Roy Paz, local police officer and speed skating coach, with his daughters Anna (left) and Samantha (right).
As a father and coach, I trust St. Joseph's Children's Hospital
for the best emergency care. When my daughters suffered serious injuries while speed skating, I made sure they were both treated at the Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Center at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. The nurses and doctors were confident and reassuring, putting my family at ease. Thanks to them, both girls will be skating circles around me for years to come. For that, I’m very grateful.

FROM THE EDITOR
It’s the four words every mother promises she’ll never say to her kids, but inevitably it happens. One day your son or daughter responds “why” to your every request. Then in the exact tone your mother would say it to you in you’d say, “Because I said so.” And with that you’ve officially become your mother and every mother.
David E. Estevez Executive Assistant Kimberley Brown Smith Associate Editor
May 9 is the day to celebrate all things mom – sideline cheerleader, skinned-knee kisser, activity planner, top chef, etc. Yes, it’s Mother’s Day. And for all you moms, now would be the time to mark your calendars. You may be asking, “Why should I mark my calendar? I’m not going to be giving myself a gift.” And I say, “Why not?” Mother’s Day is the one day a year when there should be no guilt involved in taking time for yourself and enjoying a little TLC. We’ve got some great ideas on page 54 for gifts you can request from loved ones and on page 70 you can check out some places to go and things to do on your special day.

We’re also celebrating our third birthday this month and we’d like to thank all the moms, dads, grandparents, caregivers, etc. who have fueled our success. As a gift, we’ve updated our look and we hope you like it.

Moms often take a lot of time making sure everyone else is OK and too little time making sure they’re OK. This year, remember you’re more than a mom and you have to be your best to give your best. And you have to do this because I said so.

get out and play Fun in
...................................... By Angela Ardolino
the sun means protecting your skin, too
so consult your doctor if you have concerns. For children, there are a few more factors to consider.
I
t’s a beautiful time of year, especially in Florida. Spring is wonderful. It’s a time when you can get out and enjoy the outdoors before the sticky, hot summer arrives.
Babies’ skin is immature and their immobility makes their skin especially sensitive to the sun. Older children are at risk for damage because 75 percent of a child’s time is spent in the sun and the water, making sunscreen a necessity.
But while you’re basking in the sun, there are some measures we all should take to protect our skin from the elements. Dr. Elizabeth K. Hale, clinical associate professor of dermatology at the New York University School of Medicine, says now is a great opportunity to get in the habit of using daily sun protection. To help remember to apply sunscreen, she recommends keeping a bottle in your medicine cabinet next to your toothbrush. Throw another bottle in your bag with your athletic gear, so applying before workouts becomes as routine as tying your shoelaces. You also should choose a sunscreen that is durable enough to work as hard as you do. Try scheduling your outdoor workout during the early morning to avoid the day’s most powerful UV rays and get a healthy start to your day. Don’t forget to protect your eyes with sunglasses, she says. For the best protection, your sunglasses should block out 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Choose wrap-around frames, which stay on during active exercise.
When choosing a sunscreen, keep in mind that children have skin that is especially sensitive to chemical allergens, too. Test the sunscreen by applying a small amount on the inside of your child’s wrist the day before you plan to use it. If an irritation or rash develops, try another product. Ask your child’s doctor to suggest one.
schools see sunscreen as a medicine, and require written permission to use it or require that the school nurse apply it. Other schools ban hats and sunglasses on campus. Here are a few questions to ask. What is the policy on sun safety? Is there shade on the playground? Are outdoor activities scheduled to avoid the midday sun? And just because your kids are teenagers doesn’t mean you can ignore their outdoor activities. It’s probably even more important to make sure they’re being safe. Tanning through sunbathing, tanning salons or self-tanning products is popular among teens. These activities carry health consequences. Overexposure to the sun increases the risk of skin cancer. The tan obtained at a salon also can damage the skin. In fact, the UV radiation in tanning parlors can be as much as 15 times that of the sun. The chemicals in self-tanning products have not been tested for safety; the major self-tanning chemical, dihydroxyacetone, is not approved by FDA for use in cosmetics around the eyes. It’s time to get out and play. Wearing sunscreen needs to be a daily habit to ensure you’ll have a lifetime of basking in the sun.
Parents also should inquire about how their child’s school handles sun safety. Sometimes school policies interfere with sun safety. Many
Reapply sunscreen often when enjoying the outdoors and check your skin for spots, lesions and changes regularly. Be extra careful if you have freckles, moles, take certain medications (such as some antibiotics), or have a family history of skin cancer. Early detection is best,

