GASPARILLA MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY Typically held in the spring, Gasparilla Music Festival is making its return this month at Curtis Hixon Park Oct. 1-3. GMF is a local non-profit organization that benefits local youth music programs and arts education. The three-day festival highlights Tampa’s music scene and features national headliners and local emerging acts. Tickets can be purchased at gasparillamusic. com and are $30 for ages 13 and up, and free for children 12 and under. Proof of a negative COVID test or vaccine card will be required for entry.

It’s almost impossible to picture Central Florida without thinking of my former boss, Mickey Mouse. I’ve been a cast member—Disney lingo for “employee”—at two of Disney’s four Orlando-area theme parks. (Yes, it was magical!) But I never had the honor of working at the Magic Kingdom, which opened 50 years ago this month as the centerpiece of Walt Disney’s biggest dream, Walt Disney World, which today welcomes nearly 60 million people a year. And while Disney World is clearly linked to the Orlando area, it also has some surprising connections to our hometown of Tampa Bay!

Here’s a twist. You may want to thank Disney for creating… Busch Gardens! At least the thrill-filled Busch Gardens we know today. When Disney announced its 43-square-mile megaresort, sleepy nature-focused attractions like Weeki Wachee, Sunken Gardens and Busch Gardens filled Florida. “These roadside spots had a choice: Stay quaint, or get big and bold,” explains Rodney Kite-Powell of the Tampa Bay History Center. “Busch Gardens had free beer, animals, and—yes—gardens. But with Mickey moving in nearby, they decided to add thrill rides and roller coasters to snag some of Disney’s audience.” It worked! In fact, that animals-plus-rides formula was so successful, Disney echoed the idea with Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 1998.

When Tampa International Airpor t opened 50 years ago, its gif t shops offered out-oftowners their first glimpse of Mickey Mouse.

DISNEY WORLD’S AIRPORT

To explore Walt Disney World the year it opened in 1971, your best bet would have been to avoid the dinky airport in what was, at the time, the smallish city of Orlando. Instead, you’d book a ticket to America’s newest, most modern destination—Tampa International Airport. TPA also turns 50 this year, and it opened as America’s aviation gateway to Disney World. Gift shops were jammed with Mickey memorabilia, and a very 1970s promotional film from TPA’s archives shows two kids, fresh off one of the airport’s revolutionary driverless shuttles, sprinting up to a picture shouting, “Looky there, it’s Mickey Mouse’s castle!”

ELECTRIFYING LANDMARK

Along I-4, your kids spot it … a 10-story power pole shaped like the world’s most famous mouse. There’s nothing else like it in the world, and it was designed by our very own Tampa Electric. In the 1990s, Disney approached TECO with the idea. TECO engineers had to bend hollow steel tubes (think massive metal drinking straws) into circles—so they called on the folks who bent the metal Olympic rings for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. TECO built a head and ears big enough to cover half a basketball court, creating that magical moment when Tampa Bay families know they’re now in Mickey’s neighborhood.

LAUNCHING SPACESHIP EARTH

When you look up at Spaceship Earth, the huge sphere at the center of Epcot, you’re gazing at a “golf ball” built in Tampa Bay. Underneath the 11,000 shiny silver triangle-shaped panels that make up the sphere’s outer surface, there’s an enormous metal skeleton that was crafted, cut and connected by the Tampa Steel Erecting Company. The hulking steel parts were driven down I-4 from the company’s huge shop near Riverview and assembled piece by piece to create the park’s unmistakable icon.

Old Florida Attractions You Can Still Visit Today story by Laura Byrne, photos from the State Archives of Florida

While there’s no doubt the arrival of Walt Disney World in Central Florida changed the landscape of tourism in Florida, the state’s beaches, natural springs, parks and weather have long attracted tourists here. Before there were theme parks as we know them today, there were roadside attractions that families flocked to, and you can still visit many of these attractions now with your kids! Here are some of our favorite spots:

WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS STATE PARK: WEEKI WACHEE The mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs have entertained families for generations since 1947 when founder Perry Newton opened the park, introducing the choreographed underwater ballet that proved to be an instant hit. Here’s a fun fact—the mermaids didn’t actually get their ‘tails’ until the 1960s. Today, you can still watch the mermaids perform in the underwater theater. weekiwachee.com

HOMOSASSA SPRINGS STATE PARK: HOMOSASSA Not too far from Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is Homosassa Springs State Park. Once known as “Nature’s Own Attraction,” it was home to various exotic animals, including the Ivan Tors Animal Actors. Today, you can visit one of those actors, Lu, a hippopotamus. The park is now owned and operated by the state as part of the Florida State Park system. f loridastateparks.org

