FROM THe eDITOR
it’s crazy to think that it’s already March, which means it’s time for the launch of our annual Summer Camp Guide! Each year, we gather the best summer camps from all over the Tampa Bay area and compile them in an easy-to-read guide to help parents plan for the summer. Whether you’re looking for camps in Pasco, Pinellas or Hillsborough counties, we’ve got you covered starting on page 10.
Me with friends Liss ette Campos and Jen McVan at the Pepin Sig
Heart nature Event on Vale ntine’s Day. Speaking of summer, we hope you and yours will join us April 6 at the sixth annual Summer Splash at the Glazer Children’s Museum in downtown Tampa. if you’ve never attended, what are you waiting for? We feature everything you need to make your family’s summer fun, safe and full of adventure. Attendees also will enjoy live entertainment, activities, giveaways every 30 minutes, including free weeks of camp, and all of the exhibits at the state-of-the-art Glazer Children’s Museum. Plus, the first 150 kids to arrive get a goodie bag filled with treasures!
As we bring back our Extraordinary Woman feature, we highlight Hillsborough County firefighter Tobi Porter. On page 52, she talks about how she puts out fires at work and at home. i hope you enjoyed Paul Guzzo’s feature last month. He sure is funny and has lots of stories to share with us. Check out this month’s tale on page 44. This month we share a unique point of view on violence and our sons. Dr. Ted zeff talks about the damage that a machismo culture can have on our young boys and how we can go about preventing them from falling into the trap. His tips are on page 32. Don’t forget to tune in to ABC Action News this month. Each Thursday, i’ll be discussing summer camps that will help your kids thrive and have their best summer adventure yet. See you at Summer Splash!
We love to hear from you. Don’t forget to become a fan on Facebook and get daily updates, enter contests, share pictures and chat with other families. You can check us out at TBParenting.com, too, or follow us on Twitter @tbparenting.

S
ince the 1999 Columbine shooting, there have been 31 school shootings in the U.S. Violence and violent images permeate our society. Boys are constantly bombarded with the false information that real men must always be strong, aggressive, tough, in control and repress their feelings. Boys are continually saturated with this distorted version of manhood from television and movies, video games, the internet, peers, coaches and other adults. Over the past 15 years, the violent video games and movies children have been exposed to have become more graphic. And now the ubiquitous internet allows our boys to be constantly brainwashed with stereotypical images of how a man is supposed to behave. Many boys are taught from an early age to act tough and repress their emotions. it’s important to understand that violent male behavior may stem from the perpetrator’s fear that he isn’t behaving aggressively enough. However, the behavior that is associated with girls (actions that demonstrate empathy, sensitivity and compassion) are also natural male traits. They are simply not recognized as such in many societies. Boys need to be taught that sensitivity and compassion are natural male traits.
Combat the Culture of Violence
1
Never tolerate anyone shaming your son when he expresses gentle, compassionate behavior. Help your son understand the causes for society’s negativity toward gentleness in males and talk with your son about all of the positive aspects of being a compassionate boy.
2
Monitor your son’s exposure to violence as much as possible and provide nonviolent games and activities. Encourage your son to hang out with friends who enjoy less-violent games. Frequently discuss the harmful effects that exposure to violence can have on him.
make him less likely to mistreat an animal.
4 5
Have your son interact with people of different faiths, nationalities and races, to learn the commonality of humanity.
Expose your son to the arts and increase your son’s respect for Mother Nature by visiting an orchard, or nursery, spending time at a lake, river or the ocean, or gardening.
6
For dads, talk often with your boy about what it really means to be a man. Reassure him that he doesn’t need the approval of aggressive boys, star athletes or the alpha male to feel good about himself. Let your son know that it’s OK for him to express fear and sadness and ask for help. Discuss with your son the detrimental consequences of violent males being so frequently extolled in the media. Read books or watch movies with your son about the lives of great spiritual men — Jesus, Moses, Buddha — and discuss how they have created peace on Earth through righteous behavior.
7
Make sure you always defend your boy if others shame him when he expresses his feelings. Teach your son how to respond to aggressive children by role-playing with him. Model setting limits with others so that your son will learn how to set boundaries with violent peers. Let your son know that it’s OK to set personal boundaries with others rather than going along with peer pressure.
8
To increase your son’s compassionate nature, it would be good sometimes to do activities with your son that help people, animals, and the environment, such as planting trees or cleaning up trash in your community. Volunteer to help out in a hospital, nursing home or animal shelter. if you have carpentry skills, you and your son could help a neighbor, friend or relative fix up their house or your own house.
3
Taking care of a pet not only teaches a boy responsibility, but through cuddling a kitten, for example, he will learn about the sanctity of all life. Caring for a pet will
Saving Our Sons A 10-step plan to keep them nonviolent By Ted Zeff, Ph.D.
9
Since boys learn differently from girls, encourage your son’s teacher to incorporate more movement during instruction and take physical breaks between subjects, incorporating active learning games and more outdoor learning. Creating goals and using games will create motivation. Assemble a team of at least three parents of boys to meet with your son’s teacher and/or principal (or your PTA) to discuss how to make your son’s class more boy-friendly.
10
Encourage your son’s teacher to create a class constitution with the help of the students, detailing how they should treat one another, and ask the teacher and students to sign it. Suggest that your son’s teacher give rewards to students for kindness and good sportsmanship. Ask your son’s teachers to read and discuss exciting tales that promote noble and brave qualities of heroes who help others. you and your son’s teacher should let him know that everyone has different abilities and interests and that those differences need to be respected. Once this generation learns that love and compassion for all living beings is the most important value, there will be a veritable leap in consciousness on the planet. Wars and conflicts will become a thing of the past because wars begin in the minds of people. And there is no room for human or environmental destruction in the political or corporate leader with a consciousness saturated with love and compassion for all human beings and Mother Earth. Ted Zeff, Ph.D., is the author of Raise an Emotionally Healthy Boy: Save Your Son from the Violent Boy Culture. Visit www. drtedzeff.com to learn more.

