ways TO Have a perFecT mOTHer’s Day
.......................... By ellIe HIrscH
M
other’s Day is quickly approaching, which means many of us moms are creating our lists and dropping hints left and right. Similar to Valentine’s Day, there is a lot of pressure to have the perfect day and receive the perfect gift, but what exactly does that mean? Mother’s Day is all about celebrating women as mothers and recognizing all of our hard work. It’s a day to put ourselves first instead of last. We deserve to get a gift that we love and actually want, right? We should expect our spouses to be creative and think outside the box. They should come up with plans for the day that will prove how well they know us and how much they appreciate us. Well, we would like to think so. in reality, not so much. Not to worry, though. This year you are going to receive everything you hoped for and more, whatever that may be! Discovering what we want is the easy part. Actually getting it can be a challenge. Some of us might have the perfect earrings picked out or a pair of sandals we’ve been stalking online. Some of us are content with a homemade card from the kids and a hot bath with no interruptions!
No matter what it is you’re seeking this Mother’s Day, your hubby is going to be in the know and deliver. Here’s how. it’s all about communication. Don’t beat around the bush. if you want something, ask for it. We’ve all said, “Do i have to spell it out for you?” And the answer is yes. i wish i had a new pair of gold hoops. i think i saw some really nice ones at (insert store name here). if you’re looking for gift ideas for me that would be a great one! That was clear, concise and even included the name of a store where your husband is able to find them. No guessing game there. Following is a subtle hint (which men don’t get) that will pretty much guarantee you don’t get those gold hoops! “i hate my gold hoops. They are so old, don’t you think? Talk to your spouse about what your ideal Mother’s Day looks like. My husband always asks me what i want to do on Mother’s Day and what gift i need or would like to ensure it’s a flawless event. Some women might prefer a
bit of mystery and surprise, but his way pretty much eliminates the disappointment factor. Oh and he always throws in a gift i didn’t expect but love! if you say you don’t want anything for Mother’s Day, but secretly hope your husband takes that to mean you do want something, you are gambling. Depending on your husband’s personality and how well he really knows you, you literally might not get anything. Or he will discover your reverse psychology tactic and run to the store. Say what you mean and don’t confuse your man! Some husbands think they have to spend a lot of money to come up with a fantastic gift. Not! it’s all about feeling appreciated and feeling that your significant other gets you. If you don’t have anything in mind for Mother’s Day, don’t go searching for gift ideas just because a date on the calendar suggests otherwise. your significant other will be just as confused and you will end up with a gift that you will for sure need to return. if you truly don’t want anything, communicate that to your husband and let him know that a brunch outing to your favorite spot and some me time is exactly what you want. Another line of communication is your children. Most likely, they will discuss Mother’s Day at

Talk to your children about the meaning of Mother’s Day and let them know what your ideal day would look like and include gift requests! Kids remember everything and like to share. They will surely be running back to dad with the info — mission accomplished. Receiving a homemade gift or card from your little ones is priceless. Personally, i would rather get something i know came from their heart versus some random gift my husband purchased on their behalf. if your hubby isn’t the creative type, even supplying him with paper and markers for the kids will create something just as special as if he took a trip to a crafts store and went all out. Remember, it’s not just about the gift but the thought. it can also be bonding time between dad and the kids. Make it simple for your mate. Print out pictures of items you crave and leave them on his pillow or email them to him. it might be a bit forward but it works. i actually email my husband my honey do list so i know he actually received it and read it and can reference it. Works every time and gets the tasks done! Whether you skywrite your wish list, have a conversation or utilize your little ones, express your wants, desires and needs for Mother’s Day. it’s the one day that everyone is actually listening and the one day it’s all about you! Take advantage of it and enjoy it. Wishing all you fabulous moms a wonderful Mother’s Day. i hope it’s exactly what you envision! Ellie Hirsch is the founder of Mommy Masters. Her educational children’s CD, Music is Magical Children’s Songs with Ellie is a 2013 Parents’ Choice Award winner.

