FROM THe eDITOR

i can’t believe that we’re already in March. January and February flew by and with everything going on this month, it’s sure to zoom by as well. Each year, this issue kicks off our annual Summer Camp Guide to help you prepare for the summer break. Starting on page 10, you can check out some of the best summer programs and camps available in the bay area. Me with Bryan Fen kart, star of Memphis, Editor at Large David Estevez and Laurie Winkles at Rut h Eckerd Hall.

Speaking of summer camp, mark your calendar for our fifth annual Summer Splash Summer Camp Fair on March 24. As in years past, this free event at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts will offer families information on local and national summer camps and resources to help you make the right choice for your family. Summer Splash is a family-friendly event with live entertainment, games, giveaways and more! Visit www.SummerSplashTampaBay.com to learn more or to sign up your summer camp for participation. With so much going on, you’ve surely come to depend on your smartphone. Whether you have an iPhone, Android or other device keeping you organized, apps have probably made their way onto those devices. With more than a half million apps available, we’ve narrowed down the choices for busy moms and families on page 34. We’ve had a wonderful response to our new Extraordinary Girl column. This month, we are featuring Maggie Westlake from Thonotosassa on page 40. Keep tuning in to ABC Action news at noon on Thursdays. We’ve only scratched the surface of parenting topics. Share your thoughts with me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TampaBayParentingMagazine and follow me on Twitter @angelaardolino. Have a wonderful March and see you at Summer Splash!

We love to hear from you. Don’t forget to become a fan on Facebook and get daily updates, enter contests, share pictures and chat with other families. You can check us out at TBParenting.com, too, or follow us on Twitter @tbparenting.

“Our goal at Kumon is to help all children cultivate a high level of reading ability, regardless of age or school grade.” - Dr. Mary Mokris, vice president of materials & instruction at Kumon North America.

of the characters. For example, wear a Dr. Seuss hat while reading any one of his classic books. Also, read in a voice you imagine the character to have. The more animated you are, the better!

Help Your Child Develop a Love of Reading Kumon Encourages Strong Reading Skills for Success in School and Beyond Establishing strong literacy skills early in children’s lives can significantly impact their future. From academic success to the development of imagination and creativity, exposure to literature is essential to children’s growth. “When it comes to making reading a part of your child’s everyday life, one of the most important things to remember is to keep it fun,” says Dr. Mary Mokris, vice president of materials & instruction at Kumon, a global math and reading program for kids. Dr. Mokris suggests several ways to make reading a part of your child’s life: Movie Time Some of your child’s favorite animated movies began as books. Read stories like Where the Wild Things Are, Hugo, and The Adventures of Tin Tin with your child and then watch the movie together. Bring Stories to Life Read stories aloud while dressed as one

Make a Connection Connect the character’s experience to something your child can relate to, like overcoming a challenge, gaining courage or even making a new friend. Bringing Books to Children in Need Kumon, the world’s largest afterschool program, is partnering this month with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s largest children’s literacy organization dedicated to providing books and literacy resources to underserved children across the country. For every student that enrolls this month, participating Kumon Centers nationwide will donate $10, equivalent to four new books, to RIF. Together, they share the vision of all children developing a love for reading that continues into adulthood. Having access to books at school and at home is vital. “Children with access to books within the home have a much more positive attitude towards reading and learning overall,” says Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. In middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to one, while in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. The Kumon Reading Program “Our goal at Kumon is to help all children cultivate a high level of reading ability, regardless of age or school grade,” says Dr. Mokris. Kumon’s reading comprehension program strives to enhance the reading ability

of children and create lifelong readers. With learning centers in 47 countries and regions, Kumon Instructors around the world create personalized lesson plans for each student. The curriculum is designed to foster independent learning skills that allow students to progress through the work, eventually studying above their grade level. “We often see students with advanced reading skills gain confidence and excel in other subjects in school,” says Dr. Mokris. In addition to academics, Kumon believes reading builds character in children and helps develop well-rounded personalities. Students are encouraged to excel and complete the entire reading program. Excerpts from books on Kumon’s Recommended Reading List can be found throughout the curriculum, exposing students to a variety of genres, writing styles, cultures and history. The list contains 520 books designed to help parents select material that enhances their child’s appreciation and understanding of the English language. Its titles range from classic read-aloud books like The Cat in the Hat to works of Shakespeare and T.S. Eliot. Kumon has served 16 million children worldwide since it was founded in Japan, dedicating more than 50 years to helping students in preschool to high school develop a love of learning. To find a Kumon Center near you visit www.kumon.com or call 1-877-5866673. For additional literacy resources and games, visit www.rif.org.

