‘Tis the season in more ways than one. Sarah, my pride and joy, my one and only, my top priority, left the nest two months ago. She told me she read somewhere that parents of only children act especially crazy when their children leave home. The truth is that I do want to talk to her every day, whether it’s a three-minute phone call or a 50-minute FaceTime session. We also can’t avoid that she is an only child raised by a single mother since the age of 5. Suddenly, she’s a young adult and doing well in college. I often find myself reminiscing about the difficult promise I made to give her roots and then wings to fly. The last time we spoke in the wee hours of the morning, Sarah shared a paper she had written about something that had profoundly impacted her life. It

was a story about how her mom worked at a nonprofit called Metropolitan Ministries, an organization that helps poor and homeless families find a better life. She went on to describe her own volunteer moments at the Ministries’ holiday tent. She recalled a little boy named Sammy asking if she had food in her refrigerator at home, because he did not. Sarah described observing my 11 years working at Metropolitan Ministries and her own volunteering as “a way to gather strength for her inner spirit. The world can be an ugly, cruel place, but you can bring sunshine and laughter to your little corner.” It was then that I knew she would be okay. Of all the special occasions parents can share with their children, volunteering and showing compassion for others is a true gift to give and receive.

FALL IN LOVE WITH GARDENING INTRODUCE YOUR KIDDOS TO PLANTS THIS SEASON By Carrie Mobley

Water is a MUST

Most of you are in zone 9. This is very important in knowing which plants to plant. It comes down to how much cold or heat a plant can tolerate. You have a little wiggle room. I have several tropical trees that are better in zone 10. It just meant I had to cover them from frost, especially when they were babies. Keep in mind many nurseries sell plants that do not survive in our zone. However, the back of each tag on your plant will give you the information.

Every time someone tells me they “kill everything” they plant, I already know the problem. Daily watering is necessary. And, in small pots, you might need twice a day watering. It’s a commitment! During the rainy season, we get a little help from Mother Nature. But as we enter fall, you have to be diligent. This is a great task for kids. It’s hard to overwater. Pots have a hole for drainage, and the earth will know what to do with the excess water if ground planting. If you know you can’t commit that much, succulents are very trendy right now! And they can go weeks without water.

Choose fresh herbs and fruit trees

Not only will you find the pleasure in using those fresh herbs in your cooking, but they’re easy to grow and kids will love picking them right off the plant to taste. Fresh mint, basil, thyme, parsley and cilantro are inexpensive and fun options. If you see insects starting to munch on them, simply mix soapy water in a spray bottle and spray the plants. Fruit trees like lemon, peach, (just make sure it is a “low chill” variety of peach) and avocado are easy to plant and can even live for years in a large pot. You won’t believe how much pleasure you’ll find in watching the blooms turn into fruit! I’m looking forward to these upcoming cooler months in which so many veggies thrive. Choose beans, broccoli, carrots, leeks, onions and spinach. Start small! And enjoy the fruits (and veggies) of your labor.

hile relaxing on a cabin porch in the hills of North Carolina, three-time Emmy-award winning television reporter Bobby Lewis clearly felt God plant a mission in his heart. It was time to remind people that good news is not extinct. “Usually, we associate newscasts with depressing stories and deflating reports,” says Lewis, who was born in St. Petersburg and lives in Seminole with his wife of nine years, Juslin, and their two children, Ava and Easton. “Fires, shootings and disasters pepper the headlines. Despite the disappointing outlook, there is reason to celebrate the many joyful moments all around us. They often feel hidden, but the good news is easy to find if you know where to look.”

Family—a beautiful, powerful word. For some, it conjures up images of what family is supposed to look like. Holidays can be trying, as we pressure ourselves to fit molds of what families are supposed to be and do. These Tampa families created new molds.

The Gannuch family

For 5+ years, Stephanie and Cy Gannuch tried conceiving. “I tried everything, acupuncture, the whole gamut,” Stephanie says. Then she prayed. “I heard a voice say, ‘There’s a soul out there for you.’” She knew they were called to adopt. They hurried to complete the months-long home study process, undergoing medical tests, providing financial records, creating a family profile, and securing recommendations.

