Roar with Dinosaurs and Soar with Drones this Summer at MOSI
by Janet White, MOSI Director of EducationThis summer, get ready to embark on an adventure that will transport you back in time and forward into the future, all inside MOSI, Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry. From the prehistoric wonders of the Jurassic era to the cutting-edge technology of tomorrow, two new experiences at MOSI will get imaginations roaring and soaring—in kids and adults.
Roar into the Past: Brick Dinos
Step into a world where dinosaurs once again roam the earth, but this time, they're ingeniously crafted from LEGO bricks! Brick Dinos has stomped its way into MOSI, bringing amazing brick-by-brick re-creations of these magnificent animals to Tampa Bay.
From a toothy T. rex to a majestic flying pterodactyl, the exhibit features dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes, spanning the skies, oceans and earth.
LEGO artist Warren Elsmore teamed up with a paleontologist to meticulously bring to life
some of the mightiest creatures to ever walk the planet—ranging from amazing miniature scenes to a life-size encounter with a 12-footlong raptor-like dinosaur called Masiakasaurus
Elsmore’s creations have traveled the world, and MOSI CEO John Graydon Smith worked with him to bring Brick Dinos to Tampa Bay for the first time ever. “While he was spending hundreds of hours building the creatures in Brick Dinos, Warren Elsmore wove real scientific knowledge into each creation,” Smith says.
“You’ll not only get up-close with incredible dinosaurs, but you’ll see them flying, swimming and stampeding in a re-creation of the world that looks just like it did when they lived in it 65 million years ago.”
The adventure doesn't stop there. With more ancient activities, including building your own LEGO masterpiece, digging for treasured dino bones and stepping into the footprint of a mighty dinosaur, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
ROAR & SOAR
Soar into the Future: Flight Club Drone Zone
As you marvel at the wonders of the past, don't forget to take control of the future by flying a real drone! Flight Club Drone Zone presented by Suncoast Credit Union is MOSI's latest permanent addition, offering you a hands-on experience with the technology that's shaping our world.
Guests of all ages can take control of real drones—discovering the basics, completing skill challenges or even racing each other— with guidance from a MOSI educator always close by. This new drone experience and Brick Dinos are both included with MOSI admission.
Through videos and displays of drones that are designed to help with different jobs, the exhibit showcases many new careers that are taking shape using drones all around the world. Kevin Johnson, President and CEO of Suncoast Credit Union, said that’s one of the reasons they partnered with MOSI to create this experience.
“Drones are changing the way we live our lives, from enhancing agricultural efficiency to enabling innovative search and rescue operations. They’re not just streamlining deliveries or entertaining us with spectacular aerial displays—drones are paving the way for new learning and career paths,” Johnson said.
“We’re excited to partner with MOSI to make drones more accessible to the Tampa Bay community, as they continue to create new opportunities and experiences that we can all benefit from and enjoy.”
The result is a dedicated indoor drone space where trying to fly a drone yourself is not just allowed—it’s encouraged!
This summer, whether you're exploring prehistoric times or holding the future of flight in your hands, an adventure of creativity, curiosity and discovery awaits you at MOSI.
WFLA News Channel 8 News
Anchor Josh Benson was among the first to explore Brick Dinos with his family. Pretty much the ultimate #girldad, Benson recently launched the “Daddy Daughter Diaries” where he shares his adventures in Tampa Bay with daughters Brooklyn (4) and Bella (8).
“We wanted to bring an uplifting segment to the newscasts that parents and kids could relate to,” Benson says. “The news can be far too serious at times. And our lives revolve around our kids, especially at this age. We wanted viewers to see what was out there for their families as well as discuss trends the younger kids are into. These are all shot on iPhones. Tara and I edit them at home. It’s just a fun way to showcase life as parents in the bay area!”
The segments air every other Friday on WFLA News Channel 8 at 4 p.m. and then again at 10 p.m. on the CW Tampa Bay. You can also follow the Bensons’ adventures on their new social profiles:
Where to see DINOSAURS in Tampa Bay
by Laura ByrneNational Dinosaur Day is June 1, and what better way to celebrate than to go nose to snout with these ferocious (and not-so-ferocious) creatures? While we won’t find dinosaur fossils in Florida—this mass of land we call home didn’t emerge from the ocean until a whopping 35 million years after the dinosaurs went extinct, according to the Tampa Bay Fossil Club—there are still many awesome ways to experience a day of a prehistoric fun.
