Imagine you’re sitting in your school’s carline, waiting to pick up your kids after a long day. Your stomach grumbles as your fingers tap the steering wheel. A teacher slides open the side door of your minivan and the kids pile inside. When you get home, the kids clamor for a snack, for dinner, for anything—they’re just hungry. You open the cabinets and the fridge only to find them empty. Your smile falls. Not knowing when your next meal will come is a terrifying feeling. And too many families in Tampa Bay experience this on a daily basis. Food gives us the opportunity to connect over a meal. Especially during the Thanksgiving season, dinner time is a sacred space for our families to gather together. More than 700,000 people in the Tampa Bay area face food insecurity, which means they lack consistent access to food, especially healthy and nutritionally adequate meals. In times of crisis, like with Hurricane Irma, this number surges. While many associate hunger with homelessness, food insecurity is not

limited by a certain type of person. They are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers – they are our neighbors, our coworkers, our gym buddies, maybe even our children’s teachers. In fact, 60 percent of people who go hungry live above the poverty line. Not everyone lives life with a safety net of thousands of dollars in savings, which means some people are just one disruption away from being food insecure, even if only for a short amount of time. At Feeding Tampa Bay, we believe it’s everyone’s right to have access to food. We work around the clock to distribute more than 40 million meals each year within the Tampa Bay region, with a special dedication to kids and seniors in need. As we move through the holiday season, please consider joining Feeding Tampa Bay in our mission to ensure that no one has to go hungry.

In Florida, foster children are paired with caring families who have made room in their hearts and their homes. In Kansas, parents work with therapists to help children learn social and emotional strategies to excel in school. In North Carolina, young boys exiting the juvenile justice system are changing their behavior and getting the training they need to productively contribute to their communities. In Georgia, displaced workers are getting licenses and certificates to help them re-enter the workforce.

Holiday shopping for a cause

Junior League’s annual market kicks off the season By Carlee Cone Bowdoin

T

he universe collided when Shelby Tuttle and I paired up in January 2016 to plan this year’s Holiday Market. As two over-achieving professionals/ moms, we had big visions from day one. We both wanted to push the envelope and make this year’s market the largest market ever. Our biggest initiative was doubling the market’s size. This year we have spilled our holiday cheer into both the Expo Hall and the Entertainment Hall, increasing the number of merchants to over 180 and adding amazing special events. It’s surreal to know all of our hard work over the past year will finally be revealed in the biggest Holiday Gift Market ever created. New events to hit the market this year are Santa Snaps, Santa’s Workshop and Hoppy Holidays. This year, Santa will camp out at the North Pole in an amazing setting for special keepsake pictures. Snaps is available on both Friday and Saturday from 3-5 p.m. We also wanted a hands-on creative experience for older children, so teams from Bricks 4 Kidz and Kraftologee will offer activities from Lego Christmas ornaments to spin art at Santa’s Workshop, which takes place Friday and Saturday from 3-5 p.m. Lastly, we wanted shoppers to have the opportunity to wind down their experience on Friday night, so we created Hoppy Holidays, where attendees can taste craft beer in commemorative glasses and nibble on scrumptious appetizers while listening to live entertainment.

The “Hoppiness” starts at 6 p.m. on Friday evening and will end at 8 p.m. It may be a good time, but the Holiday Gift Market also does good because 100 percent of its net proceeds go back to funding The Junior League of Tampa’s projects and programs. These efforts focus on improving the lives of children and families touched by the child welfare system and providing education programs that support emerging literacy, mentoring and health/ nutrition. Our event has grown so large that attendees now come from all over the state of Florida. Last year’s record-breaking attendance was over 21,000,

and this year, we intend to break that record. The Holiday Gift Market has been a Tampa Tradition since 2004, and we are excited to reveal the 14th annual Market to our entire community Nov. 9 through 12 at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo and Entertainment Hall. Tickets are still available at jltampa.org/hgm.

Filled with holiday spirit, HOLIDAY GIFT MARKET attendees strategically map out their shopping path around favorite merchants and can’tmiss special events. From Gasparilla Music Festival acts to visits from princesses, the atmosphere is filled with magic and Christmas spirit. It’s an amazing experience that involves so much more than what the community sees.

CARLEE CONE BOWDOIN is a wife, third-generation Tampa native, and mother to 3-year-old JeanAnn. She works in business management consulting for Integrity Healthcare Advisors and Bowdoin Consulting. NOVEMBER 2017 | TampaBayParenting.com 15

Do You Know What Would Happen To Your Kids If Something Happened to You?

