With more than 15 years of animal experience, 10 of which have been with marine mammals, I’ve participated in countless medical procedures, animal rescues and rehabilitation of marine mammals. One of my favorite roles is leading the Manatee Care team. I’m thrilled to play a part in rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured manatees back to Florida waters. My most favorite role, however, is being a mother to 2-year-old Myla. The love for animals runs strong in the Burns family—my husband Mike Burns is also an Associate Curator, and Myla attends Zoo School! Myla loves participating in mock manatee releases at Zoo School and being just like her mom. ANNNA MARIA ISLAND A DAY TRIP BACK IN TIME

nna Maria Island is only 55 miles from downtown Tampa, but it feels like a world away. As soon as you cross over the bridge onto the barrier island, you are transported to a bygone era when beach towns weren’t crammed with large chain stores and mammoth beach hotels and condos. “There are no high-rises,” Chamber of Commerce President Terri Kinder points out; building-height restrictions were written into the island’s charter and contribute to the easygoing, Old Florida feel. We hopped on the ANNA MARIA ISLAND TROLLEY to explore the three cities that make up the island and discovered why locals plant roots here that run decades deep and why visitors return again and again.

we're on a BOAT TWO UNFORGETTABLE FAMILY TRAVEL EXPERIENCES ON THE WATER

Taking a longboat to the Bornean jungle.

Story and pictures by Michelle Schomp, Retired Toddlers

16

Henley was 3 and Jagger was just a year old when we made last minute plans with BorneoAdventure.com to fulfill my desire for an off-the-beatenpath excursion. Our guide picked us up from Kuching for an hours-long drive, bumping along what he referred to as “massage road.” Eventually, we came to a dock, where a rickety longboat and a member of the Iban tribe were waiting for us. We boarded single file onto makeshift seats and revved up towards the jungle. Portions of the small river were so shallow that the tribe member had to use a large stick to push the boat over the rocks. A couple of hours later we arrived at the Iban village deep in the Malaysian rainforest. We went to their longhouse to meet the local children and chief, who graciously shared with us homemade rice wine. While our guide served as our interpreter to the Chief, our toddlers had no problems communicating with the local children, maybe not with words, but by playing tag and running around together. We ate some of the most delicious open-fire flamed fish and rice we’ve ever had—cooked inside bamboo! At night, we dozed off to the sounds of orangutans chatting in the distance. It was an experience we’ll never forget.

1 Jagger tries his hand at a felucca sail. 2 Off our boat along the Nile taking a bathroom and swim break 3 Our Egyptian sailing crew

Sleeping on a Felucca down the Nile We spent 24 hours sailing down the Nile River on an Egyptian felucca with two local crew guiding our family of four. We played, ate and slept on a small communal mattress area. When we needed a bathroom break, we sailed to the bank and jumped off. Since the Aswan High Dam was built, the Nile no longer has crocodiles (we don’t think!), but it does have strong currents. You can swim safely near the shore in some areas, but in others the current can easily flip a boat. The water in this region is so clean that our guide from RealEgypt.com reached down, scooped up a glass, and drank from it. You would never want to do this downstream near Cairo, where locals openly throw in bags of household trash. Onboard, the kids spent the day acting like Moana and Maui! Sleeping on a boat with no real railings raised our nerves, but with Jagger in his handy pop up Kilofly tent (one of our most useful travel purchases) and Henley sleeping between us, we cozied up under a nice thick blanket with the stars providing nightlight. It was dreamy. Not luxurious, but the most connected we had felt in a while.

four local dads are using ingenuity to create and inspire By Tara Payor, Ph.D.

