Dear Mom, I remember how you were teaching me to swim and you kept secretly backing up. The first day of school that you wiped my tears and nudged me into my classroom-and hid around the corner to make sure I was okay (I knew you were there.). There was the day after a break up you insisted that I go to school. I recall the time you steadfastly refused to bring me my lunch after I had forgotten it for the fourth time. I laugh as I remember the week I wanted to quit track and you insisted that I finish the season. That Spring when I was ready to ditch my dance date for “Mr. It” and you wouldn’t let me. The times I wanted to stay out just as late as some others and you said no. I remember that my rather small clothing budget didn’t allow for $60 t-shirts.

Photography by: Bob Thompson Hair and Makeup: Horacio Espinosa and Estrella Gonzalez of Asonipse Spa & Salon.

I laugh as I recall the times you placed a stuffed crab in our pants-and your own- when we were grumpy. The times you said “I am sorry” when you lost your temper. I can still see the steps you made us sit on while holding hands and saying, “Sisters forever. Sisters forever. Sisters forever. “after a fight. You placed the computer in the kitchen, asked all those never ending questions about my friends and insisted on taking down the information of those driving me. Making me leave notes about where I was going, when I would be home and who I was with. Making me invite Suzy over when no one else liked her. There was the punishment for arriving two minutes after curfew. There were the many thank you notes you insisted that I write. We were constantly reminded of the yes ma’ms and no sirs to adults all while looking them in the eye when speaking. You seemed to know just when I was hesitating to tell the truth and you would assure me that telling the truth is often less painful in the end than telling a lie. Making me apologize to the neighbor for picking all of her flowers and insisting on restitution-raking her entire yard. Making me cut blades of grass in the heat with scissors when you knew I had a hangover.

Girls Escape

Grab your mom or some girlfriends and head to Naples for a weekend of great food, shopping, art and spa treatments

N

BY SANDY PARRISH

eed a getaway weekend with the girls? You deserve it and you can’t find more fun in the sun than wandering down beautiful Fifth Avenue in downtown Naples. It’s only a couple of hours to drive from the Tampa Bay area, so gather up a gaggle of girlfriends, or your mom, and head out for a weekend away! Visit the beautiful Mediterranean inspired Inn on Fifth, a luxurious boutique inn whose doors open onto the bustling main street of Old Naples. Nestled into a quaint and charming avenue known as Florida’s Rodeo Drive, the street is lined with upscale shops, art galleries and fine restaurants. The Inn’s prime location allows you to surrender your car keys to the valet and forget about driving again until checkout time. Once a prominent Fifth Avenue Bank Building, the Inn was renovated into a boutique hotel in 1998. Designed in the spirit of popular 1920’s Palm Beach architect Addison Mizener, the Inn’s Mediterranean archways are a delight to the senses. Many of the elegantly appointed rooms offer a terrace, outfitted with comfortable rattan rocking chairs, so when it’s time for a shopping break, you can kick back with a glass of wine and get a bird’s eye view of Fifth Avenue from your balcony. For you fitness buffs, the hotel offers a state of the art fitness center along with a beautiful pool and waterfall Jacuzzi located on the 2nd floor deck. The Inn offers just 87 rooms and suites, making your stay feel much more intimate and personal than the usual large chain experience. Now for the best part, The Spa on Fifth is located on the third floor of the hotel. This day spa offers a tranquil Asian feel with babbling water fountains, grass cloth lined walls and delicate bamboo beaded curtains. With subtle lighting and soft décor, your relaxation experience begins the moment you enter the spa. Each treatment room is luxuriously decorated, creating a comfortable space in which to relax and renew. They offer dozens of treatment options, but I would highly recommend the Restore Package- the sublime combination of a 90 minute therapeutic massage and a 90 minute facial. Trust me. This is a very good way to spend 3 hours of your precious vacation time.