This Story Will Break Your Heart

The answer may surprise you…

In 2006 Casey and Melanie Barber were on a summer vacation with their three children when their van blew a tire and spun out of control, resulting in a horrifying accident that left Casey and Melanie dead. Miraculously, all three of their boys survived the accident. In the aftermath of the accident there was confusion among family members concerning who would care for the children. Because the Barbers left no clear instructions, this confusion

ultimately resulted in a court battle over custody of the boys (and their inheritance) that lasted for more than a year, involved no less that 9 different attorneys and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorney and court time. In the end, the court appointed a legal guardian who may or may not have been the person who Casey and Melanie would have wanted to raise their children. We’ll never know because they never made their wishes known.

It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way for Your Family… Like many parents with minor children at home, the Barbers didn’t take the time to put a plan together that would have protected their children after their accident. “Many parents have so many questions about estate planning and feel so overwhelmed by the thought of their children being raised without them that they procrastinate and do nothing at all,” says St. Petersburg attorney, Mike Mastry. He adds, “I know how it feels, I’m a dad too.” “The most important thing that any parent can do is name a guardian for their children,” explains Mastry. “Most people don’t realize that if you don’t legally name a guardian to raise your children, then the courts will do it for you; and they may not choose the person that you would have wanted.”

system. Getting information about the basics of a good estate plan is the first step. The second step is to speak to an estate planning attorney about your unique family dynamic and your specific goals for protecting your children. They should be able to answer your questions, offer advice for how to best provide for your children, and craft a plan that meets your needs. With a good attorney, the process of estate planning shouldn't be intimidating, difficult or even time consuming. It should however be a fundamental requirement for every parent.

Every loving parent understands the need to have a plan in place should something happen to them. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misunderstanding surrounding wills, trusts, and the court

Are You Living with A False Sense of Security? A Parent’s Lack of Knowledge and Misunderstanding About Estate Plans and Wills Can End Up Hurting Their Children

In this free report, A Parent’s Guide to Protecting Your Children Through Estate Planning, we reveal the most frequently asked questions that we hear from parents of minor children, and the questions that parents should be asking to best protect their children. In this report, you will discover: • The legal documents that every parent must have to best protect their children; • Important documents that most estate planning attorneys rarely discuss with their clients; • How to choose the right guardian for your children; and • As a bonus, we show you how to choose the right estate planning attorney for families who have children at home. How hunger impacts families in Tampa Bay By Thomas Mantz, Executive Director, FEEDING TAMPA BAY

“I’ve been judged because I don’t look poor enough.” This is what Carol, a mom with a special-needs son, experienced when she visited a local pantry for food assistance. She looks like any other mom you’d meet. She has a home. Her husband works fulltime as an electrician. But their family can’t always afford both food and the expensive health and behavioral care her son requires. “I used to work as a special education teacher, until they found a tumor in my leg,” Carol shared. After fighting a hard battle with cancer, she wasn’t able to return to work. At the same time, her son’s needs for specialized care intensified. Carol’s plight mirrors what many parents, children and seniors experience on a daily basis – the tough choice of being able to afford food or paying for other critical expenses. Over 700,000 people in the Tampa Bay Area alone fight hunger on a day-to-day basis. And the hungry most often don’t fit the stereotypical mold of homelessness or extreme poverty. Food insecurity is rising most quickly in the suburbs, where owning a home and a car are a necessity, but 18 TampaBayParenting.com | NOVEMBER 2017

can also put people in precarious financial situations. Feeding Tampa Bay exists to shorten the line of people who need food assistance, giving them the necessary nutritious meals to feed themselves and their families. Every month, the organization delivers more than 3 million meals locally, but that only fills about half of the need. Approximately 60 percent of people who battle hunger live above the poverty line, meaning food insecurity could impact our neighbors, our coworkers and even our friends. There are elderly who have to choose between buying food and paying for their prescription refills. There are parents who have to choose between paying for their children’s education and putting food on the table. There

are college students who have to choose between buying their textbooks for class and eating healthy meals three times per day. Another local mom, Keta, relies on Feeding Tampa Bay to help provide for her two young daughters when finances get tight. Keta is a single parent. “My biggest fear is for my girls to go without,” Keta said. “I just want to give them everything, and I want them to be healthy, happy and believe in themselves.” She previously had to resort to hoping canned goods and boxes of cereal would last when her paycheck didn’t go as far as she thought. But through Feeding Tampa Bay, Keta can feed her children the fresh fruits and nutritious proteins to keep them growing strong.

