Sarah, daughter of Justine Burke

‘Tis the season in more ways than one. Sarah, my pride and joy, my one and only, my top priority, left the nest two months ago. She told me she read somewhere that parents of only children act especially crazy when their children leave home. The truth is that I do want to talk to her every day, whether it’s a three-minute phone call or a 50-minute FaceTime session. We also can’t avoid that she is an only child raised by a single mother since the age of 5. Suddenly, she’s a young adult and doing well in college. I often find myself reminiscing about the difficult promise I made to give her roots and then wings to fly. The last time we spoke in the wee hours of the morning, Sarah shared a paper she had written about something that had profoundly impacted her life. It

was a story about how her mom worked at a nonprofit called Metropolitan Ministries, an organization that helps poor and homeless families find a better life. She went on to describe her own volunteer moments at the Ministries’ holiday tent. She recalled a little boy named Sammy asking if she had food in her refrigerator at home, because he did not. Sarah described observing my 11 years working at Metropolitan Ministries and her own volunteering as “a way to gather strength for her inner spirit. The world can be an ugly, cruel place, but you can bring sunshine and laughter to your little corner.” It was then that I knew she would be okay. Of all the special occasions parents can share with their children, volunteering and showing compassion for others is a true gift to give and receive.

JUSTINE BURKE Justine Burke, vice president of marketing for Metropolitan Ministries, and her daughter, Sarah, a college freshman, fill their spirits with volunteering at Burke's workplace.

LIFE + HOME | FALL GARDENING

FALL IN LOVE WITH GARDENING INTRODUCE YOUR KIDDOS TO PLANTS THIS SEASON By Carrie Mobley

2

Water is a MUST

Most of you are in zone 9. This is very important in knowing which plants to plant. It comes down to how much cold or heat a plant can tolerate. You have a little wiggle room. I have several tropical trees that are better in zone 10. It just meant I had to cover them from frost, especially when they were babies. Keep in mind many nurseries sell plants that do not survive in our zone. However, the back of each tag on your plant will give you the information.

Every time someone tells me they “kill everything” they plant, I already know the problem. Daily watering is necessary. And, in small pots, you might need twice a day watering. It’s a commitment! During the rainy season, we get a little help from Mother Nature. But as we enter fall, you have to be diligent. This is a great task for kids. It’s hard to overwater. Pots have a hole for drainage, and the earth will know what to do with the excess water if ground planting. If you know you can’t commit that much, succulents are very trendy right now! And they can go weeks without water.

3

Choose fresh herbs and fruit trees

Not only will you find the pleasure in using those fresh herbs in your cooking, but they’re easy to grow and kids will love picking them right off the plant to taste. Fresh mint, basil, thyme, parsley and cilantro are inexpensive and fun options. If you see insects starting to munch on them, simply mix soapy water in a spray bottle and spray the plants. Fruit trees like lemon, peach, (just make sure it is a “low chill” variety of peach) and avocado are easy to plant and can even live for years in a large pot. You won’t believe how much pleasure you’ll find in watching the blooms turn into fruit! I’m looking forward to these upcoming cooler months in which so many veggies thrive. Choose beans, broccoli, carrots, leeks, onions and spinach. Start small! And enjoy the fruits (and veggies) of your labor.

hile relaxing on a cabin porch in the hills of North Carolina, three-time Emmy-award winning television reporter Bobby Lewis clearly felt God plant a mission in his heart. It was time to remind people that good news is not extinct. “Usually, we associate newscasts with depressing stories and deflating reports,” says Lewis, who was born in St. Petersburg and lives in Seminole with his wife of nine years, Juslin, and their two children, Ava and Easton. “Fires, shootings and disasters pepper the headlines. Despite the disappointing outlook, there is reason to celebrate the many joyful moments all around us. They often feel hidden, but the good news is easy to find if you know where to look.”

I THINK THE GOOD NEWS OUGHT TO BE IN THE NEWS. - Bobby Lewis

A 10News WTSP feature reporter and Clearwater High and University of South Florida graduate, Lewis has been uncovering uplifting, feel-good stories for his daily human interest segment, “On The Road,” since 2014. He’s compiled 28 of those stories into his new book, “Finding Joy Beyond the Headlines.”