hildren in all schools learn the basics: reading, writing, mathematics and science. Though the methods of delivery may differ, the academic content is fairly constant. These basic skills are very important, but they are not the only skills that matter. How do we teach children the critical skills that will lead to social and emotional health? How do schools build confidence and resilience? How do we build character? How do we instill the skills that will help them find meaning in their lives both in school and well after they graduate? Students today often lead lives that involve much more pressure and stress than we faced while growing up. These pressures come from current economics, worries about this generation’s economic prospects, family structure, the grueling schedules we keep and the media-stoked consumer culture. This culture includes sex at every turn and values fame over character (hence the reality show phenomenon).
Technology also brings with it both great opportunities and great challenges. By giving our children (our not-yet-completely-formed and mistake-prone offspring) access to texting, sound and video recording and their instantaneous worldwide publication and broadcasting capabilities, we are playing with fire. It’s really hard to take something back after you’ve hit send. The technological methods of communication, while giving us opportunities, also tend to promote a culture that devalues face-to-face interaction and conversation, deliberation and building meaningful relationships. (it’s much harder to say something nasty when you’re face-to-face.)
impact on curiosity, ambition and motivation. it is also the case that stressed-out children are more likely to be at-risk for self-destructive behaviors. They’re more likely to lose their way. School should be a place that cultivates social and emotional connection and the ability to interact and communicate with others. Psychologist Martin Seligman has identified a number of traits that, if developed, make a life of meaning and purpose much more likely. They include self-control, optimism, grit (perseverance), zest, curiosity, social and emotional intelligence, resilience, gratitude and joy. (See Seligman’s book Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-Being.) Schools can become more effective at instilling these characteristics in students only by placing priority on them. They must BE the curriculum in every interaction, in every subject, in every activity. The surest way to accomplish this is to have an environment of intention populated with teachers who care both about what they teach and whom they teach and teachers who are adept at building strong relationships with their students. Beyond this, schools also need to provide healthy doses of media literacy, experiences with diversity, lessons on understanding social cues and experiences that encourage the development of self-control (which requires self-awareness). i also advocate for school cultures that value opportunity and balance. if we develop school cultures that deliberately focus on social and emotional health, we will do a great deal to help our children learn to embrace the best of themselves. And we will in turn help the world become a better place.

