Being featured in any magazine, for that matter, was never even on my radar. I simply enjoyed raising my three children with my husband, Jeremy, and spending time with friends and family. But in 2017, I lost my son, Kacen to a tragic accidental drowning. This led to my discovery of the horrifying facts surrounding Florida’s child drowning statistics. I became determined to enact real change, and so I founded K.A.C.E.N.’S C.A.U.S.E.

GMF KIDS FEST

a sweet rush of music to the head

By Tara Payor, Ph.D.

lato said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” Music is one of the most beautiful gifts we can bestow on our children, and Tampa Bay kids can tune in to the fun with Gasparilla Music Festival’s Kids Fest. “Kids Fest gives children a taste of music in a carefree format, which differs from pressure-filled lessons sometimes forced on kids,” says Kids Fest captain Melanie Rouse. “Kids Fest exposes children to performing arts they may not otherwise be interested in. It’s never stale.” The Kids Fest team keeps its finger on the pulse of Kindie Rock—a genre blending singers’ sensibilities with children’s themes. This year’s Kids Fest headliner, Laurie Berkner, is a Kindie world shining star with 12 best-selling, award-winning albums. She’ll play two sets inside Glazer Children’s Museum, on Sunday, March 10 (1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.). While enjoying the kindie queen, families get free admission to Glazer. “Glazer has been a great partnership for us—pushing music friendly activities,” Rouse says. The reciprocity is rewarding for both organizations, as it promotes kids’ interest in the museum and music. Kids Fest is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 and 10 at Kiley Gardens inside Curtis Hixon Park and is free for kids 12 and under. Across two stages, Kids Fest includes the Kuumba Drummers, crafting with Kraftologee, face painting, and instrument area—Tampa’s Little Kids Rock brings an instrument petting zoo and provides onsite mini-lessons. Kids have made maracas and tie-dye shirts. “It was a big hit and left kids with a keepsake they hopefully keep wearing,” Rouse says. Also playing this year is Bricks 4 Kidz. “They build stuff with the kids and bring GMF LEGO displays. It’s great for letting kids get creative,” Rouse says. Tampa General Hospital is a Kids Fest sponsor this year, and will bring wellness-based interactive components to the event. There’s also a silent disco and cameos by Tampa Bay Rays’ DJ Kitty, Tampa Bay Lightning’s ThunderBug, and local favorite Mr. Tommy. Kids Fest is a hit because of its tireless volunteers. In fact, Rouse got her start with GMF as a volunteer during the festival’s inception. “I’m a music lover, and I have tried every instrument I can.” As the captain of GMF’s Kids Fest, Melanie is able to help cultivate and nurture a love for music, arts and culture in Tampa Bay’s children.

best picks By Heather DeManche

ADD A U-PICK FARM TO YOUR SPRING BUCKET LIST

Upicktopia is truly a one-stop shop for year-round U-picking, and a great location for both newbies and veteran U-pickers!

pring is coming and that means sweet, juicy and memory-making fun U-picking at farms, orchards and groves in and around the Tampa Bay area. When I was a kid, my grandparents brought my brothers and I picking in Plant City and I still remember the sweet smell of those yummy ripe red berries and running the fields scooping them up and shoveling them into my mouth faster than we could put them in baskets. It's a good idea to check the social media pages of these venues or to call before you plan your trip, as hours can change daily based on weather and crop availability. Many of these venues update their Facebook pages weekly with times, dates and prices.

S

UPICKTOPIA

Upicktopia is a charming farm and winery that sits on 56 acres in Masaryktown, which is about 30 minutes north of Tampa. They offer strawberries, blueberries and blackberries when in season. Throughout the fall, winter and spring, the farm offers between 15 to 30 types of produce such as bell peppers, tomatoes, zucchini and collard greens. Upicktopia updates its Facebook page weekly and offers U-picking throughout the week. They also regularly host events with food trucks and live entertainment, but you are welcome to pack a lunch and eat under shaded trees at the picnic tables. Families are encouraged to visit with the turtle and chickens, as well as enjoy some fun on the group swings. And since they are a winery, there’s nothing wrong with a little fermented fruit juice for the adults!

