Letter from the Editor Believe it or not summer is right around the corner. And after the winter we’ve had, some warmer weather will be welcome. Come July, I may change my mind, but for now I’m ready to thaw out. As we look forward to summer, it’s also time for moms and dads to start thinking about how they’re going to keep the kids active and entertained this summer. Our camp guide is a complete resource for preschoolers, tweens, teens and everything in between.

Get ready preschoolers. Elmo, Big Bird and all their friends are coming to Sesame Street Safari of Fun at Busch Gardens. The signature attraction opens March 27 and will be filled with rides, cool water fun, shows and memorable adventures that celebrate the spirit of Africa. Only Busch Gardens gives you the opportunity to encounter unique African-themed versions of the characters and go on safari with the beloved friends. entertaining,” Mills said. “From having the perfect kid-sized attraction to making parking easier for moms with strollers, we’re really embracing Sesame Street and a kidfriendly attitude throughout our operation.” Forty-four spots in the preferred parking area will be available for guests with strollers, so they can bypass the tram. No additional fee is required. Spaces are available on a limited basis. Guests can request the spots at the parking tollbooths. Kids can pick up a version of the park map made especially for them, highlighting ageappropriate attractions such as Jambo Junction, where guests can have up-close interactions with animals such as flamingos, lemurs and sloths; Timbuktu, where pint-sized rides such as a carousel and small planes will delight those not ready for the major coasters; or Jungala, where families can connect with the jungle through a three-story play land, soar above the treetops on a zip line adventure and come face to face with exotic and endangered animals. In addition to the rides and play areas at Busch Gardens’ Sesame Street Safari of Fun, families can share breakfast or lunch with Elmo and friends in a brand-new dining facility adjacent to the Sesame Street Safari of Fun area and view “Sesame Street Presents: Lights, Camera, Imagination!” in the park’s 4-D theater, located in Timbuktu. Business and community leaders will have an opportunity to be a part of downtown’s resurgence – and make a lasting impact on children -- at the Glazer Children’s Museum-hosted fundraiser on May 22. The “Imagination Gala” will be the first public event held inside the new 53,000-square-foot museum, which is slated to open in the Fall. Co-chairing the Dr. Seuss-themed event are Angela Ardolino and Kelly Feldman. Honorary Chairs for the evening are Mike and Nicole Alstott. “The gala and auction will be a major fundraising push for the children’s museum,” Ardolino said. “We expect to see many of our longtime friends, as well as share our exciting plans with new community partners before the grand opening.” Individual gala tickets are $175, and there are VIP sponsorship packages available. Walk MS with the Martinez Soliders

When Paul Martinez was 17, he was diagnosed with MS and decided to join the battle against MS. He formed The Martinez Soldiers and participated in his first Walk MS Event in Tampa. The Martinez Soldiers had 108 members and raised more than $4,000 with the help of Alonso High School and Tampa General Hospital. This money helps fund MS research and ensures that those who have MS can get the help they need. The Martinez Soldiers are at it again this year. Paul and his team are participating in the Walk MS at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo on March 27 and are looking to surpass last year’s amount. With his attitude, it seems like an easy goal. To join the battle against MS with Martinez Soldiers, register at www.natinalmssociety.org/flc or call 1-800-344-4867. Walk MS: Tampa 2010 on March 27 will start at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, 1001 W. Sligh Ave., in Tampa. Check-in is at 5:30 p.m. with the walk kicking off at 6:30 p.m. All participants must checkin and turn in their waiver/pledge envelopes the morning of the walk. For more information, call Olivia Moriarty at 1-888-950-9080 or visit www.midfloridamswalks.org.