SUNKEN GARDENS: ST PETE As one of the last remaining roadside attractions, the 100-year-old Sunken Gardens still inspires and leaves visitors in awe today. It was built in a drained ancient lakebed in 1911 by a plumber, George Turner, Sr. The rich soil allowed the hundreds of tropical plants and f lowers to grow and thrive. It was such a sight to see that Turner began charging a nickel for tours in the 1930s. If you go today, you can still walk the garden paths, see the f lock of f lamingos and even visit Great Explorations Children’s Museum next door. sunkengardens.org

BOK TOWER GARDENS: LAKE WALES Established in 1929, Bok Tower Gardens is a place to seek peace, tranquility and soak in the beauty of the gardens and wildlife. Originally known as Mountain Lake Sanctuary and Singing Tower, founder Edward W. Bok built it as a bird sanctuary near one of the highest points in Florida (295 feet above sea level). You can still enjoy the music from the carillon’s 60 bells today. A modern addition, the Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden, is a must-visit with the kids. It’s not too far from LEGOLAND Florida and worth adding to your itinerary. boktowergardens.org

CYPRESS GARDENS AT LEGOLAND FLORIDA RESORT: WINTER HAVEN Speaking of LEGOLAND Florida, you’ll need a theme park ticket to visit Cypress Gardens, a botanical garden that was opened in 1939 by Dick Pope, Sr. and his wife Julia. It’s a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the theme park. You can still walk some of the same pathways and bridges tourists walked many generations ago, but the park is best known for the water-ski show that was introduced in the 1940s. You can still catch the thrills today in the current LEGO-themed Brickbeard’s Watersport Stunt Show. One of our favorite spots in the garden is the banyan tree, planted from a seedling in 1939! legoland.com/f lorida

SARASOTA JUNGLE GARDENS: SARASOTA Let’s head a little further south to Sarasota where we’ll visit yet another garden—are you noticing a trend here? Botanical gardens were quite the rage back in the day. Sarasota Jungle Gardens was built in the 1930s with thousands of plants and f lowers from around the world. The bird shows were introduced in the 1970s. It is still a family owned and operated attraction today and is home to more than 200 animals. sarasotajunglegardens.com

GATORLAND: ORLANDO Known as the “Alligator Capital of the World,” Gatorland has been attracting families since 1949, when it was built off Highway 17/92, then the state’s second most traveled highway. This was a chance for tourists to get up close to gators and reptiles. Today, the park has vastly expanded with a zip-line adventure over the alligator pit, a petting zoo, restaurants, splash pads, playgrounds and more. gatorland.com

We are heading into the holiday season, that time of year when most of us succumb to the fact that we will probably be eating more sweets than the law should allow. But I’m here to let you know that it doesn’t always have to involve candy or unhealthy foods. This is why I’m sharing some simple, tasty and healthy snacks the whole family can make and enjoy together!

HEALTHY CANDY CORN PARFAIT The kiddos will be knee deep in sugary treats this Halloween. Get ready to trick ‘em with this healthy twist to the popular Halloween staple, candy corn! Layer pineapple chunks and mandarin oranges, then top with whipped cream and a piece (or pieces) of candy corn. Serve immediately and enjoy!

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN SNACK BOARD There are basically no rules when it comes to snack boards, which is why they are such a festive way to feed a crowd, no matter how large or small. Here’s a fun and healthy snack board, perfect to counterbalance all that Halloween candy. You can substitute and add your favorite healthy treats because anything goes!

DIRECTIONS » Start by having the kids pinch a cotton ball in a clothespin and dip it in orange paint. Now paint the paper plate using the cotton ball. Allow it to dry. » Next, cut a stem from green glitter cardstock. Glue it to the back of the paper plate to create the pumpkin. » Finally, cut pieces for the face from black cardstock. You can make circles or triangles for the eyes. The mouth can be any shape that’s easy for your child to cut. Glue the pieces to the paper plate pumpkin to form the face of the jack-o'-lantern.

DIRECTIONS » Start by painting the paper plate green. Allow it to dry. » Use scissors to cut strips of purple paper. This is great cutting practice and helps improve fine motor skills. » Make the hat using black cardstock. Cut a simple triangle, a rectangle for the hat brim and rectangle from gold cardstock for the trim. Use the glue stick to assemble. » Glue the purple strips onto the top and sides of the paper plate to create the hair, and then glue the hat to the top of the hair. » Finally, use the remaining cardstock and black marker to create facial features for the witch. Allow your kids to get creative with the eyes, nose and mouth.

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE BOW TIE » Start by cutting your red felt fabric sheet into 5-by-9-inch strips. You’ll also need a smaller piece of felt that is 2 by 4 inches. » Pinch the larger rectangle in the middle to create nice, neat pleats. » Wrap the smaller strip of felt around the pinched middle area. Cut off any excess fabric. » Use the glue gun to add a small dollop of hot glue to the strip on the back side of the bow to secure it. Let dry for a few minutes. » Finally, attach the Velcro sticky back coin to the back of the bow tie. The other side will be attached to the cape when it’s time to dress up.