Recently, a dad shared, “I’m setting the ground floor for my child.” As a metaphorical thinker, I appreciated the perspective. While it’s true there’s nothing like a mother’s love, it’s also true fathers lay strong foundations for children. From the foundation, the ground floor, children build lives. What will make up the subsequent stories? I spoke with Tampa Bay dads who are making ingenuity part of the ground floor. SIT DOWN: MEET MEET FADI SHAMMA AND JIM FRIEDMAN

Cofounders of Sense a Life and neighbors, Fadi Shamma and Jim Friedman started their company because they wanted to put an end to the tragic deaths resulting from children being forgotten in car seats. Shamma, father to Jacob (6) and Emily (3), and Friedman, father to Sophia (12) and Danny (7), state: "We always heard about these deaths. Now we offer a permanent solution." Prototyped in the garage and in research and development for three years, the company just received four patents--including one making the technology standard in new vehicles. The Sense A Life pad installs into car seats in seconds. Transferrable, it engages with the main device, which is placed by the driver's door. The main device communicates through loud vocal and mobile alerts. Shamma, a practicing pharmacist, and Friedman, an electrical engineer, aren't in this for the money. “Our mission is solving the problem because we are dads," they say.

Recently, Shamma (middle) and Friedman (far left), along with Shamma's wife, a pediatrician, enjoyed sharing Sense a Life with thousands of attendees at the Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association show in Orlando.

LISTEN UP: MEET GRYMES CANNON

Grymes Cannon, expecting his first child with wife Lauren, co-founded Silent Rhino after attending a silent disco in 2009. Boisterous, he understands noise pollution issues. “The silent disco concept came from Europe,” Cannon explains, “and it eliminates disturbances. Meaning, the party goes on.” The entrepreneur, who founded Silent Rhino with Donnie Burkett, another businessman passionate about entertainment, appreciates how silent disco encourages conversation. “It’s not about isolation. Guests converse more because they’re not competing with a loud DJ.” Cannon believes Silent Rhino makes social experiences more rewarding for attendees because it breaks traditional limitations like the DJ’s music choices. “Advancements allow us to broadcast three different channels and play three different genres of music—all while 500 people dance and 50 conversations take place.” Cannon is ready for a new dance partner in his crew: “Being an older father, at 44, I’m embracing my path. I knew in my 20s I wasn’t mature enough for fatherhood before my 40s, as I was trying new ventures while living in Los Angeles, Miami and New York City.” He’s taking cues from his own dad, also an entrepreneur. “He couldn’t coach Little League, but he made it a point to be present whenever he could, which was to 90% of my games.” It’s the first time this dad-to-be has to think about someone other than himself. “This is Grymes 2.0, and everything I do now is 110% for my family.” He’s proud of the company he’s helped build. “Silent Rhino’s here as a strategic partner. It’s as easy as plug-and-play and as beautiful as four generations boogieing together.” Having worked with organizations like the Tampa Museum of Arts, Tampa Bay History Center, OnBikes, Gasparilla Music Festival and Riverview’s Winthrop Arts, he’s intent on promoting music and dancing for all ages. Silent Rhino supports the silent movement—one Cannon will appreciate with a newborn as 3 a.m. jam sessions soon take on new meaning.

STRAP IN: MEET GABE DEFEO

Gabe Defeo, father of three, is a Scientific Systems Network Administrator. More simply, he’s a hurricane hunter for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). Gabe started in the Air Force and applied for his present position while stationed in Iraq. “Even before this job, traveling has been the norm,” he says. During hurricane season, the family knows Defeo may leave at a moment’s notice on one of the three NOAA aircrafts Defeo flies in and maintains, and typical flights are eight hours, not counting pre- and postflight duties. “There’s always excitement, adrenaline, and several gasps,” Defeo says. “You figure out your comfort level.” Though accustomed to their situation, Defeo’s family worries while he’s gone. “I don’t breathe until his plane lands,” says his wife, Jessie. Defeo is sensitive to this and always texts before take-off and at landing. “Communication is key,” Defeo believes. He and Jessie speak openly with their 7-year-old about the nature of Defeo’s job; they believe openness decreases stress. The couple’s 7-year-old loves seeing the airplanes with friends. “It’s every little boy’s dream,” Defeo says. Of their two oldest (24 and 25), one is in aviation also. “It gets in your blood a bit,” admits the proud dad. “It feels good knowing you did something that positively influenced them.”

