SIMPLE STEPS TO OvErcOME SEParaTIOn anxIETy

It’s the moment every parent of a small child dreads: the good-bye. For parents of young children, it can be a gut-wrenching, heart wrenching, guilt-ridden moment full of tears, protests, and quick getaways.

as to follow their parents into every room all day long. It can be both frustrating and sad for parents when they feel as though they are causing their children sadness. There are ways to make saying bye-bye a bit easier for you and your child.

Separation anxiety can ruin your workday, put a damper on your rare dinner out, and keep you Bring out the blankie: Transitional objects, chained to your toddler. Ask your sitter to come early: Whether you’re leaving your baby for a dinner date with your spouse or you have hired an in-home sitter to watch your little one while you’re at work, leaving him in the hands of someone else can be stressful for both you and your baby. Even though you may not realize it, your child picks up on the anxiety you are feeling, and it will affect his reaction as well. To give you both peace of mind, be sure to spend some time with the sitter and your child before leaving. This will help your baby to see that the sitter is someone he can trust and will help both he and your sitter get to know one another. If you are relaxed and happy about the situation, your child is much more likely to be as well. Leave on a happy note: Every parent has done the sneaky slip out the door in hopes of making a tearless getaway. Actually this is doing more harm than good. Just because she doesn’t see you leave doesn’t mean she won’t eventually notice your absence. In order to alleviate separation anxiety, you want to make sure your child is associating happy thoughts with your comings and goings. It’s hard to see your child cry but if you continue to sneak off, she’ll become even more worried that you might disappear at any moment. Let her see you leave, even if it triggers the waterworks, and make sure there is a fun activity in place for her to take part in immediately following your departure. It may take a few tries, but eventually she’ll begin to associate your leaving with emotions other than anxiety and sadness. Ditch the guilt: There aren’t many things that pull at your heartstrings more than having to leave a crying child who is reaching out for you. You want to be there for your child but there are times when you just can’t. And it’s not healthy for either of you if you constantly feel trapped. Remind yourself that this is a stage and you both will get through it. You aren’t a bad parent for leaving your child in tears. In fact, your efforts are working to raise a healthy, independent adult. Don’t minimize her experience by getting resentful or angry if she goes into a tirade when you leave. It’s quite normal to feel at peace with your child’s neediness at one moment and then to feel agitated and overwhelmed the next. Try to find ways to balance your need for her independence with her need to expand her world and feel safe. You’ll both be the better for it. Another important thing for parents to remember is that their anxiety can be contagious. The more anxious you are about leaving or about others caring for your little one, the more anxious she will be. Be calm, confident and reassuring. And when you return, take time to enjoy the warm welcome and extra hugs. Being apart makes reuniting that much sweeter. T

he college basketball season will soon begin, and it will be the first season in almost a century that begins without its greatest coach being here to follow it. For it was last spring that John Wooden, “The Wizard of Westwood,” passed away just a few months shy of his 100th birthday. All of us who have ever coached young people admire and strive to emulate this great coach. And it’s really not because he won more NCAA championships than anyone else. Rather, it’s because of the masterful job he did of motivating and changing forever the lives of the young people fortunate enough to come into contact with him, whether it was in his high-school English classrooms in Dayton, Ky., or South Bend, Ind., or on the hardwood of the famous Pauley Pavilion at UCLA. Wooden taught much, much more to his students than basketball. He was, like the best teachers and coaches, a master teacher about life and the search for success. Though Wooden won many championships in his long career – 10 NCAA basketball championships in 12 years – he never measured success by wins and losses. Rather, he had a simple, but very challenging definition of success that is something I would like all students and young people to know and truly internalize. Success, Wooden felt, “is the peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” Success is the feeling that comes from knowing

you did your very best. It’s not about who drives the hottest car, has the coolest clothes or vacations or has the most money. The person who is successful has the peace of mind that comes from knowing she did her best. In his many years as a teacher and coach, Wooden developed a blueprint for success. He called it the Pyramid of Success. It’s based on:

Industriousness – Hard Work: There

is no substitute for this, whether it’s in your sport, art, music, dance, writing, or school work. Hard work is truly the best building block for success.