To get started, ask for a glass of wine and go relax in the steam room for a few minutes to warm up your muscles before your treatments. Dolores Kastler, LMT, gives a wonderful therapeutic massage which can be adjusted to a soft or firm touch, depending on your personal preference. The treatment consists of an hour and half massage using warm lavender oil, with exquisite attention to every sore and tired muscle you may have. I have never nodded off during a massage, and I did just that a few times during this one. By the way, this is the highest possible compliment I could pay Dolores. Just when you think it can’t get any better, your body is draped with hot steaming towels - an incredible sensation. Karla Bradis LMT, Esthetician, and CRT Specialist, provided the incredible Seaweed facial treatments. Each facial comes with a custom assessment of your skin’s condition, gentle cleansing, steaming and extractions, a custom mask, herbal oil massage, vitamin C and E serum and oxygen treatment all designed specifically for your particular skin type. All of the products used are derived from the Dead Sea mineral bed that has documented health benefits dating back for centuries. Karla also includes a CRT (Cranial Release Technique) in her treatments. This incredible stretch delivers an advanced cranial unwinding to eliminate stress and restore the nervous and skeletal systems. After being massaged, buffed and pampered for what seemed like days, Karla performed a gentle hand and foot reflexology massage to top off a perfect afternoon spent at the spa. Now that you are perfectly relaxed, it’s time to see the sights. Since the Inn is located just a few blocks from the best beaches in Naples, you can take a leisurely stroll towards the beach, passing another wonderful shopping and restaurant mecca on 3rd Street South. This quaint area is also loaded with shops, galleries and more fine restaurants. Check out the amazing windmill artwork across the street from the shops. You will be transfixed watching the wind create the illusion of blooming flowers and kaleidoscopes.

Before heading down to the beach, it’s worth a detour for lunch at Tommy Bahama’s Restaurant on 3rd Street to try the Sea Scallop Sliders and enjoy some live music. In a nutshell, this appetizer consists of two grilled jumbo sea scallops nestled inside miniature buns, and topped with asian slaw, roma tomatoes, fresh basil, chipolte aioli and crispy tobacco onions. Incredible. Another short walk and you are at the beach. Luckily, since we are pretty spoiled by our own Gulf beaches and their pristine confectionery sugar sand, Naples beaches do not disappoint, being every bit as beautiful as our own. Now for the Naples nightlife. If you are a theater buff, you’ll be happy to find that the Inn is located adjacent to the beautiful Sugden Community Theater, home to the Naples tbparenting.com

Players. The facility is impressive and the production of Cabaret was excellent. The performers and sets were incredible. Sugden has a gorgeous courtyard entrance with huge Oaks wrapped with thousands of tiny white lights making it a very magical place in the evening. There are many incredible restaurants on Fifth Avenue, so I will only highlight a few of the best. Located adjacent to the hotel lobby, McCabe’s Irish Pub & Grill serves an excellent seared tuna aptly named Tuna on 5th. Prepared in an orange glaze sauce with oven roasted potatoes and a mix of garden vegetables, it was excellent. Don’t miss the Molten Chocolate Cake for Dessert. As the name implies, lots of hot fudge in the center. Think chocolate lava. Vergina, a fine dining Italian restaurant is located across the street from the Inn. This establishment has a beautiful old world elegance and offers al fresco seating, as well as indoor dining that still incorporates the open air feel and flavor of a beautiful Naples evening. Dramatic bronze columns and soft lighting complete the warm ambience. They serve a spectacular dish called Cavatelli Aragosta, which is simply the most amazing lobster treat ever created. Served over pasta, it is overflowing with large pieces of fresh lobster claw, sautéed with tiny asparagus tips and sun dried tomatoes in a white truffle butter sauce. Whatever you do, do not miss this. For dessert, try their cheesecake. It’s heavenly. For after dinner entertainment, Vergina also has a great little bar and dance floor nestled into the back of the restaurant. This place was hopping every night with a fantastic retro band playing the best R&B hits of the 70’s. They cover songs that you never hear from a live band- everything from Chaka Khan to the Temptations. The Bar at Vergina seemed to be “the” happening place for Naples nightlife. Another spot to check out is Kilwin’s Chocolate Shoppe, a few blocks down from the Inn. As you walk through the front door, the intoxicating scent of sugar, butter and chocolate could drop any candy lover to their knees. Try the Nutcracker Sweets, a fantastic caramel popcorn treat. Think Cracker Jacks--- on steroids. From one end to the other, Fifth Avenue offers countless high end fashion boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, restaurants and bars just ripe for exploring and everything is just steps from the hotel. All in all, Old Naples has enough to give you and your girlfriends all the pampering, shopping, and dining you need for a wonderful weekend away from it all!

