MOTHERHOOD DEFINED MY CAREER AND LIFE MESSAGE FROM GUEST EDITOR JENNIFER STANCIL

t’s possible to say that mothers and motherhood have been a defining— potentially one of the most defining— themes of my life. My grandparents took care of me before I ever went to kindergarten. Even though my grandmother couldn’t drive, everyone knew she was in the driver’s seat. My mom struggled through corporate America in male-dominated fields while being a single parent to two girls. As for me, at a pivotal time in my life, I had a choice between a Ph.D. and a life in academia as a scientist and mathematician, or an innovative path through museum education, a creative endeavor that has impacted millions so far. So at 26, I said I didn’t want to live by the “publish or perish” mantra. I wanted to be a mom and have a career and not put that off until later in life. I opened my first museum in downtown Birmingham, and again in downtown Raleigh before the age of 30. I created a juggernaut award-winning website for girls and science that I launched from maternity leave, and beat out 6,000 international competitors for a MacArthur Digital Media Award for the “spy school” for girls I wrote while in Pittsburgh. I even testified at the U.N. in Brussels specifically about how women in the U.S. were finding success as scientists and mothers, all before I was 40. I won an Emmy ® and became CEO of the Glazer Children’s Museum in the same week, days before I turned 45. These were all important moments, but none rivaled the birth of my own daughter, Avery Grace, when I was 37.

Motherhood for me is a full contact sport. Minds-on, hands-on. I’m at conferences, scheduling summer camps, finding resources, and eking out every moment as a learning opportunity. I’m in charge. Just like my Mom. Just like my Grandmother. I’m totally in charge...until I’m not. A month before her intended arrival, both she and I were in life-threatening peril. After 34 hours of labor, an emergency C-section saved both our lives. I have an image of her, intubated and fragile, embedded in my mind, and I keep it there for an important reminder. That night, Dec. 2, I was not in charge. I simply prayed that my daughter would make it through the night though I couldn’t hold her, cuddle, cradle or console her. My husband assured me, strong as a rock. The doctors and nurses assured me. But I wasn’t in charge. Avery not only survived, she’s thriving. And she’s taught me how to be a better mother by trusting that she’s strong enough on her own, even when I have to step back. Someday, Avery will struggle and figure out how to have her own career, how to find her best life partner and her best self. And whenever it happens, she’ll be a mom too, refining and defining how motherhood inevitably will impact her life. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day.

At the American Heart Association Tampa Bay Heart Ball on April 29, guests were brought to tears by the incredible journey of a courageous young man named Garrett Leopold and the story of how his life extraordinarily intertwined with the Pierce family.

arrett was born in 1996 with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) – a congenital heart defect that means the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. HLHS is usually fatal within the first days or months of life unless it's quickly treated with a series of operations or heart transplantation. At 3 months old, Garrett received his first heart transplant. After a few stable years, Garrett’s health problems continued. “When I was 6 years old, I was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer,” Garrett said. With determination and strength, and by the grace of God, Garrett beat his cancer. Fast forward to eighth grade: Garrett was 15, feeling good, and back in public school. But within months, he began experiencing shortness of breath, severe lethargy and chest pain. “I knew something was going on. I knew something wasn’t right,” Garrett said.

Garrett learned that 15 years after his first heart transplant, he’d need another. For seven long, trying months Garrett was bound to the hospital and on medication 24/7. “I was put into the hospital Aug. 23, 2012, not knowing when I’d get out. My world was turning upside down,” Garrett said. In March 2013, Garrett took a turn for the worse. He was in dire need of a new heart. That same weekend, Plant High School senior Amanda Pierce passed away in a car accident. Amanda was preparing to attend Tallahassee Community College with goals of transferring to Florida State University and studying special education. Amanda was generous, fun-loving and full of compassion. She had a heart of gold. Amanda’s last gracious act was donating her organs, a decision she made on her own at 16. It was through this act that Garrett received his new heart and another start at life.

“So often the people who share the ultimate gift of life are forgotten and anonymous,” said Laurie Pierce, Amanda’s mom. “Amanda was a vibrant, loving person on Earth. It is my hope that she will always be remembered.” In the year that followed Garrett’s transplant, he and Amanda’s family connected. Their relationships have grown throughout the years and together, Garrett and Laurie shared their stories at the Heart Ball. “There have been so many others in my shoes who have not made it,” Garrett said. “There is more research to be done and more people to help, and I hope that people are impacted by my journey and inspired to support the American Heart Association.” “You can see the passion the American Heart Association has in helping raise awareness of heart disease,” Laurie said. “My hope is that when people learn about Amanda and Garrett, they will see we are all connected in life. Garrett and I are connected in a profound way, and his and Amanda's story is really a story of love and helping one another.”