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE MAGIC WAND » Start by wrapping your wooden dowel with the black electrical tape. Leave about an inch at the top. » Finally, cut a piece of white tape and wrap the top of the wooden dowel to complete your magic wand.

Dress your child with a white shirt and black pants for this DIY magician costume. You can make it dressy or casual. Use what you have at home or visit your local thrift shop. Wrap the black cape around your child’s neck, then attach the felt bow tie. Complete the look with the plastic top hat and DIY magic wand. Your child is ready to celebrate Halloween.

We’ve all been there: You can’t find a sitter, but still want to get out and explore. One of our favorite areas to plan a family day date is at the St. Pete Pier! Situated along the waters of Tampa Bay, the Pier is ideal for picnicking, biking, relaxing, waterfront dining and so much more.

The St. Pete Pier offers a variety of dining options, from fast casual to semi fancy. Whether you enjoy eating from a hot dog stand or getting dressed up to dine out and catch the beautiful sunset, the Pier has you covered.

If you’re planning to make date night a family outing, the St. Pete Pier is home to an amazing playground. They really had kids in mind when they built the Glazer Family Playground. I like that it has two parts, one for the younger kids and one for the older children. Climbing up and down the designated play areas and using the slides are two of my children’s favorite thing to do at this playground. Be prepared for your kids to put up a fight when it’s time to leave.

DOC FORD’S is a popular date night location amongst the locals. Their Yucatan Shrimp is a fan favorite from the menu, and you just can’t beat the waterfront views from any seat in the house, whether indoors or outdoors. Get there early to grab a seat to catch the sunset. You won’t be disappointed. PIER TEAKI is one of the highlights of visiting the Pier. It’s a rooftop bar with breathtaking views overlooking downtown St. Pete. It’s a must see, so definitely have your camera ready to capture some beautiful moments. The menu includes a selection of bar bites and signature cocktails. This is also a great place to bring out of town guests as the views of St. Pete are top notch! Please keep it mind that after 8pm, it’s 21+ only. TEAK (not to be confused with Pier Teaki) can be found on the 4th level. Come dressed to impress and enjoy an elevated dining experience. The seafood selection is top notch and has rave reviews. It’s also a great place to host a large family gathering or corporate dinner. SPA BEACH BISTRO is the Pier’s outdoor casual dining cafe located near the playground and splash pad. Enjoy pizza, chicken tenders, fries and ice cream. If you enjoy pizza but follow a vegan diet, they have options for you too! I really like that they are easily accessible to a large part of the Pier. Plus, there are a lot of kid-friendly options if you’re bringing the kids along. This is also a good spot to pick up picnic provisions.

The Pier also has a splash pad area and a beach. Yup, there’s a beach at the St. Pete Pier! Bring your swimsuits and towels because getting wet and cooling off after a hot Florida day is a must. You can also launch your own kayaks and paddle boards from this area. Pack a picnic to make it a complete date. And, if you’re wondering can you fish at the Pier, the answer is yes! There are designated fishing spots toward the back of the Pier. If you’re not prepared, Gator Jim’s Bait & Tackle will take care of you with fishing gear for rent and purchase.

Other dining options are FRESCO’S WATERFRONT BISTRO, which is great for outdoor dining and weekend brunch, and DRIFTWOOD CAFE for snacks and ice cream.

LEARN The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is a must-see when at the Pier, especially if you are with the kids. Operated by Keep Tampa Bay Watch, the indoor museum has several interactive exhibits to experience. You can learn about the estuary and even peek at what life is like underneath the red mangroves. One of the more prominent displays is One Second Wave, a sculpture created out of more than 1,500 plastic bottles—the number of bottles thrown away every second in the United States! It’s a reminder that we need to do what we can to reduce our use of single use plastics to keep microplastics out of our oceans. There’s also a touch tank with live sea creatures like sea stars and horseshoe crabs! You can even meet the Discovery Center’s newest residents, ornate diamondback terrapins Bertha and Ruby. Tickets are $3 for kids ages 4-12, active military and Florida teachers, and $5 for anyone else 13 and above. tbwdiscoverycenter.org

ART One of the most unique aspects of the St. Pete Pier is the artwork. Stroll over to the Bending Arc, an impressive aerial sculpture that’s more than 400 feet wide and up to 72 feet tall at its highest point. Fun fact: It’s completely made of lightweight fiber. Other works include a huge colorful mosaic comprised of crocheted mandalas and several sculptures.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Admission to the Pier is free, but parking is not. Metered parking is available in two designated lots for $2–$2.50 per hour for the first four hours. Download the ParkMobile app before you go; this makes it super easy to pay for a spot once you arrive. The St. Pete Pier is bike-friendly and dog-friendly, but make sure your dog is on a leash. Hours are daily from 30 minutes before sunrise to 11 p.m.

