“We never thought of going anywhere else.”

Renton started developing neck pain and came to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, where Dr. Hardeo Panchoosingh diagnosed him with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), a rare disorder in which excess immune system cells build up and form tumors in the body.

For a physician referral:

Renton stayed at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for five days. His parents were touched by the expert and personal care they received. “We are confident we got the best care for our child.”

N

ow, more than ever, parents and educators realize the importance of raising their children to be aware of other cultures and languages. More than 35 years ago, when bilingualism was not a priority, i took a journey that would change my life forever.

very strange to me. Leaving for three months seemed foreboding. But i had a feeling it was going to be an experience that would change my life forever. ¡Qué correcto! it not only became one of the top three experiences ever in my life, but it helped shape my future career path as an entrepreneur and bilingual children’s recording artist.

By today’s standards, it’s the worst way to learn a second language, but there i was in Largo Junior High’s language lab, headsets on, listening to a voice saying, “Repeat after me … ¿Dónde está el baño?” (Where is the bathroom?)

All of the American Field Service exchange students met up in New york for our orientation that summer of 1976. We enjoyed some “team building experiences” and caught our respective planes to our destination countries. Back in 1976, my flight took almost 24 hours, and as a person who loves flying, that was so cool!

i always had a knack for languages and by the time i got to Largo High, i earned one of the two vacancies for an exchange program with the American Field Service. At 17, i left my family, new puppy and favorite mutt Feliz, and headed to La Cruz, Chile for a summer exchange program. Paired with the Caroca familia, i would spend my summer attending school. Leaving home for more than two weeks seemed

My host family met me at the foot of the airplane stairwell, and their two daughters, Ximena and Lily, became my constant companions and best friends for the next 90 days. The host family is encouraged to speak only in their native language, Spanish, so i recall my textbook Spanish kicking in, struggling with conversations for about 7-10 days, and then gaining fluency hour by hour.

it was amazing to experience! Going from all English to allowing the Spanish language to weave into my daily routine and my dreams was something i never really thought about taking place. By the time i left Chile, not only could i read, write, and speak fluently I was dreaming in Spanish every night. ¡Qué extraño! During my teen years, i kept a journal. Thankfully, i did not break that tradition during my AFS exchange summer. There are written stories of skiing in the Andes Mountains and almost falling over the edge of the cliff where the Beginners’ School was roped off only because i was certain that since i water skied back home that i would surely be top notch at this snow skiing stuff. i promptly traded in my ski poles for a bathing suit and pool chair, where i watched my “sisters” ski by on the advanced slopes. One evening we were at the discoteca (a dance club for youth), and i was dancing with Christian, a boy i had met after school in the park. interestingly enough, we were attending an all girls’ school, and the only opportunity to meet boys was after school in el parque. Christian and i had met during my second week in La Cruz and had taken a liking to one another (though my host father insisted on meeting him before i went out somewhere socially with him). The floor of the club began to shake. The next thing i know Ximena was grabbing my arm and telling me to hurry up and get out. That night was my first experience with an earthquake. No one was injured, and it was a very mild one, but it was enough to scare this American girl from going back to the discoteca the rest of my time in Chile! One of the most positive things that happened to me during my three month exchange program was my personal transformation. i had left the United States weighing more than i should have thanks to fast food, frozen dinners, and overall poor eating habits. My host family in Chile was a farming family, and i learned to love vegetables, fruits, and lean meats as none of my U.S. staples were even available to purchase in our small town. i looked better, felt better, and upon my homecoming, many of my friends and a couple of family members barely recognized me! ¡Gracias, Caroca family ! What i love about Chile is that it’s a very long country whose topography is so varied. i had the opportunity to experience magnificent brown sand beaches with the most beautiful rocks in Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, then enjoy the winter sports and life at Portillo Ski Resort at the foot of the Andes Mountains, and end up in Santiago, the capital of Chile, with my host family for wonderful dining in the city. (The AFS places students with families considered middle to upper class so that