It’s My
Party
and I’ll chill if I want to
................................
Josette Edouard So, you’ve had it with Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jasmine and Belle. Then in a desperate attempt at an original party theme, you moved on to Strawberry Short Cake, Dora the Explorer, and of course, SpongeBob. Well, hate to break it to you, but it has been done a million times. Toss out the party hats, the pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey and those raggedy streamers you pulled out of that shoebox you so casually labeled “Party Stuff.” Your prayers have been answered. Throwing a party for your kids’ doesn’t have to be a chore. Whether it’s a birthday party, summer party or the kids are at grandma’s party, you can do it all with style. And here’s the secret: a theme with touches of originality. So here are some ideas to give them a birthday they will never forget.
Top Chef: If your child loves to cook and can stand the heat, then this is the party for you. First, equip your guests with chef hats and aprons. Be sure to child-proof your kitchen to avoid any accidents. Assemble the right team; grandma, grandpa, aunts, uncles, or just blackmail that friend, whose incriminating picture you still have in your possession. Pick a few simple recipes such as homemade pizza, chicken kebobs, hogs in a blanket, nachos, etc. And you can’t forget dessert. Homemade ice cream cake, cupcakes and candies are all excellent choices. Visit www. childrenrecipes.com for great ideas. Separate your little chefs into two teams with at least two adult captains on each team and have an old fashioned cook off. If you’d like to model your party after the TV show, you can have a judging segment. And because part of a chef’s job is to clean up his mess, you’ll be thrilled to not be playing maid at the end. Party Like A Rock Star: This party will give your child and guests the opportunity to party like the rich and famous. A red carpet extravaganza, each child is to dress like their favorite celebrity. To make this a real hit you’ll need to set the scene. Recruit a team of paparazzi (family, friends, etc.), get or create a red carpet, have awesome music (a DJ would be great) and flashy lights (disco ball, strobe lights, fog machines). Because your child would be the guest of honor, set up a VIP section and rope it off. This party theme is superb for any child who loves to be in the spotlight. Princess and the Frog Ball: This is not your
typical Disney princess party. This party entails all of that awesome New Orleans’ culture that makes the movie so great. For this party your guests should dress in their best ballroom apparel. Wearing costumes specific to the movie would be an excellent way to set the scene. Fill your venue with Mardi Gras decorations and play zydeco music to get your little guests hoppin’. The food is what makes this party. Serve Cajun-style foods such as gumbo, jambalaya and red beans and rice. If New Orleans’ cooking is not your forte, call your nearest Popeyes restaurant. This party is not only fun and original but it’s a great way to expose your child to a new culture.
Camping Under the Stars: This is an overnight
adventure that you can hold in the backyard. All your guests will need is pajamas, a sleeping bag and an empty tummy. Set up tents. To keep the yard illuminated you can put up torch lights. This also is a great way to keep bugs and critters from entering the party zone. Use an outdoor fire pit because you can’t go camping without a campfire. Of course, s’mores should be on the menu but you also can serve chicken, hotdogs, hamburgers and kebobs. Ghost stories are a great way to end the night and a camping tradition. With teen parties the idea is to be the social event of the year. It has to be hot, flashy, big and something no other parent would do or has done.
A CP Spa Day: For those of you who are still scratching your heads on the “CP,” relax. CP means chill pill. This get-together is for the teen that just needs a break from their oh-so-stressful life (texting, screaming, slamming doors and updating your Twitter status is a full-time job.) Your teen and a couple of her friends can relax and unwind at any spa of your choice. Most spas have packages that may include massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and even hairstyling. The good thing about this spa party is that you don’t have to worry about cleaning up. If you play your cards right you may even be invited to come along. Glow-in the Dark Bash: This is a dance party for your fun-loving teen. A spin on the average house party everything is glow-in-the-dark. You just need a venue full of teens, glow sticks, glow bracelets, glow hats, etc. Also, LED lights and jewelry are great items that will pump this party up. Great music is definitely a must, so a professional DJ can be a huge addition. For this bash guests should dress in bright, funky clothing, big hair, and colorful jewelry and sneakers. Reality TV Party: This party is for the reality-
TV-obsessed teen. Now instead of watching it on TV, your teen and all his/her guests can film their very own The Hills. For this occasion, all you
need is a house, a video camera, lots of food, and even more drama. Your teen and his/her friends can create the drama, film it and party. Make sure you have a designated area for cast confessionals and commentaries. With graduation season nearly here, many of you are racking your brains to figure out the perfect way to show your graduate how proud you are. A graduation party is a great way to send them off into the world.
Gossip Girls Dinner Party: You don’t have to
live on the Upper East Side to plan a graduation bash that will have the school halls buzzing. Your guests will come dressed to impress in designer clothing worthy of the fashion blogs. The venue is important to set that nouveau riche atmosphere, so make sure it reeks of elegance and charm. Lots of bold patterns and metallic accents, anything goes in the Gossip Girl world so, don’t be afraid to mix and match. Your graduate will feel on top of the world during a mocktail hour followed by a formal dinner service.
Toga Party: A Greek-inspired party is perfect for
a graduation party. Guests should arrive dressed in Greek attire or looking like their favorite Greek god or goddess. Stick to an all white and gold color scheme and use lots of columns, urns, and statues. Toga. Toga. Toga. Now, it’s time for you to get planning. And don’t worry. You can take credit for the idea. I won’t tell.