Taking Action Against Domestic Violence Officer of the Year winners, from left, Major Alan Hill (2011 winner); Master Detective Charles Boswell (2013 winner); and Deputy Lyonelle De Veaux (2012 winner).
i
remember the moment clearly. i was on the stage of the Tampa Convention Center looking out into a sea of faces — more than 1,000 law enforcement officers and first responders. Survivors of domestic violence don’t always come back to say thank you. i would try to deliver that message for them. “Every survivor is different. Some said it was your words that helped them find the courage to leave. Others told me it’s what you didn’t say, that you listened and did not judge.” And that’s when i saw it – the look of recognition. At table after table, I saw officers leaning in to whisper a name, a location, a description. Their paths had crossed with abuse victims, too many times to count. They could relate. “On behalf of survivors of domestic violence who didn’t get the chance to say thank you for your help, we salute you and present the Taking Action Against Domestic Violence Officer of the Year award. Thank you for making a difference.” They smiled. i cried. Message received. That was May 24, 2011. ABC Action News will have the privilege of delivering that message of gratitude again this
month, almost three years to the day! Master Detective Charles Boswell will step forward to receive the 2013 Taking Action Against Domestic Violence Officer of the Year award. A 20-year plus veteran of the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office, he has been nominated by advocates at The Spring, the Department of Children and Families and certified domestic violence center for Hillsborough County, every year since the award was created in 2011.
The Spring. “Law enforcement is an important partner in the work to end domestic violence,” says Tiffany Carr, president and CEO of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence. “An important part of raising community awareness is recognizing the work of law enforcement personnel such as Detective Boswell who work daily to protect our citizens and our communities.”
“Domestic violence is an incredibly dangerous crime and can escalate quickly,” Carr explains. “In fact, during the first six months of 2012, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s most recent Semiannual Crime Report, domestic violence murders increased a staggering 29.5 percent. We know that when law enforcement and domestic violence advocates work together homicides are reduced. An initiative in Hillsborough and Pinellas [counties], partnering a law enforcement officer with a certified domestic violence center advocate, Advocates agree that showcasing the work of has successfully reduced homicides in these officers doesn’t just help victims it helps officers two counties by 21 percent and 8 percent, respectively.” with their training!
“Boswell is a remarkable detective. He really cares about victims and understands the challenges they face,” explains Roseanne Cupoli of The Spring. “He is very thoughtful in his tone, his demeanor and how he talks to victims. He is aware of how he, as a law enforcement officer, may be perceived by a victim and why she may be hesitant to speak with him. He is patient and understands that a little more work on his part can go a really long way to enhance the victim’s safety. Simply put, he gets it!”
“Supporting law enforcement personnel as they learn new approaches will encourage victims to seek services and reminds the community that batterers must be held accountable even when their victims are too scared or traumatized to take action,”says Mindy Murphy, president of
Boswell has certainly had his share of domestic violence cases over the years. He’s tracked down recordings of 911 operators, listened in on jailhouse phone calls and testified against abusers when their own victims refused to do it.

...................................................................................................................................................... “i could describe the line of work with multiple adjectives but the ones which most frequently come to mind are challenging, frustrating and rewarding,” Boswell says. “i like to think about the success stories, but in between those are countless, mundane cases where the victim refuses to accept the help which we are capable of providing. For those who accept the services, the cycle of abuse is stopped.”
THUMBS UP FOR YMCA SUMMER CAMP Why choose YMCA Summer Camps?
Summer camps at the Y focus on nurturing the potential of children and helping them grow in spirit, mind and body. We encourage fun and friendship and provide the opportunity for young people to build self-esteem, develop interpersonal skills and make lasting memories. Camps are offered in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.
