FEEDING TAMPA BAY
the arena, spending my days finding better ways to feed people. I love the Tampa Bay area. Cruising up Gulf Boulevard with my windows down and sunroof open, the Caribbean Grouper Sandwich at Frenchy’s Rockaway, kayaking along the Dunedin Causeway, Joto fingers and pepperoni pizza after a ballgame, the view from the Vinoy’s poolside bar, margaritas and tacos at Red Mesa Cantina, teeing off at Westchase and beating the line to the counter at Poppa’s Barbecue … all of it brings me joy. Food, beautiful outdoor spaces, endless activities and wonderful people make our region a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I loved growing up here. I feel blessed to be able to provide the same to my three boys. In 2011, our growing family made a couple of very important decisions. We decided to move back to Tampa Bay, and I left my career in Youth Ministry. My father, my hero, had passed away the previous Thanksgiving. My wife Erin and I had two young boys at home. With all the change in our lives, we made the call to come back to Tampa Bay

to be near my mom, to restart my career, and to put down roots. The last eight years have given our family all we could ask for, and all we could handle. From life-saving treatment provided by Clearwater Fire & Rescue and an amazing surgical team at All Children’s Hospital, to countless triumphs and failures on ball fields across the bay, to wonderful friends, teachers, neighbors and co-workers, we know we are in the right place. Tampa Bay is home. And I sit back and enjoy it all. My role is to strive every day to provide an example of service to God, family and community. I have chosen to step into the arena, spending my days finding better ways to feed people, and working with incredible businesses, organizations and individuals across Tampa Bay to ensure that none of our neighbors go hungry. Because in Tampa Bay, there is no “them” and “us.” There is only us. I believe that to the core of my being. We all have dignity and worth. No choice, no action, no decision can take that away. And we need each other. I am fortunate to be in a field where I can act on that belief each day. Inside, you can read more about how exactly our team at Feeding Tampa Bay honors all by working to build a community where no one goes hungry.

MEET
DELILAH DAWSON
SHE’S THE TAMPA MOM AND BESTSELLING AUTHOR WHOSE NOVELS ARE BASED ON THE NEW STAR WARS: GALAXY’S EDGE AT DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS
By Laura Byrne
Q:
We met New York Times bestselling author and mom of two Delilah Dawson during the grand opening celebration of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in August. It was a big day for her, releasing her latest novel based on the new land and once again reconnecting with the powerful super spy brought to life in her Star Wars novels, Vi Moradi. We instantly knew we needed to know more to share her inspiring story with you.
Q:
How did you get your start as an author?
A:
I have an art degree and worked in non-profit arts centers. When I was 31, my 9-month-old son stopped sleeping, and so did I. My husband Craig suggested I write a book so I’d have something to do while staying home with two young children. My brain was so broken that I said, “Sure! Why not?” In three months, I had a manuscript, within six months, a literary agent, and in a year, my first book deal with Simon & Schuster. Craig and I are still married, and my son Rex is 10. My daughter, Rhys, is 13.
Your most recent novel is an (unofficial) sequel. Tell us more about your books and your character Vi Moradi.
A:
I was so delighted when we received the news that Vi, first appearing in my novel “Phasma,” would be part of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Vi’s story continues in “Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire,” and although reading “Phasma” first will inform the relationship between Vi and Archex, you definitely don’t have to read any other Star Wars books to enjoy “Black Spire” and learn the history behind what you’ll see at Black Spire Outpost. Vi is Leia’s best spy, dedicated to fighting the First Order. She’s tough but compassionate, snarky and sarcastic but optimistic, and she firmly believes that everyone has gifts that can help the galaxy become a better place.
Q:
How did you get involved with the Star Wars brand?
A:
I’ve always been a huge Star Wars fan, so when I saw my friends Chuck Wendig and Kevin Hearne writing Star Wars, I asked my agent to send some of my books to the editors at Del Rey. My first project was a novella called “The Perfect Weapon” that came out right before “The Force Awakens.”
Q: A:
To see Vi and Batuu/Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge come to life... what was that like for you?
Incredible! I liken it to how Big Bird knew about Snuffleupagus for years, but the rest of Sesame Street finally got to meet him one day and understood that he was real. Vi is my Snuffie! I love watching Vi draw kids into the story at Galaxy’s Edge, and I got to enjoy the fun, too. Vi asked me to distract some stormtroopers so she could escape, and when I was successful, she inducted me into the Resistance. If you say, “Ignite the spark,” to her, she’ll know you can be trusted!