hearts
“Hi, Mr. Peck. Do you think Atticus was the voice of reason?” My students had read and studied the novel. They had just seen the film. Now the moment had arrived. Through the miracle of modern teleconferencing, my middle school students were speaking with Gregory Peck. Yes, the world-famous actor Gregory Peck who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the righteous country lawyer Atticus Finch in the film version of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. He graciously agreed to the interview, but it soon became clear that he had gotten a bit more than he had bargained for. He now had to face provocative questions from a group known for its ability to challenge, engage and at once thoroughly frustrate unsuspecting adults intelligent eighth graders. Like any good novel, To Kill a Mockingbird is about many things at once. On the surface, it is a story about a man’s struggle against the forces of prejudice, ignorance and injustice in a small southern town in the 1930s. It also is very much a story about family, growth and learning. It’s a story made for school. To be sure, my student’s question showed his ability to analyze literature, but it also opened a window of opportunity that Peck instinctually took advantage of. “Yes, I believe he was the voice of reason. He was a man of intellect with a deep sense of fair play, a reasoning man. And yet, he was also an ordinary American - the best kind of ordinary American. A man with sympathy and compassion for the downtrodden and the people who don’t get an even shake in life. He was a man of integrity, resilience and character.” Mr. Peck was right. Atticus is everything the author and the actor
made him and more. He is the pebble dropped into the pond from which circles of ethical energy radiate throughout the landscape of the novel. He is a true American hero. He embodies the virtues families and schools ought to strive to instill in our children. School is most powerful when it nurtures the development of the whole child, when it works in partnership with families to help students develop in all areas. School should not concentrate solely on developing the ability to handle academic class work or perform well on standardized tests. The best schools provide environments that are broad, stimulating and safe, so students will have opportunities to grow socially, emotionally, physically and morally as well as intellectually. The best schools educate the heart as well as the head. Through the Gregory Peck teleconference my students had a rare opportunity to interact with an American icon. Though it was over a decade ago, it is likely that they still remember his words. I believe they always will remember the values they learned through our study of To Kill a Mockingbird and the many other experiences they had in school. I believe that because they were immersed in an environment in which values of the highest order permeated every experience, that they were able to absorb, understand and eventually exemplify the same character displayed by Atticus Finch in the ways he served his family and his community. To lead us through the 21st century, our children must be able to distinguish between right and wrong, to have both resilience and compassion for those less fortunate than they and to use their considerable intellects in service of fair play, integrity and high moral character and purpose. In short, we must make it routine for all students to have the opportunity to become “the best kind of ordinary Americans.” Mark Heller is head of school at Academy at the Lakes, a pre-K3 through 12th grade independent school that serves students and families in Hillsborough and Pasco counties. go green Going green has been the buzz term for awhile and many industries have begun to make strides in changing the products they offer and the way they do business in an attempt to be greener and more efficient. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry is no different. The industry has introduced higher efficiency systems that use a more eco-friendly and efficient refrigerant. While it’s wonderful that companies have taken the initiative to offer consumers a greener alternative, there are some basic and cost-effective ways you can cut energy costs and reduce your home’s carbon footprint.
Proper maintenance – Proper HVAC equipment maintenance is essential. Have a qualified technician service your HVAC system without fail every year before the start of the cooling season. Make sure your air filters are changed every month, and in general, ensure the unit is operating at its peak efficiency. Install a programmable thermostat – Energy Star
states that an average savings of $150 per year or more can be expected when you install a programmable thermostat. By automatically lowering the temperature when you are not home, (or raising the temperature in the case of air conditioning), equipment run times and carbon emissions are reduced. Plus, you save money.
Use ceiling fans – Ceiling fans should blow down during the cooling season and blow up during the heating season. Putting the fan on low
....................... By Rob Kress
speed blowing up helps to move warm air trapped near the ceiling down along the walls making the floor area warmer. In summer, moving air makes you feel cooler at a higher temperature setting.
Step outside of your comfort zone – Raising the temperature 1 degree will save up to 5 percent on your cooling bill.
Keep registers and grills clean and unobstructed – If
the system struggles to move the air properly, it has to run longer to satisfy the room temperature setting.
Use windows to your advantage – Keep shades or blinds closed during the heat of the day in summertime to reduce heat gain. In the winter, open the blinds/curtains to take advantage of the solar gain. Just make sure to close them at night. Spending some money upfront can boost long term monthly savings. With up to 55 percent of your home’s energy usage attributed to your HVAC equipment, it pays to update an outdated, inefficient system. The federal government is offering a $1,500 tax credit to homeowners who upgrade to a higher efficiency HVAC system by Dec. 31. This will help to ease the upfront cost of a new air conditioning unit. Do your homework, run the numbers and you will see what you can save by being green. The author, Rob Kress, is with IERNA’s Heating & Cooling. For more information on how you can make a difference on your carbon foot print, increase your comfort and decrease your utility costs, contact IERNA’s Heating & Cooling at www.iernaair.com or call 813-948-6355.

