As it turned out, the easiest way to Caleb’s heart was through his leg.
Caleb Hancock was born with 10 fingers, 10 toes, and four heart defects, the result of a congenital heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. Caleb had open-heart surgery when he was just 2 years old. And sometime down the road, he was going to need a second open heart surgery, which his parents hoped he wouldn’t have to go through again.
approved medical device called the Sapien transcatheter pulmonary valve.
That time came 11 years later. But there was an alternative to open-heart surgery. Doctors at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital could now replace a pulmonary valve by utilizing a newly
The result is that Caleb, like all teenagers, can spend his time worrying about things more important. Like homework and baseball.
After inserting a catheter into a vein in Caleb’s upper leg, doctors guided a new valve up to his heart. And because they were able to deliver an adult-size valve, he may not need another procedure like this for a long time.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR ROLE WITH USF AND WHY YOU ARE SO PROUD OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
USF realized that a more strategic focus on supplier diversity was needed, and I was brought on board to build a robust supplier diversity program for the university in mid-2017. Since that time, we have built an amazing program and have spent well over $100+ million with diverse owned suppliers. I am so proud to be connected with an organization who acknowledged their inefficiencies, responded and is now supporting the economic growth and development of our diverse businesses across Tampa Bay. We now have one of the best supplier diversity programs in higher education across the nation, and I am so proud to lead these efforts for such a prestigious organization.
YOU ARE A BUSINESS OWNER AS WELL. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO LAUNCH THIS COMPANY AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? I’m so excited about Cardinal Consulting Group, LLC! CCG is a boutique firm of professionals that have been working in the field of supplier diversity and equity and inclusion program training and development the past 15+ years. Our target market is building supplier diversity and D&I programs for public and private higher education institutions and corporate and private nonprofit organizations. This work is at the core of who I am personally, and as an advocate for diversity and inclusion, I was inspired to launch the company. I believe it is vitally important to have a healthy understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion, and it has been proven by various studies that organizations who have a strategic focus in these areas significantly increase their ROI. The thing that I absolutely love about CCG is this company is positioned to assist organizations to create “real” opportunities, and when there are “real” opportunities really great things happen! For more information about Cardinal Consulting Group, LLC., visit www. LOVECARDINAL.com.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN TAMPA BAY? I absolutely love going fishing! I know that’s probably a surprise, but I used to go fishing with my daddy as a girl and it brings back so many amazing memories! I also love taking walks along the water at sunset. You can catch me visiting the pier in St. Pete, the beach or walking along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa. I absolutely love the water. I find peace and tranquility there; it is definitely my happy place.

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU INSTILL IN YOUR OWN CHILDREN AND WHAT IS YOUR HOPE FOR THEIR FUTURE? The number one quality I instill in my children is to walk in integrity wherever they go and in whatever they do. I also want them to know that they are fearfully and wonderfully made and to be confident in themselves and in who they were uniquely created to be. I never want them to conform because they are inf luenced by someone else’s opinion or perception of them. I want them to understand and love who they are, inside and out, and to celebrate their heritage, their culture and to also be proud of who they are as an individual. My hope for their future is they would prosper and be fulfilled in all they do and impact people in a positive way wherever their path leads them to go. There will be challenges, but stay in faith and know that a good man or woman’s steps are ordered by the Lord!
COVER STORY
Fatherhood & Football A Conversation with Will Gholston of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by Maggie Rodriguez, photography by Kyle Zedaker/Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defensive Lineman Will Gholston became a father and an NFL player at the same time. Eight years and three kids later, he’s mastered both roles. The pro football player and pro dad shared the secrets to his success when we connected with him and his fiancée, Gabby Balkman, via Zoom, just days after the start of the much-anticipated 2020 season. MAGGIE: How did it feel to be able to put on a Bucs uniform again and get the season going after the stress and uncertainty that COVID -19 created this summer? WILL: I was just actually grateful to be able to play…With all the stuff that’s going on, to be able to have an outlet like football, which I actually use as my outlet, it was cool. It was dope. I feel very lucky that they let the season go on. MAGGIE: Your rookie year with the NFL was also your rookie year of fatherhood. What was it like to take on two huge roles at the same time at the age of 21? WILL: When I first got into the NFL, I was down in Florida by myself. I didn’t have [my son] William with me, so it wasn’t as hard a transition into the league. It was just really me focusing on football. Then… we started bringing him down [from Michigan]. Gabby brought him down. She’s the glue. I can’t even take any credit. She’s the glue. She holds it down, without a doubt. Without her, it might fall to shambles. MAGGIE: Now you have three sons [William Jr. (8), Sebastian (3) and Victor (1)] and you’re going on your third contract with the Bucs. Do you feel like you’re a pro at both jobs by now? WILL: I think, with the time at both, I’ve definitely gotten better. There’s a lot of lessons I had to learn. There are a lot of things and new tricks that I learn every day. And with the assistance of Gabby and the family and everyone else around, it’s like a community, a village type of thing. That’s how I believe you should raise a child. It takes a village to raise a child, especially three of them! But I think I’ve gotten better every day.