Big John, the world’s largest fossil triceratops at Glazer Children’s Museum
WHERE: 110 W. Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa
If you and your kids haven’t had the chance to see Big John, this summer is a great opportunity to meet him. This record-breaking dinosaur fossil was discovered by paleontologist Walter Stein in the Hell’s Creek Formation in South Dakota and brought here to Tampa by local dad and philanthropist Sidd Pagidipati, who owns the dinosaur. glazermuseum.org
Dinosaur World Florida
WHERE: 5145 Harvey Tew Blvd., Plant City
You can’t miss Dinosaur World when you drive along I-4 in Plant City. Make the pit stop to walk among the dinosaurs, cool off in their splash pad, play on their dinosaur-inspired playground and even dig for fossils and gems. dinosaurworld.com
MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry)
WHERE: 4801 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa
You can see a replica of a diplodocus dinosaur on display inside MOSI along with the popular “Recylasaurus Rex” located outside of the museum. But, that’s not all that’s roaring at MOSI! At the newly-opened exhibit Brick Dinos, you can create your own Jurassic brick dinosaurs. Mosi.org
M.A.P.S. Museum
WHERE: 7650 Orchid Lake Road, New Port Richey
The Museum of Archaeology, Paleontology, and Science, Inc. (M.A.P.S.) is a unique place that houses artifacts from Egypt, Greece, Rome, Africa and the Americas. But, they also have dinosaur bones on display, including a dinosaur egg. The museum is open on weekends. Mapsmuseum.org
Worth the Drive:
Florida Museum in Gainesville
The Florida Museum features the “Florida Fossils: Evolution of Life and Land” exhibit that features an internationally acclaimed fossil collection. Kids can see some of Florida’s first mammals and marine creatures in a unique display and even the jaws of the extinct Megalodon! floridamuseum.uf.edu
Orlando Science Center in Orlando
See replicas of ancient sea creatures and dinosaur fossils, including a ferocious T-Rex, at the DinoDigs exhibit.
The Dinosaur Store in Cocoa Beach
This cute indoor activity on the East Coast offers an entire section filled with replicas of dinosaur fossils and dinosaur sculptures. They also have a new exhibit featuring the Terror Bird, which roamed Florida more than 2 million years ago.
Worth the flight:
Dinosaur National Monument
Are you heading out west this summer to Colorado or Utah? Consider driving over to Dinosaur National Monument, which spans the two states. Our favorite experience was the Fossil Quarry Wall on the Utah side of the park where you can see thousands of dinosaur bones embedded in a carved-out wall of an ancient river bed. The hiking is pretty incredible too!

Building Children Who Give: Brick by Brick
by Tara Payor, Ph.D.If your child has celebrated their first birthday, you’ve surely made the parenting rite-of-passage—stepping on a LEGO. Since 1940, when the interlocking pieces with countless configurations were invented in Denmark, families have enjoyed the ample learning and imaginative play opportunities afforded by the colorful plastic bricks. LEGO’s global stronghold is attributed to benefits like their support of developing kids’ fine motor, problem solving and STEM skills. Pretend play made possible by LEGO promotes development in emotional, social, cognitive and language domains while immersing kids in worlds of their own creation.
BRICK BY BRICK
John Fontana, who grew up fascinated with LEGO bricks, opened South Tampa’s Bricks 4 Kidz location in 2014. DurIng high school and college, he spent summers working with kids at various camps. Post graduate school, after years of working in a travel-heavy position, Fontana realized the business potential in blending his passions for working with children and LEGO bricks. A decade into his entrepreneurial venture, business is secure enough for entering a mission close to his heart— starting a nonprofit. Enter, Kids Love Bricks.
NEW BUILD
“Bricks 4 Kidz has worked with Title I schools for years, and I’m excited to launch Kids Love Bricks so that we can provide programming to lower income kids who don’t otherwise have opportunities for engaging in creative play with LEGO bricks,” says Fontana.