“I think good news ought to be in the news,” Lewis says. “The headlines are awful, but God is working in our media mess.” Inspired by seeing God move in incredible ways in the lives of the people he’s interviewed, Lewis picked seven Biblical principles to unwrap in “Finding Joy Beyond the Headlines.” Each chapter highlights a different principle – love, joy, giving, ambition, blessing, thankfulness and perseverance – and shares a real news story from his travels. Each person featured exemplifies his or her chapter principle and shows how God can do amazing things in the lives of people who are seeking joy. You’ll feel connected to a child photography phenom, a WWII pilot and a colorblind landscaper. You’ll fall in love with an ageless mermaid, a Santa-in-training and even a cancer-defeating Mr. Universe. One major distinction for Lewis’ book is the ability for readers to watch the original news segments for each character found within the pages. He’s compiled all the links for his stories at findingjoybeyondtheheadlines.com. Hearing from the book subjects in their own words adds credibility to the miracles God performed in their lives. Website testimonials also help readers get to know the book subjects even better. The book has been reviewed by Team USA Olympic Chaplain, Asif Shaikh, “Wheel of Fortune” co-host Vanna White, and 14-time author Jennifer Rothschild. Negative headlines are not going away. Fortunately, neither is God. Embrace the joyful news all around you with Lewis’ new book, “Finding Joy Beyond The Headlines,” and watch more stories like the ones featured in the book weeknights on 10News WTSP at 5:30 p.m.

LIFE + HOME | FAMILIES

Portraits of a family By Tara Payor, Ph.D.

Family—a beautiful, powerful word. For some, it conjures up images of what family is supposed to look like. Holidays can be trying, as we pressure ourselves to fit molds of what families are supposed to be and do. These Tampa families created new molds.

SIGNPOSTS

The Gannuch family

For 5+ years, Stephanie and Cy Gannuch tried conceiving. “I tried everything, acupuncture, the whole gamut,” Stephanie says. Then she prayed. “I heard a voice say, ‘There’s a soul out there for you.’” She knew they were called to adopt. They hurried to complete the months-long home study process, undergoing medical tests, providing financial records, creating a family profile, and securing recommendations.

Stephanie says. Emee’s paperwork was signed on Stephanie’s birthday—another gift, another sign. The Gannuchs send Mother’s Day cards, Christmas gifts, and an annual book of highlights to the birth mother. “She’d never do anything to disrupt their lives. I know she loves them.” They speak to the girls about adoption—explaining how the birth mother carried them in her belly because Stephanie couldn’t, and underscoring how families are made differently. “They know we’re meant to be together, that they grew in my heart.” Annually, they celebrate Gotcha Day. Every Dec. 20, they recognize the girls’ release by visiting Parksdale Farms for strawberry shortcake. At Christmas, they create traditions with neighbors: “We watch movies in the yard, in PJs. I want them to know friends are family.”

BLESSINGS

Some feel one child completes their family. Others, two. For the Billos, nine might be the number. Ann has eight children with husband, James, and one stepson. Ages: 23, 18, 15, 10, 9, 7, 5, 3, and newborn. The Billos didn’t envision nine children. Actually, two children and six years in, marital difficulty bubbled. “I asked God make clear what He wanted me to do. I came to a conviction that we’d have another baby, though I didn’t want one.” Neither partner was on board. Their goals were rebuilding and staying married. James’ life counsel assured him children are

In under a week, a mom chose them. Everly was born Labor Day weekend—the Gannuch’s 5th wedding anniversary. “There were signs all along.” Birth mothers The Billos family have 48 hours postpartum to sign official paperwork. Stephanie wasn’t nervous. Leaving the hospital, she saw a rainbow: “That was my sign. I had peace.” The birth mother signed paperwork on her own 21st birthday. Then, the adoption attorney called again. Everly’s birth mother was pregnant again, and wanted the babies to be together. “We wanted them together, too. There was nothing to think about,” 16 TampaBayParenting.com | NOVEMBER 2018

blessings. A month later, Ann was pregnant. Baby three was just 6 months when Ann got pregnant again: “We were shocked but decided we’d welcome these children— these blessings.” Ann admits feeling overwhelmed: “I just want to cry sometimes, but God’s faithful.” For a family of 11, celebrations are undertakings. They simultaneously celebrate each month’s birthdays. Ann hosts Thanksgiving because guests traveling to them is easier. They don’t do Santa but do exchange gifts: “We follow something you want, something you need, and something to read.”