RIDE ON: MEET BRAD BOGER

Teaching children to ride a bike is a parenting rite-of-passage. Backaches don’t have to be. Brad Roger, always tinkering with inventions, created Bike Tail, an ergonomic, aluminum handle for parents to hold on to while pushing a bike. Beyond wanting to save his back, he wanted to prevent injuries for his daughter. “Kylee inspired Bike Tail. After back pain from bending and holding the seat, I went to the drawing board,” Roger says. Bike Tail’s prototype was made of pipe and bent to its current shape: “I welded it, put it on her bike, and she was riding with confidence the next day.” Fortunately for less handy dads, Bike Tail requires no tools and attaches to most bikes’ shaft. “One Bayshore Boulevard jogger shared how she can push her son when he’s tired while still getting her exercise.” Enjoying Tampa Bay with his family is vital to Brad. They love water skiing, the beaches and watching the Lightning play.

moon bayJELLIES TOUCH TANK ALL NEW AT THE FLORIDA AQUARIUM By Sandra Morrison, The Florida Aquarium

eat the heat this summer at The Florida Aquarium with an all-new exhibit—the exciting interactive experience called "Moon Bay." Just in time for the 2019 summer season, this unique touch experience officially opens Saturday, June 8. The star of this touch experience, the moon jellies, are named for their translucent moon-like circular bells. These mesmerizing, graceful creatures have inhabited our oceans for more than 500 million years. The opportunity to gently interact with jellies is only the fourth of its kind in the United States. You can see the moon jellies drifting gracefully through the water in the Florida Aquarium’s 2,000-gallon habitat, their bodies glowing with the illumination of changing colored lights. Guests will be guided through an interactive experience and learn fascinating facts about these animals, including the importance of moon jellies to our ocean planet, and why moon jellies and their relatives aren't "jellyfish." (The correct term is "jellies" as they aren't fish). Above Moon Bay will be a state-of-the-art digitally mapped projection wall that will bring guests on a journey through the waters of Florida and beyond. This dynamic visual, and Moon Bay, will transform the guest experience as they enter the Aquarium from the main entrance. The Florida Aquarium's mission to entertain and educate guests, while inspiring them to protect and restore oceans and waterways, is forefront in this opportunity to touch moon jellies. This is the second major exhibit to open at the Aquarium in the past year, following the debut of Heart of the Sea. Heart of the Sea is a renovated 100,000-gallon habitat and is the Aquarium's second largest aquatic display, second only to a 500,000-gallon Coral Reef habitat, where guests can see more than 400 animals, including endangered sea turtles, sharks, coral reef fishes, underwater coral trees and more. Connecting our guests to the underwater world and inspiring them to care about every animal in the ocean, including jellies, is core to our mission. The Florida Aquarium is proud to enhance the visitor experience with another educational and exhilarating exhibit. Once this out-of-this-world guest experience opens up, we hope families will visit Moon Bay to enhance their child's education, engage these beautiful animals and visit often. The goal is for guests to walk away a little more inspired and knowledgeable about aquatic life and moon jellies in particular.