12
TampaBayParenting.com OCTOBER 2020
MAGGIE: What do you think, Gabby? Is he a pro dad? GABBY: Yeah, he’s a pro! The boys love daddy so much. We have an alarm system when our doors open and my youngest one, every time a door opens, he’s like ‘daddy?’ It could be anybody and he thinks it’s him walking through the door. They see his car pull up and that’s it, that’s a wrap, no more mommy time— it’s daddy. So he’s definitely a pro. MAGGIE: What’s important to you in parenting? WILL: The most important thing is to understand that a child is still a child and not to overburden them with your expectations. You still gotta let them grow, and that’s something I had to learn. That’s the most important thing—to still allow them to grow and guide them without putting such a burden on them to say, ‘Oh, you have to be great’. You just need to be a kid and be happy. We’ll guide you to be great. GABBY: Just let the kids be kids. They’re not adults. They don’t need to know our struggles or worry going on every day in life. Just let them be kids. MAGGIE: How do you juggle fatherhood and football? WILL: I think about them all the time whenever I’m in the locker room. Anybody you talk to knows I talk about the kids and the family all the time. But as far as juggling, I know work is work… but when I get home… we play, we laugh. I try to give each one of them their own individual time, and then we get some group time. I make sure I’m at home to tuck them in and kiss them goodnight. MAGGIE: Are they a big motivator for you in life, in football, in everything? WILL: Definitely. We all bear the same last name that’s on the back of my jersey, and I feel like to be able to leave the right legacy for them—not just being an athlete and making it in the NFL, but leaving the legacy of knowing and understanding—ok, dad was this type of man, this is what he believed in, he tried to be a man of his word— that’s the type of legacy I’m trying to leave behind with them so they’ll have an understanding when they get older. MAGGIE: Fast forward to February. Do you see your sons cheering you on as you play for their hometown team in their home stadium in the Super Bowl? WILL: I’ve been thinking about that since I’ve known that the Super Bowl was here. I’ll put every ounce of energy I have to make myself good enough to contribute for us to be able to do that… And if—not if, when—when we do it and we win, it’ll be amazing! MIKEY (Maggie’s 10 -year-old son): When you scrimmage with the offense in practice, do you guys sack Tom Brady or take it easy on him? WILL: It’s an unspoken rule. You never hit your quarterback. You only hit the opposing team’s quarterback. If I had a free shot on him, I wouldn’t touch him. I’d run right past him and just let the play go on. You never hit your own quarterback. MAGGIE: Finish these sentences: I will feel I have succeeded at parenting if my kids… WILL: … if my kids are happy, healthy and productive members of society. MAGGIE: I will feel I have succeeded at football if… WILL: … if by the time I’m done, Tampa Bay is on top.

and how kids experience it, alongside parents, leaves marks. Brown is a prime example: “My mom, German, couldn’t vote. She always reminded me how lucky I am to vote.” Brown’s military dad taught respect for all commanders in chief. “Their approaches were critical to my experiences then and the ones I cultivate for my children now,” she says. Politics serves as a metaphor for handling life. “Can we make space for opinions we don’t hold? Can we question our own beliefs?” Brown’s commitment to teaching respect over party and candidate affiliation is testament to the power of parents’ words and actions. “It’s sad reading negative commentary by keyboard warriors. I point out how hard candidates work to raise money and the effort being a public servant commands.” Key for Brown is that the kids grow up grounded in their family’s core beliefs and values while maintaining space for understanding that candidates run because they want to make an impact.