In this season of giving, here are three things you can do to become a hunger hero and take a stand against food insecurity.

1 SHARE WHAT YOU LEARNED. Half of the fight against hunger is simply awareness. Hunger is often an invisible issue, as those experiencing it don’t like talking about it. You can give them a voice by helping advocate for Feeding Tampa Bay’s mission on social media. 2 VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME. Feeding Tampa Bay has many different volunteer opportunities, from warehouse food sorting to community food distributions. The organization even hosts a monthly “family night,” where kids of all ages can participate in the cause. Sign up at FeedingTampaBay.org. 3 DONATE TO THE CAUSE. Every $6 given to Feeding Tampa Bay will feed one person for a month. The organization gathers food that likely would end up in a landfill from retail stores and restaurants, then delivers it to the communities that need it most. Ride

You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy a kid a bike, and that’s pretty close.

By Merris Pope

D

o you remember receiving your first bike? Or the excitement and freedom you felt as a kid riding your bike down the street in the fresh air? At onbikes, the mission is to create that feeling of pure joy among kids in our community. Onbikes is a nonprofit organization that builds and delivers new bicycles and helmets to local at-risk and foster children, primarily raising funds through an annual city-wide bike ride called The Winter Wonder Ride. Onbikes was formed in 2011 when a group of friends organized a community bike ride during the winter holiday season to raise funds so at-risk kids could receive their very first bike. It has grown significantly since then, and Sarah Breseman, recently appointed executive director, intends to keep the momentum going. “I'm honored to have joined the onbikes team and look forward to helping further this amazing cause. Onbikes is truly special in that not only do we provide at-risk and foster kids with their very first brand new bike, but we offer a fun and unique way for our community to get involved. Everyone remembers the day they got their first bike. We believe every child deserves to have that moment and we aim to create that for as many kids in our community as possible.” Since 2011, onbikes has built and donated over 3,500 bicycles to children in need while

aiming to restore the self-confidence, health and overall well-being of those kids in our community. The expressions on the children’s faces when they receive their bike is unforgettable, and though it may seem like a small gesture, it makes a very real difference in the world of a child. There are two ways to get involved: The annual bike build where hundreds of volunteers gather at Amalie Arena to put together new bikes that will be delivered to the kids, and the annual bike ride where thousands of people gather to celebrate the cause. Each December, onbikes hosts

a holiday-themed bike ride at Curtis Hixon Park where riders assemble dressed as snowmen, reindeer or elves to bike through downtown Tampa, cruise along beautiful Bayshore Boulevard and reconvene at the park for a post-ride celebration. This year, the Dec 9 Winter Wonder Ride theme is “Ho! Ho! Ho!” So get your tickets, bikes and Santa hats ready. Headliner acts are scheduled for after-ride entertainment and everyone’s invited, so make sure to tell your family and friends. If you’re interested in volunteering, want to learn more about onbikes or want to purchase tickets to The Winter Wonder Ride, visit onbikes.org.

Holiday Help 5 WAYS TO GET INVOLVED AT METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Imagine what it would feel like to tell your children that there’s nothing to eat today. That’s exactly what thousands of struggling moms and dads in the Tampa Bay region are facing when they come to Metropolitan Ministries for holiday assistance. For them, hunger is a constant companion. At Metropolitan Ministries HOPE starts with a meal and leads to life change. This year, the Ministries expects to serve 18,000 families throughout Tampa Bay this holiday season. Many are experiencing elongated hardships because of Hurricane Irma’s impact. They invite you to join the BE HOPE campaign and visit their holiday tent in this season of giving. Here are five ways to get involved:

METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES

is a local, independent, faithbased nonprofit committed to providing hope. They’ve been doing it since 1972 through services for poor and homeless families in Tampa Bay.

holiday into a joyful experience. Most needed items include: canned yams, canned fruit, cereal, starches, stuffing and turkeys. New gifts for infants and teens are always a great need during Christmas time. Or shop in Metro’s online store to give most need items.

Ministries’ mission. Cater your next office party with Inside the Box today or stop by Dough Nation for a deliciously divine cookie dough sundae! All information on Inside the Box can be found on itbcafe.org while all Dough Nation information can be found on doughnationtampa.org.

Volunteering at Metropolitan Ministries offers you the opportunity to see The Ministries’ mission at face value. Volunteers are crucial in the non-profit world and especially in an operation like the Holiday Tent – it’s the size of a football field. Be Hope today in a multitude of areas including food shopping with families, toy shopping with families, serving in the hospitality area, receiving donations, sorting non-perishable food and sorting toys and gifts. You can volunteer as an individual, group or family.