id you know you can go nose-to-nose with manatees at the Zoo? Your kids can marvel at these gentle sea cows in the Zoo’s serene Manatee Mangrove located in the Florida realm. It’s also the perfect backdrop for a quality Instagram photo of the kiddos observing these mesmerizing giants. However, there is so much more to the Zoo’s manatee program. The adorable manatees you see at the Zoo are actually patients recovering from severe injuries and sickness at the Zoo’s David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center. We are thrilled that after extensive renovations to the Critical Care Center, the Zoo is once again supporting manatees in need of care. The center is the first nonprofit acute care facility for injured, sick and orphaned wild manatees. Did you know that the manatee patients you visit at the Zoo don’t actually call the Zoo home? Once they are healthy again, it’s our goal to return them to Florida waters. Guests have the amazing opportunity to see our hardworking manatee care team look after these animals. You can watch life-saving care in real time – that’s pretty cool! An iconic Florida species, manatees face serious threats from pollution, habitat degradation and human conflict, including boat strikes. Severe red tide emergencies along Florida’s coast have further imperiled these threatened marine mammals. Manatees are resilient, especially mother manatees that continue to heal while still caring for their calf. As a mother, that bond and strength is something special to see. As more rescued manatees come to ZooTampa’s Critical Care Center, families will have the opportunity to observe these graceful, slow moving sea cows as they recover and rehabilitate. Our devoted care team is devoted to providing advanced, specialized medical treatment and rehabilitation for manatees that are orphaned or injured by boat strike, entangled in fishing line or suffering from cold stress. As an Associate Curator for the Zoo, I’m passionate about being a voice for Florida manatees. There is nothing quite like caring for an animal back to health every day and then releasing back to Florida waters. The moment they swim away and you see their snout come up for air is unforgettable. We can co-exist and ensure they’re around for future generations. As a mother, I want to encourage my daughter to be mindful of these majestic animals and protect them in the wild. It’s up to all of us.

splish, splash, play!

TOP 5 PLAYGROUNDS WITH SPLASH PADS AROUND TAMPA BAY TO KEEP COOL THIS SUMMER Story and pictures by Anna Giblin, Playground Guru

1/ JULIAN B. LANE PARK

This tops our list for a few fab reasons. First: two covered, age-appropriate play areas that include slides, climbing walls, balancing equipment, music play, sit and spins, and great soft AstroTurf to prevent any major boo-boos. Second: The splash pad is fenced-in with a secure play area and clean family bathrooms. An easily-accessed touchpad controls the splash pad, helping conserve water and energy. The neon orange fill-and-dump bucket is a big hit. As well as covered picnic tables, chess, checkers and ping pong tables, free admission and tons of parking, this park also offers amazing views of the Hillsborough River.

2/ WATER WORKS PARK

1

WE LOVE FOLLOWING ANNA GIBLIN'S ADVENTURES ON INSTAGRAM AT @PLAYGROUNDGURU BECAUSE SHE NOT ONLY SHOWS US NEW PLACES TO PLAY, BUT FUN TIPS TO MAKE OUTINGS LESS STRESSFUL.

2

Coming in at number two, this great park gets points for location. It’s super close to Ulele and Armature Works so you can grab a coffee and relax while the kiddos splash and play! Water Works Park has the coolest climbing jungle gym/ropes course in the center of the park, a fun seesaw that holds up to six kids, climbing gear with two slides (more geared towards toddlers), stand and spins, and of course: the splash pad. The coolest feature besides the huge dump bucket is the water gun station. These green water shooters were designed to turn off when pointed outside of the ‘water zone,’ so don’t worry about getting soaked while sitting under one of the many covered picnic table areas! You’ll also find several little fountains and splash areas on the perimeter of the splash pad.

3

4 3/ SPLASH PAD AT THE FLORIDA AQUARIUM This splash pad/ playground does not disappoint with covered play areas for all age groups, slides, climbing equipment, shaded benches for supervision, and AstroTurf throughout to help with the transition from splash pad to playground. The splash pad has fountains, creative play areas, squirt guns and a water tunnel. It’s also completely free for Aquarium pass holders and those who paid regular day admission to the Florida Aquarium. The surrounding area offers a café, a super cute beachy bar, bathrooms, several covered picnic tables and eating areas. 4/ KATE JACKSON PARK Fabulous number four—get ready to splash through the lion’s den! This cute splash zone has several lion statues that the kids love to play around while soaking up the sun. The playground is naturally shaded by large oak trees and includes swings, slides, climbing equipment, picnic tables, monkey bars, tunnels and bridges. You’ll find bathrooms close by and easy parking as well.