BASEPLATE
A graduate of Nativity Catholic School and Jesuit High School, Fontana’s spark for community service was ignited young by serving at food pantries during elementary school to more in-depth charitable service during high school.
“At Jesuit, we attended an overnight camp for kids with muscular dystrophy,” he says, describing it as a formative experience. “We spent five days with the kids and forged relationships with them and their families.”
The father of four-year-old twin girls believes kids must understand many families are struggling: ““I was blessed growing up with two parents who were able to provide and care for me. If one has the ability to help, one should.”
Fontana’s long-term goals for Kids Love Bricks include seeing students from his alma mater, Jesuit, running free summer camps for underprivileged youth. “Summer camp is an opportunity to impact 250 kids whose parents can’t afford camp.” Fontana believes elementary students must learn about philanthropy by doing it: “I envision taking kids from my immediate community into Title I schools so they can collaboratively create with LEGO bricks during the school year.” Kids from all communities can learn that charitable giving includes more than monetary donations. It is building relationships, giving time, sharing knowledge and developing gratitude.
Fontana aims for a model like TOMS shoes—a portion of business profits going directly to the nonprofit. For example, portions of LEGO purchases at Bricks 4 Kidz fund free afterschool Bricks 4 Kidz classes at Title I schools. “I’m intent on providing our programming to kids who otherwise don’t have access,” he says. Fontana believes all kids need opportunities to create things from scratch—sans step-by-step instructions and screentime. Fontana asked one underprivileged child where he wanted to go to college; “Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” the boy replied. The altruistic entrepreneur believes too many children around the bay don’t have access to valuable educational opportunities, which include informative conversations about things like college and STEM careers.
LEGO bricks’ nostalgia factor facilitates connections between caretakers and children. With a strong marketing skill set, Fontana is confident he will garner the support requisite for growing Kids Love Bricks: “I’m not looking to take over the world, but I want to provide Tampa Bay’s children in need access to LEGO birthday parties, enrichment classes and camps.” Donations generated through social media campaigns, alongside grant dollars, will also buttress growth.
Brick by brick, we can all contribute to ensuring Tampa Bay area kids have abundant occasions for learning with LEGO.

it by far is within only a couple of hundred yards from the coast in a very small area—typically in the northeast quadrant of that storm.
Myth: Flooding can only occur if you live along the coast.
DP: That's absolutely not true. Storm surge and flooding are two very different things. When we talk about flooding with hurricanes, we talk about inland freshwater floods. And that's rainfall.
Think about it this way: When a storm is coming towards us and it's pushing all this water into our area from the Gulf, when we get all this rain, that rain has to drain somewhere through the rivers, through the creeks, into the Bay, into the Gulf. And that's how the water recedes. But when the water is being pushed in as the storm approaches, there's no place for that water to go because it's being pushed literally back inland. So, all that rainfall has no place to go and will lead to a lot of inland flooding. Almost all of that is just freshwater rainwater flooding.
Storm surge flooding is more devastating to areas along the immediate coastline because not only do you have the rise of water, but you also have the waves on top of that rise of water so you can get a 10-to-12-foot storm surge and then throw in another 20 to 25 feet of waves on top of that rising water as it comes in. That's where you get a lot of structural damage.
Myth: If you live outside the cone, you’re safe from damaging effects.
DP: Here’s something that most people don't know. The cone has nothing to do with the forecast track of that storm. The cone is nothing more than a statistical presentation of what storms with that track have done that far out over the last 30 years. The cone takes wherever that track is at the center point, and then takes out statistically 75 miles in either direction from the last 24 hours. Well, the center line is really the only thing that's coming from the Hurricane Center. The cone isn't really an accurate representation of that storm. It's just an accurate representation of what storms have done at a certain period on a similar track. Whatever the margin of error is over the last 30 years, that is what the cone is.
Myth: You don’t need to evacuate unless you know for certain where the storm will make landfall.