y friend Corey probably has the coolest job of anyone i know. As a special effects makeup artist, he has worked on numerous Hollywood blockbusters – Seabiscuit, S.W.A.T., The Last Samurai, X-Men , Pirates of the Caribbean, G.I. Joe, Lincoln. So i was shocked that when i asked him, “How cool do your teenage sons think you are?” He replied, with a laugh, “They’re teenagers. They don’t think i’m cool at all.” Later that night, i slumped into depression. if Corey’s sons don’t think he is cool, i have no shot of ever impressing my sons when they become teens. Corey turns mortals into heroes and monsters for a living. i’m just a writer. i type. Then i realized that while my young sons who currently think i am cool will one day turn into teens who don’t, they will one day realize how cool a dad i have always been. Most young men are probably like i was when i was single. We pictured ourselves being the cool dad —the father to watch football with because they think we were once star athletes, the one to come to for advice on women because they think we were studs and the person of choice to share a first beer because they think we were once party animals. And for a while, it does work out like that. When i was a little kid, i thought my dad was Superman. He could press me over his head with the slightest of ease, toss me across a pool without a wince and throw a baseball all the way from the outfield to home plate. And i thought that whatever his job was it must be cool because he was the coolest guy i knew! Then, as i got older, he ceased to be Superman and became Clark Kent without a super alter ego.
My father didn’t do anything wrong to change my outlook. it was due to my ignorance. i cannot speak for women but this ignorance seems to be a trait with which men are born. Perhaps the best way to explain it to women is through an example with which most of you have experienced — men’s perceived fear of commitment. Men don’t shy away from settling down because we are afraid, but because it takes us longer than women to mature to the point that we can grasp reality. When we first meet a woman, she is perfect – gorgeous, sexy, funny, thoughtful and so on. We fall in lust with the skin deep perception of her. Then we learn the truth – no one is perfect. Everyone has faults. As the woman turns from fantasy to reality, we begin looking at other women – women we only know skin deep. Women whom we falsely believe to be perfect. So we leave our realistic woman for another fantasy and repeat the process. Luckily, we do mature (some later than others) and learn that imperfections in a woman make her as special as her perfections and we fall in love. in a way, this mimics a boy’s relationship with his father. As i grew into a teenager, i realized my father was not Superman. i realized that he had physical limitations. And when he came home from work, i saw how tired he was and i heard him complain about his boss. i thought perhaps he does not have a cool job at all. Then i would see professional athletes seemingly defying the laws of nature with their abilities and i would read about astronauts and explorers and wish my father was more like them. i was too young to realize these individuals had flaws of their own. I only knew them skin deep and that allowed them to seem perfect and cooler than my father. in my friend Corey’s case, his sons probably see him exhausted after

work and then see how cool the actors look on screen without realizing it is their father who helps the actors look that cool. in reality, these cool actors also go home tired at the end of the day, complaining about the director and producers who run the film set. Just like how my perception of women changed as i matured and allowed me to realize how special my wife is, so did my perception of my father. Now that i am a man struggling to find a balance between career and fatherhood, i realize how special my father is. i realize that coming home from work tired and frustrated didn’t make him “uncool.” i realize that it takes a Superman to continue to push on during those early days of a career in order to reach the pinnacle. Some men give up and settle for mediocrity. My father never settled and today he is one of the top political lobbyists in the state of New Jersey. i realize that my father’s physical limitations don’t make him Clark Kent. i realize that it takes a Superman to continue to find the energy to keep up with a teenager’s energy level day in and day out. i played baseball, basketball and soccer and my father was in the backyard with me every night helping me to get better. And i realize that even though my 7-year-old and 18-month-old sons’ views of me as Superman will one day be clouded, when all is said and done, if i do what a father is supposed to do, my sons will grow up to think i am cool because the coolest thing in the world a man can be is a good father … or UFC Heavyweight champ. Luckily for UFC fighters, I’ll probably stick to fatherhood. To learn more about what Paul Guzzo does not know about parenting, visit www. facebook.com/TheOverNightFamilyMan.