5/ CURTIS HIXON WATERFRONT PARK

Rounding out the list at number five, this spacious playground is in the heart of Tampa, steps from the fountains of Curtis Hixon Park. Grab the bathing suits and splash after a slide, spin or stroll down Tampa’s Riverwalk. This great spot has climbing equipment, pretend play areas, slides, two merry go rounds, picnic tables, sit and spins, a seesaw and shaded benches. Also, according to Tampa Parks and Recreation, the surfacing is scheduled for replacement when the new shade structure gets installed this summer!

one small step one giant celebration

SUMMER EXHIBIT AT MOSI CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APOLLO MOON LANDING

By Anthony Pelaez, MOSI

n July 20, 1969, the world held its collective breath as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first walked on the moon. It was a landmark event that demonstrated how an inspired nation could develop new technologies, solve engineering challenges, and work together to break free from planet Earth on humanity’s journey to the stars. The United States proved that a shared dream could be made an exciting new reality. At the very heart of NASA’s Apollo program was a nation of young people excited by the prospect of exploring the new frontier of outer space. Families and teachers shared and supported their enthusiasm knowing that it would take an educated generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians to continue making new discoveries. Armstrong’s words upon stepping on the lunar surface, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind,” rang true in 1969 as they do today. “One Small Step,” the summer exhibition at MOSI, is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon. Combining meaningful historic elements with continuous hands-on science and engineering workshops, “One Small Step” is an opportunity for families to share the significance of the first moon landing. MOSI guests who witnessed the first steps on the moon in July of 1969 can reminisce with younger family members as they explore a collection of Apollo memorabilia including a working replica of an Apollo computer, a space pen used to save the Apollo 11 mission from disaster, and a full-scale diorama of a 1969 living room where families came together to watch the historic event. Guests can also come face to face with a moon rock, experience the smell of moon dust and join Buzz Aldrin as he saluted the US flag planted on the moon. After exploring the past, guests of all ages are invited to take part in mini workshops such as air-pressure rockets and space hovercraft. Guests will also be treated to daily pop-up space demonstrations on why you shouldn’t leave your spaceship without a space suit and the destructive power of crashing meteoroids. Of course, MOSI guests are welcome to make the day all about space exploration by traveling the night sky in MOSI’s Saunders Planetarium or living on the Moon in Mission: Moonbase. MOSI is proud to partner with NASA to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 to inspire a new wave of space explorers. NASA is looking to recruit a new generation to build a permanent lunar colony and land humans on Mars in the next few years. MOSI hopes to help launch the dreams and ambitions of future Mars explorers this summer.

ep. It’s that time of year again: hurricane season arrives June 1. That means it’s time to get that hurricane kit together. You may have heard me talk over the years about what you should have in your kit, but if you’re a new parent, that list has just changed a bit. Take our morning meteorologist Grant Gilmore’s kit. He has had this for years, but now that he and his wife are parents for the first time, he (and maybe you, if you have a new arrival in your family) might need to add some items that weren’t needed before. Remember, you need to be prepared to be on your own for a week as power could be out, roads could be impassible and simple trips to the store may not be that simple. The biggest thing on your list would be DIAPERS, diapers and more diapers, but don’t forget about CLEAN, POTABLE WATER. Water that you bought last year may not be as fresh as you would like it to be for your little one, so it’s a good idea to freshen up that water

Y

BOBBY DESKINS AND FAMILY

PLASTIC ZIP TOP BAGS. I compartmentalize a lot of my items in Ziploc bags to help keep things organized, but also to protect them from water damage. You never know what conditions are going to be like when you have to open your kit. The more things you can keep dry the better.

FOLLOW BOBBY AND GRANT AT WTSP.COM

Remember, hurricane season is six months long. How will your kids needs change over that period? While you may not have had an addition to your family it’s always important to do a quick evaluation of your kit. Has anything expired? Do the BATTERIES IN YOUR FLASHLIGHT still work? Just take 30 minutes to review what you’ve got.