KEEL & CURLEY

This popular winery located off I-4 offers U-pick peaches and blueberries in the spring, as well as U-pick vegetables during the winter and spring months. The U-pick blueberry season will kick off with their 12th annual Blueberry Festival, which takes place in early April over the course of two weekends.

14

TampaBayParenting.com MARCH 2019

Keel & Curley blueberry fields offer a treasure hunt for the little round fruit. Cool down after picking there at the full service restaurant while the kids enjoy the gated playground.

FARM FRESH TIPS FOR FIRST TIME PICKERS FROM A VETERAN PICKER WITH 3 BOYS “The early bird catches the worm.” The weather is more tolerable in the morning and you get the best selection for picking. Bring lots of H2O! Hydration is key while under the Florida sun. You might be picking for an hour or longer depending how much goes into your belly versus how much goes into your basket!

THE SOUTHERN PEACH COMPANY

This fifth-generation family farm in Lithia has all the charm peach picking has to offer, including a photo opportunity with an old fashioned truck as you enter the orchard. The century-old farm offers plenty of peaches to go around for everyone starting in late April. After picking, stop by Alafia River State Park which is just minutes away for some relaxation and fun under the trees.

FLORIDA SWEETIES

The friendly owners of Florida Sweeties will begin rotating between four orchards in the Dade City area staring in late April. Rotating orchards allows the pickers the best opportunity to go home with plenty of perfectly ripe peaches. One of their orchards, Florida Sweeties Naturals Orchard, is considered organically grown. The orchard updates its Facebook page weekly with location, price and time.

BLUEBERRY COTTAGE FARMS

Blueberry Cottage Farms in Lithia is a quaint farm providing delicious home-grown blueberries in a small, picturesque and extremely peaceful setting. Blueberry Cottage Farm is open on weekends and some select weekdays through May. The farm accepts both cash and credit.

It’s Florida, so sunscreen is a must! Hat and sunglasses are highly recommend as well if you’re picking later in the day. Sneakers and socks to protect from fire ant mounds are a strong suggestion with little ones running through the dirt fields. Most places provide baskets or buckets at no charge and place your harvest in a bag to take home. Picked fruits can bruise easily, so I suggest bringing a shallow container to place your harvest in for the drive home. If you are going with little ones, be prepared to have them covered in fruit juice. Picking is fun and they will probably eat more than they collect for consumption at home. Expect those cute picking outfits to get dirty. Bring plenty of wipes and play clothes.

DOOLEY GROVES

Located in Ruskin, Dooley Groves is open for juicy orange and tangerine picking from November through April. They are open rain or shine, seven days a week, with January and February being the best months for climbing the trees to pick Honeybells.

istock.com/primo-piano

HANCOCK GROVES

This century-old Florida farm located in Dade City offers a wide variety of citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines and grapefruit, as well as strawberry and peaches. Hancock Groves offers a great morning's worth of entertainment for the whole family.

THAN LIFE

dinos take over MOSI

By Anthony Pelaez

lthough dinosaurs lived millions of years ago, these prehistoric beasts continue to live on in the hearts and imaginations of children everywhere. Kids relish being able to identify the names of their favorite prehistoric pals and gobble up dino knowledge like hungry T-Rexes. Dinosaurs are awesome and kids know it! In MOSI’s new Dinovations Lab, a Jurassic-themed exhibition that opens this month, pint-sized paleontologists and their equally enthusiastic parents can check out a life-sized diplodocus skelton, which, at 90 feet in length, will be the star of the “base camp” exhibit. MOSI has known of the awesomeness of dinosaurs for decades and has engaged kids and families about paleontology through traveling exhibitions, camps and fossil digs. Creating a dinosaur exhibition was about answering the questions of excited dinosaur enthusiasts. Why were dinosaurs so big? What did dinosaurs eat? Why did the dinosaurs go extinct? And the number one question of MOSI's guests: Is it real? MOSI's dinosaur is an immense, realistic casting of actual fossilized bones. The diplodocus was one of the largest animals ever to roam our planet. Diplodocus, named for the formation of double beams on the underside of its tail, was a sauropod (long neck) that lived in North America about 150 to 155 million years ago during the late Jurassic Period. Unlike the Tyrannosaurus rex, it was a true Jurassic dinosaur. (Take that T-Rex.) One of its most significant features—besides being huge—is that the diplodocus had an extremely long tail. Paleontologists believe that the diplodocus would use its tail like a whip, capable of making sonic booms to scare off predators and/ or communicate with other diplodocus. Diplodocus was like a dino version of Indiana Jones! Besides featuring the coolest dinosaur of all time, MOSI's new Dinovations Lab will tap into the excitement of dinosaur enthusiasts of all ages with PaleoLab investigations, crawl-through challenges, dino-themed animation in Fossil Films, and an opportunity to touch actual dino poop. For families new to the prehistoric world, we hope that the Lab will inspire a love for the mystery and wonderment for an incredible time on our planet when dinosaurs ruled and mammals drooled.