AMAZON SMILE

DONATE OR SHOP ON THE WEBSITE

Did you know you can help Metropolitan Ministries while doing your online Christmas shopping? AmazonSmile is a great way to accomplish two things on your checklist. When you purchase an eligible item on AmazonSmile, 0.5 percent of your purchase will go to the charity of our choice. We hope you choose Metropolitan Ministries this season!

HOST A DRIVE

By supporting the Ministries’ social enterprises, Inside the Box, or their new shop, Dough Nation, you are directly supporting Metropolitan

At Metropolitan Ministries, because most of the food is donated, just $1.96 will feed one person. #BeHope this season and give what you can via a monetary gift or shopping online in our store. Join Metropolitan Ministries for #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving on Nov. 28, and be a part of the movement. Each gift is matched now through Dec. 31., so your gift has double the impact! Another way to give is to create a Facebook fundraiser for the Ministries – invite your friends!

VOLUNTEER

Hope is in your hands this holiday season. By hosting a drive for essential food and gifts, you can literally change a family’s

What Play Teaches | Education

SPONSORED

PLAY TEACHES EMPATHY Pretending helps children form and appreciate relationships as they create scenarios to act out together and consider how their imagined characters will interact. The act of pretending also increases empathy as students take on roles of people different from themselves. Imaginative play can also help kids overcome fears, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, as children create fantasy worlds where they rule and conquer scary situations.

PLAY PREPARES YOUR BRAIN TO LEARN Research shows that fidgeting increases before recess and decreases afterward. A couple of minutes of singing, dancing, jumping jacks or games pays off by getting your blood flowing and more oxygen to your brain. Longer breaks, such as recess, boost attention and improve behavior.

Research shows that what looks like simple fun is actually crucial to students’ social and cognitive development. When children make up stories, they develop skills such as executive function, which helps them regulate emotions and demonstrate self-control. From spirited games of tag on the playground to imaginative role-playing in history class, play has an important role in what and how students learn.

where careers will be when considering new magnets. Magnet programs also include visual, performing and communication arts. International Baccalaureate programs, known for academic rigor, are magnets; many graduates go on to Ivy League colleges. SDHC has four primary level IBs. Lauren D’Aloia, a teacher at MacFarlane Park, believes that freedom, diversity, and passion set magnets apart. “Along with the rigor of magnet schools, comes children learning grit at a young age,” D’Aloia says. Melissa Mousseau, IB high school teacher, says: “my students hear or see something once and own that information.” A magnet education is an exploratory process.

ATTRACTOR PROGRAMS Grayson Kamm, SDHC’s Communications and Media Officer, explains choice schools as “focused academies” with attractor programs. Series of courses and projects flow from an attractor topic, and electives are deep dives into that topic. Programs sometimes grow organically—a large concentration of teachers with a particular degree realizes the potential for an attractor. HAIRBANDS As a busy mom, my hair is usually out of my face, especially with the humid weather here in Tampa. Whether it’s a cute hair tie or bobby pins, these are must-haves in my bag!

MANTRA FITNESS WATER BOTTLE AND TOWEL Exercise is my therapy and I am addicted to Mantra Fitness, the boutique fitness studio in South Tampa, where I burn 500-800 calories per session on their Megaformer. Think Pilates on steroids! My Mantra water bottle is always filled and my colorful Mantra towel is always available to help me cool off.

TRADER JOE’S MINTS AND LOLLIPOPS When the kids get cranky and need a little treat, I reach for my Trader Joe’s lollipops. Considering I shop there multiple times a week, my stash is always filled. This mama also likes her treats and their green tea infused mints are perfect to pop in my purse and my mouth.

When I need to distract the kids and I don’t want them on electronics, cards are an easy way to keep them busy. Whatever can make my life easier and my kids less bored and grouchy while doing errands will live in my bag.

LIP GLOSS It may look like my lip gloss collection is all the same color but it’s like black shoes. You can never have enough. They add a pretty sheen that makes me feel a little bit human as a busy mom.

BANDAGES With three boys, we go through a lot of bandages. I love these emoji™ anti-bacterial bandage strips and assorted shapes from CVS. It’s amazing how a poop emoji can cure a microscopic booboo and a huge meltdown.

Pumpkin Mac-n-cheese

A perfect kid-friendly Thanksgiving side dish!