Friendship and Cooperation: These are

often overlooked keys, but almost all success requires that you relate well to others. Knowing how to give and take is crucial. “Listen if you want to be heard. Be interested in finding the best way, not in having your own way.”

Loyalty: To yourself and to all those depending on you. Keep your self-respect. Enthusiasm: It brushes off on those with whom you come into contact. It’s easy as a youngster or teenager to “dis” enthusiasm, but the older you get, the cooler it gets.

If you wonder trust

who you can with your ch

ildren,

we have the answer. We provide customized solutions that fit your family’s individual needs. Every nanny is put through a rigorous background check and all are CPR trained. And we’re always there when you need us, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At Nanny Poppinz we understand, because we’re moms too.

............................................................................................................................................................................... Alertness: Be observing constantly. Stay openminded. Be eager to learn and improve. Initiative: Cultivate the ability to make decisions

and think alone. Do not be afraid of failure, but learn from it.

Intentness: Set a realistic goal. Concentrate on

its achievement by resisting all temptations and being determined and persistent. For all students, whether you are an athlete or not, you need to know that how you play the game of life really matters. Grades dishonestly achieved hold no glory. Rewards without true achievement are hollow and meaningless. Striving to always do your best, even though you may fall short, will bring lasting rewards, great satisfaction and success. Wooden tells us, “For me, how you play the game – and prepare for it – really does count. In fact, it counts most of all. Why? Because even winning can become routine. Striving ceaselessly to get better and better and better – and doing it – never becomes routine.” Coach Wooden is now gone. But his values live on. All of the coaches and teachers who touch the lives of our children can learn a great deal from this humble man and his timeless wisdom. Here are some of my favorite inspirational quotes from “The Wizard of Westwood”: “Respect every opponent, but fear none.” “The best way to improve your team is to improve yourself.” “Be quick, but do not hurry.” “It is amazing how much we can accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit.” “Time spent getting even would be better spent getting ahead.” “It is never simply a case of win or lose, because I do not demand victory. The significance of the score is secondary to the importance of finding out how good you can be.” “Talent is God-given; therefore be humble Fame is human-given; therefore be thankful. Conceit is self-given; therefore be careful.” The world of sports and the world in general can certainly become better if we consider the wisdom of Coach John Wooden, 1910-2010. With the fate of community gardens in the hands of the Tampa City Council, members of the Seminole Heights Community Gardens have been living in fear. However, they now have new hope after receiving a check for $500 from the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club in honor of World Food Day. The GFWC is the first honorary sponsor. “It is our hope that other woman’s clubs will follow in our footsteps and support the gardens sustainability efforts,” says Patricia Murphy, conservation community project coordinator. “My grandmother in-law ran a successful nursery and maintained a half acre personal garden in Colorado until her death at age 92. Her commitment to local growers is part of what inspires me to support Seminole Heights in their efforts to grow organic fruits and vegetables.” Scott and Patricia Murphy also pledged to provide wigwams for the bean and pea crops, increasing the donation to $750. GFWC says its experience with community gardens has taught that they provide a catalyst for neighborhood and community development, stimulate social interaction, beautify neighborhoods, produce nutritious food, reduce family food budgets, conserve resources, create opportunities for recreation, exercise, therapy and education and provide opportunities for intergenerational and cross-cultural connections. cause for alarm

...................... By Amy Gall

Make fire safety priority in your home

D

oes your family have an escape plan in case of fire? You should. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fires and burns are the third leading cause of fatal home injury.