Local Builder joins ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Hyde Park Builders, an independent, authorized builder for Nationwide Homes, recently joined ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition for a build in February. This will be the first time the popular television program has featured a home built with modular construction during its intense one-week build time. As longtime national builders of systems-built homes, Nationwide Homes and Hyde Park Builders are ready to assist Extreme Makeover: Home Edition with this task. Building and delivering a high quality home with extreme customization in one week is a routine part of the job for this homebuilder. Scott Shimberg, President of Hyde Park Builders, says: “Because these homes are built in environmentally-protected building centers with constant quality checks and then transported to the final home site, rain and other weather delays do not impact the build schedule. This inherently green construction method and the other green features built into the home are expected to give the home both Energy-Star & NAHB Green Certification. This means that this home will need to use fewer utilities required to heat, cool and operate a typical home built to accepted state and local building standards.” PICTURED: SCOTT SHIMBERG OF HYDE PARK BUILDERS

education guide In schools across the nation, curriculum and delivery of curriculum are undergoing a quiet revolution. The enormous changes in information technology and the speed at which communication easily takes have caused the U.S. Army War College to coin an acronym for our times. The world of the 21st century, they say, is VUCA, meaning that it is filled with volatility, uncertainty, challenge and ambiguity. How should today’s schools help our children prepare for the VUCA world they will enter? Daniel Pink looks to answer this in his book, A Whole New Mind. In Pink’s view, the new landscape primarily has been shaped by three factors: abundance, asia and automation.

Teaching in the Information Age BY MARK HELLER

“If you are not a school of the future, you risk being a school without a future. . .” Patrick F. Bassett, President, National Association of Independent Schools

Abundance From sophisticated material goods to the innumerable options we enjoy regarding where to live, what to buy and even what to eat, Americans have unbelievable freedom to choose. Periodically, events like those in Haiti wake us out of our preoccupation with our choices to tell us that others may not be so fortunate, but most of the time, we hone our competitive market-oriented skills toward the end of maximizing our purchasing power. This comes from abundance, and gives rise to the essential question: Will what I am able to offer be in demand in an age of abundance? Asia Fact. China has 1.3 billion people. India has about a billion. The U.S. just hit 300 million. Put another way, there are over 3 people in India for every one in the U.S., and there are over 4 people in China for every one in the U.S. The top quarter of students in China and the top quarter of students in India each have more than the total number of students in the U.S. and they all learn to speak English. And, depending on the business sector they are in, they will be happy with wages that are one-third to one-fifth of the price of a similarly talented U.S. worker. How will our children compete? Automation To fully understand our situation, we must have some understanding of history. Up until the 18th century, humans were

entrenched in the Agricultural Age. Following that came the Industrial Age. In both of those eras, the worker who was most in demand was one who had physical strength and personal fortitude. In contrast, by the late 20th century, the workers who controlled, marshaled and doled out information reaped the greatest rewards – the Information Age. In the Information Age, the presence of computers has changed certain kinds of routine information processing jobs. Basic accounting has been altered by programs like QuickBooks and TurboTax. Basic lawyering tasks can now be accomplished through the many computerized “do it yourself ” programs. Even doctors’ work in the process of diagnosis is based on decision-tree logic, and patients now find themselves able to access programs that allow them to answer a series of questions to arrive at a pretty strong preliminary diagnosis without a physician. Of course, we will always need doctors and lawyers and accountants, but their roles and the attributes that will bring success are changing. Even professionals will need to have a higher degree of sophistication and a different set of skills. So what do we need to do to prepare our students for the 21st century? Most of the jobs our children will do have yet to be envisioned or developed. The pace of the expansion of knowledge is so fast today that a high percentage of facts our children will learn in school and college will be out-of-date. Among that skills that likely will be necessary for students in the Information Age are: Global Awareness The world has gotten much smaller. Language proficiency, cultural sensitivity, openness to new and different ideas and perspectives and ability to adapt to change will be essential. Ability to Access and Assess Information Media literacy will be key. Once upon a time, there were editors whose gauntlet needed to be run before information was widely available. That’s no longer true, so we must help our children learn how to discriminate between bad information and good.