During the Heart Ball, guests witnessed a momentous dance between Garrett and Laurie. A dance they’d practiced for months. A dance where Laurie would hear Amanda’s heart beat again. “I love Laurie. This experience has given me an even deeper respect for her and how she always makes me feel worthy of having Amanda’s heart,” Garrett said. The American Heart Association funds more pediatric cardiac research than any U.S. organization except the federal government. In 2016, the organization funded more than $13.5 million in research related to children’s heart disease. Despite the progress made in understanding and treating congenital heart defects, more research is needed. “When my wife Julie and I committed to chairing the Heart Ball, we never thought we’d encounter a story like Amanda and Garrett’s that would change our lives and the lives of countless people in our community,” said Allen Brinkman, CEO of SunTrust Bank and the 2017 Heart Ball chair. “We are beyond moved by Laurie and Garrett’s bravery and strength, and we are grateful for the American Heart Association supporters who have dedicated their resources to fighting cardiovascular diseases.”

There is more research to be done and more people to help, and I hope that people are impacted by my journey and inspired to support the American Heart Association.

create Functional playrooms parents can actually show off Finally, here’s my own play space in which our children play in our living room. I wanted the toys to be hidden when my children are not in the room, so I created a faux-pleated table skirt to go over a console that hides all our toys in bins. I leave the skirt up during the day so that toys are easily accessible, and put it down at night.

layrooms are spaces that every parent hopes will be not only fun, but also functional. The biggest complaint I hear from parents is, “There’s too much stuff. My children can’t find the toys to play with in the first place.” When working on playroom design, the first conversation I have with the client is about decluttering. Remove and donate any toys your children have outgrown other than staples such as Legos and other creative building toys that sometimes need time to be “re-admired.” After we weed out the toys, we organize them by type: large toys, building toys, puzzles, dolls and stuffed animals. Finally, we decide how to organize the toys within the space. Some parents opt to have their home office dwell in the same space as the playroom, others have a dedicated playroom, and some even work the playroom into their natural living space. Below I have highlighted three unique playroom spaces.

This playroom is a not only a play space, but also an office for a parent who works from home. The office portion is not pictured here, but this space had plenty of room for both. We used the IKEA Kallax shelving units and bolted them to the wall. The bins are white, but we added fun fabric trim to the top so they wouldn’t be missed within the white shelving units.

Now you see it, now you don't!

Here’s a playroom that resides in the “hub” of the home. This one also used an IKEA Kallax, but has a TV viewing space, art space and spaces for some larger toys that needed homes as well. The chairs are also from IKEA and are super comfortable for both kids and adults.

Prevent a child from drowning

During National Drowning Prevention month, educate yourself, your neighbors and other caregivers on how to keep kids safe By Kelley Parris

rowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the Tampa Bay region. In fact, over the last five years, more than 40 children under the age of 6 have died from drowning in our area. Six of those deaths occurred in 2016.

Drowning deaths in young children must end, and you can help. Educate friends, neighbors, babysitters, grandparents and other potential caregivers about the dangers of drowning and the measures they can take today to keep children safe around water.

Drowning can happen to any child, anywhere, at any time. It’s not limited to pools and beaches – there are potential hazards in and around your home that can put your kids at risk.

Every member of our community – not just parents – bears the responsibility of educating themselves and others on water safety tips to eliminate the death of a child that is 100 percent preventable.

During National Drowning Prevention and National Water Safety Month, take a few minutes to learn about the dangers of drowning and how you can help prevent a child’s death.

PUT THESE IMPORTANT TIPS TO USE: • Stay alert. Child drowning often happens silently, without the child splashing or calling out for help. This makes it even easier for a drowning child to go unnoticed, so stay alert.

• Designate a “water watcher.” Lack of adult supervision in and around the water is the main reason children die from

drowning. An adult should be assigned to keep their eyes on the child at all times when they are near water. The watcher has to avoid distraction, especially by phone calls, texting or other electronic devices.

• Be within arm’s reach. Young children can drown in as little as 20 seconds. When infants and toddlers are in or around

water, an adult should be within arm’s reach, meaning the adult is close enough to rescue the child if needed providing hands-on supervision.

• Never rely on floatation devices. There is no substitute for supervision – not even flotation devices, such as water wings,

inner tubes, or even life vests.

• Enclose your pool and create barriers so children can’t access it. Be sure your pool and any pool your child visits follows all legal requirements for barriers and locks. All pools should have isolation fencing with self-closing, self-latching locks that are out of reach from small children.

• Get professional help. Take advantage of programs that offer swim lessons. For example, The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County’s Mobile Water Safety Team provides swim lessons and water safety education at no cost in community and apartment complex pools.

• Be aware of hidden hazards. A child can drown in as little as 1 inch of water. Everything from your toilet to your pet’s water bowl can pose a drowning risk. Empty all bathtubs, buckets and inflatable pools when they are no longer in use. Keep pet bowls out of reach from children and bathroom doors closed.

My favorite go-to recipe for summer picnics. I’ve been making this recipe forever since growing up in Nebraska, where picnics and corn are legendary!

SMASHED POTATO AND CORN SALAD INGREDIENTS

3 pounds red-skinned potatoes, scrubbed 1/2 cup fresh corn kernels (cut from 3 ears of corn) 3/4 cup plain yogurt 3/4 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice 1/4 bunch chives, snipped to 1/2inch lengths (about 1/4 cup) 1 fresh jalapeno, thinly sliced crosswise Salt and freshly ground pepper PREPARATION

1. Place potatoes in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until tender. Remove from heat and drain. Let cool. Break potatoes into chunks with your fingers, or break them up with a wooden spoon.