SARAH FAULKNER | Milk Velvet Pearls JT: What is your Founder’s Story and how does Milk Velvet Pearls represent you as a woman and mother?

JT: Who is the Milk Velvet Pearls woman? What is the best way to shop your collections and see your pieces in-person?

SF: In 2012, I realized I had emerged from the deepest pain of my life stronger, more hopeful and filled with joy. From total brokenness and by complete surrender, I had experienced a complete and radical transformation explainable only by the power of prayer. I tried and failed (repeatedly) to write a book. Invariably, the recounting of the events would emotionally overwhelm me, and I’d get sick. For years I could hardly talk about what happened without choking-ugly-crying.

SF: Milk Velvet Pearls is for the woman who has survived to live victoriously, and for every woman who has ever felt broken and alone. Because I create custom pieces, invest so much emotion into my work, and value the one-on-one relationships I’ve built with my customers I’m now only selling retail via my website www.milkvelvetpearls.com.

Fortunately, the day my young daughter held my great-grandmother’s pearls, asked all kinds of questions about how they were formed, and declared “Mama, pearls are like people. Bad things make them prettier on the inside,” I had an epiphany. For my life as for the oyster, beauty had been born from the struggle. I opened my shop on Mother’s Day of 2014. Through Milk Velvet Pearls, I learned that many of us are bearing hardships and grief, and I have heard so many stories of victory. I know enough now to say that the hardest times of my life aren’t over (and never will be) and that I can still choose to have joy. My family has walked through opioid addiction and recovery with our son. I’ve suffered (and recovered from) a life-threatening brain aneurysm rupture, a subarachnoid hemorrhage stroke, and the repair of a second aneurysm. God ministered to me. He brought healing. Peace. Strength. Joy. He’s reached me through my children, He showed me that His grace is sufficient and keeps adding layers to this life I call “a pearl”. JT: As a one-woman show— production, photography, IT, marketing, sales, customer service, shipping, accounting and designer— where do you draw your creativity to deliver such unique and special designs? SF: I grew up in rural Vermont in the 70’s and was an only child until I was almost 9. I spent a lot of time in the woods, alone, making imaginary play spaces and little gifts for family and neighbors. I think other designers sketch out their ideas ahead of time. I like to see and hold the pearls and let them speak to me. I find that different shapes and undertones lend themselves to different designs and metal colors. And because pearls are the only gem born of a living creature, one pearl that works for one design often won’t work for another.

JT: What advice would you give to a mother with children that are younger than Jonah (age 24) and Maddy (age 16) that you wish someone would have shared with you along the way? SF: The best advice I can give is the advice I got (but rejected) for so many years: TRUST GOD. As a young mother, I had lofty ideas about what I could control and how things would work out. My mission was to be “the best mother” and to break generational patterns. I was exhausted all the time. Fortunately, I found a better way. Now, as an older, wiser mother having survived some incredibly difficult teenage and young adult years - the best advice I have is to SURRENDER. Motherhood is hard. Kids can break our hearts. The good news though is that God’s way is better than ours. When I learned to trust Him, amazing things happened.

JT: How have you overcome fear and uncertainty, and how has that helped you as a business owner? SF: I devour business books, mindset coaching, podcasts and ideas from other female entrepreneurs. But the practice that has helped me most is journaling every morning. There’s something about the solitude that feeds and strengthens my soul. I focus on things I am grateful for, the dreams I want to come true in my life, and who I am in Christ. The process keeps teaching me that: 1. All great things come from pain. If we think about it, all great art, music, science, relationships have come from someone else’s discomfort. Lean into yours. Use it. 2. Nobody wants fake perfect. People respond to truth and authentic effort. The parts of my story, and the business ideas that I have been most afraid of, have been the ones that people have responded to most. 3. Stress and fear are not from God. He instructs us over and over again in the Bible. Do not be afraid. Be strong and courageous. Be grateful. Be of good cheer. If I am stressed, I’ve learned that it means I’m trying to do things on my own without God. So, I stop. Surrender. And ask for help. It works every time.

Today, along with two of his brothers, Weatherford owns Weatherford Capital, a private investment firm. He’s an active philanthropist in our community, recently hosting a St. Jude’s gala at his home since it could not take place as normal during Super Bowl weekend due to COVID. He’s also one of the founders of onbikes, a nonprofit that raises money to buy bicycles for kids who can’t afford them.