DP: We’ve seen it all happen repeatedly where we're in a cone and the storm misses us or it turns. Unfortunately, there's a sense of apathy that comes along with it. I’ve noticed with a big storm, people have a tendency to take it more seriously. They will be far more likely to evacuate earlier. Then, if it's maybe a cat 1 or a cat 2 and they're like, ‘Well, you know what? That's not horrible. I can ride it out. I can go without power for a day or two.’
Truth Behind Common Hurricane Misconceptions
by Brie GoreckiIs wind more dangerous than water? Will Tampa always dodge big storms? Will taping your windows prevent them from breaking? Hurricane season is here, and while it’s important to know the facts and be prepared, it’s also easy to become misinformed.
We spoke to ABC Action News Chief Meteorologist Denis Phillips about some of the most common hurricane myths. He gave us his take on why they’re not true, what you should really know about hurricanes, and how to be prepared.
Myth: Wind is the most dangerous part of the hurricane.
DP: That's false. The most damaging and the most impactful part of the storm would be storm surge. If you live inland, out of the flood zone, then wind is going to be the biggest issue for you. But if you live along the coast, water is the biggest issue. We’ve seen the horror stories of storm surge. Typically, storm surge is in a small area, and usually, the worst of
And if it’s a 1 or 2, you're right, you can. The problem is, what if that 1 or 2 gets stronger and before landfall, becomes a 4? And honestly, that's the worst-case scenario for us folks in Florida. At some point, we're going to have a storm because the water is so warm and the warmer the water, the more likely it is for rapid intensification. So, people are going to go to bed and it's a 1 and they're like, ‘Well, we're going to be OK.’ And they wake up and it's a 4. And at that point, it's too late to go anywhere because the traffic's too bad or they can't get out or whatever the case may be. They're going to ride it out. I just think it's up to people's own personal plan of attack and what they're going to do and how they're going to handle it.
Myth: Tampa always dodges the storms, so we’ll be OK again this year.
DP: Knock on wood, it is absolutely fair to say Tampa is not in a hurricane prone area for major hurricanes. You can't argue with the fact that it's been 103 years since we have seen a major hurricane. That’s not luck and that's probably not the Indian burial ground either. I think most people blow it off because that center of the line goes directly into Tampa, and I think we all know storms coming in from the West side have a tendency to curve at the very end.
At the end of the day, a cat 1 or tropical storm passes within 50 miles of the bay area every four years—that’s the statistic. So, we often see storms passing to our west at a 1 or lower and usually they're going to the Panhandle. There's a reason for that because hurricanes travel towards the poles; they're designed to do that. So, a storm coming in from the South is going to go far. More likely it's going to go into the Panhandle than it is in our area.
The only thing that's going to kick a storm into our area coming in from the South is a cold front or a trough of low pressure. How many cold fronts and troughs with low pressure do we get in July and August and early September? Not too many. So, these storms that form in the Caribbean, and there'll probably be quite a few this year with the La Nina, they're going to come in from the south and they're going to want to go north. And if they do, they're going to go to the Panhandle or they're going to go to Louisiana.
Now, I think we all know at some point we are going to get a major hurricane. We are. I mean, there is no way around it. It's going to happen. Whether it happens sooner or later, who knows.
Myth: Tropical storms won’t be destructive and don’t need as much storm prep as a hurricane.
DP: The water is higher than it was 30 years ago, and our water rise is more pronounced. So, areas that typically would not flood in the past in a tropical storm are now flooding. There's also been some bad luck that some of these storms have hit at king tides when the tide has been super high for the month anyway. You have a king tide every year or every month. It's just the highest tide of the month, and it's predictable. It's been one of those things that we've had a couple of storms at king tide, which has made it worse. But on the other side of the coin, we are seeing water rise and the more water rising we see, the more likely it is that areas that never used to flood in tropical storms will flood now.
Myth: Taping your windows will protect them and you should also crack them to stabilize the pressure.
DP: Taping the windows has absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with protecting your home, and neither does opening a window. Typically, that was something people used to do for tornadoes, thinking that that would equalize the pressure. And it has absolutely no impact. But people still do it. Neither will be opening up your windows. It'll just get everything inside wet even if the storm doesn't really hit that hard.
Myth: Hurricanes can only occur between June 1 and Nov. 30.