2. Meanwhile, bring a small saucepan of water to a boil. Add corn and blanch until tender and bright yellow, about 3 minutes. Drain and let cool. 3. In a small bowl, combine yogurt and sour cream. Stir in lemon or lime juice, all but 2 tablespoons of the chives, and the jalapeno, and season to taste with salt and pepper. 4. In a large serving bowl, combine potatoes and corn, reserving some corn for garnish. Toss with dressing, and garnish with remaining corn and chives. ream It. Be It. Y ou’ll see it as a tag line on Glazer Children’s Museum ads, but did you know that it is actually our curriculum? DREAM is Glazer Children’s Museum’s version of STEAM. Your child, while at the Museum, is immersed in “trying on their future” through our series of exhibit galleries, programs and experiences. The Museum is here to make playing to learn impactful for your child while preparing them to be part of what we call the Imagination Generation. Through DREAM, we explore and emphasize reading, engineering, arts, math, music and how our world is designed. Below are just a few of my favorite ways to allow your child’s imagination to run wild at Museum while helping them shape their own future.

BE A GLOBAL EXPLORER

In late 2016, we opened a new, two-story area called The Global Cafe, comprised of a downstairs “language lessons” bar where we also do global crafts and an upstairs dedicated to West Africa (a drum hut) and Japan (a pagoda with tea settings and a sushi prep counter). Whether your child is trying on a traditional outfit (grown-ups can too), trying their hand at origami or participating in a call and response drumming circle, the emphasis on exploration helps kids understand and find similarities and differences in culture. B ecause of the way our brains form, the best time to learn a language is under the age of 8. O ne of my favorite books is called “If The World Were A Village,” a nd it puts the entire population of Earth into 100. If you spoke just a few languages, you could speak with most anyone on the planet easily. This month, we’re engaged in celebrating our world and the diversity in it - maybe it will be through our food demonstra-

In May, we’re bringing you a new exhibit, F orts!It is an addition to our already robust options for imaginative play in the Museum. There is a special element of childhood that is really 85 percent imagination and 15 percent reality and that reality is just enough setting and ample “tools” to fuel play all day. Glazer Children’s Museum plays into this creative curiosity, this wonderment, by offering a host of areas for pretend play, from our Vet Clinic and Fire Station to our Cafe and Publix Grocery Store. Kids can play a variety of roles and try on adulthood by working at a hospital or landscaping and gardening around the house. To build on this construction of “my own space,” we’re bringing you a living room full of blankets, pillows and furniture where your little one can build a creation colossal or cozy. Enjoy Forts! BE A MATH WIZ

Over the past few months, we’ve been playing a lot with math concepts, from our Math + Art + Bots pop-up and Pi Day but also highlighting more math in our Grocery Store, Cafe and in our school workshops. We also partnered with Bedtime Math to prototype new exhibits on

math and are preparing for a new curriculum for schools this fall with robotics. R ecent research from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Street tells us that preschool math skills are a more consistent predictor of later academic achievement that either reading or attention skills. Therefore, you’ll see Glazer Children’s Museum continue to escalate its work in math into the future for kids of all ages. Case in point: W e’re bringing a 5,000 square-foot blockbuster traveling exhibition, Math Alive! to the museum starting Memorial Day weekend. I t’s a don’t-miss exploration of how math touches our lives, from robotics to fashion, video games to snowboarding. Experts in math careers will navigate you through this exhibit which is a wonderful opportunity, especially for your 7-12 year olds. Prepare your child

for childcare

here are more than 95,000 children aged birth to 4 in Hillsborough County. The majority of these children spend time in some sort of care outside their home on a daily basis. Choosing that care situation is one of the most important decisions parents will make in their young child’s life. It can also be one of the most emotional and stressful for both the child and parents. Moving your child to a childcare center or family childcare home presents a set of potential adjustment challenges. Not only is your child going to be with a new care giver, but he or she is in an entirely new environment.

DISCUSS YOUR CHILD CARE’S ROUTINES FOR TRANSITIONING CHILDREN with the child’s new

teachers and director. Child care centers may have very different philosophies about how to handle the first weeks. Some may prefer that parents spend the first days with their child, others may ask that parents give a quick kiss and leave immediately, letting the teachers handle settling in for the day. Be sure that your philosophies align with the child care facility that you have chosen for your child and family.

There are some things parents can do to minimize the anxiety and tears of the first day in child care:

VISIT THE CHILDCARE FACILITY WITH YOUR CHILD.

The Coalition customarily encourages parents to visit potential care facilities, which is great. But once a parent has decided on a facility, they should take their child there to visit, show them the toys and introduce them a few times to their teacher. Do at least a couple of these “trial runs.”

TALK ABOUT SCHOOL AT HOME BEFORE THE TRANSITION, no

matter what the age of your child. Read books about children who are starting preschool. Some of our favorites are: “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn, “I Love You All Day Long” by Francesca Rusackas, and “Llama Llama Misses Mama” by Anna Dewdney. Talk about how much fun school is and the wonderful things that will happen at school, and even play “pretend school.”