Q: A:
What are your favorite things at Walt Disney World?
We love staying at the Disney hotels, especially when we can get a good deal the night before for a surprise visit. We always schedule a character breakfast—our favorite one is at 1900 Park Fare with Pooh, Piglet and Tigger, and I’m a big fan of the gluten-free waffles. My son loves thrill rides like Space Mountain and Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, my daughter loves the chill rides like The Haunted Mansion, and my husband and I love Avatar Flight of Passage in the Pandora section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We all love the Disney restaurants, especially Be Our Guest for breakfast in the Beast’s parlor and lunch at Jungle Skipper Cantina. We have mastered the Magic Band system and can usually get in three rides we love before dinner.
See more of Delilah's books on her website whimsydark.com
Q: A:
Q: A:
Our favorite place is Advent Health Center Ice. My daughter takes figure skating lessons there, and my son and I have our own ice skates and love to join her at public skate sessions. We’re members at ZooTampa and especially love the decorations at Halloween and Christmas, and we get a lot of mileage out of our season passes at Busch Gardens and Adventure Island Water Park. We’re clearly all about adventure!
What are your family’s favorite things to do at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios?
TBPM: What was it like to work on this project? BRIANNA: It’s amazing. We wanted to create a world that felt so authentically Star Wars, but a place we hadn’t seen before, so we made sure we piled in all of these authentic-to-Star-Wars elements. I’ve always loved recreating authentic places. I came from a background of scenic paints and colors so getting to do this with all of the amazing textures and treatments, that’s been a dream come true.

Q: A:
What is your advice to kids out there who want to be writers/authors when they grow up? What helped you along the way?
Well, for one thing, you can start any time. You’re never too old or young to write a book! I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer until I was 31. The trick to writing is to stop judging your work. Don’t go back and read your last paragraph and notice everything that’s wrong with it; write the entire draft and *then* look at it critically and fix it. I tell myself that all first drafts are garbage. If you read Stephen King’s book “On Writing,” you can even see his first drafts, which are not the same as what you see in finished books. That made a big difference for me. I also don’t start writing until I know the main character, the beginning, the inciting incident where everything changes, the main conflict, the climax and the ending. If I don’t know those signpost moments, I can’t start writing—it’s like going on vacation with no idea where you want to end up. I always need to keep my characters aiming for that endpoint.
TBPM: What would you tell a child who inspires to follow in your footsteps as an art director or artist? BRIANNA: Keep creating. Keep drawing. Keep learning math and science. All of these things came together to create this world. I got to bring my dad recently. He is one of those old school Star Wars fans. The moment he saw the Millennium Falcon, it took his breath away and he was just so proud and so happy and excited. I think everyone here is going to feel something like that. TBPM: What’s your advice for families visiting Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for the first time? BRIANNA: Take your time. There’s a lot of detail, a lot of layers, a lot of stories. You can hear different conversations happening around you. There are different smells. Take time to absorb the atmosphere. NEW RIDE COMING SOON Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opens Dec. 5 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Everything! Just being there is such a treat. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I never thought I’d be able to walk through such an immersive world. I love Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run, of course— my favorite seat is the pilot’s seat so I can take the ol’ hunk of junk to hyperspeed. I love the food, from blue and green milk to Kat Saka’s popcorn to fried Endorian Tip-Yip at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. I love the market and building a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop was an incredible and moving experience. It’s the details that really speak to me— hacking droids with the Play Disney Parks app, talking to the Batuu residents about their thoughts on the Resistance and First Order, and reading the signs in Aurebesh—which I taught myself to read just to make my visits to Galaxy’s Edge more real. And don’t forget to count the porg nests in the Millennium Falcon!
THE TAMPA BAY CONNECTIONS KEEP COMING. Brianna Pfost, one of the art directors who created Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, grew up in Tampa!

Today’s mother may observe cultural expectations, but her family may not sit down for dinner together every night because she is running three restaurants with 200 employees. Having become a mother at the age of 15, she worked tirelessly to ensure her opportunities in life were not short changed by society's views on teen pregnancy. Precourt is the founder and managing director of SHE Advisors, a Fractional (& Female) Execute Firm that deploys tenured female executives into start-up, mid-size and enterprise companies looking to organize, optimize and scale. Additionally, Precourt is raising capital for her medtech startup, KUUR Health, a membershipbased primary care provider dedicated to serving people, not insurance providers, and to bringing a high-touch and high-tech approach to primary care. “You can’t do it all; that’s a myth,” she says. “You CAN do all the important stuff, and you must prioritize and organize. Mom guilt is a real thing and must be managed, just as we would our time. Remember you are enough, and the most important role of a mom is to raise kind children.”

We feed people TAKING CARE OF HEARTS, MINDS AND BODIES AT FEEDING TAMPA BAY By Matt Spence
T
he front door hasn’t even closed yet and three sets of feet can be heard running my direction. There is no calm, Mr. Rogers-esque moment of shoe removal before the tidal wave of questions and stories (mostly about food) erupt from the Spence boys. After the first few moments of mayhem, things settle down a bit. Most nights, we eat dinner together and talk. Stories revolve around recess and lunch, and occasionally we can even get an academic highlight thrown in with enough prompting. It is easy to get them going. Eventually, the spotlight turns in my direction.