As a mother, i enjoy watching all three of my children take a gander at real independence. it’s rewarding when you witness a special child in your sphere of influence dip their toe in, then their foot, and the next thing you know they are taking the leap of independence! Experiencing an exchange opportunity such as i did – before even entering college – provides children with such a heightened level of self-confidence, autonomy and responsibility. Think about it! you leave the security of your home, the circle of friends you have nurtured for years, the familiar sights, smells and sounds of your community and fly thousands of miles to then immerse yourself in a new country that offers you new people to live with, a new routine, and often times very different sights, smells and sounds. Talk about a life lesson (or 10). A very important, long-term positive that i gained from my exchange experience is that i have retained Spanish as my second language 35-plus years later, thanks to living in a community that embraces diversity and where i am provided a daily opportunity to practice my second language. Whether it’s conversing with my next door neighbor from Ecuador, exchanging pleasantries with the cashier at a neighborhood store or ordering my lunch in Spanish at one of my favorite authentic restaurants right here in Tampa, i am so fortunate to be able to switch between English and Spanish with barely a blink of an eye. Never in my 17-year-old mentality did i think as i walked the halls of my host sisters’ school or the streets of La Cruz, that i would one day transfer many of the language and life skills i was learning into a career, but that is exactly what i did. Children’s recording artist, bilingual educator and keynote speaker Beth Butler is the founder of the Boca Beth Program, which introduces Spanish to young children. W

e welcome the holiday season, eager to share Thanksgiving, Christmas and New year’s Eve with family making fond memories. However, preparing for these special days can add stressors as we try to balance our day-to-day lives and already busy schedules with the demands of the holiday season. The hustle and bustle – the “not enough time” syndrome – can impact our health and well-being. We feel pressured and tense. At that point, our fight or flight hormone kicks in to try to help us. That hormone is cortisol, and over time, the continuous release of this hormone creates insulin resistance, and the resulting progressive increase in our weight. it also can cause an imbalance in other hormones such as melatonin, thyroid and testosterone, which starts a cascade of symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, low libido and difficulty losing weight. How can we make the shift to create a more satisfying life experience and calm our nerves? in my opinion, it comes back to a basic appreciation of the trilogy of body, mind and spirit and developing a conscious awareness of how each action in our daily lives is reflecting an expression to one or all of these. As we separate the parts of the trilogy, we begin by taking a look at our body. Our body needs food for energy. We learn to eat to nurture and strengthen our body and recognize that food cannot make up for inadequacies or dysfunctions in our mind or spirit. As we stress, we reach for comfort foods, which are usually refined carbohydrates and are not necessarily comforting to our body. We need to replace those with more complex carbohydrates, colorful vegetables and healthy proteins like eggs, fish, poultry and beef. it is best to eat organically whenever possible and

limit canned or bottled juices and diet drinks. Drinking plenty of water is important. Our thoughts create an energy field, a direct chemical reaction that alters our perception and encourages actions to create desirable outcomes. Since our thoughts do create action, we must learn to own our thoughts and consciously direct them so that our outcome is the one we wanted. Within our families, we talk together about each person’s desires and dreams and we redirect each other’s fears as opportunities. We learn the value of visualizing health, prosperity and love. Our spirit is where we find our true joy as we come to accept ourselves. We leave behind doubt and replace it with hope. We learn not to judge and to forgive and have compassion for those who judge us. With our families, we express hope. Around a family meal, we slow our pace and attempt to really listen to each other to better understand and fully appreciate each other’s points of view, and we give our love and support. We are nurturing much more than our bodies during that time. We are truly nurturing our spirit. So as we look forward to the exciting times ahead and the opportunities to create new memories with our loved ones, take deep breaths and smile as you take time to prioritize. Make time to have family meals. As we give thanks and become consciously present in the appreciation of the moment, we fuel our body, mind and spirit. Suddenly, it will make the impossible not only possible but joyful and fun! Cesar A. Lara, MD, is a board certified family physician and a leading expert in the field of bariatric medicine, the treatment of obesity and weight loss management. arenting, as any mom or dad knows, is full of questions. And for many parents, when a child announces that he or she has decided to stop eating meat, the concerns — from now what do i make for dinner to how do i know he’s getting the right nutrients to is she rejecting the way i eat — can feel overwhelming.

or lose weight — teens who were or had ever been vegetarians were more likely to engage in extreme unhealthy weight-control behaviors, according to a study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. A vegetarian diet can be unhealthy just as an omnivorous one can, and many a young veg head has survived on a diet primarily of peanut butter cups, french fries and pizza.