INTEGRATING BOWDEN

Football is in Weatherford’s blood. He is one of nine kids (one deceased), of whom all but one played collegiate sports. “My parents sacrificed plenty getting us to practices and games,” Weatherford recalls.

Weatherford’s greatness earned him another Coach B— Bobby Bowden. Bowden, who passed away in August, permanently impacted Weatherford’s life during his years as FSU’s quarterback. Bowden’s integration of faith, family and football proved more empowering than any field formation.

His father played for Southern Methodist University in Texas. Sports weren’t forced on his kids, but Drew Weatherford begged to play, and during one of dad’s trips, mom gave in. “I was fanatical about football, and he wasn’t going to pull me out,” Weatherford says. The family lived in Lutz, and that’s where legendary Land O’ Lakes High School football coach John Benedetto entered Weatherford’s life. Sure, Coach B saw Drew’s physical ability. But he also noticed Drew’s disposition—and his leadership. “Coach B made me believe my opinion mattered and my ideas were worthwhile,” Weatherford says. He began planning team events like Sunday service. Research shows that nonparental adults, like coaches, positively impact kids’ academics, self-concept and behavioral choices—promoting potential differently than parents. Nonparental adults are also uniquely positioned to nurture autonomy, a consequential trait.

“Coach Bowden taught viewing life as a ministry,” Weatherford says. “He cared more about me as an individual than as an athlete—never talking football off the field.” In Weatherford, Bowden instilled a life approach that seeks outgrowing oneself while always fulfilling priorities, which for Weatherford are faith, family and finance. “Coach Bowden showed me the importance of commitment to process over outcome,” he says. Bowden, who lived what he preached, fostered a confidence in Weatherford that continues enabling boldness. Weatherford’s success on and off the field stem from more than Bowden’s football knowledge, but also the knowledge that Bowden cared about him. Weatherford and his wife, Morgan, are parents to Kennedy (5), Emerson (3) and Truett (17 months). Both support kids’ sports and sampling several early on. “Soon enough,” noted Weatherford, “kids reveal where they want to focus.” His dad didn’t coach the Weatherfords, and Weatherford is unsure whether he will coach his kids’ teams either: “I want them to have the best coach possible for them as individuals, which might not be me. Coaches model greatness and develop athletes’ dedication by pouring themselves into mentorship.” Weatherford believes that nonparental adults are central in showing kids how to work hard, push through adversity and win or lose, try again. Great coaches, like great quarterbacks, help others pour in the extra effort. The lifelong rewards are evident. Parents’ impact on kids is powerful; nonparental adults’ impact on kids, formidable. Kids need both. Kids’ personal development is bolstered by nonparental adults who teach that lessons about the activity are, fundamentally, about life. Kids thrive when they know people care.

Zach Bogosian of the Tampa Bay Lightning talks fatherhood, resiliency and life lessons from rink to home Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Zach Bogosian is back in CHAMPA BAY after playing this past season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Part of the team that brought home the Stanley Cup in 2020, Bogosian and his teammates are ready to go for THREE this season. We recently sat down for a Zoom chat about Bogosian’s return to Tampa Bay and life as the husband of Bianca and father of Mila, 5, Hunter, 3, and Harper, nearly 2.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO COME BACK?

ZB: Winning with a group is super special; you build lifelong bonds. I really enjoy the group of guys on the team, my wife Bianca fell into a nice group with the girls—it’s really been an easy family move for us. And the buzz around town is great. Obviously with the Lightning going back-to-back, the Bucs winning—as a sports fan it’s amazing, but as an athlete playing in a city like Tampa right now, it makes it a lot of fun, a lot of anticipation for the season. It’s a great time to be in Tampa!

HAS FATHERHOOD CHANGED THE WAY YOU PLAY OR APPROACH YOUR LIFE AS A PRO HOCKEY PLAYER?

BOGOSIAN: I remember when I was [a] young player coming in the league and being in the same locker room as a guy who has kids… you look up to them a lot. On paper, you’re not that much older than a lot of guys, but maturity-wise and life lessons—you bring that experience into the rink every day. Luckily in Tampa, we have so many guys who have families, so that was another driving force in deciding to come back here because you do want to have that support system when you’re on the road. A lot of the kids are the same age, and they all play together. You create that family atmosphere within the locker room. It’s awesome.

TELL US WHAT IT’S TAKEN TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. BOGOSIAN: Lionel Messi said, “It took me 20 years to become an overnight sensation.” Everyone that plays a sport—someone somewhere down the line sacrificed, whether it was time, money, or whatnot to have you in that position. I owe a lot to my parents.