In 2009, fire departments responded to 377,000 residential fires in the United States, which claimed the lives of 2,565 people and injured another 13,050. Fires can start easily, spread rapidly and intensify quickly. In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can turn into a major fire. In just minutes, a house can fill with thick black smoke and become engulfed in flames. Rebecca Kynes, an injury prevention expert at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, reminds parents that no matter how or where a fire starts, installing a smoke alarm is the first step toward keeping your family safe. “Smoke alarms are one of the best safety devices you can use to protect your family and your home from fire,” Kynes says. “Installing a smoke alarm on every level of your house and outside of each sleeping area reduces the chance of dying in a fire by nearly half. Be sure to test smoke alarms every month and replace batteries once a year.” Preparing your home for an emergency and teaching

children about the dangers of fire and how to matches, lighters, candles or gasoline. escape also can help prevent tragedy. • Be sure to set a good example. Never smoke in bed or disconnect smoke alarm batteries. “There are time-tested ways to prevent and survive a fire,” Kynes says. “It’s not a question of luck. It’s Inspect and Eliminate Hazards a matter of preparation.” • Never leave cooking food unattended on Plan and Practice • Identify two escape routes out of each room of the house. • Assign an adult to each child, regardless of age. This is especially vital for infants or children with special health care needs or mobility problems, and teens who can easily sleep through an alarm. • Practice fire drills at least twice a year. “Run through the exercise so the kids learn to leave quickly and not react by hiding in a closet or under the bed,” Kynes says. • Designate an outside meeting place so all members of the family can be accounted for quickly.

the stove.

• Place candles in a safe location away from combustible materials and where children or pets cannot tip them over. Never leave a burning candle unattended. • Store all flammable liquids such as gasoline outside of the home. • Keep at least one or more fire extinguishers in your home. • Plug electric space heaters into outlets with enough capacity, and never into extension cords. Place space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can catch fire such as curtains or papers, and always turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

Teach Safety • Children should know the sound of the smoke alarm. When they hear it, teach them to get outside quickly and crawl low if there is smoke.

• Replace old or frayed electrical wires and appliance cords and keep them on top of, not beneath rugs.

• Touch doors with the back of your hand before opening them. If the door is hot, use an alternative exit.

• Take special care during the holiday season, when trees, lights and candles are in use.

• Have chimneys cleaned and inspected once a year.

BEFORE

the secret to happiness

............................................

By Dr. Matthew B. James

Find your joy and it will spread

R

ecently, my 11-year-old and I were talking about what parents want most for our children. I explained to him that the big three I hear all the time in my workshops are wanting our children to be happy, wanting our kids to be successful and wanting our children to be good people. I went on to explain to my son that, unfortunately, you can’t be in charge of someone else’s happiness or success. In fact, the only thing that you can truly be in charge of is whether your kids are good. At end of the day, everyone needs to be in charge of whether or not they are successful. I can teach my son certain things and show him certain techniques that will help him be successful. After all, I teach these in my trainings and many of my students have become very successful. However, ultimately to become successful one must practice these techniques. And, by that time, he will be older than 18 and his success will be in his hands. With happiness it is the same way. It would make everyone’s life easier if they had control over other people’s emotions. I am a father, a teacher and a boss. If I could make my kids, students and employees happy with a wave of a wand, that would be great. However, it doesn’t work that way. I explained to my son that, even as kids, we all have to be in charge of our own happiness in life.

our conversation gravitated back toward happiness. My son discussed how he works hard at making people happy. He explained how he wants to make his teacher happy with his grades and work, he wants to make his parents happy with his behavior and he wants to make his friends happy while he is with them. In fact, it seemed this was a good portion of his day. And yet he said he was not happy.

happy, something we obviously can’t do. We do it because we want to see other people happy all around us. But the paradox is, the harder we try, the more miserable we get. Others pick up on these negative feelings and the process just keeps spiraling down.