Brian advises: “Put personal feelings aside and your child first. Bella’s our guiding light.” Respect is non-negotiable. “No matter what happened to our marriage,” Brian added, “there were no crossed words about raising Bella.” Brian and Katherine demonstrate that divorce doesn’t have to mean a crumbling of respect, communication, and putting children first. “When those aren’t in place,” said Brian, “it’s to the child’s detriment.” The Cleary kids

RESPECT

Five years into marriage and with a 3-year-old daughter, Brian and Katherine divorced. Four years later, they’re intent on successful co-parenting. Bella spends two days with each parent and alternates weekends: “We didn’t want an entire week without seeing her,” explains Katherine. Co-parenting includes FaceTime on the way to school and sharing daily pictures. They were pleased at back-to-school night because, for the first time, the teacher prepared an informational packet for each of them. Both are heavily involved in Bella’s academics, and extra items are kept at each house. Busy attorneys, their assistants check the shared “Isabella” calendar before scheduling anything. Both believe overcommunication is key. The three spend Christmas morning together and take Bella gift shopping for one another: “At first, it was stressful not having her all of Christmas day,” Katherine says. “Now, we all know it’s okay.” Each celebrates with Bella before or after actual holidays. They’ve created traditions, including mommydaughter days at Nordstrom and daddy-daughter date nights at the Straz.

BLENDING

Families blend cultures. The Clearys did. Deeply connected to her Peruvian roots, Charlene’s helped Brian and children—Christian and Carina—embrace Peru’s traditions. They celebrate Noche Buena, which includes a spread of lechon (roast pork) and papa rellena (stuffed potato). Charlene loves that the kids have a slumber party like she and her sisters did. Just after midnight, Christmas music plays, cueing the kids to wake and wish baby Jesus a happy birthday and family a Feliz Navidad. Then, they open presents: “It’s spirited and loud,” says Charlene. Loud music, flying wrapping paper, excited kids, and adults sipping spiked eggnog. “It’s a bit overwhelming for Brian, who wears ear plugs.” During their engagement, Charlene felt out of place because Brian’s family celebrations were so quiet. She’s now focused on sharing Peruvians’ New Year’s tradition of running around the block with an empty suitcase at midnight: “It signifies a year of travel. I remember doing it in Lima, when young.” Families are uniquely made. This holiday season and beyond, embrace your family’s mold and hold strong to the fire of family love.

GUEST EDITOR | LIFE + HOME

By Justine Burke, V.P. Marketing, Metropolitan Ministries

F

ounded in 1972, Metropolitan Ministries is a local grassroots, donor and volunteerfueled community nonprofit. We provide practical solutions for poor and homeless families and individuals in the Tampa Bay region. Through services that are designed to alleviate suffering, promote dignity and instill self-sufficiency as an expression of the ongoing ministry of Jesus Christ, Metropolitan Ministries strives to be America’s most effective and innovative caregiver for those in need. Our services help individuals, children and families, no matter how serious the need. Whether they need to get off the streets at night or they’re seeking education so they can get a job that will support their family, we can help. Healing broken lives and building strong, caring communities Evany is 76 years old, retired, and living off social security. She came to register for holiday assistance. Sometimes she only has one meal a day, cereal and coffee. She says she is grateful because she can turn a Thanksgiving dinner into two weeks worth of meals. Dan told us that he hasn’t had electricity in his home, where he lives with his wife and four children, for a month and a half. When people

DURING THIS THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SEASON, WE WILL HELP 20,000 FAMILIES IN FOUR COUNTIES.