A

s parents, we seek schools for our children that will best position them for a successful life’s journey.

i believe that the best schools are those that present excellent academic programs (a given) as well as go beyond to provide each student a broad range of opportunities to create, serve, lead, and experience the rewards that come from active engagement in sports, performing arts and group activities. These rewards — lessons about effort, struggle, resilience, responsibility to others and self-understanding — help students understand and appreciate the strengths, weaknesses, viewpoints and abilities of others. Each student should experience these rewards, for i know what great lessons they all hold. Regardless of background or talent, there is great short- and long-term value in having children participate in sports, fine arts, leadership / club activities and service. All school communities offer these opportunities, but it’s often not possible for each individual to experience the entire range. in other words, there are many school cultures that require specialization as a condition to participation or have specialization as a by-product (due to expectations like year-round club sports commitments or excessive nightly homework requirements). i believe that specialization too early in life is too limiting for the majority of students. Rather, i am a proponent of broad participation and balance through at least the early part of high school. A balanced experience for all students offers more opportunities for personal growth, especially in the type of skills that will be necessary for 21st century success. These include the ability to understand and communicate with others, the ability to work independently and responsibly and the ability to understand how your expertise can relate to and work with the individual characteristics and expertise of others. Great growth comes to children and adolescents through the learning opportunities that come from stretching and trying new things. When we humans stretch, we often develop new flexibility and increased power. When we exercise the muscles of our experiences, we also develop greater perspective. continued on page 28

Expanding to K-5 over the next 2 years!

When we venture into a broader array of activities, we discover commonalities, traits and truths that are widely shared, perhaps universal. Those who are open to seeing commonalities across seemingly different activities are more likely to understand and model a universal truth like the idea that hard work and perseverance lead to success. When students play a sport and an instrument, these lessons become clearer. Further, lessons about collaboration and team (responsibility) common to performing arts, athletics and activities such as student government become much more apparent to students when they have meaningful experiences in all of those realms. Breadth of opportunity in school also helps students on their journey of personal discovery. The sense of accomplishment, belonging and purpose that comes from balance helps to develop that most important of attributes — confidence. imagine how the athlete grows when she steps on the stage or throws a graceful pot on the potter’s wheel. imagine the growth of the uncoordinated or nonathletic student who is genuinely cheered by teammates after scoring a basket or finishing a race. Imagine the benefits experienced by all students from the commitment and motivation that comes from participating in a community service club. These are among the most deep, satisfying and impactful moments our children can experience. They give rise to perspective, to a way of viewing the world and their place in it that leads to understanding of self and of others. And isn’t that what life, especially a good life, is all about? The balanced experience for every child is a proven path to building confidence. It is a cornerstone of a great education. pp. Just four years ago, if you had told me that app would be among the most used words in our vernacular as well as among the most used software tools, i wouldn’t have believed it. But here we are today, with more than 500,000 on the market. now our smartphones and tablets, such as the iPad, are more than gadgets. SecuraFone — Download for Free Available on iTunes and Android Market Eventually your teen will get a driver’s license. When that happens this GPSbased app will allow you to track your child’s every movement. Track speed, location and even establish virtual boundaries, receiving text messages when they are crossed. While free to download, there is an $8.99 monthly fee. iStudiez Pro — $2.99 Available on iTunes. Time management skills are important in college. This app lets users organize schedules and assignments, track grades and sync the information with a Mac or iPad. Apps were designed to make our lives easier, whether tracking finances or helping your child prepare for a spelling bee. However, keep in mind that whenever you input sensitive information, such as banking data, you may be exposing your private information to the third-party developer that created the app. Both iTunes and Android Market have strict app guidelines, but they’re not perfect. hen it comes to personal goals, getting in better financial shape ranks with losing weight. yet only one of them requires a large amount of time and effort. Padding your wallet and savings account can be accomplished with a small amount of research and, in some cases, a focused phone call or two. Here are a half dozen of our favorite moneysaving fixes.