DP: Nope. As a matter of fact, five of the last six years, we've had a named storm in May. Now, there's some people out there trying to expand the hurricane season to May. Along the Pacific Ocean, their hurricane season does start in May. Our starts June 1. In my mind, does it really matter if something's technically hurricane season or not? If there's a storm out there, we're going to track it. I don't care if it's in the season or not. I don't really think it matters. But, early season storms, ones in May and June, typically aren't really big wind makers. They're usually more rain makers. And quite often, an early season tropical storm has been a blessing for parts of our area. Typically in March, April, and May, we're so dry that when you get a tropical storm come in in June and give us 10-15 inches of rain, it pretty much busts the drought.
Myth: If we have more named storms, that indicates that there's going to be a more dangerous season.
DP: Statistically speaking, it's just not the case for all our area. If you go back and look at history, a very active year or a very inactive year does not change the risk of us being hit directly by a hurricane. The numbers just don't show that. Now the East Coast, the Outer Banks of the Carolinas, the Panhandle and the northern Gulf Coast—those areas do have a higher likelihood of landfall if it's a more active season. People will say, ‘Well, that's common sense. If there's more storms, there's going to be a higher risk of us getting hit.’ I get the logic, but the numbers don't pan out.
What can we expect this hurricane season?
The predictions for this year are some of the highest they've ever been in history. And pretty much all the predictions are because the ocean is super warm in the Atlantic and we have a La Nina coming. But just because we have those two things doesn't mean that there aren't other factors that go in the other direction, one of which is Saharan dust from Africa.
Typically, when you have a lot of Saharan dust coming off the coast of Africa, which we do regularly in June and July, that kind of squashes the development of the season. I do think it's fair to say that there's going to be a pretty high number of named storms. However, that does not necessarily mean that they're going to be making landfall at certain places. And they can all be out in the middle of the ocean.
Ones coming from the south are always our biggest concerns. And last year, we didn't have any of those because we had an El Nino. But this year we have a La Nina and it's far more likely for these storms to develop. Because of that, I do think we're going to have a lot of stuff coming in from the south now, which means we're probably going to have a lot of near misses or storms that come pretty close to us. It's just a question of whether they continue to go north in the Panhandle or northern Gulf Coast or move our way.

Meditation is for children, too
Local mom expands podcast network to include meditations just for kids
by Maggie Rodriguez, co-host of Daytime on WFLA News Channel 8When her oldest daughter was 3, Katie Krimitsos began playing meditations for the active toddler. “She jumped up and down on the bed most of the time it played. But I just lay down and let the meditation play as she did. Pretty soon, she became accustomed to the routine, and as she got older, she began to lie down with me and get into it.” Meditation is now a regular part of family life. The nightly routine with her young girls (now ages 5 and 8) inspired Krimitsos to expand her Women’s Meditation Network to include five meditation podcasts specifically for children, each one filled with empowering messages and relaxing visualizations for children of all ages.
TBPM: Your guided meditation podcasts for women are hugely popular (140 million lifetime downloads). How do you go about creating new meditations just for kids?
K.K: I simply create loving words and poetry that are affirming and calming, ultimately creating an experience that kids find soothing. Sometimes that's around a subject like confidence (like in the meditation called “You Be You”) or meditations that can deliver a beautiful visualization that can help them relax deeply (like in the meditation called “The Gentle Raindrops”).
TBPM: Why is meditation a good fit for kids? Are they even capable of meditating given how hard it can be for a kid to sit still?
K.K: Meditation is such a powerful tool to teach our kids mindfulness and self-awareness. It can help them manage their emotions and get to know themselves. But it's okay if your kids don't sit still very easily! Nighttime is a great way to easily introduce meditation to them. It'll help them calm down and fall asleep. Then, as they begin to know what a meditation is, you can help them practice meditating in different ways. Meditation is a practice...for kids and adults.
TBPM: When is a good time to fit meditation into a kid’s schedule?
K.K: Bedtime is a great way to start because it can easily fit into a bedtime routine. Most of our sleep meditations are around 20 minutes long, which seems to be an ideal time to give kids the chance to "get the wiggles out," calm down and fall asleep.