Asked about the patience that advocates talk so much about, Boswell says it goes back to a case in 1995 in Thonotosassa that had a tremendous impact on him. The victim had refused to press charges even after the abuser abducted her in public, beat her with a steel club and tossed her from his car. He was tried, convicted and sent to the state penitentiary. “The victim was furious with me,” Boswell recalls. “i, equally, was disgusted by the fact that she had testified for him. Several years went by and one day i received a call at work. it was the victim! i was not very receptive to taking her call but out of professional obligation i did. She called to thank me for what i did for her that night for standing by her side even though she didn’t want me to at that time. i have never heard from her again but in that brief conversation she opened my eyes as to the long term affect that we can have on an individual life.” That was almost 18 years ago. He still remembers. So does she. ABC Action News tracked that survivor to Georgia. When we told her about Boswell’s award, there was silence on the other end of the line. “He deserves it,” she said softly. “[He] opened my eyes to a lot of things.” Lissette Campos is the director of community affairs for WFTS TV ABC Action News, the 2013 recipient of the National Association of Broadcasters’ Service to Community Award for its annual Taking Action Against Domestic Violence Campaign.
How You Can Help it’s important for the community to support the efforts of law enforcement and local domestic violence centers. The Spring, which has provided sanctuary and services to more than 60,000 abused adults and their children since its founding in 1977, offers the following five tips:
ymcatampabay.org
1. Believe that law enforcement officers are there to help you, your loved one or your neighbor. 2. Organize domestic violence awareness events at your business or workplace, through a civic group or your place of worship. 3. Financially support your local domestic violence center so that it can continue to provide services and be a resource partner for law enforcement. 4. If you know a law enforcement officer or domestic violence advocate, say thanks for the sometimes heartbreaking work they do to help women and families. Genuine words of appreciation can make their day! 5. if you are a man, place value on kindness and compassion and demonstrate that to those around you. Batterers are overwhelmingly men and communities need to stop the cycle.

re you tired of dealing with heavy menstrual bleeding, also known as menorrhagia, and a monthly period that has gone from five days to 12 or more? Many women are suffering in silence for no reason. The first step is scheduling your annual gynecologic visit. Typically, how you describe your heavy period matters, and it can affect your overall health. if you suffer from heavy periods, there are effective treatment options.
Do:
• You find yourself needing to change your sanitary products every hour. • You carry around an extra set of clothes just in case. • You search on-line before going out to locate the bathrooms. • You have a well-rehearsed list of excuses for cancelling plans.
Causes of Menorrhagia
• Fibroids: These benign (noncancerous) tumors of the uterus typically appear during your childbearing years. • Polyps: Benign growths on the lining of the inside of the uterine wall. • Adenomyosis: This condition occurs when glands from the endometrium become embedded in the uterine muscle, often causing heavy bleeding and painful periods. • Cancer: Some cancers, such as uterine, ovarian
and cervical, can lead to excessive menstrual bleeding. • Medications: Certain drugs, including blood thinners, can contribute to heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding. improper use of hormone medications also can cause menorrhagia. • Other Medical Conditions: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PiD), thyroid problems and liver or kidney disease may be associated with menorrhagia. • Inherited Bleeding Disorders: Some blood coagulation disorders — such as von Willebrand’s disease, a condition in which an important blood-clotting factor is deficient or impaired — can cause abnormal menstrual bleeding. This is typically diagnosed in teenagers.
Treating Menorrhagia
Treatment depends on several factors, including the underlying cause, patients’ preferences and the need to prevent pregnancy or desire to have children. There are nonsurgical and surgical options. For women who have polyps or fibroids, surgery to remove the growth can reduce or end heavy bleeding. • Hormonal Birth Control: Hormonal methods of birth control reduce bleeding during your menstrual period. it might take three months for bleeding to improve after you start taking hormonal birth control. • Antifibrinolytic Medicines: These medicines work by helping to decrease the amount of
bleeding during your monthly period. One option is tranexamic acid (Lysteda). These medications slow bleeding quickly, usually within two to three hours. you only take them when on your period, and you can try to conceive while taking them. • Myomectomy: A surgical procedure where fibroids are removed from of the uterus. • Uterine Artery Embolization: A radiologic procedure where the blood supply to the fibroids or the entire uterus is blocked to shrink fibroids or help decrease heavy periods. • Dilation and Curettage: A surgical procedure used to diagnose the cause of heavy period and also remove thickened endometrial tissue or polyps. • Endometrial Ablation: An outpatient procedure that heats the lining of the uterus. This can reduce heavy menstrual bleeding or cause you to stop having monthly periods. it is important to note that this is not an option for women who want to become pregnant. • Hysterectomy: Surgery that removes the uterus. This is a permanent treatment option that cures heavy menstrual bleeding. However, surgery can have complications and may require up to six weeks for full recovery. if you are suffering from heavy periods, do not ignore the signs. Be bold and make an appointment with your medical professional. Take the first step to returning to normal periods and living life to the fullest. Put yourself first!