Brown advises, “Don’t talk politics with littler ears.” Rather, she models being an educated voter and unpacks kids’ observations with Brown Family - Melanie, Rob, Libby (5) and Andrew (4) analogies they can grasp. “Before COVID, I took Libby with me by Tara Payor, Ph.D. Determined to promote R-E-S-P-Ewhen I voted. Nurturing Early Experiences with Voting and Civic Engagement by Cheryl Wolfe, all photos provided by the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library
My first grade teacher, Mrs. Elzeer, was fond of asking her students, “Where’s the fire?” when we rushed through our schoolwork. We were in a hurry to learn to read, learn to draw and learn to write. We were eager to leave the classroom for specials—art, music, library and computers and gym—and especially for some of us, to go outside for recess after lunch. Mrs. Elzeer taught us to slow down and think while completing our work. This was an important skill that we needed in order to make an informed decision that November and cast our ballot for the United States president. One of the most vivid memories from first grade was voting for the next U.S. president in the classroom mock presidential election. Prior to voting, we learned about elections and the candidates through worksheets and activities. We colored posters of elephants and donkeys, the symbols of the Republican party and the Democratic party, respectively. Everyone was able to participate. We learned every vote counts and were ready to make our informed decisions. Finally, it was Election Day. Adding to the excitement, our student mock election was held on that year’s United States Presidential Election Day. When it was time, one by one we went up to vote and drop our ballots into the classroom ballot box. Then we proudly paraded around the school, raising our elephant and donkey posters up high, while the parent volunteers tallied the votes.
as a way to introduce voting. In addition, the public library offers additional resources to support the introduction of election concepts such as ballot, polling place and democracy. This year the public library offers the community additional materials through the Life, Liberty + Libraries program. The Life, Liberty + Libraries grant has boosted the public library’s collections of children’s books in English and Spanish that can inspire children to learn more about democracy and civic engagement. Check out the public library’s expanded collection of democracy and civics books for children in English and Spanish at HCPLC.org/LifeLibertyLibraries.
Early experiences with voting can be memorable for children who may have years to wait until reaching the voting age of 18. This fall, the public library can introduce little ones to civic engagement and the values of democracy and increase their knowledge and skills towards making a lifelong difference in the civic life of one’s community. Learn more at HCPLC.org/LifeLibertyLibraries.
HERE ARE A FEW CHILDREN’S DEMOCRACY AND CIVICS BOOKS AVAILABLE FROM THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AT HCPLC.ORG:
To make reading a family affair, there are also titles for young adults and adults. These books and eBooks are available to the community and can help spearhead civic discourse and community connectedness for all residents of Hillsborough County, including our youngest citizens.

For 52 years, Corbett Prep has taught generations of children in a uniquely childcentered culture and community. At the heart of the Corbett Prep experience is the positive, supportive relationship between students and teachers. Teachers use research-based strategies to engage students in hands-on learning opportunities. In this extraordinary learning environment, a socialemotional curriculum provides the framework for student mindfulness and wellbeing with robust opportunities to discover and develop individual areas of giftedness – academic, musical, performance, STEAM, leadership, athletic or global. Through a diverse, multicultural
student body as well as partnerships with schools around the world, Corbett Prep students grow in intercultural appreciation and understanding. Corbett Prep parents enjoy strong, often lifelong, connections with teachers, staff and other families. The Parent-Faculty Association and the Dads’ Club provide opportunities for involvement and social activities open to the school community. Graduates often say that at Corbett Prep, they learned and practiced the life skills they needed for success beyond 8th grade: the choreography of working respectfully and productively with those from different backgrounds and cultures, a growth mindset to approach and solve problems, and the confidence, poise, and presence to serve as leaders in their community. Great Option During Uncertain Times by Stephanie Wood, photos provided by Admiral Farragut Academy
When COVID-19 became a global pandemic, dining room tables became desks and laptops became classrooms as families worldwide adapted to a virtual school setting. With the possibility of another surge in the virus and more stay-at-home orders, private day and boarding schools offer a unique option for families. For Tampa Bay families, that’s Admiral Farragut Academy, the leading boarding school on Florida’s West coast. Farragut boarders can live on campus during the week or all school year. Five-day boarders go home on the weekends. Seven-day boarders live full time on campus. (Meanwhile, Farragut also has traditional day students.) Families appreciate Farragut’s precautions and its perks. Because Farragut has full-time medical and boarding staff, boarding students are tested for COVID-19 upon arrival, and regularly monitored. The school also has medical isolation dorm rooms available when needed. In the event of another stay-at-home order, parents of boarding students don’t have to sacrifice their children’s socialization