safety first Store at St.
F
......................
By Amy Gall
Joseph’s Children’s Hospital aims to help parents
amilies in the Tampa Bay area now have an easier way to keep their children safe in and around their home. St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital recently opened The Safety Store, the first hospitalbased one in Florida.
The Safety Store provides a comfortable environment for families to shop, learn and ask questions about how to keep children safe. Each year more than 3 million U.S. children ages 14 and younger are treated in emergency centers for accidental injuries that occur in the home. More than 2,000 of these children die as a result of their injuries. Safety experts estimate that 90 percent of these injuries are preventable. Low-cost injury-prevention products available include bath water thermometers, infant safety gates, bike helmets, child passenger safety seats, cabinet locks, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, smoke alarms and window blind cord wraps.
“Many parents and caregivers are simply unaware of the risks around the home and on the road that present a danger to their children,” said St. Joseph’s children’s advocate Rebecca Kynes. “The Safety Store is staffed by trained child advocates who help families determine their safety needs and select appropriate products. In the store, child advocates also provide free education on how to use and maintain the safety products, including demonstrations on how to install a child passenger seat and the correct way to wear a bike helmet. The Safety Store is in the lobby of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visit www.stjosephschildrens.com or call 813443-2046 to learn more.

say ‘cheese’
I
............................................ By James McIlwain, DMD A lifetime of beautiful smiles is easy to achieve
t’s something we all want – a beautiful smile. But many of us aren’t sure what it takes to keep a beautiful smile from birth through adulthood. We’re even less sure about how to keep our children’s teeth clean and cavity-free. The good news is that building healthy habits isn’t very hard. Here’s some advice on how to ensure they’ll always look good when saying, “cheese.” Babies should see the dentist at one year. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Dental Association all recommend scheduling an appointment once your child’s first teeth have come in, usually between 6 and 12 months. This first friendly visit gives the dentist a chance to check for early signs of cavities, as well as talk to you about tooth brushing, nutrition and decay prevention. It makes the child familiar and comfortable in the office. Cavities are contagious. Decay is caused by streptococcus mutans, a bacteria that feeds on sugar and produces acid which attacks enamel. These bacteria are passed on to babies by moms who have a history of dental problems, with large amounts of these infectious bacteria in their saliva. Every time you share a spoon or cup with your infant, or clean a pacifier by sticking it in your mouth, you may be passing on cavity-causing germs. All children eventually have the strep bacteria in their mouths, but those who get them during infancy have a greater lifelong risk of decay. Start mouth cleaning early. While your baby is toothless, wipe his gums with a wet washcloth after each feeding. Once the first tooth appears, use a tiny brush with a smear of fluoride toothpaste. It would take a massive amount of toothpaste to cause fluorosis or discoloring of the permanent teeth. When to floss. Flossing instruction for the child starts as permanent teeth erupt at age 6 or 7. Individual flossers are easier for kids to maneuver and come in many attractive colors and styles. Once a day is sufficient and bedtime is best, because if the teeth and mouth are clean at bedtime, we have 8-12 hours of an uninterrupted healthy environment, which is half the day. Accidents will happen. Babies learning to walk fall many times. They don’t have far to fall, so frequently there is no dental damage. If a baby tooth is broken, turns grey, or becomes sensitive, a call or visit to the dental office is in order. Teeth that are knocked out should have an x-ray to be sure there are no fragments or broken roots. Permanent teeth that fall out should be placed in milk and replaced as soon as possible. The quicker the reimplantation, the better the prognosis.
Protecting Permanent Teeth. Dental sealants can lower the cavity risk on permanent molars by 90 percent. A thin plastic coating is applied to the teeth soon after they erupt, usually about age 6. It hardens to form a barrier that seals out food and bacteria. A second round of sealants protects the second permanent molars at age 12. Worn sealants can be strengthened at routine checkups. Another good reason for regular checkups. Mouthguards for sports. Most parents wouldn’t allow their child to play soccer or hockey without athletic protective gear, but nearly 70 percent don’t wear mouthguards, according to a survey by the American Orthodontic Association. Mouthguards not only protect teeth, they soften blows that cause concussion, neck injury and jaw fractures. Any sport can benefit from a mouthguard, even baseball and basketball. health reform
T
hey’re the questions on my mind and many other parents. What the heck does health care reform mean for me and my kids? How much is it going to cost me? Now I, like many parents, only have increments of 30 seconds to watch the news as I spend most of my mornings prying my children from bed, which then leads me to spend countless quarters a day at the local coffee shop on a newspaper that I never have time to read. So I’ve probably spent in excess of $30 trying to inform myself on health care reform and still know nothing. So, what’s the deal with health care reform? There are many layers to the recently passed health care reform bill. Here’s a basic overview of what it means to families. What about my college-age child’s coverage? Before President Obama signed the new bill into law, states regulated the age at which children were to be dropped from their parents’ policy, which in many states was 18. Since the