Brittany and Jeremy Howard, twins Kacen and Kaedence, with big brother Kole.

By Brittany Howard

y amazing, wild, sweet and perfect little boy, Kacen, was such a fun and energetic 2-year-old. I used to tell him he was too smart for his own good, and how that would get him in trouble one day. I never would have dreamt those silly words would turn into a nightmare that would come true so quickly and in such an unfathomably tragic way. On Sept. 28, 2017— the day before his third birthday, Kacen, opened a sliding-glass door and bypassed an inadequate and defective pool gate that surrounded a pool— and fatally drowned. His twin sister witnessed her brother's tragic and final moments of life. She tried saving him by telling the adult baby-sitter that Kacen was in the pool…but it was too late. The pain of losing a child is beyond unbearable. It is deep. It is raw. It is something that could never be understood by a soul who’s never endured this kind of despair by losing a child. We all have choices in the midst of our emotions, and I decided to take this unrelenting pain and put it toward something proactive and positive. I started the non-profit organization, K.A.C.E.N.S. C.A.U.S.E., (Keeping Adults and Children Educated Nationwide Creating Awareness on Unsafe Swimming Environments). We currently have a bill sponsored and filed for this legislative session called Kacen’s Cause Act. It requires all Florida homes with pools to have two (instead of one) safety barriers installed at the time of transferring home ownership. Passing this law will make Florida a safer place for our children. Florida is an exceptionally high-risk state for child drownings, and is ranked in the top 3 states with most pools. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1 to 4 years old in the United States. Most child drownings happen in familiar places—and statistics show that 65 percent of them happen in their own pools and approximately 30 percent happen in pools owned by friends or relatives— like my son's case. Did you know that drowning is the third leading cause of death worldwide, according to the WHO (World Health Organization)? More than half of the child drowning victims had been out of sight of an adult for only 5 minutes or less. Most children involved in a drowning incident were not expected to be near or in the pool, yet that is where they were found. Drowning is a silent death, nothing like how the movies depict it. It is quick and quiet. There is no tell-tale warning! Most people think this would never happen to them, but unfortunately it can happen to anyone in the blink of an eye. The bottom line is that these are our children! The next generation! Our future! We must protect them! We must educate the adults and children of today on the current laws, guidelines, safety measures, and drowning awareness to help save the adults and children of tomorrow. Kacen could have been anything he wanted, but sadly he will never get the chance to follow the life path that was meant for him. It was stolen from him too soon and too quickly. From the depths of my heart and soul, I want to spread this awareness to protect, and prevent this from happening to every child who has a chance!

M

2018 TOTAL IN THE TAMPA BAY AREA DROWNINGS

Drowning kills more kids ages 1-4 than any other cause. Pool owners should install fences with a lock and self-closing gate that will keep children from accessing the pool when an adult is not present. Installing door alarms can alert a parent or caregiver that a door has been opened, especially if the door has access to any body of water including retention ponds, canals or even decorative water features. Young children can drown in as little as one inch of water. Ensure bathtubs, mop buckets and inflatable pools are drained after each use. Always provide adult supervision for children when they are in or around water. Children drown silently and in as little as 20 seconds. Designating a "water watcher" is a simple measure that ensures an adult is supervising children at all times when they are in or around water. Enrolling children in formal swimming lessons reduces their lifetime chances of drowning by 88 percent. Become CPR Certified. A drowning victim has a significantly increased chance of a positive outcome if CPR is started immediately versus waiting for first responders to arrive.

our child will watch and repeat everything that you do from birth to adulthood. When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, don’t you want to be the best role model possible? Involving the family in a wellness routine can begin at any age. Start easy, and remember to set realistic goals for yourself AND younger children. Find a family race that is not competitive, and involves all ages. Diaper dash and toddler trot races allow for children as young as six months of age to participate WITH their parents. While also entertaining, these races make the entire family feel a sense of accomplishment.