for home-bound confinement. Boarding students can safely remain on campus with their friends. Their learning will continue — a hybrid approach of virtual teaching from our faculty and in-person help from our full-time Residential Life Instructors. Meanwhile, Farragut’s 40-acre campus offers boarders an in-ground pool, access to the waterfront (including sail boats, kayaks and paddle boards), use of modern athletic facilities, outdoor spaces under a canopy of shade trees and an indoor hangout lounge just for them. In addition (and during all times, not just stay-at-home orders) Farragut has a number of safety measures in place such as: germicidal U V lighting in the central air system; sanitization stations; requirement of face masks and social distancing; upper school block scheduling; outdoor classes during cooler weather; daily symptom and temperature checks; and pre-packaged meals in single-use food containers. As a community, Farragut is excited that our campus is open and continuing to provide an all-inclusive experi-

ence to families seeking in-person schooling during this “new normal.” Besides being Tampa Bay’s only boarding school, Farragut offers an aviation program, a full scuba curriculum, handson marine science, advanced engineering, AP courses, the prestigious AP Capstone program (which compares to IB), visual arts and music classes and military-inspired leadership training. Our Admissions Team offers virtual meetings and tours as well as individualized on-campus tours and student shadows. Besides the boarding option, Farragut has a PreK7 day school and the option for day school in grades 8-12. With Farragut you can’t go wrong. The school won the Tampa Bay Times People’s Choice Best of the Best in 2019 and 2020 for Best Private School for Preschool, Best Private School for Grade/Middle School and Best Private School for High School. Navigating the Private School Tour: The 2020 Version
The pandemic has changed our world in so many ways, but one thing that has stayed the same is the need to ensure our children have access to a good education. For some families, that choice is a private education. School policies regarding tours and interviews vary, so we turned to two Tampa Bay experts for pointers to help guide you in your search: Karen Vaughan of Corbett Preparatory School of IDS in Tampa and Rachel Martin Barrett of Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg.
KAREN VAUGHAN OF CORBETT PREPARATORY SCHOOL OF IDS RACHEL MARTIN BARRETT OF SHORECREST PREPARATORY SCHOOL 1|
If the school offers any type of virtual tour, be sure to take a look before you arrive so that you can get a feel for the school and prepare questions ahead of time. Your questions may be answered during your in-person tour, but they may not.
2|
Arrive for your on-campus tour with a mask and be prepared to attest to your health (that you are not showing any signs of COVID). Arrive five minutes early to complete this paperwork.
3|
For the on-campus tour, you may not be able to enter classrooms. Be sure to look inside and observe how the students are learning. Is the classroom calm? Are the students attentive? Are the students smiling under their masks? You can tell a lot about a school by how the teachers and students are interacting and their demeanor in the classroom. During this time, pay extra attention to these details, especially as facial expressions are not as noticeable with masks on.
4|
Since Shorecrest’s curriculum is primarily project-based learning, notice how the students are interacting with one another. How big are the groups? How close are students sitting? Ask about the guidelines that are being followed to prevent COVID spread. Does the school have a plan for closing if that becomes necessary? If the school has a COVID planning document, ask for a link or copy.
5|
Ask to talk with current parents! To connect with current Shorecrest parents, go to https://shorecrestparents.org/#/
BEFORE THE TOUR
1|
Do your homework. Research the school website to find easy answers to general questions surrounding bus service, tuition, lunch, school hours, dress code, athletics, calendar, parent involvement, after-school activities, back-toschool health and safety protocols and procedures, accreditations, affiliations and admissions process.
2|
Check out the school’s Facebook page to get a feel for the school’s approach to teaching and learning, its culture and community. Then make a list of the deeper questions that are important to you to ask and look for on your tour. ON THE TOUR: TOPICS TO CONSIDER
1|
Look around the campus and classrooms and listen in. Are students engaged and happy? Ask how teachers are trained to keep kids engaged. Are the classrooms and campus bright, clean, safe and secure? Are there outside spaces that have room for kids to spread out and move freely?
2|
Ask about class size and how it affects instruction, learning and the teacher-student connection. Is the teacher able to differentiate instruction for students? If so, what does that look like? How will my child feel valued and encouraged for their unique qualities and gifts?
3|
Consider the academic curriculum. Does the school use a traditional singular program of study or does
5|
Evaluate the availability, variety and quality of the enrichment/ specials classes such as art, music, drama, dance, technology, foreign language and PE. Are they a part of all students’ daily schedules? Is there free play/recess time scheduled as a regular part of their day?
6|
Talk with a teacher if you can or be sure to ask the admissions director to share information about teacher certifications, faculty training and expectations for ongoing professional development.
4|
it offer a combination of approaches? Does the curriculum include teaching kids to consider global perspectives? Is there a social-emotional learning component to the curriculum?