come to us for holiday assistance, we often find their suffering is actually year round. Liz came for help because she has terminal stage 4 cancer and the medical bills have fractured her financially. She said every holiday that comes around is one more she gets to have, and since she was diagnosed with cancer, she’s learned that every day is a gift. We reach 32,000 homeless or at-risk men, women, and children each year through our services. More than 124 families and 300 children live on our main campuses, and we will case-manage 740 families this year, both on and off campus. Over 400 families were prevented from becoming homeless in the last year through our prevention and diversion programs. During this Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, we will help 20,000 families in four counties, who would otherwise go without, with food and toys so that they may have hope and a reason to smile. Volunteering at the Holiday Tent Every year during the holiday season, Metropolitan Ministries constructs what has become an iconic symbol of hope in the Tampa Bay area—the Metropolitan Ministries Holiday Tent. This tent is no ordinary tent. In fact, it has grown over the years to be the size of a football field in order to accommodate more than 100,000 people who will visit during November and December. People from all walks of life come to donate, volunteer and receive services. More than 10,000 volunteers each year give their time and hearts at the holiday tent. Volunteers range in age from 12 to 90, and teachable moments are everywhere. It’s all about the community uniting for the greater good because no one should go without a holiday if we can do something about it. Metropolitan Ministries expects 20,000 hurting families that can’t afford a holiday to seek assistance this season. That number is up slightly from 18,000 families in 2017. Families in need are currently registering to receive assistance for

food and toys for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The hurt is overwhelming for moms and dads who are struggling to provide for their families. Given the choice, most would go without eating to give their children a holiday. Many are already making extreme sacrifices and there is nothing left over for traditional celebrations and gift giving. Metropolitan Ministries aims to bring Thanksgiving and Christmas to these families through services offered at the holiday tent. Because so much of the food and labor is donated, the Ministries’ cost to provide a hot meal is just $1.96. More ways to get involved Without true community collaboration, so many would be left out in the cold with no hope for a future. When individuals, businesses, corporate groups, and families volunteer and donate to Metropolitan Ministries, we are able to provide a holiday experience that is out of reach for so many hurting families in Tampa Bay. Some of the most important ways to get involved include: hosting a food or toy drive, volunteering, offering your special skill or service, being an advocate, and making a monetary donation. All of these opportunities are available and needed 365 days a year. Hope counts on you.

love MAKES A FAMILY

By Donna Krauser,

Chief of Out of Home Care at the Children’s Home Network

N

ovember is National Adoption Month, and an opportunity for all of us to reflect on family and how important it is for the community to embrace foster and adoptive parents. For many parents who are called to be a family, the pathway may be anything but traditional, as the Vandenbergs’ story demonstrates. The Vandenberg family will soon celebrate 20 years of marriage, six years of fostering, and more recently, the adoption of two brothers for a total of three adopted children from Hillsborough County’s foster care system. The Vandenbergs became foster parents in 2012, eager to make a difference in the lives of children who were victims of traumatic experiences. They made it their mission to offer each child in their care the unconditional love and support they desperately needed to heal. They worked hard to meet the individual needs of each child, including emotional and unique medical needs, such as reflux, liver disease and neurological issues. No matter the obstacle, the Vandenbergs always prioritized the best interest of each and every child. As a result, the children thrived.

Their focus was to help reconnect children with their biological families. I’m thrilled to share that out of the 10 children that the family fostered, seven have been able to return home to be with their biological families. Although the Vandenbergs had no intention of adopting, they created an unbreakable bond with three children, who became part of their forever family through adoption. For children transitioning from foster care to adoption, permanency is bigger than the word adoption. For these children, the sense of “home” means so much more. It’s a sense of belonging, feeling safe and loved, and ultimately, cared for. Permanency is having a place and people to belong to no matter what happens. It brings with it the sense of unconditional love and support, something we all need as human beings. These days, the Vandenberg family continues to thrive and grow in love and appreciation for each other. They feel as if their family is now complete with three young boys, and have decided to switch gears in foster care. The family is no longer actively fostering, but instead, is focused completely on parenting and teaching their children, prioritizing education and life experiences, and of course, advocating for foster care and adoption. For the miracle of family, the Vandenbergs, and so many others like them: Thank you for your love, sacrifice, and service, for being foster parents and for the beauty of adoption!