Usually it is the youngest, Nolan, who asks. Through the years, I have answered with a comment about a nonprofit I visited, a person I talked with, or a project I learned about or helped to grow. But to seven, nine and 12-year-old boys, those moments do not really resonate. It is tough to share the process of building social services responses to community issues without getting into the weeds or beyond the point that connected with their daily lives. Most times, my
response did not really impact young, energetic, blessed and thankfully carefree boys. I have spent my professional career in ministry, education and philanthropy – contributing to interesting projects and helping people help others. I have enjoyed every step, but something has been missing. There was always a sense of value and purpose in my answer to Nolan, but it was pretty tough for kids in elementary school to relate. Eighteen months ago, I joined the team at Feeding Tampa Bay, and the conversation changed. “Dad, what did you do today?”
1 The Spence boys bring friends to volunteer at the Feeding Tampa Bay warehouse in Tampa. 2 Nolan Spence in the Feeding Tampa Bay pantry.
“I FED PEOPLE.”
“Today we opened a school pantry that will help feed hundreds of families. They will now get to eat their favorite meals around their family table, just like us.” Now that, the boys understand. They can picture me going off to work, making sure that children very much like them had family meals. They know how important that time, and that experience, has always been to me. That is a good way for me to spend my day. At Feeding Tampa Bay, there is no confusion about what we do or why we exist. We feed people. There is no hesitation when you ask any one of our nearly 100 employees what we do each day. We feed people. And now I’m proud to give that answer every single day when Nolan asks. The numbers are staggering, almost too big to comprehend. Nearly 650,000 food insecure people live in Tampa Bay, with over 65 million pounds of food shared with the community. We have over 500 partner agencies across 10 counties supporting the hungry and needy in our midst. Our 80,000-square-foot warehouse is bursting at the seams and our 24-truck fleet could be on the road delivering food 24 hours each day. Our army of over 45,000 volunteers and 200 corporate partners stand shoulder to shoulder fighting hunger in Tampa Bay, and yet we are only halfway there. It will take 115 million meals a month to end hunger in Tampa Bay. That’s how many meals we need to provide to ensure that every food insecure individual across West Central Florida has access to the
1 food they need to live a productive, healthy life. So what do I do at Feeding Tampa Bay? I feed people. What do our volunteers do when they come to our warehouse and sort donated food into banana boxes so we can send them out to churches, social service agencies and other community partners? They feed people. What do our truck drivers, forklift operators, volunteer coordinators, inventory managers, fiscal specialists and administrative assistants do when they come to work in the morning? They feed people. And best of all, what does Nolan do when he joins daddy at work on a Saturday morning distributing produce at Trinity Cafe 2? He feeds people too.
BECAUSE NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY.
It is a simple tag line, but it means everything to the team at Feeding Tampa Bay. We take this as our marching order, our guiding principle reminding us of what matters most in our interactions and program decisions. We know, with clarity and at depth, what is important. Why did we merge with Trinity Cafe – a free restaurant with two locations that serves anyone who
2
walks through the door without precondition or prejudice? Because no one should go hungry. Why have we started to build pantries in schools and health care facilities? Because no one should go hungry. Why are we providing career training for individuals with barriers to employment? Because no one should go hungry. Our organization has put a stake in the ground. We want to end hunger in Tampa Bay by 2025. Achieving that goal will not be easy. It will require more food, more friends and more funding. It will require a broad community commitment to the work. We firmly believe we can, and will, do it. How will we get 115 million meals into the community by 2025? We will need to evolve our methods and partners to make food available at the right times, in the right places for those who need us. We will have to energize our community by providing access to high quality, nutritious food across the entire region. We will have to engage anyone willing to stand beside us, building a social movement committed to the mission. And we will need to empower the neighbors we serve to access resources and embrace opportunities in order to move out of a food line forever. We are building programs that engage children in solving social challenges. We are inviting families into our work through Family Nights at the warehouse. We are always ready for another set of helping hands – no matter how small. So join my family – Matt, Erin, MJ, Luke and Nolan – in the fight to end hunger in Tampa Bay. What do we do? We feed people. Why? Because no one should go hungry.