...................................... By Angela Ardolino A diagnosis for you and your family
law took effect, children up to the age of 26 can stay on their parents’ policy. What about children and pre-existing conditions? It is now against the law for insurance companies to deny coverage to children with pre-existing health conditions. This measure took effect immediately after President Obama signed the bill. Starting in 2014, insurers will be prohibited from denying coverage to adults. Will there be changes to CHIP? The Children’s Health Insurance Program, which insures children in lower-income families, will not be changed under the new law. But states can no longer refuse to cover children even if the state is financially stressed. Are there limits on coverage? The bill bans lifetime limits on coverage and restrictive annual limits on coverage. This is especially important for children and adults with illnesses such as cancer, where treatments easily can exceed the $1 million lifetime cap
that was on many health insurance policies. Are there any preventative programs under the new law? Under the new law, “qualified health plans” must provide immunizations and other preventive health service to children 18 and under. This measure will take effect Sept. 23. Now, I realize there are many layers to this cake but after doing minimal research I’m more at ease. Many people argue the reform will cost too much and will not work. I’m not agreeing or disagreeing, but I believe we are headed in the right direction. My family is the most important thing to me and I would do anything for them. Their health and safety always is at the top of my list and this new law makes me feel that my family will be taken care of, and I believe yours will be, too. Information from several news sources were used in this report.

breaking the silence Campaign empowers
I

By Lisette Campos
domestic violence sufferers to
t’s been 1½ years since we started research for the ABC Action News “Taking Action Against Domestic Violence” Campaign. Special projects producer Jennifer McVan and I began with the usual searches – crime stats, police reports and data from local shelters. While the statistics were alarming, we were most affected by the e-mails and handwritten letters that came in from viewers. “I know I’m not a headliner or a Rhianna…,” e-mailed Annette, referring to the highlypublicized case involving singers Rhianna and Chris Brown, “but what I do know is that there are more women like me going through domestic violence hell.” Another viewer wrote, “I must have started this 30 times and deleted it. I hope I finish it this time. I have so much to say but I am so afraid to open up. Each of us has a different scenario as to what we went through - how it started and why we stayed too long. All of our stories are pretty horrible. I’m sure that most women just don’t get it and feel that we are weak.” Each message was more powerful than the other. Our eyes welling up with tears on the day this e-mail landed in my inbox: “Last night you made me feel less dirty and judged. Thank you for that.” I’ve been in television news for almost 20 years and can honestly say that never has an assignment affected me more deeply. As
reporters we dig for facts and figures to help make our stories relevant. While the domestic violence numbers give us more than enough reasons to pause, it’s the people behind the stats that are most searing. In April, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement revealed the final crime stats for 2009. Crime may be down, but domestic violence is up – way up. It accounted for 40 percent of all violent crimes last year – 1 out of every 5 murders was related to domestic violence. Domestic violence stalking rose by 31 percent. Sadly, information technology is the latest weapon used by batterers – some of them in middle school and high school – using cell phones, texts, tweets and e-mail to chip away at victims’ self-esteem, identity and independence. Recent trends show that more and more teens are falling prey – and victims can be male and female – from the pimple-faced teen hiding the abuse from her parents, to the Ph.D. hiding it from colleagues in Armani suits and Bruno Magli shoes. Now in year two of our Taking Action Against Domestic Violence campaign, the stunner this year came from a tough talking probation officer in Polk County – a corrections officer by day and a domestic violence victim by night. That’s Kathy Haley. Today, she lives life in a wheelchair, having survived four gun shots at close range at the hands of her husband.
SPEAK OUT we did victims kept from getting help because they refused to accept they were victims in the first place. “I’m not a victim of domestic violence.” “That could never happen to me.” “That only happens to other people.” The truth is it’s happening everywhere, regardless of gender, race, religion, education or economic status. There are 12 certified domestic violence centers serving the Tampa Bay area and the statewide domestic violence hotline is here to help. The hotline, 1-800-500-1119, connects callers to the nearest domestic violence center based on the area code they’re calling from. The call is anonymous, can’t be traced and doesn’t show up on your phone bill. Help is out there but victims need to take the first step. Family and friends need to take action by speaking out against domestic violence and sharing the hotline number with those they suspect may be in a bad situation. Lissette Campos is director of community affairs at WFTS TV in Tampa. Visit www.abcactionnews. com/dv to learn more about the ABC Action News Taking Action Against Domestic Violence campaign.