Ability to Collaborate, Communicate and Present According to author Malcolm Gladwell, the new model of genius is collective, not individual. In order for our children to truly exercise creativity and innovate, they must be able to do so in groups. Thus, they need relationship-building skills and the ability to function as a member of a team. Financial, Economic and Entrepreneurial Literacy To help our students gain a leg up, and in addition to the economics requirement, my school has instituted a personal finance course that is required before high school graduation. Civic Literacy and Health Literacy Building blocks for a healthy and strong nation. Innovation/Creativity These paramount characteristics are built through the next category. Critical Thinking Skills and Problem-Solving Skill Building Structures of Self-Direction, Accountability and Resilience One of the key attributes for future success is “the ability to manage one’s own work, and to drive it to a successful conclusion,” says Patrick Bassett, president of the National Association of Independent Schools. Character Integrity, compassion, honesty, essential human values that ought never be cast aside. If these things are going to be necessary, how do we re-form school to make it be a builder of these skills in our students? I believe we must create environments that build these skills through curricular approaches and courses and through extra-curricular activities. A VUCA world will require VUCA skills, the ability to apply vision, understanding, clarity and agility to the world of the future. It’s an exciting time to be part of the revolution. keys to prosperity

A

BY PETER A. GORSKI, M.D., M.P.A. sk any successful entrepreneur to list the ingredients necessary for turning a profit and you’ll likely hear:

• a clear sense of value and purpose • a passion for continuous learning, growth and development • a healthy, energetic, skilled, educated workforce, especially since today’s economy is largely information-based and buys and sells services more than products • a community rich with intellectual, social, cultural, recreational and spiritual resources — one that will attract and sustain a productive, engaged and wealthy population of consumers and employees • staying power — resilience to short-term challenges and disappointments • ability to anticipate and adapt to change • strong support from trusted backers • a good fit between the company and the marketplace • the good luck to be in the right place at the right time • the conviction that your product matters and is worth purchasing Hey, those elements for success sound real

familiar. You would hear the same guidance from parents and professional child advocates. When it comes to raising children to become caring individuals eager and able to contribute to the prosperity of their communities, the rules almost echo sound business practice. What do kids need to acquire if they are to grow and develop successfully? Compare the following list of prerequisites for healthy child development to the one above that builds a foundation for economic security and prosperity. To succeed in life, children need: • a clear faith in one’s value to family, self and others • a passion for learning • parents and teachers who cultivate their emerging values, insights and abilities • a natural and built environment that offers love, support, stimulation, challenge, play and inspiration • resilience — the strength to learn and bounce back from mistakes, challenges and disappointments • adaptability to changes in circumstances, expectations and relationships • consistent trust in and support from family and friends • a sense of comfort and belonging with their environment

• the good fortune to experience more positive support than negative stress • the belief that they do and can make a difference to someone and to the world So, it seems clear that the same qualities that promote the health, well-being and growth of children also advance the health, well-being and growth of our economy. The emotional security of children lays a base for inspiring all the forms of human energy needed to create the financial security of families, institutions and nations. Since children become the captains (and recruits) of industry and the consumer engines of the economy, their healthy development defines the potential for prosperity. Indeed, the status of children serves as the best barometer and earliest analog of the health and wealth of their communities. Human beings and human enterprise need the same fertilizers. Logically, then, we would strengthen our personal bank accounts and our local economy if, every time we face a business decision, launch a community project or cast a vote, we asked ourselves: “How will this action affect children?” When the health, well-being and development of children become our first concern, we will also insure our personal and national security. Here’s to the rich life!

Extraordinary Woman A small-town girl with big dreams – that’s how Shari Mezrah describes herself. Well, the Columbia, Mo., native and mother of two has made her dreams come true and is helping other parents dream too, literally. Any new parent knows that sleep is a precious commodity and Mezrah, a sleep schedule specialist, created BabyTIME to help moms and dads get some zzzs. Her first book, The Baby Sleeps Tonight – Your Infant Sleeps through the Night by 9 Weeks, is hitting bookstores and she’s excited to bring rest back to weary new moms.

become a published author.