We’ve seen the recipes on Pinterest and often make homemade mac and cheese using other veggies like cauliflower and butternut squash, so we decided to give pumpkin a try. We are so glad we did! We changed the recipe (since we didn’t have the exact ingredients), but our version of pumpkin mac ‘n cheese turned out better than expected! It’s definitely preschooler and busy-parentapproved!

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound of pasta (we used large shells) 1 ½ cup whole milk ½ cup heavy whipping cream 3 tablespoons flour 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter 1 cup shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese 1 15-ounce can of pureed pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste

PREPARATION:

1. Boil water and cook pasta until al dente. Drain and set aside. Toss the pasta with a bit of olive oil to keep it from sticking together. 2. In a separate pot, heat milk and whipping cream over medium high heat and whisk in flour until the mixture is smooth. 3. Whisk in butter, nutmeg, salt, pepper and then slowly stir in the cheeses until smooth. Add pumpkin and stir. 4. Fold in pasta and serve as is or pour into casserole dish and top with a mixture of ¼ cup of panko and ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese 5. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

3

"Easy as Pie" Pumpkin Spice Yogurt Dip INGREDIENTS:

½ cup whole milk Greek yogurt ½ cup pumpkin puree 1 tablespoon maple syrup ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

PREPARATION:

1. Combine all four ingredients in a bowl until well incorporated. 2. Chill in refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes and serve with dippers like sliced apples, graham crackers, bananas and/or ginger snap cookies. 3. For added protein or change in flavor, fold ½ cup of room temperature peanut butter into the dip mix. NOVEMBER 2017 | TampaBayParenting.com 55

Healthy Food Choices | Health + Wellness

SERVE UP MODERATION Demonstrating moderation is a key ingredient in supporting positive child-food relationships. Kids can sometimes take pre-packaged snack bars to school, but the benefits of including fresh, canned or cooked-from-frozen produce take the win. Sample notes, “The long-term, positive effects of consuming fruits and vegetables, organic or not, far outweigh a diet lacking those foods.” Don’t feel bad about letting them sometimes have the school’s pizza lunch. Those days, focus on healthier choices at other meals. When feeding high fat and sodium foods at home, Sample recommends adding cucumbers or apples: “It will help them feel fuller for longer and provide plenty of vitamins,

RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEOPLE MATTER. RELATIONSHIPS WITH FOOD MATTER, TOO.

By Tara Payor, Ph.D. , Teacher Educator

When talking about relationships with people, we understand the importance of supporting healthy ones. Is that the case with food relationships? As parents, we must understand that (a) children learn from our relationship with food and (b) we play a significant role in nurturing a positive child-food relationship. November kicks off a series of holidays where food takes center stage. The time is ripe for refocusing on healthy choices—like striking a balance between candy corn and that kernel variety. I had the chance to speak with Rachel Sample, a registered dietician and licensed nutritionist at Tampa General Hospital, and she weighed in with some expert advice. Her insight packs extra punch since she’s also a healthy mom to two strapping boys.

minerals and fiber.” Treats abound during holidays, but over-restricting isn’t necessary. Sample believes leading by example reinforces moderation. After trick-ortreating, “Kids don't need access to a full bag of Halloween loot.” For holidays like Thanksgiving, she recommends offering kids small portions of the varied foods around the table.

CUTTING FRUSTRATION As parents, we must remain aware of the fact that children learn from our attitudes

and reactions. What do we do to keep frustration at bay as we try, for the umpteenth time, to offer a vegetable? Be realistic, Sample suggests. “Rather than starting with brussel sprouts, try sweet potato chunks or cooked carrots—even avocado.” A perk for busy parents, canned veggies are okay. “Health benefits of vegetables

TAMPA’S FAVORITE SCIENCE VENUE IS READY FOR ITS GRAND REOPENING!

After a 90-day renovation project, the new MOSI is ready to reopen its doors Nov. 18! While many things have changed at the new MOSI, the location hasn’t yet. MOSI is still located at 4801 East Fowler in Tampa while plans for an eventual move to Downtown Tampa in 2022 take shape. “A renovation project with a tight schedule from start to finish is always a challenge,” says MOSI Chief Operating Officer Rob Lamke. “It has really been a labor of love as we transition

from one building into another on campus, adding new visuals, exhibits and interactive displays. I am happy to report that MOSI’s renovation is on schedule and we are looking forward to welcoming the community back in.” The New MOSI will have many of your old favorites such as Bed of Nails, the Hurricane Machine, IdeaZone, Mission Moon Base and Slippery Science – the Tampa Bay Lightning themed and sponsored exhibit. It will also open a new exhibit experience called