Extraordinary woman
.....................................
BY ANGELA ARDOLINO
Mastering the art of family, work and community
Dr. Catherine Lynch met her husband by chance. At least that’s his story and he’s sticking to it. “I was introduced to my husband, Bob Buckhorn, by a colleague,” Lynch recounts. “Reportedly my friend happened to have me join her for lunch at the Centre Club and Bob[Buckhorn] happened to be there as well. To this day, they swear it was unplanned although she had been trying to get me to meet Bob for over a year.” The couple now have two daughters, Grace, 9, and Colleen, 4. For the Delray Beach native, life has been an adventure. She attended Georgetown University and graduated from the University of South Florida medical school. She completed her residency at USF and joined the faculty. She is now a professor and interim chairwoman for the department of obstetrics and gynecology.
What is the secret to your success?
The value of a supportive spouse cannot be underestimated. Bob and I both have busy schedules but his willingness to support me makes my activities and success possible. Additionally, I generally take a get it done approach. In general, once a task is completed, I don’t dwell on it further unless additional work is required. This allows focus to be centered on the tasks at hand.
What is your biggest fear?
Roller coasters
What goals do you have? I would like to continue to build the USF Ob/ Gyn program into a leader in women’s health. We have developed and hopefully will continue to develop many pioneering approaches to the treatment of women. The innovation and research at the USF College of Medicine will hopefully continue to be an integral part to the growth, economy and future of Tampa.
What advice would you give to other women?
Do the best that you can in any activity you decide to pursue. When I first started practicing obstetrics, female physicians were in the minority. Every so often I would have a patient state that they were so happy to be seeing me because I was a woman. I told
them that I wanted them to continue to be happy to see me because they thought they were getting the best care possible.
What is your proudest moment?
Every time my girls do something outstanding.
What is your biggest achievement?
Being asked to be the interim chairperson of the department of obstetrics and gynecology has truly been on honor. As such, it is the first time that a major clinical department in the college of medicine is chaired by a woman.
What are they joys and challenges of motherhood?
There is nothing better than having the girls snuggle up and cuddle. The challenges of being a mom include trying to get the girls to do chores, homework, etc.
How do you balance motherhood and work?
My husband plays a critical role in the balancing act of work and motherhood. The girls love it when I’m on call because it means that daddy will be cooking something like tortellini and I may bring donuts home in the morning. We also try to have dinner together as a family. It is a great way to connect and to keep life in balance. A few studies have shown that having dinner together as a family is one of the best things you can do to help your child in the future. According to the studies, it helps promote table manners and social skills which can be critical in almost any field.
What’s your favorite thing about living and working in Tampa?
When I came to Tampa to interview for medical school I was struck by the friendliness of the people. As a fourth generation Floridian, I was amazed how much of the old Florida that I had grown up with was still here. It is that true Florida appreciation and obviously, with that, the weather that I enjoy most.
Name something you would like to do before you die.
What’s your favorite restaurant to dine at with your kids? 220 East – they love the escargot.
Who’s your biggest inspiration or role model?
My mom. She raised five kids and always encouraged us to use the talents that we were given to the best of our abilities. We also always had dinner together as a family despite everyone’s activities. When my father was tied up at the hospital and would call home and say go on ahead and eat, she would start the meal off by saying to pray for the patient and their family that he was helping. Her support to all of us and to my father is probably why four of us ended up going into medicine.
What makes you happy?
Sitting outside in the evening with my husband and watching the children and the dogs run around and laugh and play.
How do you relax and rejuvenate yourself?
I enjoy cooking when I get home and now that the girls are older they love to jump in and help.
What is something people don’t know about you? I’m shy.
What message would you like to give to other women?
Our children only know the mother they had not the “June Cleaver” of our parents. If you want to wear your pearls while doing housework you can but don’t be afraid to wear them to pursue the career of your dreams. It is the quality of the time you spend with your children not the quantity.
What would you like to see in Tampa’s future?
A Tampa that lives up to its unlimited potential and, of course, with my husband, Bob Buckhorn as the mayor.
Hold my children’s children.
What’s your favorite thing to do with your kids in the Tampa Bay area?
Swimming and boating up the Hillsborough River.
What else would you like to share?
What a great resource USF is and how the cutting edge research undertaken here is helping to create high tech jobs, spinning out companies and building a world class medical and bio-health economy.