Ask about the culture of the community. Does the school embrace diversity as ref lected in its student body, families and faculty, as well as curriculum? Is there a shared schoolwide philosophy as to how teachers speak to and interact with students or is it up to the individual teachers? Finally, notice the energy you feel on your tour and pay attention to that intangible “gut feeling” as to whether you can see the school as a place your child will be happy and successful.

I Can’t Tour a Potential Magnet School... Now What?! by Laura Cross, photos provided by Hillsborough County Public Schools
The highly anticipated magnet school application window opens Nov. 2. Right now, many excited students and families would be booking tours to visit these schools, but because of the pandemic, tours are not allowed this year. But it’s okay: Our district is creating options to make sure you are prepared when that window opens.
LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING… WHAT IS A MAGNET SCHOOL? A magnet school is AWESOME! It is an elementary, middle or high school with a theme-based and technology-rich curriculum. Magnet school teachers are specially trained in innovative and rigorous academic instructional methods.
HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES: ● Shore Elementary Magnet specializes in visual, performing and communication arts. ● Rodgers Middle Magnet has the prestigious Cambridge AICE program. ● Middleton High Magnet has the Academy of Computer Game Design, Computer Systems Engineering, Biomedical/Biotechnology and the Academy of Engineering. They all sound amazing, right? And these are just three of the 38 schools that have unique and innovative programs available. But being the cautious parent you are, you don’t want to sign your student up for a program without a little more information. Things will be a little different this year as we limit visits to campuses and move in-person visits to virtual—but the information to help you make a decision will be the same.
Students from Stewart Middle Magnet's STEM Program
HERE ARE THE STEPS YOU NEED TO TAKE RIGHT NOW, IN ORDER TO BE PREPARED FOR THE MAGNET WINDOW: ● Start looking at each school’s website to get information on the history of the school, details on the program and contact the magnet lead teachers at the school for more information. ● Pinpoint the schools in which you are most interested. Check those websites often. They will begin posting virtual tours, virtual meet and greets, virtual Q & A sessions and locations for viewing informational videos. ● The district magnet website will also feature a list of upcoming virtual magnet events. These are great because you can get a sampling of a bunch of different schools—like a magnet buffet! ● Make sure you know how to apply. The district magnet office will provide information sessions focused on the application process as well as overviews of magnet education in the district. Those will be posted on the magnet website. Now that you’ve done your homework, you are ready for the magnet window to open on Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. The window remains open until Dec. 11. Seats are lottery-based for elementary and middle school magnets and criteria-based for high school magnets.
IN CASE YOU’RE STILL ON THE FENCE ABOUT CHECKING OUT OUR AMAZING MAGNETS – HERE ARE A FEW FAST FACTS: ● 61% of all district National Merit Semifinalists are from magnet schools. ● HCPS Magnet Schools make up roughly 11% of the Nationally Certified Magnet Schools of Excellence. ● Nearly 82% of HCPS Magnet Schools were awarded an Excellence of Distinction National award by Magnet Schools of America.
As always, the Office of Student Planning and Placement is here to help. Call with questions at (813) 272-4692 weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

International Walk to School Day: 5
“steps” to celebrating safe and healthy routes to school, whether you’re learning at school or at home
Article and photos by Emily L. Hay Hinsdale, President, Sidewalk Stompers, Inc.
Oct. 7 is International Walk to School Day! Since 1997, students across the United States have participated in this global event, walking and biking their way to school for a healthy and active start to the day. This year brings unique challenges in staying active during a school day. Your students may be learning at home. They may be learning at school. Wherever they are working their minds, remember how important it is to work their bodies. Increasingly sedentar y lifestyles in America have resulted in this frightening fact: One third of American children are obese. With obesity and asthma listed among the most dangerous underlying conditions for COVID, the need to get kids walking, instead of sitting in cars, is greater than ever.
HOW CAN YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES PARTICIPATE IN WALK TO SCHOOL DAY THIS YEAR? HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS: ● Get out and walk! Yes, it’s that easy. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 60 minutes of physical activity a day for children to build stronger bodies and better mental health. Making exercise part of a daily routine instead of restricting activity to sports practices means children are more likely to continue to include exercise in their lives as they get older. Parents: Daily walks are good for you, too! ● Invite friends to join you. Even socially distanced and masked, being outside with neighbors and classmates can help children feel less alone during an isolating time. Zoom classes and more static classrooms can be lonely experiences. Outside on a walk, children have time to be free and interact with each other more safely. ● Learn about your neighborhood. Do you have sidewalks? Do you have crosswalks? Do you have a safe way to cross a busy street? Plan out your walking and biking routes so you know how to stay safe on a walk. Report danger zones to Sidewalk Stompers! (See below.) ● Read a book about a great walk. Reading can give you ideas about how to make daily walks fun! Try a few of these favorites, but you’ll notice a lot of books talk about children walking to school. “I Walk with Vanessa” by Kerascoët; “Ready, Set, Skip” by Jane O’Connor; “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats; “Look Both Ways” by Jason Reynolds. ● Take a virtual walk with Tampa Mayor Jane Castor! On Oct. 7, Mayor Jane Castor will be showing us her walk to school. She’ll tell us about how she has fun on a walk, about staying healthy and protecting the planet, and share some safe walking and biking tips. Watch out for this great video and take a walk with the Mayor!