GIVE YOUR CHILD EXPERIENCES WITH CARETAKERS outside the

family and outside your home long before thinking about childcare. For instance, if your child has loved being with babysitters or their grandparents, but only at home, you may have some issues. Your child’s enthusiasm for new people may not necessarily transfer to a childcare setting, and they may be overwhelmed by a totally new environment.

EXPECT SOME CHANGES IN YOUR CHILD. While they are getting used

to their new routine and schedule, your child may be clingy, sad or out of sorts. Research shows that this is normal for many children because kids’ stress hormones actually elevate during this transition period, although it leaves no lasting damage.

CONFRONT YOUR OWN FEELINGS ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S STARTING CHILDCARE. It’s normal for parents

to feel guilty and anxious, but it’s important not to communicate this to your child. Talk about how you’re feeling with your partner, spouse or a friend, and expect that you’ll even have an emotional reaction when your child starts to like child care and forms attachments to their caregivers.

Be very patient with yourself and your child and start the process as early as possible before you need to start work or other commitments. Depending on the child, the transition process may take a couple of months before a child feels comfortable in a childcare setting.

ndia Hicks is a name you may hear more frequently around town as her lifestyle brand of affordable luxury products makes its way into the homes of your friends and neighbors. The former model and descendent of British and design royalty (her godfather is Prince Charles) launched her brand in 2015, partnering with women around the world, whom she calls Ambassadors, to sell her products as independent consultants. The mother of 5 calls Harbour Island in the Bahamas home and says her children have been incredibly supportive as she helps women find the 'second chapter' in their lives. She recently visited South Tampa to meet with Ambassadors like Angier Miller and Susannah Matthews (pictured with India), and to connect with those who are fans of her brand and even the curious, like us, who simply wanted to learn more about her fascinating story.

TELL US ABOUT THE INDIA HICKS BRAND--WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS? When designing the

IH collections I draw on a variety of inspirations. Living on a tiny island in the Bahamas for the past 20 years, I find inspiration every day, whether running on the pink sand beaches or stopping to admire the Wild Spiderlily – a robust white flower that blooms in the sand and withstands the fiercest of hurricanes. That particular scent

inspired my first fragrance for the brand and an accompanying Bath & Body Collection. There is a great deal of travel-inspired pieces, as I am always on the road promoting the IH business across the USA, which then makes me start to think about the practical needs of modern women, which then takes me back my life in England and a certain sartorial sensibility that is inherent to my upbringing.

WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO TAKE THE ROUTE OF HIRING INDEPENDENT CONSULTANTS TO PROMOTE AND SELL YOUR BRAND? Knowing I wanted to launch a lifestyle brand, it was suggested to me by my partners that we should look at selling back in the heart of the home, not through shops and boutiques but back around the kitchen table. That was not a route that had ever occurred to me –but when I began to dig a little deeper, I suddenly felt that there was a huge opportunity here, a white space that could be filled. No one was telling a lifestyle story, no one was concentrating on affordable luxury, and no one was addressing a vast group of smart savvy women who had once had successful careers but had given it up in order to raise their children. I met with several of my own girlfriends who were frustrated by the fact that they had given up careers to raise a family – which they had found extremely rewarding, of course – but now with their chil-

dren slightly older, they wanted to do something again with their lives, something meaningful, but they didn’t want to invest their own personal capital or write a business model. They didn’t want to have to have the endless sleepless nights of creating a start-up. I also found there were many young mothers with newborn babies or toddlers still at home. They too were looking for a new career, but something that meant they could work from home, be a hands-on mother and work their own hours. So, the two came together at the same moment: the idea of direct sales or person-to-person sales or whatever we want to call this, and recognizing that there was an audience looking for something entrepreneurial. It was rather like the perfect storm. And now I’m here, and I couldn’t think of myself in any other place.

oms of South Tampa is more than a playgroup. It is a group of women who come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are stay-at-home moms and others work full-time, but they are all committed to making a difference in our community, whether by boosting each other or helping families struggling to make ends meet.

The last few months have been busy for the Moms of South Tampa (MOST). Sure, some of it was play—playgroups were active with play date activities and Moms Nights Out—but a lot of it was educational as well. More than 120 moms participated in a one-hour Facebook Live Q&A session with a sleep consultant, and 22 people participated in a 3-day First-Aid/ CPR training course, walking away with not just an official certification, but with peace of mind that they’d be prepared in the event of an emergency. group hosted an amazing St. Patrick's Day party with food, activities and lots of fun. Most recently, the group collected more than 4,000 diapers to donate to The Spring of Tampa Bay as part of MOST’s first 2017 service project. WHAT IS ISTROLL? iStroll is a workout, a social network for moms and dads and a playgroup for young children. We're a group of parents with similar interests and with children of similar ages who benefit from combining our workout, social time and children's playtime. Essentially we are going to be doing the workout outside anyway, so if we have the opportunity to do the workout and an activity after, we'll go to or near the local business, do the workout and follow up class with the local business event. A mother’s work is never done, but her professional appearance should always be on point. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and when you’re representing your business, it’s crucial to make it a favorable and memorable one. Whether you work from home or outside of the home, you may need to network with other professionals in order to grow your business. Networking events are great for meeting new faces and making valuable connections. I believe the best way to stand apart from the crowd is by first “wowing” them with your personal style, and then closing the deal with your personality. You want your overall presence to say, “I’m confident and professional” and leave a positive lasting impression that makes people remember YOU when the time comes and your services are needed. The same theory holds true for head shots: Draw them in with your smiling eyes and be sure to attend to the details.