Take a peek at just a small portion of Grant Gilmore's kit. 32

Remember PORTABLE CHARGERS, and keep in mind that the internet may be down if the power is out. My kids watched so many videos during Irma, that they were hardly aware of the weather going by outside. Movies can help distract them and calm their nerves. If you are lucky enough to have a GENERATOR, make sure you know how to use it, that you have enough fuel for it, and that you run it outside. It would be wise to invest in a COMBINATION SMOKE/ CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR to help keep your family safe. The list can go on and will vary with your family’s specific needs, but don’t feel overwhelmed. Take a little time now to think about how your family would fare without power for a week, what you would need and then stock up over the next several weeks. If you make a plan now, it will be much easier and much less stressful to implement that plan if the need arises. Here’s to a quiet hurricane season!

supply. Remember—it’s 1 gallon per person per day for a week. That means my family of five needs 35 gallons of water, and that’s without taking formula-making into account! BABY WIPES always come in handy for your little one, but when the power is out, they can also be used for the rest of the family to freshen up a bit. We recommend that you fill up your bathtub with water before the storm. This water is not to for drinking, but to pour into the toilet so it will flush if the water has been cut off. However, if you do this, keep the bathroom door shut as a bathtub full of water could be dangerous to a little one roaming the house. Don’t forget a FIRST AID KIT, CHILDREN’S MEDICATIONS and a few bins of CLOROX DISINFECTANT WIPES. Also remember things to keep older kids occupied; GAMES, MARKERS, PAPER, CARDS and, of course, their ELECTRONICS are a must.

Looking for a once-in-a-lifetime family experience this summer? How about taking a dip with manatees or diving for scallops? It’s all in your own backyard at the Plantation on Crystal River - a hidden gem along Florida’s Nature Coast, just 80 miles north of Tampa. Joining the family fun this summer is a brand-new, lively and colorful children’s splash pad, located directly on the river, and a new sand volleyball court, right near the corn hole and croquet. This charming resort has remained a popular escape for more than 50 years and is home to a full-service marina and Adventure Center, 18 holes of golf, lagoon-style riverfront pool, Aveda spa and three restaurant outlets – something for everyone! Crystal River is the only place in the world where snorkelers can interact with the West Indian Manatee in their natural habitat. The Plantation Adventure Center offers this “bucket list” opportunity to swim alongside the endangered species. The manatees gather in the constant 72-degree waters of the Crystal River and Kings Bay, especially during the cooler winter months. As a summer tradition, many families visit the Plantation to go scalloping, sometimes compared to an underwater Easter egg hunt. Scalloping season runs from July 1 through September 24 and is like snorkeling, but with the simple addition of a mesh bag for storing a harvest of scallops. With more than 1,600 feet of seawall, overnight guests can tie up their boats at any of over 80 spaces right outside their room and hit the Gulf on their own – or Plantation on Crystal River can set families up with a number of scalloping captains who know all the hotspots. When scallop seekers return from a long day on the water, West 82 Bar & Grill will prepare the day’s cleaned harvest for dinner. JUNE 2019 TampaBayParenting.com

SUMMERTIME

AND THE READING IS EASY

Fun ways to improve reading skills and avoid the summer slide By Courtney Cairns Pastor

ith vacations, camps, outdoor adventures, playdates and relaxed daily routines, the summer break from school can turn into a break from reading as well. The Scholastic Kid & Family Reading Report found that 20% of kids surveyed read zero books during the summer. But the summer months are a crucial time for kids to exercise their reading abilities. Many studies show that students who read infrequently or avoid books entirely in the summer see their reading abilities stall or drop significantly. When they return to school, many have lost core reading skills and struggle to get back on track. But you can turn a child’s summer reading into a fun experience for the whole family. Corbett Prep teachers are encouraging families to view summer reading as a way to celebrate reading rather than an extended homework assignment. During the academic school year, Corbett Prep teachers commit to developing a climate that ignites a love of literacy, and they extend that approach into the summer.