Y

5 WAYS TO GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED 1 Select a fun, family event that is a few months out. 2 Set goals and create an exercise log that everyone in the family can use.

Tape it to the refrigerator to record your workouts. Reward accomplishments with stickers and fun announcements when everyone is together. 4 On race day morning, write and distribute one positive message to each family member on a post-it note. Wait for each other at the finish line. 5 Frame your racing bibs together, and set new goals for the next race!

BO O K TO DAY!

DAY at GLAZER MATH AS EASY AS PIE

By Kate White, Glazer Childrens Museum

arch 14 is Pi Day (3.14... get it?) and it also happens to be the birthday of Albert Einstein, the father of modern physics! At Glazer Children’s Museum, we’re in the business of teaching through play, so when we decided to celebrate Pi Day we knew it had to be fun. But how do we share our love of the iconic number Pi and make math cool for kids? Throw a giant pie fight in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, of course! The event is free to all and includes pizza pie from Tampa Pizza Company. It even features special guest Albert Einstein himself, played by a museum Playologist. The kids come to get messy and have fun, but once they are here, it provides a great platform to talk about math with programs like the “Stump a Playologist” math challenge.

M

The purpose of the museum’s Pi Day event is to start a conversation about math in a fun and approachable way for children. Here are ideas to celebrate Pi Day with your family… and sneak in some math while you’re at it!

GO TO A PIZZERIA

Dine out (or in) as a family and while you eat, explain to your kids that Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Order several pizzas so you can cut each into a different number of slices to demonstrate the ratio of a single piece to the whole circle.

BAKE A PIE

Cooking can be a great family bonding experience, and the teachable moments are endless! It can help kids learn responsibility, planning, how to follow directions, and even math. While you bake, challenge your kids to measure out their own ingredients, then let them cut the slices when the pie is ready to be served. As you enjoy your treat, be sure to discuss Pi and fractions.

MAKE A MASTERPIECE

From fine motor skills to creativity to color mixing, painting is another family activity that can provide infinite opportunities for learning and fun. It can even be a platform to discuss Pi! Try to paint the symbol π and discuss how Greek letters are used to represent different mathematical concepts.

GO OUTDOORS

The Fibonacci sequence occurs frequently in nature (it’s when each number is the sum of the two preceding ones). It can be seen in flowers, pinecones, and seashells, to name a few. Go outside and try to spot natural occurring Fibonacci spirals, then explain to your kids the relationship to Pi. Here’s a tip, PBS has a fantastic 5-minute video on its website explaining the phenomenon.

SLING SOME PIES!

Participate in Glazer Children’s Museum’s epic pie fight in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, where you’ll get messy, eat pizza, sing happy birthday to Albert Einstein, and challenge your math skills with Pi-themed programs. MARCH 2019 TampaBayParenting.com

SOCIAL SUCCESS at summer camp

he rhythm of drums fills the room as campers play in unison, speeding up, slowing down and increasing volume at a leader’s direction. The drum circle is the culmination to a week of “Warrior Games” at CAMP IDS, a series of challenges such as obstacle courses, scavenger hunts and races that transform fifth- through eighth-grade students from a variety of schools into a team. A few classrooms away, campers watch with excitement as video games they designed come to life on computer screens. In the cafeteria, young bakers huddle to discuss their team’s decorating strategy to wow judges in a cupcake competition. On stage, musical theatre campers are rehearsing choreography they learned just days earlier, laughing and joking with new friends who share their love of theatre. Summer camp benefits students in many ways, keeping kids’ bodies and brains busy in the months before school starts up again. But attending camp helps students socially as well. Camp programs can build confidence, teach teambuilding and spark new friendships. Ninety-six percent of students surveyed in an American Camp Association study said that camp helped them make new friends. Almost as many campers said camp helped them get to know students who were different from them. And 70 percent of parents said they noticed their children gained confidence at camp.