Question: Why not just be happy yourself and do what makes you happy? Then other people will As a parent, I might have a misconception that I have see that you are happy and respond to your joy. If control over my kids and could make them be happy. people do this with the goal of seeing others happy, However, I know I don’t have that level of control then this would work. All we have to do is be happy over my friends and students. So I asked my son if ourselves to begin that process. he has that level of influence (like a parent has with a child) with his friends and teachers. He of course So my thinking, with everything I’ve learned in said “no.” I also asked him, “what do you think your psychology and communication skills, is that we friends want?” He responded that they want him to should all give up trying to make other people happy because it’s impossible to have that level of control be happy. over someone else. If we instead begin to focus on So I told him: “You don’t have any influence over being happy ourselves, then I believe we will begin others to force them to be happy. And if you spend to see happy people all around us. all your time trying to make someone else happy and then fail, it makes you unhappy. Here you are wanting Give it a try. It could start a happy epidemic. to make others happy, only to be unhappy in the Matthew B. James, MA, Ph.D., is president of Kona process.” My son agreed! University. His new book, The Foundation of Huna: I think we all experience this in our lives. We spend Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times details forgiveness and all this time miserably trying to make other people meditation techniques used in Hawaii for hundreds of years.

Ultimately, as a parent, I think I’m only going to have a true influence over whether or not he is a good person. I can talk about being polite and having respect. I can assist in changing behaviors and that is my focus. Yet

pproximately 160,000 children miss school every day in the United States for fear of being bullied. More than 50 suicides have been linked to prolonged bullying and about 85 percent of school shootings have revenge against bullies as a major motive.

particularly traumatized may go on to develop a specific type of anxiety disorder called, post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD is usually brought on by a terrifying physical or emotional event or series of events. Some of the symptoms of PTSD include trouble sleeping, withdrawal from normal activities, a lack of concentration and emotional numbness.

School-related bullying has led to depression and poor school performance in many children. The costs of bullying are high, but, unfortunately, many children suffer alone, keeping their bullying experiences to themselves. Many children are taught that it is a sign of weakness to ask for help and frequently fail to tell anyone when they are being bullied. Many children feel shame and assume, “Something must be wrong with me. Why else would they target me?”

When children are suffering from PTSD, they are prone to develop strong physical symptoms in situations where they feel unsafe and in danger. They appear disconnected from others, and they experience an intense physical response from their nervous system that involves angry outbursts, jumpiness and hyper alertness. This reaction is the nervous system’s response to potential danger, whether real or imagined, creating constriction, disassociation and helplessness in order to protect the body.

Children who are bullied are at risk for developing a number of emotional difficulties, including depression and anxiety symptoms. Children who are

when attacked or put under pressure. These traumatized children then bring this frozen state of helplessness to many other situations that they perceive as threatening throughout their lives. And the more withdrawn these children become, the more fearful and helpless they feel and the stronger the likelihood that they will slip into serious emotional trouble. Parents need to be aware of the warning signs when their children are experiencing depression, severe anxiety, or PTSD that may be due to bullying. Here are some red flags for parents. • Is your child disconnecting from people and isolating herself in their room? Although teens usually separate from the family, they normally connect more often with their friends. • Has your child developed physical problems such as stomachaches and headaches that interfere with their life? • Has your child’s schoolwork recently suffered and is it difficult for your child to concentrate? • Does your child have trouble falling or staying asleep or experience frequent nightmares? • Does your child seem listless, unenthusiastic, and disinterested in life? • Have you noticed that your child seems hyper vigilant, extremely nervous, depressed, or emotionally explosive (beyond the normal teenage angst and moodiness)? If you suspect your child is suffering from any of the above symptoms and they are interfering with his life and you have not been able to help alleviate his suffering, you should consider having your child evaluated by a licensed psychologist, licensed marriage and family counselor or licensed social worker. If you can’t afford to pay for private therapy sessions, many cities have low-cost therapy clinics. Check with your city or county department of mental health. Extraordinary woman

...................................... By anGELa ardOLInO

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.