Create Thankfulness
START A DISCUSSION ABOUT GRATITUDE WITH THESE CRAFTS
O
By Carlynn Arcese
ne of the greatest lessons kiddos can learn is how to be thankful for what they have, but it can be a hard lesson to teach and a hard concept to grasp. Try out one, or all, of these three crafts that focus on gratitude to start a discussion with the whole family on thankfulness and gratitude during this holiday season.
THANKFULNESS PUMPKIN
MATERIALS: Medium-sized pumpkin, black Sharpie (or any color of your choosing)
WHY I LOVE IT: It creates a daily discussion on thankfulness and gratitude. Talking as a family about all the things you’re thankful for creates an environment of gratitude and teaches kiddos to be thankful for all they have.
LEAF CATCHER
FAMILY TREE
INSTRUCTIONS: Starting with a short tail, wrap the yarn around the hoop, crisscrossing in all directions as you go. It’s great to start out with a medium weight yarn in an autumnal color. Wrap your hoop as many times as you want until it starts looking like it can catch some leaves! Cut the yarn and tie it to your starting tail in a knot. Add a second layer of yarn in another autumnal color or weight, repeating the crisscrossing. Print your leaves template on cardstock (or have your kiddos draw their own leaves on colored construction paper), cut them out, and keep a pen nearby. Write down what you’re thankful for or a special memory from the year and place your leaves between the yarn for them to stay put.
INSTRUCTIONS: Print a tree template of your choosing by typing “tree template” into Google, which gives you so many options to choose from. Using your ink pads, have your little ones use their thumbprints to create fall foliage on their tree. Once their tree looks full and autumnal, have them start writing their family members’ names near the leaves. You can start with grandparents, great-grandparents, or any parent you’d like.
MATERIALS: Printable leaves template, one 14-inch embroidery hoop, yarn, card stock
WHY I LOVE IT: This is a great craft for the whole family to do together throughout the month. By Thanksgiving Day, your leaf catcher will be full of leaves and you can read aloud what each family member has written. Plus, it’s colorful, simple and requires few materials!

MATERIALS: Printable tree template; red, orange, yellow ink pads; pen or marker
WHY I LOVE IT: Teaching your kiddos about the members of their family and how everyone is connected is a great way to create togetherness and show them that families come in all different shapes and sizes, and that there are so many family members that love them.
Photo s courtesy Glazer Childrens Museum
INSTRUCTIONS: Start at the top of the pumpkin and write “We are thankful for…” curving it around the stem. Each day, have each family member add one or two things they’re thankful for, writing your list in a spiral around the pumpkin. Start with the important things like family, friends and pets and then add all the fun little things your family is thankful for: cookies, a favorite TV show, sleeping in on weekends. By Thanksgiving Day, your pumpkin will be filled with everything your family is thankful for. Use your finished pumpkin for a table setting decoration or have it on display for your family and guests to see and discuss!

TRADITION
ways to volunteer and give back as a family By Laura Byrne
Giving back is on everyone’s tongues, hearts and minds around the holiday season. While Thanksgiving is a perfect time to think about the importance of giving back, learning to appreciate what they have and to help others in need is a life lesson our children can learn year-round. This is the perfect time of year to choose an organization to help and perhaps begin a new family tradition. Here’s our handy guide of places that you and your family can explore together.

s a father, husband, son, brother and friend I have become intentionally focused on young children and families in need. Many of us have our basic needs met on a daily basis without much trauma or stress, so it can be challenging to place ourselves in other people’s shoes. As the executive director of the Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties, I make daily efforts to model and coach our staff to support and serve our children, their families, our provider community and one another with this in mind. As we move into the holiday season, I will make daily efforts to support local organizations in several different ways. Any random act of kindness can cause a chain reaction that restores our faith in the human spirit. I was in the drive through at Starbucks a few weeks ago and the person in front of me bought my coffee. When I arrived at the window, the employee shared that I was the 16th person in a row to have their drink purchased

I don’t know if you’ve ever been a part of something like the example I am sharing but it warms the heart and provides us with hope when it happens. If we all ask ourselves, how can I pay it forward today and do three nice things for people each day, the world would change for the better very quickly. One of the most impactful things that will occur is our children will begin to prioritize this in their lives. We are all teachers and should use the holiday season as a time to be purposeful for ourselves and our children. We can always find educational moments in our daily lives that provide motivation and purpose. I hope you join me during this time of year and “Pay it Forward” to family, friends, co-workers and people you don’t even know. Together, we can work to make our community a better place.

ext time you find yourself in the madness of rush hour traffic, gridlocked and aggravated on busy South Dale Mabry Boulevard, take a moment to look up. There, in the unlikeliest of places, at the most unexpected of moments, you might just find the sign you’ve been looking for— a message from the universe offering guidance, motivation or insight. The towering billboard outside Ice Cold Air Discount Auto Repair in South Tampa may just speak to you. “We have people who are not even customers stop in all the time to tell us how much the sign meant to them,” says shop owner Ashley Butler. She and her team have been displaying messages on their giant, storefront sign every week for the last 12 years. “We wanted to do something different,” she says. “We didn’t want it to be a place to advertise specials on brakes. We decided we would do something uplifting.” They settled on inspirational quotes. Each week, Butler and store manager, Jay Piniella, scour the internet and social media, along with suggestions from family, friends and customers. At the crack of dawn every Monday ( before the morning
commute) they put up two quotes, one on each side of the sign. “It doesn’t take anything special to put six to seven words up there,” Butler says, “yet it makes a magical difference.” Every week, without fail, they hear from customers for whom the messages struck a chord. Piniella remembers the woman who stopped to photograph the sign and told him she regularly discusses the meaning of the quotes with her husband and children at dinner. Another woman dropped in to say the board was the impetus for a major career change. “I’m very proud of it,” Butler says, her voice cracking; her eyes filling with tears. “For me, impact is a big thing. This is a way we can be a part of the community and give back, not just receive.” So, remember— inspiration is not just derived from church sermons and Ted Talks. It’s not just revealed to us in the solitude of a nature hike or the serenity of a sunset. Signs are everywhere and often appear when and where you least expect. Even amidst the clamor and chaos of traffic, on an auto shop billboard.