T

NEW FRIENDSHIPS

CAMP IDS annually draws more than 1,000 students from across the Tampa Bay area, which makes it likely that campers will meet new people whether they attend one week or all seven. Though it is hosted at Corbett Prep – a private school for PreK3-8th grade – CAMP IDS attracts students from many different schools, including high schools. High school students enjoy the chance to delve deeper into their interests, learning

volleyball from Olympian Keba Phipps, for example, or auditioning for challenging musicals such as “Rent,” “Into the Woods” or “Pippin.” Many of the same families return year after year, and students look forward to reuniting with their “camp friends.” New students may experience first-day jitters but quickly find other like-minded friends, especially when their camps reflect their hobbies and interests. Enrolling in a Star Wars camp or Lego engineering immediately connects students to other campers who enjoy the same activities.

TEAMWORK

Camp provides students with the chance to work cooperatively with others to meet a common goal. Students learn how to balance responsibilities on projects and take turns demonstrating leadership, skills they will continue to draw from in school and the workplace. In Claymation and Lego Movie-Making, for instance, campers divide into small teams to storyboard movie ideas, build characters and sets to film and edit short movies. Broadcasting, Newspaper and Teen Magazine camps split up important roles so all students contribute to the final product. Cooking camp creates a balanced menu each morning, and every camper assumes responsibility for a different portion of a gourmet lunch.

In sports and recreation camps, campers must balance their roles for the sake of their team or group – after all, if everyone tries to go separate ways in canoeing, they’ll only succeed in turning in circles.

INCREASING CONFIDENCE

Three-quarters of campers surveyed in the American Camp Association study said summer camp gave them the chance to try activities they were afraid to do at first. And 63 percent of parents said their children continued those activities after camp ended. Camp can spark an interest in coding, fishing, painting, dancing and so much more. CAMP IDS offers different choices each week with the option to take full- or half-day camps for more variety. Under the guidance of experienced and supportive counselors, students see progress in a short time. They cheer their successful rocket launches, share books they write and illustrate, perform music mastered in band and display intricate figures designed and built in 3D printing. Summer camp is an important place and time for kids to grow. Fun activities in a low-pressure environment give campers the chance to stretch as they form friendships and uncover new interests. Throughout the summer, they even wind up making discoveries about themselves.

SPRING INTO SUMMER AWAKEN SUMMER IMAGINATION AT THE Y

By Lalita Llerena

ow did this happen? Just when your family got into the groove of the school routine for the New Year…the kids will soon be out for the summer. It seems the age-old question still stumps many of us parents around this time of year: “What am I going to do with the kids this summer?” Turns out, the answer is more important than you may think. When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Research shows that without access to out-of-school learning activities, kids fall behind academically. Kids also gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year. As spring turns to summer, plan ahead so your children aren’t idling away their summer days. Instead, the YMCAs of Tampa Bay want families to focus on helping children imagine what they can accomplish over the summer.

H

When a child is healthy, happy and supported, they can make great things happen. The Y strives to help kids find that potential within themselves. In addition to offering an enhanced summer camp curriculum to keep kids active in spirit, mind and body, the Y offers the following tips to help families develop healthy habits this summer that can have a lifetime effect:

HIGH FIVE THE FRUITS AND VEGGIES Make sure kids get at least five servings of fruits and veggies each day, the minimum number nutritionists recommend for healthy childhood development. And to keep kids’ taste buds evolving, have everyone in the family try at least one bite of a new fruit or vegetable at least once a month.

READ TOGETHER

The summer is a great time to enjoy books, and 30 minutes a day goes a long way! Take trips to the local library or create a family reading challenge to see who can log the most minutes of reading. Encourage youth to create their own stories as well.

GET MOVING!

Activities that require movement also help kids flex their mental muscle. Use materials in unique ways: ask kids to build models, manipulate tools or develop their own theatrical scenes.

PLAY TOGETHER

Play may be the best way to prevent childhood obesity. By putting more play into your family’s day, you will soon find yourself getting the activity that will have your family feeling energized and strong.