Here are the six most important queries you should ask your child if he or she has decided to become a vegetarian.

Asking about your child’s motivation also gives you the opportunity to learn more about your son or daughter and the person they are growing into. Perhaps she saw images of factory farms on the news and wants to protest inhumane conditions. Maybe he heard a quote that inspired the change. inquiring why will help you engage your child in a valuable and important conversation.

Why are you giving up meat? it’s a simple enough question, but many parents get so caught up in what to feed their child that they forget to ask about the motivation behind such a huge decision. Getting your child to share their reasoning gives you the opportunity to clear up any misconceptions your child may have about a vegetarian diet. Some kids may see going veg as an easy way to get healthy

What type of vegetarian? These days, people use the term “vegetarian” to mean any number of things: No meat, no dairy, some fish, even a little chicken to some who decide to use the label. Before your child sets forth on his or her path to veg, make sure you understand what his or her intentions are. A vegan (someone who eats no animal products whatsoever — meat, dairy, eggs and even honey) has very different nutritional needs

than a lacto-ovo vegetarian (who eats no meat, but does eat eggs and dairy. Make sure you and your child are speaking the same language when it comes to his or her desired goals.

What can we add to your diet? Subtracting meat is only one component of going veg in the healthiest way possible. Nutrition addition—in other words, taking special care to include items that contain nutrients like protein and iron—is also crucial. Ask your child to think about what proteinrich foods he or she can eat in place of meat. Foods like beans, tofu, nuts, seeds, yogurt, eggs and even protein-containing grains like quinoa are all good options. if your child plans to go vegan, you’ll also want to make sure they’re adding in good sources of zinc, vitamin B12 and calcium.

Then ask yourself:

What are my fears? Many parents react harshly when a child announces they would like to give up meat. Perhaps, i don’t think so is your knee jerk reaction. But have you considered why? Maybe you’re concerned that your child couldn’t possibly be getting the right nutrients. Perhaps you’re fearful that having a family full of different preferences will turn you into a shortorder cook at dinner time. Maybe you once knew a vegetarian who you really didn’t like. Whatever the reason, take some time to explore your feelings and address them as appropriate rather than letting it become a source of tension between you and your child. if your concern is nutrition, it may be a good opportunity to talk to a registered dietitian or to pick up a book on the topic. if you’re worried about not knowing what to cook to please everyone, ask for your kids to brainstorm meals they will all be willing to eat. Once you’ve identified the concern, you’ll be better able to reach a solution.

How can I support my child?

For many kids who experiment with vegetarianism, it’s the beginning of a life-long way of eating. For others, it’s a temporary phase. Regardless of what it is for your child, the way

health & wellness ...................................................................................................................................................... you handle your child’s exploration can have a huge impact on your relationship. Parent vs. child battles over food are often about control and independence. if you want to be the kind of parent who respects your child’s opinions and preferences, think about ways that you can prove that to him or her. This doesn’t mean becoming your child’s personal chef—helping him or her learn to fend for his or herself is equally important. you can bring your daughter to the grocery store so she can pick out veggie burgers she’d like to eat when it’s barbecue night. if your child has trouble finding veg-friendly lunches at school, offer to send him with meat-free brown bag lunches. Vegetarianism may not stick for your child, but your sympathetic gestures will be something he or she remembers for a long time.