CONNECTUS, where guests can see and feel the future with many state-of-art displays and technologies. The exhibit also shows the ongoing commitment MOSI has to being the community leader in STEM and STEAM programs. To improve the guest experience, areas of the New MOSI will be specifically themed and named. “Journey Through the Skies” will feature space and weather themed exhibits. “I Wonder” provides a core science experience with hands-on physics, optics, math and more. “A Look Inside” showcases nutrition and the human body. In addition to the new exhibit space, MOSI plans on launching “MOSI in Motion” in 2018. This expansion of its current educational outreach program has the goal of bringing 1,350 high-quality in-school science experiences a year to Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Hardee, Desoto and Manatee Counties. Working directly with schools and school districts, MOSI will provide an all-day hands-on science experience to students and teachers. The new MOSI promises to deliver an exciting environment for fun and connecting the community to science and art. Family Fun | Flying with Kids

Flying

with Kiddos TIPS TO KEEP THEM HAPPY ON BOARD

By Anna Tataris De Jesus

If you’re flying with kids, you might worry they’ll spend the whole flight screaming or running up and down the aisles. It’s one of the biggest concerns other parents express to me. If you are one of them, let me ease your worries. We have flown to Europe countless times and once we are there, we take multiple commuter flights. Here’s what I’ve learned: The most important thing is being prepared, prepared and more prepared! Just remember to pack patience too for those times when things don’t go as planned.

1.

TIME OF FLIGHT

I plan my trips when it’s time for my kids to sleep. If we are going on a long flight or an international flight, I pick an evening departure. I put my kids in their pajamas so they are comfortable. We then keep our routine by first eating dinner on board and then reading a book or an activity until it’s time for them to sleep. The sound of the plane works perfectly as white noise.

2.

ACTIVITY BACKPACK

3.

FOOD

This is where being prepared really pays off. I pack a backpack for each kid that includes earphones, coloring books, crayons, blank construction paper, activity workbooks and an iPad or tablet with a movie ready to go. Don’t assume the plane will have a movie. Even if it does, it might be in a location the kids can’t see it. Having a movie ready to go is a great way to keep them calm in their seats.

My husband and I always make sure the kids have food packed from snacks to dinner. We also take their kids cups empty so that once we are through security I can buy water or milk to fill them. I pack their dinner for a couple of reasons. Not only is plane food not always appetizing for kids, it can sometimes takes an hour before it’s served. The last thing you want is hungry cranky kids. Think of easy items like pasta or their favorite sandwich. I also pack a lot of snacks. If you have an infant or toddler

you can take formula, breast milk or juice on board. You just have to let the TSA agents know you have it at the screening check points.

4.

EARS

5.

GAMES

Keep in mind little ones don’t know how to swallow to prevent the pressure from hurting their ears when taking off. So when I was nursing my babies, I always had my nursing cover ready to go in my purse. If you have a window seat it’s a little bit easier to manage, but nursing during take off has always worked for me. It helps comfort them and keeps their ears from hurting. If you’re worried about what others think, I assure you that I don’t think anyone ever even noticed because I had my cover and they are focused on taking off. Now that my kids are older, I make sure they have cups with a straw so they can drink to help clear their ears.

Just like us, sometimes kids get nervous about flying. A good way to ease anxiety is playing games with them. This can start before you even take the trip. Use your imagination to make up a flying game in your living room, let your kids pretend to be the pilot or a flight attendant. Let them tell guests where they are

flying to or let them serve snacks. You can also take small games on board or play “I spy” once you’re seated.

6.

MEDICINE

We never know when our kiddos are going to start running a fever or feel sick. That’s why I always have a plastic storage bag that includes a thermometer and any medicine I might need. Make sure the liquid amounts abide by the TSA guidelines. It also comes in handy to have a medicine bag if you are visiting a foreign country. Many places in Europe do not carry the same kind of medicine we use here, like children’s Tylenol or ibuprofen. The last thing you want to do is try out a medicine you’ve never used in a place you’ve never been before. If you’re going overseas, be sure to tell your pediatrician about the trip and check their schedule. I once had to call our pediatrician from Greece when my daughter got sick with a fever while traveling. The pediatrician talked me through what to do and she was just fine.

7.

SANITIZER/WIPES

When flying, there’s one item I never leave behind, and that’s hand sanitizer and wipes. The first thing I do when boarding a plane is wiping down any spot my kids will be touching: tray tables, seat beat buckles and arm rest.