MAKE SLEEP A PRIORITY

Doctors recommend 10-12 hours of sleep a day for children ages 5-12 and 7-8 hours per night for adults. Sleep plays a critical role in maintaining our healthy immune system, metabolism, mood, memory and learning.

find your inner SUPERHERO TAMPA-HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY LIBRARIES OFFER COMIC THEMED EVENTS By Jennifer Hodges

With activities and resources for all interests, TampaHillsborough County Public Library is your source for information and recreation. We offer customers of all ages a chance to discover their inner superhero.

omic books and graphic novels have become one of the hottest genres in the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library system. Readers of all ages can find their favorite characters or discover new fandoms through a wide variety of digital and print materials. It’s no surprise then that comic-themed events at our libraries are drawing crowds, and Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library celebrates the wide array of fandoms through two annual “comic cons”: Tampa Bay LibCon and AfroCon. Tampa Bay LibCon premiered in 2015 to overwhelming community enthusiasm and is now entering its fourth year. The event is currently held at two library locations: the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library in Tampa and the SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin. Tampa Bay LibCon connects comic book and graphic novel enthusiasts with creators, experts and other fans. The event features art displays, panel discussions, tabletop gaming, kids’ crafts, author signings, cosplay contests where attendees dress in costumes based on their favorite characters, and interactive art demonstrations where artists give "how-to" lessons on drawing, inking, and other comic-making techniques. LibCon has become as important to our local comic and fandom worlds as the comics, movies and games that inspired the event, and the 4th Annual Tampa Bay LibCon will be held on Saturday, May 11. This year, LibCon is not the only opportunity to celebrate your fandom in our libraries. The success of the award-winning movie “Black Panther” brought attention to superheroes of color, and readers of all ages can explore the diversity found in comics through our extensive collection: bibliocommons.com/list/ share/1315902027/1329018657. Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library, we will host the 1st Annual AfroCon at the Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Public Library in Tampa on Saturday, March 30, 2019. This free family-friendly event will highlight superheroes of color through crafts, a fan art contest, photo ops, an escape room, gaming, a cosplay contest, and so much more!

FEAST OF FLAVOR SAMPLE DISHES LIKE THE PARK'S VERSION OF GRILLED ELOTE

CELEBRATING 5 YEARS, BUSCH GARDENS TAMPA BAY'S FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL RETURNS THIS SPRING By Rebecca Romzek

ampa Bay’s Food and Wine Festival at Busch Gardens returns this spring with a new menu and world-class entertainment. With more than 35 delicious dishes to pair with over 100 wines, craft brews and cocktails, park guests can explore a variety of flavors while enjoying a diverse concert line-up, including acts for all tastes. The Food & Wine Festival runs weekends from March 16 to April 28 and is included with admission to the park. In addition to returning fan favorites, this year’s menu boasts many daring new flavors inspired by cuisines around the country. Guests can begin their culinary road trip with grilled lamb chops featuring a 15-year balsamic drizzle from northern California. Foodies won’t want to miss mouthwatering Tex-Mex classics like chorizo queso fundido with sweet onions and shishito peppers or grilled elote – the park’s spin on Mexican street corn featuring cotija cheese and lime crema. Island delights feature flavors of paradise with Hawaiian-inspired delicacies including a dreamy pineapple upside down cake or Kona-crusted filet mignon with Maui onion butter. Nostalgic guests can even take a trip down memory lane with a visit to the 60th Anniversary cabin, featuring recipes inspired by historical Busch Gardens’ treats and snacks from decades gone by.

T

In addition to an exciting food and wine offering, this year’s festival features five unique tastings, including returning favorites and all new options. Throughout the event, guests can explore exotic spirits at signature vodka, bourbon, ice wine, tequila and sparkling wine tastings. The best way to savor and save on everything the festival has to offer is with a Food & Wine Festival Sampler. Guests can purchase a 5, 8 or 12-item sampler lanyard to use at each festival cabin to explore sample-sized dishes and drink offerings with ease. Pass members can purchase an exclusive 15-item sampler for the same price as a 12-item sampler. From country and rock to R&B, the Food & Wine Festival line-up reflects musical genres of all tastes. Fans can book the ultimate festival experience with one of two exclusive VIP packages available for each act, including reserved concert seating and a Sampler Lanyard. Concert headliners include Daughtry, Justin Moore, El Gran Combo, Boyz II Men, Foreigner and more. For the best value to enjoy all that the Food & Wine Festival has to offer, Florida residents can select a new Annual Pass. From monthly perks and discounts to complimentary experiences, guests can explore the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Passes for the benefits and value they want most.