running away

BY CHRISTIE ARDOLINO

reconnecting with oneself in a single weekend

I

n a world where we have triple booked our schedules because we know everyone else has and cancellations are inevitable, god forbid we should have uncommitted, non-productive time as we race through our lives, it is easy to see how time flies by. Add children and family to the mix and it is obvious how we end up feeling ragged and tired and confused about where time and life has gone. Recently, I decided to run away from home! I was tired, I was what I can only describe as “lost” in my world filled with rules and deadlines and commitments, oh my. I knew where I was supposed to be at what time for how long and with whom, BUT I had no idea why. I had all these rules in place to more easily sift through people, things, and decisions, BUT I cannot remember why I made the rules. I was a fully indoctrinated competitor in the rat race we accept as “life”! Finally, I paused and asked myself: “Why am I doing this? Why does everything seem so hard? Am I happy?” I could not answer any of these questions, so in a self preserving ADULT way, I ran away from home. I have subsequently convinced most of my friends to do the same. It is my belief that if people did this more often, we would have significantly fewer divorces and conflicts and job changes and depression. It is easier to just blame and extricate people and jobs rather than take time to be “selfish”! I contest, it is not selfish BUT responsible for your own stuff and happiness!

Christie swimming with Stormy

A child would run away and leave everything behind and have no responsibility. I, however, made sure that everyone had what they needed to get by without me and made sure I asked for time away from work. I did not simply disappear. After I made the decision to “run away”, I set aside the time by making provisions for my family, figuring out how much time and money I could afford to spend, and most importantly identifying a destination that would help me to relax. I needed to choose a place that would help me feel like I did before I was this rule making and following rat racer. Then I informed my friends and family where I would be and how to reach me, but asked that they not contact me unless it was an emergency. Then I ran away! For me, in nature is where my soul is most at ease. I knew I wanted to be near the water and if possible to see the sunrise and sunset, living in Florida that option is possible. I chose Islamorada in the Florida Keys. I stayed at the Chesapeake Resort for three days. I made arrangements to stay at a resort even though it was pricier because as a woman traveling alone I felt that I would be safer there. I knew I wanted to float on the water somewhere and just be Christie without all of my “supposed to’s”. While I was driving to the Keys I had the radio blaring and was singing my heart out. I already felt 50 pounds lighter because I knew I was taking care of myself. When I passed a sign advertising “Swim with the Dolphins” I thought, “Hmmm, I might enjoy tbparenting.com

that”. So I pulled over and signed up. The swim was scheduled for the next 2 mornings. I travelled on to my hotel and settled in. Immediately went to the waters edge to watch the sunset. As it did I felt like I would cry, and I did. It had been such a long time since I had actually seen the sunset, really took the time to focus on that and nothing else. I walked along the beach and felt the sand between my toes and the water cover my feet, and the breeze tossing my hair about. I think I walked on the beach for about an hour and then returned to my room. I showered and treated myself to a shi-shi meal, which is not easy to do in the Keys on account of the ultra laid back atmosphere. It was a fusion restaurant called Ziggy and Mad Dogs. The food was scrumptious and I actually enjoyed the time alone, savoring the food that I did not have to prepare. That night I slept with the windows open so that I could hear the waves crashing. I slept amazingly well. I awoke rested very early the next morning so that I could watch the sunrise. Mother nature put on a spectacular show for me and the sheer beauty and quietness of it all moved me. I went back to the room and got dressed for my date with the seal, Mimi and Stormy, the dolphin. As I put on my wet suit I realized I was the only one who was there by themselves. Before you feel sorry for me let me impart a valuable life lesson. For some unknown reason a woman traveling alone is treated like a goddess. It could be out of pity, or amazement, or “wow, I wish I could do that”. Whatever the reason, on this day it afforded me much joy. The

12

result of my aloneness was that the trainers had decided to allow me the entire time to swim with Mimi, alone (normally split into 4 people). All I can say is Aaaaaaahhhhh, and three cheers for the unconditional love of animals, and hooray for the peace of floating! I felt as though I floated right on through the rest of that day and into the next when I swam with Stormy. What I did do was reconnect with myself, throw out the rule book, and the time restraints and vowed to feel buoyant in all things. I did write a lot and let out a lot of stress, pain, and anxiety on paper that I could then let go. I decided not to have rules that I could not define why they were in place, and that that definition was a rational and logical one. To not do anything that did not serve me and my family’s greater good. And to never do anything that I believed in my heart was wrong. Now I move more slowly through life, I spend my free time with those people that I cherish. At work, school for me, I do the absolute best that I can, and then I leave it there so that I have real time for me and my family. I do occasionally spend time just for me because I believe I am of no use to anyone if I am not happy and at peace. Since my return, life has been much more enjoyable. I make a point to notice the sunsets and really revel in their beauty. There exist countless things, feelings, moments that can snap us out of the everyday ruts we find ourselves in, we just need to remember to notice them and then embrace them.