HERE ARE A FEW HELPFUL GUIDELINES FOR WHAT TO WEAR TO A PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING EVENT: Regardless of what you do for a living, be sure you present yourself as a lady from head to toe. Think Grace Kelly. Even if your job does not require you to look professional, remember that you need to step up your style game for these opportunities; you never know who you’ll meet. I’m a dress gal, but on occasion I’ve been known to rock a suit. If suits are your flavor, be sure the fit is perfection! Nothing kills a first-impression like an ill-fitting ensemble. Get to know a good tailor and make sure your pieces fit like a glove. Don’t go too heavy on the make-up. Professional networking events are usually during the day so remember, you’re not going to a cocktail party. Keep the eyeshadow shades out of the bold palette zone and if your look requires a red lip, go more Taylor Swift and less Rocky Horror. Statement jewelry is great for getting noticed; just make sure you don’t go too far towards evening glam with your pieces. Steer clear of chandelier earrings and gaudy costume necklaces with too much bling.

Think of your headshot as your Director of First Impressions. She says, “Hello. It’s so nice to meet you. How can I help you today?” Remember, your headshot should be styled in a way that relates to your industry. Above all, make sure you hire a pro, both for styling and for photography! Never take a selfie in the driver’s seat of your car and post that as your headshot!

Southerndoe was born from a conversation with her husband, Justin, who replied to her lament at the lack of great outdoor apparel for women and girls with “Why don’t you make one?” Kristen took the idea and ran with it, developing a successful brand that is carried in more than 100 stores in 16 states and winning the inaugural Young Entrepreneur Program award.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE MESSY MA? When Ella June was only 4 days old, I had to go back to work. Southerndoe, a clothing company I launched back in 2013, had just received an incredible order from Bealls Department Stores. It was an amazing opportunity and although I knew it would be tough to leave her, I kissed my newborn and headed into work. During one of my 3 a.m. feedings, running on about two hours of sleep and covered with spit-up, I realized that the sooner I embraced the tired, the imperfect, the messy house and the unwashed hair, the happier we would all be. When both Ella June and I finally fell back to sleep, I had a dream that I began making tees that were super soft with encouraging messages and girls were telling me how happy these tees made them. When I woke up, I started drawing out ideas for my second brand: Messy Ma.

Make a symptom diary. When did it start? How long does it last? Does the pain come and go? As much information as you can give your doctor will help him or her in making a diagnosis.

Take a copy of your doctor's card. You will most likely remember your doctor’s name, but in case you have a brain block, you will have it on you!

Q: How can I make the most out of a visit to my doctor's office? Here are eight of my top tips to remember.

Write your questions down. I recommend you write them in order of importance. Your doctor will do their best to address all of your concerns, but make sure the ones that are the most important to you get addressed. This also helps you prepare for your appointment.

Bring in your personal health record. I suggest everyone carry with them a handwritten or electronic copy of their personal health record. It should include your medical history (asthma, heart attack), what surgeries you have had (all are important), the medications you take (prescribed, over the counter and any vitamins or supplements), and your allergies (such as latex or any medications).

Bring someone with you to your appointment. It is important to have someone with you to not only support you emotionally, but to also be an extra set of ears to hear what your doctor tells you. Ideally, they should take notes so that you can ensure you have heard everything your doctor told you.

Make sure it’s the right fit. At the end of the day, what is most important is that you have had all of your questions answered, you feel better, and you feel that your doctor is looking out for your best interests.

Determine what you want out of the appointment. Is this a well visit? Do you need a diagnosis? Do you want to hear other options for treatment? Prognosis?

Be honest! We are not here to judge, but doctors need to know as much information as possible to make an accurate diagnosis. There is not much that we have not seen or heard before.