Stephanie says. Emee’s paperwork was signed on Stephanie’s birthday—another gift, another sign. The Gannuchs send Mother’s Day cards, Christmas gifts, and an annual book of highlights to the birth mother. “She’d never do anything to disrupt their lives. I know she loves them.” They speak to the girls about adoption—explaining how the birth mother carried them in her belly because Stephanie couldn’t, and underscoring how families are made differently. “They know we’re meant to be together, that they grew in my heart.” Annually, they celebrate Gotcha Day. Every Dec. 20, they recognize the girls’ release by visiting Parksdale Farms for strawberry shortcake. At Christmas, they create traditions with neighbors: “We watch movies in the yard, in PJs. I want them to know friends are family.”

Some feel one child completes their family. Others, two. For the Billos, nine might be the number. Ann has eight children with husband, James, and one stepson. Ages: 23, 18, 15, 10, 9, 7, 5, 3, and newborn. The Billos didn’t envision nine children. Actually, two children and six years in, marital difficulty bubbled. “I asked God make clear what He wanted me to do. I came to a conviction that we’d have another baby, though I didn’t want one.” Neither partner was on board. Their goals were rebuilding and staying married. James’ life counsel assured him children are

In under a week, a mom chose them. Everly was born Labor Day weekend—the Gannuch’s 5th wedding anniversary. “There were signs all along.” Birth mothers The Billos family have 48 hours postpartum to sign official paperwork. Stephanie wasn’t nervous. Leaving the hospital, she saw a rainbow: “That was my sign. I had peace.” The birth mother signed paperwork on her own 21st birthday. Then, the adoption attorney called again. Everly’s birth mother was pregnant again, and wanted the babies to be together. “We wanted them together, too. There was nothing to think about,” 16 TampaBayParenting.com | NOVEMBER 2018

blessings. A month later, Ann was pregnant. Baby three was just 6 months when Ann got pregnant again: “We were shocked but decided we’d welcome these children— these blessings.” Ann admits feeling overwhelmed: “I just want to cry sometimes, but God’s faithful.” For a family of 11, celebrations are undertakings. They simultaneously celebrate each month’s birthdays. Ann hosts Thanksgiving because guests traveling to them is easier. They don’t do Santa but do exchange gifts: “We follow something you want, something you need, and something to read.”

Brian advises: “Put personal feelings aside and your child first. Bella’s our guiding light.” Respect is non-negotiable. “No matter what happened to our marriage,” Brian added, “there were no crossed words about raising Bella.” Brian and Katherine demonstrate that divorce doesn’t have to mean a crumbling of respect, communication, and putting children first. “When those aren’t in place,” said Brian, “it’s to the child’s detriment.” The Cleary kids

RESPECT

Five years into marriage and with a 3-year-old daughter, Brian and Katherine divorced. Four years later, they’re intent on successful co-parenting. Bella spends two days with each parent and alternates weekends: “We didn’t want an entire week without seeing her,” explains Katherine. Co-parenting includes FaceTime on the way to school and sharing daily pictures. They were pleased at back-to-school night because, for the first time, the teacher prepared an informational packet for each of them. Both are heavily involved in Bella’s academics, and extra items are kept at each house. Busy attorneys, their assistants check the shared “Isabella” calendar before scheduling anything. Both believe overcommunication is key. Loud music, flying wrapping paper, excited kids, and adults sipping spiked eggnog. “It’s a bit overwhelming for Brian, who wears ear plugs.” During their engagement, Charlene felt out of place because Brian’s family celebrations were so quiet. She’s now focused on sharing Peruvians’ New Year’s tradition of running around the block with an empty suitcase at midnight: “It signifies a year of travel. Sometimes she only has one meal a day, cereal and coffee. She says she is grateful because she can turn a Thanksgiving dinner into two weeks worth of meals. Dan told us that he hasn’t had electricity in his home, where he lives with his wife and four children, for a month and a half. When people