What foods can I make the whole family? But really, you’re thinking—what am i going to make for dinner? There are loads of resources for delicious vegetarian meals, thanks in part to the Meatless Monday movement (it’s exactly what it sounds like—a movement to get people eating vegetarian one day a week). Google Meatless Monday and you’ll find loads of blogs, articles, Pinterest boards and more devoted to vegetarian meals your whole family will love. if the meat-eating members of your family aren’t going to be happy without some beef or chicken on their plate, think about protein pop-ins — meals that can easily be customized to the various members of your family’s needs. if your crew likes chicken tacos, prepare peppers and onions separate from the meat so your veg head can pop in a side of black beans instead. Spaghetti and meatballs night? Before you mix it all up, set aside some pasta for your vegetarian and add in a couple of meatless meatballs you’ve pulled from the freezer and heated in the microwave. Voilà — dinner is served. Rachel Meltzer Warren, MS, RDN is a New York-based nutrition writer, educator, and counselor, and author of The Smart Girl’s Guide to Going Vegetarian.

FINDINg your Work-lIFe balaNce

T

ime flies, and I was always told when you have kids it goes even faster! i realize that now with a 6 year old at home.

My little Samantha is in the first grade and i am just mesmerized watching her. And i don’t want to miss a minute. it can all seem so overwhelming, managing a career and family. So, especially, during the holiday season, i like to be prepared. The greatest blessing during the holidays is not the dinners, parties and gifts. it is family and witnessing the joy of a little one. But there is so much to do and such little time! i begin by getting in the right mindset. i know that may sound silly but it really helps put everything in perspective for me. i live by this motto: the holidays should be filled with joy not stress. Don’t sweat the small stuff. So i begin with baby steps — early! For me that means throughout the year, if i see little gifts my family and friends would like, i buy them, wrap them and put them away in a box way up high in a closet. it’s amazing when i take it down how much is already done, which frees up more time for just enjoying the holidays. i also really try to do the bulk of my gift buying in November because that buys time in December to share and create memories and traditions with my family, especially Samantha. i read once that many women put it all on

themselves to prepare for the holidays, which can feel like a burden. When everyone is included it feels like teamwork. i incorporate teamwork in all our holiday activities, including the gift buying. Whether it is at the store or online, Samantha helps me pick out presents for others. it’s not only great bonding time, it helps her learn the joy of giving and how much fun it is to get things for others that make them happy. i also make it very special mother-daughter time. Until two years ago, my schedule seemed ideal. i have two days off during the week and my husband Dave is home on the weekends. But when Samantha started kindergarten, i realized we don’t have a day off together during the school year. This has been very hard on us both, and i need her to know every minute she is my greatest blessing. i feel that even more during the holidays because all around us we are reminded of what to be grateful for. That is another lesson Dave and i pass on to Samantha. Before all the fun activities at our house, we begin by going through Samantha’s closet and playroom for items we can donate. Dave and i like to do this with her and remind her that there are many children in need. We think it is very important that she is involved in the entire process so she feels apart of it. We sort everything and personally deliver the items to an organization we choose together. The organization has been different every year, and we educate Samantha about them. We really just offer her guidance on choosing the organization. it doesn’t stop there. We also participate in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, which

provides needy children with gifts for the holidays. We go as a family and let Samantha choose several angels. We then go shopping to pick out the gifts. We make a night of it. i either make a nice dinner or we go out. We then talk about why this is important to do. it helps Samantha understand the true meaning of the holidays. it’s just one of our many family traditions. The key for our family is doing all this together. And i love including Samantha in all the planning, from start to finish. She helps me write the lists, go shopping and even cooks and bakes. it makes her so happy that she is involved and it really helps me knowing she is by my side. We are bonding and getting things done at the same time. i practice the same philosophy when we decorate our house. it is a family activity. i enjoy watching Samantha embrace how special the holidays are. We get dressed up to go to the park, where there is Christmas decorations and she sings in our church’s choir. Sometimes you just can’t get everything done. For me, just stopping and taking a minute to enjoy what is around me puts it all back in perspective. Extraordinary woman

by aNgela arDolINo

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.

