by Amy Pezzicara, Pezz Photo

The fact that Kevin Plummer grew up to be an educator should come as no surprise. it’s practically the family business for Tampa Preparatory‘s head of school. His mom was a professor at Colorado University and his dad was a long-serving principal for Denver Public Schools. He has two sisters, one who works in text book publishing and one who is the director of admission for St. John’s School in Houston, Texas. His wife Jennifer was a teacher for many years. Daughter Galen should take note (seriously, she needs to study hard to follow in her family’s footsteps). What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? The best part is the gift of watching your child grow, mature and develop. i honestly had no idea how much fun it would be. Every day is a new day of growth and opportunity. i cannot believe how fast it is happening. She has become a little person and watching that transformation has been nothing short of incredible.

hopes. nothing is better than the time we get to spend together. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Balancing home and work can be challenging. i love my family, and I love my job. I sacrifice a lot of family time for work and there are more days and nights than i like that i just don’t see Galen. Jennifer is a super mom and super woman. We would not be able to have the family life we have without her support, understanding and efforts. Who influenced the kind of father you are? My parents are the best role models i have had. My mom taught me so much about caring from you heart, having patience and staying calm. As a mom she was always clear in her expectations and generous with her time and praise. i get my sense of humor, people skills and determination from my dad. He was always a fun and funny guy but you also knew when he meant business.

to treat people and help her understand how she should be treated and what to do when she is not being treated well. What advice would you give other fathers? Teach your children about intrinsic motivation and how to persevere through adversity. Build their confidence and make sure that they understand that with passion, effort, commitment and sacrifice they can do anything! It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? Honestly, not well at the moment! On the weekends, i try and do as much as i can with the family. Luckily, i am ever hopeful Galen will come to Tampa Prep. When she does, she better be ready to eat lunch with dad at least once a week!

What is something people don’t know about What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? you? i live for daddy-daughter time. We usually go to Five i am a terrible swimmer. in fact, i can barely swim As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? Guys together and watch a movie on the iPad. These at all. i also doodle and play lacrosse. i must provide for my family and contribute to are the times i treasure because she just opens up home life as well. i also must teach Galen how and talks about everything — school, her friends, her ............................................................................................................................................................................................... James Mcilwain, DD, had tunnel vision. He wanted to become a dentist and specialize in pediatrics. Fast forward 35 years and the Air Force veteran, husband (52 years and counting) and father is in practice with his daughter, also a pediatric dentist. And his son works in the office, too. The practice has grown since the first day when there were just seven patients. The office is family-oriented, with a nephew, son-in-law and an Emory dental classmate of Dr. Mcilwain working together, treating patients like family. The original office expanded. Next a second office was added. With two busy locations, Dr. Mcilwain says, “i count my blessings daily, love going to work and have no retirement plans.” What is the most rewarding part of being a dad? Watching the kids grow up and be productive and successful.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? Go on vacation. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Being consistent and avoiding comparison with your childhood. As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? i see my role as provider, role model and life example. What advice would you give other fathers? Be adaptable. you have to deal with change and unexpected intrusions to your schedule. it is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them?

I leave work at the office — physically and mentally. if choices are necessary, you should favor your family. What is something people don’t know about you? i’m a native Floridian and spent my early years in South Florida. What makes you happy? i enjoy helping others. i also like to be surrounded by caring, loyal, supportive friends. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? it’s a tossup between restaurants and the airport. Frequently, eating dinner at one of our favorite eateries includes planning about where to go for our next good meal. The airport is quiet, clean and orderly. it provides the door to a new adventure, even if it is business related.

keITH wIll eTT

Keith, his wife Tricia and their two boys, Aidan and Eastin, in front of their South Tampa home. Photo by Amy Pezzicara, Pezz Photo

Keith Willett met his wife in the perfect place for a native Floridian —the beach. The moment they saw each other they knew they were meant for one another and they were married a year later. Soon after, came two boys who are now 11 and 8. now his days are filled with work as a financial advisor, lacrosse on Saturdays and occasional date nights with wife Tricia. Who influenced the kind of father you are? I have had two men who influenced me in my life. One is my father and the other is my longtime friend Emory. They both have shown me the importance of God, family, and being a kind person. They both share the ability to roll up their sleeves and get the work done. As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? i am directly responsible for the kind of people my two sons become. i am learning, as our boys get older, it becomes harder to stay connected. So i try

to take advantage of the little things and try to stay involved. What advice would you give other fathers? We were first in our group friends to have children and did not know what to expect. Lots of people have great advice but i think you have to just try things out and see what works for you and your family. What is something people don’t know about you? in 2008, we purchased a newly constructed home from a well-known South Tampa builder. Shortly after moving in, we saw signs that something was not right. Unexplained allergic rashes, chronic sinus infections and excruciating headaches. it was not until 10 months later after a local news report on Chinese drywall that i investigated further to find the home was constructed with this toxic drywall. Our only option was to move out right away. This was emotionally devastating to my

family. After almost 20 months and after much debate, we decided the only way to get back in the home was if i took on the project. During this turmoil we sure found out who our true friends were. i have missed many Saturday games and family events, but i did so knowing i was working to provide a safe home for my family. i thank the people who helped us. When we finally moved back in, the kids felt like it was an early Christmas. What is your biggest fear? i think my biggest fear in life is that my boys grow up and do not know how to be kind, respectful and generous and to be firm in their convictions. i remind myself often these are things they learn from our actions not our words. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? Tricia and i have come to enjoy going on an occasional date to Timpano and then Cinebistro to catch a movie.