Morning time is another great time to fit it in. Perhaps starting on the weekends when mornings might be a little more relaxed. Five to 10 minutes is all you need, and you can establish whatever norm feels good for you and your family. It's also worth noting that meditation can be something as simple as guiding your kids through a few deep, conscious breaths. This is a great strategy to incorporate it into your lives at any time.
TBPM: In your research and experience, what are the benefits of meditation?
K.K: For kids and adults, the benefits are incredible. Meditation lowers blood pressure, regulates your nervous system, gives us a tool to use when our "volcano is about to erupt," (as I tell my daughters), helps our bodies relax so we can fall asleep, helps us deal with stresses, helps us get to know ourselves and listen to our intuition. The benefits are endless.
Excerpt from ‘Sleep Meditation for Kids:”
“She Was Herself”
She was herself…
And that’s what made her beautiful.
She was herself…
And that’s what made her shine.
She was herself…
And danced and played with the Universe.
She was herself…
She understood her design.
She shook the Earth like thunder, When her soul needed to roar,
The wind guided her wings,
When she knew it was time to soar.
Moms to Know
Jessica Payne
@jesssouthern, Sweatology Studio, Undressed Tans
by Julie Tingley, founder of @weemacreeEvery child is truly a treasure, and for most, pregnancy is a gift. However, after navigating a journey through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy to welcome her two children, Lenny (6) and Bowie (3), Jessica Payne could have never predicted the miracle waiting to unfold years later. As this local mom announces the arrival of her third child and second daughter, we are invited to witness the inexplicable, and a testament to the enduring power of faith and the triumph of the human spirit.
TBPM: Tell us a little bit about the road that eventually led you to Tampa.
JP: I was doing makeup for a show on CMT with my friend Jessie Decker, and she randomly was going through her phone to find me a guy—as girls do—and she said, “This is it. He is so funny; you have to meet him.” He was her husband’s friend from college; they played football together and have stayed in touch since. She was like, “Trust me, he is perfect for you and can’t believe I didn’t think of him sooner.” Fast forward to after almost two years of long distance dating (as I was in Los Angeles), he asked me to move to Tampa. I thought why not, as I was ready for the next chapter and could travel for work.
TBPM: As someone who has built a very authentic online platform showcasing your creative talents, you’ve also been completely open about the birth stories of your daughter and son. What were those journeys like?
JP: Probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’ve been through abusive relationships, and someone asked me once, “How is IVF harder than abuse?” And while everyone has different feelings, this was harder for me because it was my future. It was the one thing my husband and I wanted more than anything. Thinking I couldn’t give my husband a family broke my heart. So I put a lot of pressure on myself as I have always wanted to be a mom.
With Lenny I got very sick—preeclampsia with liver and kidney failure— after we did IVF. It was hard and I blamed myself and my body for not giving her what she needed, which was to stay in me. I had her at 27 weeks and three days, and there is nothing harder than hearing the words, “We are going to do the best we can, but we won’t know for 24 hours, and you won’t hear a cry because she is too little.” We went back to the operating room as both mine and her body were failing going into the emergency C-section. I’ve never been more scared, but then I did hear a squeak! It was the tiniest noise that the doctors said I wouldn’t hear! It was then that I knew she was a fighter, and she gave me hope to fight too. One hundred days later, we left the hospital with a healthy baby. She is now such a strong and the most kind-hearted 6-year-old girl, and I am so proud of her.
With my son, we had two frozen embryos, and he was second strongest grade 5 BA right under Lenny. The doctors in Nashville and Tampa
refused to place him through IVF with me. We saw around seven different physicians, but based on my history, they did not see the possibility of me and a baby both leaving the hospital together. We cried and mourned our embryos, but my husband never lost faith. His childhood best friend and his wife, Grace, have four beautiful kids, and they told us they would carry our son for us. Grace gave us the most selfless gift you can ever imaginethe chance for me to be a mom again. Surrogacy is hard. I felt guilty I couldn’t carry him, hated I couldn’t feel him, but thankful that Grace would keep him safe.
When Bowie was born, I was so worried about us bonding, but I was wrong. The second I held him, we instantly bonded. That was my special boy. He just turned 3, and he is the most loving boy.