new OpTIOns In cOnTracepTIOn
Women want a birth control that is effective, convenient and easy-touse with minimal side effects. Today women have many options when it comes to preventing pregnancy. Let’s start with birth control pills. These are still a popular option because they provide effective contraception and also other noncontraceptive benefits, including regulating your periods, improving acne, menstrual cramps and PMS and even decreasing heavy bleeding. Many pills now contain lower doses of hormones and can be taken continuously to avoid a period or decrease the number of periods. Another popular option is Nuvaring, a vaginal contraceptive ring that contains similar hormones to a birth control pill but allows the convenience of once-a-month dosing instead of taking a pill daily. The Ortho Evra Patch is a small square that sticks to the skin and is changed once a week. it also has similar hormones to a birth control pill. Many patients are looking for a long-term option that can last months or even years. Depo Provera is a progesterone injection that is administered every three months. it’s convenient and effective and can be used by most women. An iUD is a small device that is inserted into the uterus by your doctor. There are currently two types available. The Mirena iUD can last up to five years and contains progesterone, which provides shorter, lighter periods. Some
women do not have their period with this iUD. in addition to its use .............................. as a contraceptive, it has also been approvedByto mark treat heavy periods Heller in women. The Paragard iUD does not contain any hormones so it is a good option for women who cannot or choose not to use hormones. it can last up to 10 years. The Nexplanon is a small device (about the size of a matchstick) that is inserted under the skin of the inner upper arm and can last for three years. it contains progesterone and is becoming a popular choice with younger women and those who need an effective, convenient alternative to an iUD. Finally, for women who desire a more permanent birth control, there is tubal ligation or occlusion. Essure is a method of permanent birth control that can be done in your doctor’s office or in the hospital. Small inserts are placed into the fallopian tubes that over time create a barrier to prevent pregnancy. No incisions are made so recovery time is quick. it is also hormone free. A confirmation test is performed three months after the procedure. There are many choices in birth control available today. it is important to discuss your individual needs and health history with your doctor to determine the best option for you. Gem Ashby, MD, and Kristen Segall, MD, are part of Women’s Care of Florida and see patients at locations in Carrollwood, Wesley Chapel and the USF area. uilding self-esteem, enjoying the sweet success of adjusting to being away from home, making friendships and rising to a host of new challenges are some of the compelling reasons to send your child to sleep-away camp. A good camp shepherds campers through a host of experiences, supports them while they navigate through new situations and affords them the invaluable opportunity to move beyond their comfort zone and grow as individuals. Few things make a child more proud than knowing they can master a challenge and succeed in a new setting. i can do it. i am a success. i am capable. These are just some of the positive affirmations that children take away after a summer at camp. And these powerful mantras have a lifelong impact. yet there’s one thing that we didn’t deal with as kids that impedes our children’s social successes: technology. if you are a parent over 30, chances are as a youngster you rode your bike freely, stretching your independence with little fear or constraints from your parents. you played pickup ball on your street, climbed trees, caught frogs, pitched tents in your backyard and wore through the soles of your new sneakers before you grew out of them. you created activities outside without arranged play dates and mom and dad for the most part stayed in the wings unless you needed their help. The bottom line is that with the advent of the internet, 24-hour news channels and Amber Alerts, parents have
become fearful and children no longer have the same freedom and often suffer from lack of independence. To add fuel to the fire, today’s kids are deluged with distracting technologies that actually hobble their social skills. Conversations have gone the way of texting, which is devoid of inflection and body language, often leaving children with difficulty reading social cues. Video games edge out pickup games in the park. And Facebook has eclipsed group activities and pitted kids against images of others who seem happier, prettier and more popular. Technology is here to stay and with it comes many advantages. However, technology has a way of distracting us from real life and creates a vacuum for kids. Some call it nature deficit disorder, emphasizing the need to play outside and spend time enjoying our natural surroundings. However, the even bigger issue is that as social beings, children desperately need to practice communicating face to face. Without that opportunity, their social development is stunted, which may have implications academically and professionally as they become adults. Sleep-away camps that are technology-free give kids a fertile environment to fully and freely engage with each other as human beings. Campers interact on the basis of who they are not what they post on a social networking platform or how skilled they are at a video game. They are simply campers as we were decades ago. There is an honesty and sincerity that envelopes them.