hat golden grail we’ve been pining for since the end of winter break is almost here: Spring Break! Some of us have already booked our European city breaks, our ski trips and Caribbean all-inclusive resorts with the grandparents. But some of us are staying in town, which is just as good because we are lucky enough to LIVE in an exotic vacation destination! More good news: We’ve done all your planning for you. Pick a theme to guide your adventures, or mix and match for a break that has a little bit of everything!

T

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

WATER WATER EVERYWHERE

TIME TRAVEL THROUGH TAMPA BAY

Grab your binoculars and camera and take off on a 30-minute guided Serengeti Safari Tour at Busch Gardens, and linger awhile to see more than 300 species from around the world. At the Florida Aquarium, you can hang out backstage with African penguins, see a hissing cockroach from Madagascar and marvel at the “dragons down under” in the seahorse exhibit. Hang out with a celeb when you visit Winter, star of the “Dolphin Tale” movies, at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Get nose-tohorn with a rhino or pose with a koala at ZooTampa at Lowry Park, and stay for a whirl on the carousel. You have until April 15 to see some of our native animal buddies at the Tampa Electric’s Manatee Viewing Center, where hundreds of the gentle creatures gather to enjoy the warm waters from November to April.

By March, the cool sweater weather of January will be a distant memory and we’ll have broken out the swimsuits and sunscreen, ready to hit the water. A whole week off from school is an ideal excuse to explore the best water venues in town, from the 30 acres of water rides at Adventure Islands to the 10 splash pads operated by the Tampa Parks and Recreation Department. Check out tampagov.net/parks-andrecreation/activitiesrecreation/aquatics/ splash-pads for hours of operation and addresses. The Florida Aquarium and ZooTampa at Lowry Park have extensive water play areas also. Spring is also the perfect time to make a final decision on which perfect stretch of golden sand can be deemed your family’s favorite beach—have each member of the family pick one to try!

Put on your comfy shoes and book a 90-minute Ybor City Historic Walking Tour to learn about Tampa’s Cuban past. Stop by Ybor City Museum to learn about the lives of the Italian and Cuban immigrants who moved here to work at the cigar factories. For a peek into the lives of the rich and famous who visited Tampa Bay, spend an hour or two at the Henry B. Plant Museum, the Victorian resort hotel that is now part of the University of Tampa. At the 21-acre living history Pinellas County Heritage Village, visit a school your pioneer ancestor could have attended, and watch sugar cane being pressed into syrup. Browse three floors of historical exhibits at the Tampa Bay History Center, but make time for the Treasure Seekers exhibit, where you can learn all about pirates, conquistadores and shipwrecks.

A SPRINGTIME FEAST If you have a little foodie on your hands, spring break is the perfect time for leisurely food exploration. Find your family’s favorite version of the iconic Tampa “mixto”—will the delicious bread of La Segunda’s Cuban win out over the honeyed one at West Tampa Sandwich Shop? If you sample the Cuban at Brocato’s, maybe your kids will want to try out another Tampa staple, the deviled crab. Parkesdale Market is a perfect spot for a midmorning sugar rush with their World Famous Strawberry Shortcake—grab a loaf or two of delicious strawberry bread to go. For a fancy good time, dress the kids up and take them to Tampa’s oldest restaurant, Columbia, and ask for a room inside so you can watch a flamenco show while you enjoy your 1905 salad. Celebrate the Year of the Pig with dim sum at Chinese staple Yummy House with your adventurous eater, and close things out with a night at Armature Works or Sparkman Wharf, stressfree, indoor/outdoor venues where you’ll find something for everyone’s tastes.