Kelley Parris, executive director of the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, has spent much of her adult life working to prevent child abuse and neglect and domestic violence, helping individuals diagnosed with a mental illness and the incarcerated and working with at-risk youth. Helping others and developing systems of care that meet the tailored needs and culture of the consumer base is her passion. There is no discounting what you can learn in the most unique settings. While working with individuals diagnosed with a mental illness, Parris was amazed at what she learned on a daily basis. “The honesty in which an individual with developmental delays can simplify an obvious problem or issue that we all too often struggle with never ceases to amaze me. We on the other hand search for ways to be politically correct or maintain a professional demeanor and it always makes me reflect, smile and laugh aloud at our educated ineptness.” Her son is a doctor in Alabama and has recently expanded his family. Liv-Maxine, (named after Parris’ mother) was born in October. “i am amazed at the role he immediately and effortlessly assumed as a father. He makes me so proud. Being from a divorced family is so stressful on children and it is all the more gratifying to know he has embraced this partnership with co-equal responsibilities, sacrifice and commitment.”

for our children is now defined as family. We are a child’s first teacher and they are our first real students. They see how we handle love, negotiate differences, treat others and, most of all, treat each other. The greatest advice my mother gave me was, “Watch how a person treats those individuals providing a service to them; that is the way they will ultimately treat you.” Therefore, i always watch how the waitress, waiter, bellman, are treated. it is very telling if you really want to know the worth of a person.

What is your biggest fear? That i will die last.

What advice would you give to other women? Make your children strong, follow your faith and have faith in yourself. Always take up for your children because you cannot count on anyone else to do the job! Make sure you are honest (as appropriate) with your children. Do not confess your sins to your children! Know you are the first teacher and they will love you forever.

What is your proudest moment?

Every milestone my child has crossed has been my proudest moment. Graduation from high school, college, medical school, husband, father — it keeps going. i adore him.

What is your biggest achievement?

What else would you like to share with our readers? On a voluntary basis, i have been working with women in prison who are survivors of severe domestic violence. These women never give up on being a mother and they never stop loving their children. All children are born innocent, and we are the ones that should shape their lives. We are the teachers. We are the primary influence on a child’s most basic characteristics — honesty, integrity, the skills necessary to be productive, contributing citizens in our world and, most of all, to be good and nurturing parents.

Unfortunately, there are many children who are not afforded responsible parents so there are programs in place that the Children’s Board funds that provide services and support to those children and families. We know the first and formative years shape a child’s world forever. We know that adverse exposure to violence, drugs and unhealthy neighborhoods contributes to the overall health and well-being of our children. One of the major reasons for my relocation to Hillsborough County and The Children’s Board was the tremendous support from the community and child advocates. We are making a difference everyday in the lives of Hillsborough’s children and families and building healthy communities together.

My son.

My child saved my life when he was 5 years old. Children are our future and our salvation. Save one, that’s my motto.

i grew up with a father that believed a girl should be just as good at everything as her male counterparts so i was expected to hunt, fish and target shoot with the best of them. My father would always tell me, “your skills need to be equal or better in order to survive in a man’s world.” it was that sense of you can do anything! My dad cooked and my mother was nontraditional, but there was communication.

Children, my faith, my friends, animals, the elderly, art, nature, the vast abyss of west Texas…

How do you enjoy or draw information from the magazine?

Fast forward to today, where family is defined much differently. Whereas two parents with extended family and cousins operating as best friends, was once the model for the optimum family. Today, family may be defined as a single mom/dad with a support system of friends that are very close and committed to providing that nurturing environment every child needs. Whatever works to provide a safe, healthy, nurturing, educational environment

What kind of message would you like to give women in the area or in this community?

What do you think is the secret to your What makes you happy? family’s success?

How do you relax and take time for yourself?

i transport rescue animals (dogs, cats, pigs). it is pretty neat to volunteer with a doggie underground to reach a foster home, forever home or no-kill shelter. i also paint, but i am not very good.

you can make a difference. Find your niche to change your world, not the universe, but your world. The child next door may need support. The shelter down the street may need someone to sort donations. you may not have time but you have money to donate. Everyone has a role to play in making their world a better place.

it is informative and supportive for the parents in the Tampa Bay area. if i had children right now (considering a recent move to the area) Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine would be the go to place for information to entertain, learn, and provide safe environments for my children.