A

lunch box. It may seem like a small and insignificant part of a child’s day. But as a parent, you aspire to fill that box with more than just food. It represents the care that goes into preparing a meal made with love. Across Tampa Bay, 1 in 4 children deal with a hunger that they can’t understand every day. The stories of these children and their families are often overlooked, but are vital to understanding the impact that hunger has on childhood. The absence of a lunch box is more than a lost piece of childhood – it’s the absence of healthy meals. For a child, food is more than sustenance. Food fuels potential. It’s a conduit for growth, is vital for learning, and a common ground for family time. Hunger doesn’t take a break after the holiday season. It’s a year-round struggle affecting 1 in 7 of our hard-working neighbors. Feeding Tampa Bay exists to feed the potential of children and families in our community. Supported by more than 500 partner agencies, programs such as our school pantries, after school meals, backpack programs and mobile pantries are working to end hunger in Tampa Bay. When these children have access to healthy meals and consistent nourishment, they become more engaged and confident students, making them more likely to receive good grades and interact with friends and classmates. In fact, our Feeding Minds School Pantry program has been so instrumental to student success that 10 additional pantries will be opening in the 2018-19 school year. This holiday season, when you donate to Feeding Tampa Bay, you are fueling the future of children in our community.

At Feeding Tampa Bay, we are inspired by our caring community of families in this region, and we wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season. Feedingtampabay.org

Baccalaureate Primary (IB) Years Programme to guide students through stimulating units of inquiry in ways that support Dr. Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences as well as engage all learning styles.

FREE PLAY While an academic curriculum is important, valuable lessons take place on the playground. Studies have shown that active free play can improve children’s thinking skills and help them socially, emotionally and physically. They develop compassion and understanding of others during imaginative role play and learn to problem-solve during dedicated time for free play.

ENGAGING LESSONS

THAT APPEAL

INDEPENDENCE

TO A CHILD’S NATURAL

PreK is a time for children to develop independence, self-sufficiency and responsibility. Teachers may put students in charge of signing their names when they arrive as they stash their lunchboxes in their cubbies. Many classes have small jobs as well, assigning students to hold doors, lead the lines or turn off the lights. It’s important for prekindergarteners to have a safe and supportive environment to work on these new skills.

CURIOSITY INSTILL

CHILD'S PLAY CHOOSE A VIBRANT PRE-K By Courtney Cairns Pastor

W

ith oversized magnifying glasses and handmade binoculars, PreK3 students peer intently at puddles, trees and squirrels, making observations about everything they spot. The focus this week is the sense of sight, and 3-year-olds in Corbett Prep’s PreKindergarten program are on a hike around campus to see what they can see. Back in the classroom, teachers point out how our senses play different roles, asking students to think about the differences in how snacks taste in the dark or if color still exists without light. In PreK4, meanwhile, students studying body systems visit Corbett Prep’s Application Lab to peek inside the body using the augmented reality technology of zSpace. Wearing 3D glasses, the 4-yearolds examine detailed 3D images of the

circulatory and digestive systems that look so real students reach out to try to touch them. Engaging lessons that appeal to a child’s natural curiosity instill the joy of learning at a young age. The prekindergarten years are critical in preparing students academically, socially and behaviorally for kindergarten and the rest of their education. How can parents make sure their child’s preschool is up to the task? Here are some important factors to consider when looking for a great prekindergarten program.

CURRICULUM Three- and 4-year-olds will amaze you with what they are able to learn. PreK3 teachers at Corbett Prep introduce their students to famous works of art as they study how people express themselves. Parents are surprised to hear students come home talking about Degas painting ballerinas or identifying “The Starry Night” as a Van Gogh painting. Teachers in a high-quality prekindergarten program have a research-based curriculum to follow, and they make sure students are challenged beyond basic school readiness skills. Corbett Prep teachers use the International