Consignment event welcomes the fashionable, frugal A new three-day consignment event launches this month in Temple Terrace hosted by Jumping Jeans that promises to offer struggling families a way to get value back from your family’s previous clothing investments. “With the down turned economy, families now have a better option when selling their kid’s old clothes and toys,” says Amanda Olson, co-founder of Jumping Jeans. “With estimations that a middle class family will spend $170,000 to raise just one child, an event like this offers parents the opportunity to recoup some of that money by consigning.” Jumping Jeans was formed in 2009 by sisters, Olson and Bonny Cable, who set out to help families clothe their children frugally and fashionably. Both are King High graduates and Florida College alumni. Bonny, who is pregnant with her first child, teaches elementary school, and Amanda is a stay-at-home mom of two boys. “What makes this sale so unique is the amount of money consigners can make. For selling maternity clothes as well as children’s toys and clothes, parents will receive 60 percent of the sale price,” says Olson. “This beats the 40 percent commission found at local consignment shops and that annoying haggling found at garage sales. And savvy shoppers who attend the consignment event will find upscale, gently-used children and maternity items at one-third of retail prices.”

Antar’s win earned him a $250 award, and his sponsoring teacher, Pilar Saad, received a matching cash prize. “It is encouraging to see so many teens heading into adulthood with a solid understanding of the principles upon which our country was founded,” said Bill of Rights Institute president and former teacher Victoria Hughes. “This year’s winners deserve the accolades of their peers, teachers and communities for their contribution to the national conversation on American citizenship.” To participate in this year’s competition, students were asked to articulate their thoughts on American citizenship by answering the following question: “What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?” Antar selected perseverance as the civic value topic of his essay and selected George Washington as most embodying the American character. In his winning essay, Antar wrote, “Had the delegates given up, the Constitution and the country would not exist as we know it. In the process of its creation, the U.S. Constitution proved the necessity of perseverance.” Universal Academy of Florida Senior Ali Antar’s essays described the perseverance the founders had to have to succeed in creating the Constitution.
More than 100,000 students attending public and private high schools, as well as homeschooled students from all 50 states, have participated in the Being an American Essay Contest to date, with nearly $500,000 in prize money being awarded to winning students and their teachers. Sponsors for this year’s contest included philanthropist David H. Koch, the Stuart Family Foundation, Amway Global, the Jack Miller Family Foundation, Norma Zimdahl, the History Channel and the Cincinnatus Foundation. Founded in 1999, the Bill of Rights Institute’s mission is to educate young people about the words and ideas of America’s founders, the liberties guaranteed in America’s founding documents and how the founding principles continue to affect and shape a free society. March of Dimes Honors 6-Year-Old Fundraiser One of Safety Harbor’s youngest fundraisers recently was honored for her work to help premature babies and their families. Samantha Kopec was presented with the March of Dimes Youth Recognition Award for Pinellas County and honored at a Pinellas County walk, where she was lauded for her three years of committed fundraising, quite a milestone for a six-year-old. This month, she will be recognized by her school for her success. “Samantha is a caring and giving child who wants to make this world a better place,” says her mom, Diana LeDonni. “She loves to do charity work and truly understands that there are many people less fortunate. She believes that she can change the world at six years old, and she makes me believe, too.” She was first introduced to the March of Dimes through her school, Safety Harbor Montessori Academy. Although the organization was selected by the school, it has since taken on personal meaning for Samantha when her twin cousins, Gianna Grace and Isabella Rita, were born premature at 30 weeks in January. After being in critical condition in the NICU at Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, both recovered. LeDonni says her daughter is hopeful that she’ll get to meet her cousins one day and that with the help of donations to the March of Dimes, her cousins will get to enjoy a healthy, happy childhood. When Samantha was first given her fundraising goal by the school, $25, she was convinced she could do more. She searched through closets for a larger collection container and designed a donation canister covered with pictures of her premature cousins and stickers that spelled out March for Babies. LeDonni says Samantha then carried the container wherever she went. When she’d completed her campaign, Samantha had raised more than $700. Samantha continues to participate in a variety of charity campaigns, such as buying and collecting school supplies for children, sending boxes of supplies and treats overseas to troops and taking part in Operation Shoebox, which provides Christmas gifts to third-world children. Visit www.marchforbabies.org/skopec to learn more about the March of Dimes or donate to Samantha’s fund.