Group conversations create opportunities to become more assertive and verbal or empathetic and sensitive to others. Children are free to reinvent themselves in a community that depends upon, actually thrives upon, communication and togetherness. When technology is removed from camp, there is room for not only robust activities of skill and stamina like color war and Apache relay races, there is room for quiet conversations around a campfire, during flashlight time before bed and at rest hour while writing letters with real paper and pen. Those magical campfires bring us back to the basics — a relaxed, natural place where we are in awe by the fire’s ability to inspire a community, where we are equally aligned in our basic human needs for comfort, connection and face-to-face communication. Beyond the beauty and symbolism of the campfire and the meaningful dialogues it sparks, the evening gatherings reinforce some powerful messages that are distinctly unique to the sleep-away camp experience: first, that the camper can separate successfully from mom and dad, giving them confidence and a sense of independence; second, that deep friendships can be made and real bonding done without parental orchestration; and third, and this is the biggest lesson in my opinion, that they can be protected and cared for by adults other than mom and dad. Technology sucks kids in for hours at a time,

removing precious hours from daily living and opportunities to read, relax, play, interact, use board games or play cards with others. There is little chance to hide at sleep-away camp, unlike the hiding that is done behind a screen. Being exposed to constant social interaction and connectedness is powerful for kids and is the single most valuable aspect of sleep-away camp. When kids navigate through the maze of challenges and accomplishments at camp they feel successful. They know they can survive without parents in their immediate orbit and that they can build relationships with their peers and mentors. They can enjoy experiences free of the distraction technology creates. They can work out conflicts with peers with the help of a supportive, caring counselor or camp director. They have a new family and a second home where they are now an integral part.

Sleep-away campers gain confidence and become more grounded and independent, thus giving their parents satisfaction and the ultimate return on their unplugged investment. Lauren Pine Bernstein is the owner and director of Camp Walden in Diamond Point, NY. Visit www.campwaldenny.com to learn more about her work at summer camps.
Ways to unplug: 1. Soften the blow. Call a family meeting to discuss your summer vacation schedule. Explain that it’s going to be a digital-free summer -- and why. Then move quickly to No. 2. 2. Be flexible. So no one feels completely out of touch, plan something media-related that you can all do together. Have a family movie night once a week, or schedule time during the day that gives everyone time to check their email or text a friend. (Set a timer!) 3. Unplug yourself. Kids learn more from what you do than from what we say. When you’re not at work, say so long to your iPhone or Blackberry. 4. Do your research. if your family is traveling over the summer, plan offline activities that relate to where you’re going. Whether it’s down the street or around the world, there’s always something for the family to do together that doesn’t involve technology. 5. Get outdoors. Devote 30-minutes every day to getting outside with the kids. you can do anything you want from creating an outdoor fort to flying a kite to making a paint can banjo. For some great outdoor activities, read Imagine Childhood by Sarah Olmstead. For more tips on how your family can unplug over the summer holiday, visit www.commonsensemedia.org.

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.