DEALING WITH Alzheimer's by Dr. Faizi Ahmed

any people know someone who has been affected by Alzheimer’s. It is a terrible disease to watch unfold in front of your eyes, and even tougher feeling as though there is nothing you can do to stop it. This disease changes the person you knew into a shell. It takes a toll on both the person affected and their family. From 2014 to 2016, Dr. Faizi Ahmed told numerous families that there was nothing that could be done, that their disease was going to progress, and that affairs should be put in order. In 2014, he had heard of cases that had been reversed by Dr. Dale Bredesen in California but ignored them. Dr. Ahmed was working in one of the world’s best Alzheimer’s centers at the time and was convinced it couldn’t be reversed. In 2016, Dr. Ahmed saw another headline about Dr. Bredesen and decided to look further into it. Dr. Bredesen’s study revealed that 10 people who developed Alzheimer’s dementia were, for the most part, able to reverse their disease. His treatment, although far from traditional, seemed feasible. After having had some correspondence with Dr. Bredesen, Dr. Ahmed went to his physician’s training program at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in California. He then realized he had stumbled on to an actual treatment for Alzheimer’s dementia. The treatment is called MEND, but is also known as the Bredesen Protocol. Most people with Alzheimer’s disease have a genetic predisposition. Although these Alzheimer’s genes won’t guarantee that someone will develop it, the most common gene mutation, ApoE4, is present in the more than half of people with Alzheimer’s. This gene is directly involved in forming the protein amyloid-beta, which causes the brain pathology known as Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Bredesen and his team at the Buck Institute have found that this gene can be redirected. It can be made to form another protein, so that amyloid-beta is not formed. They found that it is possible to shift the pathway, and in turn, reverse the disease. Dr. Ahmed has brought the Bredesen Protocol to Tampa with his clinic, Tampa Neuropsychiatry. While his main treatment is Alzheimer’s dementia, he also treats depression, anxiety, the complications of brain injuries and more. So when is the best time to seek treatment? Dr. Ahmed suggests coming in as soon as you notice any type of memory problem. Extensive testing can determine whether or not the problem derives from Alzheimer’s. The sooner the disease is caught, the better chance there is to stop the disease

and reach recovery. When the memory problem starts causing difficulty with functioning, it becomes harder to treat. Mild Alzheimer’s, in which there is mild dysfunction as a result of the memory problems, has a better chance of being reversed than more severe cases. “There are several things that we can do on a day-to-day basis to ensure that our genes don’t get the best of us. For one, we need to clean up our diets. And when I say clean up I actually mean completely overhauling our diets. People who have been successful with the protocol have been able to stop eating processed foods, including bread and rice. Diets should consist of mostly vegetables, some fruit and some meat. Another necessary component of the program is vigorous exercise about 5-6 days per week for about 45 minutes at a time. It is well known that exercise causes an increase in brain growth factors.” Dr. Ahmed explains that the most significant component of the program is a major lifestyle change for patients, and subsequently their families.

"Relationships with our mothers can be quite tricky and complex and we all handle them in different ways."

It’s quite interesting how life can impact relationships. The dynamics of a mother and daughter relationship change as we age. Just like the story from my friend, we may go through stages of not getting along, to not being able to get along without each other. Much like a marriage, it takes a lot of work, communication and even compromise at times to maintain

a healthy adult bond with our mothers or daughters. Here are a few tips I can offer as a professional, and even a few of my own that I’ve learned along the way from my relationship with my mother:

ADVICE

This tip is more for the moms. As a mother, you want to always give advice so your daughter doesn’t have to go through any unnecessary stress or pain. But give advice or opinions only when asked.

Respect that your daughter is an adult and can make adult decisions on her own without your input. If you are continuously giving advice and opinions when she doesn’t want or need them, you run the risk of her never coming to you, even when she might need you the most. What you might not realize is that by constantly giving unsolicited advice, you may be unknowingly sending your daughter a message that you don’t believe she is capable of figuring out her life on her own.

Find the best way to communicate with each other. If Mom prefers to communicate in person or on the phone, but daughter prefers to text, learn to compromise so that both of you feel comfortable in the way you communicate. Let your daughter know that you need to hear her voice occasionally, but you’re fine to text when she wants to say hello or ask a question. Or let your Mom know that you’re busy and texting helps you manage your time better. The compromise helps both of you feel comfortable in your communication methods.

CREATE SPECIAL MOMENTS

Make a point to spend time together. Remember the saying that it’s not the quantity as much as it is the quality. Life is busy so recognize it for what it is and make it a priority to create special moments to be with each other. Maybe you don’t live close to each other, or maybe life is just that busy. Make time to schedule lunch, dinner, coffee, a vacation or even phone time to just be with each other.

There are times when generation gaps can cause havoc on relationships between a parent and a child. Keeping an open mind and fostering a non-judgmental atmosphere on both sides will go a long way in building a healthy relationship between mother and daughter. Respect, learning to say you’re sorry, and a lot of love is what builds and maintains that bond!

BOUNDARIES

Creating boundaries is important in any relationship, especially in those where the parties tend to become enmeshed, where roles are not clearly defined or when emotions run high. Knowing that certain times or topics are off limits for one or both of you can be helpful. Make a concerted effort to consider how your personal identity is different from your mother’s or your daughter’s and how you can occupy that role without stepping on the other’s toes.

EXPECTATIONS

You’re both adults and have lives of your own. Don’t create unrealistic expectations that either of you will always be available. Daughters, your mom has raised her kids and she is enjoying her life. Support her decisions to be active or do things that don’t always include you. And mothers, you remember what it was like to be a young married mom with kids and trying to work too or building a career and living your life. Their lives are busy and your daughter may not always have time to spend with you when you ask. Instead, create realistic expectations around what you need and expect from each other and agree to communicate when those expectations start to get a little gray.