are we having fun yet hot birthday savings tips

R

BY C.G. BARRET

ecently my younger daughter turned the ripe old age of one. Wanting her special day to be memorable but not wanting to take out a second mortgage, I scoured the Internet for children’s birthday party planning tips. Being the magnanimous type, I’ve cobbled together the wisest advice just for you. Since that wisdom amounted to a single sentence (“At age one, a child doesn’t fully understand the concept of Birthday Party.”), I’ll also throw in my own hot birthday savings tips – for free. In true party planning, the first real question everyone tackles is the number of guests to invite. The established rule of thumb is to add two to your child’s upcoming age and invite that number.

Hot Birthday Savings Tip Number 1:

For big savings on guests, home school your children. They will have very few friends other than that nice lady in the mail jeep. If you are forced for reasons of personal laziness to send your child to real schools and he has undermined you by actually meeting other people, remind him that for each friend he invites, he’s psychologically scarring two to three others he’s overlooked. Rest assured, however, that this is simply not true. The uninvited kids won’t notice. It’s their mothers who won’t ever talk to you again. When you are shopping for your child’s party, most financial planners advise you to leave the credit cards at home and bring only the cash you wish to spend in a large suitcase.

Tip Number 2:

If you bring only Monopoly money and Gasparilla beads, you’ll be less likely to make impulsive purchases. All parties today must be unified with a single theme. The purchase of themed “Star Wars” or “Strawberry Shortcake” paper plates, paper cups, paper napkins and paper tablecloths can be jarringly expensive, however. Hot Birthday Savings

Tip Number 3:

To trim costs, six months before the party, work hard to convince your child that the theme of his or her party should be “White Paper.” Film a brief home video featuring a heroic white paper napkin to convince them of this fine idea. If you have a son, have the napkin do Kung-Fu moves; if you have a daughter, call it a Princess Napkin. The child should view this video once a day for four months. During this

time, also take great pains to pick up plain pieces of white paper in their presence while exclaiming, “This is so cool!” Even your gifted child will enthusiastically embrace the White Paper Party. If you decide you cannot live without a real party theme, it is essential that you select one that will make your child’s party the talk of the town and cause all the other mothers to secretly resent you. This does not have to be an expensive or difficult undertaking. It simply requires some creativity. Bag the Disney princesses and the Spiderman themes. Instead, consider a prison or a potty theme. Army Boot Camp is a cute and perfect idea for the raging, lunatic child. If your child just insists on having a TV or movie theme, why not consider “CSI Miami” or “Saw XIV”? Every child’s party I’ve recently attended has featured a piñata beating contest. This is quite a change from my childhood, when we made piñatas in arts and crafts and then simply stared at them. Piñatas, however, are now widely available for sale at your local pre-fabricated concrete factory. While convenient, they’re indestructible. By the time the children at the party are on the fourth round of swings, all the adults are thinking, “Oh, for gahwdsakes, stab it with a knife!” Unfortunately, this thought does not occur to the enthusiastic birthday dad until he gets whacked in a tender area.

Tip Number 4:

Buy a piñata but don’t bother filling it. After allowing all the kids three or four whacks, loudly announce, “Well, you didn’t break it, so you get nothing. Too bad! Now go sit over there and Jacob’s great grandmother will pretend she’s an accomplished magician.” Then return the piñata to the store or stuff it in the attic crawlspace until next year. Another option (and a great party stress reliever) is to string up the loudest and pushiest child at the party and encourage everyone to give him a couple of good whacks. The other parents will love you for it. One of the biggest costs associated with parties is food. Parents spend hundreds of dollars on chips and pizza. Is all this really necessary? After all, the focus should be on your child opening her gifts, not on the guests’ unreasonable expectations.