Marne Sutten and her husband met in Germany during a military exercise and have been married for almost eight years. They were married in Reykjavik, iceland, in a civil service to ensure they would be stationed together upon moving back to the United States. Their official wedding with friends and family took place at the Old Post Chapel in Arlington Cemetery. The couple has two children, a 4-year old son and an almost 6-year old daughter. Sutten has been in the Army for 17 years, moving nine times and serving in iraq and overseas in Korea and Germany. She now serves as the commander of the 2nd Joint Communications Squadron of the Joint Communications Support Element. The unit, which jumps out of airplanes or helicopters, is comprised of personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.
What do you think is the secret to your family’s success? Having a supportive husband, amazing grandparents and a relationship built on a deep mutual respect for one another is the key to our family’s success. My husband also serves in the Army, and we are both stationed at MacDill Air Force Base. He not only understands the sacrifice it takes to serve in the armed forces, but also serves as a sounding board and provides me invaluable advice. Additionally, Grant and i have extremely supportive parents that help out if we are deployed or traveling. Grant and i would not be able to continue our profession without them.
What advice would you give to other women? it is acceptable to not be perfect as both a mother and a professional all the time. Too often, women walk away from a profession they love because they are afraid their children will not get the quality time that they need and deserve. i believe women try so hard to be perfect at everything when, in reality, perfection is not the goal. you can concentrate on certain aspects of your life and make compromises
on others. i like to have a clean house but struggle to keep everything clean. Hiring someone to help clean is one of the best investments we have made. i would rather spend the weekend playing with my children instead of mopping floors and wiping countertops. Healthy, home-cooked meals are always the goal in our family, but i have come to understand that carry-out or pizza makes life a little less stressful. Balancing a family and a profession takes time and dedication, but the happiness that i get from our family is worth all the hard work.
What is your proudest moment? My proudest moment is when i followed in the footsteps of a long lineage of my family who served in the Army. i am a third generation signal corps officer, with my grandfather serving in World War ii and my father serving in Vietnam and Desert Storm. i have also deployed overseas for my country, having served two tours in Operation iraqi Freedom. My husband and i both love our country and believe in the importance of serving.
What is your biggest achievement? My biggest achievement is having such wonderful children that are kind and respectful. i feel a sense of pride when our kids say that they want to be soldiers like their mommy and daddy. They also are proud to salute the American flag and stand at attention on base as the flag is retired at the end of the day. The military life is a rewarding profession and i feel honored to serve with so many amazing people.
What makes you happy? Traveling the world and moving to new cities with my husband and children is an amazing aspect of military life. We have met so many wonderful people from all walks of life and experienced so many great areas of the United States and abroad. Seeing my children experience new cultures and creating new family traditions make the challenge
of moving worthwhile. Our children are young, but they are extremely flexible about moving and adapting to new situations and environments. Quality family time definitely keeps our family ties strong and we are all closer to each other for sharing the experience of moving.
How do you relax and take time for yourself? Admittedly, finding time for me has been difficult while working and taking care of such young and active children. My favorite time is getting up early and having a cup of coffee on our back porch. Everything is so peaceful and it gives me time to reflect on the day and everything that has to be accomplished. Also, i take time to exercise, run and swim. I find exercising gives me time to think about how fortunate i am to have so much happiness and good health.
What is your favorite thing to do with your kids in Tampa Bay? We love living in such an amazing place with so many fantastic things to do. Tampa has a festival, market or event every weekend that we can enjoy with our family and friends. The kids enjoy visiting the zoo, aquarium or children’s museum while my husband and i are amazed at all the incredible restaurants. We love Tampa so much that we have considered retiring here after our military service is over.
Who is your biggest inspiration or role model? My husband is my biggest inspiration and makes me want to be a better and more patient person. He has always supported me serving in the military and is an amazing father to our children. We have both deployed several times to iraq and he did an amazing job as a single father during my last deployment. He made sure that i received pictures and videos of the kids to keep me from being too homesick. He managed to balance the children and his military job with ease.