I was a smaller kid and there were kids who were bigger, stronger, faster, but I always knew deep down I wanted it more than them, and that’s all you can really ask. At the end of the day, if you have that mental resilience to put forth that effort—because it is a lot of effort, a lot of hard work, a lot of time, a lot of commitment, a lot of sacrifice—in the end it’s so worth it. Having that resilient attitude and being able to bet on yourself and have that self-confidence to stick it out is something I’m really looking forward to passing onto my kids as they get older.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO CELEBRATE THE 2020 STANLEY CUP WIN WITH YOUR BROTHERS AND FAMILY? BOGOSIAN: Just to have the Stanley Cup in my parent’s house—my grandparents lived there and my great-grandfather built the house, so it’s had a few different generations. My great-grandparents came over from Armenia. They started the family in Massena, New York. A lot of time and effort and all that stuff I just talked about kind of came full circle and I was the beneficiary of all that. They paved the way for me, so it was cool to bring that to my parent’s house.

There’s no way possible that I would be sitting here right now in this Lightning facility, no way possible that I could be here without my parents or my brother to push me [and to] be there throughout my entire career and life. I had to travel sometimes an hour-and-half for practice … and they [my parents] had three boys playing hockey, three boys playing lacrosse or three boys playing soccer. So there were a lot of moving parts to all of this, but somehow someway, I just put my head down and kept plowing through and it just goes back to the support system I had.

YOU SEEM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT PLAYING IN FRONT OF THE FANS AGAIN! ARE YOU ALL READY TO GO FOR THREE? BOGOSIAN: That’s the plan. The guys did it last year and a big part of that group is back, so we’re feeling confident going into the year. When you win, especially back-to-back, you are the champions, you are the success measuring stick if you want to call it that. You are going to get every team’s best, but we’re up for the challenge. You already heard me talk about the quality of individuals in the locker room. I’m just super excited to be back with the guys and the team and looking forward to playing in front of the fans. I played so many years against the Lightning and I know how good the fan base is and how loud the rink is!

WHILE THE PLAYERS ARE CHAMPIONS ON THE ICE, IT’S THE SUPPORT SYSTEMS AT HOME TOO THAT HELP MAKE IT POSSIBLE, RIGHT?

BOGOSIAN: Anyone that has kids understands, you think you’re exhausted—and then there’s being a parent exhausted. It’s two different things. My wife is a complete rock star. She understands what our lifestyle is, so she does everything in her power to make it easy on me. She is amazing. An amazing parent to the kids, amazing mom. We have a great relationship, but we joke around because I probably wouldn’t be the easiest guy to be married to. I’m pretty hyper, so it’s basically like she has four kids at home—she’ll scold me and my oldest. Me and her tag team…but it’s great. We have fun at home.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO AS A FAMILY IN TAMPA BAY? BOGOSIAN: When I got down here the first time, I was only here for like two weeks before the pandemic started. We basically stayed down by Amalie. We were staying in a condo 10 f loors up with three kids, at that age—chaos. We’re looking forward to getting the band back together and just seeing the city, walking around. It’s obviously a great place to live. My kids will be super excited to get back into the rink to watch the games. They love going to games, [love] the energy in the rink.

YOU JUST SENT YOUR OLDEST CHILD TO KINDERGARTEN—WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

BOGOSIAN: It’s just crazy how fast time has gone. We sent her to school at 2 and then boom. She’s in kindergarten. We didn’t have a real sentimental moment when we dropped her off. It’s just cute seeing her uniform, backpack and lunchbox.

WERE YOU SURPRISED TO SEE A TEAM FROM FLORIDA WIN BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS?

BOGOSIAN: Five years ago, six years ago, eight years ago, guys like Vinny LeCavalier and Martin St. Louis created that winning culture that was passed on to Stamkos and Headman and the other guys. These guys paved the way for things to line up perfectly like they did the last two years to win.

WITH YOUR WIFE BIANCA BEING A FORMER PROSOCCER PLAYER, DO YOU THINK YOU BOTH WILL ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO PLAY SPORTS AS WELL?

BOGOSIAN: That’s one thing my parents were really good with me. I played a lot of sports, I had a lot of friends, but it wasn’t hockey, hockey, hockey all of the time. I was a kid, riding my bike. I went to the park. I wasn’t playing hockey every single day. I feel the modern athlete now, the parents or the coaches are making these kids choose one sport when they are like 5 or 6 years old which I think is insane—one, because they’re 5 and 6 and two, the beauty of playing more sports! I played hockey, soccer and lacrosse until I was 16. Playing soccer made me a better hockey player. Playing hockey made me a better lacrosse player- and you get a chance to be in different locker rooms. At the end of the day, it teaches you how to walk into a new team which is hard to do, have new friends [and] teammates with a bunch of different personalities, learn how to be a good teammate and be accepting and know when to be hard on guys and when not to be hard. It’s all learning. I just feel like nowadays ... the parents are trying to create a robot or a prodigy. Six-year-olds having a skills coach, video coach, skating coach, hockey 7 days a week … I think at times, [that] creates a person that maybe doesn’t know how to play on a team because they are so solely focused on themselves when it’s really important to be a good teammate, especially in the game of hockey. I just think kids need to have that balance of yeah—I want to be a hockey player, but I also want to be a kid too. I just think it’s super important from a developmental standpoint, socially and athletically, to play a bunch of different things.

WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE TO PARENT DURING A PANDEMIC?

BOGOSIAN: For me, it’s been two different extremes. I was with the kids during the first part of the pandemic every day, and then I left for 80 straight days, and then back and with them every day. I’ve had where I haven’t been able to give them a hug and kiss, wake them up or just spend time with them. It’s been challenging at times as a father, but all in all, it’s been alright. There are a lot of people in worse situations who are working hard every day to get through this.

WE’VE TALKED ABOUT RESILIENCE AND FAILURE BEING A GOOD THING— WHAT LESSON HAS IT TAUGHT YOU? BOGOSIAN: You learn a lot about yourself. As an athlete, your initial reaction after you fail or after you lose [is to] look yourself in the mirror and dissect how you did and go into the team. It’s good to have that self-motivation. To fail, to have that adversity, creates that burning inside you to succeed more.

In 2001, Congress declared October as Family History Month. This annual observance is a time for us to explore our past and preserve our history for future generations. Here are some ideas on how to get your family involved and excited for Family History Month! A good place to start is by having children INTERVIEW GRANDPARENTS, AUNTS, UNCLES AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS. Work with your child to prepare a list of questions and try to avoid those that elicit simple yes or no responses. Think of these questions as conversation starters. There are no right or wrong answers, and if the conversation goes off topic, that’s OK. Be sure to have paper and a pen available to write down responses—or record the responses to make an oral history. Here are a few questions to get you started: ● When and where were you born? ● What were your parents’ names? ● What is your happiest memory of your father? Your mother? ● What is the most important lesson your parents taught you? ● Where did you grow up? What was it like there? ● What did you do for fun as a child? ● How did you like school? ● What jobs have you had? ● What would be your recipe for happiness? CREATING A MEMORY ALBUM is another great way to preserve your family’s legacy. You can include photos, letters, post cards and other memorabilia. Journaling helps personalize each page and creates context for entries. Taking this one step further, you can digitize your photographs and albums allowing you to easily share them with family who live far away. FOOD is another great way to connect with others. So, dust off those old recipe cards that have been passed down for generations and try your hand at creating a dish that one of your family members is known for. During the meal, talk with your children about the dish and why it’s part of your family’s history. If you don’t have a favorite family dish, get together with your family and create one. Talk with your children about why this new dish best encompasses your family. RESEARCHING YOUR FAMILY TREE can be exciting, but also frustrating. Luckily the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library is here to help! The public library’s Genealogy & History webpage, available at HCPLC. org/Genealogy, has a wide variety of online research tools to help you get started including local history resources and user guides. There’s even a free ancestral chart you can download to start recording your family tree. Ancestry Library Edition is a very popular genealogy resource, and it offers access to billions of records in census data, vital records, military records, directories, photos and family trees. Fold3 is another popular public library resource that focuses on military records of those who served and their families. Discovering family roots, sharing traditions or even creating new ones are all ways to celebrate Family History Month together. Mark your calendars! The first magnet and choice window for the 2022-2023 school year is nearly upon us! The window opens Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. and closes Dec. 11 at 11:59 p.m. This is the first opportunity for our families to apply for a school of their choice for the 2022 school year. Remember it is not first come, first served. The family who applies on the last day of the window has as much chance of getting into their choice school as the family who applies on the first day. So this means, do your homework!

Screening Saves Lives by Anu Varma Panchal

Cast your mind over some of the beloved females in your life: your mom, sisters, female cousins, aunts, best friends, bridesmaids and roommates. Now think of this startling statistic: In the United States, about one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. That’s why doctors want women to make sure they get that potentially life-saving cancer screening, despite the COVID-19 Delta variant causing anxiety about going into doctor’s offices again. About 2,650 men are expected to be diagnosed this year with the disease, but according to breastcancer.org, the number one risk factor is simply being a woman. Although age is the next big risk factor with the vast majority of diagnoses occurring in older women, the Centers for Disease Control reports that about 9 percent of new cases are found in women under 45.

POTENTIAL SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER » Nipple tenderness » Lump or thickening in breast or underarm » Dimpling or change in texture of skin on breast to resemble an orange peel » Swelling or shrinkage of breast » Nipple discharge » Pain or discomfort in breast » Inverted nipple Keep in mind that one or more of these does not definitively mean that you have breast cancer. Nor is the opposite true: Breast cancer may not announce itself in any of these ways. The only way to know by sure is by screening. (Source: National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.)