Tip Number 5:

Another increasingly expensive birthday albatross is party bags. For those who have not

recently attended a child’s party, these favors consist of decorated plastic bags filled with choking hazards. An intense party bag competition has recently sprung up among mothers everywhere. Some are now including things like pre-paid college plans and ponies in them. Since all loot bags really hold only sugar and plastic, just place a large scoopful of bulk sugar in a Ziploc bag and throw in a twirly straw. And if you give into party convention and decide to serve cake?

Final Hot Birthday Savings Tip: Let’s get real. Kids don’t eat the cake part. Simply frost a large sponge, cut it up and serve it. After the kids lick off the icing, clean up will be convenient and handy! C.G. Barrett is a freelance writer and workat-home dad. For more of his insanity, check out writercgbarrett.blogspot.com.

Did you know that asthma is the number one cause of children missing school? Do you have questions about your child’s asthma but are not sure where to go for the answers? There is a new local organization that can help - the Tampa Bay Asthma Coalition. TBAC is a group of dedicated professionals that have joined together to provide the community with FREE resources for those affected with asthma. Various organizations participate in asthma awareness. In order to simplify the process of who-does-what, TBAC was formed. TBAC is funded through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Coalition members include the University of South Florida, the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County, the American Lung Association, Hillsborough County Health Department, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, Take Charge Lifestyle Management, Suncoast Pediatric Asthma Coalition, Steps to a Healthier Hillsborough and Hillsborough Community College. It is through this collaborative effort that TBAC was able to assist a family in their struggle of placing an air purifier in their asthmatic child’s classroom. This was the first time the team was called into play as a group of experts. To summarize the joint effort, TBAC received a call from the parents of an asthmatic child who attends a Hillsborough County middle school. The mother was asking for help and support from the TBAC team with a school situation involving her child having increased asthma episodes since the beginning of the school year. The TBAC team met with the parent and made recommendations for support.

Activities include swimming, face-painting, games, bounce houses and more. The event is FREE and open to all. For more information, contact Maggie Beaumont at MBeaumont@tampaymca. org

The parents met with the school nurse, principal and school liaison to address the issue. TBAC made recommendations on an air purifier and the parents decided on a model that they themselves would supply the school for their child’s classroom. After negotiations between the family, school and TBAC, the child was allowed to place an air purifier in his classroom. The child had already been placed in another school during the negotiation process; however, this was the first time an air purifier was able to be placed in a single classroom in Hillsborough County. If you or a person you know has been diagnosed with asthma, please contact the Tampa Bay Asthma Coalition at 813.627.2600, ext. 1008 or tbac@epchc.org. One call may be all you need to start breathing healthier.

Guidelines For Bounce House Rentals Many parents are unaware of the danger their children may be in when playing in some inflatable structures. It is unfortunate, but the state of Florida is one of the only States that does not regulate or require inspection of inflatable play structures. This means that there is no one overseeing the companies who rent these units, nor is there any standard for safety, sanitation or a requirement for liability insurance. Amazinflates® of Tampa offers these guidelines when renting a bounce house: 1. Having proper supervision. Having a trained attendant on site is a MUST. Running an interactive inflatable without an operator is akin to having a pool full of kids and no lifeguard/supervision. 2. Insurance. Because liability insurance for inflatables can be pricey, many companies are operating without any form of insurance. The lack of insurance allows these companies to offer low rates on their rentals. However, these companies are sacrificing children’s safety for price. This also means that if there is an injury to your child, you may not receive any compensation even if the injury was caused by the company’s negligence. Many home insurance policies do not cover accidents in inflatables. If the event is at a park the rental company must have either the city or county as an additional insured. 3. Operation procedures. The delivery staff should provide verbal and written instructions to parents explaining proper operating, safety and emergency procedures. The staff that delivers the equipment should be knowledgeable of the unit and be able to answer any questions a parent may have about the use of the inflatable. 4. Inspection and maintenance. The inflatable should be cleaned and sanitized before and after each rental by the rental company. Clean and sanitized inflatables help protect your children from harmful viruses and bacteria and ensure an enjoyable play environment. 5. Securing the inflatables. The inflatable must be properly secured by the rental company with a stake or weight at each and every anchoring point to prevent the unit from tipping over with high winds. Unit must not be used with high wind speeds over 25 MPH. Improper weighting and staking is one of the most common causes of inflatable accidents. Why? It is labor and time intensive. Just remember, without it your inflatable amusement may end up more of a hot air balloon than a play structure. 6. Followed standards. It is important that the rental company follows the standards for proper use and operation of inflatable amusement devices. (ASTM) American Society for Testing and Material has specific rules and regulations for the proper use and operation of inflatable amusement devices. Organizations like (NAARSO) National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials help enforce these rules.