TBPM: What is one of your favorite memories/ moments from this pregnancy?
JP: Lenny feeling the baby kick for the first, and Bowie kissing my belly. I never thought I would experience those things.
TBPM: Knowing that the odds of conceiving and carrying another baby were not in your favor, what does this experience mean to you? As a believer, how does it make you feel?
JP: We had given up on extending our family. We were content and grateful with our two miracles. We were obviously not trying at the time, but I felt I should take a pregnancy test after some spotting. Never did I think it would be positive. When I saw the positive result, I instantly cried for so many reasons. I was scared of what doctors told me about a baby never surviving, so it was like a “positive” with a loss within the same minutes.
Logan and I went to the doctor the next day because I’m so high risk, and I remember him telling me, “Babe, this is God. He wouldn’t do this just to take the baby away from us. This is our final miracle.” At that moment I just started thinking that God had always had plans for us to have three children, and His plans are much stronger than ours. He gave us what we were meant to have.

Stopping the Summer Slide
by Laura CrossWhat do you think of when you hear “summer slide”?
Is it a super cool water slide at Adventure Island? Or how about sliding into home plate during a summer Rays game?
Actually, the summer slide has to deal with learning loss over the summer. Research suggests students learn about a month’s worth of learning, on average, over the summer.
It makes sense. They go from having school five days a week, to twoand-a-half months of nearly nothing.
MyON is a personalized digital library that gives students access to more than 7,000 digital books. Its stats show that in 2023, kids in Hillsborough County read nearly 600,000 books in May. In June of 2023, that number dropped to approximately 117,000 books.
Ask any teacher, especially an elementary school teacher, and they’ll tell you the first month of a new school year is often spent “reteaching” skills from the previous year.
That’s because of the summer slide.
However, all is not lost! There is a way to prevent the summer slide. Children must read over the summer. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but they must read.
Hillsborough County Public Schools has teamed up with MyON to encourage children to keep reading over the summer.
It only takes two books to stop the summer slide.
That’s right! By reading just two books over the entire summer, you can stop the summer slide.
Just two (on level) books are enough to keep those skills sharp enough to not lose any reading learning loss over the summer.
MyOn.com is a wonderful source to find books as well as activities you can do with your children to encourage them to read. Our local libraries are another amazing resource. Many public libraries have events and classes which are a great way to beat the heat over the summer.
Beating the heat and beating the summer slide: Sounds like a plan!

Meet Dr. Decker: Father of 5 and Cardiologist
by Ashley MarshallJamie Decker, M.D., is a dedicated father of five who juggles the demands of his medical career with the joys of fatherhood. Decker is passionate about both of the hats that he wears as a dad and a cardiologist in the Heart Institute at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, where he specializes in electrophysiology.
“It’s super rewarding. I love being a dad and I was always drawn to medicine,” says Decker.
Decker has worked at John Hopkins All Children’s since 2011. His days are focused on bringing expertise in treating patients with rhythm abnormalities. From performing ablations to managing post-op patients with rhythm problems, his work is both challenging and fulfilling.
"Essentially, once we perform an ablation procedure, they're cured," says Decker. “That’s an incredible feeling.”
He enjoys seeing patients in the hospital and being part of their follow-up care, which allows him to establish a genuine relationship with families. Being a dad also helps him to connect with his families on a very human level.
“It’s easy to step into their shoes,” says Decker. “I treat each patient as if they were my own.”
Decker is a dad to three older children, aged 17, 14 and 12, and two young ones, aged 3 and 1. He embraces the challenges and excitement of parenting across a wide age range. His youngest is learning to walk, while his oldest is learning to drive.
"It's definitely crazy busy all the time," says Decker with a laugh.
He also recently coached his daughter's soccer team, which was a great bonding experience.
“Being able to share that with her was great and it was a lot of fun,” says Decker. “It was nice just getting out there and exercising.”
But despite the craziness, Decker always make sure the family comes together. An important family tradition is bringing the whole crew together each night for family dinners.
"Everybody eats dinner together and we discuss our days," he shares, emphasizing the importance of staying connected despite busy schedules.