Born in Miami to a Cuban mother and American father, Gina Midyett grew up in a bilingual home with her four siblings. Her parents, both educators, instilled a love of teaching, learning and helping others. Midyett has continued that tradition, working first as a teacher and now as a psychotherapist, marriage and family therapist and master hypnotherapist. The former Miss Cuba, who has a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in clinical psychology, has developed a holistic approach to treating clients and works with underprivileged families. In January, Midyett and Jill Hinegardner began Life Focus Group. A contracted psychotherapist with The Children’s Home in Pinellas County, she provides mental health counseling to children and their families. She also works with Suncoast Health Center, providing counseling for accident victims. A longtime fitness buff, Midyett found her perfect match in husband Matt, owner of Powerhouse Gym in downtown Tampa. The lights of their lives are their two children, Matthew, 3, and Victoria, 2. What do you think your secret to success is? I think my secret to success has been not letting any difficulties or negativity that has entered my life bring me down. I have been able to pick myself up and continue to face life full force despite any challenges. I also believe the saying “treat others the way you would like to be treated” is something I have followed and has helped me be successful in life. The one word that describes me is perseverance. Once I set my goals, I stay focused and work very hard to accomplish it. Success doesn’t come without hard work. What is your biggest fear? My biggest fear is that our leaders will make wrong decisions and my children will be subjected to a world with less peace and stability. What goals do you have for your future-Tampa’s future? My goal is to raise two amazing children and to continue to run my practice and help people find solutions to their problems and lead

healthier lives. My goal for Tampa is to see the people who live here become less dependent on medications and quick fixes to cope with struggles in their lives. I would like to see Tampa be a place where people have the resources to have a healthy mind and body. What advice would you give to other women? My advice is to not let anything or anyone stop you from reaching your dreams. Set long term goals, but also motivate yourself by achieving little goals you set in order to reach that dream. What is your proudest moment? My proudest moment has been seeing how amazing my children are. What is your biggest achievement? Giving birth to my children is a given, but another big achievement has been being able to give my clients hope when they felt they had nothing to live for. What do you love and hate about being a mom? I love when my kids give me kisses. I love waking up to them jumping on me in bed. I love hearing them laugh. I love the look of admiration and unconditional love they have for me. I love how complete they make me feel. I absolutely hate when they’re sick and wanting to take their pain away and not be able to. I also hate the occasional time outs, when two minutes feels like two hours. How do you balance motherhood and work? Thank God for nannies. I make sure we do family activities on the weekend and I’m always home to make dinner and put them in bed. I also try to spend as much time with them in the morning before I have to go see clients. Because I’m a working mom, I spend many hours at work but the time I spend with my children is quality time. What’s your favorite thing about living and working in Tampa? My favorite thing about living in Tampa is that there are a lot of family activities to do with my children. Also, a rich cultural heritage can be found in most of the people I meet.

What’s something you would like to do before you die? I would like to travel more with my family and go to Europe. I would also like to write and publish a book. What’s favorite thing to do with your kids in Tampa Bay? I love taking my kids to Lowry Park Zoo, the Aquarium and just enjoy being outdoors with them. What’s your favorite restaurant for the family? My kids love Red Elephant on Dale Mabry. They have a blast in the video game area. I also like taking them to First Watch because they are very kid friendly. Who’s your biggest inspiration or role model? I would have to say that my biggest role model has been my mother, Dr. Neraida Smith. She was able to have a successful career and also raise a happy family. What makes you happy? What makes me the happiest is spending time with my husband and two babies. How do you relax and take time for you? I take time for myself by going to the gym. My husband will sometimes take the kids to run errands and this allows me to catch up on my favorite book or just relax in the backyard. What is something people don’t know about you? A lot of people don’t know that I’m a classicallytrained pianist and that I love to cook. What message would you like to give to other women community? Always be true to yourself and there’s nothing in this world you cannot do. What would you like to see in Tampa’s future? A healthier way of living and many resources to help people achieve this goal. What else would you like to share with our readers? You can learn more about me and my business at www.lifefocusgroup.net.