W

istock.com/joey333

HERE ARE SOME TEACHER TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS TO ENSURE YOUR KIDS KEEP FLEXING THEIR LITERACY MUSCLES THIS SUMMER

RELAX YOUR DEFINITION OF HOLD A COMPETITION. Some kids “BOOK.” Children can gain the benefits respond well to challenges and contests.

of reading from many places beyond traditional books. Graphic novels are a great place to start. Combining illustrations and text captivates visual learners, Corbett Prep teachers say, and has proven to help students with reading comprehension. Cookbooks also provide unconventional reading opportunities. Find a recipe for your aspiring reader and have him or her read it aloud while you cook together. Taking a road trip this summer? Try an audiobook for the drive. Audiobooks are valuable for inspiring readers, building vocabulary and increasing comprehension. If you need suggestions, check out the list of books that won the Audie Awards, which honor excellence in audiobooks and spoken entertainment in many categories.

Design your own or follow an existing one. Several challenges offer rewards that may motivate reluctant readers. The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge allows students to log minutes online, unlock digital rewards and help donate books to kids in need. The Tampa Bay Rays works with local libraries to reward kids for reading a certain number of hours, giving them prizes when they reach different bases. Barnes & Noble offers a free book for kids who complete reading journals during the summer. Discuss books and articles together. Have your family read a book together and hold your own book club. Or start small with an article everyone reads that they can talk about at dinner. Corbett Prep teachers provided families this summer with access to websites that have familyfriendly news articles available.

LET YOUR KIDS LEAD. Take your kids to the library

or bookstore and let them choose something to read that appeals to them, even if it means getting a book that you may consider too young or easy. It’s important to remember that if it interests them, they are more likely to read it. And just having books around the house makes a big difference. Two professors from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, conducted a three-year study on the “summer slide.” Professors Richard Allington and Anne McGill-Franzen found a much higher level of reading achievement when students had books readily available to read at home. Students who read during the summer gained as much as a month of reading proficiency. It’s like an athlete, Allington said when the study was released in 2010. A hockey player who hangs up his or her skates for three months in the offseason loses skills. The same goes for readers. So think of it as helping your children work on their reading fitness. An approach that includes creativity and fun will turn summer reading into an activity of their own choice rather than something they have to do.

TRY A CREATIVE CAMP. Summer reading camps often incorporate games, activities and crafts that bring to life the books campers read. Corbett Prep’s CAMP IDS offers reading-related camps for all ages. Prekindergarten campers enjoy story time and activities that tie into letter recognition or the book’s theme. “Wondrous Writers” campers discuss how authors connect with their readers and apply the same strategies as they write their own books at camp. Middle school students can sign up for “Teen Magazine,” where they write movie reviews, editorials and features – and read, critique and edit others’ work.

SUMMER

10 WAYS TO PROTECT LITTLE ONES AROUND THE WATER By Anu Varma Panchal

lorida is Numero Uno in so many ways—beaches, Disney, gorgeous weather, the oldest city, the Space Coast, and so much more. But here’s one distinction we wish we didn’t have: In Florida, drowning rates for children under age 5 are more than double the national average and higher than any other state in the nation. Every year, as the temperatures rise and pools and open water beckon, babies and toddlers enter the water unsupervised and drown. For every child who drowns, four more are hospitalized for near-drowning. These are preventable tragedies. Michelle Sterling, St. Joseph’s Children’s Wellness and Safety Specialist, has these 10 suggestions for parents to ensure that families make the good kind of memories around water this summer.