For Father's Day this June, Decker looks forward to spending quality time with his family, possibly with a relaxing day by the pool. While balancing the demands of his career and parenthood is no easy feat, Decker approaches both roles with dedication and love, striving to create meaningful connections with his children while making a positive impact in his patients' lives.

St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital proves its commitment to top-notch care for mothers-to-be
For the expert doctors, nurses, technicians and all the other unsung heroes who deliver babies at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, this news did not come as a surprise: The facility just attained the highest level of certification in Maternal Care by The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest heath care accrediting organization.
And Dr. Megan Tirone, chief medical officer of St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, couldn’t be prouder. “This just verified the quality care that we were already providing,” Dr. Tirone says. “We were already doing it, and doing it well.”
As a Level IV maternal care verified facility, St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital is recognized for its commitment to providing exceptional maternal healthcare services. It is the sixth facility in Florida to earn the certification as part of The Joint Commission’s Maternal Levels of Care (MLC) Verification program, offered in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
The MLC Verification program verifies that a hospital has the expertise, equipment and resources in place for a patient’s specific needs and risk level. Obtaining this certification was a deeply involved process. The certification team delved into charts, interviewed nurses, spoke to patients and examined everything the facility does with a fine-tooth comb. The staff had to demonstrate that not only do they run a top-notch operation, but also that the policies and procedures are in place to keep it running that way—policies that each member of the staff proved that they know inside out.
St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital demonstrated its capability to provide onsite medical and surgical care of the most complex maternal conditions and critically ill pregnant women and fetuses throughout antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care. The hospital also displayed its comprehensive approach to maternal care, which encompasses multidisciplinary teamwork involving obstetricians, perinatologists, emergency department personnel, intensive care unit staff, nursing teams and anesthesiologists. This collaborative effort ensures that even the most complicated cases receive specialized attention and optimal treatment.
Dr. Tirone says the program addresses not only physical health, but also mental well-being. “It’s a commitment to the entire patient, including mental health,” Dr. Tirone says. “We offer mental health services and support to mom. We recognize the importance of addressing maternal mental health as an integral part of her overall wellness.”
Care flows beyond the hospital walls also. The hospital recently launched a grant-funded High-Risk Obstetrics Clinic, which plays a crucial role in providing maternal fetal medicine consultation and evaluation for high-risk patients who may otherwise have limited access to care. In partnership with Tampa Family Health Centers, the clinic offers obstetric care alongside essential wrap-around services such as navigation assistance, education and social services.
St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital joins AdventHealth Orlando, South Miami Hospital, University of Florida Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, and Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies in Orlando as the sixth Level IV maternity hospital in Florida.
Dr. Tirone is especially proud of the culture of care that is evident in every aspect of the hospital and in the way each staff member goes about doing their job every day. “Everybody enjoys being here, and everybody is proud to be here,” she says.
Sarah Naumowich, president of St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, describes the certification as a testament to the hospital’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of mothers and their babies. “Our team prioritizes a culture of compassion, collaboration and excellence in every aspect of patient care," she says.
For prospective area patients, the certification serves as reassurance that if they have a high-risk obstetric emergency situation, they have excellent options. Says Dr. Tirone: “It’s a way to know that this is a safe place, and you are in safe hands.”
Growing Sweet Potatoes in Florida: A Summer Delight for Families
by Ginain Grayes, Cook The Garden PodcastFlorida's warm, sunny climate offers the perfect conditions for growing sweet potatoes, a versatile and nutritious vegetable that thrives during the summer months. Gardening can be a wonderful family activity, and cultivating sweet potatoes is a simple and rewarding project that even young children can participate in. I’m so excited to share a delicious recipe for a one-pan kale and sweet potato hash that's perfect for your next harvest!
WHY GROW SWEET POTATOES?
Sweet potatoes are not only delicious but also packed with vitamins A and C, making them a healthy addition to any meal. They are relatively low-maintenance, require minimal space, and can be grown in the ground or in large containers, making them ideal for any size garden.

1 tbsp olive oil

3. Add red bell pepper, broccolini and mushrooms to the skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes until vegetables are tender.
4. Stir in garlic and chickpeas, cooking until garlic is fragrant.