10 WAYS TO ENJOY THE WEEK

GLOBETROTTING WITHOUT A PASSPORT At the Glazer Children’s Museum World Café, your little ones can participate in a West African drumming circle or learn about Japanese traditions in a pagoda. For an authentic Thai experience on the banks of the Palm River, spend Sunday morning at Wat Mongkolratanaram, a complex that includes a gorgeous temple, garden sculptures and a popular farmer’s market-style spread of food stalls. Tarpon Springs in Pinellas County has the largest concentration of Greeks in the United States, so what better place to head to for Greek food, music and dance, as well as an interesting look into the sponge diving industry that the Greek immigrants came here for. Fowler Avenue in Temple Terrace is home to several outposts of Indian culture—sniff out exotic spices and interesting snacks at House of Spices and try the biriyani at Pastries ‘n’ Chaat.

[ STAFF PICK ] Bok Tower Gardens has an amazing interactive children's garden. Bring quarters to feed the koi.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Soak up that Vitamin D before things get too hot and steamy. You have a couple of weeks left to take the Hillsborough County’s 2019 Hiking Spree challenge and complete 8 trails for a reward. At hillsboroughcounty. org/residents/recreation-andculture/recreation/hiking-spree, you can get more information as well as a detailed listing of area trails with distances and difficulty levels. You can also check out sections of the Pinellas Trail to explore parts of St Pete from a bicycle. For a rush of adrenaline, check out the 36-foot-high MOSI Ropes Course, or test your family’s bravery at TreeHoppers Aerial Adventure Park or Empower Adventures Tampa Bay. For an active downtown morning, check out Urban Kai and explore downtown Tampa from a stand up paddleboard.

AWAKEN THE ARTIST WITHIN

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME

A week off from school and scheduled activities is the perfect opportunity to let kids explore their creative sides. They can peek into the mind of a genius at the Dali Museum in St Pete, or for more traditional fare, drive a few minutes downtown to the Museum of Fine Arts—exhibitions on display in March include everything from Van Gogh to Broadway. The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art and Chihuly Collection provide other unique and beautiful feasts for the eyes. The Tampa Museum of Art and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts are not only full of amazing creativity, they are also close to Curtis Hixon Park, where kids can blow off some steam after being good indoors all day long.

It’s a century-old tradition, and for baseball fans, one of the biggest perks of living in Tampa Bay. February and March is when Florida hosts 15 major league teams for their annual spring training. This means we can go see our favorite teams form up north play right around the corner from us! Whether it’s the New York Yankees at the George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, or the Philadelphia Phillies at Spectrum Field in Clearwater, or the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin Stadium, you can find a game to take your little enthusiasts to so they can taste the greatest American tradition! Visit floridagrapefruitleague. com to get more information, a daily schedule of games and buy tickets. [ STAFF PICK ] Catch a spring training game in Tampa Bay with the kids

A BLOOMING GOOD BREAK

INDOOR PLAY

We Floridians know that the wilting heat of summer is just around the corner, so spring is the perfect time for budding horticulturists to enjoy some of our stunning tropical gardens. Check out rare orchids and carnivorous plants at the University of South Florida’s Botanical Gardens 16 acres of research landscapes, and stop by the plant store to carry a little pot of inspiration home. The Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo offers free entry to its several demonstration gardens, while at the 100-year-old Sunken Gardens in St Pete, your little ones will be awed by waterfalls and a butterfly encounter. Drive an hour out to Bok Tower Gardens, and you’ll be rewarded by a stunning hilltop estate designed by Frank Olmsted Jr. (whose father designed Central Park), as well as by a concert at the 205-foot singing tower carillon.

So what if it rains all week? Being stuck indoors with whiny little ones desperate to burn off energy is no fun, but Tampa has plenty of bad-weather play options as well. With three museums dedicated to children—MOSI, Glazer Children’s Museum and Great Explorations—our kids can visit the international space station, “work” as a vet for a day, experience being a TV reporter and build forts. If it’s purely physical fun you’re after, check out The Airosphere in Tampa, Altitude Trampoline Park Tampa or Sky Zone Trampoline Park, all a great choice for kids who want to burn off some of that energy by jumping. Start a game of dodgeball with your kids on one of those trampolines and you may find yourself burning off some calories as well! If you have slightly older ones looking to spend a more cerebral hour or two, see if they can handle the fast pace of an escape room, where you can create a team and see if you can solve clues to stop deranged scientists or art thieves, and break out of a “locked” room in an hour or less!

[ STAFF PICK ] The Airosphere jump park will really get all their energy out!