Who is your biggest inspiration or role model? My grandmother Sara. She was a graduate of Montevallo University (college at that time) and had the most direct, loving, down to earth, honest and humbling advice and love anyone could ask to receive. My father was an inspiration. My mother was a grand mystery. My father represented hard work, my mother grand aspirations.

Putting the FUN-damentals into Classical Ballet For mom and longtime dance enthusiast Maria Capitano Pardo, it was important for her young daughter to take away something valuable from her early dance experiences. “i did my research, and Miss Bobbie at The Ballet School was like a breath of fresh air,” says Pardo, who in 2011 signed up then 4-year-old Stella to work with the certified classical ballet instructor. “Miss Bobbie doesn’t teach only those who want to pursue dance professionally but teaches from the perspective as if you were going to be in a professional company. She has high expectations but can relate to the kids, the perfect balance of keeping them disciplined about dance but still excited and having fun. it’s a well-rounded learning experience.” A dancer since age 3, Bobbie Anne Pontius, lovingly known as Miss Bobbie to students and parents alike, understands parents’ enthusiasm for exposing their children to the art and discipline of dance, reflecting on how her own mother wasn’t allowed to dance due to religious restrictions and encouraged young Bobbie Anne to try as many different styles of performing arts as possible. A native of Lake Wales, Pontius has spent much of her adult life teaching others about dance. She launched The Ballet School 16 years ago in South Tampa. Classes are broken up by age categories and Miss Bobbie uses her specialized training to teach children life lessons through ballet. She insists that this approach takes into account the maturity of the participant as well as their safety as a dancer. “When working with younger children, you approach from a fun angle but not so much fun that they don’t work. Dance is a good discipline and the children have to be able to learn to think for themselves. i teach them rules and techniques to adhere to that will make their performance look strong in the end but take into consideration the dancer’s bone strength and amount of cartilage in their joints at their stage of development,” she says. “Sometimes activities might look like play but every lesson leads to something else higher and more complex.” Miss Bobbie says that unlike most dance studios, there also is an opportunity for young students to reinforce their skills and demonstrate lessons learned as students at The Ballet School meet up with international examiners. Examiners evaluate them and issue certificates to those who successfully demonstrate the skills for their dance level. BMX Is a Family Affair in Largo Not many people get to live out their childhood dream, but Kirk Morrison of J & R BMX Superstore did. Growing up riding and racing on the BMX circuit with brothers Scott and Bert, Kirk found himself a national BMX champion at 13. Once dad Dan gave BMX a try at 40, it quickly became a sport that bonded the whole family. Why all this fascination with BMX? “BMX is a sport that can be recreational or competitive, something you can do at your own pace and take as far as you want,” Kirk says. That love for BMX eventually inspired Dan Morrison to consider a business decision: should the family purchase a small bike shop in Pinellas Park? At only 15, Kirk’s passion for BMX compelled him to persuade his father to make the investment. Once done, Kirk who was still in high school at the time, set out to make J & R Bicycles a huge success. He worked every day in the shop, afternoons and weekends, to sell BMX and even created a side business of selling bike parts at local races, which developed into a large part of the store it is today. Twenty three years later, Kirk’s most beloved sport continues to dominate his attention, and the store has grown into the only BMX-specific store in the state with over 1,200 bikes in stock and everything a rider could need within its 10,000 square foot warehouse. The Largo business, now known as J & R BMX Superstore, is still a family affair. Kirk is owner now, having bought the family business in 2010. Bert, his youngest brother, handles the website and advertising. Their father Dan still works part time, keeping up the warehouse. Mom Peggy is full-time driver of the J&R vending rig that travels to races nationwide. Kirk’s middle brother Scott still races BMX nationally. The company frequently organizes new rider clinics and open house days in conjunction with bay area tracks to stay deeply embedded in the community and provide opportunities to explore a sport that may not be accessible to all. “The sport is one that not too many kids get to experience and that is something we can help change,” Kirk says. “BMX riding and racing is something every kid would love to try and we want to let them know it is here and not out of reach. There are great tracks in the area to ride at and it is not just for the big kids. you will see 4-year-olds and 40-year-olds out enjoying the same track.” Visit the shop online at www.jrbicycles.com to learn more.