COMMUNICATE

Learn the best ways to communicate with each other. One of the complaints I hear the most from mothers is that, “My daughter never calls me.”

Common kiddie ailments and when they call for a trip to the doctor By Anu Varma Panchal

Cuts, sprains and itchy bug bites are par for the course when it comes to raising little ones. But we’ve all read those frightening headlines about the innocuous cut that turned into a raging infection that led to limb amputation, or the crazy virus that caused an overnight personality change. When’s a problem a real problem, and when are we just overreacting? We asked the experts, namely, Dr. Timothy Hendrix, M.D., medical director of Florida Hopital Centra Care. Centra Care is a network of more than 30 urgent care facilities in the Orlando and Tampa Bay areas where physicians treat a plethora of minor illnesses and emergencies. Hendrix, who’s reassured and cured panicked parents and bawling patients for more than 20 years, demystifies some of our biggest worries.

BURNS

Ever forgotten a curling iron on the bathroom counter and heard a howl a few minutes later? A child sustaining a burn is almost more painful for the parents, but these too can be worse than they seem. Wash the burn with soap and water, apply cool compresses (not an ice pack) or place the burned area under cool running water. Then apply a burn ointment and wrap the wound in sterile bandages. Keep it clean and dry and this will greatly reduce scarring.

DIARRHEA & VOMITING

The biggest risk is dehydration. Don’t use anti-diarrheals or emetics for kids. Use a rehydration solution such as Pedialyte. The cause is generally viral, in which case the symptoms will pass in a day or two, says Hendrix. See a doctor if: •The child can’t keep fluid down •Is running a fever •Is unusually lethargic •Has blood in their vomit or stool.

See a doctor or visit urgent care if: •The burn is to the hands, feet or face. Scarring in these parts can thicken tissue and reduce the range of motion later. •If the burn covers a larger area than the child’s palm.

FALLS

When babies and toddlers fall and bang their heads on hard surfaces, it’s easy to panic. Hendrix says that immediate cry is actually a good thing and a normal reaction. Put ice on the banged area and keep an eye on the baby. Signs that a trip to the doctor might be warranted include irritability, excessive crying, vomiting and sleepiness. If there’s a loss of consciousness, call 911.

BLOOD

Seeing your little one covered in blood can make the strongest parent feel faint. Sometimes, a Band -Aid and kiss will do the trick, but the depth and severity of a wound are tough for the untrained eye to gauge. If the wound is wide, jagged, deep or gaping, on the face or won’t stop bleeding, see your doctor.

HEAT EXHAUSTION

When kids play in direct sunlight, not only are they getting warmed up by the sun, their metabolism causes more heat to build up in their body. When the increase in body temperature hits 103 degrees, the child is a dangerous step closer to heat stroke. If you notice your child getting flushed, red and sweaty and complaining of light headedness or nausea, take them into shade or air conditioning and give them water or a sports drink.

BROKEN TOOTH

See a dentist immediately. Contrary to popular opinion that a baby tooth can be sacrificed, the tooth still needs to be stabilized to protect the adult tooth. Placing the broken tooth in milk or saliva until the dentist visit is a good idea.

FEVERS

Hendrix advises parents to get a good thermometer and not rely on the old hand-on-forehead reading; just because a child looks flushed doesn’t mean he is running a temperature. If temps rises above the average of 98.6 degrees, keep him comfortable, give him lots of fluids and Tylenol or Motrin. Cooling down is good, but skip the tepid bath; this can actually cause a chill. Head to the doctor if: •Any infant younger than 3 months with a temperature higher than 100 degrees •An infant 3-36 months old or younger with a fever greater than 102 degrees •A child who has a fever and is unusually lethargic, unable to maintain eye contact, vomiting, showing difficult breathing or is inconsolable •Any child or adult who develops a fever with a rash. Combined with a rash, a fever could be a symptom of something more serious, such as measles, roseola or the rare Fifth Disease. •Any age with a temperature of 104 degrees and above

SWALLOWING THINGS

Ah, that sinking feeling you feel when you find your toddler with a hand in the change jar and a guilty look on her face. Some little ones will put anything in their mouth—candy, paper clips, coins, medicines—and some of these things can do real harm. Don’t wait for it to come out on the other side; take them to a doctor for an X-ray. Also, keep medicines locked up and away from little hands. If you suspect they’ve swallowed grandma’s pills, call poison control at 800-222-1222.

BROKEN BONES

Differentiating between sprains, twisted ankles and broken bones is best left to the experts. “If you can move it, that does NOT mean it’s not broken,” says Hendrix. Urgent care facilities such as Centra Care have onsite facilities to X-ray, diagnose, splint and stabilize fractures.

FIRST AID KIT ESSENTIALS

Despite all the new technology out there, Hendrix says the first line of defense is the oldest: water. Wash off blood, submerge burns, flush eyes, irrigate to remove debris and chemicals, and wash lacerations. Plain tap water and soap will do at least the first part of any first aid job just fine. But the following will help also. Sterile bandage Gauze Pads Tweezers Band-Aids Paper tape Ace wrap Ziploc bags and ice cubes to make ice packs Thermometer

INSECT BITES

Most insect bites from mosquitoes and other such bugs can be fixed with an ice pack or Benadryl or topical hydrocortisone to control the itching. Stung by a jellyfish? Submerge the bite in 110-degree water for 30 minutes. Hendrix explains that this is not hot enough to burn you, but warm enough to deactivate the venom in any sting from ocean life. However, some children can suffer a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction if stung by a bee or a fire ant. Watch for swelling or difficulty breathing, and immediately call 911 if these symptoms occur.