come to us for holiday assistance, we often find their suffering is actually year round. Liz came for help because she has terminal stage 4 cancer and the medical bills have fractured her financially. She said every holiday that comes around is one more she gets to have, and since she was diagnosed with cancer, she’s learned that every day is a gift. We reach 32,000 homeless or at-risk men, women, and children each year through our services. More than 124 families and 300 children live on our main campuses, and we will case-manage 740 families this year, both on and off campus. Over 400 families were prevented from becoming homeless in the last year through our prevention and diversion programs. During this Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, we will help 20,000 families in four counties, who would otherwise go without, with food and toys so that they may have hope and a reason to smile. Volunteering at the Holiday Tent Every year during the holiday season, Metropolitan Ministries constructs what has become an iconic symbol of hope in the Tampa Bay area—the Metropolitan Ministries Holiday Tent. This tent is no ordinary tent. In fact, it has grown over the years to be the size of a football field in order to accommodate more than 100,000 people who will visit during November and December. People from all walks of life come to donate, volunteer and receive services. More than 10,000 volunteers each year give their time and hearts at the holiday tent. Volunteers range in age from 12 to 90, and teachable moments are everywhere. It’s all about the community uniting for the greater good because no one should go without a holiday if we can do something about it. Metropolitan Ministries expects 20,000 hurting families that can’t afford a holiday to seek assistance this season. That number is up slightly from 18,000 families in 2017. Families in need are currently registering to receive assistance for

food and toys for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The hurt is overwhelming for moms and dads who are struggling to provide for their families. Given the choice, most would go without eating to give their children a holiday. Many are already making extreme sacrifices and there is nothing left over for traditional celebrations and gift giving. Metropolitan Ministries aims to bring Thanksgiving and Christmas to these families through services offered at the holiday tent. Because so much of the food and labor is donated, the Ministries’ cost to provide a hot meal is just $1.96. More ways to get involved Without true community collaboration, so many would be left out in the cold with no hope for a future. When individuals, businesses, corporate groups, and families volunteer and donate to Metropolitan Ministries, we are able to provide a holiday experience that is out of reach for so many hurting families in Tampa Bay. Some of the most important ways to get involved include: hosting a food or toy drive, volunteering, offering your special skill or service, being an advocate, and making a monetary donation. All of these opportunities are available and needed 365 days a year. Hope counts on you.

ovember is National Adoption Month, and an opportunity for all of us to reflect on family and how important it is for the community to embrace foster and adoptive parents. For many parents who are called to be a family, the pathway may be anything but traditional, as the Vandenbergs’ story demonstrates. The Vandenberg family will soon celebrate 20 years of marriage, six years of fostering, and more recently, the adoption of two brothers for a total of three adopted children from Hillsborough County’s foster care system. The Vandenbergs became foster parents in 2012, eager to make a difference in the lives of children who were victims of traumatic experiences. They made it their mission to offer each child in their care the unconditional love and support they desperately needed to heal. They worked hard to meet the individual needs of each child, including emotional and unique medical needs, such as reflux, liver disease and neurological issues. No matter the obstacle, the Vandenbergs always prioritized the best interest of each and every child. As a result, the children thrived.

Their focus was to help reconnect children with their biological families. I’m thrilled to share that out of the 10 children that the family fostered, seven have been able to return home to be with their biological families. Although the Vandenbergs had no intention of adopting, they created an unbreakable bond with three children, who became part of their forever family through adoption. For children transitioning from foster care to adoption, permanency is bigger than the word adoption. For these children, the sense of “home” means so much more. It’s a sense of belonging, feeling safe and loved, and ultimately, cared for. Permanency is having a place and people to belong to no matter what happens. It brings with it the sense of unconditional love and support, something we all need as human beings. These days, the Vandenberg family continues to thrive and grow in love and appreciation for each other. They feel as if their family is now complete with three young boys, and have decided to switch gears in foster care. The family is no longer actively fostering, but instead, is focused completely on parenting and teaching their children, prioritizing education and life experiences, and of course, advocating for foster care and adoption. For the miracle of family, the Vandenbergs, and so many others like them: Thank you for your love, sacrifice, and service, for being foster parents and for the beauty of adoption!