t’s a simple question really, “Are you a match?”
For a young man in Germany, the answer saved the life of a little girl in Sarasota. She was 9, dying and desperate for a bone marrow transplant. Not a single person on the National Bone Marrow Registry was “a match.”
Desperate for a miracle, her mom turned to the international registry. On that list, Kelly Marsh found a 1 in 14 million match! He was a school teacher from Germany. Five thousand miles away, he agreed to be the match for Hannah. “When i did this, when i was lying there, it was just four and a half hours of my life and a couple of syringes,” said donor Patrick. “it didn’t feel like i was doing something big at all.” it was a story that Meredyth Censullo and i talked about incessantly for weeks! We counted down to the day when Hannah met her donor at the airport. “i can’t imagine how it must feel to meet the person who saved your life,” Censullo says. “Many donors never have the opportunity to come face to face with the person whose life they changed forever. it must have been surreal for Patrick to see Hannah.” i invited the third grader to join me on Positively Tampa Bay and shared daily updates with Censullo in advance of her visit. it was all new to me but for Censullo the bone marrow registry was far from a novelty. She was on it — had been for 13 years! “in 1999, while working for a television

station in Virginia, i interviewed an elderly man who was trying to raise money for his daughter, Debbie Parker, a married mother of three, who was dying of liver disease,” Censullo explained. “in the story, i mentioned that Parker was eligible for a living liver donor, a then experimental surgery. Within minutes of my story airing, the station received a call from Ken Schuler, a viewer who wanted to help. He was a longtime blood donor. He was on the National Bone Marrow Registry and had the same rare blood type, B positive, as Parker.
Taking Action for your Health Campaign on ABC Action News. We invite you to join us at the race. We’ll be easy to spot, talking a million miles a minute to a little girl with a big dream. Will you be a match for someone? Little Hannah thinks so and so do we. See you there! Meredyth Censullo and Lissette Campos are part of the ABC Action News team. Visit www. abcactionnews.com for more information on the Taking Action for Your Health Campaign
“Within weeks Ken became the first person in the world to donate a portion of his liver to a stranger. When i asked Ken why he made the call to the television station that day he said, ‘if i was standing on the bank of a river and saw someone drowning, i wouldn’t turn and walk away. i’d dive in and help!’ The day i enlisted in the National Bone Marrow Registry it was because of Ken.” Over the years, Censullo has been a partial match once. Seventy-percent of patients don’t have a matching donor within their family and depend on the registry to survive. “i am still hoping to one day be a bone marrow donor,” Censullo says. Schuler in Virginia was her inspiration for joining the registry. She and Hannah became mine. Last April, ABC Action News and the Be the Match Foundation launched their inaugural run in the Tampa Bay area, raising nearly $44,000 with dozens of participants taking the added step of enlisting in the National Bone Marrow Registry! This year, the Be the Match Walk/Run has been moved up to March and coincides with our second annual