Target auto/property insurance costs

Let’s start with what many consider a couple of life’s necessary expenses. i’ve always compared policy coverage and costs. Then this year without warning or any traffic violations, our auto policy shot up $500. i made one call to AAA where they ran my details and coverage preferences through three or four companies. in the time it took for me to give them all my details via phone (about 15 minutes), i saved $400 on our annual premium.

Roof inspection can lead to big returns

never underestimate the value of a roof/wind mitigation inspection even if your roof is over 10 years old. My insurance agent put me in touch with a qualified wind mitigation inspector who came out and submitted a report complete with photos directly to my insurance company. My investment totaled 30 minutes of time to set up the appointment and $150 for the inspection, which is good for five years. In return, we are paying $800 less a year for our homeowner’s insurance due to the

..........................................................

fact that inspection showed our old roof adhered to hurricane codes and was well-constructed.

Call on your cable

Much has been written on all the ways you can live without cable television, still most people, especially those who are not technically savvy, are holding on to their Verizon and Brighthouse accounts. These two along with the dish companies fight for each other’s customers. Take a look at your bill then call your cable provider and explain you would consider switching if they are not able to shave a few dollars off of your monthly phone/internet/television bundle. i’ve heard from more than a handful of viewers that they have saved $20 to $40 a month with this single phone call.

Couponing need not be extreme to rake in big savings

When the recession hit, couponing became the new black. Who has the time right? i found if you only spend an hour to 90 minutes a week on this you’ll trim $40 to $50 off each grocery bill. There are several websites out there that simply and effectively help you pair coupons with sales at your favorite stores. One of my favorites, Truecouponing.com, is locally run. The True Couponing people also offer free workshops! And if you want to earn money while you shop online, check out Ebates which allows you to earn cash back at many online retailers.

that one third of all homeowners have enough equity in their homes to refinance. If that describes you, call your lender now! interest rates are at historic lows. if you bought your home before the downturn, chances are you are paying 6 percent or more. if you are paying 6 percent on a $200,000 loan and refinance down to 4 percent, your payment drops by about $250. Think of all you could do with an extra $3,000 a year.

Ramp up your 401k

I recently placed a call to my financial adviser and asked what, if anything, my husband and i should be doing differently. Without hesitation he said raise the bar on your 401k. Here is his reasoning. Adding 5 percent more of your income before taxes does not make a big difference in your take-home pay, but in 20 years it could mean tens of thousands more in your retirement account. And odds are you’ll be in a lower tax bracket when you retire, meaning you’ll pay less taxes on it than you would now. If you have a consumer problem or an investigative idea, the ABC Action News I-Team is an email away. Drop them a line at iteam@abcactionnews.com.

Refinance your home

i understand that millions of homeowners are underwater on their homes, but i recently read

Extraordinary girl Violin player, excellent student, animal lover, Girl Scout — these descriptions all fit 16-yearold Maggie Westlake, the only girl in a family with four boys. She has five dogs, two cats and a rabbit so it should come as no surprise that she’s in the veterinary assisting magnet program at Tampa Bay Technical High. She’s also the concert master for the school’s orchestra. She also has been a Girl Scout for 10 years, earning Bronze and Silver Awards.

What makes you happy? Why? i love hanging out with my friends. They always know how to make me laugh. We always act so crazy around each other and can make even the most boring situations into a memory.

Who is your biggest inspiration or role model? Why? i know this sounds cheesy, but it would have to be my mom and my friends. i’m naturally a shy and quiet person, but my friends and mom always push me out of my comfort zone and make me try new experiences. When i met my best friend Alexandria in sixth grade, i was a very awkward person while she was very outgoing. The saying opposites attract definitely applies here. If it weren’t for her, i wouldn’t be playing the violin or going to Tampa Bay Tech. My mom was the one that signed me up for Girl Scouts. She is always there to help and support me.