Q: How did you get the idea for BabyTIME? A: I became pregnant with my son Maxwell in 1998. At the time, I had a consulting business coaching executives in public speaking. After giving birth, I started doing research and created BabyTIME. I began working as a sleep schedule specialist and developed strategies to help parents get their babies to sleep through the night.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Tampa? A: The best thing is I have really great friends. Plus, in Tampa everything is 30 minutes away or less. My office is five miles from my home and that’s very good for my car.

Q: What is the secret to your success? A: Being passionate about what I do and believing in myself are my strongest attributes. I also have a very strong work ethic.

Q: What is motherhood like for you? A: Being a mom is everything to me. I live for my family. Q: How do you balance motherhood and work? A: One day at a time. I try to maintain my cool at all times. We practice taking three deep breaths in my family before reacting, especially when we’ve had a long day and can be irritable.

Q: What are your favorite things to do with your children in the Tampa Bay area? A: We love going out to dinner with the kids and taking them to special events and concerts. Max and Sam also love going to the Florida State Fair every year and the Wagon Wheel Flea Market.

Q: What goals have you set for yourself ? A: I would like to grow my business and use my talents to contribute to the community.

Q: What are your favorite restaurants for the whole family? A: Actually, we have a top four. Pho Quyên is the best (great Vietnamese). We go to Beef O’ Brady’s with our playgroup. Bern’s Steak House is wonderful. CK’s revolving rooftop restaurant at the Tampa International Airport Marriott Hotel is such a great place to eat, watch planes and watch the sunset.

Q: What advice would you offer other women entrepreneurs? A: Believe in yourself and follow your instincts. There are lessons to be learned all the time; so give yourself permission to make mistakes. And use every day as a chance to learn something new.

Q: Who has been your biggest inspiration? A: My husband Todd is my stronghold. He has an incredible amount of inner strength and always supports me. His commitment to his work is so admirable and he still makes time to play with his kids and wife. He has a deep appreciation for life.

Q: What is your proudest moment? A: There are two moments for me -- bringing my children, Maxwell and Samantha, into the world.

Q: What makes you happy? A: When I help people it gives me a sense of inner peace. Making others happy makes me happy.

Q: What is your biggest achievement? A: My book. I feel extremely fortunate to

Q: How do you relax and rejuvenate yourself ? A: I love to make plans -- taking road trips and

Q: What is your biggest fear? A: I strive not to be afraid of anything. I try to turn fear into opportunity and focus on the things I can control.

going camping with my family. I enjoy going to the movies. Retail therapy is really beneficial, too, and I love to find that great bargain. Q: What is something people don’t know about you? A: I have a snack every night before I go to sleep. I also keep a pad of paper and pen next to my bed to write down notes or reminders. I have been doing this since I was 12 years old. Q: What message would you like to give to women? A: Get involved. You can make a difference. Find that special passion or charity that fulfills you and get going. Q: What would you like to see in Tampa’s future? A: I would love to see downtown alive at night and on weekends. We are getting there with the openings of the Tampa Museum of Art and the Glazer Children’s Museum. The park is fabulous. My kids love it. But we need more businesses and restaurants and more festivals and street fairs. We have an awesome downtown. Q: What final thoughts would you like to leave parents with? A: Everything in life is manageable. It’s how you choose to react that will set the pace.