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES Exposure to visual and performing arts, international languages and athletics in “specials” classes or extracurricular activities provides opportunities for kids to discover their natural gifts at an early age as well as appreciate the perspectives and talents of others, creating social-emotional learning lessons. Each discipline also offers specific benefits to a child’s development and confidence. Art classes, for example, improve students’ fine motor and critical thinking skills, while sports and physical education promote teamwork and develop coordination. At Corbett Prep, specials teachers often work with classroom teachers to tie what they do into the current academic unit. Music teachers brought soundwaves to life as part of the IB unit on senses, beating a drum to make grains of rice vibrate so the PreK3 students could “see” sound. A quality PreK program allows students to grow in many different ways during these critical years. When trained teachers create a warm, encouraging environment within a well-rounded curriculum, students become comfortable taking risks academically and socially. With so much to discover about their world and themselves, young students in robust prekindergarten classes gain the foundation and confidence they need for success in kindergarten and beyond. he holiday season brings with it delicious food and celebration, but it is also an important time of year to reflect, give thanks and give back. Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library supports the many ways that local charities, small businesses and entrepreneurs can give back by reaching out into the community and providing resources to help them thrive. From startups to established ventures, businesses benefit from quality informational resources and spaces to develop ideas. Hillsborough County libraries offer professional recording studios where community members can record podcasts, create presentations with Adobe Creative Cloud or Apple software, film a commercial, develop a YouTube series to build their brand, or use the green screen to capture professional headshots.

A Hillsborough County library card provides access to online business resources anywhere, any time. Through the library’s website, the community can take business classes on Lynda. com, develop targeted market research with Demographics Now, or generate sales leads with ReferenceUSA. To learn more, check the events calendar for upcoming workshops or make an appointment for Library Office Hours at the ECC. TALK TO OTHERS

RESEARCH

Several libraries host networking events geared to help small business owners and entrepreneurs expand their knowledge base, develop long-lasting partnerships, and establish their reputation in the community. The Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library hosts BizConnect the first Friday of each month at 8 a.m., and Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library hosts a partnership networking group the fourth Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. Both groups are open to anyone who wants to learn about library business resources and listen to guest speakers share their knowledge and experiences. Wednesdays at 9 a.m., entrepreneurs meet at the Hillsborough County Entrepreneur Collaborative Center (ECC) for 1 Million Cups. This is a unique opportunity for startup companies to present their ideas to an audience of peers, mentors, educators and advisors. A business librarian is also available at the ECC on Wednesdays between 1-4 p.m. to offer help with research and guidance in using the library’s resources. Individual 1-hour appointments can be scheduled by calling 813-273-3652.

The library partners with the Foundation Center to offer their grant research tools to the community for free at the John F. Germany Public Library in downtown Tampa. With Foundation Directory Online, local charities can search for grants to fund community projects or for companies that match volunteer hours with real dollars. Foundation Grants to Individuals Online opens doors to grant and scholarship opportunities to enhance career skills or fund a pilot program. Learn more on the library’s Grants & Fundraising page here http://hcplc.org/research/grants or schedule individual assistance by calling 813-273-3652.

SCHOOLS REFERENDUM | EDUCATION

INVESTING IN STUDENTS VOTE YES ON THE SALES TAX REFERENDUM

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY PTA BELIEVES YOU SHOULD SUPPORT THE SALES TAX REFERENDUM

By Alisha Stephens

The Nov. 6 ballot will include a one-half cent sales surtax referendum to raise much-needed funds for Hillsborough County Public Schools. Our schools critically need these funds to repair and replace air conditioners, fix leaky roofs and improve classroom technology and school security.

MY CHILD ATTENDS A GREAT PUBLIC SCHOOL – I DON’T SEE ANY FUNDING PROBLEMS.

Despite Florida’s public education funding being 44th in the nation, Hillsborough County Public Schools are accomplishing amazing things. Imagine what our schools could do if they received adequate funding! The underfunding of public schools has hit crisis levels and we now have over a billion dollars of deferred maintenance. We have schools that need new roofs, A/C’s, classroom technology and additional security. All our children deserve to go to school in a safe and comfortable environment for learning.

OFFICIALLY LISTED ON THE NOV. BALLOT AS NO. 3 HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY REFERENDUM: “REFERENDUM ON ONE-HALF CENT SALES SURTAX FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL AIR CONDITIONING AND CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS”

MY CHILD (WILL) ATTEND PRIVATE SCHOOL – WHY SHOULD I VOTE FOR THIS?