What is your favorite thing to do with your family? Honestly, my brothers and i have the best time just hanging out around the house playing games. We love playing Twister and Life, but our all-time favorite would have to be Super Munchkin. it is a slightly complex game but amazingly fun.

Sharing tales of leadership, community and hope.

What advice do you have for girls your age?

What does Girl Scouts of America mean to you?

Don’t ever base your actions on what other people say. i think peer pressure is always present in kids’ lives, even more so in high school. I remember trying to fit in with the “cool” kids in elementary school, and, looking back, i realize how silly that was. in high school, kids definitely need to stay true to themselves and their personal values and morals. Also, what may seem important now (such as dating the hot football player) isn’t going to mean anything in a couple years.

it means having fun while helping out in the community. no matter what we’re doing me and my friend Savannah, also a Girl Scout, can always find some way to have fun. Girl Scouts also means family. We are always there for each other and help each other out when we need it most. We know that we can depend and trust each other.

What are your aspirations for the future? My final goal is to be a veterinarian for large and exotic animals. i will graduate high school with my certification as a veterinarian assistant, which i can use to get a job in college. i would like to go to the University Of South Florida for my bachelor’s degree, then the University of Florida for my veterinary schooling.

What is your favorite way to relax? i listen to music or read a book. i listen to all genres, but when i’m trying to relax, i listen to country. i mainly read supernatural and fiction books.

If you could change the world in one way, what would it be? i would want there to be better role models for girls. Most girls out there are looking up to these crazy pop stars that are size 2 and sing about drugs. i personally listen to this type of music, so i know. it’s OK to listen to it, just don’t let the ideas go to your head and think that it’s OK to act like these stars do. i would also want people to not judge each other. Apparently, some people think that i’m preppy because i don’t talk to them. Really, it’s just because i’m shy! you wouldn’t want somebody to judge you since most of the time the assumption is completely wrong.

What is your favorite experience? i honestly can’t choose just one. My favorite experiences vary from camping with my Girl Scout troop in St. Augustine, having cake icing fights with my Girl Scout buddy Savannah at meetings or just every day at school with my friends.

What message do you want to share with other girls and their families? Make fun memories. young people are always looking to get older, while the older generation is always wishing to go back. Why can’t everybody just be happy with where they are in life? Try to make this time full of events you can look back on and smile about.

Tell us about your community projects? For my bronze award, I made a butterfly garden at my elementary school. i taught the kids about the stages of butterflies and helped them make terrariums to take home. For my silver award, i made dog treats and toys for animals at the Humane Society. i also volunteered at the Pet Expo with a local dog shelter that had a no-kill policy, and helped them find good homes for some of their dogs. i am working on my Gold Award. i am most likely going to continue with helping homeless and abandoned animals. Healthy Relationships Conference, Just for Women The Palm Harbor Family Counseling Center is hosting an informative conference and fundraiser designed with women in mind. Diane Miller Mandell is a licensed clinical social worker and owner of the Palm Harbor center, 2311 Alternate 19, Suite One. She and her team are setting out to help those who often find themselves in the traditional roles of nurturers and caretakers, often losing sight of their own needs, desires, goals and identity. On March 3, the Family Counseling Center is hosting Women in Healthy Relationships, a conference designed for all women who want to create healthier relationships with themselves, their bodies, and their loved ones. “When life gets tough, as it sometimes will, remember you have got what it takes. it’s something that women who are multitasking often don’t remember and need to reconnect with in order to continue to be effective in all spheres of their lives,” Mandell says. The conference is 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Countryside Country Club, 3001 Countryside Blvd., in Clearwater. Speakers include an area psychiatrist, dietitian and psychotherapists. The day also will feature opportunities for guests to engage in pampering and play, including massages, art experiences, healthy recipes, organization advice, skin care services, fitness consultations, samplers of yoga and zumba and giveaways. A portion of each ticket sold, in addition to all drawing proceeds, will benefit the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals-Tampa Bay Chapter. Tickets are $60 each or two for $110 (price includes lunch). Contact the Palm Harbor Family Counseling Center at 727-254-9183 or visit www.phcounseling.com to register.