Enoughness LEARNING TO BE CONTENT. A GIFT FROM FRANCE.
T By Kristen Manieri
his summer we had the extraordinary experience of spending 10 weeks in France. It’s a glorious country, with a bountiful beauty and classic charm that reaches far outside of Paris’ city limits, stretching across miles of rolling farm land, endless vineyards, protected forests, snow-capped mountains, expansive bike trails, shimmering lakes and golden beaches. Immersed in a single country and culture for so long, one can’t help but begin to notice the things a frenzied, bucket-list-checking tourist cannot. In a way, we didn’t visit for 10 weeks; we lived there for 10 weeks. And the way we were able to settle in afforded us a deeper glimpse into this dignified and graceful country. Of course, food is just the tip of the iceberg and most restaurant experiences precisely lived up to the rumors: delicious, locally-sourced, unhurried. Stay for a while and you too will start to experience France’s near obsession with wine, the way everyone says “bonjour” when you enter a shop, and the daily devotion to the baguette. But there was something else, something more nuanced and hard to place my finger on, that seemed to shape a rhythm or soundtrack to this place. It took nearly the entire trip for it to come into focus.
26
TampaBayParenting.com NOVEMBER 2019
BUT HERE’S THE BIG QUESTION: DO WE HAVE MORE OF WHAT MATTERS? MORE JOY? MORE REST? MORE CONNECTION? On our last night in France, we sat with our new friends, Francoise and Hubert, enjoying the food they had lovingly prepared for us. Our neighbors in the little town of Bouilland, a small, 200-person village we called home for four weeks, the couple had delighted in teaching us about French food and culture, spoiling us with their home cooking, wines and affection. Both retired, Hubert spent hours each day toiling away at his expansive collection of miniature planes and motorcycles, assembling and painting them with meticulous care, while Francoise crafted incredible purses, satchels and bags she skillfully stitched together from upcycled jeans, corduroy, leather and antique metal she found while scouring through street markets she and Hubert traveled to each weekend. These bags were extraordinary. Their patchwork style was like nothing I had ever seen before and my astonishment was impossible to hide. Francoise gifted me one and I purchased two more for friends back home. I later came to learn that she sold a few each month at nearby boutiques in Beaune and one in Dijon for as much as 300 euros each and that each took about 17 hours to make. My industrial brain fired on like a furnace roaring to life. Did she know about Etsy? Would she like to ship them to me in the States so I could help her sell them at boutiques near me? Strangely, she seemed not to match my enthusiasm. “Francoise!” I exclaimed, teetering toward frustration. “Don’t you realize how much more money you could be making?” She looked at me with a somewhat stupefied expression and said something I will never forget. “Why would I want more money? We already have everything we need.” In that moment, a hundred little things that my unconscious mind had noticed and collected during our
10 weeks in France snapped into clarity like a key that had finally clicked into a lock. They have enough; why hustle for more? This explained so, so much. Most restaurants closed between 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Of course, they could stay open and have more customers but at what cost to their employees, quality and supplies? In many towns the local grocery store still closes on Sunday or has greatly reduced hours. Remember when it used to be like that here? Remember when we could wait until Monday to buy more? As we traveled around the country, most of which is untouched by cities and subdivisions, I marveled from the highway at all the little villages packed with little houses. Turns out the average home in France is 1,200 square feet. The average size of a newly constructed single-family detached home is now 2,600 square feet in the U.S. (2,200 square feet in Canada) and yet the U.S. still manages to fill up an additional 2.3 billion square feet of offsite, rentable storage space to keep all the stuff that we can’t fit into our gargantuan homes. Here’s another startling difference between these two countries: according to CNBC, the average American now has about $38,000 in personal debt (excluding home mortgages). In France, it’s $1,900. Francoise and Hubert explained that getting credit in France is quite difficult, even getting a mortgage for a home. But perhaps regulation is just one part of the equation. Another startling contrast: the
median household income for the United States is $60,336 versus $31,304 in France. We have more! If the game is ‘he who has the most stuff wins,’ we get the gold medal. More square footage, more stuff, more income, more debt. But here’s the big question: do we have more of what matters? More joy? More rest? More connection? The average French worker receives 30 days of paid vacation per year. In the U.S., the average is 10 days. Amazingly, a huge percentage of the U.S. population doesn’t use this measly allowance. According to research, taking time away from work increases stress, and many workers report that they are unable to completely disconnect from the office, or they worry that doing so will mean they will lose out on chances to advance. So, they don’t bother taking a vacation at all. The hustle is so powerfully and relentlessly celebrated in western culture. I look around and see a vicious cycle of working and consuming that leads nowhere but the need to numb with any combination of food, alcohol, medication, drugs, shopping and screens. Any free moments of reprieve melt into a digital black hole of smartphone addiction and Netflix binging. We are sick from stress, lack of rest and mindless eating. I don’t pretend to know all the economical, historical and regulatory elements that factor into the differences between North America and France. Of course, it’s more complex. But what I have experienced in France is a spirit of sufficiency that I have not commonly experienced here. There is a sense of enoughness, an orienting towards the fundamentals of
good living (good food, good wine, good company) that seems to contrast with our unwavering desire to work more in order to consume more.
Jimmy Reid once said, “A rat race is for rats. We’re not rats. We’re human beings.” Which to me means that we have the ability to transcend our cultural automation and to step off the unending work-consume treadmill. How? Try things like going on an Amazon diet (no ordering for a month) or a consumer cleanse. Take a full month off of buying anything but the absolute essentials or declare one day a week or one week/ month as a zero spend zone. Take the minimalist challenge. Read books like "No Impact Man" or "Soulful Simplicity," both of which have been huge change agents in my life. Find a way to take a month off work, or maybe two months off. Declare Sunday a true Sabbath with no consumption, no screens and no commitments. Or maybe just start by asking: Am I happy? Is all my stuff making me happy? Or has the stuff and the debt and all the hours spent paying for both crowded out things like joy, spontaneity, spacious, rest and simplicity? Maybe we just need to remind ourselves each day that we have enough, more than enough. And from that spirit of sufficiency make changes with how we spend our time and our money that align with what really matters: love and connection.

THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR
I
By Kelly Friar t’s the most wonderful time of the year: The Junior League of Tampa’s Holiday Gift Market is back, and it gets better each year. In its 16th year, Holiday Gift Market will welcome more than 200 unique, hand-selected merchants to the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo and Entertainment Halls, attracting over 20,000 holiday shoppers. For many shoppers, The Junior League of Tampa Holiday Gift Market offers personalized and unique gifts they can’t find anywhere else, including art, home décor, clothing, jewelry, gourmet foods, toys and so much more.
FAMILY TRADITIONS
Beyond the shopping experience with your favorite vendors, some of Tampa’s favorite family traditions stem from the Holiday Gift Market. The popular princess breakfasts will be back on Saturday and Sunday morning, and Mr. and Mrs. Claus will also be onsite to begin taking wish lists. Annie McKibben and Laura Warren, Holiday Gift Market 2019 co-chairs, are excited about a new event on Friday morning called PJs & Pancakes. It is geared toward younger children who may not be in school yet, and who can arrive in their favorite pajamas for a special pancake breakfast with Santa, a photo and a special reading of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” With the family and children events gaining more attention and popularity each year, Holiday Gift Market is also adding a character tea event on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Guests are invited to enjoy a traditional high tea with favorite storybook characters.
COMMUNITY SPIRIT
While this event fills personal holiday spirit buckets, it also fills the needs bucket of the entire Tampa Bay community. This year’s theme is “Our Season of Giving,” say McKibben and Warren, who want to remind all Junior League of Tampa members and shoppers that HGM isn’t just a holiday market, but their largest fundraiser, with 100% of net proceeds going to fund the organization’s community projects and programs. Over the past 10 years, the Holiday Gift Market has raised $1.5 million that has gone directly back into the Tampa Bay Community. And with the help of event sponsors such as Publix, the 2019 presenting sponsor, and the Florida Cattlewomen’s Association, the event’s silver sponsor, the Tampa community truly understands the impact this holiday event has throughout the year.
This year’s Holiday Gift Market will kick off on Nov. 7 with an exclusive preview party that is open to the public with purchase of a special event ticket. The market will officially open Friday, Nov. 8 and close Sunday, Nov. 10. Tickets for the market and special events can be purchased in advance online or at the door. CONNECTIONS
At home, parents can help their children gain an understanding of and respect for different cultures. These books about the various cultural and religious celebrations in the fall and winter offer exciting learning opportunities for both parents and children.
DIWALI Let’s Celebrate 5 Days of Diwali! by Ajanta Chakraborty and Vivek Kumar is an educational but accessible introduction to Diwali for young children. Book 1 of the “Maya & Neel’s India Adventure Series,” the story follows two children and their pet squirrel on a trip to India for the Festival of Lights. Diwali, India’s biggest holiday, was celebrated in October this year. HANUKKAH How can goblins inform you about the eight days of Hanukkah? The award-winning “Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins” by Eric A. Kimmel touches on the holiday’s traditions with detailed artwork and a clever story of a traveler who outsmarts eight goblins to save Hanukkah. Hanukkah this year begins at sundown Dec. 22. CHRISTMAS Two of Tomie dePaola’s beautifully illustrated stories introduce readers to Mexican Christmas traditions. “The Night of Las Posadas” describes a miracle in New Mexico during an annual Las Posadas celebration (Dec.16-24), which commemorates the journey Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem before Jesus was born. “The Legend of the Poinsettia” shares a heartfelt message about gift giving through a retelling of a Mexican folk story about the origin of poinsettias.