Puppies Give At-Risk Youth New Outlook Kids and Canines recently announced its need for additional volunteer puppy raisers to support the organization’s assistance dog program offered at the Dorothy Thomas School, 3215 Nundy Road in Carrollwood. The program pairs at-risk students with dogs to train them so they can be placed with people who are disabled or autistic. As a result of the innovative program, several of the at-risk students who work so closely with the dogs have shown substantial improvements in attendance, behavior and grades. Students selected work with their dogs on a daily basis for Kids and Canines pairs at-risk students with dogs such as 18-24 months to prepare them Kenny, a 26-month-old Labrador Retriever and recent graduate to perform 60 skills required of of the assistance dog training program. a certified assistance dog. While participating students train the dogs at school during the day, these dogs need homes when they’re not being trained, and they are raised and cared for by special volunteers who house the dogs in the evenings and on weekends. Each year, the school requires a minimum of six new puppy raisers, as well as puppy sitters who watch the dogs when puppy raisers travel or must tend to other obligations. “Puppy raisers can be any age, and they can have kids of their own and pets of their own,” explains Jennifer Wise, program director of Kids and Canines. “The real requirements are dedication to the dogs, the ability to drop the dogs off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon and the ability to attend puppy-raiser meetings.” One such dog that successfully completed the program recently is Kenny, a 26-month-old Labrador Retriever. Kenny can open doors, turn lights on and off, remove laundry from a dryer, help with grocery shopping and follow about 60 commands. “Without the volunteer puppy raisers, we can’t offer this program to at-risk kids or provide assistance dogs to those who need them,” Wise says. To learn more about becoming a puppy raiser or sitter, contact Kids and Canines at www.kidsandcanines. org or 813-558-5406.

Zoo’s Youth Program Receives National Recognition Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has been awarded a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in support of the zoo’s youth leadership program known as ECCO (Education, Conservation and Community Opportunities). The ECCO Leadership Program was selected to receive a Museums for America award in the category of engaging communities from more than 500 applicants. Over two years, the ECCO program has served more than 125 at-risk teens ages 13-16. After completion of more than 110 volunteer service hours, ECCO graduates may continue volunteering and working with the zoo. “It means a great deal that a youth program serving our community merits federal support,” said Craig Pugh, executive director and CEO of Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Museums for America awards are the institute’s largest grant program for museums, providing more than $19 million in grants. Visit www.lowryparkzoo.com to learn more.

Patel Conservatory, Tampa Prep Partner The Patel Conservatory and Tampa Preparatory School join to offer more performing arts opportunities to the Tampa Bay community. “The Patel Conservatory at Tampa Preparatory will continue the tradition of providing Patel Conservatory students with the highest quality facilities, curriculum, faculty, administrative standards and security that they have known and come to expect since we opened five years ago,” said Wendy Leigh, vice president of education at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. For the new program, Patel Conservatory instructors will teach dance to Tampa Prep students as part of their curriculum. Tampa Prep students also can participate in Patel Conservatory outreach experiences, including workshops and master classes. On weekdays and Saturdays, dance classes are available to the public in genres such as jazz, hip-hop, modern, tap, ballet and contemporary dance. “This partnership represents an incredible opportunity for Tampa Prep and the Patel Conservatory to pool resources, develop programming and experiences and bring adult and student talent together in a manner unseen in Tampa,” said Kevin Plummer, head of Tampa Prep. “Tampa Prep and the Straz Center’s partnership is a natural fit that will enhance the dance, drama and music experiences for both institutions.” For information about class offerings available through the new Patel Conservatory at Tampa Preparatory program, call (813) 222-1001 or go online at www.patelconservatory.org.

Volunteers and Students Clean Up Hillsborough More than 4,400 volunteers recently picked up litter and debris at 40 sites designated as cleanup areas by Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful for its 25th annual International Coastal Cleanup.

Mintz Elementary Coastal Cleanup volunteers had fun finding litter in Brandon.