Jon and twins Hailey and Livy at their home in Clearwater.

Married nearly 15 years, Jon Scheinman and his wife Allison moved to the Tampa Bay area in 2001 to escape the cold northeast winters. Soon after, they welcomed their now 8-year-old twin girls, Hailey and Olivia (Livy). “Life may have been easier if Livy was born without special needs, but we have learned that the hard is what makes it great,” he says. Livy was born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, is nonverbal and cannot walk or sit up. The proud father says, “She has changed our lives in so many ways and has made us reevaluate what is important in life.” The family started Livy’s Hope with a mission to give gifts of inspiration to children with medical needs and their families, provide community education and raise money for epilepsy research. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? When i watch the impact my girls have on people, it takes my breath away. Livy has never spoken a word but has changed the lives of more people in eight years than i have in my entire life. The way she inspires others and draws them to her is like nothing i have ever seen. Hailey’s joyous personality is infectious.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? We love to have what we call the family sandwich. it is basically a big group hug with Allison and me as the bread, Hailey as the peanut butter and Livy as the jelly. it usually ends in a tickle war and nonstop laughter. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? it’s balancing the needs of both my girls. Hailey can tell me exactly what she wants and how she feels. Livy requires an extra form of intuition since she is not able to communicate with us in the traditional manner. Who influenced the kind of father you are? My grandmother’s wonderful smile could light up even the darkest of rooms. She was everyone’s friend and treated each person she met with respect and compassion. Her family was her prized possession. She taught us how to be better people just by being herself. i try to approach fatherhood with so many of the values she instilled.

As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? i always strive to face my responsibilities head on. i accept them as they come and consider them the most important thing i do every day. Allison and i work as a team. Our family doesn’t function unless we have both a mom and a dad present. How do you make time for your family? i am fortunate enough to have an incredibly understanding boss. She is all about work life balance and that has made the past eight years of ups and downs with Livy much easier for my family. The harder part is fitting a life’s work into the mix. Livy’s Hope is where we have the ability to make a difference in people’s lives so it is hard to balance that with everything else going on. What makes you happy? The smiles on my girls’ faces fill me with complete joy. There is nothing like seeing them snuggling together when they first wake up. Also, Allison and i relish the nights when we get to go on a date. We always fall in love all over again.

Dr. Gayoso with Antonio Jr. and Samuel in the backyard of their St. Petersburg home.

Born in Gainesville, Antonio J. Gayoso, MD, is the son of Cuban immigrants. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is an active member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He is the chief of plastic surgery at St. Anthony’s Hospital and Bayfront Medical Center. Dr. Gayoso established his plastic surgery practice in St. Petersburg in 1998 and strives to give back to the community. He has participated in Faith in Practice, an international goodwill mission, providing plastic and reconstructive surgical care in Guatemala. Additionally, Dr. Gayoso is on the local board for the American Cancer Society and participates in My Hope Chest, a charitable organization that provides breast reconstructive surgery for breast cancer survivors without health insurance. Dr. Gayoso enjoys cycling, running, and triathlons. He loves attending soccer games, swim meets and piano recitals with his wife Jodie and sons, Antonio Jr. and Samuel. What is the most rewarding part of being a dad? it’s that lump in your throat when your kids do something great. For me, this happens at piano

recitals, soccer games, karate practice, and just when they say something clever. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? We are avid movie watchers. Currently, we are into superheroes. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Entertaining my sons with something other than a computer game. Who influenced the kind of father you are? Whether i try or not or like it or not, i feel like i am a lot like my father. Mostly, i like it. As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? The most obvious responsibility is to provide financially for my family. But the most important responsibility is for me to model good behavior for my children. What advice would you give other fathers? Listen to your wife.

spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? This is a struggle for me because i run a solo plastic surgery practice and the demands on my time are difficult to control. I try to severely limit my night and weekend work. My goal is to arrive home while there’s still daylight. What is something people don’t know about you? As a medical student, i travelled to Ecuador, where i hitchhiked into the rainforest, climbed a mountain (Gua-Gua Pichincha), and ate guinea pig (cuy). What is your biggest fear? I was sick with the flu this year and had to cancel and reschedule an entire week of surgeries and office appointments. I guess that I would fear being disabled in some way. What makes you happy? I find pleasure in so many ways, such as art, music, movies, food and, of course, my family. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? i like working in my yard and being home with my wife and kids.