The focus this week is the sense of sight, and 3-year-olds in Corbett Prep’s PreKindergarten program are on a hike around campus to see what they can see. Back in the classroom, teachers point out how our senses play different roles, asking students to think about the differences in how snacks taste in the dark or if color still exists without light. In PreK4, meanwhile, students studying body systems visit Corbett Prep’s Application Lab to peek inside the body using the augmented reality technology of zSpace. Wearing 3D glasses, the 4-yearolds examine detailed 3D images of the

circulatory and digestive systems that look so real students reach out to try to touch them. Engaging lessons that appeal to a child’s natural curiosity instill the joy of learning at a young age. The prekindergarten years are critical in preparing students academically, socially and behaviorally for kindergarten and the rest of their education. Being sick yourself is no picnic. How about managing everything while your spouse huddles under a blanket sweating and shivering? No fun. And if it’s your school-age child who has the sniffles? Even worse. But dealing with a sick infant? The worst. This time of year, the flu may be on everyone’s minds as the major illness to watch out for. But there’s another culprit: RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control, RSV is a relatively common virus that causes severe lung infections, including bronchiolitis (infection of small airways in the lungs) and pneumonia (an infection of the lungs). The CDC states on its website that each year, 57,000-plus children younger than 5 are hospitalized due to RSV. It can affect the elderly as well. About 177,000 older adults are hospitalized each year with an RSV infection. Unfortunately, for about 14,000 of those older people, the infection proves fatal. Dr. John Prpich, a pediatric pulmonologist at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital explains that the seasons vary, even across the state. Miami and Jacksonville could see spikes at completely different times. This year in Tampa Bay, the

season started in mid-July and is anticipated to continue through March, and it’s unusually severe. “It’s an early season this year and we saw a rapid increase in the amount of RSV cases in our community,” Dr. Prpich says. The state determines the extent of the season from positive swabs that come in from emergency room and pediatrician’s offices. In November, the rate of RSV in Florida stood at 20-25 percent. “It’s important to know that almost all kids will get RSV at least once by 3 years,” says Dr. Prpich. “It’s the most common reason worldwide that infants and toddlers are hospitalized for respiratory conditions.” How can you tell if your infant has RSV? Prpich says to look for fast breathing, “like a puppy.” If the child is coughing excessively and working hard to breathe, you want to intervene before you see a change of color. In babies 2 months and below, RSV can cause pauses in breathing called apnea, when the baby will turn “dusky” or blue, especially around the mouth or fingernails. A high fever is another concerning sign. Some children develop significantly lower respiratory tract symptoms called bronchiolitis, marked by swelling in the airway and obstruction due to mucus. Although most healthy infants, older children and adults recover fairly easily, some patients may need to be treated with oxygen and IV

fluids, and every year, some kids end up on a ventilator. Although Albuterol and steroids are commonly used in other conditions with wheezing and difficulty breathing, these don’t prove effective in helping with symptoms due to RSV. Some children who are especially at risk—such as preemies—can qualify to receive a monoclonal antibody given monthly as a preventative measure during RSV season. Another nuisance aspect of RSV—you can get it more than once in one season. Also, children who get a very significant case when they’re under 6 months may be at increased risk for further episodes of wheezing with future viruses lasting into their teenage years. The news isn’t all bad, however. Although there is no cure, prevention is low tech, easy and doable. You catch the sickness when you touch the droplets from someone’s cough or sneeze and then touch your face, nose, mouth or eyes. The virus can live for 8-12 hours on a surface. So do the following things to ensure you keep your baby safe from this disease this season: • Wash your hands—constantly!— with soap and water. • If your child is sick, don’t send them to daycare or school to spread their germs on toys and surfaces. Kids going back to school after the holidays is a major risk factor for RSV. • Use antibacterial wipes at the grocery store to wipe carts. • Newborns need bubble care. Everyone wants to touch baby, but encourage visitors to touch baby’s feet rather than her face. • If someone does get sick in your home, clean contaminated surfaces such as doorknobs, frequently.

We are thrilled to share that we took home two Charlie Awards from the Florida Magazine Association. We placed first for Writing Excellence/Commentary/Opinion for our editorial and position statement on gun safety which was published in our April issue. It is not easy to take a stand on such divisive issues, but we felt we needed to take a position for stricter gun laws after our friends lost their niece in the school shooting in Parkland. We also took home the Silver Award for Digital Excellence/ Best Online Video for our inside look at the redesign of MOSI in Tampa. We love producing videos to show you all of the amazing things you can do together as a family in Tampa Bay. We’ll keep them coming! We will continue to work hard to promote safe and healthy families in Tampa Bay and share stories that are not only impactful, but fun!