Public schools are one of the leading drivers of property values. In fact, according to the Wall Street Journal, home values in Florida can vary anywhere between $50,000 and $300,000 based on the neighborhood school ratings. Better schools lead to a better economy. Hillsborough County’s increased graduation rates from public schools since 2015 has had a $670 million impact on the economy.

MY CHILD ISN’T IN SCHOOL YET – HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME?

Your child stands to benefit the most from referendum funds. Our county faces a $1 billion deferred maintenance challenge that will only worsen without this referendum. Our schools are performing well despite these challenges; imagine what will be possible with optimum learning conditions and teacher working conditions.

HOW CAN I LEARN THE DETAILS ON THE REFERENDUM?

The District has created a comprehensive look at the issues that will answer almost any question you might have about the referendum. sdhc.k12.fl.us/doc/2299/investing-in-students/about/investinginstudents/

LEARN ALL ABOUT THE VIRUS YOUR BABY IS ALMOST SURE TO CATCH AT SOME POINT. By Anu Varma Panchal

Being sick yourself is no picnic. How about managing everything while your spouse huddles under a blanket sweating and shivering? No fun. And if it’s your school-age child who has the sniffles? Even worse. But dealing with a sick infant? The worst. This time of year, the flu may be on everyone’s minds as the major illness to watch out for. But there’s another culprit: RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control, RSV is a relatively common virus that causes severe lung infections, including bronchiolitis (infection of small airways in the lungs) and pneumonia (an infection of the lungs). The CDC states on its website that each year, 57,000-plus children younger than 5 are hospitalized due to RSV. It can affect the elderly as well. About 177,000 older adults are hospitalized each year with an RSV infection. Unfortunately, for about 14,000 of those older people, the infection proves fatal. Dr. John Prpich, a pediatric pulmonologist at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital explains that the seasons vary, even across the state. Miami and Jacksonville could see spikes at completely different times. This year in Tampa Bay, the

LEARN MORE Coughing or wheezing that does not stop.

season started in mid-July and is anticipated to continue through March, and it’s unusually severe. “It’s an early season this year and we saw a rapid increase in the amount of RSV cases in our community,” Dr. Prpich says. The state determines the extent of the season from positive swabs that come in from emergency room and pediatrician’s offices. In November, the rate of RSV in Florida stood at 20-25 percent. “It’s important to know that almost all kids will get RSV at least once by 3 years,” says Dr. Prpich. “It’s the most common reason worldwide that infants and toddlers are hospitalized for respiratory conditions.” How can you tell if your infant has RSV? Prpich says to look for fast breathing, “like a puppy.” If the child is coughing excessively and working hard to breathe, you want to intervene before you see a change of color. In babies 2 months and below, RSV can cause pauses in breathing called apnea, when the baby will turn “dusky” or blue, especially around the mouth or fingernails. A high fever is another concerning sign. Some children develop significantly lower respiratory tract symptoms called bronchiolitis, marked by swelling in the airway and obstruction due to mucus. Although most healthy infants, older children and adults recover fairly easily, some patients may need to be treated with oxygen and IV

fluids, and every year, some kids end up on a ventilator. Although Albuterol and steroids are commonly used in other conditions with wheezing and difficulty breathing, these don’t prove effective in helping with symptoms due to RSV. Some children who are especially at risk—such as preemies—can qualify to receive a monoclonal antibody given monthly as a preventative measure during RSV season. Another nuisance aspect of RSV—you can get it more than once in one season. Also, children who get a very significant case when they’re under 6 months may be at increased risk for further episodes of wheezing with future viruses lasting into their teenage years. The news isn’t all bad, however. Although there is no cure, prevention is low tech, easy and doable. You catch the sickness when you touch the droplets from someone’s cough or sneeze and then touch your face, nose, mouth or eyes. The virus can live for 8-12 hours on a surface. So do the following things to ensure you keep your baby safe from this disease this season: • Wash your hands—constantly!— with soap and water. • If your child is sick, don’t send them to daycare or school to spread their germs on toys and surfaces. Kids going back to school after the holidays is a major risk factor for RSV. • Use antibacterial wipes at the grocery store to wipe carts. • Newborns need bubble care. Everyone wants to touch baby, but encourage visitors to touch baby’s feet rather than her face. • If someone does get sick in your home, clean contaminated surfaces such as doorknobs, frequently.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT ALMOST ALL KIDS GET RSV BY 3 YEARS,” SAYS DR. PRPICH.