letter for mom all the gratitude you hope for from your children

S

BY LISA BLACK

everal years ago, I sat with the Kleenex clutched in my hand and tears streaming down my cheeks as a pastor’s wife read aloud a letter she had received from her daughter on Mother’s Day. The daughter, now away at college, expressed that she now understood. She now understood and appreciated the endless rules, boundaries, adventures, questions, spankings, support and the importance of her Mom just being there. I have long forgotten the exact wording of this letter, but I have never forgotten the emotional impact of the letter on me and the other Moms that day. I dream of receiving a hand written letter like that someday from my daughters on Mother’s Day. The accolades aren’t important. The gratitude is secondary. It is the understanding that I most seek.

riding safely The day you buy your child his first bicycle is sure to be a milestone in your life. But it’s important to remember that bicycles are more than just a toy; they are associated with more childhood injuries than any consumer product except the automobile. In 2004, nearly 275,000 children were treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries, and 132 children ages 14 and under died as a result of a bike-related crash. You can greatly reduce your children’s risk of injury and death simply by setting some limits. A single rule – wear a helmet or don’t ride – can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent. Kids, especially 11- to 14-year-olds, are sometimes reluctant to wear helmets. They may insist they’re good riders who don’t need helmets anymore, complain that helmets are uncomfortable, or point out that none of their friends wear them. Your child may be especially mature for her age; he may be a particularly skilled rider; or it just might feel easier to give in. But experts at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital urge you to resist that temptation. Requiring your children to wear a helmet every time, everywhere they go, is the best thing you can do to protect them. If your child rides a bike, then he probably also enjoys skateboards, scooters or in-line skates. Make sure that whenever he “wheels” around, he’s wearing the right gear.

TIPS

1. Don’t negotiate. It’s estimated that 75 percent of bicycle-related deaths among children could be prevented with a bicycle helmet. 2. Correct fit is essential. Do the “Eyes, Ears and Mouth” check: » EYES check: Position the helmet on your head. Look up and you should see the bottom rim of the helmet (one to two fingers above the eyebrows). » EARS check: Make sure the straps of the helmet form a “V” under your ears when buckled. The strap should be snug but comfortable. » MOUTH check: Now open your mouth as wide as you can! Do you feel the helmet hug your head? If not, tighten those straps! 3. If your child is reluctant to wear her helmet, try letting her choose her own. Helmets come in many colors and styles – allowing children to choose a helmet that’s “cool” may make them less likely to take it off when you’re not around. 4. Talk to other parents and encourage them to have their kids wear helmets. Let your children see that you wear a helmet, too. Children are more likely to wear helmets when riding with others who wear them. tbparenting.com

His deteriorating status led to a heart transplant, which was performed at All Children’s Hospital on March 2nd. Anthony has been Ongoing: Saturdays & Sundays, 1pm - 4pm recovering at the hospital ever since. Anthony’s March 2nd surgery was the 100th heart transplant performed at All Children’s Hospital. The program’s first heart transplant took place on June 19, 1995. That recipient, Hunter Ratcliffe of Winter Haven, FL, is now a healthy 12-year old who still visits All Children’s transplant clinic for check-ups three times a year. Patients as young as five days old have received heart transplants at All Children’s Hospital. Of the 100 patients transplanted, 72 have survived to date. “We are proud to have helped children like Anthony through our heart transplant program, “ noted All Children’s President & CEO Gary Carnes. “All Children’s Hospital is the only Florida facility with the highly specialized care and facilities required to perform these life-saving procedures on patients as small as newborns. In this time of increasing financial pressure from projected state and federal budget cuts, Anthony’s story reminds us of the need to safeguard those that provide care for the most fragile among us.” Anthony’s medical future is looking much brighter with his new, healthy heart. But the four-year old still needs a permanent home. Currently in medical foster care, Anthony will be eligible for adoption once his medical condition stabilizes.