Don’t forget to wear your mask and stay socially distanced when walking to school!

Has your child had a Developmental Screening? by the Children's Board of Hillsborough County
For many parents of children birth to age five, it can be overwhelming ensuring they are developmentally on track. You may feel your child is not developing at the same rate as other children. To ease your mind, know that developmental screenings are an effective way to assess a child’s development. They help parents recognize their child’s strengths, know what milestones to look for next, and determine whether a follow-up assessment is needed. Getting your child an early developmental screening is also an essential step towards identif ying delay(s) in children in their early years before they start school.
OTHER REASONS TO HAVE YOUR CHILD SCREENED: istockphoto.com/ TopVectors
● The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 5 children will develop some form of delay or disability prior to kindergarten. ● Early intervention that occurs before kindergarten can have enormous academic, social and economic benefits. ● Developmental screening helps identif y social-emotional problems early on, resulting in children being less likely to be placed in special education programs once in school.

Ahhhh Chooo! Sneezing in a Pandemic
SPONSORED
by Peter Karempelis, MD, photos provided by Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists
Are you the person that sneezes so loud that people jump when they hear it? Have you felt yourself holding a sneeze back in public so others don’t think you have coronavirus? Do not worry. Sneezing is common to all individuals. Some people sneeze loudly and some sneeze softly. Some have one giant sneeze while others have multiple small sneezes. Whatever the style, sneezing occurs when a stimulant triggers a ref lex resulting in inhalation of air and a rapid release of that air through the nose and mouth. Stimulants may include mucous, dust, allergens, particulates, chemicals or infectious particles. Once the irritant has triggered the start of the sneeze ref lex, a signal is sent to the brain, which coordinates slow inspiration of air while closing the vocal cords. The brain then triggers expulsion of the air with a quick opening of the vocal cords and contraction of the chest muscles at the same time. The air is then forced out of the lower airway through the nose and mouth at speeds that can be over 100 miles per hour! This effort is designed to clear the irritant from the nasal lining.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SNEEZING? When the air is expelled out of the nose, so are tens of thousands of particles ranging in size from 0.5-5 micrometers (approximately the diameter of one silk strand from a spider web). This becomes important in spreading infectious disease, as these particles are so small that the human eye is not capable of seeing them. They can land several feet from the person that sneezed.
WHAT DOES SNEEZING HAVE TO DO WITH THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)? While scientists are still learning about how the coronavirus spreads, we do know that one of the primary ways the virus spreads is from person to person, especially those in close contact (less than 6 feet). The respiratory droplets produced by a cough or sneeze can be inhaled by another person or land on different surfaces. If a noninfected person touches that surface and then proceeds to touch his/her nose, mouth or eyes, this could result in infection. Additionally, we know that many adults and children may have the virus but do not show any symptoms. This fact becomes especially important with children who frequently cough, sneeze and touch surfaces before anyone even notices.
HOW DO WE PROTECT OUR CHILDREN AS THEY RETURN TO SCHOOL? Similar to covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze, wearing masks helps limit the spread of particles. The masks prevent spreading in the nearby area and also protect the wearer from inhaling some of the particles that could have been expelled by another person. The CDC recommends that all children 2 years of age and older wear masks while in public places. Watch for any signs and symptoms, including fever, cough or difficulty breathing. Follow your school’s recommendations to help prevent spread. Washing your hands and wiping down surfaces after touching, laundering clothes in the warmest water possible, social distancing (at least 6 feet apart) and ensuring your child is up to date on immunizations and well child visits are all good practices to help limit the spread. Talking to your children about the virus and steps they can take (including covering their nose and mouth when they sneeze!) is another effective way to help keep your children safe.