Seeing Europe with Kids | Family Fun

Three kid-friendly European cities for the perfect summer vacation As a traveling mommy, one of my favorite places to take the kids is Europe. And my favorite time of year to go is Mid-May or June for three reasons: The tickets are cheaper, you beat the summer heat and it’s less crowded. My husband and I have traveled with our two kids to Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, England, Germany, France, Austria and Ireland. And we are impressed with how many kid-friendly cities we've found along the way. Here are a few of our favorite places for the kids.

BARCELONA, SPAIN

Barcelona is a beautiful city filled with art and culture, but it's also filled with fun unique places for the kids. Imagine an old-timey amusement park built in 1889 that's at the top of a mountain. The Tibidabo Amusement Park is filled with fun rides and games your kids will love. It has everything from Lego rooms for the little ones to a Ferris wheel with amazing views and a roller coaster that will literally take you off the side of the mountain. Another favorite stop is Park Guell, which is probably the most peaceful, whimsical park you'll ever take your kids to where you'll find artists painting. Architect Antonio Gaudi designed this beautiful park in 1890, and you'll still find his vibrant colored tiles everywhere from benches to a friendly mosaic dragon. Take a picnic to enjoy there. Another fun stop is L ‘Aquarium Barcelona, where your kids can see everything from sharks to penguins. Keep in mind that these places are just a bonus to the traditional sightseeing you can do with the kids: Stroll La Rambla with its unique street performers and visit La Sagrada Familia, the breathtaking church that was Gaudi's biggest project, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been under construction for more than a century.

DUBLIN, IRELAND

Castles, fields of green, rainbows and friendly people—what’s not to love about Ireland? In the warm summer months, I would recommend taking the kids to so many beautiful places, from the Cliffs of Moher to Killarney National Park and Blarney Stone. Dublin by far has the most activities for the kids. We love going to Dublin Zoo! It's the largest zoo in Ireland with more than 400 animals. St. Stephen's Green Park is a historical park and garden in the heart of Dublin. The kids will enjoy feeding ducks, strolling through the park and listening to street musicians. Nearby, you'll also find Grafton Street known for its shopping and eclectic street performers and musicians. If they like Irish dancing, there are several places that offer shows that are kid friendly. Don't forget to visit Dublin Castle and take the kids to eat fish and chips at the famous Leo Burdocks.

THE GREEK ISLANDS

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach getaway, I recommend the Greek Islands. The Greeks love children and really put kids first when it comes to daily life. So no need to worry if your child starts screaming during dinner; the locals are more likely to try and help you than give you a look. There are so many islands in Greece to visit, but my favorite is Santorini. It's magical and romantic with stunning views you won't find anywhere else in the world. The only drawback for taking kids is the thousands of steps they'll have to climb. The older kids might be ok with that but if you have younger kids, I recommend the island of Rhodes. The island has spectacular beaches to enjoy all day long, but it also has lots of interesting places to explore. The Acropolis of Lindos has incredible views. The climb to the top can be a little tough for small ones, but they can take a donkey ride down. You can explore Rhodes town which is a medieval city and the Valley of the Butterflies, which is a beautiful nature spot with thousands of butterflies. The Island of Rhodes is just one of many islands where you'll hear the laughter of children playing on the beaches throughout the summer.

s we all continue on our journey through parenthood, it is so important that we support each other and share stories and ideas which is why we love collaborating with other local parenting bloggers. In celebration of Mother’s Day, we wanted to learn more from our friend and cover model, Sheriss Crosskey, founder of Tampa Bay Moms Blog, about what inspires her and why she thinks it’s so important we connect with other moms.

While searching for tips and resources on “mommy-ing” and raising a toddler who was addicted to her pacifier, I came across Dallas Moms Blog, which is a part of the City Moms Blog Network. As a result, I found myself wondering if we had something similar in Tampa Bay that I could add to my bookmarked internet resources. It turns out we did not, so I contacted the City Moms Blog Network and the rest (as they say) is history. I have learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of when I take a chance and commit to something. Through this opportunity, I'm connecting moms to information and parenting perspectives unique to the Tampa Bay area. I get to create an impact on the women in our community, while doing something that I love—being a mom. When I started Tampa Bay Moms Blog four years ago, I really didn’t understand how it was going to change my life! I am now a small business owner who gets to work with so many amazing women from across the nation and in the Tampa Bay area. I have become friends with moms in all walks of life (including the moms of Tampa Bay Parenting), many of whom I never would have met had it not been for TBMB. I also get to work closely with local businesses that I already love. I've heard stories that absolutely take my breath away. By starting a locally focused parenting website in my city, doors were opened that I never even knew existed.