........................ GeOF F Vandal

Geoff, Tyson and Tori in their South Tampa backyard.

aphy Photo by Anné Phillips, Anné Phillips Photogr

Originally from the new England area, Geoff Vandal moved to Temple Terrace when he was 2. He graduated from King High and USF, married wife Mindy and moved to Atlanta for work, where his children Tyson and Victoria were born. in 2008, the family moved back to Tampa to be closer to family and are happy to be home. What’s the most rewarding part of being a dad? The top of my list would have to include the conversations with Tyson and Tori that leave Mindy and i shaking our heads about how wise beyond their years the two of them can be – like little yodas. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? it’s a laundry list but family bike rides downtown are awesome. We bought a pedal trailer for Tyson when he was 3 and attached it to my bike while Mindy had Tori in a toddler bike seat. When Tyson outgrew it, Tori inherited it and we bought him a bigger one. if we could, we’d ride them every weekend either downtown to the Columbia restaurant at the Tampa Bay History Center, Curtis Hixon Park or head south to Ballast Point Park. i even added a couple of fishing pole stands and we’ll drop a line in the bay

every now and then. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Consistency is so important and it’s not always easy. Who influenced the kind of father you are? My mom and dad are my role models and made me into who i am today. They were always there for me growing up and still are today. As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? Above all else its teaching Tyson and Tori values and helping them find the right path to take. To be there – sometimes literally – when they fall and help them get up and on their way. What advice would you give other fathers? Always try and see the big picture and put yourself in your kids’ shoes. Sometimes we all lose our cool, but i’ve always had more success by taking Tyson or Tori aside and having a talk in a small voice rather than engaging in a debate in big voices.

How do you make time for your family? When i’m home i do my best to be present. it’s not always that simple as our devices can keep us working 24/7 if we let them. The more nights i can be home and at the dinner table the more involved i feel in both the big things and the small stuff. What is something people don’t know about you? i went to college wanting to be a sports broadcaster and wound up in the insurance business! As much as i loved everything sports, the closer i got to it the less passionate i was about making it a career. From the day i started with MetLife, i knew i found my niche. What makes you happy? Seeing others succeed both in business and in life. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? My hidden South Tampa treasure – Dairy Joy, of course! Hole in the wall old school soft serve ice cream spot on Manhattan with all the classic treats and its legendary 1950s pricing.

Mike, Gracyn and Lola at John Chestnut Sr. Park in Palm Harbor.

Born in Dunedin and raised in new Port richey, Mike Lewis met wife Jenn in high school, marrying her four years after their graduation. They now have two beautiful girls, Gracyn Kenzie, 2, and Lola Eloise, 4 months. They were born the same day two years apart! A nurse, Lewis is working toward becoming a physical therapist. What is the most rewarding part of being a dad? Watching my daughters grow and learn is so amazing. The simplest thing like learning to roll over and learning to hold the bottle themselves is so awesome. not to mention the first time Gracyn said, “I love you, Dada!” What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? Just spending time and playing with them is so much fun — anything from chasing Gracyn around the house or swimming in the pool to floor time with Lola. What is the most challenging part of fatherhood? Being the father of two girls, this i feel is still to come for me. i pray about this every night. i hope to teach my daughters that they are valuable. i hope to teach them the difference between a boy who lusts and a boy who loves. i hope to show them these things by how i treat and love my wife.

Who influenced the kind of father you are? Unquestionably, that would be my own father Kenneth Lewis. He showed me things that you can’t just learn — humility, patience, perseverance and hard work. He is a great dad and an awesome Pop Pop! As a father, how do you view your responsibilities? Making sure my daughters are safe and taken care of is my responsibility. What advice would you give other fathers? The other day Gracyn decided it would be a good idea to wash her hair with her yogurt! I was upset at first but quickly laughed about it and took some pictures. i would tell other fathers to realize that these moments are memories that you are making with your children. Should you get upset and yell or laugh about it and give her a bath? It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them? When school starts again, it will be harder to have the time that i do now. Options like online classes are

helpful to be home with family and still be able to continue my education. What is something people don’t know about you? i love to cook — breakfast, lunch or dinner. it’s just the cleaning up that i don’t like so much! What is your biggest fear? My girls are still innocent and don’t know about the sometimes cruel world we live in. it is scary to think about just how much has changed even since i was in school. Unfortunately, i can only shield my girls from the world for so long. What makes you happy? The blessing of being a father and husband is what makes me happiest. Simply spending time at home with my family is enough. Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa? We recently visited the Glazer Children’s Museum for the first time and really enjoyed it. Also, Gracyn enjoys seeing and learning about animals so i believe a trip to Lowry Park zoo and the Florida Aquarium is in our future!

New West Tampa Mural to Honor Area’s History Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced that the city of Tampa will paint the elevated water tower in West Tampa to welcome residents and honor the history and culture of the West Tampa community. “This is an opportunity to tell West Tampa’s story, which is so ingrained in the fabric of Tampa,” says Mayor Bob Buckhorn. “it is just one way to honor the heritage and culture of the West Tampa community that continues to shape our city.” The painting resembles an oversized cigar wrapper, a nod to the cigar factories which brought so many new residents to the area at the turn of the 20th century. “Welcome to West Tampa” will be painted across the water tower and will be able to be seen from interstate 275. Brothers Peter and rolf Goetzinger, known as the Artistbrothers, have been chosen to paint the large-scale image. The projected cost is $33,800 and will be paid for by the city of Tampa.