Middle School students take younger classes on an international tour during “Our World Day,” introducing them to dances, foods, games and music popular in other countries. Fifth grade and eighth grade students research causes they feel strongly about and create presentations on how people inspire change in the world. KWANZAA Author Angela Shelf Medearis incorporates the seven principles of Kwanzaa – unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith – into her family story “Seven Spools of Thread: A Kwanzaa Story.” With striking illustrations, the story tells how seven bickering brothers learn to work together after their father’s death. Kwanzaa starts Dec. 26 and ends Jan. 1.
CHINESE NEW YEAR A colorful book that Corbett Prep’s PreK3 class loves, “Bringing in the New Year” by Grace Lin follows a ChineseAmerican family as they get ready for the Lunar New Year. The story culminates with a vibrant dragon parade depicted on an extra-long spread. The Chinese New Year and the Year of the Rat begins Jan. 25, 2020. Corbett Prep’s diverse student body lends itself to a climate where students can talk respectfully about their differences and similarities. Books that reflect the holidays they celebrate make them feel proud about their heritage, and books about traditions new to them strengthen connections to other cultures.

ith twinkling lights, flickering candles, special foods and valued traditions, the fall and winter holidays offer numerous opportunities for children to learn about and develop an appreciation for other cultures. An international perspective is important for children today growing up in communities that are increasingly diverse and in a world made smaller through technology. Corbett Prep is an International Baccalaureate School, which uses an inquiry-based approach to education that places learning in a global context. A private school for PreK3 through 8th grade, Corbett Prep also serves as the flagship school for the International School Connection to advance global education.

ANYTIME ADMISSIONS THE BCS DIFFERENCE Personal Attention - With our small class sizes, you can be sure your child is getting the attention they need to succeed. Academic Excellence - It doesn’t take a BIG private school to help students achieve. Our graduates prove this with their 4.4 GPA average and the millions of dollars in scholarships they have earned. Values Based Education - We’re an interdenominational Christian School, and that informs every part of what we do.

Christian Values, Small Class Sizes and Academic Excellence That’s what the parents of Bayshore Christian School love best about their school. Our students find a warm and supportive environment with teachers they love, fine arts and athletic opportunities, and the Christian values they live at home are reflected in the people around them. And as one young mid-year transfer student said, "Here, I feel like I’m learning much more. The teachers care about me."
Our family has found a perfect home for our kids. We are still in the elementary division but our boys love their teachers. The parent-teacher relationships we've built are remarkable and the sta f creates an environment that is positive and Christian. It's "cool" to be smart and the whole student is appreciated. The arts program is phenomenal and BCS athletics department is amazing too. This is the best kept secret in South Tampa. With all the great choices in our town, we still didn't hesitate to choose BCS.

I
try to be a good mom. I love my kids and want the best for them. I do my research when it comes to doctors and dentists and dance classes. So, why wasn’t I doing my research when it came to schools? The answer: I didn’t realize how many options we have. Before I joined the team at Hillsborough County Public Schools, I’d heard the term “School Choice” but I didn’t really understand the concept. For our family, our neighborhood schools have been a great fit. However, there are A LOT of options out there from Hillsborough Schools—especially for children with specific interests and talents. Does your student have an artistic flair? An interest in robotics? Does he or she want to see what goes into becoming a doctor? If so, consider a Magnet School or a Choice Attractor Program. These focus on a theme (like Environmental Science or Performing Arts) and engage your student to discover more. And they’re all tuition-free. You can find out more about the options across Hillsborough County at HillsboroughSchools. org/choice. Once you’ve looked at different schools and perhaps set up a tour, the Choice application process is simple. Go to HillsboroughSchools.org/choice and click the “Apply” button. The first application period for the 2020-2021 school year is Oct. 25–Dec. 31, 2019. Depending on whether you’re choosing a Magnet Schools or Choice Attractor Program, you’ll have a certain number of schools/programs to which you can apply. Now, don’t stress—it’s not first come, first served. The person who applies in October has the same chance as the person who applies in December. You’ll be notified in February whether you received an offer to one of the schools on your application. And here’s the really cool part—our school district is always adding new and innovative programs.
Here are just a few new Magnet/Choice options for the 2020-2021 school year:
SOUTH TAMPA ACADEMY AT MONROE MIDDLE MAGNET (SOUTH TAMPA)
An application-only International Baccalaureate (IB) Candidate School launching in 6th Grade in 2020.
RODGERS MIDDLE SCHOOL, A CAMBRIDGE PREP ACADEMY (RIVERVIEW)
The world-renowned Cambridge AICE learning philosophy will be ingrained in the curriculum at Rodgers starting in 2020. Students can apply for entry to the Cambridge Leadership Institute, an add-on program with special opportunities to meet local CEOs and engage in unique afterschool activities.
GRECO MIDDLE SCHOOL, AN IB CANDIDATE SCHOOL (TEMPLE TERRACE)
Launching in 2020, this IB Candidate School will incorporate the IB learning philosophy for every student in every grade.
SUMNER HIGH SCHOOL (SOUTHSHORE AREA)
Students in this application-only program will have access to state-of-the-art high school level facilities, while spending time almost exclusively with their own sixth grade peer group in a learning environment driven by the internationally respected Cambridge AICE philosophy.
During the school choice process, don’t forget to do some deep digging into your neighborhood school. Our schools often have so many unique clubs, programs, sports teams, competitions and benefits that you may not know about everything until you check them out! NOVEMBER 2019 TampaBayParenting.com