F

3

4 5 6

7 8 9

Designate a water watcher when you’re at a pool gathering. In a crowd, people often assume someone else is watching the kids; never make that assumption. Instead, choose one adult to put their phone away and do nothing but keep their eye on the kids in the pool. After 10 minutes, trade the job with another adult. Install a pool fence with a self-closing gate and door alarms that will sound if a child gets into the pool area or leaves the house, particularly by the door that takes them directly outside to the pool area. Test the alarms to make sure that they are working properly. Teach children to swim. If money is a barrier to swimming lessons, consider that children ages 6 months and above are eligible to receive a swim lesson voucher in St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Safety Store. Criteria are that they must be Hillsborough County residents enrolled in one of the following: Medicaid, Hillsborough County School’s Free Lunch Program or SNAP-Food Assistance Program. Learn CPR so that if an emergency does occur, you can help stabilize the child until help arrives. People can register for infant and child CPR classes at BayCare.org/ Events. If you are out on open water, make sure that everyone on board is wearing a U.S. Coastguard-approved lifejacket. Visit uscgboating.org/ to get detailed instructions on how to choose a lifejacket. Empty kiddie pools and buckets when not in use and turn them upside down. Children can drown in as little as one inch of water. For this reason, install toilet lid locks if you have a new walker and make sure bathtubs are drained. Teach children to ask permission to swim. If a toddler or young child is missing, head immediately to your pool (or any ponds or open water around your house) to check there first. Fish toys and rafts out of your pool when you’re done swimming so that a young child won’t feel tempted to jump in and retrieve a favorite item.

Go on an old-fashioned Florida getaway and explore Weeki Wachee Springs! Family Fun contributor Anna Tataris DeJesus shares her family’s experience: "If you have a little one who absolutely loves mermaids like we do, this is a great stop. It’s been around for decades and still draws crowds young and old. At the Mermaid Theater, which is slated to re-open this month after extensive renovations, you can watch “mermaids” displaying their beautiful moves in the crystal-clear spring. The shows are definitely what most people drive to see, but make sure you pack bathing suits to enjoy Buccaneer Bay, the kiddie pool, the lazy river and some pretty big slides that drop you into the waters of Weeki Wachee Springs. For more of an adventure, rent a kayak or canoe and take a 3-hour trip in the clear Weeki Wachee River where you can enjoy wildlife up close. If you live in Tampa, this trip is a little more than an hour away. Learn more at weekiwachee.com"

JUMP IN THE WATER'S GREAT

THE YMCA OFFERS COMMUNITY RESOURCES TO IMPROVE SWIMMING SKILLS By Lalita Llerena

here’s no question summer is here, and if you had any doubt, just step outside. As you look for ways your family can escape the heat and humidity, remember to keep safety at the top of your mind. Jumping into a pool is the perfect antidote to the sticky heat of a summer day, but drowning can happen nearly anywhere with standing water. As a parent or caregiver, you can equip children with the tools they need to be confident in and around water. “It’s best to get your child in the pool as early as possible,” says YMCA of the Suncoast Aquatics Advisor Lisa Warren. “The more comfortable they are in the water the easier it is to teach them the skills. Swimming skills can also be practiced in the bath by blowing bubbles, getting their face wet or floating on their back.” The Y is the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming. In fact, did you know the Y introduced the country to the concept of group swim lessons more than 110 years ago? The YMCAs of Tampa Bay offer a swim lesson program designed to help participants reach their goals under the guidance of nationally-certified swim instructors. You can register for one of eight stages under three swim categories depending upon age and current swim ability.

T

Is your little swimmer between 6 months to 3 years old? Then, you and your child can take the Swim Starters classes which develop water enrichment and aquatic readiness. Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, prevent accidents and plan for emergencies.

Preschoolers ages 3-5 may be ready for Swim Basics but kids ages 5-12, or anyone 13 and older, may need to start here as well. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water.

School age kids, teens and adults who can already swim comfortably for 15 yards or more can sign up for Swim Strokes. Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique. Instructors cover front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. More advanced swimmers will learn the major competitive strokes.

THIS CHART MAY HELP YOU DECIDE WHICH CLASS TO REGISTER FOR. You can also take your child to a nearby Y to complete a free swim test and talk to an aquatics associate. Find the Y closest to you at ymcatampabay.org. Whatever stage your child fits in, swim lessons at the Y provide the health benefits of exercise, opportunities to bond with family and friends and the sense of accomplishment when learning new skills. So, jump in and swim safely!