Carrollwood Day School Welcomes Teachers from Korea Earlier this year, the English Language Institute at the University of South Florida launched a special, Teaching English as a Foreign Language program for a group of 31 elementary English teachers from Korea. Carrollwood Day School, one of two local schools partnering with ELI, hosted a site visit for the program participants in February in coordination with the micro-teaching project. Sabrina McCartney, Primary Years Programme Coordinator for Carrollwood Day School, worked closely with Michelle Bell, Academic Programs Director at USF’s ELI to coordinate the partnership and visit to the school at 1515 W. Bearss Ave. in North Tampa. The visiting teachers from Korea toured the school and observed various classes on Feb. 1, then returned Feb. 5 to teach a lesson in the same class they had visited earlier. The teachers led a short lesson on Korean culture and language with the class they had observed. The program was designed to provide an opportunity for the visiting teachers to talk with a similar grade level teacher, observe their class and both prepare and deliver that lesson in English. In addition to providing an invaluable experience for the teachers, the lessons about Korea provided a unique learning opportunity for the Carrollwood students, as well. For information about Carrollwood Day School and its partnership with the English Language Institute, call (813) 920-2288 or visit the school’s Web site at www.carrollwooddayschool.org.

Goddard Schools Stepping Up for the Environment On March 22, Goddard Schools will launch a week of activities and lesson plans about sustainability and making a positive impact on the environment on a daily basis. Across the country, 40,000 children attending the 350 Goddard schools in the U.S., including its two Tampa locations at 13401 Tampa Oaks Blvd. and 14607 Brick Place, will take part in the weeklong Stepping Up for the Environment celebration which launches March 22 and culminates at 10 a.m. March 26 when all schools will turn off any nonessential lighting for one hour. “We want children to think about how we all impact the environment in our daily lives and how each one of us can make a difference. Earth Hour provides a great opportunity to accomplish that,” said Joseph Schumacher, CEO of Goddard Systems Inc. “As educators and parents, we want to help children understand that how they care for and protect the earth will affect future generations.” Throughout the week, students will participate in a variety of learning activities, including art projects and science lessons, the construction of musical instruments from recycled materials and fashion shows using costumes that students create from old newspapers, magazines and paper bags. Classes also will team up with preschools in sister cities across the globe and exchange drawings and ideas for helping the environment. Participation in Earth Hour supports Goddard Systems Inc.’s ongoing efforts and commitment to the environment. Recently, Goddard has become involved with Renewable Energy Credits which give schools the option of purchasing wind energy credits, offsetting 100 percent of a schools electricity usage with clean, renewable wind power.

Infinity Learning Station offers a safe, fun summer program Opening April 19, the tutoring center aims to give children the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and in life. But don’t worry, kids, owner and creator Brenda Kingery promises you’ll have plenty of fun, too. “Our program really focuses on children ages 10-14,” Kingery says. “They often feel too old for a daycare environment, but they’re not really old enough to be left home alone for the summer.” Infinity Learning Station utilizes age-appropriate activities and lessons to make campers feel comfortable and respected. “It’s not a classroom,” Kingery stresses. “It’s a place to come and enjoy learning and have fun.” Infinity Learning Station’s life skills program also sets it apart. While campers will enjoy arts and crafts, geography, history and music, Kingery also realizes that children need other skills. “We’ll teach them about cell phone etiquette, Internet safety, car maintenance, finances and more.” Plus, parents can feel confident knowing that Kingery has been an educator for more than 30 years and is certified with the state to teach Spanish. Infinity Learning Station “will be a home away from home, where children will do fun things, learn at their own pace and be respected,” she says. Infinity offers tutoring services from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for people of all ages. Summer camp hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call Kingery at (813) 390-4746.

Our goal is to provide a recreational outlet and give residents and visitors the opportunity to be part of this extremely important and exciting adventure,” said Kurt Zuelsdorf, a 20-year resident of Gulfport and owner and operator of Kayak Nature Adventures, LLC. Zuelsdorf has been nationally recognized for his environmental efforts in and around Pinellas County. He created the Habitat Florida Manatee Program about a year ago following the success of a previous cleanup campaign, Bring Back the Bayou which Zuelsdorf says led to the return of many varieties of birds since its rollout.