Checking out library materials encourages borrowing instead of consuming and promotes sustainability. When families borrow items from the public library, they are sharing with the entire community. A library visit provides a great opportunity to talk with your child about what it means to be part of a community and the ways we can work together to care for our shared resources. Whether or not your child has a library card of their own, encourage them to get involved when you check out and return your items. With our easy-to-use self-checkout machines and digital apps, your child can become more familiar with the full cycle of borrowing, caring for and bringing back library materials. By being a part of the process, they will feel more invested and will be more likely to understand and apply these concepts in other situations as they learn and grow. Volunteering gives a sense of purpose, teaches valuable skills and helps you meet others and develop new relationships. The library is thankful to the hundreds of teens and adults who devote their time to support the Friends of the Library, Library Teen Advisory Boards and the Hillsborough Literacy Council. The Friends of the Library operate library book sales and bookstores, which raise funds to support library collections and programs. Hillsborough Literacy Council volunteers make a difference by helping adults learn to read or speak English. Teen Advisory Boards are a great way to earn service hours, develop leadership skills and make new friends while helping with programming, recommending materials and giving input for ways to engage more teens in the library. The library offers other opportunities for teens, parents and grandparents to demonstrate the value of volunteerism while strengthening relationships by spending time together. Many community groups use library meeting spaces to gather together in support of a good cause. The Friends of the Library provide materials for programs such as the Bloomingdale Giveback, where you can learn to knit or crochet and the hand-made items are donated to local nonprofits such as shelters or nursing centers. For more information on volunteering, visit HCPLC.org/ about/volunteer.

when do you need ANTIBIOTICS?
by Dr. David Berman and Ashley Roberts
A
ntibiotics are a major tool in treating illnesses caused by bacteria, but like any tool, they should be used appropriately. If they are not, the tool may not work when we really need it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that at least one-third of pediatric antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary. David Berman, D.O., FAAP, FPIDS, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins All Children’s, explains when we do, and do not, need antibiotics just in time for U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, Nov. 18-24.
WHEN DO WE NEED ANTIBIOTICS?
Antibiotics are for bacterial infections only. This includes infections such as a bloodstream infections, skin abscess/impetigo, bacterial pneumonia, urinary tract infections, streptococcal pharyngitis and some middle ear infections. Certain antibiotics should be used very infrequently in children, such as azithromycin, commonly known as the “Z-Pak,” so it’s important to ask your child’s doctor what is truly necessary for their bacterial infection.
WHEN SHOULD WE NOT USE ANTIBIOTICS?
Colds, sore throats, upper respiratory infections and influenza (the flu) are caused by viruses, which antibiotics won’t kill, prevent or stop spreading. The only treatment for a cold is rest and time. While your child may not feel their best, it’s important to remember that within 1014 days, symptoms will likely improve and there’s no need to take an antibiotic. This chart from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention breaks down exactly when you may need an antibiotic:
REACTIONS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF IMPROPER ANTIBIOTICS USE
image from CDC
Research shows that about 70,000 kids visit the emergency center each year due to reactions from antibiotics. When inappropriately prescribed, adverse events can occur like diarrhea and liver and kidney injuries. Antibiotics can interact with other medications you might be taking and allergic reactions can also occur which are sometimes life-threatening, resulting in emergency room visits.
ARE THERE RISKS TO TAKING ANTIBIOTICS EVEN WHEN NEEDED?
76
TampaBayParenting.com NOVEMBER 2019
Always remember, antibiotics do not treat viruses, so never ask your doctor to prescribe you an antibiotic for a virus.
Getty Images 694822558
Even when taken appropriately, antibiotic adverse events are still possible, so parents should monitor their children closely and ask their health care provider questions like, “Does my child absolutely need this” and “Is this the right antibiotic?”
Additionally, 90% of patients who report a penicillin allergy are not truly allergic and can receive penicillin or similar antibiotics safely. A rash during a childhood viral illness or gastrointestinal side-effects from an antibiotic may have been called an allergy. Unfortunately, once someone is labeled in their record as having a penicillin allergy, it is difficult to remove that label. This results in prescribing broader-spectrum, more expensive and less safe antibiotics. Talk to your child’s provider in-depth about these concerns before they officially mark down a penicillin allergy.