This year’s event covered 133 miles of shoreline, rivers and lakes and resulted in the collection of about 62,000 pounds of trash and 2,125 pounds of recyclables.

Some of the more unusual items found included a ceiling fan, Asian sword cover, toilet, Christmas tree, port-o-let, high chair, tiki torch and truck bed liner. Volunteers also found blue crabs entangled in nets at Apollo Beach as well as horseshoe crabs entangled in plastic and fishing line at Ben T. Davis Beach. “Fortunately, we saw a decrease in the number of animals found entangled in debris this year,” said KHCB Executive Director Christine Commerce. “Unfortunately, thousands of animals lose their lives every year because of people’s carelessness.” High school and middle school students, Boy and Girl Scout troops, businesses and families were among the volunteers at the cleanup. “We had a tremendous outpouring of support from the community this year,” Commerce said. “With an additional 1,300 volunteers we collected less trash, which shows we are making a difference in reducing the amount of trash that plagues our environment.” Visit www.khcbonline.org for more information on Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful.

Arts in Motion Brings Annie to the Pasco Stage Arts in Motion, a nonprofit community youth theater in Dade City, is bringing the Broadway classic Annie to the Eleanor Dempsey Performing Arts Center at Bishop McLaughlin High, 13651 Hays Road in Hudson. The show runs Nov. 26-28 with 60 children from grades K-12 taking part in the production. “We expect this will be Arts in Motion’s best production ever and our talented students are going to wow the audience with their show,” says Arts in Motion president, Michelle Twitmyer. Tickets, available at www.artsinmotionpasco.org, are $15 for adults and $7 for students. Arts in Motion produces three shows per year along with summer camps. The group offers a variety of theater education and performance opportunities, including acting, singing, dancing, stage lighting, sound, directing, set construction, costume and stage management. “We believe a welcoming atmosphere creates a learning environment which fosters teamwork and creativity,” Twitmyer says. “When you walk into a rehearsal, you can feel the excitement in the air and can’t help but enjoy yourself.” To learn more, call 352-834-1246.

Time Capsule to Reveal Mementos The Alzheimer’s Family Organization invites Pasco residents to join them for the official opening and update of a time capsule originally buried 20 years ago. The unveiling is 3-5 p.m. Nov. 19 at the West Pasco County Government Center, 8731 Citizen Drive in New Port Richey. The time capsule was originally proposed as a symbolic challenge to the medical community to find an Alzheimer’s cure. “Alzheimer’s disease was first discovered in 1906 with little progress in research, both medically and socially until 1970, with only a handful of researchers trying to discover what this terrible disease was all about. There were no drugs to try to combat the disease and very few options for the caregivers and patients,” says Dominick De Petrillo, executive director for Alzheimer’s Family Organization. “We wanted to make this point and challenged the research community to find out what caused Alzheimer’s disease and what could be done to either slow its progress of find a cure.” The group constructed the capsule of PVC pipe and buried it in the Pasco County Government Center courtyard in Nov. 1990. By 2000, the landscape had been overhauled and it took much searching and staff inquiries to unearth the capsule for its first update. At that time, items were added and the original container replaced with a larger pipe to accommodate larger mementos. For this year’s opening, the Alzheimer’s Family Organization is reaching out to Pasco families and caregivers of dementia patients to donate letters, photos and other items. A larger replacement capsule will be buried in January with the next capsule opening scheduled for 2020. “We are always hopeful that the near future will hold an answer for what causes this disease and what steps can be taken, both environmentally or medically to cure and prevent it,” De Petrillo says. “We would like to eliminate the stigma associated with the disease and help others realize that anyone can become a patient.” To RSVP, call 727-848-8888. Visit www.alzheimersfamily.org to learn more about the group.

Night-night. Sleep right! Sleeping with your baby is dangerous ALWAYS use a crib. Some parents believe sleeping with their baby will protect their child from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Nothing can be further from the truth!