Discussing Bullying and Cultural Awareness with Kids by Sakina Butt, Psy.D., ABPP-CN, All photos provided by Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital
October marks Bullying Prevention Month and this year, more than ever, it is important families address this issue. It’s particularly important that while discussing bullying, families have age-appropriate, open discussions about racial issues and how it impacts the lives of others, especially black families. Some families may be less comfortable with such discussions, even amidst news coverage related to systemic racism and the Black Lives Matter movement. Here are some ways to encourage and foster healthy discussions.
WHERE DO WE START? • Families can educate themselves first through books, videos, podcasts and websites and by not being afraid to have uncomfortable conversations. • Talk about your family. Speak with your children about who you are, where you come from and the wonderful variety of people in our world. • Highlight how people coming together to give a voice to others’ struggles is a great way to show compassion and kindness.
EXPLAIN THE BENEFITS OF DIVERSITY Children tend to understand abstract concepts like diversity and inclusion better when it is relatable. Talking to children about enjoying different foods, clothing, games and activities is a good way to show them how diversity adds to the excitement and fun in their everyday lives.
TAKE ACTION! • Start talking about concepts related to culture, diversity and inclusion early. • Attempt to be inclusive in all aspects of our life (friends, artwork, reading material and toys/ games), which helps to model and encourage openness in children and prevent racism. • Teach kids how to stand up to teasing and bullying with conversations and role-playing.
50
BREAK IT DOWN BY DEVELOPMENTAL LEVEL Preschool • Consider talking about the variety of animals, then discuss how people also have variety in where they live, what they look like and how they talk to each other. • Talk about appearance, such as hair and skin color, and how sometimes people are mean because of these differences and that makes others feel sad and mad. • Use examples from your child’s favorite television show, movie or book to illustrate this concept (example: in the movie Zootopia when the Scout group is mean to the fox).
School-Age • Start conversations about how people come from different backgrounds and how sometimes people are treated unfairly. Ask your child if they have ever seen another child who was teased or bullied because of the color of their skin or the way they dressed. • Use what your child has learned about in school (example: Martin Luther King or Gandhi), to help guide a discussion.
Adolescents • Discuss the persistence of racial inequity and how this has led to growing frustration and anger, resulting in movements like Black Lives Matter and protests around the globe. • Give examples of how they can prevent bullying or stand up against racism. Encourage them to speak up if someone tells a joke or stand up to classmates if they observe unfair or mean treatment based on the person’s skin color or physical differences.

2020 Halloween: No need to cancel!
by Anu Varma Panchal
After a chaotic spring, a vacationless summer and tense pandemic back-to-school season, we all need something to look forward to and celebrate. What better way than with candy, community and a fun reason to wear masks? “There’s no reason to cancel Halloween festivities this year,” says Michelle Sterling, St. Joseph’s Children’s Wellness and Specialty Specialist. “As long as you follow guidelines, Halloween may look different, but you can make it fun and festive.” If you decide to go trick-or-treating, Sterling recommends you mingle with families or children that you and your children have already spent in-person time with. Remind your child to stop at the edge of driveways and street corners; look left-right-left before they cross streets; wear or carry something reflective; and wear masks and maintain social distancing. If you’re going to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home, forego greeting kids at the door and handing them candy. Instead, pre-bag treats and if possible, arrange them on a table or on your driveway for a contact-free experience. Organizing a common treat area with neighbors on your block or cul-de-sac is another fun way to do this and limit contact. Bonus: bagging and decorating the treat bags can be a fun pre-Halloween activity.
WITH APPROPRIATE PRECAUTIONS IN PLACE, PANDEMIC HALLOWEEN IS DOABLE. STERLING SHARES FIVE TIPS TO MAKE IT ONE FOR THE BOOKS: ★ Wear a mask! Whether your little one channels their inner ninja, werewolf, storm trooper or on-trend plague doctor, you can find a costume that includes face coverings. Make sure it covers their nose and mouth, but eyes should be visible and vision unobstructed. If your little one’s choice does not come with a face-covering, plenty of adorable Halloween face masks are available in stores and online, featuring everything from candy corn and Minions to Star Wars and Harry Potter. (Adults looking to get into the festive spirit will find plenty of options as well!) ★ Create a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt through your home and neighborhood. Write clues and design a route that your kids can follow to get prizes, which can be Halloween-themed trinkets, stickers and treats. It’s a fun way to extend the holiday outside the house and can either replace or act as a lead-up event to trick-or-treating. ★ Trick-or-treat without leaving your home! If you’re not comfortable leaving the house and mingling outdoors, socially-distanced or otherwise, then here’s an idea that will entertain the littles and involve extended family. Take your little one trick-or-treating indoors, with daddy behind the door of one room, grandma behind another and as many doors as you can manage for your kiddo to knock on. You can decorate each door to add to the excitement. ★ Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so for all the party animals out there, organize a Zoom Halloween dance party with family and friends and stay up extra late. Or get a group of friends together and watch a (not so) scary movie “together” on Netflix Party. ★ Get extra creative with décor. For many kids who aren’t going out as much as usual— and especially for e-learners—holidays may be muted by not seeing them echoed in store and classroom displays. Make up for that by going overboard with home décor. If you’ve traditionally resorted to a couple of porch pumpkins and a string of lights, maybe this could be the year to splurge on interior and exterior décor, pictures and color themes. Truly creative or ambitious parents might even try and create a haunted house in one of their rooms. “Hype it up for kids to make it fun,” Sterling says.