Parents, Kids Make Beautiful Music at Music Together A new Music Together program has launched in the Tampa Bay area. You and Me and Music Together, under the guidance of owner and instructor Colleen McGrath, debuted its offerings through a set of spring sessions at Yoga Moves, 1045 Ninth Ave. N. in St. Petersburg. Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their parents. Classes are based on the principal that all children are musical and that by emphasizing music experiences rather than music concepts, children can discover the pleasure of making music. At Music Together classes, children often react instinctually to music, such as babies shaking their arms, toddlers bouncing around or older children dancing and singing away. “Opening this center is truly a dream come true,” says McGrath. “I believe Music Together is the best program of its kind. It’s well researched, it’s original, it produces successful results, but most of all it’s fun.” Music Together classes are comprised of segments of song, movement, chant and instrument play and led by a certified instructor who guides both children and adults through the music and creative activities. Classes, which run 45 minutes, feature students from birth through 5 and their adult caregivers. By learning in a mixed-age environment, children can develop at their pace. McGrath, who brings 15 years of performing and teaching experience to the program, is new to St. Petersburg and first learned of Music Together two years ago through colleagues. After researching further, she undertook its training and certification program, and found herself teaching Music Together classes in Berlin during the past year. She earned her bachelor’s degree in music performance with honors from Carnegie Mellon University and her master’s in opera from Boston Conservatory. She has performed worldwide as an opera singer and has taught all ages and levels of music. McGrath will be offering music sessions in the summer and fall at You and Me and Music Together. For class information, visit www.youandmeandmt.com or call McGrath at 813-409-4244.

Sweet Charity Launches New Season at Show Palace The Show Palace Dinner Theatre, 16128 U.S. 19 in Hudson, kicks off a new season with Bob Fosse’s classic musical Sweet Charity based on the Federico Fellini screenplay Nights of Cabiria and with music by Cy Coleman. The show runs through June 13. Sweet Charity offers a funny but tender look at the misadventures of the show’s naive namesake heroine, Charity Hope Valentine, a dance hostess who always gives her heart to the wrong man. Just as it appears her luck is starting to change with a debonair Italian film actor, she bumps into what could be Prince Charming in the form of a shy, sweet guy on the elevator. The Broadway classic includes such favorite numbers as Big Spender, If They Could See Me Now and The Rhythm of Life. “We are thrilled to present this exuberant and stunningly choreographed musical to the Show Palace stage,” said Matthew McGee, the theater’s artistic director. “Our mission is to celebrate and perpetuate the art of musical theater and with Sweet Charity, we are proud to present this classic musical and reinvigorate it for today’s audiences.” Those involved with the production of Sweet Charity include some local favorites, among them Samantha McKinnon Brown who plays Charity and Christopher Swan in the role of Oscar/ Vittorio. McKinnon Brown recently starred in the American Stage Theatre Co. production of Doubt and has performed regionally in Chicago and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Swan is wellknown to Florida audiences in numerous productions at American Stage Theatre Co., The Golden Apple, Palm Beach Dramaworks and The Hippodrome in Gainesville. In 2009, he received Sarasota Magazine’s nod for Best Actor in a Musical for his work in La Cage Aux Folles at The Golden Apple. Doors open two hours before each show for dinner and cocktails. The doors open at 1 p.m. and the show starts at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Performances begin at 8 p.m. and doors open for dinner and cocktails at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Matinees are available on select Wednesdays and Thursdays and most Saturdays. Tickets are $48 plus tax for dinner and the show. It’s $36.95 plus tax for the show only.