“IT’S THE MOST COMMON REASON WORLDWIDE FOR KIDS TO BE HOSPITALIZED FOR

RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS.

How do you know it's RSV? Look for these signs. Fast or troubled breathing. Gasping for breath.

A fever (especially higher than 100.4°F [rectal] in infants under 3 months of age.)

Spread-out nostrils and/or a caved-in chest when trying to breathe. istock.com/jehsomwang

THE WINERY

The winery at Cooper’s Hawk is quite possibly the crown jewel of the establishment. Producing 573,000 cases of wine each year, the wine grapes are imported from California, Washington, Oregon, and other regions to start the winemaking process. The wine list is extensive and the options are plentiful. The restaurant’s no-risk policy means that you are encouraged to taste the wine of your choosing to make sure it is what you want, or to try something new! Wines are available by the glass or by the bottle and are featured not only as a pairing with your meal, but as a dessert as well, if you so choose. Whether you stop by before or after your meal, be sure to check out the Napa-Style Tasting Room to sample the latest wine selections. No need to reserve a spot, each tasting includes 8 different samples to try anytime during your Cooper’s Hawk experience. Also unique to Cooper’s Hawk is their Barrel Wine Reserve. The Barrel Wine Reserve is reserved for the best wine grapes of the season and is only bottled once per year. What makes this so unique is that there is no formula used—the final wine is tested for flavor and texture alone. One barrel is sent to each Cooper’s Hawk restaurant nationwide for guests to enjoy. The Barrel Wine Reserve wine varies year to year, creating a unique wine experience during each annual visit.

Zucchini By Carley Boyette

While zucchini is typically a summer vegetable, because of Florida’s warm climate in the fall, zucchini is still an easy and delicious vegetable to grow well into the Fall season! What Boyette Family Farms loves most about this vegetable is all the different ways you can prepare it. Zucchini can be shaped into noodle-like spirals and used as a low-carb substitute for pasta. It can be prepared with a variety of cooking techniques, like steaming, boiling, grilling, stuffing and baking, barbecuing, frying, or incorporating in other recipes such as soufflés. However, one of our favorite and more unique ways to prepare it is in bread, similar to banana bread!

HUNGRY: A LABEL NO ONE DESERVES A lunch box. It may seem small, but to a child, it’s everything. While its absence signals the loss of a small piece of childhood, what many don’t see is the most important thing that’s missing: a healthy and nutritious meal. Every day, hundreds of thousands of children in our community are quietly struggling with this void. Their stories are often overlooked but are vital to understanding hunger in Tampa Bay.

PLACES TO VOLUNTEER AS A FAMILY By Laura Byrne and Rosie Raggio

Our list of places to volunteer as a family is one of our most popular stories each year, so we’re bringing in back just in time for the 2018 holiday season! We share stories about empathy often in the pages of our magazine because we believe it is important we teach our children to care for their neighbors. One if four children in our own community does not know where their next meal is coming from. When your child volunteers their time to sort food that will help feed a child in need, they will leave with a sense of pride but also a continued drive to serve others.

TAMPA BAY PARENTING WINS Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine earns top Florida Magazine Association awards

Maternity photography by @darlenebarlowsphotography

We are thrilled to share that we took home two Charlie Awards from the Florida Magazine Association. We placed first for Writing Excellence/Commentary/Opinion for our editorial and position statement on gun safety which was published in our April issue. It is not easy to take a stand on such divisive issues, but we felt we needed to take a position for stricter gun laws after our friends lost their niece in the school shooting in Parkland. We also took home the Silver Award for Digital Excellence/ Best Online Video for our inside look at the redesign of MOSI in Tampa. We love producing videos to show you all of the amazing things you can do together as a family in Tampa Bay. We’ll keep them coming! We will continue to work hard to promote safe and healthy families in Tampa Bay and share stories that are not only impactful, but fun!