Blogger Karimah Henry of craftingafunlife.com shares some fun craft ideas that result in adorable homemade décor.
DIY CEREAL BOX TOMBSTONES Supplies: large recycled cereal box, masking tape, paint brush, craft glue, scissors, grey (2 shades) and black acrylic paint Directions: Cut off the top front and back f laps of your cereal box but leave the side f laps intact. Next, cut a half circle on both sides of the box to form a tombstone. Connect the side f laps so that they meet in the middle, then tape. Complete the tombstone by taping the sides of the cereal box and the curved top. Now paint your tombstone with the grey acrylic paint. Allow it to dry. Use leftover cardboard to cut out the letters R-I-P. Finally, paint black or grey, then glue to the cereal box tombstone.
DIY SPIDER PUMPKIN Supplies: white craft pumpkin, plastic black spiders, black acrylic paint, hot glue gun or craft glue Directions: Apply black acrylic paint to the stem of the craft pumpkin. Next, use the glue to add the plastic spiders to the pumpkin. You can make a pattern or mix them up.
PAPER SPIDER WEB Supplies: black craft paper roll or wrapping paper, scissors and pencil Directions: Cut a large square from the roll of black paper. Next, fold paper in half to make a triangle. Fold the paper in half again to make a smaller triangle. Cut along the top so the triangle looks like a cone. Then cut the top to make a curve for the web. Draw the lines of a spider web then cut. Unfold the paper to reveal your cool web.

How to Decorate the Perfect Pumpkin by Kate White, photos provided by Glazer Children’s Museum
Orange and black decorations are popping up on porches, pumpkin spice is in our lattes and Hocus Pocus is playing on repeat! Halloween is one of my favorite times of year and I’m so glad it’s finally here, even if this year looks a bit different than others. Whether you choose to attend an event like Halloween Spree at the Glazer Children’s Museum or you decide to celebrate at home, there are tons of ways to keep the spooky season alive (or at least undead)! One of my favorite Halloween traditions is pumpkin decorating. At the Glazer Children’s Museum, the staff put on a fiercely competitive pumpkin decorating contest, and you are the judges! Halloween Spree guests vote, a winner is chosen and bragging rights are earned.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS AND TRICKS OUR TEAM HAS PICKED UP OVER THE YEARS FOR DECORATING THE PERFECT HALLOWEEN PUMPKIN!
1|
Use dry-erase markers to lay out your design directly on your pumpkin. It’s not permanent so you can wipe to erase and it won’t leave the indent that pencils often leave.
2|
Cookie cutters can be used as a stencil (grab your dry-erase marker from #1), or to actually carve the shape. For the latter, use a rubber mallet (or a hammer covered in cloth) to hammer the cookie cutter to perforate the pumpkin’s skin, then use your carving tools to finish the task.
3|
Think beyond the pumpkin! What other props can you use to elevate your design? Maybe pipe cleaner spider legs or even balloons for an “Up” theme!
4|
Don’t limit yourself! Who said a Halloween pumpkin has to include only one pumpkin? Sometimes the best pumpkin designs incorporate multiple pumpkins. Several pumpkins can be stacked to make a great Olaf!
5|
Cut that baby in half! You don’t have to stick with a sphere. Expand your shape options by cutting the pumpkin into pieces. For example, two halves of a pumpkin make a great hamburger bun.
6|
Painting lasts longer than carving. In this hot humid Florida weather, carved pumpkins last two days at best. Enjoy your creation longer by leaving the pumpkin intact and decorate it with paint and props instead of carving.
7|
Don’t forget the negative space! Some of my favorite painted pumpkin designs use negative space. Achieve this look by painting only the background of your design and allowing the orange of the pumpkin show through. For example, you could paint your pumpkin black but leave the shapes for the jack-o'-lantern’s eyes and nose and mouth unpainted.