Extraordinary woman

by AngelA ARDOlInO
Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.
As a firefighter/paramedic, a lieutenant with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, a wife and a mother of two, Tobi Porter is accustomed to putting out fires, literally and figuratively. it was her ingenuity that has opened up a new chapter in her life, entrepreneur. “i breastfed both of my girls for just over 1 year,” Porter says. “i did a lot of pumping in the back of the Rescue and Engine and at the station to achieve this, which was a very hard fought for achievement.” Because of her 24-hour shifts, Porter recognized a need to improve breast milk storage for working moms, inventing Milk Trays, which allow moms to freeze their expressed breast milk in single-ounce servings. That way only the ounces needed are thawed for each bottle, eliminating wasted milk. The entrepreneur has run Sensible Lines LLC for almost six years and says it is a great feeling to be able to provide essential nutrients to your baby and continue to do a demanding and rewarding job.
What do you think is the secret to your family’s success? My husband is so supportive of everything i do. Being gone for 24 hours, he has to be the “it” Dad while i am gone. it also helps that we do the same job. We have crazy lives both working opposite 24 hour shifts. (Clay is a firefighter/EMT and lieutenant for St. Pete Fire Rescue.) That means we only get to spend time together every third day! So communication is the key to our marriage. We both also have jobs outside of the fire department. I have my business and he is an instructor for the Fire Academy for Hillsborough Community College. So you can see that the time we do have together is precious and we have both learned that sometimes it’s not always how much time you have but what you do with that time. Family always comes first.
What is your biggest fear? That in wearing so many hats i fail to make sure i am there for my girls. Being gone for 24 hours every third day has its disadvantages. Then i also work on my business at home. i know that even though i’m there in body, i’m busy responding to emails, filling orders, doing invoices. I don’t want my daughters to feel like they have to schedule an appointment to spend time with me. i want to inspire them and empower them but i don’t want them to feel like i’ve forgot them along the way.
What advice would you give to other women? you can be anything and do anything you set your mind to. We are amazing and glorious, kind and generous, courageous and strong. Never underestimate yourself. Never doubt yourself. Never accept limits. We can inspire a nation. We can change the world.
What is your proudest moment? i think one of the greatest things i have accomplished besides my wonderful daughters is hearing that other female firefighters have been encouraged and supported to breastfeed by the male firefighters on the job. It now is considered the norm! i have even been told by some of their wives that they are great supportive breastfeeding husbands because of me.
What is your biggest achievement? inventing Milk Trays and knowing that my product is helping moms achieve their breastfeeding goals. So many moms today have to work and breastfeeding rates in the U.S. significantly drop after the first three months, mainly because moms are now pumping and storage bags have been the only thing available to them. i have invented a product that gives them a better choice for storage and in doing this, will hopefully be a part of increasing
breastfeeding rates in the U.S.
What makes you happy? Several things actually: spending quality time with my girls, romantic getaways with my husband. (A lot of times that just means dinner and a movie. But when you don’t see very often each week, it’s the little things that really count.) Running into a patient or one of their family members (when i’m in uniform) and having them tell me how much i helped them. Having a customer email me and letting me know how much my Milk Trays have helped in her breastfeeding journey.
How do you relax and take time for yourself? i love to play video games! i don’t really get a lot of chances to do it but it really is fun. My family has an Xbox 360 and i love to play zombie fighting games with my brother in law. it is a great way to relieve stress and frustration. i actually started playing after i had my second daughter. i was diagnosed with postpartum depression and i read in an article that playing video games could help and it did.
How do you feel about the Tampa Bay area? We live in an amazing town! Tampa is really an up and coming city with so many great places to spend time with your family and friends. Tampa is a city that supports women in many different aspects and the opportunities are out there.
What else would you like to share with our readers? I love being a firefighter/paramedic. I love that I am opening up doors for women in Fire Rescue. i am excited about the new chapter in my life (being 40). i am glad that i have my business to look forward to and i hope that i can convince my husband to have maybe one more bundle of joy in 2013!

Florida Hospital Tampa Spotlights Women’s Health Florida Hospital Tampa launches a three-part seminar series this month designed to begin a dialogue between women and their physicians. Recent data indicates that half of all women have never talked to their doctors about health issues occurring below the waist, more commonly known as pelvic health conditions. On March 4, the Half of All Women series, which focuses on below-the-belt wellness and prevention, kicks off. The seminars, set for 6-8 p.m., are free and open to the public. Each event offers guests important health information, food and the opportunity to register for door prizes and a grand prize drawing for a spa package. Topics include: Your Hips Don’t Lie (March 4) Maintaining strong, healthy bones is essential as we grow older. Attendees will learn how to strengthen the pelvic ring of protection — the hips and knees — enabling them to stay active. Following the seminar, guests will get to put that bone and muscle strengthening to work in a beginner salsa class. Protect Your Bottom Line (April 16) Participants will learn why colon health is important. Constipation, lower abdominal pain and diarrhea are quite common and there are ways to get these conditions under control. After the seminar, a financial expert will help guests take control of their finances with inspiration for developing a plan for their financial bottom line. Get Your Groove Back 2.0 (May 16) This popular seminar returns with a panel of experts to discuss pelvic health issues and answer questions. Attendees can learn what to do to better manage menopause, heavy periods, urinary incontinence and painful intercourse. To register, visit www.fhtampa.org/spiritofwomen or call 877-482-4362.