“Unfortunately, the rates of breast cancer have been increasing in the U.S. and globally even before COVID,” says Dr. Jennifer Yeong-Shin Sheng, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “The global increase in breast cancer incidence is seen in all age groups and is highest in women under age 50.” Younger women are at a higher risk if they have close relatives who were diagnosed with the disease when they were under 45 or if they have changes in breast cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA. According to the CDC, you could also be at higher risk if you’ve ever got one of those letters from your physician’s office telling you that you have dense breasts, which could make spotting tumors on a mammogram more difficult.

TIPS FOR BEING PROACTIVE Although there are no sure-fire ways to prevent breast cancer, here are some suggestions that have proven to help with early detection or reduction of risk:

“Breast cancer remains the leading cancer affecting all women, although the prognosis is of course improved with earlier detection,” says Dr. Robert Gabordi, BayCare breast oncology surgeon and medical director of breast program at St. Joseph’s Hospitals. “The incidence rate may be on the rise, which is indicative of improved screening and detection, although the mortality rate has not increased at the same pace, suggesting better clinical management of breast cancer patients.”

» Self-exams: Learn how to do a breast self-examination and report any suspicious results to your doctor. » Investigate your family history of cancer by speaking to relatives. If you do find a pattern of cancer, you can speak to your doctor about genetic testing and counseling. » Maintain a healthy weight and get plenty of physical activity. » Breastfeed. » Make and keep your annual OB-GYN visit and do all the prescribed screenings.

Of course, COVID-19 complicated everything. Medical offices had to stop doing screenings and mammograms, and even when they opened back up, many women were afraid to go in because they didn’t want to be exposed to the virus. Although most oncology centers did their best not to disrupt patients’ plans, many women who had already been diagnosed and were at the beginning of their cancer journey found that surgery and chemotherapy were postponed. For some, this led to the disease advancing in stage by the time they were able to get treated again.

BREAST CANCER BY THE NUMBERS

That’s the bad news. The good news is that if it’s caught early enough, breast cancer does not have to be a death sentence. In fact, we may have so many new diagnoses because more women are getting checked. In women over 50, the overall death rate from breast cancer decreased by 1 percent from 20132018, though it held steady in younger women.

Now that things have opened back up, it’s imperative that women schedule those annual exams and any screenings that their doctor recommends. Hospitals and health systems have put in place measures to protect patients, including temperature checks, screenings and requiring employees to be vaccinated. “For breast cancer, early detection and treatment is key to improved survival and longer-term quality of life,” Dr. Sheng says. Detecting cancer early could mean less invasive treatment with fewer side effects and a lower chance of recurrence. Once the cancer has spread, the scope of treatment can become more intense and invasive, which can itself cause health problems later. “Do not delay mammography,” says Dr. Gabordi. “Breast cancer has an excellent prognosis when interventions occur early. It is important to remember that while mammography does not prevent cancer, it allows for earlier detection and that is the best screening tool we have. Simply put, early detection saves lives.”

This rarely causes significant problems immediately, but the child should be seen in the emergency department for removal as soon as possible. It is often very difficult, if not impossible, for parents to remove foreign bodies from the nose, but emergency centers have multiple creative ways to get objects out of the nose. If left in the nose, an object can damage the nasal septum or eventually be aspirated into the lungs. If it’s in there for a long period, it will often produce a one-sided nasal drainage that is often foul smelling; unlike a cold or allergies where the drainage is typically from both sides. This warrants a trip to the emergency department or an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist for removal.

OBJECTS THAT ARE SWALLOWED

WHAT ABOUT BUTTON BATTERIES OR SMALL MAGNETS?

Button batteries can be found in many small toys, watches and some musical greeting cards. These are easily swallowed and can cause significant problems, especially if lodged in the esophagus. Small powerful magnets are both a choking hazard and can be extremely dangerous when swallowed in multiples. They can “find” each other and break through the walls of the intestine leading to a serious infection and possibly death. In both cases of button batteries or magnets, your child should be seen in the emergency department immediately as damage can begin occurring in just a few hours.

OBJECTS IN THE EARS

This is generally not an emergency, but objects in the ear canal need to come out. Parents should seek medical care from their pediatrician, emergency department or ENT as soon as convenient though.

The urgency of this situation depends on three things: ● What was swallowed ● Where it ended up ● Symptoms the child is having Metallic objects can be detected on X-ray, so a visit to the emergency department can determine the location of the object. If the object is non-metal and your child has no symptoms, you can offer the child some liquids; if that works, then solids. If both are tolerated without any symptoms, parents can watch the child at home.

Remember, always call 911 or seek immediate help if your child is having any difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, and/or has a hoarse voice, is coughing or is unable to eat or drink.
